Geithner Defends Tax Hikes for Wealthy

ABC News’ Matthew Jaffe reports: Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner today defended the Obama administration’s proposed tax increases for the wealthy and promised to stamp out offshore tax havens.

With the country mired in a 14-month long recession, the administration has stated it will raise taxes for couples earning more than $250,000 a year starting in two years, drawing repeated criticism from Republicans.

"I want to emphasize that we propose no new revenue increases in our budget, none until we are safely into recovery in 2011," Geithner told the Senate Finance Committee today. "At that point, when the consensus of private forecasters projects significantly positive growth rates for the overall economy, the budget restores tax rates to the pre-2001 level for families making more than a quarter of a million dollars a year."

In response to a question from Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., Geithner also promised to stamp out offshore tax havens which he contends are unfair.

Nelson cited a recent report by the Government Accountability Office that of the 100 largest publicly traded corporations in this country, 83 have subsidiaries in offshore tax havens. One such corporation is Citigroup, a major recipient of government bailout funds. Nelson said the bank has 437 subsidiaries in offshore tax havens, including 90 in the Cayman Islands.

"It’s not fair to people who pay their taxes for people to continue to have the ability to evade U.S. taxes by taking advantage of offshore tax havens and a range of other provisions in current law which makes it possible to evade U.S. taxes," Geithner replied. "That’s why in the budget there is a clear commitment by the president to come to the Congress with a comprehensive set of proposals for reducing international tax avoidance. As part of that, we’re going to have to bring a much more ambitious effort to deal with offshore tax havens."

Geithner noted that the administration’s proposed budget includes a request for increased enforcement resources via the Internal Revenue Service to address tax avoidance problems.

But in his three-hour testimony before the committee today, the Treasury chief also received some stern reprimands about his own tax issues.

Earlier this decade, Geithner failed to pay about $40,000 in taxes on time. Although he apologized for the mistake and paid back the taxes, his confirmation appeared in jeopardy at one point.

Sen. Jim Bunning, R-Ky., blasted Geithner for his testimony yesterday at a hearing before a House of Representatives committee.

"I listened to your entire testimony before the Ways and Means Committee yesterday. Unfortunately, you misspoke," Bunning said. "This committee, the Finance Committee, did not approve of the way your taxes were handled. You stated to the Ways and Means Committee that we approved it."

Geithner denied making the comment.

"Well, you can play both tapes," Bunning responded. "And you will find out that you misstated."

"Senator, what I said is that you had disclosed — that I had disclosed fully to the committee, and the committee had put back into the public domain," Geithner noted. "That’s the only thing I said yesterday."

Buffet is someone who thinks the rich are undertaxed. He found out that his secretary was paying the same tax rate as him.
It is a touchy subject though, and those with that kind of money have a lot of infuence on Washington. It’ss be a tough sell.

Posted by: reason | March 4, 2009, 2:04 pm 2:04 pm

reason:” He found out that his secretary was paying the same tax rate as him.”
Actually, he was paying a much lower tax rate; Buffett was paying a final total tax of 17.7% while his $60k/yr secretary was paying a final total 30% (2006 tax year). Congress has a tendency to pass good sounding measures that only really help the higher income earners. The lower middle class just doesn’t have the acumen to take advantage of pre-paid medical accounts, pre-paid childcare, Roth/SIMPLE/SEP/401k, or even mortgage interest deductions (just to name a few of the tax saving I get that my lower-paid sister does not).

What’s so controversial? If you benefit more from our system, you should be obliged to put more back in. It’s common sense. The only obstacle here is simple greed.

The wealthy have been taking this country down too long. The republicans gave them tax cuts in the hopes they would create jobs and all they did was hide their money overseas and use the rest to party. They didn’t create jobs. These people have been traitors to the betterment of our society and need to be held accountable or get the heck out of our country!

ABC thinks they are helping….but Geithner looks even more like a fool. He has NO right saying ANYTHING to the nation about taxes or unpaid taxes. NOTHING he says is credible.

Someone making 260,00 a year would pay an additional $5.75 a week in taxes, and the Republicans are screaming bloody murder about it? Where were they when Bush and Cheney were sending air force transports full of cash to Iraq, to be handed out in briefcases to – well, nobody knows who got it – with no accountability whatsoever? And they’re busting a vein because some poor slob may get more than her/his fair share of unemployment benefit money?
Hey Republicans – find something to do besides scream, and next time you say something like “We have a plan that costts less and creates more jobs”, follow it up with “And the plan is ….”

Are you listening Hollywood? They are coming after YOU! How much will you support him when you lose over half of your income to taxes? When you can’t pay for your Malibu beach front home because us regular folks won’t be going to movies since we can’t afford them — thanks to being taxed to death. Heard about cap & trade? Remember, Obama the campaigner promised “utility rates will go sky high” but he’s for it. He’s doing it. Are you ready Hollywood?

There are some who will say that this penalizes people for being successful – that the more money one makes, the more they will be penalized by paying higher taxes. So what’s the alternative? Having middle class people like me pay more? The wealthy can afford it. I can’t. It seems the more money someone has, the louder they yell when asked to pay their fair share of taxes. Not to mention they are able to avoid paying their fair share by putting their money offshore.
And let’s get our money back from Citigroup. If their hiding money offshore, let them use that money to bail themselves out.

They can pass all the new tax codes they want but if some of Obama’s own cabinet members don’t even feel compelled to pay their own taxes what makes them think other wealthy Americans will?

young conservative:”He has NO right saying ANYTHING to the nation about taxes or unpaid taxes. NOTHING he says is credible. ”
So by your logic, Republicans have NO right to say ANYTHING to the nation about deficit spending, right? Based on their time with combined control of the House, Senate and Whitehouse, NOTHING they say is credible.
Wow, this simplistic with us or against us sloganeering may be useless but it sure is fun!

He wants to take all of our money and give it to homeless black crackwhores and lesbian communist arts communes! We must stand behind Rush Limbaugh and fight the Democrats to the death! We cannot let Obama’s plan to turn us into a black muslim socialist paradise succed! We must fight against the so-called “recovery” at all costs! $5.75 a week in taxes? Where do you get those numbers?
For the record, a 3.6% tax increase for someone making $250,000/year is $9,000. That $9,000 would go to the government on top of the money this citizen is already paying.
That’s not chump change for people making that mount of money. That’s not chump change for the businesses that individual could be spending his/her money at. That’s not chump change for anyone.
Leave it to an arrogant, tax-and-spend liberal to think that it is.

Reaganaut, you hit the nail precisely on the head.
A CEO of a large corporation DOES NOT “work harder” than one of his line workers, yet may be paid as much as 1,000 times the hourly rate. But let the tax man come calling, and that CEO will bewail all the “lazy” people on his payroll who “want something for nothing”. Time for a wake-up call.

Office Goddess:”There are some who will say that this penalizes people for being successful – that the more money one makes, the more they will be penalized by paying higher taxes. So what’s the alternative?”
Not quite the right question. More to the point, look at the penalty. They have to pay an extra $30 for every $1000 they earn. This is not a terrible punishment, this is not the 70% top tax bracket that Reagan railed against and slashed to 50% in his 1981 ERTA (Reagan Tax Cuts – he ultimately got it down to 28% at the end of his term), this is going back to the 39.8% that served the economy well in the 90′s under the Republican Revolution Congress.
A little perspective is useful here.

President Obama says he’s looking at the big picture, not sweating the small stuff.
The stock market is story of like a tracking poll in politics. It bobs up and down day-to-day,“ Obama said. ”And if you spend all your time worrying about that, then you’re probably going to get the long-term strategy wrong.“
Another way to get your long-term strategy wrong is by being clueless and confused about simple economic theory. For example, by garbling the definition of the P/E ratio.
“What you’re now seeing is a profit and earnings ratios get to the point that buying stocks is a good thing if you have a long-term perspective on it,” he said to reporters after meeting in the Oval Office with visiting British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Shouldn’t a President of the US know that “P/E Ratio” means “price-to-earnings ratio,” not “profit and earnings ratio?” There is a difference.
Imagine, if you will, the media reaction if George Bush had made such a basic economic blunder in a time of crisis.

