Why Daschle Will Likely Be Confirmed
President Obama’s pick for HHS Secretary isn’t likely to take himself out of the running based on today’s facts.
Former Sen. Tom Daschle will, however, get a lot of ‘no’ votes from Republicans.
But the Democrats are likely going to hold firm for the following reasons:
1) Daschle revealed the problem himself.
2) Daschle has deep relationships in the Senate from his service as majority leader — he’s earned a lot of respect on Capitol Hill.
3) The Driver Problem — Many members of Congress and senators have drivers or have staff drive them. They don’t want this to really open up as an issue.
But while Daschle is likely to be confirmed, President Obama will pay a political price for this.

This makes me absolutely ill. I thought these guys were supposed to be thoroughly vetted before they were offered positions. I thought Obama didn’t want any surprises. But I guess it doesn’t matter, because he doesn’t seem to care what these people have done… of course, I shouldn’t be surprised since he nominated a known cheat/liar to be Vice President.

If Daschle was anything other than a Democrat he’d be run out of town. But for George S. and other members of the Democrat party it’s just a small mistake. Small change …

This is not the “change” I vote for.

I don’t think President Obama will take the hit for Daschle unless Daschle creates huge problems and mistakes on the job in HHS. Daschle and Bush are the ones who didn’t get along, and now that Bush is out, Daschle should quickly get back into good relations with Congress and the American people. Again, only if Daschle makes irreversible mistakes, then he will be a good at HHS.

Our Greatest Smartest Leader PBO is a brilliant man. A brilliant man is always brilliant in choosing brilliant men to work for him, including brilliantly cheating the government that they are supposedly to govern and the laws that they composed to impose on you who do not work for him.

After the culture of corruption in the Bush administration, most of us aren’t inclined to blink over Daschle’s tax issues. Besides, assignment to a position is based on the past accomplishments of your record, not weaknesses.

C’mon, you have to admit it. Daily scandals are very definitely change. Maybe next time a politician offers vague promises of “change”, voters will ask for a definition. Oops.
I predict that by September, Obama’s job approval ratings will be lower than Bush’s at their lowest point. Bet on it.

I have to admit I am a little Disappointed with Obama for sticking by Daschle But I will say this I will take Obama over Mccain and Bush anytime regardless of the Tax Drama but he should seriously drop the Guy!

PBO ran on a platform of changing Washington. He said that he was going to change the “politics as usual”. Well whats new about about politicians who impose laws on the rest of us that they do not obey. No there is nothing new about this and Mr. Obama is now appointed two men who have not even paid their own income taxes but instead of being prosecuted they will be getting high paying and infulential jobs in the government. “Yes they can not pay their taxes.” Change I think not unless you count changing your principles as change you can beleive in. Like Nixon said when the President it is not illegal. I quess the same can be said for former government officials too!!

George, too bad you don’t ask any tough questions on this matter. The answer is that the White House has you in their pocket.
If this was a republican you would have spent your entire program on this matter. You brushed this off in one minute on your show.
How do you sleep at night?

All of you idiots complaining about tax cheats, are cheaters.
You cheat on your taxes all the time.
Give me any of your taxes to audit and I will find the loopholes you have exploited that you should not have used.
We are lucky the guy was caught and he paid up.
The gov’t loses billions of dollars to tasx cheats every year.
Republicans are the leaders in tax evation. So stop trying to be holier than the Pope OK.

Gg51- Daschle shouldn’t be in the position in the first place. He’s a tax cheat. He should never work in a Federal government position again.

I agree with George’s reasons as to why Tom Daschle will be confirmed. He deserves to be confirmed. One cannot judge a person by a single mistake he or she makes and ignore the good that he or she has done and the the tremendous potential of service.

