The Note, 3/11/09: Breathing Room — A Bounce, and a Chance for New Messaging from Obama
By Rick Klein:
Chronicling the new era of accountability . . . The first spending bill may not do what the president wanted it to.
He’s signing the current spending bill even though he knows it’s doing things he doesn’t want. As for the next one — that will be different, if and when we’re allowed to talk about it.
All that said, it helps, when trying to walk and chew gum at the same time, to actually get on your feet.
President Obama got something Tuesday that’s been in short supply over his first 50 days: breathing room.
Entering office in an economic freefall means one surefire, regular measurement of how one very influential set of people view your administration.
This is known as the markets. (And engaging its pundits mean you just might be more susceptible to its mood swings than would otherwise be the case.)
Coming off of the biggest market bounce of his presidency, Obama is hoping for a rally. And he’s hoping his signature on the delayed omnibus bill — earmarks and all — allow him to start working on the new legislative tone he’s been promising.
It’s no accident that we’ll see pictures of the president and Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, at the president’s daily economic briefing.
Then remarks on earmark reform at 11:20 am ET — the future that starts at 11:21 am ET, roughly, right after the omnibus becomes law.
The AP’s Andrew Taylor: "Obama is expected to sign the measure Wednesday to avoid a partial shutdown of the government. But the White House has kept the bill at arm’s length, calling it last year’s business. Obama is also set to announce steps aimed at curbing lawmakers’ so-called earmarks."
Per Politico: "President Obama moves Wednesday to head off the emerging conventional wisdom that the stimulus and omnibus have been weighed down by congressional pork."
"I bet many presidents have signed bills that may not meet 100% of their desires," White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said. "There’ll be some new rules of the road."
One last shot, at messaging, and message-delivering, from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell: "If President Obama is looking for his first veto, this should be it," McConnell, R-Ky., writes for National Review. "Looking at the final omnibus bill, Americans are likely to conclude that congressional leaders think government operates in a different realm of reality than the rest of the country. It seems some still believe members of Congress aren’t obliged to make any of the tough decisions that most other people do."
(When will he say yes? "In [an] interview, McConnell said one issue he and Obama might work together on is a possible move to recast at least one of the three major entitlement programs — Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid. At a White House health-care forum last week, he told Obama an accord would be easier to reach if a bipartisan task force of lawmakers made recommendations," Bloomberg’s Laura Litvan writes.) A reminder, from the Washington Times’ Jon Ward: "Democrats who retook control of Congress in 2006 partly on the back of their criticisms of GOP earmark spending have grown prickly about criticisms of the practice, arguing of late that it is the best way to funnel federal money to localities."
But: "Congressional Republican leaders hope to win back the public’s trust with opposition to earmark-laden spending pushed by Democrats," per CQ’s Bennett Roth. "But they face a significant obstacle: GOP members who want funding for their own pet projects as well."
What you already knew: "President Obama’s budget doesn’t have enough support from lawmakers to pass, the Senate Budget Committee chairman said Tuesday," The Hill’s Walter Alarkon writes.
"The obstacles that President Barack Obama faces in pushing his ambitious tax and spending plan through Congress became clearer Tuesday as key Democrats took issue with major proposals, and some of their favorite economists said the president’s jobs projections are too rosy," the AP’s Chuck Babington writes.
As for the road already traveled — is there a shovel ready for this?
"President Obama has repeatedly said the $787 billion stimulus plan passed by Congress last month would save or create at least 3.5 million jobs. But today House Democrats heard a sharply downsized prediction: 1 million fewer jobs," ABC’s Jonathan Karl reports. "That’s significantly less than the White House has predicted. It’s also far fewer than the 4.4 million jobs that have already been lost during the recession so far."
So try, try again: "We have to keep the door open," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said after the closed-door meeting with the private economists.
The Wall Street Journal’s Greg Hitt: "Congressional aides were quick to stress that no plans are being prepared for imminent action on a second stimulus package, and Mrs. Pelosi offered no details about what might be included in such a measure. But the mere suggestion that Congress stands ready to act again on a stimulus package underscores the depth of concern about the economy on Capitol Hill."
"Policymakers need to do more. I don’t think we’re done," said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Economy.com, per The Washington Post’s Lori Montgomery.
Montgomery: "Several economists have said the stimulus package will not meet the administration’s goal of saving or creating 3.5 million jobs by the end of next year because the final package was smaller than expected and contained several provisions that they say are unlikely to be particularly effective."
The report "may give [House Democrats] the cover they need to start setting expectations for a second stimulus," ABC’s George Stephanopoulos reports.
What about the job numbers in South Carolina? "South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) has completed his review of the recently enacted stimulus package and will be sending President Obama a letter in the next few days asking for permission to apply a quarter of South Carolina’s stimulus money, approximately $700 million, to paying down state debt rather than using the money to fund government programs," ABC’s Teddy Davis reports.
"If Obama turns down Sanford’s request, the South Carolina governor will not seek the $700 million in stimulus funds which are under the governor’s discretion. This move will likely prompt South Carolina’s legislature to pass a concurrent resolution giving the legislature access to the funds," Davis writes.
How about even more action? "As for President Obama, I like his coolness under fire, yet sometimes it feels as if he is deliberately keeping his distance from the banking crisis, while pressing ahead on other popular initiatives," Thomas Friedman writes in his New York Times column. "I understand that he doesn’t want his presidency to be held hostage to the ups and downs of bank stocks, but a hostage he is. We all are." Newsweek’s Howard Fineman sees the establishment turning on Obama (the kind of article that might be circulated by both sides?): "Obama may be mistaking motion for progress, calling signals for a game plan. A busy, industrious overachiever, he likes to check off boxes on a long to-do list," Fineman writes. "The American people remain on his side, but he has to be careful that the gathering judgment of the Bigs doesn’t trickle down to the rest of us."
Where the sirens are coming from: "The federal agency that insures bank deposits, which is asking for emergency powers to borrow up to $500 billion to take over failed banks, is facing a potential major shortfall in part because it collected no insurance premiums from most banks from 1996 to 2006," Michael Kranish reports in The Boston Globe. "As of Dec. 31, the FDIC had $18.9 billion in its insurance fund – down from $52.4 billion a year earlier – in addition to $22 billion that it has set aside for pending bank failures. The agency has projected it will need $65 billion to take over failed banks through 2013."
More on the new day that dawned: "The White House Tuesday evening disclosed that almost three weeks ago the Obama administration granted ethics wavers for two additional officials who had previously worked as lobbyists," ABC’s Jake Tapper reports. "On February 20 the administration signed waivers for Jocelyn Frye, former general counsel at the National Partnership for Women & Families, and Cecilia Muñoz, the former senior vice president for the National Council of La Raza, allowing them to work on issues for which they lobbied."
He can’t be left if he’s right — right? "The notion that President Obama has lurched to the left since his inauguration and is governing as an unreconstructed liberal is bunk," Washington Post columnist Ruth Marcus writes. "Obama’s presidential agenda mirrors his campaign platform. He has diverged from it in a few areas — almost entirely to the right."
Don’t call him a socialist: "By contrast, despite the excuse of a crisis, Obama has resisted calls from both left and right to temporarily nationalize teetering banks," Scot Lehigh writes in The Boston Globe. "Similarly, if Obama were a socialist, crypto or otherwise, he would surely be proposing government-run healthcare, rather than an expansion that builds upon our current hybrid model."
Card-check is here — but it’s going away for a while: "Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) acknowledged Tuesday that fierce resistance from Republicans and business groups could force him to delay action on controversial card check legislation sought by unions," Roll Call’s Steven T. Dennis writes.
"We don’t need to go there," said Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark. ABC’s George Stephanopoulos: "Reid has decided not to schedule a floor vote before the summer, likely July, according to a leadership source, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., won’t schedule a vote until she sees how ‘card-check’ fares on the Senate floor."
(Think the unions might have wanted a better rollout than that?)
Donor war: Joe Trippi and Lawrence Lessig say they’ve tallied $1 million in donations withheld from politicians who aren’t supporting public campaign financing: "The idea is simple: People pledge that they won’t donate a penny more to congressional candidates who don’t support legislation to fundamentally reform how congressional elections are funded," they write. "Thousands of people have joined the strike, and the $1 million tally is based on contributions from the past election cycle. Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein alone has lost access to more than $255,000 in contributions from Californians and her out-of-state donors. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) has lost access to more than $110,000."
Exit Chas Freeman — loudly. ABC’s Jake Tapper: "In an angry cable to Foreign Policy, Chas Freeman — the now-former nominee to chair the National Intelligence Council — attacks the ‘Israel Lobby’ he says is behind a ‘barrage of libelous distortions’ and says his sandbagged career in the Obama administration ‘will be seen by many to raise serious questions about whether the Obama administration will be able to make its own decisions about the Middle East and related issues.’ "
Coming Wednesday: a joint House-Senate judiciary hearing on ending gubernatorial appointments in cases of Senate vacancies. Headline on Carl Hulse’s New York Times story: "New Idea on Capitol Hill: To Join Senate, Get Votes."
Remember Pelosi and the planes? Judicial Watch does. The e-mails are posted online.
From the White House Wednesday: "President Obama will sign an executive order . . . to establish a White House Council on Women and Girls, according to an administration official familiar with the move," Washingtonpost.com’s Chris Cillizza reports. "The Council will be chaired by Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser and personal friend to the president, and the day-to-day operations will be run Tina Tchen, who is currently director of the White House Office of Public Liaison and was a major fundraiser for Obama during the campaign."
Things that may have been easier to achieve while they were still in power . . . Politico’s Mike Allen has details of the campaign to boost President Bush’s image. "Former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer calls the Bush pundits ‘a loose confederation of people united in our belief in what President Bush did, and we’re freer now to talk about some things than we used to be — good and bad,’ " Allen writes. "The Bush defense forces include Fleischer; former press secretary Dana Perino; Bush political czar Karl Rove, who has contracts with Fox News, The Wall Street Journal and Newsweek; economics guru Tony Fratto; the prolific Peter Wehner, former director of the White House Office of Strategic Initiatives; and the graceful speechwriter Michael Gerson, who writes an opinion column for The Washington Post."
Allen reports: "Former President George W. Bush will give his first post-presidency U.S. speech in Erie, Pa., on June 17 to the Manufacturer & Business Association, which serves companies in Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York. The top of his remarks will be open to media coverage. Other domestic speeches will be announced soon. The former president’s first speech will be March 17 in Calgary." Welcome back, John Edwards: "Former U.S. Sen. John Edwards took another tentative step into the public spotlight Tuesday, speaking at Brown University about extreme poverty around the world and urging Americans to get involved in what he called a ‘fundamental moral issue,’ " per McClatchy’s Barbara Barrett.
He was asked whether politicians should be held to higher moral standards: "I don’t think it’s for a candidate to decide what’s appropriate," Edwards said. "It’s something for every American to decide for themselves. . . . I have my own view, which I’m going to keep to myself tonight."
Barrett continues: "He did not address the latest accusations about his past affair with former campaign staffer Rielle Hunter. The National Enquirer, citing unnamed sources, reports in its current issue that Edwards has told his wife, Elizabeth, that Hunter’s 1-year-old daughter is his biological child." (Edwards denied being the father in his interview with ABC’s Bob Woodruff.)
The Kicker:
"Eat the same breakfast, wear the same clothes, drive the same. Don’t change anything!" — Jay Leno, speculating about the possible text of an executive order, the day after the biggest stock-market rally of Obama’s presidency.
"This is a massive movement of the government to the left." — Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H., on the Obama budget — in one of those things he probably wouldn’t have said if he had taken his place in the Obama Cabinet. Follow The Note on Twitter: http://twitter.com/thenote