Kilgore Trout, I think you’re missing the point. Geithner didn’t pay until he was forced to- via vetting by Obama people and public outrage. He can try to jusify it til his dying day but the bottom line is he dodged paying taxes as long as he could. That shows a complete lack of ‘patriotism’ (a la Biden) and an utter lack of respect for the very tax system he’s defending, heading up and imposing on the rest of us ‘chattering class’.

Posted by: Oh Please | March 4, 2009, 2:26 pm 2:26 pm

I don’t get it. Republicans want to tax the middle class and the poor, but give tax breaks to the wealthy. That doesn’t make any sense. Don’t they know that if they want to balance the budget they need to tax the people who actually have the most money and who can afford to take the hit?
Republicans just don’t make any sense any more.
If it’s time for class warfare, I’m down with the middle class – let the rich pay their fair share and stop coming after my meager savings. Frankly, I have more in common with a family on the welfare line than I do with some rich, caviar-eating, yacht-riding scumbag like Rush Limbaugh anyway!

For the record, the tax increase proposed is a MARGINAL tax rate increase. That is it applies ONLY to the amount OVER $250k (for joint filers – it’s actually $200k non-head of household filers). So, the additional taxes proposed on your $250k filer is – ZERO DOLLARS.
“That’s not chump change for people making that mount of money.”
You’re right – it’s not chump change, IT’S ZERO.
“Leave it to an arrogant, tax-and-spend liberal to think that it is.”
Leave to a proud member of the Republican Party of Ignorance to not even know what the proposed marginal tax rate increase is.
You only pay that extra 3.6% on the amount OVER $250k you make, not a cent extra on your first $250k ($200k if you have no dependents and are not married).
Lets agree to at least try to base our differing opinions on reality.

Office Goddess:” I’m not an accountant, so I don’t know just how much more someone making $250K will pay. I’m thinking whatever it is, they can afford it.”
It is important to keep the actual numbers in mind, because a truely high tax on the highest wage earners is bad policy. As it stands, those making over $250k will pay ZERO dollars additional. Every $1000 *over* $250k they earn will be subject to about another $30 (maybe $40) in tax. That is a reasonably small additional tax and has been shown historically not to have detrimental effects on their motivation to produce.

Comment by the late Dr.Adrian Rogers
“You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person recieves withouy working for, another person must work without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody, anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend,is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. “

You’re only about 150 years behind – perhaps you should read Democracy in America by Alexis de Tocqueville, who strove to answer the very question of why, after a generation, America had not collapsed due to that exact effect. The Bush tax cuts were a “tax vacation.” When those tax cuts expire in 2010 (as Congress and Bush originally designed them to do) it will not be a tax increase; it’s back to rates we had before. Clearly the tax breaks for America’s wealthiest did not grow enough jobs – only 5 Million were created during the Bush administration and we now have more than 11.6 million people unemployed.

I know the leading theories on why oil prices went so high (and no, Bush does not factor into them beyond his characteristic inaction to address them), and I am very familiar with cap and trade. Cap and trade on energy has the Saudis and other oil producing nations terrified. Passing the true cost of oil through to market will devastate demand for their product and spells the beginning of the end of those thugs punching absurdly above their weight on the global stage.

Sam: Dr. Adrian Rogers (three-times President of the Southern Baptist Convention) might best have considered the scripture he preached before spouting off on wealth and taxes.
Perhaps he would have discovered the 33% “tax rate” specified in the Old Testament. Perhaps he would have remembered the “workfare” system embodied in the practice of gleaning – literally a steep tax on all agricultural production directed to benefit the poor. Perhaps he would have remembered some of the other systems specified in scripture which REQUIRED that the wealthy take care of the poor – and the EXPLICIT statements of the prophets that the captivity of Judah to Babylon was SPECIFICALLY because these requirements HAD NOT BEEN OBSERVED.
I hate to think that Dr. Rogers had left Philadelphia for a comfortable life in Laodicea.

The wealthy in this country arent’t going to lose their money. They will just pay less in salaries or get rid of one of their drivers to make up the difference. The middle class will be hurt because $250K is not that much money in some states with higher living costs. The folks in that bracket should mind paying more taxes because they probably use less city and government services. A lot of them are empty nesters or childless so take a lot less from the government. Either way, we all pay way way way too many taxes. If you sit down and list all the taxes you pay, you would be sick. Then tally what you get for it and you will kill yourself. Seriously though, we need to manage our government better. If we are going to raise taxes, then tell us what the long term benefit of that tax is. Please lets think these things through and stop throwing money at a broken system.

We cannot let Obama’s plan to turn us into a black muslim socialist paradise succed! We must fight against the so-called “recovery” at all costs! Kaye:”jhw539, why should I be forced to pay for your health care, house, food, etc etc, against my will, Sounds a lot like slavery for me.”
You should probably start with the basics – I found Hobbes Leviathan and Rousseau’s On the Social Contract pretty good grounding works. After you understand the basics of human society and the use of government, the Founding Father’s offer an excellent grounding in the modern formulation (being, of course, heavily grounded in the historical theory themselves).
Finally, you should read up on the difference between being considered a piece of property who could be tortured, starved, bred, and separated for your children like an animal, versus having to pay a historically low tax rate if you make over $250k a year.
Once you have a grasp of those basics, I’ll be happy to debate with you.

Why do liberals hate wealth?
Posted by: Kate T
Kate T — Liberals hate wealth (at least the ones that post on here do) because they know they can never be wealthy.
For you see, the liberal (the ones that post) do not know how to be independent thinkers, doers, and achievers. Hence, the reason why the elected Obama.
They want Obama to provide them wealth at everyone elses expense. They cant do it so therefore, they dont like it.
It is up to you and I to provide that wealth to them (through Obama) because they are too stupid to achieve it themselves.
It’s called “Socialism”….

Posted by: Eric | March 4, 2009, 3:07 pm 3:07 pm

KateT the truth is that under Obama, we are spending ourselves into irreversible economic failure- all so he can make things ‘fair’ by redistributing wealth from those who work to those who don’t. When you lose your job, ask your boss why he canned you. Trust me, it won’t because he felt he needed to pay more taxes to make things ‘fair’.

I like how Kate T. thinks that wealthy people made their money “all by themselves” – as if they didn’t benefit directly from our system of government, which guarantees everything from the integrity of our currency to the transportation system that’s vital to almost every business transaction in America to our territorial integrity and the protection of private property.
That’s the problem with Republican extremists – they take what our government provides for granted and forget that those who benefit most from our system are obliged to give more back.
And then these delusion idiots turn around and claim that the rest of us are “Socialists” and that we “hate wealth” simply because we point out what’s right.

Now, the dummy democrats do not understand this because in their dummy brains, they want to take the short road to victory. Meaning, they elected Obama to save them.

Pay nearly no FEDERAL INCOME TAXES. Please try to stick to reality. The bottom 75% pay plenty in sales taxes, social security, medicare, property taxes, gas taxes, etc.

We should all listen to Tim Geithner. He’s an expert on taxes. ;)

Wrong Noxos!!!!! Very wrong!!!!
What was Bush’s approval rating?
That’s right, us conservatives didn’t approve and it showed. So knock it off with the blanket statements! We were not happy about their spending. I got his approval rating to back up my claims, what do you got? Seems you are the partisan hack.

