First Family To Plant White House Veggie Garden

ABC News’ Brian Hartman Reports: President Obama’s latest shovel-ready project is close to home — in fact, right in his own yard. In an effort to promote healthy eating, the first family will be planting a vegetable garden right on the White House grounds.

ABC News’ Ann Compton and Sunlen Miller report that the new White House vegetable garden will be dug up and planted on the South grounds of the White House — near the fountain but out of view of the main house.

Though the 16-acre complex is maintained by the National Park Service, one worker who preferred to remain anonymous assured ABC News that National Park Service staff won’t do the sowing and planting. The White House residence staff will handle that.

As first reported online by food writer Eddie Gehman Kohan, who reports on food issues related to the Obamas, First Lady Michelle Obama told Oprah Winfrey’s "O" magazine, "We’re … working on a wonderful new garden project."

In the April issue of the magazine, Mrs. Obama tells Winfrey, "We want to use it as a point of education, to talk about health and how delicious it is to eat fresh food, and how you can take that food and make it part of a healthy diet."

A variety of organic food and sustainable agriculture advocates have been pressing the Obamas to plant such a garden.

Well, let’s see how the bitter right-wingers can attack this one. LOL

What is going to be next, some chickens running around the White House????
and some clothes lines in the “back yard”????

LOL. It took 22 minutes is all, for tutilal to post a comment criticizing the garden.

William – LOL, exactly.
I think this is a good idea. Most of us should return to planting small household gardens for both economic and health reasons. My brother-in-law plants a wonderful vegetable garden every year. I love getting the fresh greens, tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, etc.

Seems like a better use of the president’s time than all that brush clearing Bush flew back to Texas to do. (Although I doubt he’ll do more than some token planting time with the wife and kids – no one wants to weed a garden if they had a staff that will do it!)

And the first dimwit has made an appearance. Not only are home-grown fruits and vegetables healthier, more importantly they can save significant amounts of money. Yet, already there’s a post by “tutilal” insinuating that the Obama’s are “trashing up” the White House by planting a garden. This garden is a good example that more people should follow.

Posted by: Kevin | March 18, 2009, 1:14 pm 1:14 pm

and wouldn’t that will be more tax money spent. Who will pay for the maintenance of the garden, the water, seeds, etc….

What is going to be next? Check your White House history and you will find the Obamas are not the first to have a garden. As any native Washingtonian can tell you, the White House is a family home as well as the President’s office. I’m glad the new First Family is setting a good example by eating a healthy diet. There are plenty of obese Americans who need to get that message!

Excellent idea – health and economy wise. More people should consider eating food grown locally – it would save the country enormous amounts of fuel.
For example why would anyone in Florida every ‘need’ to buy an orange grown in California – we have plenty of local oranges to choose from.

Yay Eddie with the scoop! We celebrate this move by the White House and we celebrate all of you who are growing it, cooking it, brewing it, baking it, canning it, sprouting it and building it yourselves!

If that’s what the Obama family wants to do with the property, fine. Some Presidents build putting greens, some build basketball courts. Woodrow Wilson let sheep graze on the White House lawn-See the link below:

I would rather let the discussion center on actual policies that make a real difference in my life than argue about this.

Maybe this will prove to a lot of the Home Owners Associations that they should allow gardens, clothes lines, awnings, solar panels, etc.
Many HOAs have become obstructionists, actually dictatorial, in their zeal to protect our neighborhoods from ourselves.

Obama thanked himself as a joke because the staff reran Obama’s remarks for the next speaker, and he had to get up to straighten things out for said speaker. I know it’s easier to read the headlines than the article, but give it a try some time why don’t you?

TrueBlue-
It gets even worse than oranges from California here, I saw a bin of oranges and tangerines from China in a central Florida supermarket just yesterday. I live in the middle of thousands of acres of citrus and there’s citrus being sold from the other side of the planet. I’ll stick with what I grow in my yard whenever possible.

