Coach K’s Feathers Ruffled by Barack-o-Tology Snub?
ABC News’ Karen Travers reports: President Obama has been in politics long enough to know that you can’t please everyone, even when it comes to something as nonpolitical as the NCAA basketball tournament. Obama unveiled his tournament picks during an interview Tuesday with ESPN’s Andy Katz. Nothing too risky — the president likes the favorites for his Final Four, going with three top seeds (Pitt, Louisville and North Caroline) and a two seed (Memphis). Obama has the Tar Heels winning it all in Detroit on April 6. Well that pick may have touched a nerve in Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski, who said today that he thinks the president would be better off spending his time focusing on policy, not hoops. "Somebody said that we’re not in President Obama’s Final Four, and as much as I respect what he’s doing, really, the economy is something that he should focus on, probably more than the brackets,” Coach K said in Greensboro, N.C., site of the Blue Devils’ first-round game against Binghamton. But Coach K did try to brush it off: “Why would I care about that? I love the guy, and I think he’s going to be great.” Is this just bruised feelings carrying over from the bitter rivalry between North Carolina and Duke? Would Coach K have the same reaction if his team went a little further in Barack-O-Tology? Perhaps he’s playing a bit of a head game with North Carolina, trying to keep the spotlight (and pressure) on the Tar Heels by making sure they know they have the weight of the presidential bracket riding on their top-seeded shoulders. Reggie Love, Obama’s personal aide, played basketball at Duke but that wasn’t enough to sway the basketball-savvy president. The president has them losing to Pitt in the Elite Eight. — Karen Travers

Obama Avoids Questions on Contraception Rule
You still writing stories about how Obama is great when the evidence is truly showing he is a mistake that needs to be taken care of soon.

Duke is still a rather undersized team with little inside presence.
Not exactly earth shattering to not pick them for the Final Four.

Love you coach K–Go Duke!!
Obama has plenty of time for the NCAA. He has turned the economy over to Geithner and everything else to Pelosi.
Obama just has to read a speech every now and then, go on talk shows, and sign bills he doesn’t read.

Coach K has a proven record of success in what he does, not like our incompetent president. I’d rather have Coach K running the country any day. In fact, he could do a better job running the country while at the same time winning basketball championships.

Perhaps the President should be working on much more importan matters, such as the economy.

Are all members of the big media required by contract to respond to/comment on every silly story Drudge puts on his Web site in big, ugly fonts? Seriously, First Read had a post on this, now Political Punch. And, of course, Halperin’s all over it. I haven’t checked yet but I’m sure Politico is working on a three-part series about how Coach K thinks Obama is trying to do too much.
This is even more of a distraction than the AIG bonus feigned outrage. Should we now expect Congress to propose some sort of reactionary legislation to ban Obama from filling out an NCAA bracket in the future…or maybe tax whatever winnings he receives at 90%? The GOP is already complaining about Obama actually taking a few minutes out of his day to fill out a bracket. Oh, the horror!
The economy is in the toilet and y’all are wasting your energy on casual comments made by Coach K? Incredible.

I agree…that’s a scary comment. “(T)aken care of”? Yikes.
Of course, the author is probably some pasty, overweight white guy who thinks he’s tough because he shoots deer with a semi-automatic rifle but who would cower in the face of any real physical challenge. Unfortunately, that’s usually the profile of a spree shooter. Cowards are capable of killing.

So are all you anti-obama poster here saying that the President can’t ever have time off to relax a moment and fill out a tournament bracket?
Get real!
He is human just like the millions of other picking our favorite teams. Get over it!

I’m dead serious. Obama needs to stop frolicking on Air Force One playing “campaing trail”, doing late night TV talk shows and start governing for a change. Might I suggest he start with fully reading legislation he signs? I’m sure Coach K reads things in full before signing on the dotted line. That alone makes him more competent than the suit sitting there right now.

“I’m dead serious. Obama needs to stop frolicking on Air Force One playing “campaing trail”, doing late night TV talk shows and start governing for a change.”
It’s called the bully pulpit and it’s been used by president’s for ages. A big part of the presidents job is to be the salesman-in-chief for his policies. You may not like his policies but that’s his role. The bully pulpit allows his to go over Congress and the silly media and speak directly to the people. It’s not like he’s playing fake rancher and cutting down shrubs – he’s reaching out to the American people, the voters, his bosses. That’s part of governing. The guy doesn’t have to be sitting at his desk in the Oval Office every waking moment, especially not in this day and age. Do you think he’s just sitting on AF1 lounging out and listening to his iPod. They have conference rooms and sophisticated communications equipment on that aircraft, you know?
I work for a relatively big financial services company and our chief execs are often on the road meeting with clients, the media, speaking at conferences, participating in roundtables, etc. That’s what chiefs do.
And have you seen how much this guy has done in his short period in office. You probably hate everything he’s accomplished but it’s not like he’s been slacking.
And seriously, does he really need to be on 24/7 watch over this AIG bonus silliness?
Posted by: OGLiberal | March 19, 2009, 1:20 pm 1:20 pm
Maybe coach K should take his own advice and be 100% focusing on winning this thing instead of doing commercials

