Today’s Q for O’s WH
ABC News’ Yunji de Nies reports: de Nies: Earlier in the Oval Office this morning, the president said, "We’re doing a very good job of stimulating the economy here at home." Is the president ready to declare the stimulus a success? Does he know something that the rest of us don’t? GIBBS: No. I think the — well, I think the statement was made in relation to what other countries around the world have done in terms of economic recovery packages. I think if you look at what some people have said, specifically the IMF, about the amount of economic stimulus that countries should put forward, that a number of the countries that we’re going to visit take part in the G-20 have — have not put a great deal of money forward to stimulate the economy. Obviously, $787 billion spread out over two years represents a sizable investment in getting that economy moving forward. And the president’s proud that Congress passed, appropriated, and he signed into law an investment of that size. As he said last September, as part of the economic crisis, the best way for our country to move forward in a globally connected economy undergoing a global recession would be for all our countries to act together. And he hopes that other countries, many that he’ll see at the G-20, will act as the United States has. Obviously, the president isn’t declaring victory on economic recovery. He’s certainly declaring some victory in the fact that Congress listened to the urgent appeals of the American people to put forward a plan to create jobs and put money back into taxpayers’ pockets. And that’s exactly what Congress did and exactly what he signed into law. de Nies: Who should do more? GIBBS: I — again, I — I would point out to the many people that I’d subtract G-1 from G-20. Obama Backs Off Birth Control Battle?
“Obviously, $787 billion spread out over two years”
TWO YEARS?
The plan says $300 billion is spent in the first two years.

Obama: “We’re doing a very good job of stimulating the economy here at home.”
Gibbs: “I think the statement was made in relation to what other countries around the world have done in terms of economic recovery packages.”
Sigmonde: lol…”Here at home” means other countries. Newbamaspeak.

Am I dense? What’s the joke?
I — again, I — I would point out to the many people that I’d subtract G-1 from G-20. (LAUGHTER)

Why would anyone be surprised?!
Our Greatest Smartest Clueless Leader has always been able take credits of other people’s decades of hard work. Do you recall the single most important legislative accomplishment of PB0, so claimed during his nomination, was passing the nuclear legislation? It’s a success that Richard Lugar and Sam Nunn worked on for two decades. Our Greatest Leader attached his name on the bill, and claimed victory of his.

The country needs something. California, Michigan, Rhode island and South Carolina have above 10% unemployment based on January numbers.
Posted by: mad | March 11, 2009, 3:53 pm 3:53 pm
What I want to know is why are they doing everything except fixing the problems with the economy, i.e. banks and real estate?
(That’s sort of rhetorical)
Posted by: drjohn | March 11, 2009, 3:55 pm 3:55 pm
This is not true. The stock market show that his plan is not working. The job rating is high at 8.1 under Obama since in Feb. It haven’t been sucessful since he took the office in January. Who is going to fix the economy? He doesn’t know how to do it. He has a lack of experience and leadership. The Democratic raised taxes. That what keep so many job losses. They are playing ‘game’ and ‘politic’. It is a wasting of time. The Democratic Congress will lose big in 2010. That means Nancy Pelosi will not be the Speaker of the House anymore.

What really has these bums did except spend trillions of dollars of my money on wasteful government projects that will never work

Obama is doing a great job. His spending will stimulate the economy and put a muzzle on you offensive talking heads.

So when does the Treasury Dept. start answering the phone when the Brits (and others) call re the upcoming G20? British newspapers are reporting that, incredibly enough, they cannot get a response from the Obama administration re plans for the summit. No one will talk to them. This, in the midst of a global economic crisis?

“We’re doing a very good job of stimulating the economy here at home.”
——–
Obama thinks he is stimulating the economy? That is too pathetic to respond to.
If this is an economy being stimulated we are royally scr*wed.
Never fear though. In spite of Obama’s declaration of success for the stimulus package Nancy Pelosi is proposing a second stimulus, which begs the question, why?
2/3 of the first pork laden stimulus is “non-stimulative” by their own congressional budget office scoring. They need to redirect that 2/3′s to real stimulus.
Don’t scr** my kids and grandkids by putting them in more debt with second market collapsing, likely pork laden, non-stimulative bill.
This is sheer lunacy.
Is Obama grading on a curve based on his performance history? Is he just giving himself a two thumbs up, simply for showing up? To claim that they are doing a good job stimulating the economy is inexplicable,….. but it sure does make a great soundbite for the evening news, doesn’t it, which is the real point now isn’t it.
The poseur strikes again.

kat, Obama has a history of attaching his name to the work of others and claiming it for his own. Research Emil Jones from Obama’s days in the IL State Senate to learn more. Hazel Johnson also experienced this during Obama’s community organizing days.

