US Can’t Stop North Korean Launch, Gates Says
ABC News’ Tahman Bradley reports: Secretary of Defense Robert Gates predicted North Korea would launch a missile soon and said there’s nothing the United States can do about it. "I would say we’re not prepared to do anything about it," said Gates during an appearance on "Fox News Sunday." The United States and countries in Asia have been closely monitoring activity in North Korea after learning that the communist country had begun placing a Taepodong 2 missile at a launch facility. North Korea says the missile will be used to launch a communications satellite in early April. But the technology for a satellite deployment can also be used to launch a ballistic missile, and that’s why the U.S. and allies have expressed concern that North Korea might test its ability to reach the United States with a missile. Gates reiterated that concern on Sunday. "I don’t know anyone at a senior level in the American government who does not believe this technology is intended to mask the development of an intercontinental ballistic missile," he said. North Korea currently does not possess the ability to put a nuclear warhead atop its missile, but the country wants that capability, Gates added. Though the missile North Korea currently plans to launch cannot reach the West Coast of the United States, the military might move to strike it down should North Korea target Hawaii. Gates called the launch of the missile "very troubling" and a sign that the series of meetings between the U.S., China, South Korea, Russia, Japan and North Korea known as six-party talks have not made any headway in getting North Korea to curb its nuclear program. "If this is [North Korean leader] Kim Jong-il’s welcoming present to a new president – launching a missile like this and threatening to have a nuclear test – I think it says a lot about the imperviousness of this regime in North Korea to any kind of diplomatic overtures." A Japanese newspaper reports that North Korea is preparing to launch a short or medium range missile after it carries out plans to fire the long-range missile, per the Associated Press.

Gates is right. If we stop it then North Korea can ask the UN to shut down our missile programs, and Iran can ask the UN to shut down all our nuclear research and take our nukes. After all we are the largest seller of weapons in the world not North Korea.

Not taking any steps to stop it is absolutely the right way to go. China gave North Korea the technology because it wanted a “rogue” state to use it to attack America, and because any moves America made to stop it, would distract the US away from China, and reveal important intelligence about the US’s capabilities. The less overt action the US takes, the more the rest of Asia, China included, will be forced to recognize that they’re creating a monster right on their own doorstep, and that if North Korea stops seeing the US as a threat, it might well start seeing other countries immediately around it as one. Russia will also start seeing that threat, as the US moves to diffuse tensions with Iran, and militant Islamic fury turns towards revenge over Russian atrocities in Chechnya.

Does anyone remember Saddam Hussein and his “capabilities”. Billions spent and never a shred of evidence that he ever planned to “launch missiles at everyone”.

Every effort should be made by the world’s major powers, working through the U.N., to stop the proliferation of nuclear weapons. Diplomacy and economic incentives should be used to the greatest extent possible with military action reserved for the choice of last resort. In the global economy, the interest of the major world powers are inextricably tied together, and they all have an overwhelming interest to prevent rogue nations from acquiring nuclear weapons. Once this is clearly recognized by the major world powers, we may begin to make accelerating progress toward nuclear non-proliferation.

Stop worrying and let the rest of the world do some of the worrying for a change, and make them stop using the US as a scapegoat whipping-boy. Whatever North Korea launches, wont be carrying a payload, and even if it hit Hawaii, that would only give the US a justified reason for response. Stop being scared of shadows.

Having a missile is one thing. Having the long range capabilities to launch and hit a target in the continental US is another. They may get the missile. Lets look at the “purporting evidence” The Post
reported that the video shows a 20-something
woman with light skin and long brown hair taking
a red straw from her mouth and bending over a
desk, inserting the straw into her nostril and
snorting from lines of white powder.
The woman appears to “resemble” the 27-year-old
Biden, a social worker who was a visible presence
during her father’s campaign for the White House.
Dunlap refused to name the person who shot the
video, but told the Post that he knew Ashley Biden
well and had attended other parties with her at
which there were illegal drugs. The lawyers said the
person who shot the video used a camera with a
hard-drive that he later destroyed, drilling into the
device and tossing it into a lake.
Talk about greed, the person who has the tape,
obtained a lawyer to try selling it to the press for
over $1/4 million! The lawyer thought it was
legally done, but later found out that it was a
hidden camera, so he dropped the client like a hot
potato.
Lets see what transpires before inserting your foot

ABC news fails to report more importantly that Gates also said, “I think if we had an aberrant missile, one that was headed for Hawaii, that looked like it was headed for Hawaii or something like that, we might consider it(shooting it down),” Gates said. “But I don’t think we have any plans to do anything like that at this point.” IF A MISSILE WAS HEADING TOWARD HAWAII WE MIGHT CONSIDER SHOOTING IT DOWN??????? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?????????? How about if it was headed toward the lib’s beloved SAN FRANCISCO or WASHINGTON DC? As far as not being able to shoot it down, Obama and the NAVY were talking all types of smack about how they were going to shoot down the missile if NK decided to launch. Now that they’re faced with a bold threat from Kim Jong-Il they back down? It’s one thing to say you’re not going to do it to begin with. It’s another thing to say that you are going to do it and then back down. It shows our enemies that we can be pushed around. GREAT! In addition, you say that you’d CONSIDER shooting down the missile if it was headed toward Hawaii? Is this our foreign policy, now? We might protect you if a missile is fired at you. I won’t be moving to Hawaii anytime soon that’s for sure. This is the saddest thing I have ever heard. We’ll have to consider it before we protect our citizens. Ugghh. You see one of our principles is that we value our freedom, we realizes that it is a privilege that has been paid for with a heavy price, and for that reason any aggressive threats to take away or undermine our freedoms in one accord both democrats, independent and republicans a like, than our finger pointing becomes a fist against thee aggressors.

I hate what North Korea did, but what right do WE have to tell ANY county what they do as far as missile development…(or as we would call it when we do tests…”missile defence”)

I story should have read President Zero plans to do nothing, but now he vows to pursue missile defense in Europe? Zero has no clue what he’s doing. He probably doesn’t even know that he’s in Europe talking down our great nation, America that he and his racist wife and all his bonehead friends don’t even like.

Why not forget the U.N. and ask the Chinese to tell the North Koreans to “Cool it!” Better yet, stop thinking that we run the world, it didn’t work for Bush and it isn’t going to work for President Obama and Hillary. Good example was the Georgia Invasion-sent Senators, Condi rice, and everybody to Georgia-not one went to Russia! Why? President Bush didn’t want to negotiate with Russia about our Patriot Missiles in Poland. Of Course, JFK told Russia not to put missiles in Cuba but that was different!

Korea & KIA warns US to immediately stop driving cars that get less than 36 mpg, or the satellite launch will continue.

North Korea has got to go. Literally. They need to be turned into an ocean. Maybe we could name it the “North Korean Sea.” Either way, allowing Jong to live is going to eventually lead to the loss of millions upon millions of lives from neighboring countries. Im sorry, but North Korea, or their way of life, needs to be eradicated.

The USA will not fall nor surrender to anyone. We must stand strong against N. Korea and defuse them before there country becomes more powerful than they are now. We must put water on the fire now before the fire gets out of control. To do nothing will only cause more hardship for S. Korea and the surrounding countries. N. Korea’s corrupt government must fall and a new political government must be formed. Give the power to the people of there country. The United States must act now.. It is our duty to do so. The reason why the USA will always prevail over the bad is four words,” In GOD We Trust”.
