2012 Republicans Paint Obama as ‘Weak’
ABC News’ Teddy Davis reports: Republicans with an eye on the White House in 2012 are stepping up efforts to portray President Obama as "weak" on foreign policy. First there was Nevada Sen. John Ensign, who has a political speech planned for June 1 in Sioux City, Iowa, telling CNN that Obama’s recent meeting with Hugo Chavez at the Summit of the Americas was "irresponsible". “When you’re talking about the prestige of the United States and the presidency of the United States, you have to be careful who you’re seeing joking around with,” Ensign told CNN on Sunday.”And I think it was irresponsible for the president to be seen kind of laughing and joking with Hugo Chavez." Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who said recently that he will decide next year on whether to run for president in 2012, criticized Obama on Monday for what he called a "weakness" in his emerging foreign policy. "Everywhere in Latin America, enemies of America are going to use the picture of Chavez smiling and being with the president as proof that Chavez is now legitimate, that he’s acceptable," Gingrich told NBC’s "Today." "It does matter to the world if the United States tolerates a vicious anti-American propaganda campaign and then smiles and greets the person who’s systematically been anti-American for his entire career." The latest potential Republican presidential candidate to portray Obama as weak on foreign policy is former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R). In a Tuesday op-ed for National Review Online, Romney calls Obama "a timid advocate of freedom," adding that he "failed his early foreign-policy tests." Romney’s op-ed criticizes Obama on a series of foreign policy issues. The former Massachusetts governor says Obama did not adequately stand up to Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega’s denunciation of U.S. efforts to "free" Cuba and Romney criticizes Obama for telling "Arabic television" that America "dictated" to other nations. Romney also takes Obama to task for not responding more forcefully to Iran’s announcement that it has successfully mastered every step necessary to enrich uranium or to North Korea’s launch of a long-range missile. "As one of the world’s most oppressive and tyrannical regimes is on the brink of securing the ‘game changing’ capability to reach American shores with a nuclear weapon, the president shrinks from action: no seizure of North Korean funds, no severance of banking access, no blockade," writes Romney. A spokeswoman for the Democratic National Committee responded to the criticism of Obama by charging that Americans rejected the "Republicans’ cowboy, go-it-alone approach to foreign policy" in November. "Why anyone in America would take foreign policy advice from Republicans who supported the failed polices of the last eight years — policies which made us less safe at home and less respected in the world – is beyond us," DNC spokesperson Brandi Hoffine told ABC News. "Playing politics with foreign policy as these folks are doing is exactly what made us less safe and damaged our relationships with our allies in the first place."

Hehe…sounds familiar. We have a break down with our allies, America pushed into an unjust war, thousands killed, the World rejected the Bush administration’s ‘my way or the highway’ attitude, Torturing foreigners thus leaving us unsafe due to our “hypocricy”. America doesn’t have but one “Allie” in the whole world. Weak? I would say we are at our Weakest due to the Bush administration. I am a private citizen, and I wouldn’t defend the “wrongs’ of this administration or any other.. when it’s blatantly torturing and violating civil liberties, no more than I would defend slavery. The Repukes needs to stop “lying” and covering up, because nothing of any good is build on Lies and Mistrust. This is the REAL ISSUE of America…..Lies and Mistrust of us.

yakity yakity yakity yak! These Republicans are a set of empty barrels..empty barrels make the most noise. I guess Obama should have ignored chavez and don’t talk to him..maybe spit in his face..how about kicking him in the groin..all Obama did was being cordial and that entails sometimes shaking someone’s hand or sharing a laugh with them. These Republicans are nothing but a set of lobeless frontal obama critics..they would criticize everything Obama say or do. Bush did much worse but they supported him. Gringrich plans to run for president..please give me a break! I guess the argument is that if Bush could be president then anyone can be president..President Obama is doing a fantastic job! keep up the good work Mr President!

If it is not greed of power what is it! The President hasn’t even finished 100 days since he took Office and others are now eyeing on 2012?????
Please keep your distraction aside and let the President do what he was elected for.

I watched the Chris Wallace interview with Cheney on the internet last night. Apparently, Cheney got the memo that the Republican Party’s future is tied to smearing Obama with this “weak on foreign policy” meme.
Watching Cheney, you are struck by how intelligent he appears, straight out of central casting for a respected authority type. (Or is that just because he resembles my late father?) Listening to Cheney, on the other hand, gives me the chills. Talk about putting Party ahead of country, talk about a psychopathic desire to destroy the current leader to redeem himself in the eyes of history. Nothing he said was helpful, nothing that would illuminate our current policy options, it was all just an attempt to tear down Obama. Cheney may be intelligfent and cunning but it isn’t in the service of our nation, its in the service of himself.

