Palin on Stimulus: Thanks, But No Thanks
ABC News’ Imtiyaz Delawala reports:
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) announced Thursday that her state will accept only 55 percent of the federal stimulus funds available to her state, rejecting over $400 million in funding available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act – a higher percentage than any other Republican governor who has vowed to reject portions of the federal stimulus.
Palin says she is turning down funds that expand state government programs that she believes will not be sustainable when the federal stimulus ends, echoing arguments made by some of her Republican counterparts.
"We will request federal stimulus funds for capital projects that will create new jobs and expand the economy," Palin said in a statement released by the Alaska governor’s office this afternoon. "We won’t be bound by federal strings in exchange for dollars, nor will we dig ourselves a deeper hole in two years when these federal funds are gone."
"Simply expanding state government under this federal stimulus package creates an unrealistic expectation that the state will continue these programs when the federal funds are no longer available," Palin added in the statement. "Our nation is already over $11 trillion in debt; we can’t keep digging this hole."
Republican counterparts like South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford – who, like Palin, is viewed as eyeing a 2012 presidential run — announced last week that he may reject nearly a quarter of the funds headed to the Palmetto State, including money for state education funding. Other GOP governors such as Rick Perry of Texas, Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and Haley Barbour of Mississippi have announced they will reject stimulus funds intended to expand state unemployment benefits.
According to the Anchorage Daily News, the largest portion of federal stimulus money that Palin is turning down includes $160 million for education funding. In a statement released by her office, Palin said "Alaska has seen unprecedented increases in the level of state funding for education because that is our priority. I don’t want to automatically increase federal funding for education program growth, such as the National Endowment for the Arts, at a time when Alaska can’t afford to sustain that increase."
The $514 million in federal stimulus funding Palin says Alaska will request will be for shovel-ready capital projects, nearly half of which are focused on transportation projects accepted by the state last month. In the bill submitted by Palin to Alaska state legislators today, an additional $250 million in funds were requested for capital projects, including $20.7 million for education and job training, $3 million for the Alaska Vocational Training Center, $68.6 million for water and sewer projects and storage tank replacements, nearly $40 million for public housing projects through the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation, and $116.0 million for the University of Alaska Fairbanks Research Vessel, an ice-breaking ship that will support scientific research in arctic waters.
While Palin’s request left nearly half of the stimulus funding available on the table, she said she will not block efforts by local or state officials to secure more federal funding for individual projects. After Palin’s announcement today, Democratic Alaska Sen. Mark Begich issued a statement calling on state lawmakers to accept the remaining stimulus funds available.
"I trust the legislature will do the right thing and take Alaska’s share of the money for education in the economic recovery package," Begich said in a statement. "We owe it to our children to give them the most opportunities possible, and this is money fairly allocated to Alaska in this stimulus package."
UPDATE: DNC Slams Palin
The Democratic Party is responding to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s (R) rejection of 55 percent of the federal stimulus funds owed to her state by issuing a statement which invokes her earmark requests and accuses her of putting her political future head of Alaska’s families.
See below for the DNC statement:
DNC communications director Brad Woodhouse: "After soliciting and accepting more federal dollars per capita than any other governor in the union, Sarah Palin’s decision today to deny the state of Alaska over half a billion dollars in recovery and reinvestment funds – including millions for schools, energy and public safety – appears to be nothing more than political posturing. At a time when her state is suffering, Alaska’s working families cannot afford a governor that puts her political future ahead of the needs of the state and its families.

This is a story why? I mean why does AK need any funds at all, I thought over the fall last year we heard about what a bang up job she was doing and how well and full the state coffers were. If they are hurting why are they still giving tax refunds and percapita payments? If you are against the stimulus Gov. Palin, turn it all down.

The whole stock market was a Ponzi right from the time that 401k’s were sold, to the regular working class, as their retirement plan. With all of the hoopla about how the taxpayers own the company, so now, we should finally be able to regulate the outrageous salaries and party like spending. Who owned it before? The taxpayers who had their 401k’s invested. I have been saying for years that there should be regulation on the salaries that get paid, to executives of publicly traded companies. I actually had a number of people tell me it didn’t come out of profits. Is there a good fairy I don’t know about?

SHE PRESIDES OVER A RICH OIL INCOME STATE. Of all states, Alaska is the one that doesn’t need the stimulus money. There are less than 1/2 a million people in the entire state, and each person gets well over a thousand back each year in extra income generated by the State. They also pay no income taxes….SO WHY IS SHE TAKING ANY OF THE MONEY AT ALL? THEY ARE RICH ALREADY!!1

If Alaska is flush enough to give several thousands to each resident as a stipend each year, why do they need ANY of the stimulus or can’t Palin (like her daughters) ever say no?

Anyone with the brain and common sense of a slaughtered turkey would take the education money, and tailor their state’s legislation to ensure it did not create a long term unstainable mandate. Guess they don’t need any new school buildings in AK. The Wasilla Winker strikes again.

Palin is obviously a lot more in tune with this country and the present administration. There is a point in time this money runs out and then you boneheads would be screaming about them canceling the programs that are in place. If only some of you people would put this in the proper perspective rather than degrade good citizens of the good ole US of A.

