First Lady Sparks Frenzy At London All-Girls School
ABC News’ Yunji de Nies and Karen Travers report:
Who caused all the shrieking at the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Language School in London today?
A surprise visit from English soccer star David Beckham? Pop boy band, the Jonas Brothers?
No, that was First Lady Michelle Obama sparking a frenzy at the all-girls school, where she spoke about the importance of education, explained why being smart is cool and even shared a little girl talk about her courtship with her husband, President Obama.
The school’s focus is teaching English as a primary language to underprivileged students in an impoverished area of London. It is named for the first female doctor in the United Kingdom and its buildings are named after famous women, including a Frida Kahlo arts building and an Emily Bronte building for English studies.
"This school is incredible and you should be very proud,” the first lady said.
As she has done with school students in Washington D.C., the first lady talked about her own experience growing up in a working-class Chicago neighborhood and the influence her family had on her upbringing.
"I am an example of what’s possible when girls are loved and nurtured by the women around them,” she said.
Mrs. Obama emphasized the power of an education and said she was standing there today because of her education.
“By getting a good education you too can create your own destiny. I never cut class. I like being smart. I thought being smart was the coolest thing in the world,” she said. “You are the women that will build the world as it should be and that’s why a good education is so important.”
The first lady appeared to get choked up when she told the students, “All of you are jewels you are precious and you touch my heart.”
Mrs. Obama even shared a little girl talk with the students, ranging in age from 11-17-years old, and told them about her first date with her husband. She said she thought Obama was cute and was inspired by him speaking to people at a community meeting in Chicago.
The first lady gloated a bit about her European trip agenda, compared to her husband’s. “My husband is going to be very jealous of how I spent my afternoon. He’s off meeting important people but this is more fun,” she said.
The first lady by a student choir performing a number called, “Believe,” drama and modern dance performances and an explanation of the school’s leadership program.
The overall theme of the performances focused on achieving goals, overcoming setbacks and never giving up.
After her remarks, Mrs. Obama greeted the choir girls and gave them each a hug and was mobbed by students seated in the audience as she made her way to greet them. Throughout her visit, the girls cheered and clapped loudly for her and many wiped away tears.
Earlier the students buzzed with anticipation for the special surprise guest they were expecting. Not surprising, the rumor mill was in overdrive and many of the students thought it could be Mrs. Obama coming. The students let out a cheer and squeals when she finally arrived.

I actually cannot believe Michelle went to EGA!
I ‘graduated’ from the school last year and go to a college practically around the corner from it now and I missed her :(
I hope the girls got some valuable knowledge and inspiration from her words and wisdom and presence. I saw some of the girls running and screaming on the way home from school so she certainly made a big impact.
GO MICHELLE!

The Obamas are hugely popular in the UK, probably more than the USA, because the British appreciate class and intelligence more. The Obamas serve as inspiration to many people in England. Desptie the UK having a superior education system compared to the USA, there is a real problem with social mobility in the UK. Despite a higher percentage of ethnic people going to University than the US, there is far less ethnic representation in positions of power. Many highly educated ethnic British head to the USA for greater opportunity and the Obamas symbolise more than anything in America.

To bad she didn’t tell them what
she really feels and thinks, i.e.,
for the first time in my life I am
proud of my country…..then take
questions and explain to them just
what she meant by that statement.
She couldn’t tell the truth about
that either.

Stop with the fashion talk, the faux pas talk, and all that, and Report this!
This is what we love about Michelle Obama. Her ability to make people throughout the world feel like they belong.
Globalization has been a source of economic opportunity, but it often has brought about societal frustrations and feelings of disconnectedness. Michelle Obama’s ability to make minority populations feel like they belong in Western society, her ability to make people of lower income feel like they matter and they have something they can contribute, her emphasis on education for all, respect for women and good motherhood, all of that is what makes her effective.
Please Michelle, keep reaching out in this way with more schools and more kids. It’s really making a difference.
LOVE YOU!
oh, and there are great pics of this and her hugging the girls — but i want to see some video!

MONET, what she meant was, she was proud of seeing all Americans regardless of race, age etc, be really involved in the political process and actually support an African American.
We may love our country but no one can be always proud of what the governments does, any government,in any country, including America.

for the person who’s still complaining about that proud of country line.
i’m guessing you didn’t grow up in the South Side of Chicago as a black girl in the 70s and 80s, have your freshman college roommate not want to room with you b/c you were black, be discriminated against, etc.
She obviously loves her country, but the discrimination she and a lot of other people used to have go through is not something any one with a sense of conscience should be proud of.
The enduring and amazing promise of America is that it is constantly bettering itself and living up to its founding doctrines for all of its people.

