The Obama Daughters Surprised With a Swing Set
ABC News’ Sunlen Miller reports: Upon returning from school today, Malia and Sasha Obama had a surprise waiting for them: a new swing set had been assembled on the South Lawn of the White House, a short distance from the Oval Office. The large wooden swing set includes three swings, a slide, a green canvas-covered loft, a tire swing, a small climbing wall and a ship’s wheel. In addition, a small picnic table was installed to the side, with small plates engraved with the names of all 44 presidents. The playground equipment, paid for by the Obamas, was installed early this afternoon by the South Dakota swing set company Rainbow. "It was a big hit," White House usher Steve Rochon said. "The kids screamed. They came down with Dad and Mom." The president, the first lady and the girls tested out the swing set together. The first lady’s office says that the Obama daughters, 10 and 7 years old, stayed playing for over an hour after their father had gone back to work. The last such item to be added to the White House grounds was a tree house for Amy Carter in the late 1970s. – Sunlen Miller

The Obamas seem to be a happy, strong family, one where the parents look out for and care for their kids.
This story neither inceases nor decreases my trust of Barack Obama as a leader, but I do trust him
He is a man who was blessed with intellegence and emotional intellegence, a grown up in every positive sense.

did we pay for that??? my guess is yes, it is probably on the tab with the 100/lb kobe beef. live it up obamas…don’t worry we will pay for it…and our kids and our grandkids….

Concerned, I’m no more a fan of President Obama than you are, but I pride myself on not having knee-jerk responses to his every action. I feel it is important to point out, therefore, that you misread the situation. As the article posted makes clear, the Obama family paid for the swing set themselves. NO government money was spent on this addition to the White House lawn. And I will go on record here as saying it would not have fazed me in the slightest if the government HAD paid for the swing set. But we didn’t, so cut the man some slack. Let the girls enjoy their swing set and don’t snark.
Posted by: moderate | March 4, 2009, 7:53 pm 7:53 pm
The President pays for his own personal expenses, and I am sure he paid for the swing set, if it was not an outright gift from the company.
Don’t see why you think the taxpayers pay for it?
Posted by: vpete | March 4, 2009, 8:02 pm 8:02 pm
The article clearly states that the Obamas paid for the swing set.
Sorry to see that some Americans could be so critical of a dad trying to be good to his children.
Posted by: jim1956 | March 4, 2009, 8:02 pm 8:02 pm
I hope they enjoy their childhoods, because it’s their generation that’s going to have to pay for the deficits that their father is creating now.

And I think it’s an adorable idea that there is a swingset on the whitehouse lawn. What a great idea the Obama’s had.
Posted by: vpete | March 4, 2009, 8:04 pm 8:04 pm
Uh,while the Obama children should have a swingset if they don’t already have one(it’s a normal childhood toy)it doesn’t need to be in the headlines. There are millions of children suffering economically everywhere who don’t have much and don’t want to hear this. Why,also, are we in the habit of referring to the President’s family as the “First” Family? ALL families are important!
Posted by: Wondering | March 4, 2009, 8:10 pm 8:10 pm
To Common Sense:I guess you forgot that this guy went out on Thanksgiving with his kids handing out food baskets. Remember seeing him paint a house to shelter low income families. I think this president has taken the lead in giving. Remember he started his career in politics as a community organizer, some one who spends their entire day working for their community for little of nothing. If you choose to deprive your children of things to give coats to freezing kids, than that is your choice. No one should knock you for that. Don’t knock the president for his choices of giving for both the unfortunate and his daughters.

Did you know that the Obama’s pay for their own food that they eat on a daily basis? I doubt they pay for state dinners. But when they have friends over for private parties, they pay for the food. And they paid for their own swing set. Leave them alone……..

Golly, folks, take a breath. There were no “hundreds of children freezing to death” in Kentucky. A total of 36 deaths – none that I can find listed as children – were attributed to the late January storm: traffic accidents, carbon monoxide poisoning, one guy falling off his roof while clearing ice, etc. The feds declared it a disaster on 1/28 making affected counties eligible for federal aid.

