Jeb and Mitt Team Up to Rebrand GOP

ABC News’ Teddy Davis reports: Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) are teaming up on a Republican rebranding effort intended to push back on Democratic efforts to paint the GOP as "the party of no." Bush and Romney will hold their first event this Saturday in Arlington, Va. The first roundtable discussion will feature opening remarks from the Republican leaders followed by comments from members of the public attending the event. The new group is called the National Council for a New America and is being organized by the office of House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, R-Va.

Cantor and other members of Congress will appear at Saturday’s event along with Bush and Romney. The organization’s goal, according to Cantor spokesman Joe Pounder, is to persuade the public that the GOP is the party of "new solutions" to people’s everyday challenges. The group’s organizers envision holding several roundtables across the country focused on the economy, health care, education, energy, and national security. Look for Democrats to use Bush’s involvement in the group to try to once again tie Republicans to the economic record of former President George W. Bush: that’s what the Democratic National Committee did recently when Bush began advising GOP candidates for governor through the Republican Governors Association. On Thursday, the National Council for a New America is releasing a letter to the American people announcing the formation of the group and outlining its priorities. In addition to Romney and Bush, the effort features Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R), Arizona Sen. John McCain (R), and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R). Here is the text of the letter: Dear Friends, The United States is the greatest country in the world, a beacon of hope, strength, and prosperity that Democracies worldwide seek to emulate. Our nation and its people have persevered through past challenges with strength derived from our common belief in freedom, liberty, and personal responsibility. Like every American, we look to the future with optimism for the great possibilities of tomorrow. Although today we face some of the toughest times in recent history, together, like so many generations before, we march forward with a vision for an even brighter future for our children. Today, we are launching the National Council for a New America (NCNA), a caucus of Congressional leaders gathering the expertise of national leaders and doers. We hope that will form the foundation of a concerted, policy-based forum to listen to, partner with, and empower the American people with ideas and solutions that speak directly to the needs of our great nation. This forum will engage in a conversation with America that seeks to remove ideological filters, addresses the realities we are confronting, and speaks to the challenges our citizens are facing. The NCNA will bring together citizens from across the country to begin a dialogue with the American people through a series of forums, town halls, and an online effort that will engage people in a discussion to meet our common challenges and build a stronger country through common-sense ideas. The NCNA will be a dynamic, forward-looking organization that will amplify the common-sense and wisdom of our fellow citizens through a grassroots dialogue with Republican leaders. However, this is not a Republican-only forum. While we will be guided by our principles of freedom and security, we will seek to include more than just our ideas. This forum will include a wide open policy debate that every American can feel free to participate in. We do this not just to offer an alternative point of view or to be disagreeable. Instead, we want to ask the American people what their hopes and dreams are. Since January, the President and the Democratic Majority in Congress have – rightfully so – put forward their plan for the future, now we must listen, learn and lead through an honest, open conversation with the American people that will result in building policy proposals that will yield the best results for our nation’s long-term success. Ultimately, however, we are only launching this effort. The real drivers will have to be the American people. We invite Americans from all walks of life to speak with us as we begin anew rebuilding and reenergizing our nation. We do not pretend to have all the answers nor do we expect the NCNA to remain a static forum. Instead, this is going to be a living, breathing, expanding group that engages Americans from all walks of life. We hope to engage other national leaders, grassroots activists and citizens and invite them to work with us to solve problems with common-sense conservative solutions. A Blueprint for our Conversation with America Economy: Real Solutions for Economic Recovery As the country battles through the worst economic crisis in a generation, we must remain focused on the foundations and institutions that have made us the most prosperous people in the world and the ideas that create jobs and grow our economy. At the same time, we must learn from the mistakes that led to the current crisis and to prevent similar situations from ever occurring again. Healthcare: Building a 21st Century, Patient-Centered System No one doubts that our nation’s health care system is in need of reform, but we must strike the right balance that builds on what works and fixes what is broken. All Americans deserve access to high-quality, affordable care. But such coverage cannot come at the expense of their ability to choose their own doctor and have access to the right care, at the right time, in the right setting without waiting in line while sick. In addition, we must continue to focus on the innovation and science that have resulted in thousands of treatments and cures for life-threatening or debilitating diseases while allowing America to remain the leader in research and development worldwide. Education: Preparing Our Children to Succeed A high-quality education should not be dependent upon a parent’s income or address. All of America’s children deserve an education that will prepare them for the opportunities and the challenges that await them in the global economy. Yet today, thousands of American children, especially in our inner cities, receive a substandard education or find post-secondary education unaffordable. We must return power from Washington to parents and well-paid teachers who know what’s best for our children. Energy: Solutions for Energy Independence American families and businesses cannot afford an energy policy where we are held hostage by foreign oil cartels and dictators. As a nation, we can no longer send billions of dollars overseas each year, often to countries that help fund our enemies. We must implement a comprehensive energy policy that includes traditional fuels, alternative energy, and conservation resulting in affordable, reliable domestic energy. Such a policy will stabilize costs for families and businesses while at the same time creating much-needed jobs here at home. National Security: Defending American Liberty and Freedom The threats posed to our nation are more varied and evolving more than perhaps at any other time in our history. Modern communications, technology and the proliferation of weapons of all types have empowered our enemies and those who support them. Our national security policy must reflect these realities while allowing us to maintain technological superiority, support the most well-trained and well-equipped military in the world and have the intelligence capabilities to uncover and prevent attacks before they occur. Our National Panel of Experts: Governor Haley Barbour
Governor Jeb Bush
Governor Bobby Jindal
Senator John McCain
Governor Mitt Romney These are not the only issue areas where we will engage America, but they form a starting point in our revitalization effort. In the coming months, the NCNA will focus our attention outside of Washington where American families are living and raising their children, working toward the promise of a better tomorrow, and where common-sense ideals are valued over pundits and the political winds. We know America’s best days are ahead, but we need to work hard to ensure that promise. We also know that the American people want choices and alternatives – that there is no one right solution for what America and its people need. This is what our country was founded on, this is what we stand for, this is what we hope the National Council for a New America will provide and we ask our fellow citizens to join with us. Sincerely, John Boehner, Eric Cantor, Mike Pence, Cathy McMorris Rodgers, John Carter, Pete Sessions, David Dreier, Kevin McCarthy, Roy Blunt Mitch McConnell, Jon Kyl, Lamar Alexander, John Cornyn, John Thune