She is completely correct to reject a portion of the federal money! Her statement is perfect. She rejects the Obamamania expensive expansion of the national government and for that, everyone in the US should applaud her. Spend on real stimulus, reject pork!
Posted by: Wendell | March 19, 2009, 8:01 pm 8:01 pm
Why did she turn down education money?
Maybe she didn’t read that part of the bill, you know how she feels about reading. If it doesn’t have a designer label and is paid for by ordinary Americans, she can’t see it. After all, it’s not like seeing Russia from her house or anything.
Posted by: JR | March 19, 2009, 8:01 pm 8:01 pm
Pay attention people. The ARRA is controlled by the Executive Branch. This is Federally controlled money to establish a stronger Federal strangle hold on the United States. Once the Federal government gets a strangle hold in education our children will be the biggest morons in the world. Education will collapse when that money runs out. Every Governor that is fighting this is actually doing education a favor in the long run. I saw a bumper sticker on a car that says, “Education cuts never heal.” Federally controlled education will slice our children and they will never heal. No, it isn’t just education. These Federally Executive Branch controlled funds will strangle all Americans. There will no longer be a United States as States will be under complete control of the Federal Government. Returning to the children, do you remember “No Child Left Behind?” No child was left behind in the training of ignorance and education cuts. It doesn’t matter if it is Republican or Democrat, Bush or Obama, these elites have agendas and a Federally controlled education system will bankrupt and collapse the education system in two years. I support every Governor that stands tall and takes the flak to protect their constituents from a disaster that will completely strip a State of all Rights.

Liberal can’t understand controlled spending, Look at Michigan, 530 million to their school, they can’t account for 50 million they already got. Still 70% drop out rate, MONEY DOESN’T CURE STUPIDITY . She has an 84% approval rating, go Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R). You all wait in till the liberal government suspend deportation of illegal’s, watch how well our school are run then

She knows the legislature will take the funds. Alaska isn’t out anything. And she can claim she refused stimulus funding in her political speeches..knowing full well that Alaska will receive every penny the ARRA offers.

Why take the money when her state doesn’t need it or can’t sustain the programs it will help. Palin did the right thing and could be applauded for her long-term approach to budgeting. I wish more Americans had the same critical thinking skills.
By the way, she didn’t say education will not be funded this year or that it is not important. She said education is a priority and will be funded as it always is.

Leave Palin’s children alone. I am sick of seeing people leaving rude comments about her family. It is more than obvious that she is a loving mother and it shows in how her children carry themselves. I could care less if her daughter has had a child young. I am sure almost everyone one this board had sex at 17. Some people just actually have to deal with the consequences of it.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion of her policies. No one is entitled to hurt those children.

However, to refuse funding for education? Big miss!!! I can see the placards now: “HoneyCakes…err.. Governor Palin! No friend of education!” Her star would have shown much more brightly if she had laid out a plan that would handle the finite objectives and the management of the existing long-term objectives more efficiently. …Only one political point earned this time.

Welfare is a loaded word meant for Black folks…….” Ohhh, I’m scared. I hate you” Republicans use it all the time. Telling the dopes that, but not telling them that since 1995, there is no such thing as Welfare….it’s low income workers….like working on 8.00 per hour supporting there families. And I happens to be Black, raised 3 children, bought 2 homes, and lives within my means. Never had food stamps, or anything pertaining to Welfare. I can cook a mean meal on 5.00 dollars, but can afford to go to my favorite restuarant every once in a while. And I’m not Fat, you idiot. Hate mongers Rush Limbraugh followers. Ignorant at it’s best.

In response to payupmidclass | Mar 19, 2009 8:13:27 PM.. In September 2008 her approval rating had dropped to 68%. Where did you see that it had climbed up to 84%?……….. On another note, when the dividend checks go away in the next few years, it will not be because she is “doing away” with them, it will be due to the fact that The Alaska Permanent Fund has suffered huge losses, not only with the drop in oil prices, but in the stock market as well. It is true that she is not thinking of her State and is putting her political aspirations first because this state could most definitely use help in the area of funding education.

Education begins at home and throwing more of OUR taxes at a failing system is not the answer. If half you people on here bashing Palin would actually quit listening to the really dumb media and find out her record and what she stands for, you may just support her.

My main point is:
Palin is ‘posturing’ for a 2012 ‘POTUS run’. It is sad she has to make the citizens of Alaska suffer for her ignorance and ego.
But then, she can’t control her own children, how can she handle the largest land sized state in the Union?
Posted by: colorado_hightech | March 19, 2009, 9:58 pm 9:58 pm
Why would Palin want to take education money? Educate someone and they grow up to be a Democrat. Not what she’s interested in doing to her state. I bet 99% of the Alaskans who agree with her that Adam & Eve walked around with dinosaurs are voting Republican.

Her children are not our business nor are other people’s children her business. If a woman wants to have an abortion, it is none of the government’s business. If she and her daughter had babies out of wedlock, it is not the government’s business. If she wants to pay for Abstinence-only programs, but not for birth control programs, that’s her right, but maybe she will learn that teens have premarital sex, even (maybe especially) in conservative families, and need protection against giving birth.

We, in Alaska, are not better off since she became Governor. For one, has everyone forgotten about her ethics complaints? Here’s the link to an article in the Juneau Empire. http://www.juneauempire.com/stories/101508/sta_344339180.shtml And these accusations start when she was the Mayor of Wasilla. Also, if Bush hadn’t lied about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, we could have saved billions of dollars, and most importantly, all the lives of our service men and women that were lost because of his misinformation!!