Posted by: Angie | March 4, 2009, 3:28 pm 3:28 pm

For those so wrapped up in Geithner’s tax issues, let’s set one or two things straight.
First, Geithner’s tax errors WERE NOT discovered by the IRS: it appears they were discovered during screening and independent auditing by him or by the administration and related to his nomination, and were brought to the attention of the IRS – along with a check for the amount owed – by Geithner himself.
Second, the errors Geithner made were apparently so common among current and former U.S.-based employees of foreign embassies, missions and other international groups that by early 2007 the IRS had already established a formal procedure for tax-settlement or “amnesty” for those who discovered that they had made the error and brought it to the attention of the IRS.
I wonder how many of you “conservatives” lambasting Geithner so furiously have ever written a letter to the IRS, stating, “Sirs: I have discovered that I made a big mistake on my tax return a few years ago. Here is an explanation of the error I discovered, and a check for what I should have paid back then. Please accept my apologies for this error and advise what additional amounts I may owe in interest and penalties, which I will pay forthwith. Thank you.”
I’ll wager no even one.

I’m a Republican and I support a tax on the wealthy – because I’m also middle class and am tired of having the Federal budget balanced on my shoulders. Sorry, fellow Republicans, but it’s time to vote with your pocketbook, not your ideology. I think the rich have been using us as suckers to carry their water for far too long. They can afford it, so let them take the hit – it’s not going to slow down business or stop investment in any significant way, despite what our leaders keep telling us. It’s time to get beyond partisan namecalling and actually fix this mess we’re in, and I don’t care if it’s a democrat, republican or whig who fixes it!

YOUNG CONSERVATIVE — Yes, I can tell you what we Conseratives stand for. As far as seeing it in action, all you have to do is look around. If you are in school, just listen to your liberal teachers and professors.
If you watch the news, just look at the blatant liberalism lacky reporting.
Here is what we stand for:
Conservatism:
An ideological base instilled in us by the principles set forth by the Holy Bible, the United States Constitution, family tradition, common sense, and hard work that guides individuals to set a foundation for themselves, their families, and others by abiding to certain rules, regulations and to support, strive and accomplish the vision of a stable and secure society instilled by those principles.
Conservatives believe in black and white truth, absolute wrong versus absolute right, absolute good versus absolute evil. We support the traditional foundations of the United States while recognizing the values of supporting the democratic base of the nation, and their allies abroad. National, as well as global security is recognized as being of the utmost importance for those stable societies to continue.
The heavenly father, a secure nation, the US Constitution, family values, hard work, recognizing truth versus untruth and common sense are all character traits of a good conservative.

As usual, the totally uninformed populus of America is fixated on taxing the rich. Read the whole tax “plan”. Obama also wants higher taxes on busineses. The purpose of most businesses is to make a fair profit on the goods they sell. If they have to pay higher taxes on there income, to meet the bottom line for their goods sold they have 2 choices, lay of workers or increase prices. At the end of the day WE pay their taxes by way of having to pay more for their goods. Is that really that hard to understand? If you aren’t one of the rich, sorry for you, but when you have to pay more for everything you will be poorer than you think you are today.

Remember back in November the media swooning over his application. Those questions that his cabinet et al had to answer to avoid any and all corruption.

it’s ridiculous that in a capitalist system, the goverment is striving to equalize everyone. What is the incentive to work? People that make more money are more educated and work harder. Many of the Fortune 500 companies are not registered in the US at all, but rather as multinational corporations out of the Cayman Islands or other countries with far more lenient tax liabilities. The others are cast as Delaware corporations with minimal tax burdens. Is our Treasury Secretary suggesting that such firms will promptly relocate their headquarters to higher-taxed areas stateside in order to pay their ‘fair share’ of our massive deficit spending? That almost sounds as if Mr. Geithner believes Wall Street works for the White House, instead of the other way around. I predict such a move will not happen in our lifetimes, nor that of our children.

Posted by: h5mind | March 4, 2009, 3:36 pm 3:36 pm

The US pays the highest corporate taxes i the world; I believe almost 50% more than the declining average.

Posted by: deanbob | March 4, 2009, 3:36 pm 3:36 pm

Important to remember – a family making 250,000 a year will see NO TAX INCREASE AT ALL. A family making 260,00 a year will pay an extra 3 – 4%, oh hell, let’s call it 5% on the $10,000. That’s $500 a year, less than $10 a week. At the %3 value, it’s less than $6 a week.
I’m not sure if this is before or after adjustments, so I’m not sure if the statement “Making 260,00 a year” is really accurate. Gross take home pay may be a lot more than that.
And, did you all know that many of the jillionaires on Wall Street make most of their money on capital gains? So, these jillionaires have been paying tax at a rate of 15%.
And, I’m not sure I’m a lib – I certainly believe in progressive taxation, but I’m conservative on a lot of other issues – and I think a lot of us are. Rush Limbaugh and his followers would like everyone to think that you are either an arch-conservative in his club, or a flaming pink disgusting liberal bleeding heart do-good non-patriotic worm-turd, but the reality is that most folks are moderate. (I think maybe there’s a stronger word than “conservative” for that way Limbaugh behaves). It makes me and a lot of people like me mad as hell that we are in the position that we are in, but I do agree that at times like these, Government is the only entity that can get things moving again – I agree with Abraham Lincoln’s analogy of a stopped train, and Government being the only force that can get the wheels to turn the first circle.
Before you start screaming about socialism, the death of America at the hands of the Libs, remember which and whose policies got us into this mess – it weren’t the Democrats whose were in charge of policy for 6 years before things started falling apart in April 2007, it was someone else.

This is repulsive but, worse, it is not good for the country. America has been a beacon because it had a strong middle class. That isn’t true anymore. Why are we quoting Bunning in any article? He’s the joke of the republican’s at the moment. Guys – currently business will place all of their jobs where they can get the cheapest labor. Period. So I doubt this will hurt them much.

The big fallacy that Republicans promote is that everyone making over $250,000 or more got there because of “hard work”. I bet I work just as hard as most of them and make half as much. While “hard work” may have attributed “luck” and “being in the right place at the right time” or choosing a profession that pays scads of money, attributed just as much. So, my feeling is this….those who make more should pay more…Very simple concept…

Going back to the tax rates of the 90′s is not equalizing everyone. Get a grip, a formerly billion dollar bonus is not going to be turned down because now it’s only 997 million dollars.
This tax rate is barely HALF what it was when Reagan was elected. HALF.

jhw539 I know the leading theories on why oil prices went so high (and no, Bush does not factor into them beyond his characteristic inaction to address them), and I am very familiar with cap and trade. Cap and trade on energy has the Saudis and other oil producing nations terrified. Passing the true cost of oil through to market will devastate demand for their product and spells the beginning of the end of those thugs punching absurdly above their weight on the global stage.
You are dreaming if you think that taxing oil to the point it makes alternative fuels viable has anyone worried except business in this country. Let’s see here, I am going to make my production cost go up so I can scare every other country???? What kind of plan is that???

For a family making between 50,000 – 74,000 you received a 931.00 tax cut under Bush.
That means after January 2010 your OBAMA tax cut, plus the expiration of the Bush tax cut will equal $931.00(Bush) – $390.00(Obama) = -$541.00 . So under Obama you will lose 541.00. OR a car payment, a daycare payment, a heating bill, etc, etc. You lose under Obama no matter what.

cjr, Obama is increasing taxes on everyone. His plan to hike energy taxes, cap and trade, will raise everyones energy costs. His plan to raise taxes on small businesses earning over 250,000 will increase the cost of goods and services and result in more job lossess. His big deficits and spending will result in everyone owing more money on the deficit which will bankrupt America.

If there is 1 thing we loathe in current America its achievement. It makes us look bad.
Do you 250K-haters not have a calculator?