You’ve got to be kidding. I don’t ever want to hear the name Bush again. And Jeb did to Florida what his mentally disabled bother did to the country. Long live Ron Paul.

The Bush name is going to turn off a lot of us Indies who didn’t vote for Obama or GWB. As soon as I saw his name, I thought, “oh, too bad.” Better come up with something better than this (him), Republicans.

“But such coverage cannot come at the expense of their ability to choose their own doctor and have access to the right care, at the right time, in the right setting without waiting in line while sick.”
I have pretty good health coverage now, and I also did at my last job a few years ago. I NEVER had these ‘abilities’ they seem to believe is common. No lines while sick? Freedom to choose my own doctor? Have any of these guys lived in the HMO world outside of the Congressional health plan? And I know I’m lucky – I have a sister who doesn’t even have any health insurance (widowed and she can’t work enough hours while juggling raising my twin nieces to qualify or afford it).
I wish them the best of luck and wait for them to actually bring some concrete ideas to the table rather than rehashing a list of the issues covered in the last election.

I don’t get why the GOP keeps drawing on it’s history/past thinking that will revitalize the present and get people excited about the GOP again. This isn’t a daytime soap opera (fantasy), this is politics (reality).

With the GOP it is always the “National” something or the other, as if the country was behind it. They have a complete lack of imagination, and the minute they move just a tad towards the center the right will have a hissy fit and they will crumble.
For all the Socialist, Communist, fascist, talk from the right, it is that 20% that wants to run the country and the world. They are truly the greatest threat America faces.

Interesting – ?For all the Socialist, Communist, fascist, talk from the right, it is that 20% that wants to run the country and the world. They are truly the greatest threat America faces.”
Ok – let’s see what the nationalization of the banks, auto and heath care industries does for the country (by the way that IS socialism). I can’t wait for the hyperinflation to kick in. I can’t wait to see if everyone who was so upset by the Bush deficits are equally bothered by Obama and the Congress more than tripling them! Or are they really the hypocrites that I believe them to be?