How much of a bribe are the cattle ranchers paying Interior Secretary Salazar to endorse Bush’s plan to take Idaho, Wyoming and Montana (Yellowstone) wolves off the endangered list so they can be gunned down from planes?
Obama was going to reverse this stupid Bush administration plan.

C’Mon Obama, you really looking like a sucker, slave, and sellout to your true supporters. Congress sent you a bill that only you will be stupid enough to sign. They couldnt play around with Bush and McCain, so you proved them right. Quit it brother and get some balls, stop signing these bills without reviewing them. Mr. President, there are 8000 unnecessary spending projects in that bill, and you know dam well they do nothing for the average American.
I voted for you but you are getting on my everlasting nerve signing any and everything that comes your way.

Posted by: Jeebus | March 11, 2009, 9:17 am 9:17 am
If you know anything, Obama is not adding this pork to the bill, Senators that still believe in old politics are adding pork to thses bills and packages. Why do you think they go over these bills and packages for weeks, is because these Senators won’t vote for it if they are not allowed to add something onto it. If you really want this kind of thing to stop, you will support Obama when he tries to change the rules to adding pork to bills by voting against or sending letters to these Senators that are the cause of the problem.

It really doesn’t matter what the taxpayers of this country want. NONE of the politicians give a rip about us. I am particularly angry at the president for saying one thing (no earmarks) and doing another (signing a pork-laden bill)…again. How many free passes does he get for lying? Apparently as many as he wants. Audacity of hope? More like paucity of integrity.

This article is written from a point of view to the right of Rush Limbaugh. It is deeply and willfully misleading. Pork is wasteful spending. But the author hasn’t identified one penny of such spending in this bill. Not one penny. He simply offers empty, far right wing demagoguery. And instead of hailing the President’s willingness to compromise and be bipartisan, he focuses on unsubstantiated talking points that are word for word from the GOP.

Perfect example of a partisan. I read you article??? Using Citigroup as the key example that Obama is changing the economy around, come on! Citigroups January and February profit have nothing to do with Obama’s Policies. Do you know the date he becam president? Any economist will tell you it will takes month’s for a change in policy to have a measurable effect.
If the people of this country want change, then vote out 80-90% of congress! Vote out members of both parties, especially the leadership. They are only concerned about keeping power or getting it back.

