First Lady Michelle Obama thanks DHS employees, Cites Work of Secret Service

ABC News’ Karen Travers reports: First Lady Michelle Obama dropped by the Department of Homeland Security today to thank its employees for their service as part of her tour of federal agencies in Washington. This was the eighth stop on the first lady’s thank you/listening tour. She has already visited HUD, Transportation, Education, Agriculture, Energy, Interior, State and the EPA. As she spoke, Mrs. Obama stood on stage in front a group of agency employees who were selected for their long tenure of government service, including two uniformed members of the Coast Guard and an officer from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). At each agency visit, the first lady makes a point to meet privately with a smaller group of staffers before she delivers remarks, and has asked to meet with the longest-serving staff members. When she visited the Department of Interior in February, some of the employees she spoke with had worked there for nearly 40 years. Aides say Mrs. Obama plans to get to every federal agency over the next few months. First Lady Notes "Excellence" of Secret Service This morning, the first lady cited the work done by the different agencies that come under the large umbrella of DHS, including the Transportation Security Administration, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Coast Guard and Citizen, Immigration Services and FEMA. Mrs. Obama had a special mention for the Secret Service, which operates under DHS and is responsible for the presidential protective detail. “Every day I see how hard they work. Every day I see how much time they spend away from their own families to keep mine safe,” the first lady said. “And it has been an honor to get to know each and every one of them throughout the course of the campaign, and our day-to-day interactions. They represent the utmost of excellence, and we are so honored to have them serving alongside of us.” The first lady noted that because so much of the work protecting the nation takes place behind the scenes, if the nearly 200,000 DHS employees perform their jobs well, “nobody will know what you do.” As a result, she said the purpose of her visit was to make sure their services “don’t go unappreciated” and these public servants “don’t get lost behind the numbers and the magnitude of the mission.” Mrs. Obama worked the crowd following her remarks, shaking hands and taking pictures with DHS employees while U2′s “Beautiful Day” played. — Karen Travers

Why is there so much more obsession with what Michelle says and does than there was over what Laura said and did?

Ryan, you’re proof that Michelle was right when she said America is downright mean.
Is she proud of her country yet?

It’s no doubt a sweet coincidence that Michelle is glowing over the DHS which just suggested that US military vets are the new danger to this country.

drjohn:”DHS which just suggested that US military vets are the new danger to this country.”
Yeah, how dare they look at proven history. For goodness sake, Timothy McVeigh wasn’t that long ago – they’d be incompetent not to recognize the proven threat of unbalanced right-wingers, just like they recognize the proven threat of unbalanced left wingers (ALF, ELF, etc).

Did Michelle thank personally the DHS authors of the hit piece against rightwingers for believe it or not the extremism of espousing “reject federal authority in favor of state or local authority…or dedicated to a single-issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration”

“It’s no doubt a sweet coincidence that Michelle is glowing over the DHS which just suggested that US military vets are the new danger to this country.”
Nope, the DHS report on right wing lunatics called right wing extremists who are military vets dangerous.
In 5 days, it will be the anniversary of the worst domestic terrorist attack in the history of this country.
That attack was carried out by a right wing lunatic who had served during the 1st Gulf War.

How sad, Mrs. Obama compliments and thanks an agency and still some of you find fault. Says more about you and your issues don’t you think!

Laura Bush was a real lady. Michelle Obama just wants attention as does her husband. They could (and particularly her, want anything but attention) Did you tell them she is now proud of her country? Well, we are not proud of her. And by the way, as everyone knows, CNN and ABC make the polls be what they want them to be. There is absolutely no class to Michelle Obama. One day she acts like a high school drop out and another dayshe tries to do something to get attention called to her.

You must have enjoyed the part of the DHS report which repeated that it had absolutely no data to support its assertions.

Posted by: drjohn | April 14, 2009, 2:08 pm 2:08 pm

This is what it says, Ryan:
“The possible passage of new restrictions on firearms and the return of military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities could lead to the potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks.”