Bush & Romney…all they are going to attract is the GOP base and flies. It’s so like the Reps to put a new title on the same old B.S.

Oh boy more family power. No more Bush, no more Clinton, no more Kennedy. Give us some new blood. By the way Ron Paul was the guy with a functioning brain from the republican side.

Rebrand the Republican Party? “A rose by any other name….”
Maybe the rebrand should include a name change to the Southern White Bible and Gun Party.
Trotting out a bunch of “has been” Republicans is the best idea Republicans have? The problem with the Republican Party is that it is morally and intellectually bankrupt. Until Republicans come out of denial about the fact they have become a radical, extremist, lunatic finge group, they ar eunlikely to recover.

“Ron Paul was the guy with a functioning brain from the republican side”. Sorry he also was one of the biggest porkers in the stimulis bill so that makes hime like the rest DEMs or REP. His functioning brain was in bed with the rest of the porkers. Actually the one I would throw out of the pack is John McCain. The only reason I voted for him was I did not want Obama in. Others say they don’t know why the GOP draws on the past. nobody seems to have trouble with the DEMs and Obama drawing on the past people with their radical ideas.
“The Blueprint for our Conversation with America” is a good idea. I agree with all the ideas. I don’t care who does promote it with the excepion of John McCain as long as those ideas win in 2010 and 2012.

Please! No more Bush or McCain. We can do better. If we are serious about taking back congress in 2010 and the WHITE HOUSE in 2012 get back to our grass roots and stop with these moderate’s and left wing members of our party. We are yearning for a CONSERVATIVE TO TAKE US BACK TO THE WHITE HOUSE and lead this great country back to our constitutional government! Char

IT’S ABOUT TIME!!!!!!!! I want to join in by doing anything I can to help promote the message by the new NCNA. I find it so hard to believe that Obama people are so party blind that they can’t see what’s happening in front of their own eyes. It’s either that or the Obama followers are really true Betty the moochers. Let me know what I can do and thank God somebody is finally going to STAND UP and SPEAK OUT, besides Fox

All great truths in life are simple. All colors come from three primary colors, all music comes from eight basic notes.
I draw my idea of the form of government from a principle in nature, which no art can overturn, viz., that the more simple any thing is, the less liable it is to be disordered, and the easier repaired when disordered – Thomas Paine
The story of the United States is the story of an economic miracle and a political miracle that was made possible by the translation into practice of two sets of ideas— both, by a curious coincidence, formulated in documents published in the same year, 1776.
One set of ideas was embodied in The Wealth of Nations, the masterpiece that established the Scotsman Adam Smith as the father of modern economics. The second set of ideas was embodied in the Declaration of Independence, drafted by Thomas Jefferson to express the general sense of his fellow countrymen.
Economic freedom is an essential requisite for political freedom. By enabling people to cooperate with one another without coercion or central direction, it reduces the area over which political power is exercised. In addition, by dispersing power, the free market provides an offset to whatever concentration of political power may arise. The combination of economic and political power in the same hands is a sure recipe for tyranny. – Milton Friedman
It took centuries of abuse to get the government out of religion; hopefully one day it can be separated from the economy as well.

Great Idea….we need all “common sense” ideas out there. We need the PEOPLE to know the truth….not what Obama’s MEDIA wants them to know. And may I add….This administration are Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Christopher Dodd, Barney Frank, (gosh, haven’t they been there for years?) Hasn’t Rahm Emmauel been there with Clinton?? Same old thing now. We need Common Sense leadership…and this administration has none.