All of BO’s talk of responsibility, accountability and integrity are just popular words separated by “uhs”. This bill is little more than an excuse for a spending spree and his position to deal later with earmarks is pathetic. Where’s that leadership BO? In reviewing the earmarks, none look to me to be directly related to financial recovery and both parties are guilty of using this crisis for self gain; are corrupt and are ruining this nation. Way to go Congress and POTUS; “meet the new boss, same as the old boss.” Now, I get to explain to my kids why we are irresponsible and they get to pay for it. Elected officals have forgotten they serve a higher cause.

Redjalapeno; He’s spent, designated money to be spent, or projected spending over the next four years that equals Bush’s overspending over eight years. He’s financed the murder of unborn infants in Africa. He’s used the same doom and gloom and sense of urgency tactics to reform America. He is broadening welfare, thereby enslaving more people than ever before. He has lied repeatedly. A remarkable instance would be when he looked straight into the teleprompter and said the Omnibus contained no earmarks, then smiled, knowing full well the public was aware that he’d broken his promise of no more earmark spending. He changed his position on troop withdrawal from Iraq and has escalated the war in Afghanistan, a war that to date has been a joint effort enterprise by NATO forces. Now America is taking the lead. He reversed a presidential directive that allowed pharmaceutical companies to be held liable for adverse affects to their chemical concoctions experienced by consumers. That will feed a lot of lawyers, his breed. He signed equal pay for equal work which will also feed a lot of lawyers, his breed again. There’s more but I’m losing interest. Gotta move on. I don’t care where the pork came from, Obama promised no more pork and he is breaking his promise to the people who voted for him. Truman said, The buck stops here. Obama promised the same and has not delivered.

You have provided nothing but the usual paranoid, right-wing, whinefest, followed by ‘I’m not playing ball anymore because I’m losing interest’ claim.
Substantial debate is beyond your grasp due to your ideology.
Financed the murders of infants in Africa? Are you saying that the financing of the murders of Iraqi infants, women and children are justifiable? Did you leave that part out on purpose to support your viewpoint.
Again – list the accomplishments and mistakes of the Bush administration during his eight years and the accomplishments and mistakes of the Obama administration during his 51 days.
So far you have demonstrated nothing other than a deep misunderstanding of the American governmental processes.
Chew on that.

Pfffttt…as if Bush had the same circumstances. Give me a break. We get it…you don’t like spending. But enough with the spin, already. And do yo include Iraq in Bush’s tally?

How convenient for the Big Shots we are focusing on the faults and limitations of the New Guy, instead of on the actions of the establishment over the last decade. The more I read about this financial mess the more I can’t believe how blind with greed the banks, the pundits, the investors, the hedge fund managers, and the real estae brokers were. It’s astonishing. And now the market, the press, and the “experts” are whining that Obama hasn’t fixed the mess in 50 days? In my opinion, what we need are new Big Shots.
Posted by: Amy in Maine | March 11, 2009, 10:30 am 10:30 am
The global gag rule is not “financing murder”, no matter how you want to spin it. Once again, it’s a democrat dealing with reality, where Republicans deal in the abstract. Calling people murderers who are doing the right thing isn’t going to get you into heaven.

Republicans really need to find something to whine about other than the deficit and spending. Since WWII republican presidents have presided over the largest increases deficit spending, while democrat presidents have mostly had even budgets or even surpluses in the case of Clinton. Obama’s first year is the exception to the rule when it comes to Dem deficits and is in response to a complete lack of care of the US economy and infrastructure that has fallen behind other developed nations. Not to mention the fact that if you correct earmark spending for actual number of senators and reps the spending of Dems and Repubs are basically even. The only reason Dems have more earmarks in the current omnibus is that they have more representatives.
Posted by: Ordermonger | March 11, 2009, 10:44 am 10:44 am
I am so amazed at all of the BO followers who really look for the gov’t to help them with their problems. Gov’t more often creates problems then it does help people.
Did anyone catch the senators blasting all of the corporate CEO’s for their lavish lifestyles? I was hoping that one of the CEO’s would have some guts to look at the senate panel and ask them “how many of you senators eat at 5 star restaurants, stay at 5 star hotels, fly first class, all on the tax payer’s dime”? But of course they didn’t.
Take BO’s superbowl party for instance- $100 per lb Kobe beef was served apparently. Change we can believe in for sure.
I don’t care who they are, democrat or republican, politicians will ALWAYS abuse the power and $$ we give them.
The problem with the democrats is they want to give the gov’t more and more power with each new election that they win.

Obama in ‘Freefall ? Hey, ‘Freefall’ isn’t so bad, but the bump at the bottom can be detrimental to health.
Feinstein (and Boxer) from the broken-economy state of Calif. ought to have voted FOR the Sessons amendment to protect American workers by extending E-Verify coverage for 5 years. Their 2 votes killed the amendment. and caused millions of Americans to join the unemployed. How can it be the Union/Democrat/American coalition fell apart and representatives of Americans are now captive to foreign lobbies ($$$$) and illegal aliens? These 2 anti-American senators just jumped off the cliff and are in ‘Freefall’. “Heads on a Stick” candidates headed for a severe bump.

I believe very much in our new president and his administration, he, they have more (huge)issues, problems, conditions etc. to manage than any other new Presidency/Administration has had to deal with in modern history. Not only is the scope larger than the per verbal 800 pound gorilla, independently any one of these “problems” could derail our country for years, accumulate a few together & we could be sitting in the middle of the Great Depression II.
Given that the shear size and nature of these problems tend to feed each other and are self effacing to the point that they evolve at an exponential speed, our new administration is up to managing these tasks, and the administration is correct in addressing multipul fronts concurrently, because of the aforementioned evoloution and spped these issues are moving.
That said, I also believe that our new president is missing an opportunity with singing the operating budget just forwarded by Congress. There ARE earmarks within this budget that should be “returned to sender” postage due. Granted, one mans “pork” is another mans “stimulus” these “earmarks” by and large do not pass the smell test with respect to carrying any multiplier effect within the economy.
Also granted, most of this budget IS for true operational requirements that pay for the day to day operations of our government, even 8000 “earmarks” combined that will represent 2%-4% of the total spending is a large number.
And really more to the point, this is a great opportunity for Mr. Obama to walk the talk, support your campaign promise of reviewing this budget line by line, eliminate programs that do not function, reset spending to fully support those that do and eliminate the “earmarks” that do not pass the same level of scrutiny the “Stimulus Bill – Recovery Act” underwent.
We”eve got your back Mr. President, please take a little time with this budget, singe an emergency spending stop gap to keep the government functioning, return the budget to Congress with the directive to scrub it, reinstate the line item veto via Executive order and you will walk the talk with increasing your political capitol exponentially while doing what our country desperately needs.

Odermonger; Clinton did have a budget surplus during his last year in office, but over his eight years as president the national debt more than doubled from $2.3 trillion to $5.7 trillion. It almost doubled again under Bush, rising to over $10 trillion and if Obama’s spending continues it will double again during his administration. Obama has also expanded the federal budget by over $1 trillion. Whether the money is borrowed money or new printed money, the value of the dollar goes down every time money the government doesn’t have is spent. Down the road sometime, somehow the citizens and businesses of America will have to pay for the deficit spending of all past and present administrations. It’s an undeniable and unavoidable fact. There’s no such thing as a free ride.