Sngeorgia,
Well said! Thank you for unleashing some truth on the frontal lobeless Rush Limbaugh disciples on this blog. These people never cease to amaze me with their hypocrasy. After the Bush years and the load of crap we had to deal with these people still have the gall to criticize everything Obama say or do. The man has been in office for close to four months and yet these empty heads want him to clean up in four months the horse excrement that George I never made a mistake Bush took eight years to build up.

Sara, my name is Sara too, Not with an “H”. The Republicans has ‘brought down an entire Strong Country” in 8 years….ran our strongest “allies’ away, then abandoning us. As any “GREAT” nation, America needs Allies. Torturing is as Low as it gets, setting us up for more attacks based on Anger……This is how the Republicans lead….on anger, fear and hate. American jobs has left the country under the repukes, 700billion goes to the Middle East for their oil, our financial system is weak without regulations, and the American people suffers year after year. These idiots don’t even know that America isn’t strong without jobs, middle-class workers, healthcare and it’s own clean energy. Our Military Mite is awesome, but we need more than guns to be “truly stong”. The Republicans are Weaklings with a Loud Mouth that no one listens to anymore. Strength is always quiet, persistent and always thinking.

Good God. Is everything anybody does nowadays going to be linked to the 2012 presidential run. I mean come on!.
A president was just elected so let him do his job (full disclosure i didn’t support him). If he does a good job then he will be re-elected if not then someone else can jump in but this constant 2012 talk is making the media look like a bunch of buffoons (if thats even possible at this point).
I got a novel idea report the actual NEWS! like the tarp funds, or the fiscal stimulus, or the 2010 budget, or the afganistan war, or iraq war, or the auto makers, etc

All the Republicans know how to do is smear and fear. They are simply hateful. Cheney, of all people, should be tried and convicted as a war criminal. I think he ran the whole show the past 8 years. Bullying is the only thing they feel makes us “strong”. What a mentality! Chest-thumping, fear-mongering, lying, everything they did that made the international community hate the U.S. has been reversed–and they don’t like it. Too bad! It’s time we made the world like us again, and get behind us. We need all the help we can get to rise out of this economic mess and on-going terrorism threats. What would they have had Obama do when Chavez handed him the book? Grab it, hit Chavez over the head with it, spit in his face, and punch him out? I am sure that is exactly what Rove, Cheney, Blimpbaugh, Gingri(n)ch and the rest of those neo-con creeps would have loved to see happen. Obama has too much class for them. They seem to equate “hate” and “force” with “power” and “respect”. It’s not the same and Obama knows it.

Obama has only been in office 3 months and their already campaigning for 2012. What on earth are they going to do if come 2012 the economy is good and we are not seen as the evil ones around the world? They can either now try and take part in trying to repair our country or sit back and do nothing except attack. Come 2012 they will be the weak ones.

Let me see if I understand where the Republicans are coming from. Okay! Obama should have ignored Chavez and not talk to him. Maybe he should have spat in his face..how about kicking him in the shin for saying all those bad things about America! At the G20 summit in Europe..Obama should have talked about our mighty army and that anyone who is ready to fight “bring it on”. He should have ignored the Russian president..Maybe spat in his face..and kick him in the shin. Obama should have ignored all the so called enemies of america..then oh then! Can we say that we have a strong leader. Okay! I got it now.

Events like last week’s summit are about one thing: DIPLOMACY! So now the Limbaugh-Lovers and cynical right-wing kool-aid swillers have their panties in a knot because our president shook hands and smiled? Are you shatting me? Suppose he took the occasion to rant and rave like a lunatic such as Ahmadinejad. Spit in a few faces, or punch-out Ortega and Chavez. They Limbaugh-Lovers would be screaming for Obama to resign. It is about DIPLOMACY, you morons.

It took this election for me to realize that some people were not as smart as I thought they were. I still can’t get around this concept of talking tough to appear strong. They’re starting to sound like a bunch of chi-wawas barking so loud to appear tough.
If you’re president of the United States, do you really need to tell people how strong you are. Aren’t you the only country who’s already anihilated an almost entire city? You don’t think all other countries already know you cannot be touched? It is their only weapon to start bullying before being bullied. Their words are the only weapon they can rely on. Do you remember Baghdad Bob? His words were all they had left. Don’t you think Cuba is dying to be friend with United States? But do you really think they will say it publicly?
Posted by: D. | April 21, 2009, 10:01 am 10:01 am
Obama displays what is known as quiet strength..you don’t have to beat your chest and shout and carry on to be strong..you don’t have to talk about how strong your army is and whoever is ready to fight “bring it on”. That is how bullies behave..America according to the Obama doctrine is not a bully! America is a leader of the free world and should lead by example. The world is now very excited about Obama and America assuming its rightful place as leader of the free world. Obama is doing a magnificent job! I am proud of my president! I haven’t been able to say that in eight years and it feels good again.