“Its time to bury the Republicans once and for all.”
And this is relevant to what, again? This may be your personal philosophy, Demo R& B, but it’s completely meaningless in the context of this thread, or any other, for that matter.

Equal Rights, fair access.
I applaud Obama’s announcment today that he has formed the White House Counsel on Women’s Issues. Now, when can we expect President Obama to announce the formation of the White House Counsel on Men’s Issues? Further, we can we expect him to announce the formation of the White House Counsel on LGBT Issues?
Fair is fair, and equal rights is equal rights.

I have some Qs for the WH:
Does the president plan to nominate a Deputy Secretary of the Treasury? Or some Under Secretaries? Or maybe some Assistant Secretaries, etc and so forth?? Or is Geitner expected to continue to drive this train wreck all by himself indefinitely? What’s going on, can’t they find any good Democrats who have paid their taxes? Or perhaps the president’s just too exhausted from picking out DVDs to get the job done–after all, who knew there would be so much work.
Obama dismays and frustrates even those of us who had no expectations of competency to begin with. And apparently HE thinks things are going swimmingly and that he’s “very good” at his job. He and his administration border on buffoonery.

Kyda Sylvester: If Geitner works alone he won’t have to cover up anything. He will have well kept secrets from us.
Posted by: Mildred | March 11, 2009, 5:28 pm 5:28 pm
So?
Now we know! He signed the bill in private! :(
Obama is not man of authenticity or integrity. He is a coward and an obfuscating (lying), salesman with an Obama/Pelosi agenda that uses “the people” as pawns! :(
If Obama had an ounce of intestinal fortitude, he would have vetoed this bill!
The democrats controlled congress last year. Bush threatened to veto this bill. So the dems waited for the wimp to get to the White House.
History will give Bush high marks for success in Iraq and protecting the USA.
Obama will be a one term obfuscating, pseudo intellectual POTUS who reads a teleprompter and has no idea what he is doing!
And, I am no far-left or far-right wing-nut!

Wow – Boston Globe is reporting:
“The federal agency that insures bank deposits, which is asking for emergency powers to borrow up to $500 billion to take over failed banks, is facing a potential major shortfall in part because it collected no insurance premiums from most banks from 1996 to 2006.”
“Congress believed that the fund was so well-capitalized – and that bank failures were so infrequent – that there was no need to collect the premiums for a decade, according to banking officials and analysts.”

Sometimes you just shake your head.

Wow Good catch Flash!
The Democrats must be pleased with:
- Geithner’s technical ability
- the Presidents fireside chats
- the response of the markets
This is all great because
- Keynesian economics is being exposed
- The market is working. Assets are being marked down to government meddling levels
- Only personal savings will save the banks
The people are in charge again…only personal responsibility and savings will create the capital to escape the Great Disruption

Flash passed along the following depressing bit of information: “Wow – Boston Globe is reporting:

Wow is right. How can we possible blame this on Bush and Bush alone, when it started 4 years before he was elected? Oh, that wascally wabbit.

Since this was an issue apparently decided by Congress, who controlled Congress from 1996 to 2006?

An examination of the thread reveals reveals that no blame was attached to Bush, with the exception of yours.

The enemy is the philosophy of deregulation, which started gaining traction under Carter, of all people. While there have been some Republican heroes for sure, the vast majority rode the deregulation bandwagon to its natural conclusion, which we see now. Of course, the Democratic Party doesn’t come out smelling like roses either. A substantial number of them, particularly the Blue Dog and New Democrats, are totally worthless as well.

When are you going to cover Obama’s first, stimulus-related signing statement, Jake? The AP has the story out now.

“When are you going to cover Obama’s first, stimulus-related signing statement, Jake? ”
Bush was accused as “shredding the Constitution” for doing this. Here, Obama seems to be doing the same thing but the Bush haters and the media are ignoring it.