What about the money saved in manipulating his budget? He not only used projections based on unrealistic conditions concerning defense spending, he reapplied those “savings” to other government buildups and still added another trillion dollars of budget deficit. And all his followers said “Way to go Obama. You da man.” All this after hammering the policies of George Bush during the campaign. He’s all the bad parts of George Bush and he’s found worse things to add to it, his personal touches.

“Young people do have brains and good ones to boot.
I beg to differ with that one a little bit. The young throughout history have often been the easily maniplulated idiots.
They are directly responsible for America’s horrific defeat in Vietnam, and for the preventable murder of MILLIONS of south vietnamese by the communist north, after America left prematurely due to their viscous anti-war movement.
The youth enthusiastically followed Hitler, that obviously didn’t turn out too well.
The youth adored Stalin, and 30,000,000 innocent people lost their lives by the time that communist was finished.
And most recently, the youth showed their incredibly stupid leader-picking skills in Cuba, when they elected a young, charismatic speaker who promised them all free health care, free college educations and promised change.
With the election of BO, the youth have totally proven that they should not be allowed to drive a car, let alone vote.

My family was middleclass, parents college educated, we lived in a house they paid $30,000 for, in a suburban cul de sac, we had one car, my mother didn’t work till the kids had grown, we got three grainy channels on the TeeVee, went to a movie twice a year, if that, and the only “vactions” we took were to grandma’s. But, we thought we were living pretty good, cause, after all, the parents had grown up during the Great Depression.

Sorry, can’t always check this on a regular basis, too busy working and earning money. (Something our liberal friends have forgotten how to do.) But the real point of this discussion should be how we best restore economic stability without continuing on the path of excessive government and excessive government spending. That has never worked, and is only creating a longer window in which a recovery could be possible.

Most economists agree that if we froze spending at 2008 levels and hadn’t started the nationalization of the financial organizations that the market would have corrected itself in a six month to 12 month basis. “Do nothing” isn’t the right approach…control spending, stimulate reponsible growth by appropriate tax cuts and balance the budget are the answer. FDR’s spending spree didn’t work and he saddled us with socialist programs that still remain. The Obamite’s spending spree isn’t responsible either. Control spending first, that will encourage positive and responsible growth.

You are totally correct when you say that our efforts should be focused on the economy. However, America is no longer being battled over democratic vs. republican principles. The war has now shifted to socialism vs. capitalism.
Think about it. JFK’s speech when he said “ask not what your country can do for you….” has turned into BO saying that he “just wants to spread it around a bit”.
How many people do you think attended most JFK’s speeches weeping over joy that they were not going to have to pay their mortgages/rent/electric bills anymore?

The Senate on Tuesday cleared a $410 billion spending bill to finance the government through September.
The bill includes $12 billion for earmarks requested by lawmakers & the Bush White House. The Obama administration has portrayed the spending measure as “last year’s business” because it represented the balance of the final budget prepared by the Bush administration.
Republicans used Mr. Obama’s willingness to sign the bill to criticize the new administration as failing to curb wasteful spending.

South Texan..by all accounts Hoover tried what you suggested..it led to the subsequent crash of the stock market and failure of the banks..do you really think 25% unemployment is alright?? Most people aren’t farmers anymore like they were in the crash..we are people who don’t even feed ourselves anymore..It could be more serious this time around..we live off of credit cards rather than the land..tent cities have started to spring up..not occupied by welfare people, but those who owned homes and worked for 30 years….

Cowgirl: we didn’t hit 25% unemployment under Hoover. That came under Roosevelt after his insistence on government created short term jobs failed and put thousands more out of work. The agricultural information isn’t accurate either. We are more than capable of feeding ourselves, but choose to import some food stuffs as part of the global economy. If we eliminate subsidies desinged to create farmers from producing what they are capable of, we have no problem feeding not only ourselves, but a large portion of the world as well.

No, and we didn’t hit 25% under Bush either, if you go back and read the set up to the great depression…It all happened under Hoover..and unbelievably, it has the same set of circumstances as caused the problem today…its Deja vue..the only difference is that we had insured deposits(thanks to FDR)and depositors didn’t lose their money in banks, other than share holders, and fools like me who had money in the the stock market. There are no quick fixes..this is what History teaches us..its a long slog out of this mess…and we best be pulling together, and for each other…let me know if you need any help on the border..by the way there was money in that recovery bill for help on the border…

South Texan, I seriously disagree with you on the issue of being able to feed ourselves..much of our farm ground has disappeared into real estate..every farmer i know has subdived their farm ground up because they could not make a living farming..most farmers left will not be able to farm this year because farmers rely heavily on borrowing to put their next years crop in..and banks won’t lend..it is actually very expense these days to farm…my ex borrowed 3 million a year to farm a thousand acres..its not a poor persons game..750,000 a year just for fertilizer
Posted by: cowgirl | March 11, 2009, 12:59 pm 12:59 pm
History has (a somewhat cruel) way of repeating its’ self when we do not learn from past lessons.
In fact, as HISTORY records the events of the Great Depression, it started with the slowing down(economic adjusting) of the “roaring twenties”. Through the mid thirties our economy was starting to stabilize from the adjustments of the excesses of the previous decade and our government started to deregulate markets to “grow the economy” and in doing so set the platform for the Hoover administration to continue deregulation and “allow the markets to regulate themselves” very much like the past 8 years.
Once we collectively realized that the genie was out of the bottle and “something – anything” had to be done to head off an economic meltdown the Hoover administration froze all spending, to the previous year(s) levels as the corrective measures needed to stop the downward cycle.
FDR DID inherit the economic conditions that completed there preset path into the Great Depression.
So, spending in the way of stimulus, recovery act, etc is the proper course of action so that we do not allow history repeat itself.
And as previously stated, “earmarks” – actually do have a similar effect as long as the spending carries the multiplier that will continue to recharge our economy.

Listen up liberals…
Capitalism is the greatest economic sytstem man has ever created.
This whole notion that gov’t should be the centralized economic planner (socialism/communism) has been tried and failed all over the world.
Gov’t can’t pick the winners and losers, just like it can’t create wealth. Only the free market can do that.
Washington should act as a governing body to ensure laws are abided by, regulations are followed, and American citizens are kept safe. That’s it.Anything outside of that leads to major problems.
Just look what happened to the housing market when the socialist liberals tried to put a roof over everyone’s head, regardless of their inability to pay for that roof. Thank you Barney frank, harry reid, maxine waters, chuck schumer and jimmy carter with the community reinvestment act…
Bush’s first bailout was a terrible mistake (as most conservatives knew it would be). It did nothing to stimulate the credit market, and now no one seems to know where much of that $$$ went.
By Bush listening to the liberal idiots around him, he opened the flood gates for democrats in congress to act like children in a toy store with our $$$$.
Let these companies, banks, businesses fails so that we can start from the bottom.

