Steele: ‘I Am Pro-Life’
ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: RNC Chairman Michael Steele is doing damage control in the wake of a magazine interview where he appeared to voice support for abortion rights, in the latest setback for a party leader who may face an internal fight to keep his job. In a wide-ranging interview with GQ, Steele called abortion an “individual choice,” in the context of his birth mother’s decision to choose to deliver him and put him up for adoption. “I see the power of life in that — I mean, and the power of choice! The thing to keep in mind about it . . . Uh, you know, I think as a country we get off on these misguided conversations that throw around terms that really misrepresent truth,” Steele said. “The choice issue cuts two ways. You can choose life, or you can choose abortion. You know, my mother chose life. So, you know, I think the power of the argument of choice boils down to stating a case for one or the other,” he said. He was then asked if he thinks “women have the right to choose abortion?” Steele: “Yeah. I mean, again, I think that’s an individual choice.” Question: “You do?” Steele: “Yeah. Absolutely.” With the interview getting wide attention in political circles, Steele issued a statement through the RNC this morning, declaring, “I am pro-life, always have been, always will be.” He continued: “I tried to present why I am pro life while recognizing that my mother had a ‘choice’ before deciding to put me up for adoption. I thank her every day for supporting life. The strength of the pro life movement lies in choosing life and sharing the wisdom of that choice with those who face difficult circumstances. They did that for my mother and I am here today because they did.” “In my view Roe vs. Wade was wrongly decided and should be repealed. I realize that there are good people in our party who disagree with me on this issue. But the Republican Party is and will continue to be the party of life. I support our platform and its call for a Human Life Amendment. It is important that we stand up for the defenseless and that we continue to work to change the hearts and minds of our fellow countrymen so that we can welcome all children and protect them under the law.” Elsewhere in the interview, Steele said he does not believe homosexuality is a choice: “Oh, no. I don’t think I’ve ever really subscribed to that view, that you can turn it on and off like a water tap. Um, you know, I think that there’s a whole lot that goes into the makeup of an individual that, uh, you just can’t simply say, oh, like, ‘Tomorrow morning I’m gonna stop being gay.’ It’s like saying, ‘Tomorrow morning I’m gonna stop being black.’ ” A growing chorus of Republicans have begun openly questioning Steele’s leadership, with some arguing that he’s spending too much time expounding on the GOP’s direction — the former Maryland lieutenant governor has been a frequent television commentator — and not enough time building the party’s infrastructure. Political Wire’s Taegan Goddard reported Wednesday that Katon Dawson, the chairman of the South Carolina GOP, is organizing a no-confidence vote on Steele’s leadership, but Dawson is publicly denying that. UPDATE: Tony Perkins, of the Family Research Council, weighed in on the subject in a written statement that’s likely to fuel buzz that Steele is in a fight for his job: "I read the article last night so I am familiar not only with his comments about the life issue but also about the efforts to redefine marriage and ‘mucking’ up the constitution. I expressed my concerns to the chairman earlier this week about previous statements that were very similar in nature. He assured me as chairman his views did not matter and that he would be upholding and promoting the Party platform, which is very clear on these issues. It is very difficult to reconcile the GQ interview with the chairman’s pledge. "Before making further public statements regarding Mr. Steele’s interview and what impact it may have upon social conservative support for the RNC I will give him an opportunity to respond to a message I’ve sent him regarding the matter."

The constant cowing to the far right wing of the Republican party is going to do the Republicans in.
McCain sacrificed his integrity and Maverick status
that drew so many of his to him to placate the extremist in his party and we have witnessed one “leader” after another do the same.
It is okay to be pro-choice. Mr. Steele you can be pro-choice AND pro-life……

The Republican party is no more likely to split than the Democrats are with their disparate views. The Democrats are making a strategic mistake in going too far left too quickly. They presume the a victory over an uninspiring McCain was a vote FOR Obama. It was a vote AGAINST Bush. After elections, Presidents ride a wave for a bit and then lose ground (Gallup has his disapproval rating up to 27% already). As people begin to see how Obama really wants to govern, the Democrats run a serious risk of re-energizing conservative Republicans AND alienating conservative Democratics. I would not be so smug about insulting Limbaugh’s 25 million listeners. They are inclined to vote and you might want some of them come next election.

