Journey to Tehran

So, it’s been a wild couple of days.

After the "This Week" show on Sunday — and after five years of requests — I received word from the Iranian interests section that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had agreed to an interview with me.

But there was a catch: I had to be there by Wednesday at the latest.

The earliest plane out was Monday night, which meant that I arrived in Tehran at about 2:30am this morning. Spent a couple of hours cooling my heels in the "commercially important persons" lounge of the airport.

And, after my fingerprints were scanned into the computer, I got to the guest house at 5:00am.

Out the door again at 8:00am for a meeting with President Ahmadinejad’s press adviser, Ali Akbar Javanfekr, a polite and smiling man with a prematurely snow-white beard.

Javanfekr wanted to know what I wanted to talk about.

We sat over tea and chatted for an hour about just about everything on the table between the U.S. and Iran. What surprised me most was the spokesman’s skepticism about who really caused the Sept. 11th attacks.

Suffice to say, conspiracy theories are alive and well at the highest levels of the Iranian government. Like the Holocaust, this is a subject they will leave for further study.

While the crew set up in the garden of the presidential compound, I strolled around the gardens with some sour cherry juice, on what was a really beautiful Spring day. Perfect weather here in Tehran.

Every few minutes, a few more advisers from the presidential office came out to check on things. Shortly after noon, the president himself came out for our talk.

We had met once before on one of his visits to New York at a roundtable of journalists, and he said he remembered me. Maybe because we’re about the same size.

Then we sat down for our talk on President Obama and the prospect of a "new beginning" between the U.S. and Iran.

We’ll play the interview Sunday on "This Week," which includes some spirited exchanges, as you might imagine, on the nuclear talks, the Holocaust, and who’s really to blame for the breakdown in U.S. – Iran relations.

The president –who’s facing his own re-election challenge on June 12 –seems of two minds. He’s both caught between his desire for a new relationship with the United States, and his determination not to back down on any issue of importance.

We, of course, also talked about  imprisoned American journalist Roxana Saberi. I asked the president, as a goodwill gesture, if he would accept President Obama’s word that she’s not a spy, and also asked to go see her myself.

Fine with him, he said, but it’s not his decision.

"Let’s see if our judiciary allows for that, sure. But if they do not allow for that, no. I am afraid not," Ahmadinejad told me.

He sent me to the judiciary department. We made the request by phone right away and even went to the offices to make the request in person but we couldn’t get beyond the gates.

Instead, I drove out to northern Tehran to Roxana’s apartment, where her father, Reza Saberi, a philosopher, poet and professor, and mother, Akiko Saberi, a pathologist from Japan, have been staying since Roxana’s arrest in late January.

For the first time, her mother told me the circumstances of the arrest that happened in Roxana’s apartment, on the fifth floor of a small apartment building, in a quiet back alley. The police came in at night, went through her things, and took her away, said her mom.

Her parents were in pretty good spirits, considering. Partly because they had just seen Roxana on Monday, who ordered her mom not to worry.

They told me she looked frail and had lost some weight, but that she was in good spirits, too. She also informed them that she would begin a hunger strike tomorrow.

Both her parents tried to talk her out of it, which they had done before. But she refused.

"I tried to dissuade her but she said, ‘not this time’," Reza Saberi told me. "She is, this time, determined to go on a hunger strike because she says she doesn’t deserve to be in there in the prison, she hasn’t done anything wrong. She should not be there."

For the first time, her father also gave details about her "confession." She told him it was coerced and that they scared her with threats, including a threat to kill her.

"She said they coerced her, they scared her … they frightened her that if she doesn’t sign it they go in there and kill her," Reza Saberi said.

He said his daughter signed the confession only when she was promised that she would be released if she did. Her father also pointed out that the confession has no legal force because no lawyer was present. Roxana later recanted in the presence of her lawyer and in court.

Both her parents seem cautiously confident that Roxana’s lawyers will be more successful on the appeal, which could be decided within a week.

But they said they fear she’s being used as a political pawn to force confessions, or perhaps a prison exchange with the United States.

The case is starting to get more attention here in Iran, which may be one reason that both President Ahmadinejad and the chief judge here have said that the case should be reviewed and that Roxana’s rights should be fully protected.

Before I left the apartment, Akiko sat at Roxana’s piano (she told me Roxana not only played but composed songs as well) and shyly played a few bars of a Japanese ballad.

Then she pointed to a piece of calligraphy on Roxana’s mantle, which had been painted by her father, which Akiko said gives her peace of mind about her daughter.