I think it is a great idea. I seriously doubt the secret service wants Mrs. Obama or the children down at the local neighborhood park. this way, they can be in sight, have friends over, and have fun. I have no problem with a swing set, after all, President Bush had baseball diamonds installed and no one minded.
The White House also serves as the President’s residence, and it is good to see it used that way.

The White House kitchen staff includes Sam Kass, the chef she brought with her from Chicago. Mrs. Obama credits Mr. Kass, “who fed the Obamas when they lived in Chicago”, with keeping her family healthy. – NY Times
There is nothing wrong with living well and having your own personal chef preparing meals for the kids and family.

Wonderful for those sleepovers! And so nice for the girls, who can’t go to the park and play like other kids… I am excited for them. Now they can play with their new puppy and swing set!
Are some of you envious and spiteful? What a shame something as nice as this gives you cause to be evil and petty.
Your disability, poverty, or just a lack of good manners, is no rea son to not celebrate the kindness of others.
Obama is President of the United States. People who are president of Micky D’s have as much as what he just gave his girls.

It is great for the Obama children to have a playground set in their new private backyard. Everyone needs daily exercise these days. However in our state of Michigan, and probably most states, all Child Day Care Centers have to have proper ground cover under all playgrounds were children can play off the ground. If fact this these rules are written by the Federal Government (Handbook for Public Playground Safety, PUB No. 325). I suggest Mr. & Mrs. Obama install some proper ground cover so nobody gets hurt. Possible by the guidelines of the Federal Government for public playgrounds and Child Day Care Centers.

“I think this president has taken the lead in giving.”
Are you serious? You obviously haven’t seen his tax returns:
“After Mr. and Mrs. Obama released their tax returns, the press quickly noticed that, between 2000 and 2004, they gave less than one percent of their income to charity, far lower than the national average. Their giving rose to a laudable five percent in 2005 and six percent in 2006, with the explosion of their annual income to near $1 million, and the advent of Mr. Obama’s national political aspirations (representing a rare case in which political ambition apparently led to social benefit).
According to an Obama spokesman, the couple’s miserly charity until 2005 “was as generous as they could be at the time,” given their personal expenses. In other words, despite an annual average income over the period of about $244,000, they simply could not afford to give anything meaningful.
(keep in mind that Mrs. Obama was holding down a $120,000/year job 2002-2005 until she received a spectacular raise to $317,000 after Sen. Obama directed an earmark to the hospital where she was employed)
Not hating, just stating…

(continued from prior post)
“The Obamas got rich in 2005. Their income increased sevenfold from 2004 to 2005, mostly because of Mr. Obama’s book royalties, and stayed very high in 2006 for the same reason. In 2005, another wealthy political couple with significant book royalties was Mr. and Mrs. Cheney, who had a combined income of $8.8 million, largely due to Mrs. Cheney’s books and the couple’s investment income. Just how much did the Cheneys give to charity from their bonanza? A measly 78 percent of their income, or $6.9 million.”
Yes, the evil Mr. Cheney, and his wife who authors children’s books.

OMG! People!! First of all, read! They paid for it themselves. If we expect the Obama girls to not have any fun EVER because of the plights of other children then we should impose that rule on ALL of our children. Would that be fair? The children had nothing to do with anyone’s hardships. And that Rainbow Set they’re playing on is no different than the hundreds installed by the same company all over my middle classed neighborhood. It’s just a swingset. It doesn’t make the lawn look tacky, it makes it look like children live there and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s given to someone deserving when the girls grow out of it. And before you start griping about hand-me-downs or whatever those Rainbow play systems have a lifetime warranty and I’ve seen one that is 17 years old and looks brand new. Bottom line, he’s a dad with two kids. Let it go and gripe about real issues.