All of you who are criticizing Governor Palin for not accepting all of the stimulus money that was allotted to her state must not have read the entire article. She said that she would not block efforts by local or state officials to secure more federal funding for individual projects. That means local school systems are free to apply for federal funding for their individual projects. Therefore she is not in any way blocking funding for education!
Posted by: DM | March 20, 2009, 1:11 am 1:11 am
DM says: “That means local school systems are free to apply for federal funding for their individual projects.”
So why block funds that the feds have allotted to Alaska for education? Isn’t this the usual “conservative” hypocrisy?

I agree with the DNC….it is nothing but political posturing. She has never given two cents about our State except, maybe, for the Anchorage/Wasilla area. I think it will all be for naught as the Republican Party has other candidates that are way more qualified and willing to run in 2012.
Posted by: akskimo | March 20, 2009, 2:29 am 2:29 am
Good lord…
I believe the article said the portion she declined was for the National Endowment for the Arts…
Yes, all conservatives are “ignorant,” “morons,” “hateful,” “racist,” and so on….yup, the democrats are really the party that accepts everyone…unless you have opposing views. Then they will call you stupid no matter what you say.
I’m not a Republican…I’m an educated fiscally conservative, socially liberal independent. The fiscal conservatism far outweighs the social liberalism; I see no point in funding underperforming public schools (although I will gladly do it) when better private schools are available. My son will go to private school (only real reason he was baptized as Catholic) for that reason.
I guess my point is this: why would you want your kid to go to a public school if you can send them to a private school that pays its teachers more, has better learning materials, equipment, and graduation rates? Public education on a wide scale seems to have failed.

doug: Officials of every one of those items that you listed are free to apply for the federal stimulus funds that she turned down. The funds are still there and earmarked for the state of Alaska! If you had read the article you would have known Governor Palin DID NOT block local or state officials from applying for the funds that she turned down for their individual projects! The money is still there if they want it! They just have to apply for it themselves individually!

Hi DM, I understand your point that she has not really “blocked” Federal money. However, the point I was trying to make is that on one hand Palin refuses money from the stimulus package. But she is OK with getting money from the same source (Federal) for the same purposes (Education, etc). Since it’s ultimately money from the same source for the same State projects, why refuse the money that’s already allocated by the Feds, and then get the money a different way? The only conclusion is that it’s just political posturing. Just BAU for the Republicans.

Hi rightbehind, the real intent behind the objection to a “big government” by “conservatives” is that “big government” hinders crooks who use their money and power to exploit the poor. If Bush hadn’t cut funding on all Federal organizations that were in charge of monitoring companies like AIG, the entire bailout worth trillions of dollars would not be required. It’s OK for “big government” to intrude in your personal choice for abortion, for your sexual preference, etc. and for putting “creation” by the Christian God as an alternative SCIENTIFIC theory against evolution, etc. It’s OK to spend Federal dollars on churches in the guise of “faith based initiatives”. But when it comes to regulation of corporations, they are against “big government”. In GWB’s 8 years, the federal budget was raised from $1.9 Trillion to $3.1 Trillion. That’s a $1.2 Trillion increase. Where were the Republicans for 8 years? They hounded Clinton for 8 years to reduce expenditure, but when GWB was President, he was literally someone who had a direct phone connection to Jesus. Now another Democrat is the President, it’s back being against “big government”, etc. etc. This is just so sickening. Their real God is Money.

Palin is getting more air time than any other governor, wonder why? Her time is spent on AK, not only that she does not make fun of the special Olympics. Its no wonder that her choices of what she takes from the Fed, Gov. may not make scense to some. She understands the long term fall out of taking money that will run out in two years. No one can see the future but we can give a real good guess. Why hire teachers just to fire them in two years? Doesn’t make scense to me. Is this okay now ABC?

How come Republicans are all for cutting taxes? Why did they not cut property taxes as well? Now when the property market has crashed, all states who rely on property taxes as the main source of revenue are in the red. That’s a good thing according to the Republicans, correct?
Posted by: Regence | March 20, 2009, 11:07 am 11:07 am
Hi Russ. So it’s OK for California (run by a Republican Governor) to take all the money, but it’s not OK for Alaska? How many Republican Governors declined any portion of the stimulus money? Oh, I know: all those who are in the running for the Presidential polls in 2012. Just a “coincidence”, right? Amazing.

The Republican “whack job”, Moose Barbie strikes again! Just because Palin can bilk the tax payer to support herself and her family, including her “abstinance only”, out-of-wedlock, teen-mother, love grandchild, doesn’t mean working folks get the same chance. How brave these extremist, lunatic fringe Republican ideologues are….asking others to sacrafice while they rip-off the poor, working tax payer. The citizens who elected these Republican hypocrites get exactly what they deserve. Unfortunately, the poor folks who didn’t vote for these clowns suffer innocently. Palin is irrelavant unless she runs for and wins the presidency in 2012 or later. In the meantime here’s a tip for the republicans. Think up a catchy name. Many conservative democrats are known as Blue Dog Democrats. Maybe we should call you The Sour Grapes Republicans. Or perhaps just the Repugnicans. Just a thought.

