The automakers should want to go through bankruptcy then they will be able to reorganize and restructure their companies successfully and become competitive for the long term. It can't be that difficult to determine what parts of the company are profitable and what parts of the company are a money pit.

Well, the UAW will soon get it where they deserve it. Too many years of playing each of the big three against each other and blackmailing the industry into a non-competitive position. Funny that a Democrat President will be the one weilding the ax, but as he gets reality lessons, this will be his biggest. Yes, there's plenty of blame to go around, and not enough money o paper it all over. Don't accuse me of supporting the myopic big three. Chapter 11, ready or not, for GM, and Fiat gets Daimler's stepchild. But there are larger lessons to be learned by us all. First, more save-to-buy and less borrow-to-buy. Second, things like urban sprawl that push us into big cars will be reversed. Third, my auto is bigger than yours as an ego trip should, and will, soon be cause not for envy but for scorn. None of these can be reversed in a year or two, but they've got to happen.

Bill from Canada: you are mistaken. America is not protecting the world and hardly cares about such a thing. America, with its 800 foreign military bases (ask Ron Paul) is about controlling the world to protect its financial interests. That is, those interests of Wall Street. We support dictators who care not about democracy, but rather we like those who support cheap labor to drive profits for corporations higher. Dont believe me? Then read about it from the words of one of the most decorated US military veterans ever: Smedley Butler and his book, War is a Raquet. Two COngressional medals of honor is credibility.

The majority of we Canadians (in my humble opinion) just sit back and laugh at America's arrogance. Always having to be number one, protecting the world. In the meantime, if you weren't wasting trillions of dollars on a war you had no business entering in the first place, thanks to your gunslinging Bush, you wouldn't be faltering economically in the U.S. Yes, Canada upholds the NAFTA agreement, but is also participating because of our brown-nosing Prime Minister Stephen Harper(There, I actually said his name, unlike your American media that just call him the "Prime Minister". Anyway, Spend your money at home. By my estimation, the cost of the war thus far would have eradicated all mortgage forclosures, afforded Americans a "free" healthcare system like we have in Canada, and bailed out your auto industry (which is a farce) This industry is years behind the foreign automakers like Toyota,Volkswagen and Honda. Thank you for letting me vent!

tillyerkt: If government should take a minimalist approach in business, then the big Wall Street companies should stop begging Congress and lobbying them for endless tax breaks, sweat heart deals on leases, etc, etc. Big business makes big money when it has big influence. They would never want to be divorced from the government.

bmm. The bankers want the auto companies as much as Warren BUffet wants to invest in AIG. The rats jump off the ship when it is going down.

I can believe that anybody would have the#### to be a Reagan fan. Reagan was the worst. Let's review some of his gems:
1. waved the white flag in Lebanon. Quit
2. Amnesty for 3 million illegals. Very conservative.
3. flip flopped on abortion from governor to President.
4. Gave us deficit spending on steroids. Great for a
fiscal conservative.
5. Raised taxes multiple times. Check out 1982.
6. Iran Contra. Broke the law and financed two sides of a war at the same time. Besides the immorality, he supported Hussein. How did that work out? We're still dealing with it.
Oh, the taking down of the Wall is what made him so great? Several others claim the same thing, including Thatcher etc. Russia fell on its own sword and the timing was in reagan's favor just like the internet was on Gore's watch.
Reagan is one of the worst presidents of all time, btu we saw that Bush II beat him. Once Obama spends us into oblivion, then he can take the mantle from Bush.

taxpayer: In France, the government is afraid of the people. In the USA, the people are afraid of the government. People have to work, right? But they are not willing to sacrifice anything. They have to to work in France too, but they seem to have alot of time to protest, especially when they are supposed to be working. We dont see that in America and yes, our founding fathers would be very disappointed.
The real, sad problem is that people on the so-called right are pointing fingers at the so-called left and vice versa. The problem is that we have a total structural flaw with Congress etc. They take money from lobbyists and call it free speech, when it is really bribery. They eat pork (both sides) and call it necessary for their states. Congress is totally out of control

Anybody who says that the Dems are corrupt and the GOP is not, is a fool. Anybody who says that the GOP is corrupt, but the Dems are not, is also a fool of equal magnitude. With very few exceptions, they are two sides of the same coin. They preach fiscal responsibility, but fail to do anything that resembles it. Congress is a totally corrupt institution and it shows. They are obviously ran by Wall Street. We are the United States of Wall Street.
At least the democrats tax and spend; that is far more responsible than borrowing. But they need to quit spending. Our dollar is getting trashed. Fallugn currency = falling country.