Let’s face it….had Obama not win the presidency, Steele probably would not be the GOP chair…..
So, how about selecting Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity or Limbaugh as the chair…..
That way, I doubt you will get more minority votes….right?

LMAO… They gave this guy the RNC chair to put a new fresh face on the republican party… Then when he tries to dismiss Rush Limbaugh as the rpeublicna party leader he is forced to back pedal and appologize.
now he tries to make a tweak in the rpeublican view point on abortion, and it is clealry ebing done to attract more fence voters to the republicna ticket becuase they desperately need it, he is forced to appologize agian.
republicans better wake up if they actually beleive making no changes at all is going to strengthen thier party in 2010 elections…

As a long time registered republican voter I am looking for a new party to support as there is no longer one that stand for good old traditonal conservative values like individual freedoms, rights and responsabilites; like states rights and small governments. Ever since the theocrats took over the gop, there is no party lesft that stands for freedom; only two parties for big invasive governements arguing over who has the right to tell everybody else what to do.

We dont need anymore unwed mothers on the dole. We dont need anymore babies born to teenagers. really. We have too many people as it is and I see NO DIFFERENCE between an embryo or the egg adn sperm that we routinely kill. The sperm is alive, struggling to become somebody, no way pal, you die today. who cares??? this embryo, has no cognizance, has no central nervous system, is no more aware of itself than a skill cells, yet yo u want to FORCE girls to develope into a baby that will then most likely (look at the stats) be neglected, on the dole and in jail (look at the stats!) inside of 16 years? Honestly , that isn’t racism it’s just fact. Google it. SEe how kids of unwed mothers do, who supports them. WE dont need it in our society. And i dont think youshould develope a baby assumign it will be healthy and someone elsewill adopt it. What if it turns out to be down syndrome??? will they still adopt it??? NO! you bring into this world the children YOU can support and bring up. Abortion needs to stay legal for our society! I am not for late term abortion, but I have to say, it angers me that anyone births a child when there is so much birht control available and abortion available and yet you STILL do not prevent yourself from becoming someone everyone else has to pick up the peices for, or fall victim to.

A growing number of the base questioning Mr. Steele’s leadership, huh? Well that growing number better realize something. Their personal beliefs concerning this topic have pretty much torn this party apart. The part they do not seem to get is that they do not and will not ever constitute a majority. And that gets the party beat at election time. If they want to continue to be an obstinate, shrill minority, so be it.

Well…. let’s not get carried away here folks… I would remind some that God is Pro-choice… in that he has given people free-will from the begining… but this in no way changes the fact that He is (and I am) adamantly Pro-Life and always will be… There is no room for abortion support… it is an irresponsible and ungodly position… Regarding homosexuality the situation is much the same and it does focus on one’s choice to pursue their private desire regardless or how wrong-minded or biologically illogical they may be. While an individual’s proclivity toward homosexuality as strengthened through environmental factors cannot be discounted it in no way validates this as a sound practice or lifestyle and it therefore is once again a highly irresponsible, intellectually dishonest and societally dangerous position to become a conceptual “enabler” or supporter of such a behavioral error. It is simply a short-circuit of one’s practice of love… fraternal love becoming biologically unsound erotic love regardless of how it is rooted it remains illogical and unsound for societal perpetuation. God loves all of us regardless of our flaws all the same… He says that we are “to die for”.

This so much like what happened to the Dems in the 70′s & 80′s when the far-left was running the party. They would not allow anyone that is pro-life to have a real spot in the party. Now it’s the GOP doing the same thing, only in reverse. Now in the GOP, a pro-choice person is not very welcomed into the GOP as it is being run by the far-right. The GOP will have to learn how, like the Dems did, that you can win elections with a small tent of dittoheads. Americans have historically perfered a center-left and center-right party. Once a party move too far from the middle, they begin to lose elections.

I am pro-life, but I recognize that as a Christian, I cannot impose my beliefs or religion on others. I believe that we can be both pro-life and pro-choice at the same time. The two are not mutually exclusive. For a party that prides itself on being for less Government control and more about individual freedoms, isn’t it hypocritical that the GOP advocates more Government control on individual matters life abortion, and lifestyle choices but conveniently froths at the mouth at the thought of having more Government role in Education and Health care for people that are actually alive and well (not to say that fetuses aren’t alive too, far from it!).

