GOP Rep. Brady: Obama is Wrong; Republicans Will Offer Alternative Budget
ABC News’ Rick Klein and David Chalian report: Pressed on Republican critiques of his budget plan at Tuesday night’s press conference, President Obama had a ready answer
“I mean, we haven’t seen an alternative budget out of them,” the president said.
But what will the response be when that’s no longer the case?
“We’ve offered a lot of comprehensive proposals on this stimulus, on the omnibus, but we’re gonna also have a complete budget that, unlike his, does not use funny money, does not have tax increases,” Rep. Kevin Brady, R-Texas, said on “Politics Live” today.
“We always offer a comprehensive budget alternative, even if it’s rejected by the Democrats,” Brady added, “but we’ve seen what happens when Democrats spend. Deficits go through the roof. We have a better idea.”
Deficits rose dramatically during the Bush administration. But Republicans are trying to assign blame to the Democratic Congress; Democrats have held majorities in the House and Senate since 2007.
House Republicans say they will offer a full alternative to the president’s budget, though the same may not happen in the Senate, where GOP leaders say they’re more inclined to offer point-by-point amendments.
Brady, a deputy Republican whip who serves on the House Ways and Means Committee, said the congressional versions of the budget aren’t really improvements on the president’s request.
Though the GOP alternative has little chance of passing, Republicans will be offering up their vision, he said.
“You see in [the president’s] budget major tax increases both on the middle class, on those who invest and save, a lot on small businesses," Brady said. "And when you see the price that average families have to pay for this cap and trade — this climate-change legislation that’s in his budget — it’s gonna go through the roof."
“We take the opposite approach," he added. "We avoid this controversial cap and trade, a program that raises taxes on the middle class. I think Democrats here say they want to control spending, but looking at the budget, looking at the stimulus, looking at how they voted on the omnibus bill, man they’re spending and borrowing just as much as the president.”

They’re going to try to pin the current (like, right now?) deficit on Democrats? Are they in a fantasy camp, or do they just think we’re really stupid?

Kevin Brady is my representative and is as useless as teats on a boar hog. Brady a party line voter hack, who never had an original idea in his life. What a joke that he’s even quoted.

steve , its called “lying for political gain” and the republicans have it down to a science ,they all have phd s is obfuscation and double-talk.
the republican party will call a duck a cow and a fairly significant fraction of the populace will agree in zombie-like fashion , with a little help from fox news/propaganda channel of course.
that speaks volumes about that “fairly significant fraction ” and their ability to think for themselves…or not.

I would like to know if the “Democrats just spend, spend, spend” still works for anyone? As a fiscal conservative, I have serious misgivings about Obama’s budget, but the Republicans have absolutely no credibility in this area.
Reagan and G.W. Bush spent on anything and everything, unless it was science or art. Without the debt they built, we’d have no problem spending our way out of this downturn.

These foolish Republicans really believe that we believe anything that they have to say or do. I quit listening to them just about eight years ago when they started taking the lug nuts off the American way of life.

“…we’ve seen what happens when Democrats spend.”
And America has seen what happens when Republicans spend – historically high deficits, the money funneled to the rich or wasted in an elective war to help tribalist ingrates, and $100 million bonuses for the richest (taxed at less than a bus driver’s salary since they’re capital gains, not income).
I will be happy to get back to ‘wasting’ money on fixing American problems rather than bringing the Light of Democracy to some forsaken desert.

Becasue it has been done before doesn’t make it right.
Bush was out of control. We need to cut our spending, like the rest of us have had to.

It’s not about our turn, it’s has been and always should be about our Country and the people.

jane:” We need to cut our spending, like the rest of us have had to.”
“It’s not about our turn, it’s has been and always should be about our Country and the people.”
Many respected economists believe these two opinion are contradictory. An economic recession is caused by people cutting spending, resulting in cuts in production, layoffs, and then more spending cuts… Reducing government spending is widely seen as having deepened the Depression, along with protectionism (which the Democrats are frightfully fond of).
If the government radically cuts spending, it will be directly firing people at the same time as the private market is firing people. It is difficult to see how this will help shorten the recession at all.

Jhw you are correct to a Point..the Problem with UnRestricted Spending is that eventually, like now, you get to a point where you can borrow no More and have to Print Money.
At that point it is pointless to keep spending since every dollar spent is a dollar made which in turn forces the value of the dollar lower.
Eventually you end up with Hyper Inflation which has a worse effect on the economy than spending Cuts.
At least with Spending Cuts you still have a form of currency that you can rebuild the economy with…..
With a Currency that is worthless…there is No rebuilding anything…

It is time for Third and Forth Parties to step up and Fix what the Two Party System Created……or Ruined..

The GOP considers a permanent spending freeze for everything but the military (and Congressional pay, of course) a viable budget alternative? These folks are more out of touch than we might realize…

How many times did Obama say the word “pollution” or “pollute” when he was referring to his cap-and-trade policy? I noticed the video clip skimmed over those references. Those references show how stupid he is for calling carbon dioxide a pollution. Oh sure. I get it. USA is going to go green by eliminating green house gas emissions. Just like USA is going to reduce debt by creating more debt.

If the GOP has an alternative budget, why don’t they present it. Instead, they are up to the old game of waiting and pouncing on what the President comes up with.
As far as putting alternatives on the table, it would be nice if they served something other than balony for a change.