I’m heartened to see all the concern for deficit spending and national debt. However every president for 3 decades has signed budgets resulting in annual deficits and increased debt, with the exception Bill Clinton in his final years. Regan nearly tripled the debt, and Bush jr. doubled it. I suspect the loudest complainers on this topic today were not supporters of Clinton, and did in fact Regan and Bush. How about supporting a principle instead of a party?

I am from Alaska and yes we have received a lot of funding from the feds, in return half of our land is locked up and the price we pay for materials or fuel here is higher than you would expect. I do not personally have a problem with Palin rejecting some of the money but her motives are a little suspect.
As far as her fiscal conservatism is concerned the jury is still out but she is a real step up from the last Governor.
I identify myself also as a liberal with fiscal conservative leanings and I am troubled by the amount of spending I see. I hope that in the long run it comes out to our benefit and at least it is being spent in our own country. Remember everyone it was not very long ago that a bridge just collapsed due no real maintenance…

Gotta love this line:
“Other GOP governors such as Rick Perry of Texas, Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and Haley Barbour of Mississippi have announced they will reject stimulus funds intended to expand state unemployment benefits.”
This is the generosity of the GOP? Millions of Americans thrown out of work and yet, somehow, unemployment benefits are considered pork spending.
Save the billionaires and screw the poor, or else it’s class warfare…Riiiight.

I think most of society has decided to move beyond the hunter gatherer state. On this education at home name one home educated person that has ever contributed anything to science, medicine, or technology.

How about these, to name a few?
Ansel Adams, Ludwig van Beethoven, W. A. Mozart, T.A. Edison (to be fair, he actually had 3 months of public schooling before his mother home schooled him)

I applaud at Sarah for taking what money they need and turning down funds that will cost them more in the long run later.
What is the point of taking funds that may not be available later and having to cut other programs later to offset the losses!
They are not in a deficit like other states……you should be thanking her for not wasting your tax dollars!
Like a Typical Dem logic just throw other peoples money at the problem…not thinking about what it is paying for!!

I have a bit of news that’s going to just burn you liberal Sarah Palin haters up! Newsmax magazine reported yesterday that Sarah Palin’s popularity rating in Alaska is 61.3%! Their source is Hays Research Group. Her negative rating is 32.7% with 6% undecided! Her highest rating was 89% in May 2007 about 15 months before she was named McCain’s running mate. However, 61.3% is still a great rating! Nearly twice as many people approve of her than disapprove!

When you speak of “don’t believe in school” you are the skillet calling the pot black! You need to go back to school yourself!

not in Rush or Sarah Palin.May be you never become teenager parents. Nobody can control teenager’s ways. What do think that Obama’s mom was pregrent Obama when she was 18 years old, then she gave birth Obama when she was 19 under un-marriage. Later, they got marry. Lord, I sure hope President Obama gets his educational programs under way as soon as possible. They are obviously long over due. As to Palin rejecting $288 million of the stimulus plan, much of which was destined for educational programs for special needs and economically disadvantaged children, doesn’t this seem rather disingenuous from one who accepted $398 million for a “Bridge to Nowhere”, even though it wasn’t used for the bridge, all while she heaps scorn upon a President for an unintentional parody regarding special olympic kids, meant to focus on his lack of bowling prowess.

Hi devilkev:
You know very well that Republicans are experts at pulling wool over the country’s eyes. They assume, and rightly so, that nearly half of the country are dumb and emotional about any smokescreen they throw out there. A few years ago, Bush won on “moral values”. What moral values did he exhibit. He promised to be “partisan”, and turned out to actually be the most partisan person in History. Then it was focusing on “speed boats”, etc. to challenge the very patriotism of an incredibly brave patriot. They used rumors of McCain having an illegitimate “black” child, and destroyed his campaign – and he was a Republican. Now McCain promises to help Obama, and starts fighting him immediately on the very programs on which Obama won the Presidency. Is he so dumb that he did not know what Obama would be doing? I don’t think so. Even so, he says he is going to cooperate with Obama. Why? He is just another Republican liar.
Now that they don’t have anything much to do because of the vote of the American people, they can only focus on being ornery by saying “NO”, and by diverting those dumb Americans’ minds to petty issues like bowling, etc. What Rush says that he wants Obama to fail is just the not-so-secret wish of right wing bigots who continue to blindly follow the party goal of making the rich richer and exploiting the poor.

gl: Not necessarily! I happen to be a white woman, not a man, and I would vote for her! I agree with her policies and I’m also a born again Christian and a Pentecostal. And, as all of my friends would tell you, I am not in any way racist and I don’t believe Sarah Palin is either! She has never said one word against any other race that I’ve heard! I also want to remind you that her husband Todd is half Eskimo! If she were racist she wouldn’t be married to someone of another race! And another thing, I am not alone! I happen to know that there are many, many people, both men and women, from all races including black, who would vote for her!

