Palin Dumped as Star Speaker at GOP Dinner

ABC News’ Teddy Davis and Ferdous Al-Faruque report:

ap sarah palin pulls out 090331 blog Palin Dumped as Star Speaker at GOP Dinner Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) has been dumped as the keynote speaker at an upcoming GOP fundraising dinner in Washington, DC, because she was not able to make a firm commitment to attend.

"After initially confirming her attendance, Governor Palin’s team informed the Committees that her gubernatorial responsibilities in Alaska prevented her from committing until the end of the legislative session," said Brian Walsh, a spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC). "We completely understand and respect Governor Palin’s focus on her official state business; however, there is obviously an enormous amount of planning that goes into this annual event."

To great fanfare, the fundraising arms of House and Senate Republicans announced via press release on March 16 that John McCain’s 2008 running mate would be the keynote speaker at a June 8 dinner.

After Palin’s participation was widely reported by the national press, Palin spokesman Bill McAllister said Palin knew nothing of the event.

"I communicated with the governor directly and she did not know anything about it," McAllister told the Anchorage Daily News."I pointed out the (National Republican Senatorial Committee) press release and she was like, no," he said.

Organizers of the Republican fundraising dinner reacted to the Anchorage Daily News story by reconfirming to the media that Palin would be in attendance even though neither Palin nor her staff ever made such a commitment in public.

Asked to explain the discrepancy, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) told ABC News that it was continuing to count on Palin’s participation because an unnamed political aide had reassured them that the Alaska governor would keynote the fundraising dinner despite McAllister’s comments to the Anchorage Daily News.

As the dinner drew closer, the NRSC and NRCC grew antsy at the lack of a public commitment. The committees confirmed late Tuesday evening that they were scratching her from the agenda and replacing her with Newt Gingrich, the former House Speaker who led Republicans in 1994 to their first House majority in 40 years.

"We decided to go in another direction," said NRCC spokesman Ken Spain. "Speaker Gingrich is a leader and an influential voice within the Republican Party and we are thrilled to have him."

Newt Gingrich – I really feel sorry for the Republicans who still have no leader. Newt is too old and racist.

You don’t have to cue the liberal hatred, Kate. All we want are leaders in this country that have an ounce of common sence. Anyone who’s first act is to dress in the highest priced clothes in the world at the expence of the unknowing rank and file party payers for her selfish indulgence can not be trusted with real power!! She would be like the CEO who expects to make $30 million dollars a year while that same CEO expects all of their workers to make $10.00 per hour for life with no benifits!!

This is news why? Is this truly a suprise..Heck NO! She was a goner when she opened her mouth and revealed how stupid she was to the US. Palin is the only one who thinks she is capable of being POTUS. The party used her for beauty only. The honorable John McCain is definitely kicking himself hard for listening to his handlers on that one!
She will not be able to stand against the other real Candidates (men or women)of the Party on the national scene ever..! She was a total disgrace to women and the Party as a whole. Please keep her off the national political stage. Matter of fact send back on the cruise with William Kristol whom told John McCain and crew she was a smart woman. Let him deal with what he created a ego style dimwit beauty queen

I think the use of the word “dumped” in the headline is not exactly correct. More like another slam at Gov Palin by the MSM. I would have thought that maybe Mitt Romney or one of the other younger Gov’s. But with all thats going on within the States at this time, I applaud Gov Palin for staying home an taking care of business.

This is excellent news, Rush will turn more people off than Palin. Republican politicians just get smarter, and smarter, don’t they ? The same numb, and dumb policies that have trickled themselves to a national standstill. If we could just get a leader like Rush, just think what the rest of the world would think of us, and we could start combining the skin heads with the bubble mouths like Rush, and what a wonderful world it would be. I am really happy they chose him because every time they continue to make the wrong moves it just keeps us in position for longer Democratic majority. What a Party. Never have I seen a party where they all whine, and critisize, and make excuses, and cry foul, about everything, yet they do nothing but that. What rug were you hiding under when you had the majority of leadership and let our country fall into the cracks it is now in ? Where were you wonderful ideas then? I would be ashamed to call myself a Republican if all I ever did was bitch and gripe about someone who is at least, trying to get something done to clean up the mess you left us. Get another job, please, but keep Rush in the limelight, he only represtents what is wrong with our country, and hopefully there are more of us who want to save it, not destroy it. Maybe Rush just wants it for himself. I know an Island he can have, no Alcatraz is too close, come to think of it.

