Exclusive: Three Israeli Airstrikes Against Sudan
ABC News’ Luis Martinez reports: Israel has conducted three military strikes against targets in Sudan since January in an effort to prevent what were believed to be Iranian weapons shipments from reaching Hamas in the Gaza Strip, ABC News has learned.
Earlier this week, CBSNews.com was the first to report that Israel had conducted an airstrike in January against a convoy carrying weapons north into Egypt to be smuggled into the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.
But actually, since January, Israel has conducted a total of three military strikes against smugglers transporting what were believed to be Iranian weapons shipments destined for Gaza, a U.S. official told ABC News.
The information matches recent reports from Sudanese officials of two airstrikes in the desert of eastern Sudan and the sinking of a ship in the Red Sea carrying weapons.
Jonathan Peled, a spokesman for the Israeli Embassy in Washington, would only say, "No comment," when contacted by ABC News on the matter.
Sudanese officials initially said this week that 39 people riding in 17 trucks were killed in a mid-January airstrike conducted by an unidentified aircraft in a desert area north of the Red Sea port of Port Sudan.
Today, a Sudanese Foreign Ministry representative said there were two separate bombing raids against smugglers in January and February. The Sudanese minister for highways was more specific, saying the airstrikes took place Jan. 27 and Feb. 11.
Arabic broadcaster Al-Jazeera also reported today a Sudanese official’s claim that Israel had sunk a ship carrying weapons.
Israeli officials continue to refuse to confirm or deny the reports of airstrikes, but Thursday Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said, “Israel hits every place it can in order to stop terror, near and far."
In January, the United States signed an agreement with Israel to stop arms smuggling into Gaza. At the time, Israel was conducting a military operation in the Gaza Strip in retaliation for Hamas’ firing of rockets on Israeli towns.
Shortly after the agreement was signed, the U.S. Navy twice boarded a Cypriot ship in the Red Sea that was traveling from Iran to Syria and believed to be carrying Iranian weapons bound for Hamas.
After the boardings were inconclusive, the United States asked Egypt and Cyprus to search the vessel when it made ports of call. Cypriot authorities ultimately found material that could be used to manufacture munitions, which they described as a violation of the U.N. ban on Iranian arms exports.

Thus far Israel has devastated not just Gaza but prior to that Lebanon. Now, they’re running into Sudan and bombing that sovereign country. Am I the only one that sees the pattern here and the fact that Israel is not being held to international law when they do these things?

It’s amazing how we can weave the definition of terror to suit our own needs. A little bit of introspection would in fact reveal that a lot of those who point fingers at terrorists are in fact terrorists themselves. Let’s not use the term war to immediately distance ourselves from terrorism – let’s however examine why we started a war in the first place e.g. to conquer more land for “our people”. Aren’t the people who have their land conquered in a position to define you as a terrorist?

If Israel takes out terrorist targets in Sudan, all the better. Sudan is a failed state and a recruitment ground for Al Queda.
I don’t care what Al Jazeera reports. It has shown itself to be the mouthpiece for Al Queda and are about as “fair and balanced” as Fox News – which is the mouthpiece for the extremist right wing in America.

What would you rather be: A Palestinian in an Israeli jail or a Jewish person in a Palestinian jail? The treatment by the Israelis on all levels has always been more humane. This is why the enenies of Israel are quick to surrender. They know that history has shown the Jewish people do not prefer violence. Many Palestianians and Muslims beleive they are at eternal war with Israel and the West and will be exalted by killing Jews and Christians. This will all end dramatically with the return of Christ.

The Black Africans have been persecuted mercilessly by the Arab Africans. This is the reason there are so many civil wars in Africa. The Arab(Muslim) Africans consider the Black(non-Muslim)Africans to be infidels and believe it is alright to destroy them. Even Africa is a house divided.