This is what it says, Ryan:
“The possible passage of new restrictions on firearms and the return of military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities could lead to the potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks.”
Hmmmm how come that passage is the only part quopted on all the right wing nutjob websites?
Here’s the rest
— (U//FOUO) Proposed imposition of firearms restrictions and weapons bans
likely would attract new members into the ranks of rightwing extremist groups,
as well as potentially spur some of them to begin planning and training for
violence against the government. The high volume of purchases and
stockpiling of weapons and ammunition by rightwing extremists in anticipation
of restrictions and bans in some parts of the country continue to be a primary
concern to law enforcement.
— (U//FOUO) Returning veterans possess combat skills and experience that are
attractive to rightwing extremists. DHS/I&A is concerned that rightwing
extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to boost their violent capabilities.
Considering that some of the worst domestic terrorists fit that exact descritption is not earth shattering.
Timothy McVeigh was a vet of the Gulf War before he bombed the OKC.
His buddy Nichols served with him.
Eric Rudolph who shot abortions doctors and bombed the Olympics also served.
This was not a a slam against veterans.
It was a warning about right wing extremists recruiting them .
Its no different from the reports that gangs have been using the military as a training ground.

drjohn:”As though this is new? Ayers was not any different from McVeigh. They’re both left wingers.”
McVeigh murdered 168 people including 19 children and injured 450 people. Ayers killed 0 people. McVeigh’s only documented affiliation was as a registered Republican and his motivation for the mass murder read like a Rush Limbaugh transcript (he said that he blew up the federal building to avenge Waco and Ruby Ridge, and that when Congress banned assault weapons “I snapped”).
Do you SERIOUSLY believe that McVeigh, murderer of 168 is just like Ayers, murderer of 0?

Its a 10 page summary report with portions that were declassified.
Here’s some facts for you.
Federal authorities this year mounted one of the most extensive investigations of domestic terrorism since the Oklahoma City bombing, CBS 11 has learned.
Three people linked to white supremacist and anti-government groups are in custody. At least one weapon of mass destruction – a sodium cyanide bomb capable of delivering a deadly gas cloud – has been seized in the Tyler area.
Investigators have seized at least 100 other bombs, bomb components, machine guns, 500,000 rounds of ammunition and chemical agents. But the government also found some chilling personal documents indicating that unknown co-conspirators may still be free to carry out what appeared to be an advanced plot. And, authorities familiar with the case say more potentially deadly cyanide bombs may be in circulation.

You know I am not. If you can read, you can see that he is lumping usual routine political disagreement between dems and repubs, on things like the economy and 2nd amendment as radical extremist positons. If you are not following his party line you are a threat and an extremist. He also provides no proof that militias are increasing, he just supposes that this is what republicans will turn into.
The homeland security department has lumped all conservative or republican political positions into the same pot as militias, while openly admitting in the report they have no proof of such.
It is an assault on american citizens. It is fear-mongering propaganda, clearly intended to promote hatred and divisiveness between citizens.
Read the examples from the report that I posted. Obama, and Janet Napolitano, are politicizing the government in a manner never before imagined.

DHS reports that these so called extremists can be single issue extremist
I am including some segments of this assault on american citizens report from Obama and homeland security. I will note the parts where they could not help but call us racists and anti-semites.
This is an outrage, but read these excerpts for yourself. Please note, they openly admit in the report that they have no proof for any of this. That is propaganda at it’s finest.
(U//FOUO) This product is one of a series of intelligence assessments published by the DHS
Extremism and Radicalization Branch to facilitate a greater understanding of the
phenomenon of violent radicalization in the United
(U) Illegal Immigration
(U//FOUO) Rightwing extremists were concerned during the 1990s with the perception
that illegal immigrants were taking away American jobs through their willingness to
work at significantly lower wages. They also opposed free trade agreements, arguing that
these arrangements resulted in Americans losing jobs to countries such as Mexico.
U) Legislative and Judicial Drivers
(U//FOUO) Many rightwing extremist groups perceive recent gun control legislation as a
threat to their right to bear arms and in response have increased weapons and ammunition
stockpiling, as well as renewed participation in paramilitary training exercises. Such
activity, combined with a heightened level of extremist paranoia, has the potential to
facilitate criminal activity and violence.
(U//FOUO) Rightwing extremist views bemoan the decline of U.S. stature and
have recently focused on themes such as the loss of U.S. manufacturing capability
to China and India, Russia’s control of energy resources and use of these to
pressure other countries, and China’s investment in U.S. real estate and
corporations as a part of subversion strategy.
(of course they play the old racist canard, while openly admitting they have no proof for anything in the report,,,, that is called PROPAGANDA)
Especially note the following excerpt:
“It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single-issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration,” the warning says.
It says the federal government “will be working with its state and local partners over the next several months” to gather information on “rightwing extremist activity in the United States.”
This is an open warning that this Obama administration will be spying on those that have any disagreement with any of their policies, under the guise of “they could be extremists!”