I don’t have a problem w/ the President filling out brackets, but I do have a problem w/ it posing as major news on many outlets, and ESPN devoting a show to it. A bit much, don’t you think?
On another note, I love how you libs are now saying this AIG bonus thing is a distraction now, after it appears Obama and his team are responsible (along w/ other Dems – Dodd!). Funny, when the news first broke, it was a big deal for you when you thought it was Bush’s fault! You libs are so transparent it kills me!!!
Posted by: Obama, the second coming | March 19, 2009, 1:30 pm 1:30 pm
A “confession”? So everybody who works for the financial services industry, even mid-level schlubs like me, are evil and our opinions don’t matter?
I’m not ashamed of where I work. It’s a freaking job and I have to pay the bills. (which gets tougher everyday) Frankly, I have no love for the giant businessmen of the world, the masters of the universe who created this mess. But just because of where I work (a company that, for the record, hasn’t seen a dime of bailout money – we’re not a bank and we have no debt) doesn’t mean I’m Bernie Madoff.
And what I wrote is a rant? How so? Rants are angry and often silly, like your ridiculous suggestion that Coach K could run the country better than Obama.
You, ma’am, can save it. Just save it.

Om my President BO is so smart, picking the Tar Heels. 98% of the experts on ESPN have picked them to win. AIG, NCAA, anything to divert attention away from his failings.

“Funny, when the news first broke, it was a big deal for you when you thought it was Bush’s fault! You libs are so transparent it kills me!!!”
But it is a distraction. If we’re going to focus on AIG, our energies would be better spent investigating how the billions of dollars we are handing over to AIG are finding their way into the hands of the likes of Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Bank. It’s essentially a backdoor bailout. And if that investigation shows that Obama and Geithner have been asleep at the wheel, so be it. But this populist BS about contractually guaranteed bonuses established over a year ago is a distraction, pure and simple. It’s easy for the media to cover so they latch on to it. The Dems in Congress are using it to stir up populist frenzy – eg, their reactionary and silly “tax the bonuses at 90%” legislation, and the GOP are using it to try to tar and feather Obama while, again, not proposing any solutions of their own other than, “tax cuts, tax cuts, tax cuts”.
Even if we got these bonus dollars back multiplied by 100 it would do nothing to solve our larger problems. And that, my friend, is why it’s a distraction. And both sides and the media are at fault here.

Perhaps we all should be working on much more important matters, such as doing the jobs we are paid to do and not reading blogs during work hours and worrying about the President’s bracket?
Myself included!

So, you’re a “mid-level schlub” working for a financial institution that allows you to play on the computer during the day on the company’s dime? Maybe we’re finally getting the route of the problem in the financial industry.

Democrat for life:”BTW. Guess who the top 3 recipients of campaign cash from AIG were?”
Your numbers are for the *2008* cycle only. In 2004, Bush received about as much from AIG ($160k) as Obama and McCain combined in 2008 ($163k).

It’s pretty standard for financial institutions to prohibit the use of the company computers for personal use. It’s a policy you would have been required to acknowledge with your signature. It doesn’t matter if your at lunch or not. Does your company not require that, or did you just not read it before signing, a la Obama style?

jennifert7:”It’s pretty standard for financial institutions to prohibit the use of the company computers for personal use.”
I do not know of many private companies foolish enough to implement such a policy. That’s pretty much a state government thing, where employees actually have to leave their office and take a long lunch just to do some phone calls and online errands. Private companies judge their employees on productivity.

I’m familiar with the policy and it’s not prohibited, although it obviously should not be abused. But with my lunch hour ending, I must bid you farewell. I have to get back to destroying the economy and earning my huge undeserved bonus. It’s been fun.

I totally agree on that! I just think it’s crazy how – for many libs – it isn’t considered a big deal now that Obama’s hands may be on it, but it was when Bush’s hands were on it.
I’m against the whole thing myself!!! Been outraged for some time!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
It might seem like a “foolish” policy to you but then maybe no company you have ever worked for has found themselves in trouble over such abuse while on company time and equipment. And contrary to your assertion that this is limited to state government employees, nope, that’s simply not true, especially in the case of financial institutions. It’s the companies equipment whether you are on your lunch hour or not. They do not want to open themselves up to security breaches if nothing else.

Give me a break! The coach should just take in consideration the the President is doing this from the stand point of a basketball fan, so it’s no different than anyone else picking, chosing, or making a prediction. And he is a different kind of President. He is accessible(now for those of you who don’t like that, then YOU DO HAVE A PROBLEM)because BAM!he’s an in your face President, and almost everything he does is reported on. Now the fact he was on ESPN, maybe didn’t help, but he even dissed his brother-law. It appears that people just want to hate anything that our President does!

I hope Obama isn’t putting up any money in his pool! Gambling is illegal (for the most part). I hope the Justice Department or Treasury Department are investigating the possible gambling ring that might be operating in the Executive Branch. They should also find out whether this possible gambling ring is connected to any organized crime groups or if it is just illegal gambling between friends and who is the bookie in charge of this possible violation.

90% Tax eh?
Well the bonus contracts were written in April 08, so will all the politicians who just did this, and Obama (who will surely sign the bill), pay back 90% of the contributions they received from AIG after April 08? How about returning 100% of the contributions from AIG execs received after AIG’s collapse and bailout on Sept 15 2008?

These guys don’t need to be serious and focused 24/7.