Nations have intelligence agencies because proof is almost never shown to the public and if it were there is no credible international court to bring it before. Because rank and file people don’t see the intelligence we can never be sure the proof exists. This is a nasty situation that forces countries like Israel to act before it is too late.

Israel is excellent in getting information and acting on it. They cannot rely on Obama or Clinton for help. The bottom line is that Obama is too busy shoving socialism down the throat of America to even care. Also his childish You Tube video foreign policy is a joke. The laptop warriors are out in full force tonight – justifying Israel’s murderous attacks on yet another weaker foreign country. Lebanon, Syria, Gaza, the West Bank, and now Sudan. What’s next? Iran?
I’m sure that all of you who are defending Israel’s behavior are all peace-loving Christians who value human life above all else too. I bet you also are quick to condemn pro-choice people and violent inner-city criminals too. Ha!
In actuality you’re nothing but laughably hypocritical losers – who take vicarious delight in the suffering of others. What do you care? It’s easy to sit in relative comfort, fat and safe, in the U.S. and take delight in the murder of others far away. Just remember that karma is cruel and has a long memory.

I always find it interesting that those who condemn Israel’s military actions against Hamas and Hizbollah to name a couple of well known terrorist organizations, but they never mention the fact–not myth, not propaganda, but fact that it is Israel who is always responding to terrorist acts done to it? Why is it that that part is always left out of the vitriolic racist anti-Israel/Jewish propaganda? Because it does not fit comfortably with your views of the Palestinian peoples poor state because of vicious Israel and then acts out it’s frustration when a suicide bomber blows up little kids and mothers (and of course their own dumb behinds) indiscriminately on public buses?

Advocates for dialog, exist on both sides. These are the people on whom our news media should focus. Hey yahoos, Israel was stolen from the Jews/Christians who were living there in the fist place, by Arabs. Israel was the land of the Jews for 3500 years before the Arab invasion. Arabs rejected the UN two state solution and started 5 wars (lost em all). Arabs adopted terror long before “Occupation”. While Egypt and Jordan occupied Gaza and the West Bank between 1948 and 1967 both these Arab countries did not form a Palestinian state. Hamas killed more than 500 Jewish woman and children with suicide bombing before Israel invaded Gaza, etc. Every time you go through security at an airport, thank an Arab for the pleasure of waiting in line…and lets thank our Muslim friends for 911.
In 2007 Islam and Judaism’s holiest holidays overlapped for 10 days.
Muslims racked up 397 dead bodies in 94 terror attacks across 10
countries during this time… while Jews worked on their 159th Nobel Prize.

“Occupation” means Israel proper and thus the Jews must end the “occupation”, dismantle the Jewish state and the Jews leave the region.

Israel should stop being a Jewish state when all “Islamic Republics” renounce their religious foundations, become secular and permit the Jews who formally lived in those lands the right to emmigrate and live in peace in their former homes.

We (the US) need to cut our support of Israel. We do not share common interest and Israel is more than capable to support and defend itself. The Israel attack on Gaza was shameful and genocidal. Jimmy Carter is exactly correct in his overall analysis of the situation.

Bombing,shelling,kidnapping,snipering on both sides.

to all those who are defending Israel’s actions,
HOW DARE YOU? I expected to see outrage at this news. Yet, people are actually defending this atrocity like it is the most natural thing in the world. What gives these clowns the right to attack a sovereign nation? Who do they think they are?? And no, its not true that Israel has outlasted every country/empire in the world. Israel has not outlasted most African nations (despite colonization). And Israel is very wrong in assuming that they can mess with Africa like it does with Arabs and America. While Africans are completely incapable of development, they are well versed in art of destruction. If Israel keeps this up, every African nation (including Egypt and other North African nations that have so far held the peace with it), will become a breeding ground for Anti-Israeli movements. And then it will be the end of that great nation that holds you all captive. Somali, that country that doesn’t care for laws or lawlessness, alone can bring Israel to its knees if Israel decides to get on their bad side by messing with Sudan. My two cents, worth a lot more.

