Basketball, Books, and Bunnies: the Obama’s First Easter Egg Roll

ABC News’ Yunji de Nies and Sunlen Miller report:

The President and First Lady, along with daughters Malia and Sasha greeted the crowd of parents and children – along with Elmo, Clifford the Big Red Dog and Papa Smurf – on the South Lawn for the Obama’s first Easter egg roll at the White House.

“How about that,” the president commented as he approached he and his family emerged on the Truman balcony to see the nearly 30,000 people gathered on the South Lawn for the day’s annual festivities.

Fergie, of the Black Eyed Peas, sang the national anthem to kick off the events, afterward giving the President a hug and could be heard saying, "come to my show."

The President, wearing a jacket and no tie, then spoke but only got one word out before the microphone died. The president playfully pretended to test out the ear of the life-sized Easter bunny to see if his ear would have more luck broadcasting sound that the other defunct microphones.

After a few awkward moments, the Obama’s oldest daughter, Malia stepped to the mic for her own test and said, “"Is it on? Oh yeah,” when her trial worked, gaining praise from her sister who said, "go Malia!".

"Hello everybody that’s Malia, our technical advisor," the President joked.

President Obama welcomed the crowd and said seeing all the children warms the First family’s heart because, "It reminds us that this is the people’s house."

He said his "sole job," today was" to introduce, my first lady, your first lady Michelle Obama."

The First Lady, dressed in a green shirt, blue jacket and seersucker capri pants and silver flats then addressed the crowd.

"Our goal today is just to have fun,” she said, "We want everybody to think about moving their bodies."

This year’s Easter Egg Roll theme is "Let’s Go Play," with an emphasis on health and fitness.  In addition to the traditional egg roll, there are a variety of activity stations. There is a kids’ kitchen and organic garden, a sports court with basketball and soccer, the "Hop to it!" area featuring jump rope, dance and yoga, a story time stage, and an arts and crafts station cleverly called "Eggpress Yourself."

The Obama’s youngest daughter, Sasha standing next to her mom, chimed in adding “tennis” to the list of sports she wanted to play.

“We don’t have tennis.  It’s on the tennis court.  The peanut gallery back here,” the Fist lady quipped to her youngest daughter.

The First Family walked down the steps of the South Portico to the lawn. After greeting a group of children lined up to roll their eggs, Malia and Sasha took their places in the roll, and the President blew the opening whistle, and at one point aided a small child coming in last to help roll her egg over the finish line.

The family then moved to the reading station. The President read a pretty wild and boisterous version of “Where the Wild Things Are” – complete with sound affects, and a little acting which may have scared a few children in the audience.

“You scared him” the first lady remarked to her husband.

“It’s alright,” the president said to the children, “You end up back in your bed room and your supper’s still waiting for you.”

With one last growl to the children the President then handed over the floor to the first lady and the first grandma – with an assist in showing off the pages of the book by Malia and Sasha –  to read, “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” to the crowd.

Afterward the hoopster-in-chief- went to the basketball station where kids were shooting pink and white basketballs into two baskets at the end of the court. The President lifted one child up so he could dunk.

The Obama family celebrated Easter more formally yesterday by going to church service at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C for Easter Sunday.

They (Obama and Michelle) are both so very stupid. If Bush did something, they are going to change it. Well, tradition matters and what Michelle Obama wears does not. She looks just like she is suppose to look, like her culture dictates. Go on the streets, you will see every other person dressed just like she dresses. That is her culture, leave her alone and let her wear those outrageous outfits. On the day when we as Christians celebrate the resurrection of our Savious, they celebrate getting anew dog. What does that say about what they believe.

Something about today’s events sounds different than the Bush era. I can’t quite put a finger on it…

Jane:”On the day when we as Christians celebrate the resurrection of our Savious, they celebrate getting anew dog. What does that say about what they believe. ”
Actually, they went to church and in previous remarks discussed quite openly celebrating the resurrection. So what does your false witness say about you?

Jane…..they nor I believe what you believe, and that’s obvious “nothing”. Stop calling yourself a Christian….christians do not speak as you, think as you, or do as you. But, WE’RE NOT stupid. You’re a hypocrite, not a Christian…we see through your kind.

Maybe I should give the German chancellor a “back rub” or a “look in that man’s eyes, and see his soul”, or should I just say “Mission Accomplished”.

“She looks just like she is suppose to look, like her culture dictates.” – posted by Jane.
I don’t even know what that comment of yours means, Jane, and I don’t want to know.
As to the Easter Egg Roll being about “celebrities”… the White House Easter Egg Roll has never been about having a religious ceremony. It’s always been about having fun and, yes, celebrities. During the Bush years, they had Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers at the Easter Egg Roll.
Lighten up.

“dressed in a green shirt, blue jacket and seersucker capri pants and silver flats”
Suure … seersucker and silver flats. Is Obama’s inability to dress herself a belated rebellion against all those years she was slurping at the corporate trough?

“Is Obama’s inability to dress herself a belated rebellion against all those years she was slurping at the corporate trough?”
Or a way to distance herself from Der Won’s creepy uber-WASPishness?
(Dear censors, she DOES dress as though she’s impersonating a street crazy.)

LOL – Jane spouts her Christian moral high ground while demonstrating very anti-Christian behavior. Yes, Easter is about a lot of things and apparently you missed the entire message.

Honestly, the Obamas could poop a gold egg for every child there and some of you STILL would find fault.
It’s an Easter egg roll, enjoy, it’s all in good fun!

Go Figure: Have you read the book “Audicity of Hope”. Of course you haven’t. If you had you would know exactly what I am talking about. So, yes, I am a Christian – not judgemental, but factual. No, I don’t believe in abortion, same-self marriage, nor any of the things that God condemned. So before you go on attack, you should know what you are talking about.

“Audicity of Hope” (obviously not a typo, as you wrote it this way three separate times in separate posts)
“same-self marriage”
Please stop embarrassing yourself, Jane.
BTW, yes, I have read “The Audacity of Hope” as well as “Dreams From My Father”. And it is my considered opinion that you have no idea what you’re talking about.

I must have missed that part of the Bible where God condemns Easter Egg Rolls with celebrities attending. Good thing Jane’s right on top of things, though.

ROFLMAO – Jane states she is “factual” – not “judgmental” while being very judgmental.
Jane – Research the First Council Of Nicea which took place roughly 325 years after Jesus died and return and judge people based on the literal word on everything in the Bible.
btw – I have read Obama’s books. As a Christian, I am able to respect a person even though I may or may not agree with them.

What is the matter with the dissenters? Jane? Judge not, lest ye be judged! They had a party after church on Easter Sunday! We Christians come home from church and our kids hunt for easter eggs, eat candy and colored eggs and the FAMILY is together doing all of it! As Pres. Obama said, it is America’s HOUSE! His actions, her actions now – in that HOUSE; remind yourselves of the LOAD he inherited; to have fun on the lawn on Easter Sunday. I think we have a HUMAN in the Whitehouse again. Someone who is not so rich that he can actually SEE what a common person sees. Perhaps it can finally, again, be AMERICA’s house.