It seems that since Newt converted to catholicism and his past sins have been erased or forgiven, the rightwing GOP seem to think Newt is a contender for 2012.
Newt can hide under catholicism. He can continue to commit sin, confess, be wiped free of them and the rightwing will accept him for it. It seems you can be the most horrible sinner but as long as you beg for God’s forgiveness the rightwing church crowd will love you for it.

Hey, easy there, now. I’m a liberal but not a scornful hater and definitely not someone opposed to nice-looking people on a political platform. This one seems fairly easy. The Repubs are eager to hedge their bets and are not looking to give the appearance of making a similar mistake twice. I think most of the reasonable right-leaners these days know they’re going to have to bet on a more issue-savvy horse next time. So right now, even as early in the process as it is, they’re going to put a tried and true party workhorse and fundraiser, Gingrich, on that podium. Can’t blame them there. He’s smarter than Palin even if he’s not as pretty. Newtie will talk the talk he needs to talk unerringly–and without impulsive pot-shots, which Palin is still angry enough to throw.

Airhead from Anchorage needs to stay home and find some serious gravitas. Actually, this is the second time she stiffed the national G.O.P. using the, “I’m a busy Governor speech.”. The real reason she won’t leave is that both houses of her legislature and her Lt. Gov. all want to take the stiumulus money. She must stay to thrwart the will of her consituents. Oh, and to show she has a bigger pair than Jindal and Sanford.

Not surprising, she does’nt know what magazines she has read, whose child Trig is or where her clothes were purchased from… She knows the ingredients of moose stew though!!!:( The fact that McCain chose this inbred hick, cost him the election and the reason I voted for Obama.

Posted by: ROB | April 1, 2009, 12:57 am 12:57 am

Just goes to show you the kind of sorry state the Republican Party is in, when they can’t find anyone other than a has-been congressman that was flushed out as Speaker of the House 10 yrs ago. Has the GOP forgotten that Newt went head to head with Clinton over the 96 budget and Newt blinked? I said it back then that Clinton had more brains before breakfast than Newt had all day, the same goes with Obama. By the way I am a Republican and no I am no Palin fan, and she might not be leadership material but when it comes to fundraising the GOP needs her more than she needs the GOP. I have a feeling that they’ll be calling her again.

Posted by: miami hurricane | April 1, 2009, 1:06 am 1:06 am

The left really needs to get over hating Palin. Do you really think Obama spent any less for his cloths? To me however, that’s not an important issue.
And as far as Newt converting to Catholicism, at least it’s not a church that has sermons damming America. Newt Gingrich is the reason why Clinton had a budget surplus after 1994. It was because of the Republican Congress. Clinton dosen’t deserve all the credit. He just signed the budget. I hope Gingrich runs for office in 2012.

Looks to me like Palin is doing her best to stay in Alaska and tend to Alaska’s business. As for SarahPAC “unidentified aides,” they need to learn they can’t make commitments and “run” her schedule. Palin probably had enough of that with the GOP staff assigned to her during the 2008 campaign.

Posted by: Phoebe | April 1, 2009, 6:57 am 6:57 am

It’s apparent that few off the posters here actually reaed the story.
From what I see, some low level no name staffer gave a tentative confirmation that she would be there and she did not even know about it. Since most govenors schedules are arragned far in advance, it is not surprising that they now had to get someone else.
Just another excuse for ABC to come up with a attention grabbing but inaccurate headline.

Posted by: Melanie | April 1, 2009, 7:04 am 7:04 am

Its good to see even in this bad economy ABC “news” is willing to hire 10th graders. Making a story out of nothing doesn’t make it a story. Palin wasn’t able to commit to be a speaker so they got another speaker. Only in the delusional minds of the far left liberals is this even worth reporting. But I forgot the left needs any type of “bad” story about a republican they can muster at this time to hide all the losers the democrats are turning out to be with all their tax problems.

Newt – the leader of the witch hunt regarding Monica while he was busy having an affair himself Newt? The same fantastic guy that informed his wife he wanted a divorce as she lay in a hospital bed after cancer surgery Newt? Morals and values Newt?
Palin blew this one. By now she should be aware her fellow conservatives want to have her for breakfast and she needs to step lightly and dot all “i’s.” So this just shows yet again she’s not up for the challenge. She appears to keep giving the base reason to be annoyed with her. They will use anything they can find.