Israel better be careful. Israel is digging its own hole just like they did before WWII when they infiltrated the soviet commie party and used its leverage to depopulate Ukraine of 10-15 million people, mostly women and children, in an attempt to form a new state of Israel to gather Jews from the Eastern European region split up by post-WWI re-emergence of independent states. Less than ten year later, they themselves were visited upon a similar horrible faith. Perhaps there is a higher intelligence watching us and there is justice in this world, just not instantaneous, so we don’t always associate cause with its true effect.

Israel is a fraction of the size and population of most of these Muslim countries and doesn’t have all that oil revenue for buying armaments…and yet the Israelis still kick their behinds whenever they have to.
The idea that Israel is more powerful because they’re big like Russia, Red China or the U.S. is laughable. They’ve defeated multiple attacking armies from all directions at once. They have their stuff together because they aren’t still living in the Middle Ages.
The Leftists don’t want to admit the inherent corruption, moral bankruptcy, ineptitude and disorganization of the violent Muslim countries. If they get their rear ends kicked by the Israelis time and again, then that is their fault for not being able to defend themselves.
Like Egypt, you would think the others would have learned by now that violence is not the answer to their problems.

With the greatest of respect, I strongly urge several of the people here to get a grip.
The Israeli Government does make mistakes; but to accuse Israel of genocide is nonetheless patently ridiculous. You may not like some of the civilian casualties that inevitably occur during urban warfare (even when, as Israel did, you warn civilians to leave combat zones), you may be concerned that individual soldiers may have abused their power; to equate unfortunate accidents or isolated psychos with any concerted plan is ridiculous. It seems reasonable to note, of course, that one of the nations in this article has been charged with committing genocide: Sudan, where 500000 people if not more have died in Darfur. Whatever your view on Israel, less than 1% of that have died in the conflict there. Might I suggest that there are bigger issues?
More importantly, I find the way some people here generalize and demonize every soldier of the IDF is outstandingly ridiculous. It is fine to object to the War (many Israelis do so), in the same way you may object to the war in Iraq; to object to ALL the soldiers, who fight firstly because many of their families would be at risk if they did not, and secondly because they have to or face jail, is terrifically unjust.
Finally, a slight rebuke to my own side – please don’t equate ALL criticism of Israel with antisemitism. Some of this stuff here undoubtedly is: people who believe that Israel should be removed from the map, which would by necessity entail millions of Jews dying, are generally antisemites; people who mock the Bible are generally antisemites; people who would deny Israel ANY form of self-defense are usually antisemites (unless they would expand this to all nations – extreme pacifists may be unrealistic, but aren’t antisemites). BUT, constructive criticism of Israeli policy and actions is NOT antisemitic, any more than disagreeing with a policy of the US Government is anti-American. Political criticism is usually OK; overbroad stereotypes, existential criticism and mocking of Judaism are obviously not. Hamas TV is antisemitic; the ISM is sometimes; the BBC, for all its many flaws and biases, is generally not.
Finally, please make sure you know what you’re talking about before you open your mouths or keyboards. There’s nothing worse than trying to explain stuff to someone who’s ranting about stuff they don’t really know about. Israel’s the size of New Hampshire, and is less than 8 miles wide from Tel Aviv to the West Bank. Get your facts right.

It amazes me that people can argue that Israel is doing anything wrong by defending itself against missile and other attacks. Give me a break. What country would sit on it´s hands and allow such things to happen? Isreal only responded to Hamas after THOUSANDS of missiles were lobbed against it´s citizens. Civilian casualties–of Palestiians– were part of Hamas plan from the start. Why else fire their rockets from schools, apartment buildings and mosques? They are sacrificing the very people they claim to represent in order to turn world opinion further against Israel as part of their long term strategy to destroy Israel. Be outraged against Hamas for the deaths of Palestinians. But then, the Palestinians voted them into office–a terrorist group whose charter and every action calls for the destruction of Israel. You reap what you sow.

