Alarm Over North Korea Missile Prep

ABC News’ Luis Martinez reports: US officials tell ABCNews that North Korea has begun placing a Taepodong 2 missile at a launch facility in preparation for what it says will be the launch of a communications satellite sometime between April 4 and 8th. The launch has drawn concern from the United States and Asian countries because the same technology used to launch a satellite can be used to launch ballistic missiles and would amount to a test of North Korea’s ability to reach the United States with a ballistic missile. One US official says that North Korea appears to have set up two stages of a three stage Taepodong 2 missile at the Musudan Ni launch facility located on the country’s northeast coast.     North Korea announced its intention to launch a communications satellite in February and since then US officials have confirmed activity has taken place at the launch site, though no missile had been spotted until now. One US official said of the recent activity, "Yes, there is something out there and it’s an additional step beyond what we’ve seen before. "    Another US official tells ABC News that the placement of the rocket stages on the launch pad occurred within the last 24 to 48 hours.  Once the stacking of the stages is completed, the next step would be the fueling of the launch vehicle.  This official says there are no indications that the fueling process has begun.  The same official says all indications are that the North Koreans are on schedule for a launch date between April 4th and 8th, the date they identified as their target date. The North Koreans could accelerate the fueling process to speed up a launch date, but this official says so far things "are progressing along" for the publicly stated launch date Top US intelligence official Dennis Blair, the director of national intelligence, told Congress a few weeks ago that he has no reason to doubt the North Koreans’ stated intent of launching a communications satellite.    North Korea launched a Taepodong-2 from the same facility on July 4, 2006, but that missile blew up shortly after launch. The State Department and regional partners have stated that the launch of any missile, even the launch of a satellite, is a violation of a United Nations Security Council resolution that North Korea from engaging in ballistic missile activity.

Asked about the report of new activity at the launch facility Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell told reporters today, "We continue to monitor the situation closely. We are very interested in it, following it very closely. And I think that’s where I want to leave it at this point. "

Admiral Timothy Keating, who heads US Pacific Command, told a congressional panel yesterday that the US military is ready for a North Korean launch. "We are up to task, I believe," the admiral said.  "We are ready to defend U.S. territory, our allies and our national interests if the President so directs."

This is pretty darned serious and the U.S. needs to use our laser plane capabilities to fry the thing before it gets over to our shores. It would send a clear message…

If we shoot it out of the sky, be prepared to witness No. K attack So. K and an all out war in that region. Perhaps that’s what is needed. USAF be on stand by, because you’ll be going on a bombing mission like no other. And that might be alright too.
Pray for your leaders to have wisdom and guidance.

It is easy to start a war than end it! For those who says the US needs to shoot it down, you can be sure that the N.Korea will retaliate against s.korea and Japan! And before we know it, it will be a third world war! So be very very careful for what you wish for!!

I say let the shuttle “accidently” nudge it out of its
orbit, lets say 1500 miles toward earth and let the
earths gravitational force do the rest. Hee hee

Has the US or any other nation offered to launch the satallite for them?

Posted by: Concerned Citizen | March 25, 2009, 8:50 pm 8:50 pm

they are only launching a satellite…north koreas best interest is not to upset the international regime. hence i dont think they will do anything. they can barely feed the country…so…

The N. Koreans just want attention and respect. That’s what most of the far southeastern countries are always fighting for. I say Obama sends them a bouquet from 1800-Flowers and a “Worlds greatest country” coffee mug and I think they will be happy for a few more months. Why can’t everyone just get along? Our World leaders all act like a bunch of kindergarteners on a playground. It’s going to be so embarrassing when the aliens come:)
The whole world knows about our mutual destruction policy, thats the point of it existing. Everyone knows that there is nothing to gain by sending nukes our way. We have over 10,000 of them, enough to serve up brekfast, lunch and dinner to all the other nuclear armed countries. The demise of a single U.S. city would be the demise of an entire nation. These are hollow threats that are not to be taken seriously. They are simply condered up to turn the eyes of the world on a country so desperate to gain notoriety that instead of researching a cure for cancer, they threaten to design a “satelite” to scare our “perfect” way of life.
I say shoot the thing out of the sky as soon as it lifts off the pad. We need to send a clear message that the U.S. still polices the world from tyranical leaders and safeguards the needy and helpless from dictators whom threaten their freedoms.