Newt is the same old GOP junk. Palin is the real deal and soon all America will be ready to embrace a day when leaders like Reagan made us strong, not like the weak nation that idiot Bush and the socialist Obama have created. Weak republicans need to get over their sissy ways and get strong or they will never win with retreads like Newt, Steele, any Bush or the old country club republican ideas-get with it sissy boys and get behind a real strong American. If not Palin, then look at Sen Jim Demint or Gov Sanford of South Carolina for they are real leaders and not sissy boys trying to run a con game on the base of the GOP!

I really doubt that the Republican party would act on information from a “low level staffer”. I also doubt that Govenor Palin knew nothing about the “shindig”. A govenor is a major player in any political party. The Republican party, as dysfunctional as they might be right now, for once, did the right thing.
About Newt Gingrich, I would rather listen to him anyway. Newt was involved with a “hottie”? That doesn’t cost me tax dollars or send the nation into a thermal nuclear war. It didn’t ruin our auto industry or turn Wallstreet into a bunch of crooks. We would have still had Bernie Madoff and female teachers “lusting” after their male students.
Had John McCain tagged a Romney or Gingrich for the VP spot last time around, he might have been President.
We will never know. I do know that I’m a 60 year old registered/voting Republican who voted for Obama.

Trust me Chad, jealousy has nothing to do with the reactions that Palin garners. We LISTENED to her and realized that she is simply too un-intelligent, hypocritical and dogmatic to be anywhere near the White House. By the way, your approval number seems to be out of date. The most recent polling numbers I found, from 2 weeks ago, shows this:
Very positive 40.5
Somewhat positive 20.8 percent
Somewhat negative 12.5 percent
Very negative 20.2 percent
Don’t know/Didn’t answer 6 percent
(Based on a survey of Alaskans, not on a survey of the GOP supporters in the lower 48). Her numbers are barely average, just like her…..

PresGov, you’re a fool if you believe Palin is responsible for Alaska’s economy. Oil companies in Alaska account for 82% of Alaska’s revenue. “The revised 2010 forecast anticipates that oil taxes, royalties and fees will provide 82 percent of the state’s anticipated $3.18 billion in unrestricted revenues. Alaska has no personal income tax and no statewide sales tax.” Funny that her popularity there is only average compared to other states, considering how much money the residents get from their government and how little taxes they pay. She unlike Obama and alot of other politicians, realized that just because a government agency is making money—-that she not grow the government instead leaving her state in the black. Palin even in her early political days, believed in cutting cost and government inefficiencies. Obama, on the other hand has done what ? The opposite. And, Gingrich was having an extra-marital affair the whole time he was trying to get Clinton impeached for the same thing! Can you say, hypocrite? I can…hypocrite.

PresGov…It’s funny that you think Obama should be impeached after 2 months of trying to get this country out of the mess that the incredibly incompetent Bush/Cheney left us in. It’s funny that you want Obama impeached and you call him a numbskull after 8 years of secrecy and moronic “bushisms”. You say he has never run anything successfully…except for his almost flawless campaign in which he WON the presidency. If anyone needs to be investigated for high crimes and misdemeanors, it’s Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Gonzales/and Ashcroft.

Didn’t Sara Palins husband belong to a group that was trying to get Alaska to secede from the Union? Very questionable accociations! I say, let her run in 2012…I don’t think she’ll make it through the first debate.

The Oil corporations in Alaska have to share their profits with the citizens of Alaska. Doesn’t that sound kind of like “spreading the wealth” socialism that Republicans are supposed to be against?

Dude – you forgot to mention she’ll need to discuss why the universe is only 6,000 years old. LOL. The party of Barney Rubble and Fred Flintstone.

dave in nm: You wouldn’t say that if you were the recipient of some of those funds! You know very well that you would be very happy to receive one of those checks! You are just jealous that your governor hasn’t forced the oil companies in your state to share their profits with you!

Some guy: What about Ted Kennedy, a democrat, who ran off and left a girl to drown in his car? I believe he was also married at the time, too, and the girl was not his wife! You democrats shouldn’t act so high and mighty because you have your share of people who cheat on their spouses, too! In fact the Kennedy family is famous for it! John Kennedy is known to have cheated on Jackie and John and Ted’s father Joseph Kennedy cheated on their mother, too!