It is possible for both Israel and Palestine to be wrong and for there to be no good guys in this scenario. It amazes me that Americans can see how Israel is defending itself in killing Muslims to avoid rocket attacks, but they cannot see how Palestinians are defending themselves against inhumane treatment, having their land stolen, and being marginalized in their own country. How do people who believe that it’s self-defense to shoot an intruder in your home who wants to take your stuff is justified, but don’t see how fighting back against people bulldozing your neighborhoods, threatening to exterminate you, targeting your hospitals and rescue teams with bombs, and having rabbis egg soldiers on to to take your land in the name of their God (something admitted by Israeli soldiers) is not self-defense?

Get the facts straight. The Monchegorsk is a Russian owned container vessel flying under the Cypriot flag. It didn’t just go from Iran to Syria, like most container ships, it had several stops. Haaretz cited “Israeli officials” (a most dubious source) as saying that it had shells for T-72 tanks on it. If so, that wouldn’t surprise anyone since the Syrian army has Russian made T-72′s, and they would obviously supply them. Neither Hamas nor Hezbollah have T-72′s. There is no proof that the ammunition actually exists, there is no proof that it was Iranian, there isn’t even any proof that it was destined for Syria.

israeli – A democracy gives all its citizens equal rights and opportunities. The Arabs in Israel are second class citizens in both representation and funding. Thus Israel is not a democracy but rather a Jewish state. Israel can operate within its borders as it wishes. However its actions in the occupied territories are inexcusable. Luckily Livni realizes that the settlements and checkpoints need to go. I am just real tired of funding Israel in acquiring weapons and then dropping them on everybody. People attack Israel because it carries out atrocities daily. Most of the world realizes this. Now that the US is going broke, maybe Israel will start to do the right things.

Iran is undemocratic because the Supreme Council of Ayatollahs gets rid of any candidates they deem not hardcore Islamic enough. So by the time elections roll around there’s no difference between candidates. Meanwhile, over in Israel, they have Arab Knesset members who think Israel (and all Jews for that matter) should be destroyed by Islam just like HAMAS says in its charter or when their leaders quote the famous hadith about murdering Jews behind rocks and trees.
I’m not sure if that’s very smart, Israel letting those who want to destroy it into parliament, but it is democratic compared to the sham democracy in Iran.

flash override- read the verdict of the israeli supreme court of kaadan. it was decided that the jewish charcter of the country DOES NOT allow it to discriminate in distribution of land. on the contrary, we should take from judaism the ideas that complies with democracy. (and again – i KNOW that there is still descrimination in that field – yes. i admit. there is still a lot to do there.)

israeli – I want Israel to prosper. I just want the Palestinians to not live in some sort of apartheid situation where they have no hope of self-determination. I believe America’s support of this setup will cause us a lot of pain as it already has with 911, etc.

The US must completely rethink its so called “special” relationship with Israel. The only thing special about it is that it’s a huge PONZI SCHEME around our necks. The US is being taken to the cleaners financially and morally by this rogue nation. Israel’s claiming to be a democratic partner in the Middle East is the biggest canard of all. It’s no more democratic than was the apartheid regime in South Africa.

How can you call it an atrocity when what they target are implements of war: munitions supplies, smugglers, and fortifications that are launching points for missiles aimed at civilian targets. It is the arabs that bomb children in school buses, coffee shops, shopping centers and weddings, etc. It is the arabs who kidnap and torture even decapitate non-military. Before you use that word, look at the actions of the people and the government of which you are speaking

At the time, Israel was conducting a military operation in the Gaza Strip in retaliation for Hamas’ firing of rockets on Israeli towns.
————————————-
Please do some journalism before passing on this obvious lie. Israel never kept the terms of the June agreement to significantly diminish the blockade and to not target Gazans. In November it killed 6 Gazans and that is when Hamas resumed rockets. Israel had been planning this attack all along.
It’s time that we put pressure on this rogue country that flouts international law. As Naomi Klein and many others suggest, we should boycott, divest, and sanction Israel and it’s supporters until they follow international law. They should also be prosecuted for numerous war crimes for the slaughter in Gaza. Most U.S. politicians are in Israel’s pocket and should be lobbied or removed from office.