This is a great example of the immorality of congress. Here’s another good one. Alcee Hastings wants to build Homeland security camps. He just introduced H.R. 645. The broad language of this bill could create another nazi Germany. Read this and post it everywhere! http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=87757
Write your congressman. First they waste our money. Then they confirm law breakers. Now they want to be able to round up anyone who says enough is enough.

and most importantly
4) No one really cares what the opposition says. They are irrelevant. Bunch of politicians with a bad case of amnesia.
This country just suffered the worst case of nepotism in history. If ole Dubya’s last name was Smith, he would have been looked upon as a village idiot before he was elected therefore we would have never had the displeasure of him being our 43rd potus.
Now that POTUS 44 is in office, here comes all the whining itching and moaning about how the country is in grave danger. HELLO!!!! This started with old Dubya concocted the axis of evil crap sandwich. I need not mention the debacle that has become. Also these are the same loonies who have been harping on tax cuts for the wealthy for the past eight year and yet kick and scratch for them to day. Earth to REPUBLICANS. THEY DO NOT WORK. The trickle down economics … what I called the tricked out economics do nothing the working class when cronyism, fraud and greed abounds.
So please shut up and get out of the way.
Would you listen to the party that put the country in this mess. NEITHER WOULD I.

This is absurd – to think for one minute that the US public is stupid enough to believe that a former US Senator would not KNOW about “imputed income” (as though he has been preparing his OWN taxes -VS- a CERTIFIED Public Accountant? Yet expect us to believe “Daschle said tonight he did not realize his car service was income and not a gift from a good friend”. How hypocritical that the nominee for Chairman of HHS doesn’t pay his taxes yet the average American is asked (expected) to pay more taxes for Health & Human Services (doesn’t this also include the almighty cry of “it’s for the children or we can provide more insurance for the children”. If Daschle does not have a better fundamental understanding of finance and money then why would Obama want to have him “reforming” an entity as important and involving as much financial complexity as the Health Care system of the United States?

George S. listed as a reason for the confirmation: Many members of Congress and senators have drivers or have staff drive them. They don’t want this to really open up as an issue.
=======
This is the REAL problem: There are two real classes of people- (1) An Elite class that either is rich enough to have people like drivers for them or who get someone else-like taxpayers- paying for the services, and (2) Those who don’t have that luxury. My anger this last election was not at the ususal Democrat versus Republican hype, but at an elite class that nominated presidential candidates in both major parties from the first type of people. We bash private industry CEO’s for their private jets and rich bonuses, but there is another class of people who just don’t “get it”-The Washingtonian class that drives around in limos on the taxpayer’s dime who just “don’t want to open up the issue”. These people are just as bad, if not worse, than the CEO’s in my opinion. And this election jsut further cemented their control on power in this country. and it is NOT confined to any one party. BOTH Democrats and Republicans have this snobbish attitude when it comes to Washington power that is destroying the public’s confidence in goverment. And every Obama nomination that reveals tax issues, driver issues, or other class related issues is revealing that we really did not get “the change we need”.

“Yes we can” continue with politics as usual. There is no change, regardless of the party in charge. The jails are filled with extremely apologetic people who admit they made a mistake. Unfortunately, as always, we the people are not lucky enough to have friends in congress or the white house.

“Republicans are the leaders in tax evation. So stop trying to be holier than the Pope OK.”
LOL, cute…Rangel, Geithner, now Daschle. I am not sying that Republicans have not had their problemsin this arena, but right NOW you have a new Democractic Pres. who has been yapping for 2 years about creating a new ethical standard. He is the one responsible here for continuing to violate his own rheotic for high standards.
If this is Obama’s concept of high standards, I’d hate to see what he considers average or low!
As far as peole cheating on thier taxes, guess what, if we get caught, we are paying a bigger price than these clowns! We are not trying to be “holier than the pope”, we are judging the candidates and this president by HIS campaign promises and on going rheotic! If you want the criticisms to slow down, tell Obama to fess up and admit to the American people that he really doesn’t care about any ethical standards.
In both Giethner’s and Daschle’s cases (as Well as Charlie Rangel), we are asked to believe that these men of public service, who know tax returns will be scutuinzed by the political opposition are ALL either extremely incompetent or blatant liars! In either case, they are not what Obama Promised the American people!