Let them launch. It probably will fail again. Why risk N. Korea retailating over a missle lanch. The press seems to overreact. The sky is not yet falling. What drove N. Korea to break the agreement anyway? I think there’s more to this story.

Lets face reality. Between North Koreas nuke ballistic missles, Iran’s soon to be nuclear missles, Al Qaida, Irans link to Hezbollah. The word is going to end in the next 5 years. I am not a supporter of N. Korea by any stretch of the imagination, but who exactly are we to tell another country what they can & can’t do? When we have the biggest supply of nukes and are the only country in history to actually drop more than one on innocent civilians. That blows my mind.

People have a tendency to paint a doom & gloom picture. Weve been talking about the end of the world for years. Cold war and before. It hasn’t happened. It won’t either. Cooler heads tend to prevail. The soviets and americans knew what the end game wold be if that happened. Sure Iran wants a nuke. Korea already has them. They could have used them against S. Korea. They didnt. The world seems to come together when the cause is great enough. I don’t buy this end of times jargon. People predicted Iraq to be split by the 3 factions. Even though they had their problems they still coexist. Sure you hear about a bombing almost daily. But when the press focuses on these events and that’s all you hear then that’s the picture that’s painted. Even Bin Laden is becomming irrelevant. He doesn’t have the sway he used to. Calmer heads seem to prevail. The rhetoric isnt as sharp as it used to be. People realize terrorism doesn’t help them achieve their goals. It creates a backlash. These are splinter groups that people realize have only their own agenda. They do not want to be subordinate to them. India Pakistan both have nukes. Fighting over a small chunk of land. They’ve had their skirmishes. Nothing major other than what the press makes it out to be. The diplomats seem to do a very effective job of maintaining the peace. No I believe the world will be here for a long time. I believe when times get tough the right people comes along. It’s happened so many times. Dont sell people short.

We gotta admit shooting it down would feel great and would ensure the world knows of our anti-missile missile capability and therefor not mess with us, but I don’t think that is a good idea. Never let the enemy know all your capabilities. However, if the launch does not follow the expected trajectory immediately we must shoot it down. Oh darn. Seriously, at some point we have to let the little chubby guy with the funny hair know we are serious, and that you don’t mess with the US military unless, of course, you are suicidal.

Every single activity in world makes you worry and that is what your government need to go to WAR and spent the TAX payer’s money so they can make some for themselves. And when you ask where is the TAX that I paid? They will reply by referring you to the war, and when you ask if you make money out if it. They will reply NOT FOR YOU but, you are save. But with what they are doing all around the world how safe the people really are?
Isn’t time for you to have a revolution?

As a person who is currently living in South Korea, I find it interesting that there are so many opinions about how to “take out” the dictator of North Korea by those living in distant countries. I must ask those people, “Why bother?”
If the mainstream media in the U. S. and, South Korea would ignor this dictator and his “saber rattling” concentraiting more on the economic situation (which both countries are suffering greatly from at this point)this little, pot-gut man might finally get the message that he and his country are not important enough to occupy “prime-time” media!
But, as long as everyone continues to allow the media-mites to agitate hearts and minds, then all must continue to be preoccupied with time consuming stupidity!

The North Koreans, as a sovereign nation, has a right to explore the universe like any other nation would. Why are we so afraid of the thought that the North Koreans will develop long range missiles technology. We have it as does many other nations. So are we still the world policeman that dictate who can and cannot have missiles. Why dont we all just disarm and try to save the earth from armageddon.

Hi
Guys
North Korea is a small country that has failed to feed its people, provide dissent shelter for the population, why get scared, give it time.even Iran give it time they will varnish with their loads of Nuks.remember Chonebul in Russia the nuk accident.all these states can’t develop their own technology, that is transfered technoloy.so they dont own it.So USA just shoot down that long missile and we shall be done.Japan you don’t worry just get that animal down. You can’t fight a war when you can’t feed the fighter-North Korea.

Why isn’t China exerting control over this dangerous nation? We’ve heard nothing from the Chinese on this new possible inter-continental missile. China is the only nation who can talk to North Korea and get them to stand down and stop posturing and threatening.