Dave – do you know what socialism even is? Call me when Obama starts confiscating private property and turns us into a top-down, command economy. Until then, I think you’re confusing “social democracy” – which is completely compatible with a free market and private property, and is successfully practiced by every industrialized nation (including our own) – with “socialism”.
This kind of hysterical hyberole is why nobody is taking you wingnuts seriously anymore. You’ve lost the plot completely and are like the boy who cried wolf – only you guys scream “socialism” at whatever you don’t like.

Earmarking is a republican and a democratic problem. Both parties have a hand in pork barrel projects. However, 60% of the earmark money is from democratic senators and that leave 40% to the Republicans. I will inform myself as to who signed the thing. Saying that this is last year’s problem does not make sense when you are signing the bill this year. We are on a dangerous trajectory, spending money that the government does not have and has to come out of the taxpayers’ wallets. The only reason the markets rallied yesterday was because Citigroup announced that they were scaling back expenses to become more fiscally solid. That is something the Obama really should look at. As to the markets, currently we are almost at a loss of 100 points. One day does not mean his policies are a success. The Dow Jones isn’t even back to 7,000, for Pete’s sake!!!

Dishonorable Joe
Why can the stock market recognize socialism far better then you can? It has been the worst post-election drop in the history of the market. That’s a little significant, don’t you think?
I think it’s safe to say that I was exaggerating- atleast somewhat with my United Socialist States of America.
Socialism is gov’t controlled enterprise and citizens looking to their gov’t as a nanny figure from cradle grave.
Barry has said ridiculous anti-capitalist things as early as his college years, when he said in audacity of hope “In college I sought out the marxist professors”. Granted, the marxist nuts would not be that hard to find at harvard, barry still must have agreed with their idealogy to seek them out.
Then there is of course rev wright. The man spouted anti-capitalist/anti-American rhetoric from his pulpit for the entire 20 years barry sat there.
And who can forget bill ayers, the man who tried to blowup capitalism and who just happened to have hosted barry’s political coming out party.
All of these people were sought out by barry O. Take that fact, coupled with barry’s own statements like “spread it around” and “it was a tragedy that courst in the 60′s didn’t get involved with wealth redistribution” certainly don’t paint him as a capitalist.
Now we have a media that will only tell the public that barry walks on water. Very scary.

“This whole notion that gov’t should be the centralized economic planner (socialism/communism) has been tried and failed all over the world…..
Washington should act as a governing body to ensure laws are abided by, regulations are followed, and American citizens are kept safe. That’s it.Anything outside of that leads to major problems.”

-Citizen self-reliance and accountability
-Large and powerful military
-Small taxes for everyone

Oh yes, when my ancestors flocked to this country in 1910, everyone certainly “lived off of the land”.
I know what you are trying to say, but you are wrong. Your thinking is certainly not unique. and that is what is baffling to me about liberals- they honestly believe that America and her constitution are fundamentally wrong.
Perhaps you should should tell that to the MILLIONS and MILLIONS of immigrants who have risked everything they have to come to America, both today and in 1900, when my ancestors came over.
America became the most powerful, prosperous and generous nation in the history of the world, in a little more than 200 years, but I guess we should try and resemble France now. Sure makes sense to me.

First of all, silky has a lot to learn about the world. I am pretty sure he has never been out of the USA, which is why he doesn’t appreciate this great country.
I have lived in Europe, and been to France several times. Nice people, terrible economic systems.
I was shocked when I first went to london in highschool to see that the poor people there were actually skinny, and they didn’t have cigarettes! I thought all poor people were fat! Nope. Only in America.
Also, I got salmonella in Warsaw. When I returned to my flat, the symptoms started to manifest themselves. It was pretty bad.
I went to several hospitals where I waited in assembly lines to see a nurse, who recommended tylenol to treat my inability to even keep a drink of water down.
Naturally, I got worse and had to a hire a private physician to come and see me in my flat (which is apparently what you have to do if you want any quality care at all) for $500. I felt better immediatley.
Moral of the story. Europe has been around for thousands of years, and in less than 200 years, Americ’s poor people live better then much of the entire continent.
Let’s give a shout out to capitalism for that.

Airbrushing Obama’s name off earmarks
Thomas Lifson
History is written by the victors, so they say, and Obama famously declared, “I won.” So the evidence he sponsored earmarks (which he is publicly speaking against) must be destroyed. Jonathan Allen of CQ Politics reports on the process of hiding the evidence:
Congress will scrub President Obama’s name from a list of earmark cosponsors in the $410 billion omnibus spending bill.
The reason: Whether Obama cosponsored the earmark depends on what the definition of earmark is and when an earmark becomes an earmark, according to the Senate Appropriations Committee.
The provision itself is still considered an earmark, and it’s staying in the bill (HR 1105) – but it’s losing the Obama brand. …
Subsequently, Senate Appropriations Committee spokesman Rob Blumenthal said Obama’s name would be removed from future versions of the congressional report identifying earmarks and their sponsors.

Your supposed values:
-Small, efficient gov’t (government has grown under every “conservative” administration we have had, see Reagan and Bush. In what way has any conservative ever made government more efficient?)
-Citizen self-reliance and accountability (Obama has brought more sunlight to government then we have had in decades but you just laugh at his efforts to make government actions more transparent.)
-Large and powerful military (Republicans love to talk up the military, they just don’t like to serve in it.)
-Small taxes for everyone (how do you pay for the large and powerful military?)

-Really? I thought he has brought more tax cheats and failed nominees than anyone else in decades.
“Republicans love to talk up the military, they just don’t like to serve in it”
-Hmmm. Regan, Bush Sr., Bush Jr, and McCain all served. Slick willie was a draft dodger, and barry O was too busy “seeking out the marxist professors” to join.
“how do you pay for the large and powerful military”
-Well, if you check the gov’t revenues, starting with regan, you would see that everytime taxes have been cut (including those on the wealthiest 10% who currently pay 70% of the tax load) revenues to gov’t have gone up. And when they have been raised, revenue goes down.
If barry O had spent more time studying economics and less time looking for marxist professors to hang out with, he would know that.

For most of our nation’s history, individual taxpayers rarely had any significant contact with Federal tax authorities as most of the Federal government’s tax revenues were derived from excise taxes, tariffs, and customs duties. Before the Revolutionary War, the colonial government had only a limited need for revenue, while each of the colonies had greater responsibilities and thus greater revenue needs, which they met with different types of taxes. For example, the southern colonies primarily taxed imports and exports, the middle colonies at times imposed a property tax and a “head” or poll tax levied on each adult male, and the New England colonies raised revenue primarily through general real estate taxes, excises taxes, and taxes based on occupation.
England’s need for revenues to pay for its wars against France led it to impose a series of taxes on the American colonies. In 1765, the English Parliament passed the Stamp Act, which was the first tax imposed directly on the American colonies, and then Parliament imposed a tax on tea. Even though colonists were forced to pay these taxes, they lacked representation in the English Parliament. This led to the rallying cry of the American Revolution that “taxation without representation is tyranny” and established a persistent wariness regarding taxation as part of the American culture.

cowgirl; A little more history for you. The British sympathizers were called Torys. They were sympathetic to Britain because of, strangely enough, religious beliefs. The British throne was/is a religious entitlement. The royal family is said to be somehow descended from Christ. So to turn against the church of England and the throne would have been to good Brits an act of heresy. Strange history because most of the colonists were protestants, so that’s why the revolution is often claimed to be a war that was fought for religious freedom, from the Church of England or Anglican Church.