Why not chickens on the White House lawn? I have chickens in my backyard and they provide me with lovely, nutrient-rich eggs every day. Hundreds of times better than factory farm eggs where they make 2 or 3 hens occupy a 12X12-inch cage. Mine feed on bugs, grass, and weeds the way they were meant to eat. I think it would set a wonderful example for the American people. This is absolutely inspiring!

If they keep some chickens better watch their step or they’ll have to wash the chicken poop off with a garden hose…
But gardening is cool. I think they should go for it!

I think I heard somwhere that the victory gardens produced 40% of our output at one time. The agro business will not be happy :)

Posted by: Kerry | March 18, 2009, 6:16 pm 6:16 pm

Brilliant. The Obama family is setting an example that hopefully we can all follow in our own way. It’s a win-win: save money, eat healthier food, set a great example, secure their food source, be more sustainable in eating habits.
Also – This is not the first victory garden at the White House. The Roosevelt’s had one as well! It’s about time this is re-established.

Posted by: Valj | March 18, 2009, 6:31 pm 6:31 pm

Apparently some of you are too good to grow your own food. Somehow it is ‘trashy’ to have chickens running around and food (the horror!) growing in your yard. DO you not eat? Do you have someone that wipes your ass for you too?? What is it that makes you too good to be connected to your own livelihood?

Posted by: GardenGirl | March 18, 2009, 6:51 pm 6:51 pm

Doesn’t the White House trust our food supply? Maybe if we all had our own garden we wouldn’t need this massive budget Obama is asking for as well as $11 Trillion dept he keeps growing. Another example he set was accepting over $100,000 from our friends at AIG.

Posted by: Lola | March 18, 2009, 7:43 pm 7:43 pm

Well he shouldn’t trust the food supply, with so much chemicals used and the soil depleted by the farming methods used. Not that he objects – he appointed the Governor from Monsanto as his Agriculture Secretary.
Is it safe to plant food on the White House lawn? My guess is they’ve been using chemicals for decades on it. How much poison is in the soil that the plants will uptake? Will Sasha and Malia be poisoned by food from the White House garden? Stay tuned.

Three cheers for the Obama,s. Lead by example is what I say. Hopefully they will get their hands in the dirt rather than leaving it to staff.
When I need to escape the world’s worries I find myself in my garden. President Obama needs to be careful as I imagine some days he may not want to leave his garden.
Obviously some leaving comments here are nor gardeners, they should try it.

Give me a break. I’ve been gardening ALL my life and I’ve never expected adulation for it. I have always used a clothesline too. You sheeple are absurd. Wonder how many urban dwellers do it. Of course we’d have to buy the manure, seeds, fertizlier and volunteer for the upkeep.

Posted by: KansasGirl | March 18, 2009, 10:37 pm 10:37 pm

……and so what if he had chickens and clothes lines?!? Before we turned everything into this impersonal, plastic food eating culture we are today we surprisingly raised hens to lay eggs and roasters to eat. Before dryers we hung our clothes. There is nothing wrong with growing your own food…in fact it is completely RIGHT! We as Americans need to stop criticizing based on someone’s more simple, back to basic ideals. For those of you upset about your tax dollars going to this should really sit down and price this out. Growing your own food and maintaining a garden costs less than buying your produce at the store. I promise you, seeds don’t break the budget…..

Planting a garden is all well and good, but as long as people realize that victory gardens can not replace our agriculture system there is no real issue. The problem arises when sustainable foodie locavores try to warp the practicality of a personal garden into movement to denigrate food systems they do not agree with. The vast majority of the population lives in urban centers and that’s only going to increase. To think that most or even a large portion of our population can derive all their dietary needs from a home garden is asinine.