Seen Russia from my house: You’ll be laughing out of the other side of your mouth when she actually wins in 2012!

Mrs. Robinson: You might think the republican party is the party of Barney Rubble and Fred Flintstone but you are forgetting that it’s also the party of Abraham Lincoln and, I could be wrong, I think it was also the party of Theodore Roosevelt. These were two of the best presidents that this country has ever had. I am very proud to be a member of that party!

Posted by: DM | April 2, 2009, 4:40 am 4:40 am

The Republican Party was indeed the party of Lincoln, Roosevelt and Eisenhower. They must be spinning in their graves now that their party is identified with the likes of Palin, Bachman, Limbaugh, Cantor, and Gingrich.

Yup – gotta shoot me some wolves before those extremists prove it’s illegal and make me stop. Sorry to be missin out on such a great opportunity to push my cause though, also, too, you betcha.
(I guess this qualifies as the liberal hatred that was predicted by Kate. I’m just dishing some of the same spite back to Palin that she consistently delivered every day from the convention until she lost the election, and a little beyond as she continues to whine about how people are treating her.)

She had a prior committment to go moose hunting with her bare hands. Or maybe it was an appointment to revisit the turkey slaughtering plant. She’s got priorities!

Newt is to old and very much so a RACIST! If this is what the Republican Party stands for, I don’t understand why Michael Steele is so excited about being a Republican for 17 years unless, he don’t see himself as a Minority. I dislike everything the Republicans stand for.

Posted by: bdavis | April 2, 2009, 12:13 pm 12:13 pm

bdavis: I have news for you! If you hate white people then you’re racist too! Blacks hating whites is just as racist as whites hating blacks and just as evil! No one can do anything about the color of skin that they have, not even us white people! I have more news for you, too! We conservative Christian republicans hate everything you godless atheists and liberals stand for too!

Sammy: Yes, she has priorities! One of them is governing a state! Every minute of her time is scheduled for weeks or months ahead! If she can’t work a meeting into her schedule then she can’t attend! If they wanted her to be their keynote speaker they should have notified her months ago!

Posted by: DM | April 2, 2009, 6:16 pm 6:16 pm

Brooklyn Democrat: I don’t know about the rest of them but I think Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower would be very proud of Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich!

Posted by: DM | April 3, 2009, 1:45 am 1:45 am

Newt. Wow, brush the cobwebs off that oldie-but-goodie. Why doesnt the NRCC just exhume the (undoubtedly well preserved) corpse of Ronald Reagan and skip all the limp, uninspiring people they have in the bullpen now? Romney? Out of touch, Coulter? Crazy. Rush? Maniacal Hater. McCain? Sold his soul. Jindal? Wide-eyed social climber. And Palin? What is a Palin?

DM, your last statement “We conservative christian republicans hate everything you godless athiests stand for too” is exactly what is wrong with your so called religious beliefs. No true christian has hate in their soul like you do. You think just because a person is a democrat that they are athiest. What a laugh. You are just a very hypocritical so called christian. You will never go to heaven with that type of beliefs. You are far from being a christian. You are what makes people think twice about religion, when you spread around so much hate. You must be catholic with all that stone throwing. You need to go to church and actually listen.

Posted by: leesa | April 17, 2009, 1:25 pm 1:25 pm

leesa: No I’m not a Catholic. I would proudly admit it if I were. In fact I’m a Pentecostal. I stand by my statement that we Christian republicans hate everything that the godless atheists stand for because they don’t believe in God and they are actively trying to get even the mention of God taken out of our government. I did not say that I hate them personally. I said I hate what they stand for. There is a difference. What they stand for is sin. It is possible to love a person and hate their lifestyle and their beliefs and what they stand for. However, I am not saying that you have to be a republican to be a Christian. I am also not saying that you can’t be a democrat and be a Christian. I know that you can be. There are Christians in all of the political parties except for maybe the American communist party. Being a republican or a democrat or a independant or whatever has nothing to do with Christianity. What I was talking about is the Satanic agenda that the atheists like Michael Newdow have that are trying to get even the mention of God taken out of our pledge of alliegance and off our money, etc. Those are the things that I was talking about and the things that I hate.

Posted by: DM | April 20, 2009, 6:42 am 6:42 am

leesa: I do go to church regularly, three times a week in fact, and I do listen! My pastor preaches about the love of God but he gets pretty blunt about sin, too, and I do listen!