I don’t hate the gov’t, I just don’t want to grow so big that the people lose their abililty to monitor it.
Growing gov’t is something that is very hard to reverse. Once people become gov’t employees and have every holiday known to man off, pension plans that rivals the NFL, and excellent salaries they are certainly not going to vote themselves out of a job.
My theory is that republicans and democrats can’t be trusted with too much $$$ or power, but the democrats are always trying to increase the federal gov’ts power in both areas.

Sam,Obama: “I was against the earmarks before I was for them” which is typical Obama double speak. As one news report stated “President Obama on Wednesday announced new reforms he said would prevent wasteful earmarks, but spoke in support of the practice and defended what he called an “imperfect” spending bill passed by Congress — one loaded with thousands of earmarks.”
Posted by: Gary | March 11, 2009, 4:01 pm 4:01 pm
Gary, what I don’t understand is why the media is giving Obama a pass on his obvious lie about being against earmarks when Obama is now stating he is for earmarks and signed a bill including thousands of earmarks. If Bush had done the same thing the media would be all over it.

Dave – you forget that both Nixon and Reagan and Bush all expanded both the size and power of the government, too.
The fact is that Republicans are just as guilty as Democrats of big for “big government”. The truth is that we are too complex a society to abandon big government. So the trick is not to demand smaller government, but BETTER government.

When the Constitution was adopted in 1789, the Founding Fathers recognized that no government could function if it relied entirely on other governments for its resources, thus the Federal Government was granted the authority to raise taxes. The Constitution endowed the Congress with the power to “…lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts, and excises, pay the Debts and provide for the common Defense and general Welfare of the United States.” Ever on guard against the power of the central government to eclipse that of the states, the collection of the taxes was left as the responsibility of the State governments.
To pay the debts of the Revolutionary War, Congress levied excise taxes on distilled spirits, tobacco and snuff, refined sugar, carriages, property sold at auctions, and various legal documents. Even in the early days of the Republic, however, social purposes influenced what was taxed. For example, Pennsylvania imposed an excise tax on liquor sales partly “to restrain persons in low circumstances from an immoderate use thereof.” Additional support for such a targeted tax came from property owners, who hoped thereby to keep their property tax rates low, providing an early example of the political tensions often underlying tax policy decisions. OK Dave…what say yee

Common Sense; The term “good government” is something that means different things to different people. I find it interesting that the term liberal suggests free spirited while conservative means backward. The thing that’s so peculiar about those perceptions is that liberals want a big controlling government with lots of regulations and laws, a government that dictates how they must live to receive government benefits, while conservatives prefer a small government with few regulations and minimal say in how we live our lives. If you think about the overall situation laws, rules, regulations, standards, qualifiers all restrict your freedom to choose for yourself. That’s why I consider myself a conservative. I don’t like laws, etc. I don’t like taxes. I want to have as much flexibility in my decision making as possible. So I’m a conservative. As for anarchy, when was the last time you saw comservatives protest or stage a sit-in or riot. Sorry Common Sense you must have us confused with the man in the mirror.

The media have been in a love fest with barry O ever since he first stepped out of Trinity United’s door. Remember when the clinton’s were the media darlings?
Those days are long gone.
Whoever holds the most socialist views will also hold the favor of the media. That is why barry should be leary if bill ayers ever tries to run for office. The media just might ditch him like they dithced the clintons.

mmonroe – actually, conservatives CLAIM to want a small government, until they’re faced with the actual realities of governing. Then these very same “conservatives” – Reagan, Nixon, GW Bush – all go on to expand both the size and power of the Federal Government (usually in the name of “National Security”). And when they do cut government programs and oversight, it usually leads to disaster (like at the SEC and the current economic meltdown). The truth is that the only difference between Liberals and Conservatives, when it comes to the size of government, is that Liberals have already made peace with the necessity of big government to run our increasingly complex society – while Conservatives swing from the extremes of their ideological beliefs to the realities of governance. Which is probably why Conservatives make such a hash out of governing at the Federal level.

Response to whoever the phantom poster is who used my name at 4:07; I agree. I give Obama a pass on this one. He had to play politics. The Democratic congress got their wish list through in spite of putting some egg on his face in the process. Now the congress owes him. It’s Washington politics as usual. Nobody ever got anything done there without the cooperation of congress.

cowgirl – you know what the Constitution DIDN’T authorize? An air force. The Constitution specifically authorizes an Army and a Navy and a militia (and I assume the Marine Corps falls in there somewhere), but there is NO SPECIFIC MENTION OF AN AIRFORCE! Clearly the U.S. Air Force is therefore completely unconstitutional and must be disbanded IMMEDIATELY! LOL

Dave, I’ll give you George Bush SR, for military service, however I’m not going to equate Regan’s service in the 1st Motion Picture Unit towards being a part of “a powerful and large military.” Ditto Bush JR’s keeping the skies over Alabama safe during the Vietnam War.
At least Al Gore showed up in the jungle, and John Kerry saved a guy’s life while under fire, McGovern served in combat, Jimmy Carter has some serious military cred, not to mention John Kennedy’s heroism, but those facts don’t fit with your “Liberals aren’t partiotic” mindset, so we’ll just discard those facts.

Common Sense, Obama “I was against the earmarks before I was for them” was intended to accurately describe Obama’s current position on earmarks. Obama stated during his campaign that “If any Bill comes across my desk filled with earmarks I will Veto it!” However, “President Obama on Wednesday announced new reforms he said would prevent wasteful earmarks, but spoke in support of the practice and defended what he called an “imperfect” spending bill passed by Congress — one loaded with thousands of earmarks.” If you had any “common sense” and want to be taken seriously you would see the truth of this. LOL

interesting point, Clean Machine – if Cons want to attack entitlement programs as “unconstitutional”, then they should be prepared to give up the air force for the exact same reason.