“I would LOVE to see how the people who are criticizing him would try and resolve this mess that we are in.”
=======================
I would LOVE to have the opportunity to resolve this mess. Without bragging, I think I could do better than The Community Organizer as I am actually interested in taking actions to improve the economy than pushing a pent-up ideological wish-list (see “stimulus package, proposed 2010 budget, “Housing Recovery Plan”, etc.) that impede recovery. I would stop the fear mongering on the economy and work to instill confidence in investors that the government is not interested in picking winners and losers. I would stop demonizing private industry at every turn. I would scrap a “cap and trade” policy that makes the fringe Green Left happy but that will result in higher prices for energy and manufactured goods for EVERYONE.
How’s that for a start?
BTW – The daily “we inherited this mess” (woe is me) talk is getting old. This is NOT leadership.

Some of the comments you people make simply amaze me. What could possibly be wrong with having normal play things for normal children. I want my president to have his feet on the ground, and know what it feels like to be normal. Do you want him to turn his heart to a gizzard, like some of you folks seem to have done ? The man has done more in a short time for our country than those who neglected it for so long, and had every chance to keep it on track, but didn’t. You critisize Obama for anything and everything, and he has barely started to get things organized. Your not americans, you are trouble makers. I totally admire the Obamas for doing their best at trying to keep their children protected, and well cared for, trying to give them as near normal life developent as is allowed being the children of a very abnormal enviornment that the white house offers. I hope they build them a sand box too, if they want one. I did for our four daughters, and I would love to do it again. Life is about love, not hate. Stop being so bitter when there is no justification for the feeling. You bitterness belchers need to get a life, a family, and some common sense, or would you rather be like Rush Limbaugh. Ever wonder what they will put on his tombstone ??

Mrs. Kennedy wanted to have an area on the White House lawn for Caroline and John to play. J. B. West in his book “Upstairs at the White House” (©1973) wrote, “She designed a play-yard, hidden under the trees near the President’s west wing office. … We soon had a treehouse, rabbit hutch, a barrel tunnel, a leather swing, and a slide.” By 1961, she was concerned about gawkers lining up at the fence to get a look at her children. Near the southwest gate, she said, “We’ve screened off the playground on the south by the mound and by the trees, but if you stand right here, you can get a good view of the children playing. Do you think you could plant rhododendrons or something along this fence so that everybody can’t stare in?” The next day, the National Park Service arrived with thirty large rhododendrons.

The Obama girls are children. At their age, the Bush girls were not partying with vodka and we would not have heard about the Bush twins partying if their father was not president or a high profile person. We all hope our children will not go overboard when they have a drink. If you wish to put the President and other high profile people under a microscope, do so; leave the children alone.

Obama Sells Out African-American Children
A little-noted provision of the Democrats’ budget bill would kill a scholarship program in the District of Columbia that allows some children to escape from the District’s awful public schools and attend private schools, like the Obama girls. In today’s Wall Street Journal, William McGurn profiles Sarah and James Parker, who attend Sidwell Friends with Sasha and Malia Obama:
Unlike the Obama girls, they could not afford the school without the $7,500 voucher they receive from the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship program. Unfortunately, a spending bill the Senate takes up this week includes a poison pill that would kill this program — and with it perhaps the Parker children’s hopes for a Sidwell diploma. …
Deborah Parker says such a move would be devastating for her kids. …
That’s the reality that the Parkers and 1,700 other low-income students face if Sen. Durbin and his allies get their way. And it points to perhaps the most odious of double standards in American life today: the way some of our loudest champions of public education vote to keep other people’s children — mostly inner-city blacks and Latinos — trapped in schools where they’d never let their own kids set foot.
That is, indeed, one of the great scandals of American politics. But with the Democrats in the saddle in Washington, the teachers’ unions expect the escape hatch of school choice to be slammed shut, so it will be.
In today’s press briefing, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs was asked about McGurn’s article and Obama’s opposition to school choice. He was not able to muster a coherent response:

I am outraged with the Obama’s! So much for green…
He should be ashamed instead of gloating.

Reading through these comments not only makes me feel like a glutton for punishment, it also makes me wonder if I am witnessing some sort of high political satire. That’s it right? You people aren’t really this – um – limited in thought? Not all of you obviously, but injecting invective into a story about a swingset … truly pathetic.