Posted by: MNM | April 14, 2009, 3:06 pm 3:06 pm

“So why are you flipping out about a report about right wing extremists?”
I do not believe any of us posting on this report so far are “flipping out” but the report lacks precise definition of the new “right wing extremists” except for the rather broad statement I noted, again “reject federal authority in favor of state or local authority…or dedicated to a single-issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration”
Oddly it sees a rise of anti-Semitism among the right, when only the blind cannot see its rise in the odd alliance between leftists and mullahs as typified by none other than the failed intelligence agency nominee Charles Freeman.

Obama has openly declared war on 1/3 of the US population. He will use this report to spy on anyone who disagrees with him. Or to shut down any opposition groups under the guise of threat to security.
The reality is that the opposition is a threat to his political security and like most dictators that cannot be tolerated.
The report cites single issue differences such as taxes, or immigration, or gun rights differences as qualifying for threat.
This is an unprecedented attack on democracy and a politicization of government on a lever never before imagined.
This is dangerous to the extreme (no pun intended)
Obama and Janet Napolitano at homeland security have laid the foundation to use the government, police forces and military, (their words) to combat any opposition to their agenda.
They will use the report as a basis for domestic spying. He is quite the dictator, isn’t he.
If anyone thinks this is really about radicals being republican criminals I would suggest that we go to the jails and do a political headcount, it is not an argument democrats would win. However there is no corresponding general anti-democrat report being produced, it is a political hit-job.
OBAMA NOW NEEDS TO BE IMPEACHED. THIS IS AN UNPRECEDENTED ABUSE OF POWER. HE HAS DECLARED A WAR WITHIN THE US

“Read the examples from the report that I posted.”
No, I will tell people to go read the whole report which is basically an unclassified summary because people like you take it out of context.
For example
“Especially note the following excerpt:
“It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single-issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration,” the warning says.”
Now the whole quote
* (U) Rightwing extremism in the United States can be broadly divided into those groups, movements, and
adherents that are primarily hate-oriented (based on hatred of particular religious, racial or ethnic groups), and those that are mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely. It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration.
Let’s get into some of the anti-abortion nuts.
July 4, 2005: A clinic Palm Beach, Florida was the target of an arson. The case remains open.
December 12, 2005: Patricia Hughes and Jeremy Dunahoe threw a Molotov cocktail at a clinic in Shreveport, Louisiana. The device missed the building and no damage was caused. In August 2006, Hughes was sentenced to six years in prison, and Dunahoe to one year. Hughes claimed the bomb was a “memorial lamp” for an abortion she had had there.
September 13, 2006 David McMenemy of Rochester Hills, Michigan crashed his car into the Edgerton Women’s Care Center in Davenport, Iowa. He then doused the lobby in gasoline and then started a fire. McMenemy committed these acts in the belief that the center was performing abortions, however Edgerton is not an abortion clinc.
April 25, 2007: A package left at a women’s health clinic in Austin, Texas contained an explosive device capable of inflicting serious injury or death. A bomb squad detonated the device after evacuating the building. Paul Ross Evans (who had a criminal record for armed robbery and theft) was found guilty of the crime.
May 9, 2007: An unidentified person deliberately set fire to a Planned Parenthood clinic in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
December 6, 2007: Chad Altman and Sergio Baca were arrested for the arson of Dr. Curtis Boyd’s clinic in Albuquerque. Altman’s girlfriend had scheduled an appointment for an abortion at the clinic.
January 22, 2009 Matthew L. Derosia, 32, who was reported to have had a history of mental illness [22]rammed a SUV into the front entrance of a Planned Parenthood clinic in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Or how about this
The first letters claiming to contain anthrax were mailed to U.S. clinics in October 1998, a few days after the Slepian shooting, and since then, there have been a total of 655 such bioterror threats made against abortion providers. None of the “anthrax” in these cases was real.