Thank God we aren’t looking like Cuba yet, without the excellent education and medical care their citizens recieves. Look at AMERICA!!!!!! The Repukes has systematicly turned this country into a 2 class of people based on greed, fear and hate. Poor and Rich. Make it close to impossible to go to college (Keep use ignorant and powerless)Reward the Rich and powerful with TAX CUTS (give us the crumbs, keep us overwhelmed from “scrapping”) Raise the workers taxes, Fight against AMERICA’S AUTO INDUSTRY AND IT’S WORKERS, and Praise Foreign Auto Industries. Gave us a SERVICE America, without inventions and manufacturing. President Obama is a very smart man and understands the importance of diplomacy, but don’t be fooled, he can and will be stern which the situation demands it. I was impressed by the way he handled the somali piracy issue..he worked behind the scenes with the military and gave them the all clear to shoot if need be. He did not come out to the press hooting and howling at the pirates..which is many of the Rush disciples were hoping he’d do..for them that is strength..that is George I’ve never made a mistake Bush’s style. President Obama is doing a terrific job!

The first thing the Repubs want to do is GO TO WAR to prove that we our tough. Sure, let them send our sons and daughters die in a war that totally makes no sense. ACT Cocky, act bad,in doing so gets a lot of people killed. Repubs have no clue on how to lead. Crying over a smile and a hand shake! My God, Repubs are suppose to be so religious. But its obvious they have not read their bibles for if they had done so they would realize that Jesus lead with kindness, temperance. Obama knows that his personal power comes from intellect and respect. A TRUE SIGN OF A LEADER. The power is in turning the other cheek. Pres. Chavez does not clothes us, feed us or assist America in any positive way. So why pick a fight with ignorance. He is meaningless to us. Let’s fight for the right to live our American dream. Let’s all come together and fight for our economy, jobs and health care. Let’s fight for the Pres. right to lead us over the next four years. And tell the Repubs to shut up and work with our pres.

Posted by: dl | April 21, 2009, 10:24 am 10:24 am
Apparently none of you read the op-ed that Romney has written. Here is a quick quote:
“At last week’s Summit of the Americas, President Obama acquiesced to a 50-minute attack on America as terroristic, expansionist, and interventionist from Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega. His response to Ortega’s denunciation of our effort to free Cuba from Castro’s dictatorship was that he shouldn’t be blamed “for things that happened when I was three months old.” Blamed? Hundreds of men, including Americans, bravely fought and died for Cuba’s freedom, heeding the call from newly elected president John F. Kennedy. But last week, even as American soldiers sacrificed blood in Afghanistan and Iraq to defend liberty, President Obama shrank from defending liberty here in the Americas.”
First of all, you represent a nation of people…and yes, some of them were older than you when that happened. This isn’t about ‘you.’ You know, I really do not understand how people can support someone that apologizes to everyone over our history. Has Germany/France displayed any gratitude for the tens of thousands of American soldiers that died on their soil? No. When Libya attacked our soldiers while they were at a night club, France would not allow us to fly through their airspace to retaliate…yet, we should be apologizing to them because decisions were made that they did not agree with. It makes no sense.
And to the person who blasted Cheney over healthcare…Really? The government cannot control their own spending, yet you want them to control healthcare? They can’t even balance a checkbook. Personally, I wouldn’t trust them to do it. Also, it is not the responsibility of the federal government to provide healthcare. Sorry, as nice as the thought is and as much of a disater it would be if it were to be implemented…it is not their job.
And to discuss the Chavez incident. No, he should not have shaken his hand. This is a man who has spent his entire political career calling us evil. Yet, you think it’s ok to accept gifts from this man? If someone you knew was telling everyone in your town that you and your family were evil, would you do the same? Probably not. There is a time and place for diplomacy, but this was not it. Perhaps if Obama and Chavez were to hold a meeting behind closed doors to see if anything could be agreed upon, that would have been more acceptable to the nation.
Obama is weak. He threatened N Korea and then ran to the UN. What did that accomplish? He sent a video to Iran, who now stood in front of the UN and blasted both the US and Israel. He apologized about the US and our ‘war on terror.’ Sorry, the US has been attacked over the past 30 years. We do not owe anyone an apology. I highly doubt any of these extremist are going to say ‘My bad, America. I’m sorry.’
I agree with diplomacy over war…but I do not agree with apologizing to people just so they’ll ‘like’ us. Decisions were made based on the infomation provided at the time. Sure, hindsight is 20/20…but you do not always have the luxury of time to determine if what you are doing is 100% correct.
Yes, Bush did some pretty stupid stuff…there is no doubt in that. But you should not support someone simply because he is doing things differently even when what he is doing is just as bad, if not worse.

Everyone is missing the story. The comments by the Public are overwhelmingly supportive of the decisions Obama has made and the actions he has taken. Instead, News Media latch onto the naysayers who are severely marginalized. And incredibly small minority of responses (on every board) agree with the Republican attacks. Why hasn’t this been noticed? Isn’t that the real story?