It is truly amazing that people can take a sweet simple story about children on a swingset and use it for toxic partisan rhetoric. How sick and sad is that? You should be ashamed of yourselves.

“…Sarah Palin wouldn’t punish a state’s children for their representatives’ political inclinations. Palin ’12, PUMA!”
You are right, Palin wouldn’t do it to get even. Palin let whole towns in AK freeze and starve for no reason at all. Guess she was too busy being the GOP darling in the lower 48.
If Kentucky has kids freezing maybe they should look to their local governments and tell Sen. McConnell to get help instead of obstructing everything others try.

What a lovely story, and I’m glad there are no pictures of the girls playing on it. Perhaps the media really do acknowledge the benefits of a paparazzi-free childhood.
It’s too bad so many detractors here have such poor reading comprehension that they don’t realize the Obamas paid for the swing set. They paid with the money they made earning honest livings by dint of their own hard work.
One can only wonder where their outrage over things like White House chefs was for the last eight years when the Oval Office was occupied by someone who merely inherited wealth.

WE are losers?
Does this idiot realize that WE ARE IN THE WORST DEPRESSION IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD?
(says Obama.)
WE ARE GOING TO EXPERIENCE TRAGEDY UNLIKE ANY EXPERIENCED EVER?!
(says Obama.)
IF WE DO NOT DO EVERYTHING HE SAYS AND JUST FOLLOW BLINDLY, NO QUESTIONS, WE WILL ALL EXPLODE?!
(says Obama.)
Guess it can’t be THAT bad…there’s Stevie Wonder, and Michells’s shopping for dresses at Fashion Week, and special rice at the White House made out of PEARLS or God knows what.
WE are the loser?
Yes, the American people ARE the losers, and anyone who voted for this hypocritical, narcissistic man should be ashamed of themselves.
I’ll take a stupid but compassionate George Bush over a smart but insensitive Obama ANY day.

I think some of you people need to move to another country. You obviously don’t like this one.

I’m from Ky and there aren’t any children freezing to death there.
Posted by: American | March 5, 2009, 2:06 pm 2:06 pm
obamacrat, your senator Mitch Mcconnell voted against the stimulus package, but of course he’s still going to take the money for KY. Your argument is dishonest. How do you know what Sarah Palin would do? His children shouldn’t play because we are in a crisis? Some of you people are pitiful.

I thought they might have outgrown the swingset stage….

I am glad that the Obama girls have a swingset where their Dad can see them playing. It is admirable that the their parents are making an effort to make their lives as normal as possible.
As for the negative comments here, sheesh, I wouldn’t want to be neighbors or co-workers with some of these grouches.
(And if you can afford it, buy something made in America and help someone keep their job. :)

The people that’s being so negative over a swing set for the Obama girls is really sick. Because the country is going thru though times right now that means every one must suffer? If you can afford to do something for your kids are you not goint to do it? You’ll better look to God for answers, man does not have the answer to our problems. If you you’ll read your bibles you will know that know matter who in office America is going to pay for the sins of this nation. No one can stop it. TRUST GOD HE IS YOUR SAVIOR

It’s really sad how grown people are using this heartwarming story of the Obama’s new swingset as a platform to air their petty grievances. I’m personally glad to see the White House is alive with love and joy and youth. Geez, people, give those beautiful little girls a break!!

Maybe this isn’t the most earthshattering news, but some of us enjoy hearing how the first children are getting on. They are just children, and even though I disagree with every Obama policy, I am still glad they have a swing set to enjoy.

Remember that the children of the President can’t go out and ride their bikes around the neighborhood because a) they live in a high-traffic downtown area and b) they would be at risk of kidnapping, shooting etc by some Obama-hating screwball. Living in the White House must be, for children, like living in the Metropolitan Musuem of Art with an apartment upstairs. I am so glad these kids were provided with a place to play and exercise. And how petty of anyone to object, when every article I have seen on the subject makes it very clear that the Obamas, not the taxpayers, paid for the swingset. As for this not being news, I recall when President Eisenhower had some kind of intestinal trouble, radio programs were interrupted one day to announce that he had eaten a bowl of oatmeal. The White House IS news.