What did Palin mean by “real America”?
Posted by: Regence | March 22, 2009, 6:07 am 6:07 am
Regence: I have no idea what you sre talking about by “What did Palin mean by “real America”? I haven’t heard her use that term and you won’t find it in this article.
There are a few things that you said to devilkev that I’m going to address though!
First of all you said that George Bush won on moral values and then you asked what moral values did he exhibit. I admit he lived a wild life when he was young and he had a drinking problem, but did you ever hear of him having an affair while he was in office? Did you ever hear of him having sex with another woman right in the oval office? No, you did not! As far as any of us know while he was in office the only woman in his life was his wife Laura! Can you say the same about Bill Clinton? No, you can’t! And as for George Bush’s drinking problem, the only thing that he ever drank when he was in office was an occasional glass of wine or champaign at formal dinners! I have to say that while he was in office George Bush’s moral character was as good as any president that we’ve ever had including the present one! I remind you that Obama had his wild days when he was younger too, especially when was in college! He’s admitted to smoking pot and drinking when he was in college!
And about John McCain, you are wrong about him too! The only one who ruined John McCain’s campaign was John McCain. He ruined his campaign by running a half-hearted campaign and by not using all of the tools available to him to win. Also his speeches were too vague. He never did state exactly what his platform was and he never did say exactly how he was going to fix this country’s problems if he were elected. He also should have been more direct and should have been more aggressive in the debates. Instead he just seemed like a sick old man and didn’t even give direct answers. I voted for John McCain because I thought he was the lesser of the two evils. I was not really happy with any of the candidates who ran last year! I wouldn’t have voted for McCain if it hadn’t been for Palin! She’s one of the main reasons that I voted for him, that and the fact that I absolutely refuse to vote for someone who’s pro-choice! I also didn’t like Obama’s ideas about how to fix our economy (and I still don’t) and I didn’t like his stand on the war issues. However, I think a lot of people are like me. Sarah Palin is one of the main reasons that John McCain got as many votes as he did. he wouldn’t have received nearly as many without her! Some say that she hurt his campaign but I don’t think so! She helped him! His campaign was going nowhere until he chose her as his running mate! One of his main mistakes was trying to control her, though. For the first month or so after the conventions she was told what she could and could not say. He should have turned her loose and let her attack and say what she wanted to say! That was a big mistake on his part!
No, it was John McCain’s own fault that he lost the campaign! No one else is to blame!
And about the petty issues as you called them, I know it’s just a small thing but I wish Obama would spend less time on the basketball court and less time going on late night talk shows and more time in the oval office doing the job that he was elected to do! He’s not getting paid to play basketball or go on late night talk shows!

Go to the Alaska state site to see how much Palin’s state budget added to the education budget. Quite a lot! Then, remember that Mark is a Dem. Enough said. No Governor does his or her state a service by accepting Federal dollars to develop programs which cannot be sustained unless State taxes are increased to maintain them. Mark needs to consider the children! Bottom line is that the babies of today will be paying off the bill for the things he wants. And they will be paying a lot of money! There are needs and wants. Now is the time to be grown up and focus on the needs. The price is too high to get everything you want. Of course, Mark won’t be paying for what he wants to spend today since it will take @ 30 years or more to do so and he won’t be making the money to pay taxes that will do so. Palin is right. You have to make hard choices. She still has @ 68% positive rating among Alaskans. Obama is foolishly spending and having more money printed which will increase inflation. He is on a path to destroy our economy, capitalism, our future, etc. He was a member of the New Party in the 1990′s – a Socialist party which wanted everyone to share alike. Sorry – if he wanted to go Socialist – he shouldn’t have run for president of the US. There are many countries who are socialistic – who are suffering – who would love to have him – and his friends – move there. Leave us in America alone. WE are a Democracy. We have the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution that American throughout history have died to protect. That he wants to destroy this is horrendous. Hopefully the American public can make their voices heard through the Tea Parties being held all over America. Hopefully, the media will cover them – but they have not done so yet.
Palin is different than Obama in that she has executive experience running a State. He has had nothing and we are suffering from his slow learning curve.

I will never understand people that support Palin. Regardless of whether or not you are (R)or(D). She is a selfish power hungry politician who will steam roll any one that is in her way of getting her what she wants. You ‘Palin’ supporters need to do your homework and take a closer look at her track record. She has done some really horrid things not the least of which is sueing the Bush Administration for allowing Polar Bears to be placed on the endangred list. All because it threaten her precious oil development proccess. I won’t even get into her actions that she has taken in recent years against other wildlife, most particularly wolves. For everyone out there who doesn’t give a crap about such trivial stuff as wildlife and the environment you should really try and remember that we only have one planet and that jeopardizing and depleting the
one we have is getting us nowhere. Instead of her greedy meglomanical butt worrying so much about oil maybe she should come to the twenty-first century and realize that the only way we will have a sustainable future on this Earth is if we focus on alternate sources of energy and transportation. That especially goes for all you die hard ‘Palin Lovers’. I do realize that she’s much more worried about how much money oil makes her. You should realize it too. Grow up and stop arguing with everyone and labeling them ‘liberals’ just because they have common sense. Also, as for the 2012 Election…wouldn’t you idiots prefer to have a president who knows Africa is a continent? Just wondering.