“Ok, I guess I am missing your point? Robinson stated the Obama should have given Chavez and Ortega the ‘back of the presidential hand.’ Which goes along with what I said…”
Kudos to you for reading it. Robinson’s point is counter to what the far-right is outraged over, (yet again & they can’t remember their own history) – a handshake with Chavez and that Obama should not have gotten up from Ortega’s speech.
There is nothing to be gained from publicly shunning the leaders. Robinson stated ” Nothing would have been gained by barking orders at our neighbors and reinforcing the old image of insufferable yanqui arrogance”
However, Robinson does summarize Obama could have shown more frustration or “anger” or the back of the hand. Someone posted about a new video surfacing of Obama and Chavez. It adds perspective and it appears Obama did just that.

It’s not the 2012 Republicans that
paint Obama as weak it’s his Actions
that clearly paint him as weak.
This is about facts not politics!
President Obama sent a
conciliatory DVD to Iran in January
and the Iranians have responded by
continuing their nuclear program and
ignoring our protest.
Obama warned North Korea not to
launch its missile a couple of weeks
ago and they ignored him and did it
anyway.
President Obama sat in Trinidad and
listened to Daniel Ortega attack the
U.S. for 45 minutes and offered
defense fo this country or any protest
whatsoever.
Mr Obama’s talk must be backed up by
military muscle otherwise it’s just
idle chatter. Blah, Blah, Blah!

student driver: You are what the Republican party loves….uninformed and don’t know why and for what you pay for with your taxes. It is the responsiblity of the Government to look our for the best interest of their people. Either in War, or domestic issues that are affect it’s people. This has never happened with the past “phonies” and rip-off artist in office. A city should not drown, a bridge should not fall, no children should be born without healthcare and a chance at life.(read my other comment about the parents jobs) nutrition and etc. But the Idiots repukes make recieving help such as Food Stamps a divisive and race issue. yet send food all over the world. America needs to Look at HERSELF. I didn’t see or hear President Obama apologizing for anything…I saw him take Responsibility in the UK….and if you’re to immature to think that America is perfect without some of the blame to bear…..You certainly are well Misinformed. Get ready for the Grown UP world. It’s coming

“Bullying isn’t Strength”. I have to go to work and will be happy to know my taxes are being well spent to make my Country Truly Strong….My daughter will need 5600.00 for her next semester as an out of state student. I wished I had my taxes back from Bush’s pension .

sngeorgia:
Wow, not real sure where to begin…
While National Healthcare is a great concept, I do not believe it is the role of our gov’t to provide such a service. Let’s face it, most of the services provided really should either have better rules or have their current rules enforced. There are people living off of both my taxes and yours for their entire lives. Do I want to provide them healthcare as well? Not really. Is it fair to the children? This is a grey area. It is not my responsibilty to provide for other people’s children. I have three of my own that I have to provide for. I do not expect anyone else to pay for anything they need. It is my responsibility as a parent to do so. If the parent is unwilling to get off their butts to provide for their family, the children should be taken away. Place them in a home where they are actually taken care of and provided for. Then, they will have insurance and their parents will not be living off as much of our taxes as they would be had the children stayed in the home.
As far as taxes go, do you support Cap-and-Trade as put forth by Obama?
And the cost of education. I assume you are speaking of secondary education? If so, you are correct. At this level, these are either private or state-funded schools. That is something you need to take up with the State of Georgia.
What’s the point to educate people for manufacturing jobs? Thanks to NAFTA, they’re all overseas. There used to be a job for everyone, no matter what someone’s education was…now, unless you have a degree, finding a job that will at least allow you to live comfortably is nearly impossible.
Your tax dollars were not squandered on tax cuts for the wealthy. Your taxes were cut as well, if you would recall correctly.
I mostly agree with you on the Iraq war, but I believe the Afgan war was justified.
Our weaponry is not ‘out-dated.’ We have the most advanced military in the world. Sure, what you see is pretty old technology…but remember, there’s a lot more that we have that you do not know about. The F-117 was developed and flying long before the first Iraq war, but that was the first time the public learned of it. Sure, taxes suck…but that was the point of the Tea Parties that were held. Did you attend one?
Yes, our elected officials have lost sight of what they are sent to Washington to do. Again, part of the whole ‘tea party’ movement. Get the career politicians out of Washington and elect people who will truly represent their constituents.
I agree, Obama shouldn’t have walked out or over-reacted, but a reaction would have been justified. The whole ‘why blame me for something that happened when I was 3 months old’ argument is, well, childish. He represents a nation. He is not there to represent himself alone. True, nothing would have been gained by shouting and publicly humiliating these people, but small, unmistakable symbols of displeasure would have been great. If he did, excellent. I haven’t seen the video that you are referencing. That will have to wait until after work.

I have to say Romney sounds like an hysterical partisan.
I’m starting to think I should join the Republican Party because I could do a better job dissenting from Obama’s policies than the whack jobs who are currently filling the airwaves with their ad hominum attacks and transparently partisan jabs. Maybe I could give seminars in rational argument and putting country before Party. Memo to Republicans: if you want a future, at least try to appear to want America to succeed.