So, when the Japanese shoot down this missile over Japanese airspace, with a U.S. THAAD system, will Obama continue to call missile defense “Unproven?”

Posted by: carl | March 26, 2009, 9:42 am 9:42 am

First of all I find it hard to believe that even the backward thinking power in North Korea would even venture a project with an offensive purpose. It would be suicide on their part. North Korea has openly revealed launch data to ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) and IMO (International Maritime Organization) revealing the coordinates where various stages of the launch vehicle may descend. Various countries in the region as well as the United States possess the capability to track and otherwise destroy the launch vehicle if the trajectory after launch is anything other than previously announced by North Korea. They should be more concerned by Japan who has stated it’s intention to “shoot down” anything that falls toward it’s shores. The projected flight plan indicates an area within 75 miles of Japanese territory and Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada said Japan would “deal with anything that is flying toward us. We are preparing for any kind of emergency.” In that respect, I would think the North Koreans would have more concern with Japan than the U.S. if the satellite launch proves to be anything other than previously announced. The intent to use the launch as a bargaining chip in future talks toward non proliferation I think would prove counter productive. Given the openness North Korea has exhibited regarding the launch, why would anyone think the launch would have purposes other than the announced intention. As far as violating U.N. charters, just where does it state that the United States is to be the sole defender of nations violating existing U.N. charters. The current U.N. charters in question of violation by N. Korea were measures hammered out by the Bush Administration in regard to his announced member countries of his “axis of evil” nation’s. Presently 50 nations have launched satellites and 10 nations have launch capability. I don’t recall the United States posturing against any of the other 9 nations with launch capability in the past, all of which have offensive capability 10 times greater than that of North Korea, including nuclear. I would think all nation’s are well aware of the fact that the United States has the capability to destroy any nation including China or Russia without setting foot upon their shores, even though such a maneuver would bring devastating results. And I would hope that the powers to be would have learned a lesson after the disastrous results wrought upon the world by U.S. saber rattling and nation building policies of the past 8 years. I say let them launch. The consequences are in their hands.

“I say let them launch. The consequences are in their hands.”
We should do everything we can to keep the “consequences” OUT OF THE HANDS of a regime which continues to starve, torture, and murder millions of its own people, threatens annihilation to Seoul and Tokyo, and clearly has the means to do so–with or without nukes.

Posted by: Have Another Round of Liberal Kool-aid | March 26, 2009, 10:36 am 10:36 am

Sorry, I made an unintentional error by stating in my previous post , “just where does it say the U.S. is to be the sole defender of nations”, I meant to use the preposition “against nations” rather than “of nations”.

Posted by: devilkev | March 26, 2009, 10:38 am 10:38 am

Have another round: I couldn’t agree with you more. However, don’t you think that those factions within the powers controlling North Korea aren’t well aware of the consequences that could befall their impoverished nation if such an offensive action were to be executed? Also given the fact that the capabilities of Japan in defense of their own nation backed by powers such as the United States are well documented and have been openly expressed, do you really believe that Kim Jong-II really believes he or his small nation would have anything to gain by such an offensive maneuver. The probability of such an action achieving success is highly unlikely, and in the event that even one missile were to be launched offensively and actually striking the shores of any other nation by North Korea would bring immediate destruction to that small country. The United States has proved beyond any doubt that we can rain total destruction upon a nation in short order, as Bush proved with the destruction of Iraq in the matter of a few days. Hopefully, what we have learned is the fact that we can’t install our form of government or change the ideology of another nations people following the destruction wrought upon them by U.S. offense capabilities. Given these facts, can’t we let the North Korean people decide if they’d rather eat or have missiles?

this is insane everybidy is reaking out!!! its just a little missle we could shoot that down in a heartbeat if we have any sign of it comming towards us! the united states needs to stop worrying about them cause they cant mess with us we need to worry about our own problems at home like the economy and jobs and gas prices!!! we need to unite not fight over this little thing

How can you possibly compare North Koreas military capabilities with Iraq? North Korea has a far superior military and is well prepared for a full scale war. Also, North Korea has most of their facilities underground. How can you hit a target thats not visible? The only thing you can bomb and nuke are civilians.