I find the republican cry of “prolife” to be shallow and incomplete. Being prolife means you support polices and norms that protect life from the womb to the grave-which the republican party certainly does not. In addition to fighting for the unborn, one who is prolife will also fight to protect the poor children in our country, foster youth, the destitute & homeless in our country, the elderly in our country and all else who often lack the power to fight for themeselves. I find it laughable that once you’re born, the republican party ceases to find value in your life and don’t want to spend a dime to protect it.

bottom line: He contributed to both Democrats and Republican congressional candidates, and as the Fox News article states: “records show Madoff, his family and associates only contributed a few thousand dollars in total to his campaign.” So the contributions were there, but he was an equal opportunity contributor.

June Pope – I used to feel like your post states years ago. I now believe that someone needs to protect the rights of the unborn. Humanity as a whole is bigger than each individual. I don’t believe abortion should be used for birth control, which it is quite often is. I am not very religious but it is atrocious how some of these abortions are carried out (i.e., dr’s throwing live babies in a trash bag, etc.). Just because they haven’t yet exited the body does not mean that don’t qualify as human beings.

Michael Steele’s mandate to broaden the party’s base is an impossible task given the modern legacy of the GOP. Yet, he of all people should know this.
The GOP gave us the concept of “benign neglect” through which racism is to be ignored. That level of denial permeates the GOP to this day and spreads to other things that went wrong under their watch. To let them tell it, we should forget all about GWB and pretend that anything after Jan.20th is totally the doing of Obama. Thus, the biggest problem with the GOP is their blatant deceitfulness.

There is no way we can tolerate your type of mindset that interferes with politics anymore. Especially over a law that will never be changed. The law that you detest and has made you so blind is tearing the party apart at the seams.

2 Questions you’ll never hear a pro-lifer answer.
1. When a woman faces an unwanted pregnancy, who has the right to make the choice about her unborn fetus – her or the government ?
2. Why don’t I see pro- lifers storming adoption centers and group homes asking to adopt children-regardless of race or age ?
Posted by: TLJ | March 12, 2009, 2:49 pm 2:49 pm
It’s hard to believe that the Republican party wouldn’t want SOMEONE out there articulating who they are and what they’ve become. Are they wanting to appeal to the independent voter, a more moderate audience, or are they wanting their voice to be the vitriolic divisive Rush Limblaugh, or Miss Toni Perkins.
Anytime you hear a Republican say that they are “pro life”, the first question asked should be, “no, the question was, DO YOU BELIEVE IN A WOMAN’S RIGHT TO CHOOSE”. It’s not the same thing.

Once again, another great mistake. They thought Sarah Palin was their answer to try to win the feminine/Hillary supporter’s vote. It did not take long for Sarah to make the “deer in the headlights” look brigther. Now they are pulling the black card they accused the democrats of using during the election campaign. The reality is that Barack Obama did not win the presidency due to his race. It appears that the GOP should stand for the GUINEAPIG OPPORTUNISTIC PARTY ,as they seem to continue to operate on the mad scientist mentality.

Back to thergoesthecountry: The only thing different than you and I is that I am extremely grateful for the mind I was given. That means that I will not allow that mind to be programmed by others. It means that I am optimistic that the best thinkers who are bonafide realists will always prevail with their common sense approach to life. If only everybody was confident enough to think that way I am certain we would have better ideas and solutions to the concerns and challenges that face us all. I do believe, however that adherence to simple ideologies have more negative than positive effects to the majotity of the population.

========================================
I’ve this comment repeated many times without proof…usually by Republicans to suit their own purpose. I don’t believe it….what I do believe the majority in this country want their government to be reponsive and stay as much out of peoples lives as possible. That is why the majority in the country supports choice when it comes to abortion. It is also why we expect government to help in times of crises…the notion that this country is right leaning misses the mark. Plenty of pro-lifers adopt children. Maybe you don’t know of them any because of the people you hang with? In any case, the lack of ability or motivation to adopt doesn’t justify the killing of an innocent human life.

Look at our streets and you will see the results of how life is valued-We live in a throw away society. Think about it. This isn’t even an issue about God as much as it is about us – what kind of society do we want to build? compassion and mercy begets compassion and mercy and killing of any kind begets violence of all kinds.