Common Sense; What you’re saying is historically factually true except for the part about deregulation leading to disaster. But we could argue all day about that. We’ve already argued all year. My complaint which will never be rectified is that the government is too big already and it saddens me to see it grow even larger. Big government is the reason we live in such a complex society that requires such a big government. By putting more power in the states the complexity and expense could be minimized. But as you put it the liberals have made peace with the necessity of big government so I suppose we’re all stuck with it. Keep in mind though that because you’re the ones who made peace with big government, you’re responsible for our loss of rights and freedom and increased taxes.

mmonroeliveson – um, no. Government is not why our society is so complex. It’s just one factor – our society is complex because of technological innovation, exponential population growth, economics, etc. – government is just trying to keep pace. The idea that government can be shrunk back down to pre-industrial or pre-superpower levels is absurd. For military reasons alone we can’t afford to turn our backs on the size and organizational might of the Federal Government. It’s a pipe dream that Cons just need to get over already.

mmonroeliveson – and do you know WHY the French were in the harbor? To blockade Cornwalis’ army and cut off their retreat by sea. Cornwalis’s forces were caught between the Continental army and the guns of the French fleet – and he was pounded mercilessly from both sides with no hope of relief by sea. This is what forced his surrender. The French were full, and crucial participants in the final battle of the Revolutionary war.
Don’t forget, Cornwallis originally wanted to surrender to the Marquis de Lafayette, not General Washington. That itself should tell you something about the impact of the French intervention in our Revolution.
This is not up for debate, friend. It’s historical fact. Do you seriously not know this? I recommend you take a vacation at Colonial Williamsburg some day and walk the battlefield for yourself. You might learn something.

clean machine, per Newsweek Obama stumbles:
– “The $787 billion stimulus, gargantuan as it was, was in fact too small and not aimed clearly enough at only immediate job-creation.
– The $275 billion home-mortgage-refinancing plan, assembled by Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, is too complex and indirect.
–The president gave up the moral high ground on spending not so much with the “stim” but with the $400 billion supplemental spending bill, larded as it was with 9,000 earmarks.
–The administration is throwing good money after bad in at least two cases—the sinkhole that is Citigroup (there are many healthy banks) and General Motors (they deserve what they get).
–The failure to call for genuine sacrifice on the part of all Americans, despite the rhetorical claim that everyone would have to “give up” something.
– A willingness to give too much leeway to Congress to handle crucial details, from the stim to the vague promise to “reform” medical care without stating what costs could be cut.
A 2010 budget that tries to do far too much, with way too rosy predictions on future revenues and growth of the economy. This led those who fear we are about to go over Niagara Falls to deride Obama as a paddler who’d rather redesign the canoe.
– A treasury secretary who has been ridiculed on “Saturday Night Live” and compared to Doogie Howser, Barney Fife and Macaulay Culkin in “Home Alone”—and those are the nice ones.
– A seeming paralysis in the face of the banking crisis: unwilling to nationalize banks, yet unable to figure out how to handle toxic assets in another way—by, say, setting up a “bad bank” catch basin.
– A seeming reluctance to seek punishing prosecutions of the malefactors of the last 15 years—and even considering a plea bargain for Bernie Madoff, the poster thief who stole from charities and Nobel laureates and all the grandparents of Boca. Yes, prosecutors are in charge, but the president is entitled—some would say required—to demand harsh justice.
The president, known for his eloquence and attention to detail, seemingly unwilling or unable to patiently, carefully explain how the world works—or more important, how it failed. Using FDR’s fireside chats as a model, Obama needs to explain the banking system in laymen’s terms. An ongoing seminar would be great.
– Obama is no socialist, but critics argue that now is not the time for costly, upfront spending on social engineering in health care, energy or education. ”
In addition,
– Obama’s appointments of tax cheats that he had to withdraw from consideration.
– Obama’s shoddy treatment of Gordan Brown.
– Obama’s amateurish handling of foreign affairs with Russia and Afganistan.
etc etc etc

Cowgirl, James Madison, the acknowledged father of the Constitution addressed that exact issue of General Welfare.
James Madison said, in a letter to James Robertson, “With respect to the two words ‘general welfare’, I have always regarded them as qualified by the detail of powers connected with them. To take them in a literal and unlimited sense would be a metamorphosis of the Constitution into a character which there is a host of proofs was not contemplated by its creators.” James Madison also said, “If Congress can do whatever in their discretion can be done by money, and will promote the General Welfare, the Government is no longer a limited one, possessing enumerated powers, but an indefinite one, subject to particular exceptions.” James Madison laid out what he saw as constitutional limits on federal power in Federalist Paper Number 45 where he explained, “The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined . . . to be exercised principally on external objects, as war, peace, negotiation, and foreign commerce.”
So to confuse the Post Office with Socialistic Programs like Welfare(The Act of taking ones Property for the Sole Purpose of giving to another.Which is Not what Taxes are as defined by the Constitution.) is not only intellectually dishonest but shows your lack of understanding in what exactly the Constitution is ment to establish which is a Limited Government with Limited Powers.

Common Sense,
The Air Force was originally a Branch of the Army. Also known as the Army Air Corps. So that fact alone legitimizes the progression of a Specialized Branch for the Sole Purpose of Aircraft. That also Explains the Coast Guard and Marine Corps since one is considered part of the Navy and the other could be considered as such.
The Fact that Ballons did exists in some form in the 1770′s does not mean the Founders could have forseen the creation of an Airforce for Warfare.
Considering that the Main Reason for the Creation of Government is to Protect your Freedoms and Liberties would it not make sense that instruments to assist in that cause would be considered Constitutinal?
Common along that line of reasoning there is no specific mention of Abortion in the Constitution…But yet it receives Government Funds, like the Airforce. But I don’t see how it’s existence protects Me and My Family, Do you?
Posted by: Patch W Adams | March 11, 2009, 5:01 pm 5:01 pm
Gary – actually, the REAL Obama quote about earmarks was this:
“We need earmark reform, and when I’m President, I will go line by line to make sure that we are not spending money unwisely.”
The truth is that Obama was NEVER categorically against ALL earmarks – he was against their abuse. Which is why his signing a bill that contained less the 2% earmarks in relation to overall spending is entirely consistent with his earlier statements.
But don’t let the facts get in the way of your ignorant, angry ranting.
LOL

Patch W Adams – um, no. The Air Force would be Constitutionally legitimate ONLY if it remained part of the U.S. Army. Remember, that Arcticle 1, Section 8 ONLY specifies the creation of an Army, a Navy and a Militia. It doesn’t matter if you think that an airforce is necessary for our defense (or if social welfare programs are necessary to protect our neediest citizens) – if the Constitution doesn’t mandate it, it’s unconstitutional!

President Obama and Congress Fiddle while America’s Wealth BURNS!
Since Barack Obama was installed as President – a mere 6 wks ago, our Major Stock Market Indices have plunged more than 20% (the defining point of a “Bear Mkt”) and the Recession has deepened with over 8.1% now officially Unemployed. investors see major American financial and manufacturing behemoths on the brink of bankruptcy.
Zoom out a bit, and we see the situation even more dire. Since Mr. Obama’s Election, Americans have lost some $3 trillion in wealth, reports Investors’ Business Daily, as the markets have plummeted some 30%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, for example, has collapsed from 9,625.28 on January 20, 2009 to 6,930 on March 11, 2009. In the midst of all this: Millions of Americans have lost their jobs. Small businesses are dying. Big businesses are dying. Credit is tight. Confidence is low. And people are anxious.
The White House and Congress are fiddling – with an “Omnibus Spending” (& Pork) bill that will increase spending by 8% and includes 8500 earmarks that Obama promised to veto , a “Cap and Trade (carbon tax)” bill that will increase everyone’s energy costs, the (so-called) “Employee Free (i.e. Forced) Choice (card check)” which will further increase unemployment per testimony before Congress, and a (National Socialist) Universal Health Care plan which will further put us into debt- No wonder the market is tanking. while America’s Financial Markets and Banking System are BURNING Obama and the Dems fiddles.