ReaganFan…..stop living in the past…My point is I don’t care who said what and where….my point is that America is already “WEAK” as the result of the previous President’s policies, that the courts placed in office. Why in the world do you think the world walked during this war(s). We Americans values Truth and Integrity from our elected officials, and why would other countries expect anything less from us? I smile at my adversaries daily…I’m not going to not talk to them, or even help with a project that will benefit all. I am neither naive or stupid…. So talking with my adversaries makes me Weak! Bullying will make me weak, Bullying by a President will make Us weak. While Bush was Loud Mouthing Bullying, yes North Korea and Iran was quietly getting stronger. What Diplomacy did he have to strengthen America…..and the results?. He also cozied up and “kissed and looked into his eyes”….. we were “Weakened” the world laughed at him…Russia didn’t even Respond period… then other countries slowly but surely withdrew their forces…Blair left the scene…voted out….and it was only “Cheney and Bush” left to defend this “shi!( still trying too, watch him on FOX) The world knew he had Blown…and Weakened us…the insurgents are beginning to fight again because they’re not getting Paid off anymore in Iraq…..with his ‘cowboy diplomacy, was this smart or Stong? Neither.

Mr. Obama will provide us wonderful entertainment during the next several years with the Pirate trial. It will be a media blowout, better than the OJ trial. And then he wants to bring the detainees from Gitmo here for trial as well.
The pirate’s mom, who will soon be here too, says he is only 16. Perhaps we should demand to see a copy of his original birth certificate. While we are at it, maybe we should demand to see a copy of Mr. Obama’s original birth certificate on file in Hawaii.

Angie,
They ‘get off’ because of freedom of speech. Just because their ‘approval rating’ isn’t high in polls doesn’t mean that they cannot share their opinions. There’s nothing wrong with someone disagreeing with you. I have made several arguments without calling anyone names or insulting anyone, but for some reason others cannot show the same respect. THAT is the problem. Who won the election, who lost, the acorn, it’s bush’s fault, birth certificate BS is all pointless. If you can make a valid argument without the insults, the do so. If not, keep the immature comments to yourselves.

Let’s see….We have just finished 8 years of a GOP President. In that time, we made numerous enemies abroad, engaged in an elective war, the President was never able (except Africa) to go abroad that did not cause riots/demonstrations/etc in every land he went to to protest his policies.
Now we have a Democratic President who is very popular with folks abroad. He has almost totally repaired relations with Cuba and Venzuela with more to come. NK remains a problem. That is not too shabby for the first 80 days.
If the GOP candidates continue this policy of just bashing Obama as their main issue, they will remain a minor national party.

Weak Presidents. Bush tortured kids that makes him strong, he lied for 8 years, was scared when 9/11 hit and was often drunk while addressing the World and US citizens. Bush was rude, disrespectful and used God’s Name for sin.
President Obama uses the values Americans were raised with manner, respect, honesty and Christian moral values. Is that wrong are we so sick we want to follow the Republicans. Kennedy stopped a Nuclear War by shaking the hand of the Russian President was that wrong. Reagan had to shake hands with World Leaders America called enemies was that wrong. It’s clear nothing President Obama does will please Republicans as their consumed with hate and Greed. But people do have a choice to either follow those that hate and steal or accept a man who is trying to help the US and all the citizens out of the mess Bush/Cheney got us in. Just think if Republicans are allowed to continue to feed hate soon they will turn on each other.
Posted by: Jackie Rawlings | April 21, 2009, 1:12 pm 1:12 pm
Jackie,
Respect is not given, it’s earned. Saying ‘we won’ does not earn anyone’s respect at all. Saying that N Korea better not launch their rocket and then, after they do, do nothing at all does not gain respect. Empty threats do not gain respect out of anyone. If you say you are going to do something, do it. If not, be a man and admit it.
Christian Moral values do not include federal funding for ebryonic stem cell research or funds for abortions.
The mess we are currently in was not created in 8 years. It was created over a much longer period of time.
The problem with Obama shaking hands with these people is that no one knows where he stands. Neither Kennedy nor Reagan ever criticized America by calling her/us arrogant. Kennedy did not stop a nuclear war by shaking anyone’s hand.
Republicans, in general, are not consumed with hate and greed. You have just as many far right republicans as you do far left democrats. Both are filled with hate and greed. Both are wrong.

stdntdrvr,
The United States wasnt the ONLY country that told Nkorea not to launch their ‘rocket’. That so-called launch was a failure. The closest country that would have been affected would be Japan, who should have retaliated. Why would Obama want to involve his army in another senseless war?
Chavez called Obama ignorant, but was all over him at the summit. Ortega blasted the US about the past…you wanted Obama to go on a p*ssing contest? There is a time and a place for everything. You see him as being weak, others see him as saying ‘you go ahead and rant like a petulent child-and see how much attention that gets you’
I am so disappointed when I hear Republicans say that because Obama didnt behave like a bully he’s weak. Where is the conservatism? Where is the Christ-like behaviour? Where is the adult behaviour?