When those with “big money” have their already high taxes increased more (for government greed) they will simply buy a house in Europe to avoid paying all US income taxes, just like the wealthy entertainers do now. A bigger problem I see on the horizon is when the US Government decides it’s going to increase corporate and business taxes. That will set the stage for corporations moving their headquarters overseas as well. American corporations now pay more taxes in the US than any other country around the world. I appears the cesspool US Congress (both democrats & republicans) just can’t see the destruction the do to our economy with their grotesque tax rules and policies. Capitalism will die a slow death because of government constantly draining or sucking funds from the private sector for their own purposes.

Geithner is a CROOK.
Nothing was more nauseating than watching him get sworn in as Treasury Secretary, saying, “I promise to uphold the law…blah, blah, blah…”
All I could think was: You’re a CRIMINAL. A TAX CHEATER. You have NO BUSINESS overseeing and procuring money that legitimate businesses and individuals made from the sweat of their brows.
We have a TAX CHEATING CRIMINAL as Secretary of the Treasury.
But I guess it doesn’t matter, since a CRIMINAL RACKETEER is our president.

Posted by: Andy | March 4, 2009, 3:54 pm 3:54 pm

Go to IRS.gov… look under 1040tt.pdf (the current tax tables):
I will approximate the tax code (because, it is not a simple math kind of thing..)
$250,000 (individual)in 2008 pays $61,229 in taxes (that leaves $188,771 in income or $15,730 per month — they can probably eat and be clothed and housed just fine).
Simply adding 3.6% to that amount… call it $9000 as someone posted above… (and it REALLY is not that simple… I agree, just approximate numbers here)
You get a tax payment of $70,229 (leaving $179,771 or $14,980 per month to spend — still plenty for food, clothing and a house … maybe even a new car!)
The point I am making is that letting tax cuts expire — please read that again — not RAISING taxes per se, but letting tax cuts EXPIRE ONLY on the wealthiest segment of US society — this is not reason to fear some sort of grave situation. Also important — these tax cuts do not expire until 2011.. that is two years away, leaving plenty of time to plan ahead.
PS — if the economy isn’t in better shape by 2011… well, then we are ALL is a mess o’ trouble. That means the whole world, by the way. This current situation isn’t just the USA — it is world wide, in case you don’t choose to read facts.

Posted by: Richard | March 4, 2009, 3:58 pm 3:58 pm

My wife and I will make about $275K this year (don’t know about 2011 when the higher rates are scheduled to kick in). While I don’t want to pay higher taxes I am even more opposed to the runaway federal deficits this country seems to be addicted to. Bushie Junior’s plan to get elected again in ’04 was to reduce the tax on the rich, crank up spending (icluding on his unnecessary war in Iraq) and just run up the deficit. Unless this country does something meaningful to eliminate the federal budget deficits it will collpase financially under the weight of them. All we will be doing is paying the interest on the federal debt.

Posted by: Chuck Wavy Dean | March 4, 2009, 4:00 pm 4:00 pm

Richard: WHY? Because Geithner brought his own tax error to the attention of the IRS by correcting it and paying it… and you did not?

Posted by: Jordan | March 4, 2009, 4:01 pm 4:01 pm

Get Real: You miss the whole point. It is amazing how many of the rich DO NOT contribute back into the system they are fighting so hard to fight against. Greed seems to be the mantra of many of the conservatives out there. It is amazing how many of these greedy individuals and corporations scream for more and more tax breaks and less oversight so they can ship our jobs and production overseas to help them make more money and than play with all the bonuses that they were rewarded for doing just that. Enough is enough. It is time to put checks and balances back into the system to protect us all and help our nation grow again. You are a fool to believe that these ultra-conservative neo-cons care one small bit about your needs or anyone but themselves. That is what makes them the hard-hearted and soulless beings that they are. I hope that you are not part of that crowd but your obvious expressed support of this greedy philosophy makes me doubt so.

You can always depend on Republicans to be for the wealthy. They don’t like social programs for the masses, they don’t like stimulous for the working families even if it has oversight and accountibility, but they do think bailouts are OK for Wall Street or banking as long as there is no oversight and no accountability. According to a WSJ article, the IMF and World Bank reimburse employees, including US citizens, for US income taxes. So while Geithner was being fully reimbursed for his income taxes, he STILL tried to cheat the tax payers he now respresents by trying to deduct his kid’s overnight camps. If anybody has ever looked at the instructions for dependent-care tax deductions, it clearly states that overnight camps are not allowed. If he’s not a crook, he’s stupid.

Posted by: FreeinNH | March 4, 2009, 4:08 pm 4:08 pm

Chuck Wavy Dean: is that $275K your gross income, or your net taxable income after all deductions and exemptions? It is the NET taxable income that will determine whether you have to pay more, not the gross.
And by the way… for married couples, isn’t the threshold DOUBLE? Maybe someone on here would know that. If you and your wife both work, and you file separately, you should almost certainly EACH observe the $250K threshold. (Otherwise, the threshold for singles would have to be $125K, and I have never heard that value mentioned.
Anybody out there have the answer on this? Thanks.

“Property is the fruit of labor…property is desirable…is a positive good in the world. That some should be rich shows that others may become rich, and hence is just encouragement to industry and enterprise. Let not him who is houseless pull down the house of another; but let him labor diligently and build one for himself, thus by example assuring that his own shall be safe from violence when built.” – Abraham Lincoln
If Obama wants to be like Lincoln, then BE LIKE HIM. There isn’t enough money to cover his deficit spending even if he took 100% OF THE EARNINGS from the top 5% “richest” people. This is a false argument – pitting us against one another. Don’t be fooled – he’ll be coming after ALL of us soon.

Businesses are not out to employ people, or feed and clothe you, live by moral principles, or see that the world is full of butterflies and happy songs.
They are in the business of MAKING MONEY. TURNING PROFITS.
And thank God that they are, because in the process, they provide jobs for you and me, goods and services for everyone to utilize, and a tax base for our usurping government. And they do it as ccheaply, quickly and efficiently as they can.
What ELSE are businesses for? Can you enlighten me?

It really doesn’t matter what Geithner’s taxes looked like – whether he screwed them up or deliberately didn’t pay some of them. Its not the issue.
The issue (it would seem) is that the Republicans finally found someone they have empathy for – the people who make over $250,000.00 per year!
G.W. Bush must have had empathy for them because he cut their taxes. Now Obama wants to let that tax cut run out because our new President is foolishly more concerned about the middle class and poor in the country than the much maligned persecuted wealthy. Nobody understands how terrible it must be to be THEM.

While other Federal taxes could be brought into this debate (IF they are affected by the expiration of the tax cuts or are planned to be changed by the federal government) — state taxes have NOTHING to do with the debate we are having here.
The Federal government (President+Cabinet and Congress, etc.) has nothing to do with what states levy in taxes.

Flat tax and term limits at EVERY level of government (local, state and national). In fact, forget the flat tax. I’d rather have a national sales tax of 15% with NO exemptions – not even for non-profits. Get rid of the IRS and State Revenue agencies. Get rid of the entire income tax industry (tax accountants, tax attorneys, tax courts, etc…) That should be a pretty big savings to the federal and state budgets.

-Because government takes more and more of my hard-earned money and I see less and less of a return on it.
-Because government does not encourage or inspire individuals to be the best that they can be.
-Because government rewards lazy, irresponsible behavior and penalizes success.