Posted by: Russ | March 19, 2009, 9:04 am 9:04 am

Yeah! Local organic gardening. A great role model. Now I hope Congress will vote AGAINST the HR875 Food Safety Modernization Act which will destroy small organic farms by requiring poisonous pesticides. If passed, Pres. Obama must veto it, or he’ll have to spray poisons on his new garden.

Historically speaking, Victory Gardens were intended to supplement rations…not be an “end all and be all.” And they were more common in urban/suburban areas because rural regions were already into agriculture.
My family is full of farmers and gardeners. They lived their lives mostly in rural areas. And I know far less than them about how to grow food, but have opted to learn now. There are a whole lot of us doing that now. And we come from across the political spectrum.
At root (pun intended because we all owe it to ourselves to be upbeat over something benign like a WH garden), the movement to home gardens has several impetuses, not the least of which is a way to ensure food security in a rocky economy. We’ve got generations of folks who owe it to themselves to learn to grow food. It’s a basic life skill…like doing the laundry.
If people who choose to have a garden–whether they tend it themselves or hire someone–opt to explore other sustainable living steps, that’s great.
Let’s sidestep the stridency on either side for once. Trust me, as much as I support organics and regard highly efforts to preserve non-GMO seeds, we’re on the edge of a potentially historic food security crisis right now that demands we look for some workable solution.
Ultimately, we need this move by the Obamas to be celebrated and used to encourage others, especially for the poorest among us who look to our nation’s leaders for guidance and role modeling.

Posted by: quotidian | March 19, 2009, 10:55 am 10:55 am

All this talk about watermelons and cotton and chickens just show how morally bankrupt some people are. The hatred these people live with every day must poison the air — and people — around them. Talk about toxic! How can you be against a vegetable garden?

I believe this will be the second veg garden @ the White House. It has been reported that there is a roof garden for use by the WH chefs put in at the request of Mrs. Bush.

Posted by: RR | March 19, 2009, 11:55 am 11:55 am

It’s good but not original. The History channel January aired a “tour of the White House”. The kitchen was tiny and the chef is growing herbs on the roof!

Posted by: stuff | March 19, 2009, 12:05 pm 12:05 pm

Well, considering that for a long time we were an agrarian-based society, the idea that previous presidents would have had gardens is hardly, um, new.
And you’re going to have to go back a lot further than the Bushes…or the Clintons (who had pots of herbs on the roof)…or any other president this century.
For those folks legitimately interested in the history of Presidential gardens, there’s a little video here (“Garden of Eatin”) here:

A nice article to be sure. It is too bad I live in the City of Atlanta, where my water bill is so high that to water a 20′ by 10′ vegetable garden cost me between $200-$300 month. Cheaper to go to the Farmer’s market by a long shot.
So until OTHER laws.. as if we need more laws.. get passed to provide affordable water right here in the good ole’ USA..
No veggies in my yard this year!
:-(
PS: I was on CBS46 twice over the past 3 years about the water bills.. along with a bunch of other citizens. It really is that bad.

I think this is a fantastic venture and a model for all Americans to follow. We have a shortage of organic farming which is needed. Our agricultural soil is depleted in nutrients. With all the pesticides and diseases entering this country from over our borders, peoples health will improve. If you have the space, plant your own.

Posted by: Janice | March 19, 2009, 2:39 pm 2:39 pm

I hoped when I first started reading this story that “they” were going to plant a garden. I was disapointed when I read that the Whitehouse Staff was going to do the work. Now my tax dollars are paying for a servant’s labor! It is not right.
One of the best things about a veggi garden is the work and planning that goes into it.

Fantastic! This is wonderful news.
And to all of you crying about your tax dollars being spent etc etc–who do you think pays for the White House grocery shopping? That food doesn’t magically appear in the refrigerator.
Thankfully, our new WH residents are putting forward a good example on how it is healthier–and cheaper–to eat locally grown food.