Here is the link to the CNN where Palin apologizes for her “real America” and “pro-American areas of this “: http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/10/21/palin.sitroom/index.html
“We believe that the best of America is in these small towns that we get to visit, and in these wonderful little pockets of what I call the real America, being here with all of you hard-working, very patriotic, very pro-America areas of this great nation”. Note her usage of “we”. Obviously she speaks for the entire right-wing religious bigoted “real” Americans. She was speaking at a fully-White town. But of course, per you, this is not racism.
The issue of “moral values” goes well beyond sex and drugs. So it’s OK to make someone the President who took drugs and was a confirmed alcoholic? While it’s OK to criticize Clinton for an off-the-cuff “didn’t inhale” comment? What about the outing of a real American CIA agent? Lying to real Americans and getting us to an expensive (in terms of the lives of our kids and many innocent “collateral” lives in Iraq)? Lying about there being no recession, but admitting in late 2008 that there “has been” a recession since the end of 2007? Do you know how many people would have had a better understanding and would have taken steps to protect their life savings in 2007 itself? But obviously, all his cronies knew about this and probably made Billions by shorting, etc. “Moral Values”, indeed! What about him appointing a board member on the FDA who actually advocates reading the Bible as a cure for PMS? Another crony as the head of FEMA? I could fill up almost an entire book with a list. No-bid contracts to Haliburton? Blackwater?
So now you blame the loser, John McCain? Wasn’t he chosen by the Republicans as their candidate? Why don’t Republicans blame themselves instead of the usual “blame game” and negativism that at the heart of each of the “real Americans”? So you think that saying what she wanted to say was a good thing? She made so many stupid blunders like peeping into Russia, etc. that Republicans should be thankful that she was restrained and treated like the real idiot that she appears to be! The last thing we need in this country is another idiot who says things like “is our childrens learning”.
Yes, Obama shouldn’t play basketball. I am sure he also shouldn’t spend time with his daughters, his wife, etc. The moment someone becomes the President of the richest and the most powerful country in the world, he or she should renounce their family, and live like a celibate monk to stop being distracted. But of course, it was quite OK for some other people to take off from Washington and spend their time in their ranch in Waco, TX for literally months at a time. Because they are “real Americans”, and Waco is one of the most “hard-working, very patriotic, very pro-America areas of this great nation”.
Posted by: Regence | March 23, 2009, 7:30 pm 7:30 pm
Regence: At least she apologized in person and didn’t use a spokesman like Obama did! It is also obvious to everyone but you that when she said we she meant herself and her family and the McCain campaign team and that’s all! And by “real Americans” she meant middle class blue collar working Americans. The people who work in the factories, drive the buses, run heavy machinery, etc. all across America. If you didn’t have such a chip on your shoulder and if you didn’t think every white person is racist you would know that! You are reading much more into what she said than what she actually said!
Incidentally, I am a blue collar worker and so were my parents before me! My father (who was a staunch Roosevelt era DEMOCRAT) ran heavy machinery for a living and my mother worked in cafe’s and as an aide in our local nursing home. Yes, I am also white but I am anything but rich! My color has nothing to do with it. Sarah was talking about all middle class blue collar workers no matter what their color or race! If you weren’t such a racist yourself and if you didn’t hate white people so much you would know that!
And about making someone president who took drugs and was an alchoholic I remind you again that Barack Obama also smoked pot and drank alchohol in college! You can’t criticize George Bush for that without criticizing your beloved Obama too! No, that doesn’t make it ok but they both did it and you know it! I didn’t say anything about Clinton’s remark about not inhaling but now that you mention it, he smoked pot in college too! That’s not all he did! He is famous for his escapades with other women! Remember Monica Lewinsky? She was just one in a list of many “other” women that he had and probably still has!
And another thing, what are you going to say about the thousands of troops that Obama is sending to Afghanistan next month, many of whom won’t live to come home? Bush isn’t sending them, Obama is! And what about the horrendous debt that Obama is getting our country in? He is getting us into so much debt that it will take hundreds of years to get out of it if we ever do!
Also yes I do blame John McCain for his loss because the plain fact is it is his fault that he lost! It is no one else’s! He ran a half-hearted campaign! He didn’t want to win badly enough! He refused to use all of the tools at his disposal to win and he wasn’t nearly aggressive enough! He also allowed too much in-fighting in his campaign and that made him look bad too. He should also have put a quick stop to the smear campaign that the media launched against his running mate and he didn’t do that either. That was a huge mistake! In the debates he just seemed like a senile, sick old man who couldn’t even give straight or direct answers. He should have been much more aggressive and not nearly so vague!
Sure, Sarah Palin has made some mistakes, huge ones! However, what she said about the stimulus funds was not one of them! Also what she said in the speech that you mentioned above was not one of them! There is absolutely nothing racist in that speech except what you have made up in your demented racist little mind! You have added words meanings that are simply not there! And another thing, you CAN see Russia from an island off the coast of Alaska! She DID NOT say that she could see it from her house!
I didn’t say that Obama shouldn’t spend time with his family. Of course he should spend time with his family but I do think he spends too much time playing basketball and going on late night talk shows. I won’t apologize for that statement! And maybe George Bush did spend too much time on his ranch but I remind you that they have phones and computers in Texas, too! He was never unreachable or out of touch when he was in Texas! In case of emergency he would have been back in Washington in just a few hours.
And about your remark about Waco, Texas, I guess you don’t know that the Waco – Killeen area is home to one of the largest millitary bases in the United States! Ft. Hood, Texas! You can’t get any more American or patriotic than that!