The “war on terror” is the perfect cover for Israel. They can accuse any person or group of being terrorists or being implicated in terrorism. Then they can blow them up, eradicate and exterminate. They should celebrate 9/11 every year as a national holiday. Now they can direct their violence against anyone at anytime… and we, as Americans, are their partners in crime.

Terrorism in uniform with advanced technology while hiding behind the excuse that you are simply defending your interests and your people is every bit as terroristic as terrorism without uniforms with primitive technology and hiding behind the excuse that you are simply defending your interests and those of your people. The only difference is the uniform. As the bumper sticker says…”War is just terrorism with a bigger budget!”

Israel is also bombing Palestinians are smuggling food, medicine and weapons to defend and protect themselves because Israel wont give them access to these necessities. Not even electricity.

Israel has always been persecuted and always will be-which is why they have a Jewish State. Having their own state means they have some better than normal safety within it. Even though The Israeli’s only posess a fraction of their traditional mid-east homeland they are always called occupiers and racists by their neighbors. Looking at this problem from a modern secular democratic point of view does make Israel look like the bad guy. Israel must stay in a defensive posture to protect itself as they can never be a secular State. Sometimes the best defence is a good offence.
Posted by: Mark | March 28, 2009, 6:04 pm 6:04 pm
Mark – They are occupiers because of what is happening in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. I am all for Israel being there now as long as they stay within the UN mandated borders. If they do and are still attacked, they can take the gloves off, but currently they are responsible for the Palestinians well-being.

I wonder if the weapons Israel used in these attacks were “smuggled” like the Hellfire missiles used to destroy a Lebanese ambulance which records say were in the US Marines arsenal. What would the reaction be if Sudan were to make strikes inside of Israel to defend themselves. If Hamas used Apache helicopters and Hellfire missiles would they cease to be “terrorists”? The hypocrisy of our relationship with Israel is repugnant

When Isreal is negatively criticized from a muslim or arab nation- be aware the critisicm is towards the ZIONIST movement who has nothing to do with judaism and the jewish faith which is respected and tolerated alongside christianity in most if not all arab and muslim nations (excluding some Corrupt gov. who from time to time persecute some Isreali entities within their country in retaliation to atrocities comminted in gaza and west bank)… Isreal was officially established and recognized by the superpowers in 1948- post1948- palestinian(christians/muslims/bedioun/original arab inhabitants) were exiled, killed, raped, massacred during wars, raids, occupation- AND U EXPECT PEACE LOVING PPL AND HUMAN RIGHTS PPL TO CARE AND SUPPORT ISREAL ? Resistance with some diplomatic initiatives has kept Isreal from committing geneciode/ethnic cleansing- Condemn all acts of violence or disrespect for a nation’s soverienty especially Sudan..its sad that Isreal has not abided by or accepted and implemented ANY of THE 200 UN Resolutions issued against it- until then resistance from the oppressed towards the opressers WILL REMAIN until justice for those palestinian families/lebanese families/iraqi families, sudanese families/ afghanastani families… has been recieved.. 1 God, 1 holy state, 1 message of peace, 1 world, 1 human race, jews/muslims/christians have lived side by side through all conquering empires in Jerusleum and judaia and samaria- UNTIL Zionists/Capitalists/Elitests/Bankers created a State of Isreal made up of settlements and millitarized rule with former terrorist families(livni, Barak, Sharon) ruling to tame/control/even destroy religious ambitions and movements that threaten their new world order- Peace/Salam/Shalom/Au Revoir

The U.S. openly provides weapons to Israel. The U.S. does this because Israel is a small democracy that has common goals with the U.S. One of the goals is to preserve the democracy at all costs even if it means attacking a small weapons plant purposely built in a Palestinian school. Maximum international sympathy is guaranteed for hamas when their leaders are killed while traveling via ambulance or making weapons in a school. Nobody wants to have innocent Palestinian women and children killed except, of course, Hamas-because they know these “martyrs” will give Israel an international blackeye.