Dear BlofeldBuildings,
I do listen to Rush Limbaugh occasionally. I listened to him during the time that he was pressing for the government to interfere in the Terri Sciavo case – remember that? Talk about government getting involved… I also listened to him when he said that Michael Fox was purposefully not taking his meds so that he would appear shakier during some political commercials – remember that? I think Rush Limbaugh is VERY good at what he does – he’s an entertainer, and a critic. I think he should live up to his own standards ( he can’t ) and should run for political office and put his money where his mouth is ( he won’
t ).
As far as my love for government, I don’t – but as long as we have to have one, and we do, it should be a good one. I like the way government works here in New Hampshire, but it’s a very small state. It doesn’t seem to work very well at all in California, but I love Schartzenegger and think that the Constitution should be changed so that he can run for President – and I really mean that – I have enormous respect for the guy.
As for what Government has done for me – they built the roads that I drive on. They do research on diseases to keep my kids from dying early. Medicare helped my Dad stay alive after he had 2 strokes as a result of a misdiagnosis last year. I can go to a library to learn, and a park to relax. I can take my kids to a beach in the summer. If my house catches on fire I don’t have to have an iron insurance emblem on my barn to get it put out. They were supposed to be watching the banks so that people with access that I could never get couldn’t bet money that housing prices would go up forever, but they failed in that regard.
They keep land free for the people (thank you Teddy R.), and protect animal species from being wiped out. Because of government, the rivers in Ohio aren’t burning anymore, and I can swim in the Merrimack without getting a tetanus shot afterward. Because of government I can take my kids fishing in a stream, and then eat the fish because government stopped the paaper mills from disgorging chemicals into that stream.
And, because of government, on July 20, 1969, I got to watch an American step foot on the moon.
Should I go on?

People working the system need to be punished. World pressure should be put on the Swiss and Cayman banks because they are nothing but boring pirates. Communism’s flaw was the corruption and after incompetant and corrupt leaders took away the checks and balances introduced by the forefathers, democracy flails.

Listen, we elected a president with a strong majority of the vote. He has
announced we need “to move boldly, decisively, and quickly…” Yes he is in
position to raise taxes, perhaps 4 times over the next three years. Yes, he
could give us the largest tax increase since WWII. And while he may agree
that corporations are, indeed, the engine that drives our economy he may
decide to raised corporate taxes by $120 billion over five years and closed
corporate tax loopholes worth about $300 billion over that same period. And
yes, while many think the federal government should back out, he may
increase the federal government by 68% and, in doing so increase the debt by
almost $2 trillion.
Yes, he may do all those things. But hey, it may work. It did for the
Conservative Republican God Ronald Reagan. Tax and spend – it’s the
Republican way!!

Eric,
Just finished your description of conservatism. Mostly social conservativism, as compared to political and fiscal conservatism. The description’s binary qualities, however, cry out for definition. “Certain rules”, “absolute wrong/right/good/evil”, “truth”, “untruth”, “traditional foundations”. Whose rules? Who gets to decide what is absolutely true or right? What are the traditions that are so cherished? The essential problem with mixing these sorts of ideas (while you may think they are ideals, they are simply ideas)with politics is that politicians have influence. Stick with political conservatism (ala Goldwater and Reagan)and fiscal conservatism (ala Bush #1). The social conservatism landscape is dotted with quicksand and booby traps.

As the non-profit’s headquarters, their home could be exempt from paying property taxes. How many people that Obama has nominated for this position that withdrew their names because of back tax issues???

dlboggan says: “If you think that a soulless corporation or company is more important than the needs of a person than you are truly a lost soul.”
Well then color me soulless, because it’s not my business what a person’s “needs” are. That is up to them.
Define “needs”, please.
If all the businesses that are currently operating went into business because they cared about human “needs”, there would be no businesses around today to take care of your “needs”. They would have gone OUT of business before YOU were born, dlboggan. Humanity would be sitting around on grassy knolls, naked and crying, in “need” of food, shelter, medical attention and a TV on which to watch “American Idol”.
I’ll say it again: Thank GOD for business, thank GOD for their success, and thank GOD we still have a free country that honors that success.
At least for now….

Who’s rules? Why, they are without a doubt, the Conservative rules.
I have been blogging for many years on numerous website. I pay attention not only to the responses, but the news, the foundations of principles, the bible, society as a whole, and to various discussion groups, etc….
I’m an educated and well informed individual. I’ve lived 42 years now and from the political landscape of things, I tend to delve myself into the fray, as it were…..
In saying that, it doesnt matter what you think from what perspective I describe “Conservatism”, because I know I am correct. And, the majority of the country would tend to agree with me.
Now, you may come back and say, “Then why did we vote for a Democrat for President”?
I answer that, as I did in an earlier post, that most people of this country are “Politcally STUPID”…..

But, I’m not sure a National Sales Tax is the answer… especially not NOW in a time when we need to encourage confidence in the economy so people will spend, so people can produce, so people can have jobs, so people can spend…and so it goes into a stronger economy.

Tax hikes and over 9,000 earmarks and about 8 billion but that probably not all of them. So much for change Obama. The change is only that the Dem control Congress and not now the White House. They will eye the Supreme Court for total control. They attack anyone who questions now Cramer, Limbaugh. You may not like Limbaugh but if they are able to silent his voice they are able to silent ANYONE. Last week Sen Gregg came under attack for something that many people in Congress do and is legal but tar and feather all who the White House deem enemies. Here comes the 70′s and Nixon’s enemy list they can deny it like Nixon and his supporter but the truth will come out even if the main media is in the tank with Obama. For those of you that think a corporation or a company is more important than a single human being than you need to look in the mirror and tell yourself how worthless you are in regards to that corporations policies and decisions about your future and your place on this Earth. Explain to yourself that these companies, created and managed by fellow human being but controlled by the inhuman policies and guidelines that human lawyers and corporate human officers put into place during that companies creation is so much better and more important then you paltry existence. If that is your mantra, than enjoy it until that very company throws you away or another company takes your company down destroys the freedoms you enjoy as an American due to a companies policies steal that freedom when you walk onto its properties. There is greed, envy, cronyism, and sellouts that happen in both parties.
Where I dissasociate myself from those two, are that I believe my core principles are the best for the country.
Not liberalism. Take away the corruption and if we had a society that was just and fair (liberlism vs Conservatism), liberalism does not fair too well in my book. I have proof to back that up (as I laid out in an earlier post with certain liberal cities that I cited)….

You are so far out there on the extreme that it is probably best that you should be ignored for the betterment of all, including yourself. I suggest that you seek out some very qualified counseling to make sure you don’t do what your post name implies.

camp50: While those people do exist, they are the exception to the rule. I am a product of welfare. I had federal PELL grants to fund my college education, my husband had is college loans paid off by enlisting in the military, and while serving his country, we qualified for and received WIC. Now, we are taxpaying, productive members of society. We would not be where we are today without the little help from the government.
I think the reality is that most conservitives and/or Republicans miss is that without a little safety net for people with nothing, we would have civil unrest. People would torch cars, steal from businesses and much worse. I’m willing to pay a little extra in taxes to ensure that doesn’t happen.

CAMP50 — You’ve just cited (appropriately I might add) just a few example of how people are “Politically STUPID”.
The liberals (and I dont know if you are one) do not want to hear this argument. They are under the false assumption that everyone is quite in tune with how the govt works, operates, and all the shady deals that go on behind closed doors to manipulate the public.
This is sad. It truly is.

There you say “most Americans ARE politically stupid”
My stance is simply that MOST Americans do not agree with you (according to what you have posted here, clear and easy to read).
I have not made a statement regarding the intelligence of the American electorate, but I will: With the advent of the internet, among other avenues of readily available information, more Americans are active in and well informed regarding the political process.

For those that say it is only going to be the rich who get taxed, they are woefully misinformed. Remember a few months ago when gas was over $4.00 a gallon? Well, Obama has proposed an energy tax that will tax gasoline, electricity, home heating oil, etc. This tax will be placed on anything that is transported, imports and exports, etc. This tax will affect everyone because we all use energy and we all buy products. Also, he proposes higher taxes for cigarettes. I am not a smoker but there are figures out there that smokers are disproportionate in the lower socio economic sector so he is taxing middle and lower class families as well as creating more taxes for the wealthy in addition to the tax rates.
I heard a report this morning that Obama has already spent more in his less than two months in office than Bush did in his first seven years in office. Just like most families are doing right now by tightening their belts, it is time for the president to lead by example and not spend money that we do not have and that is not his.