Wow. So real Americans are those who work in blue-collar jobs or those who work in the US military? Most of the illegals in the US are blue collar workers. So we must encourage them, right? I wonder whether you would classify Cindy Sheehan as a real American and patriot. After all, she did encourage her son to join the US Military.
The comment “You can’t get any more American or patriotic than that!” smacks of the Republican strategy of labeling anyone that does not agree with them to be not “real Americans” and “patriotic”. Samuel Jackson had so correctly pointed out (in 1775) that “patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.”
Because you are a white blue-collar right-wing bigot, you are exactly what Mao meant by “Running Dogs of Capitalism”. Now, you can label me to be Un-American and unpatriotic because I quote from a radical Communist tyrant, but just because one reads many books, one does not agree with them. However, this may be hard for you to understand because of your bigotry. Also, how come Bush borrowed so heavily from Communist China after being left with a huge surplus by Clinton?
The very fact that you criticize our President for playing basketball occasionally in the White House, shows how petty you really are. It’s probably difficult for you to understand that he has people right there who would inform him if there is some immediate crisis that needs his personal attention. In any case, regardless of where the President is, he can be reached instantly. Not sure if you have heard about cell phones, portable communication devices, text messaging, etc? Also, what’s the use of immediate contact when the President is an idiot? I mean “Katrina”, “9/11″, etc.
Troop increases in Afghanistan have to be done because for the last 8 years, we have been fighting in Iraq, which diverted troops from Afghanistan and thus let the conditions in Afghanistan to deteriorate. After the entire world knowing that most of the terrorists are holed up in Pakistan, we actually attacked Iraq instead of dealing with Pakistan. In fact we spend billions on Pakistan every year. For example, we reward Pakistan with $5 Billion for their counter terrorism “efforts” http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/12/24/asia/24military.php, while Pakistan actively supports the terrorists, as seen with the recent Mumbai attack in which Americans and Jews were specifically targeted. Also, this is what really happens with our tax dollars: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/feb/28/pakistan.usa

Regence: I don’t think there’s any point in continuing any comments with you because neither of us is going to change. You are a racist and a bigot and you have the nerve to call me a racist and a bigot. I think the world can see from reading your comments who the real racist and bigot is and it’s not me! You are so filled with hate for the white race that you can’t see the truth and you’re not going to change.
As for the illegals, maybe they shouldn’t be encouraged but they should be treated like human beings. They should not be be beaten or harmed. I also think that if they have a job and they act like decent people and stay out of trouble and were not criminals in their native land, they should be allowed to stay here if they get a green card. The government should also make it easier for them to get a green card. I don’t think the government’s policy of just hauling them back to Mexico is working. That is not the answer. Neither is building a fence along the Mexican border. I do think, though, that there should be some way of keeping the Mexican and the Cuban criminals and all of the other foreign criminals out of this country but, like you, I don’t know what it is. There should also be some way of keeping the drugs out of this country, too, but I don’t have the answer for that either any more than you do!
As for Cindy Sheehan, I don’t know as much about her as you seem to. All I know about her is that her son was killed in Iraq and she protests the Iraq war and President Bush. I did not know that she encouraged her son to enlist. That doesn’t make sense to me. She should have known that he would be sent to Iraq. Why does she blame George Bush for his death if she encouraged her son to enlist? The one who really is to blame is the woman who’s image she sees in the mirror every morning!
However, I don’t agree with her about the war or George Bush but, yes she is an American even if I don’t agree with her. The constitution gives her freedom of speech and the right to protest as long as she stays within the laws of our country. I don’t have to agree with her and the constitution gives me the same rights that she has. I have the right to disagree just as I have the right to disagree with you and you with me!
By my comment “you can’t get any more American or patriotic than that” I simply meant that you can’t get any more American or patriotic than a millitary base! That is all I meant! It is clear that you are very good at reading more into what people say than what they actually say. You look for some kind of hidden meaning and you make up things in your demented little hate filled, racist, bigoted mind. Guess what, most of the time there is no hidden meaning! Most people are like me, they say exactly what they mean! Anyone who knows me knows that I say exactly what I mean! If I had meant to say that anyone who doesn’t agree with me isn’t a real American I would have said so but that isn’t what I said and that is not what I believe!
It is hard for you to believe, too, but George Bush had people who would have notified him if something needed his immediate attention, too, even if he were at his ranch. They have cell phones in Texas, too, and although I could be mistaken, I think he had one! Cell phones can be easily carried in a pocket even when you’re on a horse in the middle of a ranch! Crawford, Texas is not in some third world country as you seem to think! They have modern conveniences there, too!
Also, in case you’ve forgotten, when President Bush was in Texas he was not there alone. He traveled with a whole entourage of people, secret service agents, aides, etc. people who traveled with him wherever he went. No president, not even Obama, travels alone. They all have people who protect them and aides who will notify them if there is an emergency.
Since I have already mentioned cell phones, you know now that I know about them. In fact I have one. You liberals are not the only ones who use cell phones! We conservative republicans use them too! We also use computers. We are not as technically challenged as you seem to think!
I know that President Bush did not act as quickly as he should have during the Katrina disaster. He should have responded much sooner than he did and he made many other mistakes during that time. However, I disagree with you about 9/11! I don’t think anyone could have handled that any better than he did! I know that there was much chatter on the internet before 9/11 warning that something was about to happen but there was also chatter about it all the way back to the Clinton administration! It had gone on so long that no one took it seriously. 9/11 came as a surprise attack that no one saw coming and, therefore, couldn’t have been handled any better than it was handled. I was very proud of President Bush in the days immediately following the 9/11 attack! He kept the nation calm when everyone was in panic mode because we didn’t know what was going to happen next! President Bush’s only mistake during that time was that he listened to bad intelligence and was distracted from the goal that he should have concentrated on, that was finding and rooting out Osama Bin Laden and Al Queda!
I asked you what you thought about President Obama sending thousands of troops to Afghanistan next month. You gave me your answer. I wonder though, will you feel the same way about him if he hasn’t ended the war in Afghanistan by the time his administration is over? If in four or eight years troops are still being killed there will you still support him?
Posted by: DM | March 25, 2009, 4:05 am 4:05 am
Regence: I want to add that in four or eight years if the war in Afghanistan is still going on I don’t think George Bush can still be blamed for it because he’s not the one in office and he’s no longer the commander-in-chief!

