Iranian Leader Assails President Obama’s Outreach

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was not particularly receptive to President Obama’s historical video message to the Iranian people for Nowruz — at least not for public consumption.

"Change in words is not enough, although we have not seen change in words either," Khamenei said before a crowd of thousands in the holy city of Mashhad (literally: the place of martyrdom). "Change must be real. We should tell American officials that the change he (Obama) is talking about is a must. You have no choice and must change. If you do not change, God’s divine line of conduct will change you. The world will change you."

"As long as the US administration continues its approach, actions, directions and policies like past thirty years, we are the same nation as we were over these 30 years," he said.

He continued: "Has your hostility towards the Iranian nation changed? Where are its signs? Have you unblocked the assets of the Iranian nation? Have you lifted the oppressive sanctions? Have you given up your mudslinging and making accusations against this great nation and its popular officials? Have you stopped your unconditional support for Israel? What has changed? They give the slogan of change but we have seen nothing in practice. We have seen no change."

Khamenei’s speech was broadcast live on state television.

"They say they have extended a hand to Iran," he continued. "What kind of hand is that? If the extended hand wears a velvet glove and there is a hand made of iron cast underneath, it will not have a good meaning at all."

Said the leader: "Our nation dislikes it when you say we both negotiate and coerce or when you allure and intimidate us. You cannot talk with our nation that way. We do not have any background of the new government and president of America. We will monitor their performance and will judge. If you change, our behavior will change too."

Why do I get the feeling this Obama vs. Iran is going to end up with Iran winning and the US looking/being weaker?
And then Obama’s response will be it was a problem he inherited from a previous administration and this failure with Iran is a distraction from his other plans.

Does he mean that when O starts kowtowing to them more/openly…they will kick us, make fun of us for being weak…oh yeah to late they already did that a couple weeks ago…this is the second time.

It’s our fault. America has to do more to gain Iran’s confidence and respect.
President Obama promised to extend a hand and to talk with out pre-conditions. Obviously he has not done that in a competent and effective way.
It’s time for more of that “change” you promised, Mr. President.

It is all for public consumption nothing more. Who was Obama talking to? Just Iranian leadership, or Syria, Jordan, Egypt,or the public in the Middle East in General.
It is a propaganda war. It will go a long way, if nothing else, to secure the support of our allies.
To expect Iran to capitulate at this point in our non relationship is absurd.
Some of you posters remind of the skinny guy who gets sand kicked in his face at the beach, looking for Charles Atlas to give you a pair. Continue to hide behind your facade.
Obama is doing the responsible thing; talking from strength.

-Khamenei
He said ‘unconditional’. He didn’t say: “Have you stopped your support for Israel.”

“Obama is doing the responsible thing; talking from strength.”
A rather naive comment. Talk is cheap. Actions speak louder than words, as it is said.
When Iran has its nukes, what will you say then?

“A rather naive comment. Talk is cheap. Actions speak louder than words, as it is said.”
Oh and what action do you suggest? -drop a bomb on them? -send them some flowers?
Since they don’t have a nuke yet, talking IS the appropriate action now.

Obama is doing a better job rehabbing America then Bush is on his come trail attempting to rehab himself.
Bush book will come out just in time for the 2010 elections. Just in time for us to look at the decisions that give us the deficit and the cost of the deficit.
Already nerds in the middle east have seen Obama’s message and it will do more for the American image then Bush’s approach.

To Independent Voter-I can’t be with you. As Obama and his admin. have no brain and lack of an elaborate strategies for foreign policy, economic plan and two wars so that it causes easily to make a lot of loophole like AIG bonus, answer of Iran’s Supreme Leader… etc. Do you remember that Obama said during the campaign that “the only reason the Iranians hate American is because Bush was in Oval office! He said if we voted for him they would love us again!” At that time I believed Obama’s just rhetorical
word, but not any more nowadays.

Obama is all talk. The American people are realizing that what we have in America is a one-party system. I remember when everyone voted Democrat because they promised to end the Iraq War but instead betrayed everyone who voted for them. Obama is the same. He has promised to continue the wars and is a continuation of the same project George W. was executing.

Posted by: Jocelyn Rampton Lynch | March 21, 2009, 12:31 pm 12:31 pm

As an a former Republican I can tell you that all this is BS and rhetoric. Both party’s are filled with thieves and phonies. Obama is no exception. He hasn’t even begun his term and already people see that foreign policy has not changed. What we need is a new American Revolution.
We are only talking nicely with Iran because they are too strong for us to fight and win successfully. If they were week like Iraq and Afghanistan we would have attacked.