Kelly Pritkin, In case you have not noticed we have not been attacked since 9/11, the war in Iraq has been won, (however maybe Obama will change a win to a loss but that will be on his watch) and New Orleans and other areas that were impacted by Katrina are well on their way to recovery. So your definition of failure is not credible.
What my point was is that despite these two catastrophes the economy and stock market grew under President Bush for seven and one half years. A fact you cannot deny. And again, it was only when the Dems took over that the economy started to fail.
The basic reason behind the failed economy now is the failure of the banks due to bad home loans. Bad home loans that the Dems supported and promoted despite the fact President Bush attempted 18 times during his Presidency to bring Fannie and Freddie under control which all the Dems all opposed including Obama. The facts are that the root caused for the failure of the economy, the collaspe of the banks, lies squarely at the feet of the Dems and Obama.
The above should also address the “post oc ergo propter hoc” from Common Sense. Bad home loans supported by Obama and the Dems, led to the failure of the banks led to the current economy collaspe which Obama is still not addressing. As the post from Carl says Obama and the Dems are fiddling while America’s banking system and financial markets are BURNING. A good explanation of this is from an Oct 8, 2008 article in the NY Times “The Reckoning
Pressured to Take More Risk, Fannie Reached Tipping Point” http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/05/business/05fannie.html?_r=1&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink

The war in Iraq has been “won”, huh? That place will go to the dogs again shortly. You think a conflict dyed that deep in the wool evaporates just because W sprinkles a little FREEDOM dust? You’re on acid.

silky, If Iraq goes to the “dogs again” it will be thanks to Obama and on his watch.

Tim
Great post.
Barney Frank should be in jail for his crimes against the economy. While he was the HEAD OF THE HOUSE FINANCIAL SERVICES COMMITTEE, he fought like a wild man against ANY regulation of fannie/freddie (this can be viewed at various senate hearings on the internet) while at the same time having a gay affair with the head of fannie mae. That is one heck of a conflict of interest.
The only reason that most of the country doesn’t know about this is because barney, the blundering idiot, has a (D) before his name. With media protection anything is possible.

This Missouri republican is eating crow. McCaskill said no, while Kit Bond comes out as #3 on the Pork list behind Byrd of WV, the King of Pork, and Shelby of Alabama. Well, Bond is retiring, and Shelby probably will, but he just doesn’t know it.
What’s wrong with the Constitutional process of expenditures passing through examination by budget and appropriation committes? Obama says just now that he’ll approve earmarks “with a legitimate public purpose”. Who is to decide what earmerks are legitimate. You are allowed just one guess.

tim,in case you don’t remember, we were attacked by anthrax after 9/11, rather suspicious since all envelopes mailed were to democrats..and coincidently…no one was ever charged..and don’t give me the dead guy…no one believes it for a minute…i am still waiting to see where that shoe falls

cowgirl; Sorry I wasn’t around to respond to your earlier post about wars weakening governments. The was a time when wars strengthened governments. Persia once ruled the entire middle east. Israel once ruled the entire area from North Africa to the orient. The sun never set on the British Empire. The United States is not an empirical government so wars invariably hurt us. Once the war ends we actually assist our opponent’s rebuilding effort and gain no terrotory or assets as the result of war. The reason those previously mentioned empires failed was the same in each case. Over extension. Too much territory to manage. Too much expense. This is the danger we face today in our government’s assumption of responsibility over more and more aspects of things that have previously been private sector managed aspects of our lives and/or things we provided for ourselves. By overburdening the financial capabilities of our central government and then requiring our government to meet its commitments we will bankrupt our nation eventually. I’m not saying it will be the end of our nation, but it will surely be the end of our nation’s prosperity.

Looks like it’s been “Quite A Day!” Lots of bickering, bantering, “finger pointing”, substantiated and unsubstantiated claims. Lots of ‘cut-n-paster’s', gambler’s (who’ll just toss something out there (for effect), with their fingers crossed and the “Hobo’s” – out there to jump on any train going in their direction. Then there’s the Liar’s and the Flier’s. You Liar’s know who you are. But yet you persist, coming back daily with the same-old-trash….. in hopes, I guess… that you’ll get a slightly new audience, who JUST MIGHT ‘buy into your ‘unadulturated crap.’ The Flier’s are “just along for the ride.” They’re the “Hanger On’s”, they have their partisan platform (Left, Center or Right) and they set out to influence the mis-educated, the mis-informed or the illiterate – “By Any Means Necessary!”
A couple of major problems, I detected while browsing, that I could use some help with;
1.) “Our Congressional Representatives were elected to represent The People.” If that’s True, why is it that 60%+ of The People are supportive of President Obama, giving him “good marks” in Job Performance AND his handling of the Economy, thus far. The People’s sentiments (+ 60%) is certainly NOT reflected in the positions of The People’s Elected Legislator’s!!!
2.) Several Participant’s claim that President Obama won the 2008 Election, based largely on the overwhelming support of blocs of voters; The Young Vote, The Black Vote and The Hispanic Vote. Well the Obama Campaign was sufficiently Effective to garner all 3 of those Valuable Voter blocs. But please be Clear, the Primary Group of Voters responsible for the 2008 Election of Barack Obama, was the Overwhelming Turn-Out of the “Well Educated, Largely Affluent, Politically Engaged – White Female Voter, nationwide!”
It’s been fun, it’s late, game’s on.

“silky, If Iraq goes to the “dogs again” it will be thanks to Obama and on his watch.”
My God, you’re naive. So I guess we’re supposed to occupy Iraq forever? We’re suppose to put a surge in every time Sunni and Shi’ite tribe start at one another? We’re supposed to guard the oil? You know what? Forget it. If you don’t see the whole picture by now, you’re not going to.

To all you lying republicants here you should get your lies straight.
John McCain campaigned to END earmarks.
Barack Obama campaigned to REFORM the earmark process.
Stop getting your news from Fox, ABC, CNN, MSNBC, CBS and NBC and find out for yourselves.
Your lies got us into this middle east mess.
If you think we are stupid enough to put another republican in charge of our country you had better think again. One dummy per century is about all this country can take.
All you Herbert Hoover republicans…KMA

Common Sense,
The Article States the Word “Armies” not Army. The Founders did not dictate what specific type of “Armies” was allowed. (ex. Artillary, Calvalry, Foot Soliders.) So the word would also incompasses an Air Force. This is the Argumanet that is legally used to defend the organization of the Air Force. Therefore according to the Courts, it is a Constitutional organization.
CowGirl
The Letter Madison wrote was a First Hand account of what took place during the Creation of Constitution. Since you and I were obviously not there, his account takes precedence. It is not Opinion it is Fact. The Title “Father of the Constitution” was not penned by me, but by others in the Continental Congress. Read anything on Madison and you can read it for yourself. There were many who debated and contributed but those same Men where the ones who gave that Title to Madison, even if it was disputed by Madison himself.
mmonroeliveson,
What Movie?
Gus,
I have not read all of the ongoing debate about the French on this Forum, but I would have to agree the French did contribute heavily to our Independence.