Robert,
We may disagree on many things but please read the report versus the hysterical paranoia being posted.
Here is the whole section of that you mention
* (U) Rightwing extremism in the United States can be broadly divided into those groups, movements, and

Nothing you write negates that this is an assault on anyone who disagrees with Obama.
They do not qualify the following in any manner whatsoever
“It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration.”
So what that it is at the end of the paragraph, a careful reading reveals this statement intended to stand on it’s own.
You and the report then follow with a litany of crimes. I would suggest that if we had to list republican criminals vs democrat criminals the numbers would not even be close. democrats would lose that argument hands down.
The report uses that list of criminals, as an incendiary tactic to paint all those who disagree with our dictator obama as criminals, even if they disagree on single issue.
It is a political hit job. It is the politicization of government on a level never before imagined.
It is the foundation of their excuse for what will be spying on anyone who disagrees with them, even on a single issue.
It is the antithesis of anything the US ever stood for.

What do you know! The news is now reporting that Obama is “distancing” himself from the report.
He has got to be kidding if he thinks anyone would believe this political hit report from DHS was produced without his express knowledge and by his request!
Here is the quote, note the lie that the President is not focused on politics, that is just as good as his earmark reform BS:as follows:
The White House has distanced itself from the analysis. When asked for comment on its contents, White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said, “The President is focused not on politics but rather taking the steps necessary to protect all Americans from the threat of violence and terrorism regardless of its origins.
Get that, “regardless of it’s origins” “not focused on politics”.

You are being deliberately obtuse in your reading of this. It states an either or proposition. It does not in any way claim that all conditions must be met, or more than one. It is quite plain in claiming that any of the conditions qualify.
They include hate groups, and they include single issue differences. They never claim they must meet more than one of the criteria. Take a lesson in English, paragraph and sentence structure, if you read it otherwise.
“It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration.”
I will also predict that although this report was released on 4/9 it was openly pushed today in order to give the criminal Obama media a framework in which to report on the tea parties tomorrow, if they report at all.
Now they can group the tea-parties as part of the radical right wing, dangerous opposition.
With your issue on reporting past violence I would suggest it would be far more frightening, and not enough time on the planet to make a list of violent crime by democrats. This is an incendiary tactic intended to paint all those disagreeing with Obama as part and parcel of criminal groups.
Watch the reports tomorrow, if any. You will likely see no-tax tea parties portrayed as extremists in the Obamedia.

That is a flat out lie and the one I fully expect the Obamedia to repeat over and over again.
YOu have no proof or evidence of any violent, or over the top activity related to the tax parties.
And your false claim that they think all taxes are or should be illegal.
You do spew the lying dem talking points almost as if you were part of writing them though.
Your hyperbole is a fabulous match for the open war Obama has declared on conservatives and republicans with his unprecedented government politicization of homeland security, by producing this report that we have been discussing.
It is however a flat out lie.
(The tea parties to date do not hold a candle to violent “code pink” “G 20″ “any sort of violent environmental attack group” liberal extreme groups that could easily qualify as terrorists. )
Obama intends to spy on and go after anyone who disagrees with his as they are a threat to homeland security:

The most disturbing part of the definition of rightwing extremist to me was “rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority”. As in believing that the US Constitution spelled out some very limited powers for the national government and said that all other issues should be left to the states? I believe that! Oh no, I’m a radical rightwing extremist and I didn’t even know – should I join a militia or something?

According to statistics gathered by the National Abortion Federation (NAF), an organization of abortion providers, since 1977 in the United States and Canada, there have been 17 attempted murders, 383 death threats, 153 incidents of assault or battery, and 3 kidnappings committed against abortion providers

The report does not separate those who are pro-life from the very very few violent protestors.
Again, lets compare democrats and crime with republicans and crime. NO MATCH.
Isolating those crimes is an inflammatory, hate-oriented attempt to discredit anyone disagreeing with Obama and paint them as criminals.

