Gifter-in-Chief? Michelle Obama gives Carla Bruni a Guitar
From Sunlen Miller and Yunji de Nies
Much has been said about the Obama’s gift giving recently. The Queens Ipod, the DVDs given to Gordon Brown after his visit to the White House.
But Michelle Obama may have struck the right cord with her gift to her newest friend, Carla Bruni -Sarkozy.
After meeting the wife of French President Sarkozy, Mrs. Obama gave Carla Bruni an acoustic Gibson guitar.
Bruni – a former model – is also a singer/songwriter. On each of her three CD’s, the last of which was released just this past June, she plays the guitar on many of the tracks.
The First lady presented Bruni with the gift on Saturday when the ladies visited the Cathedral de Norte Dame de Strasbourg with the rest of the NATO Summit spouses.
The two first met on Friday when Mr. and Mrs. Obama visited French Palace Rohan. The first lady’s office said that the two women really hit it off and enjoyed a private lunch together that lasted for over an hour together.

The proofreading (done?) here is a little off….
Queens -> Queen’s
Then the last sentence:
The first lady’s office said that the two women really hit it off and enjoyed a private lunch together that lasted for over an hour together.
You need to have one of those togethers dropped.

I wish we had grownups in the White House who weren’t shrieking, with their gifts, “look at me, look at me! I’m so cool!”

Without the phrase “Gifter-in-Chief” in the title, I probably would have read the article anyway. You don’t need to grab the viewers attention by resorting to something so corny.

Gift giving is not about the giver…(the OBAMAS) Seems to me they are trying to bring attention to themselves (not suprising) which is selfish.
They need a lesson in humility, and some etiquette in the gift giving department, as their skills are horrific.
Ms. Gift Giver looks like a throwback of the 50′s and 60′s sporting those psychedelic house coats.

I have a acoustic Gibson guitar. Lets hear it for all musicians!

Wow! Since when has this world become such an ugly place that people are raked over the coals for the giving of gifts? People of refinement look for the best in others and accept gifts with the understanding of the good intentions of the gesture. Perhaps Mrs. Obama did a little research about the sort of guitars already owned by Mrs. Sarkozy, and quite possibly, she “struck just the right chord”. As to the Queen’s gift, don’t you suppose there are enough works of art and dust catchers in Buckingham Palace? People who have so much sometimes really appreciate the simplest and most personal gesture. With regard to Mrs. Obama’s fashion sense, I’d say she has some hits, a few misses; but in general she is a joy to watch. She is beautiful inside and out, which might be a goal worth attaining for some of you out there in cyberspace. But then I guess it might not be as much fun as sitting there with your claws bared, ready to pounce.

Some people need to grow up. If you weren’t aware, Carla Bruni is a musician so giving her a guitar IS appropriate and its on behalf of Mrs. Obama not of you… She can give her whatever she damn pleases…OBVIOUSLY, this gift is not about the giver… Michelle Obama does not play the guitar…

So far they have been a complete embarassment while overseas being ill prepared for proper etiquette, gifts and Michelles attire while visiting the Queen of England. Lets just hope American taxpayers are not footing the bill for the gifts along with the bad decisions his administration has made so far.

Morning Jake
Can you please ask Gibbs a question about this on Afghanistan?:
How does Obama explain the fact that he is dealing with a country that treats their women and daughter the way the law passed by parliament and signed by Karzai wants to? Now, my tax dollars will help deny Afghan women the right to leave their homes except for ‘legitimate’ purposes; forbid them from working or receiving education without their husbands’ express permission; weaken mothers’ rights in the event of a divorce; and make it impossible for wives to inherit houses and land from their husbands, even if husbands can inherit property from their wives.
Also …. where are Hillary and Pelosi on this issue? They are supposed to be all for woman’s rights …. such examples for democrat women out there. Where the heck are their voice in this issue? Crickets in the background.

Why is this news? Seriously.
Does this rise to the level of the continuing giveaway of money to AIG and company and/or Obama’s attempt to install rules that will circumvent the few restraints that Congress imposed on said giveaways?
Is this story more important than the fact that Geithner and Summers appear to be little more than foxes guarding the hen house?
Does this surpass the fact that we’re not only escalating in Afghanistan but we are dropping our moral objections to the way they treat women? Then again, maybe the people at the top of our government don’t think Sharia laws are discrimination and abuse.
Why does this merit more than one sentence and 5 seconds of attention?

Whoa, listen to all the frustrated right-wingers, suddenly concerned that US leaders might be an embarassment on the world stage – too bad they’re 8 years late.
The fact is, the Obamas have so much more class and intelligence than W, and the Europeans obviously (from their public responses) recognize this. What a bitter pill for Republicans to swallow: Not only is this a Democratic president getting adulation from the rest of the world, he’s… well, you know…black!
Hello, gift giving between heads of state has been going on for centuries; it’s not something the Obama’s invented. Sure they try to pick out something nice, something cool. Isn’t that what people do when they get someone a gift?
Time for some pouting children to get over it and grow up.

so, when invited to a dinner party or social engagement at someones home, it is tacky and egocentric to present the host/hostess with a gift? It becomes even more so if the gift giver actually takes the time to find out the interests of the host? I do believe those who find this gesture classless and selfish are the ignorant simpletons in the equation. Gift-giving by heads-of-state to hosting leaders and their spouses has always been customary, and when it is done thoughtfully, and without great fanfare, the gesture is even more meaningful.Get over yourselves, really. Pathetic.