If the Bushes did the same thing for their kids, there’ll be hell to pay.
When barrack asked everyone to sacrifice, it meant everyone except for the obamas.

Truly amazing how people will find a way to complain about something as simple as a father giving his daughters a swing set. Why can’t we just let children be children and leave the political BS out of this story.

We just mocking the way the libs treated the Palins and McCain during the election . Now you see how dumb it was?

I am very happy that the Obama’s have chosen to support our economy by purchasing an American made product such as Rainbow Play Systems to create childhood memories for their daughters. For those of you who don’t realize, Rainbow Play Systems was started in a Minnesota backyard shed 25 years ago by a young man who was trying to earn money during college and has grown to be a multi million dollar American success story. If anything, the Obama’s have shown their appreciation for the hard working folks who build these right here on American soil. They are not brought here on the backs of some container ship. I wonder if it would of been news if they had purchased them a foreign made Wii so that they would not leave the house all day and eventually become fat adults who then buy Wii fit for excersise.
As far as this being an outrageous item for the Obama’s to buy in these horrible economic times- They could of gone bigger and grander, trust me!!! The set they purchased is not the top of the line or the most expensive by any means and other than the custom engraved plaque, these same models are seen in many backyards of many “Ordinary” families. As far as billing him for White House staff to install it- Absolutely ridiculous- The owner of Rainbow, (a regular Joe CEO worth millions and actually gets his hands dirty) and some factory installers put it up. It takes my guys about 5-7 hours to put up the same set and we are not as good as those guys!!
I would like to say Thank You Obama’s for #1-Letting your children enjoy their childhood outside on an American made product instead of on the couch playing some made in china video game, #2 Putting a few dollars back into the economy and #3 helping to drive some much needed traffic into my dealership today! Cedarworks are also wonderful American made child playsets too!

Some of you need to take a step back or go smack yourselves in the head a few times. It’s a swingset for cryin’ out loud. It’s the president trying to help his girls have as close to as normal a life as possible- or did you think it would be OK for them to hang out in a public park waiting to be kidnapped.
Also, it was installed by people from the company that built it- who probably bent over backwards to do it right. Mow around it? My bet is that when it warms up, there’ll be wood chips for safety placed under and around the set so if anything, the mowers will have less to mow!
Bottom line is- if you want to complain about things Obama is doing or not doing professionally, that’s your right. But to fault him for a bit of economic stimulus by him spending money for something down to earth, genuine, and fun for his family is just moronic and shortsighted.

“The White House’s chief usher flew out to the Brookings, S.D., swing set factory, per the first lady’s instructions,……………………”This is an excellent way for Americans to purchase a swing set. Rather than having the swing set manufacturer come to your home, ask your chief usher to fly off to them to examine the manufacturing facility. If you don’t have your own chief usher, or even a regular usher, just find a government employee in your community and ask them to go shopping for you. Having the government pay for this will save you money and time.

Good greif! Leave the guy alone. He bought his a kids a swing set. Great Idea! I just bought a similar one for my kids (a BIG birthday suprise). If it gets the kids outside all summer long, than go for it. Why does everyone have to turn everything the President does into something it isn’t? Mom and Dad did something nice for the kids.

Good heavens! a lot of Presidents have had various recreational things added to the White House at various times. G.H.W. Bush had a swing set installed for G.W.s twin daughters. I don’t remember hearing complaints about that. If I remember right at one time there was a bowling alley installed, that is besides the other things I have seen listed, like tennis courts, etc. I also don’t seen how this swing set could be considered to ruin the appearance of the lawn. I am also assuming that it isn’t in the public part of the lawn.

Cedarworks are beautiful and are clearly superior to Rainbow which is also sold at warehouse stores. Maybe Rainbow donated it as a Sam’s Club promo.