Sorry, but Republicans are the new radicals – you need to update your calendar. It’s no longer “greasy hippies” throwing bombs now – it’s wackadoo Republicans who want to “drown the government in a bathtub”.
Sorry, pal, but we libs ARE the establishment now, we’ve settled down and become invested in this country – it’s you con nutjobs who want to tear everything down just to prove a point.

They say educate youself to get ahead but don’t like paying the taxes to help make education possible. Again, greed and selfishness at best. And by the way, Jesus was not Republican or Democrat, he was the Son of God that loves all of his children. Do you love all of Gods children or do you think they require to prove themselves to acquire your love?

CJS569 — Thanks. I’ve always had a good life. You wanna know why? Because I’ve never relied on anyone to make it so.
I’ve always relied on myself. I learned from an early age that you can not rely on another human being for your existence.
This is not to say that you cant rely on your family, friends, aquaintences, etc….
What I’m saying is that from a political perspective, you are doomed if you feel compelled to rely on someone (such as Obama) to make your life better.
This is simply called: A fools choice…
Remember, most Americans are “Politically Stupid”…hence, the reason why Obama was elected…

His statement can just as easily suggest that his secretary pays too much tax.
Nothing stops anyone who feels he doesn’t pay his :fair share” from writing a check. I know for fact that the IRS will take it.

DASSIS — When you get back, ponder this thought.
Most (and I mean 90 percent) of the media, the internet, and other outlets are being reported from the liberal point of view.
Therefore, I classify most Americans as “Political Pied Pipers” that follow anyone and anything anyone will tell them to.
This is a fact. Not only that, but a lot of Americans (half according to the exit polls that voted) have no clue of how their govt works.
I can give you many examples of how “Politcally STUPID” most Americans are.
There are many reasons for this:
Time: Most Americans care not about politics up until the time they vote. How informed do you think they are?
Class: Most Americans think it is a good idea to take care of the poor. How much do they give? When someone says t hat they will take care of the poor, do you think they will vote for them>
Race: Outside of the guilty white people that voted for Obama, why is it that 90 percent of blacks vote Democrat whereas no other ethnicity shares that same percentage of voting for Republican vs Democrat?
The GULLIBLE: How many of the voting class, do you think that actually thought Obama was going to make their life better by voting for him?

The Head of the IRS aka “Turbo Tax Tim” did not notify the IRS of his tax problem. The IRS routinely cross checks the income amounts reported by a taxpayer against the amounts recorded by his employer on the appropriate Forms W-2,1099 etc. If the amounts do not coincide the IRS sends the taxpayer a notice of a potential additional tax asessment. They sent this notice to “Turbo Tax Tim” and he agreed to pay the bill less the penalty that most of us would be forced to pay. He also failed to inform the IRS at that time that he did not pay his taxes on the same income item for 2 previous years. He finally paid up only after he was nominated by Obama for Sec. of Treas. I don’t know about you but as a taxpayer I am disgusted by his actions and do not believe that he should be leading an agency that enforces the tax laws. The people who are giving him a pass either do not understand how the tax system works or probably are not paying their fair share of taxes.

I don’t think people should be criminalized for owing taxes. What I don’t like is how some (like Geithner) can ignore the IRS until he needs to get confirmed for a job. I owed the feds about $800 and I knew I owed it to them. I wrote to them about a payment plan. They contacted me and I paid off my debt. It is arrogant of someone to owe the govt 40K and not take any action to pay until it is made public and his job is on the line. He knew he owed the IRS–just like I knew I owed the IRS. I contacted the IRS and made arrangements to pay–but for his becoming Treasury Secretary, he would still owe back taxes to the IRS.

The further we climb, the more money Obama will take from us. So, why do it?
For me, I’m strapped because I have 3 kids to support. One of mine just turned 18. I’m just waiting for the other two so I dont have to pay my ex anymore child support.
Then, I’m getting out of the high paying job that I’m in now, and working at 7-11 (well, maybe that’s a stretch)….

Outside of the fact that taxes are going to raise on families that make 250K or more, dummy Obama states (as he has during his campaign, and now in office) that the middle class is going to get a “Tax Cut”.
Tax Cut? How so? If dummy Obama taxes the rich, do you think they are just going to suck up that loss? No. They are going to pass those taxes increases onto the public.
Simply meaning, when dummy Obama taxes the rich, the price of yours, and my goods are going to increase.
So, where’s the tax cut?

“…the price of yours, and my goods are going to increase.”
In a market economy, some smart person will decide that his “increase” need not be quite so much others’ and will bring him a greater market share. Competitive pressures will help control prices – as also will some promised Congressional probing (but that will not be the primary control.)

bob – your pov that “the wealthy have been taking down this country down too long” is interesting. don’t you think someone who is poor and who has eight kids and clogs the school system and the hospitals is doing a much better job taking the country down. how is someone who is contributing and paying taxes more guilty of “taking this country down” than someone who contributes nothing and takes from cradle to grave. have you been to california? do you know what economic state it’s in? people who can’t or won’t take care of themselves – but who are able – are the ones who contribute far more to the economic stress of local governments. as politically incorrect and inconvenient that truth is.

So when we tax the investment banker who is hauling in $1,000,000 the cost of my checking account will go up – interesting. And don’t use the 5% of small businesses that will be effected – remember, a small business needs to be hauling it to top $250,000.
So the issue is…what should the corporate rate be? Good question, with many answers all impacted by if we can reenaged the sale of goods oversees.
That said, if we stand that we can not raise the corporate tax rate because the costs of goods will go up and the consumer will pay more…isn’t that a slap at the open market? In fact isn’t that bad mouthing the whole idea of capitalism? And in fact the whole ideals of our country? While I personally have no problem paying a higher rate on the income my wife and I make in excess of $250K (it won’t be all that much but we will still feel the difference), at the same time I would like to see some REAL reform in the way my tax dollars are spent. I don’t want it to go for a bunch of ridiculous earmarks; I don’t want it to go to people like Octomom who crank out extra children to qualify for more federal aid; I have no problem with it going to people who through no fault of their own need assistance. I would like to see more charitable giving like the type that Warren Buffet + Bill & Melinda Gates are doing — people who are incredibly well off giving to people who have been less fortunate. My wife and I donate to MEND — it is a good cause.

No American should be forced to turn over 40% of their income to the Federal govt nor should the govt be able to take by force over 50% of a citizens income when you include state and city taxes. Why is it always democRATS who did not educate themselves who want to steal from those that did?

Eric: “Simply answer the question that I proposed.”
I have not found any URL you posted here. They do filter those out pretty fast, however… unless it points to one of their own.
Federal income tax is based on NET income, not gross or even adjusted gross (except for Alt. Min. Tax.) So if you earn 275K but have $26K in various deductions, you do not meet the $250K bar.
Beyond that, I do not know what you are asking.

No one wants to stop people from being successful but is it fair for them to hide their income offshore in order to save from paying taxes. It is a shame when a secretary pays more taxes than her boss. I think it is o.k. to tax these people more and it will not happen until may 2012. That will give them some time to squirrel away more money. I’m all for it.

Brad: 10% will not run our federal government: it would not even run the military. Typically, somewhere around 30-40% is required to pay for basic infrastructure and defense alone – NOT counting actual war.
If you are plucking 10% out of the bible (Old Testament) you should be aware that it specifies several different tithes, some of which were collected only in certain years. The sum of all the tithes listed in scripture, adjusted to annual average, is 33%.