Still don’t understand why Iran is upset with us.
- It was President Jimmy Carter who allowed the Shah to fall so the Islamic radicals could take over.
Be happy, Iran, that Jimmy Carter was on your side.
- It was George Bush that took out Iran’s #1 enemy, Hussein in Iraq. (Iran battle Hussein for years and could never do it.)
Iran, the U.S. has done more for you than you have done the U.S.

Posted by: bailey | March 21, 2009, 1:20 pm 1:20 pm

It doesn’t matter. The president reached out in a very thoughtful way. If their leadership wants to reject it that’s fine but there will be many Iranians who will wish they could reach back in like matter and in the end perhaps they will move towards leadership that joins the rest of the world instead embracing this rogue nation mentality.
Or as my mama always told me – you treat others with dignity and respect no matter how they act and you will have done the right thing which is all you have control over in life.

Posted by: Annie | March 21, 2009, 1:24 pm 1:24 pm

“The president reached out in a very thoughtful way…”
Is that supposed to be some kind of sick joke?
This came from Obama less than two weeks ago:
“The President declared a national emergency with respect to Iran pursuant to the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (50 U.S.C. 1701 1706) to deal with the unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States constituted by the actions and policies of the Government of Iran.”
Obama’s mental state needs to be examined. Iran is a threat? Give me a break.

It is becoming evident to everyone that Obama is horrible. Except to blinded liberals that cling to hope, of course.

Well, I thought the Demi-Dems said that Hillary or Barrack (as prez or sos) were just going to be SO Good as international politicians & diplomats that all our problems would just ‘melt away’ as soon as they were on the scene. President Bush was just such an ‘Evil Doer’ that none of his approaches or assessments could possibly be correct. You know, Bush was just ‘SO Mean & Hateful’ and that was why there were Bad People in the world…………..You mean to tell me that some Bad Guys are just So Bad that they will not listen to kind words, Liberalistic Humanitarianism, and behind the scenes Political Niceties…………..
You mean to tell me that these Bad Guy World Leaders just could not feel the ‘Warm Glow’ coming off of Obama as he spoke……….. The world just loved Obum SO much (prior to the election), and now they just seem to be turning on him — Well Imagine That.
You don’t think that some of those countries Favored him because they thought that he was so Inexperienced and Nice (Nice in his Naiveté) that he would just be too Slow and Nice in his approach that the situation would be over before he knew what hit him. You don’t think that some of those countries wanted a US Prez that promoted diplomacy so much that he would be easily Run Over, as Iran’ plays’ with him and Russia & China are up to their usual tricks (including toying with our ships at sea).

Both partys are the same. The Democrat party and Republicans are twins of the same globalized beast. Both partys work for wallstreet not the American people.
If they worked for the American people we would have closed our border, gotten out of Iraq, and jailed the crooks on wallstreet.
Instead we bailout the crooks on wallstreet, leave open our borders, and we will have 50,000 troops in Iraq for the next 100 years. McCain, Obama same ideology different faces.
It’s funny how everyone here eats up both party lines. In the end both partys have the same goals. You look like a loser when you subscribe to the two party system. Because when it comes down to it both are 97% the same. Both partys are open border globalist.
And the media includeing ABC, FOXs are two sides of the same coin. One plays Republican and pretends to be Conservative, the other plays Democrat, and pretends to be liberal. The media, Republican, Democrats their all the same really, pushing the same anti-American goals. They pretend to be outraged with bailouts but both the media and politicians are owned by the people getting the bailouts.

Unless this isn’t a very good translation it sounds to me like the Iranians don’t really want to fight. He said that they WILL change if we do. Since by far most Americans don’t want to fight either it would be a colossal blunder by both sides to get into an armed conflict at this point. Before they get close enough to building an atomic weapon that things come to a head militarily we better press full-on with diplomacy.

I am actually heartened that Iran is rejecting Obama’s overture. Do they really think he is in a position right now to offer more? And are they really in a position to be a holdout – oil is too low, they are too isolated, Mahmoud has screwed up the country royally the past few years with cockamamie projects including nukes that have no connection to prosperity and development for Iran.

So they kicked the Shah out and replaced him with an even more radical leader who brought them under Soviet influence anyway, so there went the resources. At the same time we made hypocrites out of ourselves by claiming to be the ‘guardians of democracy’ while killing a nascent democracy in the cradle, rightfully earning the distrust of the Iranian people to this day. I can’t see how any of this turned out to be in our national interest.