“YOu have no proof or evidence of any violent, or over the top activity related to the tax parties.”
I never called the tea parties violent.
Though extremists do show up.
“And your false claim that they think all taxes are or should be illegal.”
People who believe that income taxes are illegal will be there as will people who think Obama was born in Kenya.
Would you classify those as extreme or mainstream views within conservatives?
“(The tea parties to date do not hold a candle to violent “code pink” “G 20″ “any sort of violent environmental attack group” liberal extreme groups that could easily qualify as terrorists.”
I agree that the tea parties can’t hold a candle to left wing groups doing protests.
That’s because the outrage is largely manufactured astroturf brought to us by FoxNews and Glenn Beck so it does not translate to people in the streets.

Great job Brownie, that memo hit the spot …

“The report does not separate those who are pro-life from the very very few violent protestors.”
So you agree that there are single issue domestic terrorists?

“Again, lets compare democrats and crime with republicans and crime. NO MATCH.”
You’re correct.
Republicans totally destroy Democrats when it comes to party members in trouble with the law.
There are 20 Republicans (Congressmen and various aides) implicated in the Abramoff scandal alone.

“Like those extreme psychopaths who composed the Declaration of Independence”
So people who bomb abortion clinics and shoot abortion doctors are just like Tom Jefferson.
The right wing is truly sickening.

You are trying to change the subject. The tea parties are about being taxed beyond what is reasonable.
Your other points are akin to Obama trying to paint all dissent as by extremists. If you don’t agree with our dictator Obama you must be a Nut.
I am not participating in that scam Ryan. You make up little scenarios to suit you hate mongering and in your attempt to discredit the true grass roots nature of the tea parties.
You took the vile Obama Homeland security report seriously in that all dissent from HIM is by extremists.
You may want to stop with the Kool aid.
These are reasonable grassroots efforts. Put forth in a reasonable, non violent, manner, with a true american message.
Unlike Acorn for example who violently take back foreclosed homes, or intimidate bankers into lending money to people who cannot pay it back, which was the foundation of the mortgage and financial crisis.
Tea Parties are not conducted by bullies, extremists or characterized by violence.
Obama intends to treat all dissenters as extremists and terrorists and has laid the foundation to spy on them using law enforcement and homeland security resources:
The report says the federal government “will be working with its state and local partners over the next several months” to gather information on “rightwing extremist activity in the United States.”
Especially note the following excerpt:
“It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single-issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration,” the warning says.
This is an open warning that this Obama administration will be spying on those that have any disagreement with any of their policies, under the guise of “they could be extremists!”

“You are trying to change the subject. The tea parties are about being taxed beyond what is reasonable.”
You changed the subject to the tea parties, not me.
“Your other points are akin to Obama trying to paint all dissent as by extremists. If you don’t agree with our dictator Obama you must be a Nut.”
No, I was just saying nuts will be at the tea parties.
Its funny you mention this broad brush painting since Michele Malkin and the rest of the right wing media loved to show a photo of some nuts at one of the early anti-Iraq War protests that said nasty things about our soldiers and made that representative of a protest that had millions of people voicing their concerns.
Now you are mad the shoe is on the other foot and the right wing freak flag is gonna be waving for all to see.

I love these tears for the poor bankers and scorn for people doing sit ins in their own foreclosed homes.
Really shows what the right wing is all about.

“An American revolutionary war and a Civil War have been based on over-the-top federal tyranny”
The American revolutionary War was not about federal authority.
And the Civil War was about the South wanting to keep their slave economy going.
Not a shock though that the tea parties are gonna have a neoconfederate elements at them.

“Got that? “Liberty”. “CONSENT of the governed”. Throwing off despotism is not only a “RIGHT”, but a “DUTY”.”
Here’s consent of the governed
Obama has a job approval rating in the low 60′s after being elected with 53% of the electorate.
In our system of government we operate by election.
If some group of right wing nuts decides they do not like the government and seek to overthrow it by non peaceful means, they should rightfully be considered traitors.

so refreshing to see our first lady in something other than black stretch pants. Doesn’t she realize the camera is always on her and her family? Our former first ladys dressed much more appropriatly.Every time you see Michelle coming and going she has those damn stretch pants on.Someone needs to take her aside and tell how to dress.