2) the proposed rates are nowhere near highest historical rates
3)from each according to their ability (unless they are treasury secretary)
4)in a few years, we will approach $20trillion in debt … the future rates that will be required for debt service will make these look cheap.

To set the record straight:
Geithner failed to pay $40000 in taxes from 2001 to 2004. During this period he worked for the IMF where he failed
to pay self-employment taxes on his income. After an audit by the IRS in 2006, Geithner paid the self-employment taxes and interest from 2003 and 2004. The IRS waived penalties for those tax years. At this time he did not advise the IRS that he also did not pay the SE taxes on the income he earned from 2001 and 2002. Geithner only paid back the past-due taxes from 2001 and 2002 because he knew he was going to be nominated for Sec of Treas. As one can see this was not a common error but a consciemce avoidance of his tax responsibility. Our tax system is based on voluntary compliance and we all pay for the those who cheat the system.

Steve, sweetheart. Have you done the math? Spending will not be covered by their tax increases as they are promising. They also assumed that the economy would improve much more than the even the most positive consensuses. Obama is a marxist—-marxist economies don’t do well and never recover…. The numbers Geither and Obama are pimping don’t add up for one. Two, the increases they are pushing like the Cap and Trade alone will increase everyone’s electric bill by 40% minimum. Then you have the charity and mortgage deductions that will hurt most that are actually you know paying their mortgaghes. Obama has all sorts of hidden taxes to harm everyone. And then you have the other bad bad issue—-Obama’s scams and waste of money harm the hell out of economies and is more than enough to cause the rich who pay most of our bils to leave the country to save their income from being taxed. (Obama doesn’t like mention that when our tax rate was higher, this is exactly what the rich didn’t pay taxes here.) Oh, and btw The US already has the highest tax rate on businesses.

This should be telling you kool aid drinkers that Obama doesn’t care about making the rich pay taxes————as must marxist/socialist don’t. The rich wiggle out of paying taxes, while the working class is stuck paying more and more taxes to support the uber rich crooks at the top and give out left overs to the USEFUL IDIOTS at the bottom looking for the government nanny state.

America’s middle class is hurting. Trillions of dollars in home equity and retirement savings and college savings are gone. And every day, more and more Americans are losing their jobs.
_
For the backbone of America, it’s insult on top of injury. Over the course of America’s last economic expansion, the middle class participated in very few of the benefits. But now in the midst of this historic economic downturn, the middle class sure is participating in all of the pain. Something is seriously wrong when the economic engine of this nation – the great middle class – is treated this way.
President Obama and I are determined to change this. Quite simply, a strong middle class equals a strong America. We can’t have one without the other.
_
To build an inclusive society, Congress must structure the tax system to do the greatest amount of good for the largest number of people, not just big business and the super wealthy. Sooner or later, we have to clean up from the economic decisions of the past eight years. That’s a burden that should be borne by business as well as individuals.
_
Tax all income the same whether it is made in China, London, or New York. Corporations are not taxed on foreign profits until it is brought back into the United States therefore, companies reinvest money and build plants off shore to delay or avoid paying taxes.
_
Then repeal the dollar for dollar tax credit for foreign taxes paid. The U.S. taxpayer should not be subsidizing companies to move jobs to foreign countries.

Posted by: Bruce Barnes | March 5, 2009, 1:08 am 1:08 am

Since the National Taxpayer Protection Pledge was started in 1986, the marginal income tax rate has declined from 50 to 35 percent for individuals and from 51 to 39 percent for corporations. This has exacerbated the growing inequality of income and wealth to the point that the wealthiest 1 percent has more wealth than the bottom 95 %. Only the wealthy have benefited from these tax breaks and in the process we also take from the many to enrich the few.
The federal government has been authorized in the constitution to collect revenue to pay government expenses. When taxpayers are allowed to keep that revenue through tax breaks, tax credits, loopholes, right-offs, and unpaid fines or royalties it is the equivalent to government spending. The Republican tax cuts for big business and the wealthy has pushed government spending over the top to a record.
According to the “Budget of the United States Government, Historical Tables, FY 2006.” In 1953 the Corporate Income Tax as a Share of GDP was 6 % and in 2004 it was down to 1.3 %. A study by the Government Accountability Office said that two-thirds of U.S. corporations paid no federal income taxes, and about 68 percent of foreign companies doing business in the U.S. avoided paying corporate taxes between 1998 and 2005.
Most of the loopholes and tax dodges that corporations use to slash their taxes may be technically ‘legal’ in the sense that the tax law allows them. But remember that these subsidies got into the tax code because corporations lobbied to put them there. Saying something is ‘legal’ doesn’t mean that it’s right. Since most of the top executives of the companies with revenues over $250 million are millionaires, the top 1% of the population either have or control over 65 % of the wealth of the USA. Alan Greenspan has said that too few people own too much of the wealth.
According to “Effective Tax Rates for Taxpayers with the Top 400 Adjusted Gross Income”
http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/taxfacts/displayafact.cfm
When we look at the effective tax rates for the top 400 we find the number of top 400 taxpayers paying less than 20 % was: 1995 – 25; 2000 – 136; and in 2005 – 255. The number of top 400 taxpayers paying less than 15 % was: 1995 – 12; 2000 – 40; 2005 – 144. This is much less than the average middle class worker. Over half of the top 400 taxpayers pay less than 20 percent and over a third pay less than 15 percent. Part of good citizenship is paying one’s fair share of the cost of running the country. Because successive GOP administrations have promoted the culture of the rich freeloader, the refusal of folks such as Warren Buffet to freeload was greeted with shock. (Buffet pointed out that the tax laws allow him to pay less tax than his secretary; an example of correctable inequity.)
The United States is the most economically stratified society in the western world. As THE WALL STREET JOURNAL reported, a recent study found that the top .01% or 14,000 American families hold 22.2% of wealth — the bottom 90%, or over 133 million families, just 4% of the nation’s wealth. Steve Fraser said on Bill Moyers Journal said that the 50 top hedge fund managers had accumulated 29 billion dollars in 2007. That is an average of more than $500 million each.
Republican representatives have deceived the general public, who must pay higher taxes, lose public services, or are responsible for big future debt burdens. The national debt has doubled in the last seven years to $10.7 trillion and will add another $0.5 trillion this year. Our infrastructure is in disrepair, New York had a sinkhole, bridges fall down, levees break, and many parts of the country are running out of water.

The comment “death to democrats” is really troubling. Along with “I want him to fail”, what is wrong with you people?
Get your head out of the sand, we are all in this mess together. Anyone hoping for this administration policies to fail in my opinion is simply UnAmerican. This country went through 8 years of Bush telling people, that if they didn’t support the war they were UnAmerican, does it sound any different?
This partisan bickering only serves to divide the country when she really needs you. The division between democrats and republicans is becoming more like the racial divide that hampered social reconciliation in this country for over 150 years. “A house divided against itself will not stand”, rings more true today than ever before.

Sure the wealthier are complaining…it is the first time anyone got after them for all their tax breaks and loopholes to get out of paying their fair share of the taxes. I know some people of wealth and they are the first to look for ways to not pay taxes. It is about time that the less fortunate are getting someone who is trying to give them a break and the rich are unhappy.
Look at Madoff…look at what he got away with and still is. He and his wife should be in jail…I would be if I pulled the nonesense he did.

To vnvet69: I could not agree with you more. The division between the two parties are distructive and not helping the country at all. It is comperable to a race war and instead of working together to get this economy on the right tract, some are looking at minute things and blowing them out of proportion. Whether or not you voted for Obama, you need to get behind our president and hope for the best. It is true, if his policies fail, so does our country so instead of saying “you don’t like my ideas, I’m not helping” which is equivalent to “if you don’t play my game, I’m taking my toys and going home.”Childish and unproductive. Let’s get together as Americans and work to get our country back to what it was. We can all take pride in the success then.