The mad mullahs had better regain their sanity quickly.
Worse pollution on the planet is nuclear pollution, which remain to maim and kill for tens of thousands of years.
Obama knows priority. Mending fences with the Russians is top of the list.
The Iranians could quickly see themselves isolated fast.
And considering that Iranian nukes are conveniently underground, that makes it very easy to bury them right there.
Had the dumb and wild bush had not gone into Iraq UNPROVOKED, the Iranians would not be wrongly guessing that US will not bury their nuclear program.

This is the best possible way for the country to change. No matter how powerful a “supreme leader” thinks they are… if the people decide to move as a community/group to disagree, there is no way the current Iranian regime can stand.
Do you think the King of England was sending loving messages to his “subjects” that decided to take America for themselves?

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei provided the first official reaction to a video greeting to Iran that Obama released Friday on the occasion of Nowruz, the Persian new year. “We have no experience of this new president and administration,” Ayatollah Khamenei said. “We will wait and see. If you change your attitude, we will change, too. If you do not change, then our nation will build on its experience of the past 30 years.”
What are the facts?
There is no dispute that Iran is already a nuclear state. The states with this capacity are many; among them are Japan and Germany. But, there is a great difference between nuclear fuel cycle capacity, and a state with nuclear bomb, such as India, USA, Russia, England, France, China, Israel and Pakistan. The steps required to allay our fear that Iran in the future may develop Nuclear Bomb are:
1. Nuclear Fuel Cycle Consortium;
2. An international nuclear shield for all nations in the Middle East, including Iran;
3. A nuclear free Middle East.
Iran already has provided a window for cooperation with USA. They have invited USA and other states such as Germany, Japan to participate as a member of an International consortium to enrich uranium in Iran. We must accept their invitation to actively monitor the process.
To ease the tension in the Middle East, first we must manage Israel. We can not diffuse the problem of our own creation at the expense of Iranians.
Could President Obama’s foreign and internal policies be independent of Israel?
Patrick Buchanan, attached as comment to the above link, is a good starting point of discussion for changing our course in the Middle East.
Do you really think that the situation has changed at all over the past 35 years?

Look everyone. The U.S must change its tone to the rest of the world and stop being a bully. U.S is in no position to dictate to the world about democracy and human rights (after guantanamo and …) At the same time I think U.S can not ignore Iran anymore. They should change their talk and their action, negotiate and better their relation with Iran. Obama is on the right path. He should repent for all the 50 years of hostility to Iranian people and accept the new Iran. He is on the right path.

President George W. Bush proven correct about the Islamocommunist Persians.
President George W. Bush proven correct on North Korea, Russia, China, India, Pakistan, Hamas, Hezbollah, Israel, Syria, Afghanistan etc…
So now Mr. Obama in insulting President Bush has now been insulted by the leader of the communist Persians.
Now America has not only the problem of looking like it does not know what it is doing led by Obama, but has the problem of being humiliated on the world stage by the Persian communists.
A person who occupies the White House can not be dismissed like this by anyone and yet Russia and Iran have both now dismissed American leadership.
This will bring terror attacks as confidence grows. It will eventually bring a big war to America, because Mr. Obama is ruling from a 5th grade elementary liberal misunderstanding in how the adult world operates.
God bless

If you really want to understand how they view Obama’s message in Iran, Google “Laura Ingraham & Brigitte Gabriel – Obama & Iran (3/20/09)”. Gabriel is brilliant.

“We are only talking nicely with Iran because they are too strong for us to fight and win successfully. If they were week like Iraq and Afghanistan we would have attacked.”
They are weak like Iraq was. Their economy is in shambles and they have to import gasoline. Israel planned to attack the nuclear labs last Fall, but Bush didn’t give them permission. They would have to fly over Iraq.

You must mean if we really want to understand how they choose to portray Obama’s message in Fox-News right-wing fantasy land. Do you think I’m going to believe these dolled-up talking mannequins’ snide interpretations of what real courage is? -while they try and scare me with some pictures of primitive Iranian missiles? What a joke!

He should probably go through the normal channels..the chief clerics don’t like these work arounds..directly to their people. Many Iranians already want western freedoms but they know they can’t vote out the more fanatical religious leaders..short of a revolution.