Obama IS a wimp! You don’t negotiate with the enemy! You defeat him! Since he has never served, and doesn’t have a military mind, he will make bad choices in this area! Beside the fact that he’s a rookie senator and doesn’t have the wisdom or experience for being president; expecially in these days; but here he is America! He really hasn’t accomplished anything! Just more of the same old bull ****! What do you think of your empty worded, empty headed superhero now America? All talk! No results!

the days of old white guys are over. they have no ideas – are out of touch with the rest of us and are very very crabby! they don’t understand why obama is so popular -and are scared about their future in politics – Pat Buchanan on MSNBC last night was screaming about something that happened in the l930′s. He hates Obama and keeps referring to “My country” like the rest of us don’t live here. Give it up Pat – you and the republicans don’t count anymore. Meggie McCain was right when she said republians are scared. they should be.

Shamaedene,
No one said we should go to war with N Korea, but do something. Freeze their assets, quit sending aid, whatever you can do…do it. Do not make threats and then 2 weeks later act like nothing happened. Sure, the rocket fell into the ocean, but it wasn’t a completely failed launch. Things were learned and they also learned how far they could push Obama.
I never said Obama should get into a p!ssing contest with anyone. I stated that he should have given small, unmistakable symbols of displeasure.
One doesn’t need to act like a bully to display strength.

Let Republicans take their best shot at making the President look “weak.”
President Obama has no problem making Republicans look stupid………with their full cooperation, of course.
The Republican Party is morally and intellectually bankrupt. It’s unlikely it will get un-stupid any time soon.
Posted by: Sammy | April 21, 2009, 3:06 pm 3:06 pm
Stdntdrvr,
‘They also learned how far to push Obama?’ Russia and China are the ones who should have been doing more. They have been NKorea’s closest allies-economic and otherwise. Yet there was a strong declaration from ALL FIVE permanent members condemning that launch. Besides, the fact that we havent been hearing anything about it yet, doesnt mean there isnt work going on behind the scenes.
If you look at the pictures when Obama was being presented with the book, he wasnt overjoyed. Yet, he did not look like he was ill-mannered. Should he have been ill-mannered?
And my point exactly – ‘One doesnt need to act like a bully to display strength’
Posted by: Shamaedene | April 21, 2009, 3:08 pm 3:08 pm
One more thing: The question should be asked of Chavez – ‘Why would you want to be associated with an idiot like Obama? Why would you want to be seen as smiling with him;shaking his hand? Why would you want to re-establish diplomatic relations with his government? Who’s the bigger idiot?
During the primaries, I heard some things said about Obama by HILARY CLINTON and her supporters and vice-versa – yet she is now his Sec of State working together for the betterment of the US. That goes to show the kind of man you have as President. Like it or not – the cowboy days are over.
Posted by: Shamaedene | April 21, 2009, 3:15 pm 3:15 pm
…and you think China and Russia are going to do anything to N Korea? No. They never have and never will. All they do is slap N Korea on the hand and say ‘you better not do that again.’ I’m sure there are discussions going on…and they never lead anywhere. We should have sent in our special forces to make sure it never made it off the ground. They wouldn’t have known who did it. That way, none of this would really matter.
In my opinion, Obama should have told him to just sit the book on the table…and he should have left it there. That’s just my .02 …there’s a way to do things without the use of harsh words or weapons…and they tend to get under people’s skin a lot more.
Posted by: stdntDrvr | April 21, 2009, 3:17 pm 3:17 pm
I didn’t condone the ‘cowboy days.’ Sure, there is a time and place for that kind of action…and now is not the time. Afghanistan was a good use, but there hasn’t been a time/place since.
Yes, Chavez is an idiot, that’s a given…but he’s also a very harsh dictator…along the lines of S.Hussien.
Obama isn’t a saint, either. He said some things about his competitors as well as every other group of people. Need I remind you to the ‘clinging to their bibles and guns’ comment? Appointing Clinton as Sec. of State doesn’t make him a good person…it takes a lot more that just that.

Only a Republican could think that dialogue is a bad thing….

Obama made clear that he intends no abdication of American leadership, but rather a new atmosphere of mutual respect.
He’s setting the stage and revealing new expectations – his new policy to the rest of the world. It was in complete contrast to the rude behavior of Chavez and Ortega. This time Obama did not need to ignore them or walk out to prove his point.
Weakness? Haven’t any Republican ding dongs read the Art of War?

We just ended the 2008 election and now we are on to 2012? I think we need to pace ourselves here!
Cheney, Rove and the whole lot would do well to keep their collective mouths shut. I think Obama is trying to keep them from being prosecuted and they are too stupid (or cocky) to realize it! I don’t agree with Obama on this, and I think it will come back to bite him someday. I say prosecute them all!