Posted by: Drew | March 26, 2009, 3:07 pm 3:07 pm

Gee, I guess the Patriot and other anti-missle systems which Bush pushed for don’t look all that bad now, do they President Obama? That’s why Russia, China, Iran, and N Korea didn’t want us to move forward on those programs; It made their missle systems useless. But the regular media – and the Left – didn’t get that part.

This isn’t the United States saying anything or our government being hypocrites, because we’ve dropped the bomb and now we don’t think anyone else should. This is a matter of global security and stability. There is a United Nations sanction on North Korea that is supposed to prevent them from launching any ballistic missiles (to include satellites). If there are no consequences for the actions of these extremist leaders than what is the point of the policies that are set in place by the UN?
With that being said, do I agree with the US being the police force for the world? No. I’m sick and tired of seeing American Men and Women being the first ones into a volatile area. Let’s send in the French or the German military first this time or one of the other 191 (excluding the US) countries that are members of the UN? Our military forces are spread so thin now as it is.
And lets not forget about the training aspect of this too. These military members have been training for desert and urban warfare now for 6 years and we’re going to send them to the jungle? Is it just me or is there a serious concern here? Let’s let someone else take this one. Our boys and girls need a break!

North Korea should be taken very seriously ,for a country such as this to let their people starve and spend their money and resousers on military needs is a worry. There seems to be no regard to human qualities other than them selves,so there for to the rest of the world as long as they get what the want ,similar to a spoilt little boy, which left uncontroled becomes a monster. So they need to be controled even just to save there people from starvation ect. This needs to happen before they have the capability to produce and become a nucular hazard.

Is North Korea on good diplomatic relations with China, Japan, South Korea, and Russia. If these neighboring countries are enemies with this small nation, then a nuclear weapon maybe nessesary. First off North Korea needs to have the support of its own people. Do the Koreans (north) want nuclear capability? Are they willing to have economic, and political concessions placed against them? The Government needs to think about their people first. Respectfully speaking, the United States needs to leave the ballistic missle situation to the Asians. The U.S. seems to be highly concerned about a tiny nation acquiring a nuclear weapon. I believe the U.S. is out of place worrying, and boasting about North Korea having a nuclear weapon. It is China, and Asian neighbors who should be concerned. The Korean government stated that a weapon of such magnatude will be used as a last resort. If North Korea is surrounded by enemies, then a nuclear weapon maybe appropriate assuming the people will make thru life dealing with economic and political sanctions. It is a good idea to have North Koreas government to become military formed, and have one of Jong Ils sons working as a figurehead. Last but not least, in the U.S.A. Today defense secretary Robert Gates said “a missle launch is a mask for the develoment of an intercontinenal ballistic missle”. Well just like putting missle defence in the country of Georgia is like a mask for militarily GETTING CLOSE to Moscow. Every country is trying to look out for its own interests. The U.S. needs to more focused on internal affairs. The economy, illeagal immigration, and bringing the troops home. There are so many other stuff the U.S. should be caring about, not North Koreas ballistic missle.

I think that the United States should forget the political negotiation tactics and just send in stealth bombers to blast every military base in North Korea taking out the vast majority of their air strike capability including this rocket. Let’s see them retaliate then. I think that would send a strong message to any terrorist organization.
Israel should take the same approach with the Hamaz. Just start wiping any terrorist organization off the map.

Show HBO and CNN?Gather intel? They’re outnumbered in terms of size and arms .I don’t think they’re going to launch a missile to attack anyone.

In the end there will be wars and rumors of wars. The love of man will grow cold, men will be lovers of themselves. Mens hearts will fail them for what is to come on the face of the Earth. The sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light. This may not be the end but it sure sounds like what ive been taught since i was a child.
Search your hearts, think about the mortality of your lives. Life is just a vapor one minute were here next minute were gone. Find a Bible and see for yourselves, im not preachy but wow i see it coming and coming soon if not now soon. Will you be ready for it. And are you willing to take the chance of a next life after death. They that call upon the name of the Lord will be saved. If you have Jesus and his forgiveness and ask forgiveness you have nothing to fear. Even when the bombs drop you can have peace knowing full well that when you die you will be with a loving God. Hope that wasnt preachy just seemed applicable for this weird time in our world.Read John in the Bible and to find out other stuff go to Revelation. God Bless