So Israel attacks the Sudan. This is the same innocent Sudan that has massacred over 250,000 people by most reports. The same Sudan who has misplaced 2 million from their homes? Oddly enough, the victims are African, and not Arabic, and therefore there has been not ONE Arab country to come out and even speak against them. Good for Israel.
Posted by: seth | March 28, 2009, 8:57 pm 8:57 pm
What we all say here is moot. Israel will do what it must to protect it’s citizenry regardless. During the raid on Entebbe in the 1980′s Israeli pilots flew thousands of miles over Arabic lands and communicated in the Arab language to fool those listening on the ground into thinking they were friendlies. Examples like this are numerous. Never underestimate the Jewish People’s ingenuity and ability to survive and moreover flourish. Many others have in history and they did so at their own peril.

If only the peace loving palestinians and muslims could gain power over the jihad loving palestinians and muslims. Unfortunately the jihadis intimidate the and isolate the peacelovers. This plays out in many muslim communities to the point where the non jihadis keep quiet. Jews and Christians are not infidels and should not be enslaved or killed by holy war loving muslims like those in Sudan. The leaders of Sudan practice a nasty brand of Islam and Israel knows it and will correctly stop at nothing to prevent a Sudanese weapons pipeline from being established against Israel.

Israel evacuates population centers in the West Bank and Gaza in 1994 after Oslo…and the Palestinians respond with a suicide-bombing campaign that kills and maims hundreds of Israelis and destroys whatever tenuous consensus for peace that ever existed inside Israel.
Israel evacuates Lebanon in 2000…and Hezbollah invents the Shebba Farms controversy in order to justify continued attacks on the Jewish state.
Israel evacuates Gaza in 2005…and Hamas responds with an orchestrated campaign of rocket attacks against the Jewish state.
Which side is committed to perpetual war?

The State of Israel is a failed concept, and it is not sustainable in its current form. The sooner they get out of their denial and face this fact, the sooner they stop pinching tax dollars from Americans to support their oppression, the sooner their apartheid and injustice will stop, and the better for the Palestinians and the rest of the world.

Israel is the United State’s biggest ally. There is no other country that will stand by the US, always. Israel is the 4th largest supplier of weapons in the World. You think they need American weapons? America needs Israel not to develop more of their own weapons so they don’t sell them to China or Russia. The US doesn’t want to compete with more Israeli made weapons. Israel is the US’s biggest ally. Israel offered a Palestinian state in 2000, withdrew from the Gaza strip in 2005 as a goodwill gesture, and Israel’s present PM offered again a Palestinian state for peace and there was no response nor counter offer. The Palestinian leaders work only for Arab governments who will only support them if they work towards destroying Israel. Israel needs a Palestinian state. Palestinians know that.

“The State of Israel is a failed concept…”
Indeed? Contrast the Jewish state, where mosques abound, and where Muslims elect their own representatives to the Knesset and local governing bodies,…with the Arab/Muslim world, where religious minorities are mercilessly persecuted, like the Bahai, Jews and Christians in Iran, like the Ahmadis, Christians and Hindus in Pakistan, and like the Christians and Jews throughout the Arab world. In Saudi Arabia, the mere possession of a Bible is a crminal offense.
This convoluted world-view of the Islamo-Left, expressed by many of the posters above, is such that black is white, good is bad, self-defense is genocide, and the religious aparthied that predominates throughout the Islamic world is pefectly normative, while Israel, the one country in the region that protects the rights of religious minorities among its citizenry, is vilified as the fountain of all evil.
Orwell would be impressed.