You are very irrational. First, you blame Obama for playing basketball, as if a President is evil because he plays basketball for recreation for a few hours a week. Then you justify Bush being away in Waco for months at a time because he has telephones in Waco. When I point out that Obama is connected, etc. via communication devices, you now say that every President is connected. Make up your blue-collar mind (assuming that you have one).
I have no quarrel with the war in Afghanistan, because that’s a sanctuary that the Al Queda used to attack our country. Contrary to your “liberal” label, I do not fit your typical stereotyping right-wing fanatical labels. I love the way we attacked Afghanistan. But we had an idiot who led us to an unnecessary and expensive war in Iraq (based on lies) and diverted our attention from where we should have really focused our resources: Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Your comment about illegals is hilarious. I strongly oppose appeasing these illegals to buy Latin votes. It is disgusting. Every sovereign nation has a right to build fences, walls, etc, so long as these are constructed on our own soil. How can any other country (like Mexico) actually object to a fence being built by the US on US soil? Disgusting! While there are thousands of immigrants who come to the US every year after completing all formalities that includes a thorough FBI check, allowing illegals to come in by tunneling under the border without any checks is just plain stupid. If everyone has to obey the law in the US, then leaving such a big hole in our security that allows literally millions of illegals to walk across unchecked is criminal.
As far as Republicans being computer illiterate are concerned, let me remind you that the richest man in the world is a computer geek, and a Republican. Most 30+ years old people in the computer industry tend to be Republicans. Please don’t think that because you are personally insecure about your own lack of literacy, all Republicans are like you.
What I remember from 9/11 is that Bush was in some elementary school in Florida, and he really didn’t get to Washington until after a few days.
I don’t think Obama has ever made the promise that he will withdraw troops from Afghanistan. His promise was for Iraq, and he is sticking to it. In fact he promised to send more troops to Afghanistan, during his campaign.
No, Bush can only be blamed for his 8 years. Obama will undoubtedly judged by what he does to not only fix the problems that Obama has inherited from the idiot, but other problems that have been ignored by the “NO” party.

Regence: I don’t blame Obama for playing basketball but I think he should play a little less of it and spend a little more time in the oval office doing the job that he was elected to do. I am not stupid. I know that he has to get away from it occasionally, but I think he gets away a little too often in my opinion. I have a right to my opinion just as you have a right to yours about George W. Bush.
And about the war in Afghanistan. I wonder would you feel the same about it if you had a friend or loved one who was about to be sent there? I doubt it! When a friend or loved one of yours is about to be sent to war you will have a whole new perspective on that war! You might not have a quarrel with the war in Afghanistan right now but how would you feel about it if you had a friend or brother or sister about to be sent there? Or, God forbid, someone killed there? I personally am against any war if there is some way that they can be prevented. However, I also know that there are times when war can’t be prevented and there is no other choice. That doesn’t make me happy about it though!
You are hilarious and an idiot, too, if you think a fence between the US and Mexico is going to keep out the illegals! Yes, the US has a right to build it but it is a big expense for nothing! It isn’t working! The illegals tunnel under it and just climb right over it at night! It isn’t keeping them out! There simply has to be another way to handle the problem!
My comment about Republicans being computer literate was because you seem to think that you liberal Democrats are the only ones who know anything about computers and cell phones. I know for a fact that you are wrong about that! We Republicans use them as much as you do and I am anything but insecure about my literacy but I think you must be insecure about yours! Small pre-school children use computers now! Therefore, you shouldn’t feel that just because you can use a computer or cell phone that you are doing something extraordinary! Most three or four year old children in the United States are computer and cell phone literate now!
Obama will also be judged by the stupid mistakes that he makes! He has already made some! One of them is pushing his stimulus package through congress so fast that he didn’t allow most congressmen time to read the 1000 page package. Many congressmen have already said that they regret signing it before they took the time to read it because they are finding that there is much pork in it that they didn’t know about. They simply signed it because the President and Ted Kennedy and Nancy Pelosi told them to sign it and they didn’t want to go against them. They went along with the crowd because they knew that if they didn’t sign it there would be repercussions. They would have trouble getting their own bills passed and getting funds for projects in their own districts.
That is not the only mistake Obama will make. He’ll make more in the years to come and he’ll be judged for them!

Regence: There is one more mistake that Obama has made that I failed to mention. That is the releasing of the prisoners in Guantanamo Bay. That is a serious mistake because those prisoners will just join right back with Al Queda and Osama Bin Laden and come right back to attack us! When (and notice I didn’t say if) that happens Barack Obama will be to blame for it and he will have to live with that on his conscience!