This is not a good message to give school girls. Michelle Obama should encourage the girls to aspire to political leadership. Instead she implies the President is not having fun, that it is more fun to be the wife of a political leader. She even discussed their courtship! Very sad indeed.

Maybe Bush’s 27% approval rating was the real downer. You’re right, we all don’t have to agree on everything but the trashing of the Constitution, (spying on American citizens) the attack of a country that hadn’t attacked us,(Iraq) and the economic mess that we’re now in is what had many Americans angry over the last 8 years is why many of us are now more encouraged. Also, the fact that our President and First Lady have garnered such positive attention here and around the world has us all feeling better about ourselves and our country. Those of you who didn’t vote for Obama had every right, just don’t expect the rest of us to share your feelings of dejection.

While our First Lady speaks about the importance of education, here’s the flip-side for those of you who are “not impressed” with Michelle Obama’s visit to a girls school: Back home South Carolina’s Republican Governor Mark Sanford claims public education is “a Soviet-style monopoly”.
“Supply Side” Sanford’s political grandstanding appears to be more important than improving his state’s education system. While the South Carolina public school system is only graduating about 55% of its high school students and ranks among the worst in the nation on education, Sanford is rejecting federal stimulus money for education and jobs.

Ryan C –”I love how right wingers scream that Obama is destroying the Constitution and in the very next breathe claim spying on American citizens is just fine.”— I don’t claim that spying on American citizens is just fine… What I DO claim is that it didn’t happen.. There is a huge difference between what was going on and “Spying on American citizens” as the liberal media liked calling it…
The government used existing PHONE RECORDS (not ease dropped conversations) to determine if a particular number was calling or being called by a number on the terrorist watch list. If and ONLY if the hot numbers showed up on the records, were taps requested through the FISA courts. If you were not calling aor being called by known terrorists, then NO ONE was listening to your conversations.
But, I will say that Obama’s firing of private industry CEOs and replacing them with appointees (Like at AIG and GM) is constitutionally questionable. And the 90% tax on bonuses paid to AIG employees that was recently passed is in DIRECT violation of article 1 of the constitution..

“I don’t claim that spying on American citizens is just fine…”
Your quote
” Spying on American citizens: if you have nothing to hide..why worry about it.”
” What I DO claim is that it didn’t happen.”
Bush signed a presidential order in 2002 allowing the National Security Agency to monitor without a warrant the international (and sometimes domestic) telephone calls and e-mail messages of hundreds or thousands of citizens and legal residents inside the United States.
In a speech Tuesday morning, Gonzales said the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which bars wiretaps on Americans at home without a court warrant, did not prevent the NSA program.
“It is simply not the case that Congress in 1978 anticipated all the ways that the president might need to act in times of armed conflict to protect the United States,” he said during his speech at Georgetown. “FISA, by its own terms, was not intended to be the last word on these critical issues.”

“If you were not calling aor being called by known terrorists, then NO ONE was listening to your conversations.”
The Senate Select Intelligence Committee is looking into allegations from two U.S. military linguists that the government routinely listened in on phone calls of American military and humanitarian aid workers serving overseas.
“But, I will say that Obama’s firing of private industry CEOs and replacing them with appointees (Like at AIG and GM) is constitutionally questionable.”
Interesting considering that AIG CEO was fired last Sept. His replacement was elected by the board of AIG.
And GM, the CEO was asked for his resignation which he tendered. The COO is slotted to take over as CEO.
“And the 90% tax on bonuses paid to AIG employees that was recently passed is in DIRECT violation of article 1 of the constitution.”
You should really read up on ex post facto law and how it effects that bill instead of regurgitating Glen Beck
In the 1994 opinion United States v. Carlton, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously held that retroactive tax laws did not violate the constitutional prohibition on ex post facto legislation, provided their retroactive application was “supported by a legitimate legislative purpose furthered by rational means”

Say what you want anytime a educated, successfully, and lovely woman can go and inspire young girls to be all they can be it is a positive move. If she just helps one girl realize her potential then her job is done well, for all of you that are complaining about her you need to be ashamed. Nothing she said was out of line, it hit or could hit home with some of the girls and give them just the push they need to continue with their life goals. Come on people find something else this is a positive thing and that is the best you can come up with.