I would have been excited about this until I saw the name of John McCain. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? ARE THEY INVITING ARLEN SPECTOR TOO? Exactly what the h— is John McCain an expert at? I suspect he now wants to hobnob with conservatives because he has someone in Arizona who will likely beat him in his primary election.
The GOP cannot rebrand itself if it insists on supporting people like McCain with his abysmal record on illegal immigration and some of the other ridiculous postions he has taken (he is aligned with democrats on treatment of terrorists, too).
This is the straw that will break the camel’s back for me. I think I have to change my party affiliation. I cannot stomach the bilge from the Republican party any longer. I hold them equally as responsible as the left in destroying this “great country”. There is nothing NEW about this forum. It is the same old —-, on a deceptive different plate, and I have had quite enough.

Why does believing in the traditional principles that this country was founded on make the Reps a lunatic, extremist and radical fringe group? I always find it interesting that people are so hostile to those values now while seeming to forget that they wouldnt necessarily have the liberty and freedom to voice such contempt if not for the traditional framework used to bring this country into existence.
I dont believe that the majority of this country has moved so far away from our founding values of individuality, freedom and liberty that the Reps must now essentially change their ideology in order to win.
I think that a forum such as the one now proposed by Reps is a move in the right direction and will hopefully get people to pull their heads out of the sand and realize that a smaller government allows everyone to truly be an individual in charge of their own existence. That is not and rightly SHOULD NOT be a guarantee of complete equality. The greatest threat America faces comes from the statists currently in power who think government can solve all of our problems by “leveling the playing field” and making us equal in all respects. Perhaps the manner in which the Rep message is put forth should be tweaked to resonate more soundly with more people, but that doesnt mean its core values are no longer relevant and should be left behind.

I appericate your effort and support your goals. It is critical that we identify who is going to lead in our next presidental election. This person must be able to show strong leadership and be able to inspire the average American the “Forgotten Man” and be able to with stand the attacks by the liberal media, Dems etc. Look at what they did to Sarah Palin.

The Republican Party needs to re-vamp. We have to be the Conservative Party. I would really prefer that John McCain not be part of this. He may be a registered Republican but he is no Conservative. The people need to rise up and take this country back to where we began – a Christ based country. God is not the center of our beliefs any longer. I pray we bring Him back.

I agree with several others about John McCain! I can’t get excited about any of this until I see him out. Look at the way he has treated Sarah Palin since the election is over. He won’t agree to any drilling anywhere! It’s clean, efficient and abundant. Oil along with clean coal and nuclear energy will make us truly independant from middle east oil! He wants to give amnesty to illegals and I don’t believe our country would be any safer under him than it is right now under Obama. Look to Sarah Palin,Rick Santorum and New Gingrich for some conservative ideas. Not too hot for Jeb either. Mitt, you can do better than this!

I ALSO HAVE IDEA FOR AUTO MFG, WHY NOT GO BACK IN TIME AND GIVE PEOPLE TAX CREDIT FOR PURCHASING NEW VEHICLES?? WOULD HELP THE AUTO INDUSTRY!!! WHERE DO ALL THESE RIDICULOUS UNINSURED NUMBERS COME FROM EXACTLY? PERHAPS, “ILLEGAL” IMMIGRANTS. OH, THAT’S WHERE DEMS GET THEIR VOTES, SILLY ME, I FORGOT. Jeb Bush is the greatest! Florida was hit by three hurricanes and flood storm that completely wiped out nearly all farmers and nurseries in the State. He gave everyone start up money in the way of grants, he gave everyone food, ice, water, tarps, shelter–I was in all three hurricanes. Jeb is the greatest to be in charge with any kind of national disaster. We don’t care what his last name is, the man speaks fluent spanish, is very fair and honest. We miss Jeb Bush in Florida.

Republicans ran a moderate against Carter in 1976 and lost. Republicans ran a conservative against Carter in 1980 and won. Republicans ran a liberal moderate against Obama in 2008 and lost.
Republicans can choose to loose or win in 2012. They can run a moderate or a TRUE conservative.

Republicans ran a moderate against FDR in 1936 and lost. Republicans ran a moderate (a former Democrat) against FDR in 1940 and lost. Both loses in spite of the fact that inflation was at double diget levels in both elections.

Wake up ,nobody cares what you personally think.
Get with a large enough group of like-minded people and elect your brand of representatives(if you can)
That’s what the Republican Party tried to do and failed miserably at this past election cycle.
Too narrow minded and too egocentric for popular consumption = The Republican Party ,and unfortunately you as well.
Ask the Republican defectors how they feel ,and to a person they say “the party moved too far right for me to be comfortable with” or something similar.