The right “cord”? Good grief, these networks are so tight they will not pay anyone who knows grammar or how to spell correctly. It is “chord”, not “cord”. As long as this story has been up there should be egg on the faces of everybody who has read this and left it up! No wonder we are going to hell. Everybody is looking for answers spelled a million different ways.

But LeoDaK Can you see that the 8 years of Bush, the msm mostly focused on anything bad, whereas now they are focusing on only the good with Obama and leaving out the bad?

I think we should keep music out of politics and politics out of music. But realistically, you can’t. Look at Lenon, Springsteen. Even Elvis joins the army. Some musicians resents that McCain used their music at his election rallies. Clinton uses the Saxosphone when he was a candidate. Obama dances on Ellen to the beat of music.

Much has been said about the Obama’s gift giving recently.

Much has also been said about President Obama bowing to the Saudi King, too.
Oh wait. No it hasn’t.
Come to think of it, I don’t think all that much has been said by Yunji about the DVD gift set to the Browns, either.

Hehe, the Haters just keep on giving……….imagine for a second the Leaders that represent these haters. Birds of a feather flock together. Mr. President and First Lady, you have made us proud with your intelligence, grace, knowledge, class and smiles on the world stage. Please continue to realign us with the World. You had your work cut out for you, after the destructiveness of the previous administration. Your gifts was appropriate and geniune to each that received them. Michelle you rocks with your class. Thank you for connecting with your choice of clothes that doesn’t cost 5 thousand for a suit, or a half a mil for jewlery. You are every Real woman.

I applaud the gift of a guitar – great choice for Ms. Bruni-Sarkozy…but a Gibson? How about a Martin, or a Taylor, or a Foggy Bottom or how about one of those snazzy Santa Cruz guitars? All American made. A Gibson is so pedestrian.

============
I don’t think Yunji should report only the wonderful things about the Obamas. Most of the posters here don’t do that, but I’ve never seen Yunji write anything that couldn’t have come out of Mrs. Obama’s PR department.
Bowing to the Saudi King is much bigger than who Mrs. Obama had lunch with.
The bad gifts are as newsworthy as the good ones.
I think Michelle Obama is fine, but just because Europe goes crazy for her doesn’t mean the US Press needs to write about her and her “new friend” and “glam-offs”. I think you would feel the same if Condi Rice or Sarah Palin got this kind of press coverage.

It has been reported in the news that Queen Elizabeth’s staff suggested the iPOD.
I was in the Cathedral de Norte Dame de Strasbourg in 2004. I was working in Switzerland. I had encounter several instances of anti-Americanism. I cried when seeing the big plaque on a wall in Cathedral de Norte Dame de Strasbourg honoring American soldiers that saved them.
Wish I had an “Impeach Bush” button because everyone knew immediately when I spoke that I was an American.
It is wonderful to see the response Obama is receiving in Europe. Even two protesters that were interviewed did not have anything negative to say about Obama.
Jake’s reports about Obama’s negotiating skills demonstrates Obama’s ability to help repair our imagine in the world. An image that was partially very deserved.

It great to have a normal President and First Lady who love and understand musicians and artists.

Having played guitar for 40-some years, I can assure some of the commenters that another guitar is always most welcome. They are like good friends, you can never have too many. I think the problem is not the Obamas giving gifts, but the media and the rest of us who actually pay attention to this minor and insignificant aspect of their trip.

Keith, I think you have it backwards….most of our performing artists hate Republicans, not the other way around. But how would you feel if your policies were continually mocked, derided, and criticized by the celebrity left.

What’s with all the cheesy uber-materialistic gifts? Gifts from one foreign dignitary to another is meant to be symbolic — these gifts often end up in museums! The gift is supposed to symbolize the friendship/alliance between the two nations. I shudder to think what future Britons will think when they see the queen’s Ipod from America or Brown’s DVD collection in a museum 20 years down the road.
Posted by: Taxpayer | April 6, 2009, 2:35 pm 2:35 pm
The gift is meant to be from one nation to the other, not from one person to another. This shouldn’t be seen as Mrs Obama’s gift to Mrs. Sarkozy, it should be seen as America’s gift to France, like the Statue of Liberty was a gift that France gave to America. In most countries, like here in the US, most politicians are not allowed to keep the gift – they belong to the country. Condi Rice had to turn over the jewelry that was given to her when she left office.

To Yeil,
It is so romantic to have the President of our country say that he is accompanying his wife to Prague. He really loves his beautiful wife and I am so proud of them. To have such an intelligent, attractive and educated couple. Michelle is Harvard educated and Barack as well. Wow!

Why do you people care what Obama and his wife give to other world leaders? At least it’s something that any of us can afford to buy ourselves rather than a million dollar piece of useless junk that they’ll put on a shelf. On the other hand, the iPod is American made, the Gibson Guitar American. You people like to complain about the lamest things and make a fuss of everything. Why don’t you all go blow your money on idiotic things like the Obama’s new dog Bo’s mouse pads and t-shirts, or the commemorative Presidential coin collection? Ridiculous how people come up with the dumbest things to spend money and then cry out that their President didn’t give the other world leader something more expensive with their own tax dollars.