You Evangelicals miss the point: The anti-abortion and anti-gay planks are what keeps you folks voting Republican. They are considered two of the “four pillars” of the Republican Party. If abortion and homosexuality were ever actually outlawed you might become interested in other Christian things like caring for the poor, creation-care, social justice, or ending war and suffering. And then you might even (gasp) vote Democrat.
The Republican leadership talks a good show about these issues, but they’ll never end them because doing so risks losing your support. You’re being played. And the rest of us, Republican and Democrat alike, think it’s sad.
Truth is that all of us, liberal and conservative alike, want a better, safer, more prosperous America. If Republicans aren’t outlawing the sinful practices you oppose, after controlling the White House, Congress, and the Supreme Court for six years, you really have to ask yourself if the GOP is working on your behalf or just playing you like a 5-cent whistle. Maybe you need your own party…

I always heard misery loves company. They can commiserate together as an obsolete minority while the rest of us get on with the business of making our country a better place to live.

Thanks FOX, but I don’t think that the Evangelicals are an “obsolete minority” wallowing in their misery. They are concerned Americans who want to make the country and the world a better place.
What I’m suggesting is that their drive to make the world better is being misused by a cynical GOP leadership who just wants their votes, money, and organizing efforts. The GOP drums up controversy on the topics of abortion and homosexuality to “rally the base”, but has no intention of outlawing either practice because then they would have nothing else left to rally these people with.
I think they could have more political power and serve God better by forming their own party and then aligning with either the Democrats or Republicans based on individual issues.

Missouri Dad, See I do not because I do not think either of the main parties would want to ally with them. A third party system has always scared me. I have always that we were the top country in the world becaus eof our two party system. That was until this extreme element came into the picture and they do not want to compromise with anyone. They do not seem to understand the answers do not lie in ideology or the past. You have to be flexible and adaptable to meet today’s challenges. And that is not them.

MBNA Joe – We Repubs will never abandon the Right To Life position. That’s because we stick to our principles and values even when it’s “inconvenient”.

What makes anyone’s personal religious beliefs public policy. I don’t care what religion you follow and I don’t care if you think abortion is murder. I think every woman deserves control over her own body and is guaranteed civil rights in this country by virtue of being a human being. Religious groups cannot even decide at what point is a bunch a cells life for god’s sake. Is it when you have sex; is it when you see your first ultra sound and see a peanut shaped blob or do you just make things up as you go along. Stay out of my business and I will stay out of yours. I see America one day having civil wars just like the Middle East and it will all bo over religious groups deciding they can play god and control evryone else’s life.

Kris says: — “guaranteed civil rights in this country by virtue of being a human being.”
—— and just when exactly does one one begin “being” a human being? A fetus is distinctly human by virtue of it’s DNA… and it lives from the moment it seeks to grow. I would submit that it is both human and in a state of “being” from the time that its individual new and unique genetic code came into “being”. What of these “human beings” Civil Rights? It was people who thought just like you (deceptively rationalizing ignorance) who justified the idea of slavery because they viewed Africans as sub-human. One day this human tragedy called abortion will be viewed in retrospective horror and disbelief much as slavery is viewed today.

Michael Steele needs to stand his ground. The Republican Party needs new direction. I am Independent, Pro Choice and personally OPPOSED TO ABORTION. I do not believe I have the riht to tell someone how to believe. It is between them, their conscience and their God. Perhaps if the Republicans would loosen their choke hold on some of religious aspects, they could woo the country behind them. I like Michael Steele and he, besides, Senator McCain and Sarah Palin, have me listening more closely to the Republicans. We don’t need extreme right or left, we meed centrists. Politicans are making me sick to the stomach and I am ready to march on Washington. Somebody needs to wake up before the people become totally fed up.

pleaseendmygeneticlineage:”A fetus is distinctly human by virtue of it’s DNA…and it lives from the moment it seeks to grow.” — It lives so long as it’s in the womb-sometimes. Outside the womb a fetus, in it’s first trimester, is essentially a lump of flesh that will cease to exist with or without medical intervention. It becomes viable outside the womb sometime during the mid-second trimester and only with extraordinary medical help. THAT’s when life begins!