“2. 20 Billion Dollars Per Month, with Interest, to…”
Uh… 80B a year Iraq, 10B a year Afghanistan divided by 12 is 7.5B a month.
“3. Over 5,000 US Soldiers Lives, Thousands of Dis-Membered US Soldiers, Thousands of Forced Amputations, due to Military Action, Multiple of US Enlisted Committing Suicide, Hundreds of US Soldiers Returning Home, Injuring themselves via [[Self Inflicted Wounding]]”
It’s still around 4,000, 2900 Combat related deaths. More have actually died from accidents than “suicides” and “self inflicted injuries”, but you can make those numbers look however you want, as you did.
“4. And over 1,000,000 Innocent Iraqi Citizens. Infants, Boys, Girls, Women, Teenaged Children, Women, Men and the Elderly Killed, under Blatant Deceptions, Falsehoods and Stellar LIES.”
Actually this has been proven to be lies commonly spread by American loving leftists in this country. The terrorists and insurgents we have killed have been labeled as “civilians” because they are not part of a government organization, thus easily thrown into a big hulking misleading number. The number of “true” innocents killed is a fraction of that, and all of them include actions by terrorist/insurgents/sectarian fighting.
So what you have done is intentionally (or your source did) use misleading numbers to make President Bush, our military troops and leaders look bad. Who do you think that helps, our troops or the people trying to undermine us?

Fascinating, by being stern to Iran about nuke weapons, willing to do anything to prevent it, they are maniacs wanting to destroy the world? That’s rich.
Ommentum, how far are you willing to go to prevent Iran from getting nukes? Lay it out there for us, just assume diplomacy fails and they give it the finger. How far should the world go to prevent it.

“Dead Silent on these Glaring Numbers !!”
After 9/11, the left, and the American people screamed to improve intelligence, tighten up border security, have more police and security in the US. That cost federal dollars. Naturally most expected more federal spending.
However, Bush and the congress did go far beyond in spending on things like prescription drug programs, more money in medicaid, as well as bloated pork spending. For that everyone can agree that it was too much spending.
But now we are spending at twice the rate of Bush and somehow that’s justified? Bush spending was pork, Obama spending is stimulus? Bush earmarks bad, Obama earmarks equals jobs! The blatant hypocrisy is astonishing.

Indepent voter–”Bush book will come out just in time for the 2010 elections. Just in time for us to look at the decisions that give us the deficit and the cost of the deficit.
Already nerds in the middle east have seen Obama’s message and it will do more for the American image then Bush’s approach.
______________________________
Umm, Bush did not “give us the deficit” though he did increase it. (War has a tendency to do that).
What Obama’s “message” (along with his hefty contribution to Hamas) will tell the middle east is that we have another “carter like” president who thinks sending a debate team to the gun fight will result in success..When you treat a terrorist state as an equal, you build a footing for them to stand on when they kick you in the shins…

O–” You are the only unbelievable one…First, bush did NOT expand government to its largest size ever..thats simply untrue, its also untru that he Implemented a trillion dollar stimulus”.. the bulk of his stimulus was in tax breaks NOT spending. Obama on the other hand has SPENT over 4.5 trillion so far.. and there is no indication to date that any of it has or will work…I am not even going to address your other comments about the war.. other than to say whyd id you use the name “O”.. was “code pink” already taken.. Wars are expensive, and people form both sides die including innocents.. that is pretty much what makes war undesirable and a deterrent.. Compare some of your numbers with WW2 and see how thye stack up.. are you aware that we lost more people in the first hour of the Normandy invasion than we have lost in the entire Iraqi war? that the death toll for Viet Nam was 20 times that of Iraq — or that while we have killed thousands of Iraqi citizens, Pol Pot killed a million cambodians and vietnamese civilians because we left the battle field too soon..
Perhaps we should blame all those deaths on you folks who forced us out of there before the job was finished…
You and those who share your strong opinions against war are just as responsible for those deaths as any soldier on the ground…

O–”We are Not The Saviors Of The World”– No we are not, but we do live here.. and last time I checked, a nuclear war would kill us all.. not just those who were “directly involved”..

Posted by: arkie vet | March 23, 2009, 2:13 pm 2:13 pm

O…”let nature take it’s course.” Really, does that include ALL global conflicts, or just the ones that the liberals sanction; such as, Darfur, Sudan. where people are being killed and tortured by unmerciful dictatorial leaders who either want to gain power or control power….Or perhaps Afghanistan where Obama wants to increase troop strength.. Ummmm sounds familiar does it not, Iraq, but wait that was a Republican led war and that was just wrong was it not? Perhaps you should go to Iraq and explain your views to the families who tried to claim or identify their loved ones bodies in mass graves..I am sure they would welcome your opinion..