I don’t think anyone has suggested that the average American can replace agri-business with the produce from a home garden. It is supplemental and a heck of a lot cheaper to grow organically at home than to buy it in a grocery store. Even the smallest yard can produce hundreds of pounds of fresh vegetables and fruit a year, a lot of which can be preserved by canning or freezing. And those who live in apartments can grow herbs or lettuce in pots on a balcony or in a sunny window. It’s just a matter of wanting badly enough to do it.
And even in NYC you can have chickens!

While they are at it they should make federal laws that override neighborhood groups, CCRs (condos) and home associations rules against growing your own food.

Posted by: stuff | March 19, 2009, 7:48 pm 7:48 pm

WOW
I can’t believe this caused such a stir. Pretty soon everyone – every single person – will have to grow their own food. Not many folks who have commented here have read the open letter from Michael Pollan to (at that time) president-elect Obama.
The “way it is” in terms of agriculture – isn’t working. Time to go backwards a bit. Maybe 60 years ago, almost everyone grew their own food. It simply was not available – the kind of stuff you can get so easily (and so underpriced, compared to the environmental cost) at the supermarket!
I think what they are doing is great.

Well done – he’s doing something right.

About time! How about all you city people get off your duffs and get outside and plant gardens and container gardens if you want to taste real food and not those grown by “big” agriculture. There is no reason why everyone cannot grow their own seasonal food and learn how to freeze and can with no preservatives and eat healthy instead of bad for you big business farming.
If you want to get back to the healthy way of living, learn from our ancestors and see the costs of health care and obesity go down immediately with the exercise that it takes to maintain a garden. You will have no time for tv or video games.
It gets you to have to be involved with your children and have everyone pitch in to do the daily chores.
Guess what? Weeds are actually good and provide beneficial feeding for insects, every thing has a reason for being on this earth, we are all one, nature and man. That is the way it was created. But man has to go and take control and disrupt the order it was meant to be and destroyed some very good practices that should have not been changed for the sake of time and easy meals.
Hurray for the family farm!

What about HR 875? That bill would criminalize the organic garden. If just a few organic gardens poped up in our cities and suburbs we could cut down on going to the supersized grocery stores. Victory gardens are the seeds to a stronger America. HR 875 must not pass. Monsonto execs behind it should go to jail for conspiracy and treason.

Let’s just hope more people follow the Obamas’ example. So many people don’t even bother to take care of their lawn here. It’s interesting to know our president cares about growing food.

I think that planting a veggie garden not only is an example, but it may be less money than maintaining a “perfect lawn”. How many personnel does it take to water, mow and fertilize a “perfect” lawn? I am sure that the garden, if well-designed, will not only take less water and provide fresh food in season, as well as provide an example to others. My only concern is the quantity of lawn chemicals that may still reside in the soil. I hope that they made a thorough test of the soil beforehand, otherwise it is a great idea! (My 2cents worth)
Those of you who live in cities can grow food plants in containers or join a community garden, if there is one available in your area. The surplus can supply all the expense, if starting it fresh, as well as donate extra food to the needy. It is good to encourage more of these “Victory Gardens” and community gardens. What would be the harm of eating what you grow? Also, encourage others who are now unemployed or underemployed to help build new ones.
Am I alone in this way of thinking? Many children think that food comes from markets, and have no idea the food is grown in the soil.
Another idea is to start new community gardens. for infromation regarding that, you can go to: http://www.smarter.com, as they have a lot ideas on this subject. There is always Dave’s Garden, http://www.davesgarden.com, as well as gardenweb.com

That’s wonderful idea for White House and I personally want to congrats to Mrs. Obama on taking such a bold action. It is very much attractive and healthy activity to have own planted vegetable in home garden. If all home gardens start planting their own vegetables then there is no more threat of economic crunch. Once again I congrats Mrs. Obama who is planting vegetables in her home garden (white house).

Wow I bet they’d have the best looking garden in the country. That’d be an amazing place to pot around in the soil. Good on ‘em!