“3) The Driver Problem — Many members of Congress and senators have drivers or have staff drive them. They don’t want this to really open up as an issue. ”
Hmmmmmmmm…..are you insinuating that there are more issues with reporting of taxes in reagrds to this ?
If so, then why not stick some your crack ABC invesigators on it NOW????
Whether its Democrats or Republicans….Grow a pair and check it out rather than just throw the grenade out there!

Obama keeps putting himself in awkward positons….
From Obama’s Own Web Site – Ethics Page
Close the Revolving Door on Former and Future Employers: No political appointees in an Obama-Biden administration will be permitted to work on regulations or contracts directly and substantially related to their prior employer for two years.
Tom Daschle….
signed on as a Senior Policy Advisor with the K Street law firm Alston & Bird. Health care interests, including CVS Caremark, the National Association for Home Care and Hospice, Abbott Laboratories and HealthSouth, are among the firm’s lobbying clients. The firm was paid $5.8 million between January and September 2008 to represent companies and associations before Congress and the executive branch, with 60 percent of that money coming from the health industry.
Looks Like A CLEAR VIOLATION here!!!!
Oh Yes…”CHANGE”…I’ll just keep breaking my own rules.

That Daschle connection to healthcare is fine by me, considering the direction they both are looking to go. I’m not a believer in what you say today needs to be followed to the letter tomorrow. Circumstances change, the landscape changes, and there are almost always reasonable exceptions.

“”Yes we can” continue with politics as usual.”
You haven’t seen an open dialogue like has been happening on the stimulus bill. It would NEVER have happened under George Bush. If you were paying any attention at all, you would see that the “change” all you Republicans keep saying isn’t happening is happening right in front of you.
“The jails are filled with extremely apologetic people who admit they made a mistake. Unfortunately, as always, we the people are not lucky enough to have friends in congress or the white house.”

I’m sure James Carville will find a way to blame Bush for this, too.
And the media will continue to promote Carville as a “Political Analyst” instead of a “Rolling commercial for Democrats”

“That Daschle connection to healthcare is fine by me, considering the direction they both are looking to go.”
This goes to Obama’s lack of expereince. You dont run around the country for 2 years saying your going to change things, then make a big deal about your so-called ethics rules…ONLY to find out if you want the people you claim you need….YOU HVE TO BREAK YOUR OWN RULES!!!
This speaks directly to Obama’s lack of knowledge of how to put together a government. A point amplified by his “troubled” nominees…Richardson, Holder, Geithner, Daschle & now Nancy Killefer!
Posted by: Mike_C | February 3, 2009, 12:09 pm 12:09 pm
It’s OK with the media that a Democrat breaks his own rules. It’s only Republicans that are held to any ethics standards.
The American public, by and large, will follow right along with whatever the media tells them, so they will be fine with it, too.

——————————
Silky_Johnson ,
Well, let’s see, exactly what experience at forming a government did he have before the election ?
ZERO !!!!!!!
He has been rushing nominees through the vetting process OR he has been ignoring the results of the process.
Either way, his lack of knowing how to do this has resulted in major questions around Richardson, Holder, Geithner, Daschle & Killefer! Three of these now never even get to the confirmation vote.
Obama should have paid more attention to the vetting or at least have had a really good heart-to-heart with each of his nominees about any potential speed bumps. Remember that 63 question profile EVERYONE was supposed to fill out? Either people outright lied to Obama on them, or He ignored what he was told!
Again either way, his inexperience in this process has come through now

How long will you stand for people who break the law? Where are the penalties
that all other Americans pay when they make the same mistakes.
No penalty was paid by either cabinet member.
Others in office still have not came forth and paid up to the IRS.

George really did his homework on this one. Yesterday a slam dunk, today he pulls out, but it is all Tom’s decision. George, own up to your failures, or are you hiding your tax problems also. This president, who ran partly on judgement, doesn’t seem to understand, even when he knows these things in advance, that the public is fed up with corrupt politicians, and is ready to fight back.