If a reasonning is based on good/evil, it is flawed at the very base anyway. Good/evil don’t exist in nature state, it was only invented by humans to separate what they think is good for them what they think is not. Since all cultures are different, good/evil references (if existing) are different as well, and there is absolutely no “meta” good/evil scale.
But people always prefer the easier way, it’s intellectual laziness.
On my part, I condemn violent acts against civilians, would these violent act be military, political, social or whatever. In this regard, of course many “arab” countries are guilty, but Israel is no better and should not use issues in other countries as an excuse.
I have read people talking about muslims fighting each other. So what ? How exactly does that justify Israel actions ?
This is all done to bring people into thinking in a binar way : good vs evil. And most simple minded sheep openly apply to this simple and obviously biased model. The only thing left to do is to put in the “good” category (more importantly in the “evil” category) what you want to be in there so that people can use that in their daily thinking.
Be aware I am not saying that good/evil don’t exist, I am saying it was CREATED based on natural feelings of “what’s is good for my survival / what is not good for my survival”. And that with multiple cultures comes different goods and wrongs. Understanding this is a good start in stopping demonizing other and making them appear like animals to justify any behavior.
ps: always get multiple information sources and cross them. You can’t expect to get proper information from one source only. Never.
Posted by: Todd | March 30, 2009, 8:33 am 8:33 am
Todd’s screed above is the typical world-view of the moral relativist.
Palestinian suicide bombers and the rockets launched from Gaza explicitly target Israeli civilians to maximize the psychological toll of mass terror; Israeli military responses explicitly target Hamas fighters. This is why over 700 Hamas gunmen were documented as having been killed in the recent fighting, more than half of all Palestinian casualties (there were no doubt additional undocumented gunmen among the remainder of casualties). But in Todd’s morally vacuous world, the two sides and their respective methodologies are indistinguishable.
Todd goes on to play word games about “good and evil” in his myopic embrace of multicultural relativism. We are instructed to believe that if Muslims stone adulteresses to death, amputate the limbs of thieves, and kill those Muslims who convert to another faith, we’re all supposed to accept this in non-judgmental fashion as a part of the wonderfully diverse cultural patrimony of mankind.
Sorry. Doesn’t wash. These barbarisms must be characterized for exactly what they are, and the culture that perpetuates them must be condemned and struggled against, lest it become universalized.

Israel has over half a million people living on Palestinian land. To put in perspective, that would be like if a foreign power gained control of the USA, allowed 100 million of their people to settle in the USA, while demolishing existing housing to clear the way for their own. What do you think the response of the American people would be to this? Do you think there would be a lot of “terrorist” activities going on?
Now you have a clue as the extent of the problem and what is causing the problem.
Posted by: GetaClue | March 31, 2009, 7:45 pm 7:45 pm
Geta Clue’s analysis is flawed on several levels…
1) Israel unilaterally removed all Jews from Gaza in 2005 preceding its military evacuation. Why then, after the withdrawal, were the Palestinians of Gaza compelled to fire thousands of rockets into Israel? Answer: the Jihadi imperative. The Palestinians were not interested in consolidating control over Gaza and building a viable state; they were interested only in continuing the Jihad against Israel.
Should Israel evacuate the West Bank in similar fashion, the pattern will be repeated, except that instead of Ashkelon and other southern cities coming under rocket and morter fire, Israel’s populated coastal plain will be targeted, creating havoc and compelling many Israelis to emigrate, which is the precusor for the end of the Jewish state, which is exactly what the Palestinians hope for.
There can be no peace between Israel and Palestine because the Palestinians are committed to Israel’s destruction, and no amount of concessions will alter that reality. Israeli territorial concessions will only further Palestinian objectives.
