Biden Has Been Lobbying Specter to Switch Parties — for Five Years

Thanks for the info Jake. Now, could Biden do the same with Snowe, Collins, McCain and Graham?
It would certainly please me no end to see all of them reunited.

I often wonder what would happen to Mrs. Clinton if she switches party.

Specter is going to lose in 2010 anyway. I think there is another person who is a Democratic is going to run for primary election in PA.

He is switching parties, but not changing any policy positions- proving once again that there is one party in America. THE CORPORATE PARTY.

Even the reliably far-left Jonathan Chait is sickened by this guy:
“When a politician switches parties, it’s customary for the party he’s abandoned to denounce him as an unprincipled hack, and the party he’s joined to praise him as a brave convert who’s genuinely seen the light. But I think it’s pretty clear that Specter is an unprincipled hack. If his best odds of keeping his Senate seat lay in joining the Communist party, he’d probably do that.”

Specter has been a moderate Republican since the Republicans had integrity. In the last 20 years, due to the absolute stupidity and arrogance of the likes of Newt Gingrich, Mitch McConnell, and the like, the Republicans have sold their soul to the worst of the right wing: the inadequately educated, overly religious bigots who have never actually read the bible, but think that it should be interpreted literally, and accept without question that the bible says whatever Pat Robertson (or any other fund raising, insincere, pseudo-minister) says it says.
Specter’s change to the democratic party is no real surprise – he’s smarter than any of the “real” Republicans – Not that hard to do, really.

It wasn’t the movement of the GOP to the right that got Specter to switch. It has moved to the left over the past ten years, not to the right. And the party has had it’s current view of Specter for many years — nothing suddenly changed there.
Specter said it was the negative reaction throughout Pennsylvannia to his vote on the stimulus bill that caused him to realize he couldn’t win among Republicans. The stimulus bill, with it’s enormous spending on Democrat political causes and activist groups, is still an irritant among people.
The pro-stimulus votes these Republicans made were mistakes on their part. All four GOP that voted yes knew it was wrong, and will be disasterous in the long-term, but they voted for it anyway for personal aggrandizement reasons.
Anti-stimulus bill feeling throughout the country still packs a real punch. You can see that that was a major impetus for getting people out for the tea parties. People are ready to move in opposition to the spending, but they’re looking for something more than tea parties to do it.

citizen voter, not ‘worker’, Specter lost a lot of his support when over a 100,000 Repub voters left to join the Democratic Party during the last primary. With his moderate base gone Specter didn’t stand a chance of winning the Repub nomination. He has said numerous times that the Repub party was catering to the far right and ignoring their moderate base and he didn’t like it. I can’t blame the guy for switching. The Republican Party just isn’t the same anymore.