I am a bit older than Michelle but I can explain perfectly what she meant by her statement about being proud of her country now. She meant that we all know that for 400 years in America, African Americans were considered inferior and forced into slavery! That is nothing to be proud of, believe me! In the 1960′s during the Civil Rights Movement, African American children were beaten, hosed and had dogs sent in to attack them and tear them limb from limb if need be! That is nothing to be proud of, and I was there, scared to death that grown up White people were going to kill me! That is nothing to be proud of! The assassinations of JFK, MLK, and RFK, Medgar Evers, The Chaney group, the little girls in the Birmingham church, were nothing to be proud of!The continued institutional racism via laws that are still on the books from the Jim Crow Era of segregation that I grew up in, was nothing to be proud about! The Tuskeegee Syphillis Experiments on African American men who were not infected and were infected for the study, is not something to be proud of!
Hopefully, you understand that all the ugly, hurtful things, that have been done to African Americans is nothing to be proud of, and because there have been few and mostly forced changes in this country regarding race relations, often times, things go on that we cannot and should not be proud of! Get It! By the way, we are not proud of the way that financial matters have been attended to here either! Not proud of that at all!

I think Michelle Obama is a very nice person and she has specific things she focuses on as the President’s wife. What I don’t understand is why she is hovering under the halo of the Kennedy’s. Does she not want to make the impacts on the country as herself? Somewhere she has to come out from under that cloud that the media is creating for her and say “This is MY STYLE”, “This is the way I, Michelle Obama, want people to view me”. It’s like the media is creating another Kennedy family. Why? Politicians and Love don’t mix like they used to.

She has met almost everyone person of consequence in that time and her judgement is said to be impeccable and she can spot a fake at 100 paces. Paula, what you need to understand is that these people complaining don’t have a problem with Michelle Obama. The woman has done nothing to bring on the despicable bile of some. It is a projection of their own insecurities and their party becoming a cosmic joke. Instead of looking internally, they do what they do best: Blame someone else. The queen initiated the embrace and I felt the same way you did regarding her majesty: You don’t do what she has done for 50 years without having the ability to separate the phonies from those that are genuine.

What superficial B.S. this has become. She’s getting this attention because she’s good looking, young(for a first lady), in good physical shape, wears sleeveless dresses, and happens to be black. Who is more accomplished, Michelle or Hillary? Take a wild guess. Do they go bonkers over Hillary?. . . . of course not. All Michelle has to do is show up and she’s a hit because of her physical appearance. Intelligence aside, this is a political version of Paris Hilton syndrome.

It has been a long devastating 8 years and we can finally be proud of our President and First Lady. Like many of us knew throughout the campaign and have come to know into the early days of this presidency, Republican ideology is as worthless as a sack of condoms in the Vatican. As many UK reporters have noted, the Obama’s took London by storm. The right-wingers have no recourse but to spew their rage and underlying jealousy – oh, for the repugs to be able to claim a leader like President Obama.
Republicans are making themselves irrelevant as noted by many of their comments on this site. The Republican Party is destroying itself, becoming a regional party, and a party without leadership. Note that most of their posts only put down our President and beautiful First Lady. They have no leaders to quote or to feel proud about. No leaders that make them feel so good inside, to instill in them the pride of country, to make them proud on the world stage. They are left with McCain, Palin, Rush, Sean, Billo, and Beck. Now who would not be angry about that?

It is embarrassing what she did when touch the Queen other day and gave her an i Pod. She don’t care about our country, USA. I am glad we have a nice first lady, Laura Bush for the last eight years.

It seems that the better the First Lady Michelle Obama is doing the louder and nastier the comments from the right wingers and disaffected Republican shills. I think she and her husband are doing a good job restoring the image and reputation of the United States after the disaster of the last eight years.

anonymous – As it turns out, the Queen hugged the Michelle Obama first. And, the First Lady responded, I think quite naturally. You’re making something out of nothing. It appears that they hit it off and had a general expression of affection. The Queen reportely asking Michelle to write and keep in touch. If you have a problem with people showing affection, you should seek counseling.

“It is embarrassing” – no, it’s not.
Check out the British newspapers’ web sites. The Brits are not insulted, in fact they are charmed by our First Lady. The Obama’s gift of a rare signed Richard Rodgers songbook with an iPod with show tunes was extremely thoughtful. Oh, and also google Richard Rodgers – he is an American treasure and many Republicans like his songs too.