Choosing Hilary Clinton makes him a SMART PERSON!!!
Look at it this way…Obama wants help from the international community on Afghanistan. His mantra in Europe is that we need to WORK TOGETHER. Would you think it wise for him to go run off on a tangent WITHOUT those very people’s help he wants? Think strategically and be honest…would that be wise?
Look at Iraq..Osama Bin Laden is NOT in Iraq; was not a friend or ally of Saddam Hussein yet Bush went there..Mission accomplished?
Plus Obama placed the book on the table. He didnt hug it up for the rest of the seminar. I’m sorry, but it appears that it is expected that he be devoid of all decency and lash out against the guy…again where is the conservatism? Where is the christ-like behaviour?

“Keep your friends close. and your enemies even closer” Bush never seemed to understand the intelligent logic of that sentence. He was all about bluster and alienation….where did that get us? Obama has a far greater understanding of human psychology then the right could ever understand.

Well it appears from the blogs both during the election and now after, that the average American got what he wanted and is happy with what he got and as a democratic country that of course is their right.
Unfortunately power doesent take any notice of labels, it just is and has its own set of rules which you and your President have elected to break or are so naive you dont even know that you are breaking them.
Bottom line is bye bye USA, you may as well sell all your stealth fighters, nuclear submarines etc – you are obviously never going to use them and in a couple of more months they wont even be useful as a threat as you become the biggest paper tiger in world history.
As a consequence you will also become an irrelevance in world politics.
China will not only outstrip you in economic terms, in terms of political clout it is already laying the groundwork to have more influence than you in South America, Africa and reasonably soon looks like, thanks to fuzzy feel good stances by USA, NZ and Australia in the South Pacific will control that area.
Chinese are pragmatists, the current culture in USA is of dreamers and the dreamers will end the great American dream and seal the end of your World Power cycle, achieved from within, just as was the decline of the Roman Empire.

What prognosticator of the future told you this? America will become “irrelevant” in world politics? And somehow our President broken “the rules of power” in 3 months?
Tell us about China’s history of drought, famine and overpopulation – apply that to your future prognostications in a drier, hotter world. Paper tiger? Know thyself.

You can help end global poverty by calling your Senator and telling them to support the Global Food Security Act. It gives $500 million in food aid where it’s needed most.
Tell them all the money that just got saved on military cuts can now go towards saving the world. Congressional staffs record all these calls – even 20 can sway a Senator’s vote!

Please think twice and read the bill before flooding your congressional representatives with phone calls about the Global Food Security Act. Although the Global Food Security Act may be well-intentioned, it DOES NOT address the root causes of hunger and is little more than a band-aide. There are better, more sustainable ways to combat hunger. Please visit http://www.foodfirst.org/ to learn why some are opposed to this measure!

I am an Independent – neither Demo or Rep. I wish we had a third party as I don’t like either one that we have. One thing Bush did was keep us safe after 9/11….I can see that Obama wants to use diplomacy but you can’t be deplomatic with those people. They don’t think like we do – when we are kind – courteous – they think it a weakness – they have for centuries, the only difference now is that they have guns where before they had swords…it’s that simple.

Gerry Sinclair:
The rise of China has been coming for a decade now. Have you been asleep? You are actually blaming the rise of China and the decline of the U.S on this pres. who has’nt even completed 100 days? You mean you did’nt understand what’s been going on in the world for the past decade.? This is old news. Bush actually facilitated the rise of China, by making us indebted to them forever, and weakening our economy thru our trade policies with them. I personally boycott anything made in China as a means of protest.

The more republicans attack President Obama the more likely it is that he is going to get really really fed up and drop a dime on them. Many of us were terrified the whole time Bush and Cheney were doing crazy horrible things and might do something worse at any time. We now have a very sane, very honest, very intelligent and very forgiving president. Most of us are not very forgiving. We know what a total failure Bush was. We know what a total failure his administration was, as were the republican members of Congress and the Senate. It was the complete failure of republicans that made it possible for President Obama to get in there and begin the huge job and fixing the Bush mess. Republicans rant and throw hissy fits that show how sorry they are. They are not concerned about the crisis in America. They just want to treat Obama just the same as they treated all other Democratic presidents. That is the republican party – mean, hateful, spiteful, deceitful, evil and sneering.

Coming soon to a state near you…
Many Mexicans and many Hispanics in the United States are now asking to re-examine the Treaty of Hildago, and the Gadsten Purchase. They are asking that a group of independent countries examine these treaties, and judge the “fairness” and recommend appropriate measures to assure “equity”. These treaties ceded California, Arizona, Nevada, parts of Colorado, and parts of New Mexico to the United States in the 1800′s. This movement is gathering strength. What will be our Citizen of the World’s response?