Actually the current destruction of wealth due to poor economic choices of a President not up to doing the job has shown how his polices are destructive to the economy and the country. As CITI goes to a DOLLAR a share and GM is going to bankruptcy whats OBAMA’s answer? More spending for healthcare? Try to do something else. Thats not only foolish its dangerous.
Call your congressman. Call your senators and ask them to change course NOW. They have destroyed enough wealth.

clocks cleaned.

“Bill” wrote suggesting that Pres. Obama subscribes to a “Robin Hood … economic theory” – presumably alluding to the “rob the rich and give to the poor” interpretation of that folk tale.
However, we must remember that the tale of Robin Hood is NOT about “robbing” the rich to benefit the poor: it is about resisting injustice and HIGH TREASON! Robin Hood represented loyalty to an absentee but compassionate and just king in the face of his treacherous, avaricious and exceptionally unjust brother-regent. The rich were not “robbed” because they were rich, but rather because their wealth had been obtained by unjust acts at the expense or “robbery” of the poor – to whom it was merely returned.
So if one is to use the example of Robin Hood to denigrate the proposes and methods of President Barack Obama and his tax plan, one must thereby also assert that those receiving more than $250K per year in personal income have unjustly benefited by the biased tax reductions of the prior administration or administrations – and thus that President Obama is merely seeking to restore what had been taken away by unjustly by deceit and treachery.
Given that the centerpiece of the Obama tax plan consists merely of allowing the Bush tax reductions which preferentially benefited the very wealthy to expire, it is hard to argue that he is NOT in fact a Robin Hood seeking to resist and to make restitution for thefts perpetrated by an unjust usurper regency consisting of the GOP and George W. Bush.

They have to find a way to compete with the talking points against it! If the top earners say they pay 60% of the taxes, exactly how much do they earn 80-90% of total earnings????
As far as contributions 28% is still much more than 15% which is what most people get back when making a contribution.
As far as medicare when they reach it, how does 102,000 pay-in equate to a payout if someone earning over 250,000 –
Tax loop holes can be worked out if yearly income tax is worked on and loopholes removed.

There should be a flat tax – government monies go to things like roads, defense, schools and the like. Tell me how why rich should pay more and the poor should pay nothing, when they receive the same services? Everyone benefits from the government’s expenditures the same (though I’d argue that the poor receive more benefits) – so why does any social-economic group benefit or suffer any more or less?

“What is the problem exactly, you want to live in America, take advantage of it’s cheapo labor, security and business climate but you want to do it for nothing? Yhe more you make the more you have to pay, how hard is that to understand? What really is amazing is how many poor white trash support the fat cats, I mean, for example, Limbaugh makes about 50 million a year yet he has an outstanding white trash power base, people who make next to nothing and apparently understand even less. It’s all about the jumping up and down and the chest thumping, what he says is basically gibberish.I hate to say it but he needs to be put out to pasture, maybe in Iraq, he seems top love that place.”
So that would apply to American’s worship of actors/actresses and sports heroes? The day that Dale Earnhardt died, a Marine helicopter crashed during a training mission and 8 Marines died serving the people of this country. They received a 1 paragraph blurb on page 8 of my newspaper.
The cover on the same paper, and a special section, was devoted to Earnhardt – who was worth well over $300 million on the day he died doing what he loved to do (please, argue with me that poor white trash don’t support NASCAR like a religion!).
The priorities and loyalties of a great many Americans – both Democrat and Republican – are greatly misplaced. I’d argue that the same can be said of most Democrat’s loyalty to Obama.

“America Must Pull out of NAFTA and WTO to SURVIVE”
I worked as an Industrial Engineer for 30 years for Rockwell International.
That is exactly what I did my whole life. I worked for 30 years evaluates labor cost for Rockwell International.
So trust me, I know when someone is getting screwed when it comes to labor cost.
This has been coming on since the very minute America joined NAFTA and the WTO. America has been losing money and jobs to the whole world. Every year and it has grown to a humongous amount in the last few years.
I have always said, things will just keep getting worse then at some point America will go into a total Collapse.
If you think you have money or a good job and will not be affected. I have news for you. Everyone will feel much pain before this is completely over.
Just imagine the Federal Government not having enough money to pay the Social security pensioners or their Medical Benefits or anything else. This is exactly where America is heading, so bucket your seat belt because we are in for a very, very bumpy ride.
My older bother who serviced in the Army in Europe during World War II, He said in Germany the money was so worthless that they had to take a wheel barrel full of money to the store to purchase a loaf of bread.
America is in a cross roads either we Pull Out of NAFTA and the WTO and solve our jobs problem or America will just keep going down, down till America goes into a total collapse.
What the President and Congress are doing is total insanity. This will be the third or forth bailout by congress and he promises us there will be more bailouts to follow.
What you are seeing right now is the planned destruction of America by President Obama and all his elite globalist cabinet members in order to usher in the “ONE WORLD ORDER”. Then we can kiss all of our freedoms good-bye.
Please tell me. Is there no end in sight?
America doesn’t need another bailout. America needs all those jobs that the Politicians have been sending off shore to Mexico, India and China for the last 15 years.
Then the American workers can pay their house payments and feed their family and things will start to improve over night.
This is a NO BRAINIER.
Pull out of NAFTA and the WTO. The International Trade Balances for year 2006.
YOU FIGURE IT OUT: The Hell with borrowing Trillions of Dollars from China.
If America just stopped EXPORTING anything in 2006 we would have lost $1,440 Billion Dollars in Jobs.
If America just stopped IMPORTING anything in 2006 we would have gained $2,200 Billion Dollars in Jobs.
That would be a Net Total Increase of $ 760 Billion Dollars of new Jobs created every year in America.
That would be a net decease in the National Debt every year.
But, all these Politicians are all Globalist and will not give up until America is totally destroyed. This is very, very sad because all is needed is USA PULL out of NAFTA and the WTO and watch the jobs increase. In facts this will create more jobs in America than we can fill.
They would rather Spent Billions of Dollars on trying to under write their Globalist Policies and keep borrowing money from China.
You want creating NEW JOBS in AMERICA?
“STOP Obama and his Globalist buddies from SENDING AMERICAN JOBS Off Shore TO CHINA”.
The American Politicians just don’t get it yet, but the next election we’ll get them.
They can print and throw all the money at this problem they want. Things will get a little better for a while and then we will slide back again into a recess or maybe a depression. Then we will need another bailout.
This is like: do you teach someone to fish or do you keep purchasing the fish for him, with borrowed bailout money from China?
Wait one minute. How did China get so much money and America get so poor?
a. America started giving China all the high paying manufacturing jobs when America joined the WTO.
b. China uses these manufacturing jobs to produce manufactured goods.
c. America then borrows money from China to buy all of these manufactured goods produced in China.
d. Then America starts into a Depression because all the high paying JOBS was send off to China and the Politicians tell us; “What we need now is more new JOBS” so they Borrow Trillions of more Dollars more from China to pay for all those Imports from China.
e. The only thing the American Politicians have created in the last 15 years is the largest NATIONAL DEBIT in History for our Children and Grand-Children to pay off by flipping hamburgers at McDonalds.
American Politicians can not keep sending all of those good paying jobs off shore to China and expect the American workers to work checkout at wal-mart or flip hamburgers at Macdonald’s for minimum wages.
The America Politicians have already given our entire Manufacturing Base to China.
Do you want know what they call a country that has no manufacturing base? That’s the definition of a THIRD WORLD COUNTRY!!!
The American Politicians are going to keep screwing the America workers until they lose everything and that’s exactly where we are headed. If that happens, I would not want to be a politician in either party.
Then at some point things may get damn nasty in Washington, D.C.