The GOP doesn’t need a rebrand. We are alive and well. The only places I read or hear about GOP problems are on liberal websites or TV. When the people wake up to what Obama’s spending will cost them they will flee to the GOP. Cap and Trade will make everyone’s utilities “skyrocket” as per Obama himself.

I LOVE LOVE the idea of these guys getting together. Jeb will be able to establish himself individually, he had high approvals in Florida, even among liberals. Mitt is a financial genius. Jindal is the future of the GOP.
I am in the under 30 crowd that would love to see the GOP reach my generation, before the liberals get in their heads.
I also disagree that we do not need a re-branding. We failed in the last 2 elections. we are not using technology or the web at anywhere nears its power. We need to remind people why conservative principals work!

Americans are hungry to feel once again a sense of mission and greatness.
I don ‘t know about you, but I am impatient with those Republicans who after the last election rushed into print saying, “We must broaden the base of our party”—when what they meant was to fuzz up and blur even more the differences between ourselves and our opponents.
It was a feeling that there was not a sufficient difference now between the parties that kept a majority of the voters away from the polls. When have we ever advocated a closed-door policy? Who has ever been barred from participating?
Our people look for a cause to believe in. Is it a third party we need, or is it a new and revitalized second party, raising a banner of no pale pastels, but bold colors which make it unmistakably clear where we stand on all of the issues troubling the people?
Let us show that we stand for fiscal integrity and sound money and above all for an end to deficit spending, with ultimate retirement of the national debt.
Let us also include a permanent limit on the percentage of the people’s earnings government can take without their consent.
Let our banner proclaim a genuine tax reform that will begin by simplifying the income tax so that workers can compute their obligation without having to employ legal help.
And let it provide indexing—adjusting the brackets to the cost of living—so that an increase in salary merely to keep pace with inflation does not move the taxpayer into a surtax bracket. Failure to provide this means an increase in government’s share and would make the worker worse off than he was before he got the raise.
Let our banner proclaim our belief in a free market as the greatest provider for the people.
Let us also call for an end to the nit-picking, the harassment and over-regulation of business and industry which restricts expansion and our ability to compete in world markets.
Let us explore ways to ward off socialism, not by increasing government’s coercive power, but by increasing participation by the people in the ownership of our industrial machine.
Our banner must recognize the responsibility of government to protect the law-abiding, holding those who commit misdeeds personally accountable.
And we must make it plain to international adventurers that our love of peace stops short of “peace at any price.”
We will maintain whatever level of strength is necessary to preserve our free way of life.
A political party cannot be all things to all people. It must represent certain fundamental beliefs which must not be compromised to political expediency, or simply to swell its numbers.
I do not believe I have proposed anything that is contrary to what has been considered Republican principle. It is at the same time the very basis of conservatism. It is time to reassert that principle and raise it to full view. And if there are those who cannot subscribe to these principles, then let them go their way.
excerpt from Ronald Reagan’s “Let Them Go Their Way” speach.

Son, you can’t even see the trees.
Fox news leans right, just like ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN and MSNBC lean left. Fox news exists, and does extremely well in the ratings, trouncing CNN and MSNBC mercilessly, precisely because of the bias in the other outlets.

Problem: Just look at the letter to be released on Thursday. TOO LONG, TOO WORDY. These people need to learn that 30sec. soundbites that hit hard on what they want to say is key; slogans that are memorable ie-”YES WE CAN” tho’ it never identified what it was that ‘we can’ stood for was a 24k slogan. Why?? Because each person could define it as they wished. That’s the key. Keep it simple and let each person personalize it. Obama supporters had many different interpretations of what Obama meant in his speeches: “I won’t have to worry about paying my mortgage.”, “I won’t have to worry about putting gas in my car.”, etc. etc. You all remember this I’m sure
Keep it simple; Short; All encompassing While getting our conserva-tive/republican message out. Polls show that majority of Americans hold conservative beliefs. Let’s build on this belief.