Apparently Republicans haven’t read the memo that the world has entered a new era in geopolitics.
In the 20th century, the main threat to international security was superpower conflict – in this century, the seriously dangerous problem is failing states. You know, states like Somalia, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Pakistan and of course Afghanistan and Iraq.
Countries like these fail when national governments cannot provide personal security, food, education and healthcare. Law and order disintegrates. Failing states are a source of terrorists, pirates, drugs, weapons and refugees, threatening countries everywhere. Hello Republicans? Ring a bell?
With human population exceeding 6 Billion for the first time, and demand for grain rising faster than supplies, civilization requires a functioning NETWORK of ALL countries to control disease, manage our monetary system, control terrorism and reach mutual goals such as food distribution and population control.
The Obama administration is not “weak” – it is acting with the knowledge that America needs to communicate and discover new ways to work with other countries. All are at risk regardless of politics: Cuba, Venezuela, Iran, North Korea, Mexico, China, and even the United States. If enough worldwide states fail it threatens global civilization as we know it.

Republicans and their ugly partisan rhetoric crack me up. Find a word like “weak” and they all jump on the bandwagon. The only thing weak here is the Republican party, who is rapidly sinking into irrelevance. This is a party that chose to ignore the rest of the world while they focused lock-step on Iraq. Meanwhile, Russia’s influence was growing; our debt to China was growing; and our world standing sank like a stone. “keep your friends close and your enemies closer”. Yeah, I think Obama is doing just fine. He’s finding out that alot of these obnoxious leaders had less of an issue with the U.S. and more of an issue with Bush, who was a complete failure in foreign relations.

The only way the United States will learn is when North Korea, or Iran drop a nuclear bomb on either the United States or one of our allies. But then there is also the possibility of a terrorist organization detonating a dirty bomb or several in cities across the United States.

Obama is weak. All Obama cares about is his image. He should have been cosying up to the ‘good guys’ in latin america, not the dictators who run their countries into the ground.
And the Republican party are only doing now what the DNC did after Bush got elected twice. moveon.org made it their mission to smear Bush and any GOP (they still do) but you liberals are so blind that you dont see the other side of the story, just the propoganda spewed at you by moveon.org. Sad little people that you are!

sngeorgia:
The courts didn’t put Bush in office
they stopped the Democrats from stealing
the election although it appears they
have succeeded in stealing the
Minnesota Senate election of 2008.
Although I disagree with you I
respect your opinion.
Let’s say I accept your criticism of
Bush how does that vindicate what
President Obama is doing?
He sent a conciliatory DVD to Iran
and says he wants to talk to its
leaders. How have they responded?
Did they stop their nuclear program?
The president warned North Korea not
to launch its missile and they
totally ignored him and broke off the
6 party talks.
The president acted respectfuly and
friendly during his interactions with
Hugo Chavez, Daniel Ortega, etc and
what did that get him?
A 50 minute denounciation of this
country by Ortega and not a word in
defense of his country from Obama!
As you correctly stated President Bush
was very naive and friendly with
Putin of Russia and the people of
the Republic of Georgia have paid the
price for that error in judgement.
Talk alone cannot make the North
Koreans and the Iranians give up their
nuclear ambitions.
Talk alone will not make the Castros
release political prisoners and
advance human rights.
Ditto for Hugo Chavez.
I get that you don’t like “bullying”
but our talks with these brutal
dictators must be backed up by the
threat of our military might.
Giving them economic aid will only
prop up their totalitarian regimes.

Peter in order to respond to your posting it would be nice to have your definition of success.
I am assuming that because you are a failure you understand this definition
Why did I put you in this category – I believe we are at a point in history where wisdom needs to be exercised further – I would appreciate if you will take some time out – Go to the Library and have a good read on previous empires – the outline would be to research the collapse of previous civilization.
I don’t expect to open your mind but please help yourself and get some well rounded education – and just for the record I happen to believe that the President is on the right track I do hope you belong to the future and you are not stuck in the past.
And by the way – he is not a US citizen he is from Xanadu.

Is it possible there was so much George Soros instigated Bush bashing throughout the last 8 years that people can’t even think objectively or clearly about the situation? It also had an effect on how we were viewed in the world if our media is seen to be bashing our own president continually. I don’t think the current President will fare well internationally either for some of the same reasons.
Soros did state in a Cavuto interview that he would spend everything it took to take down Bush. And he has profited greatly in the economic crash of our country. Over a Billion! It almost seems as if our Presidents don’t quite have their hands on the controls. Pres Obamba and Emanuel and Holder all said they wouldn’t prosecute the lawyers that wrote the CIA memos and the very next day a complete turnaround. Why?

Strange. Weakness to Republicans is
1. defined as not coming up with the greatest torture compilation of our times.
2. NOT cheating and lying to the nation about WMD
3. NOT mislading the country into a needless war and spending billions of dollars.
4. NOT killing by masses in wars.
5. NOT leading the country into a deeper economic crisis.
6. NOT be dishonorable and dishonest…