"I interpret it as peace of mind, peace be with you, calm, serene, no matter what happens, we love you," she said.

It’s a little after midnight here.

I’m heading to bed.

It’s odd how nice you are to terrorists. You sure seemed to love it there in Iran. I bet you can get an apartment cheap. Who cares if it’s late and you are going to bed? Journalism is truly dead.

Who cares? She made the choice to go to that hell hole! Let her rot there. How about addressing your President’s and his Uncle Tom, Holder’s decision to release highly classified information regarding torture used by our country (which produced results that prevented planned attacks) and who may allow prosecuting those in our own intelligence community for acts that resulted in preventing the deaths of many Americans! What about this travesty of justice, GEORGE! I guess that wasn’t on Carville’s and Emmanuel’s talking points for the day, huh?

Hey, Mr. Step-on-all-of-us. When you get your talking points from Mr. Half-White ohbama. Tell him that God appoints the leaders of the nations and that he had nothing to do with it. I can hardly wait until 2010 when the neo-libs will be thrown out and ohbama will be a lame duck and can’t get any of his socialist agendas passed. That is if the America I used to know still exists. I have my doubts. Don’t tread on me!

(Excuse those last 2 comments. Apparently a bag of nuts spilled somewhere.)
Pres. Obama needs to be more forceful on the issue. Maybe behind closed doors he is, but it seems to the rest of us that action is seriously lacking!

Posted by: Happy Bigot | April 22, 2009, 5:01 pm 5:01 pm

Yes, obama, from this point shall be called Nostradumbass because he can see the future. He needs to continue bowing and apologizing to the world how bad America is. Then, and only then will the world collectively forgive us for never coming to the worlds rescue and spilling the blood of our sons for their turd-world countries. Take away everything the U.S.A. has giving the world and Earth would be in the dark ages. Listen up world, you need to ask forgiveness to the people of the U.S.A.
As long as Nostradumbass is president, Americans will be hurt, ships will be taken, terror shall come to our shores. There is your “Change” 51% of you who voted for him.

I don’t want to pass judgement…maybe she really didn’t do anything and she should be let go.
But the only people that do hunger strikes are people that know they did something wrong and they are trying to be a smart ass and stop eating like that actually makes a difference…Gandhi, blacks in the south…they all did similar protests and cause they were intent in disobedience. If i were a regular guy put in jail for something i didn’t commit, i would be eating every crumb i got..not going on a hunger strike

Posted by: F'real | April 22, 2009, 5:09 pm 5:09 pm

Well, if she _doesn’t_ go on a hunger strike, she will probably have a lot of horrible things in store for her future. If I was in her shoes, I would probably opt for a hunger strike. Not that I think it would do much good . . . it just may be the lesser of two evils.
I don’t think most people realize what could be in store for her in the near future.
quote: “I asked the president, as a goodwill gesture, . . . to go see her myself. . . . Fine with him, he said, but it’s not his decision. ‘Let’s see if our judiciary allows for that’ . . . ”
Baloney! The president of Iran could have made that decision, but he preferred not to.

Great idea Happy! They can all go on hunger strikes and fulfill all of their ridiculous wishes:
1. reduce world population
2. reduce greenhouse gases
3. less animals raised for consumption
4. more clean air (and likely less hot)
5. better quality of life or the rest
6. survival of NYT-increase in obits
7. more carbon offsets for rest of us
8. fewer losers mooching off the doers
9. less voters for O. Hussein
10.less voters for stellar dems in cong

The louder the left screams about the tea parties, the more I know they are effective. If it wasn’t a threat to them, they would be silent about it. They protest too much about it. They are so transparent. If a third party arises that sticks to our core conservative beliefs and adheres to the Constitution, I’d join it. The name of the party should be “the Tea Party”. Sign me up.

The majority of people who’ve commented on this blog are ignorant and arrogant racists who do not undestand world affairs.
The state of Iran isn’t a “terrorist state”, perhaps if the U.S. didn’t meddle in their affairs, they would leave us alone. In fact, I know they would.
Now, being an American, I’m very aware of what my country’s foreign policy is, and considering it’s controlled by those who obtain power through illegetimate means (money), I find us to be dealing with unfortunate circumstances.
Neither Obama nor McCain were right for the U.S. And neither Obama nor McCain could solve the problems we deal with in the Middle East. And remember, most of our problems in the Middle East are either caused or provoked by we, “the freedom fighters.”
I encourage everyone to look up the difference in definition between “freedom fighter” and “terrorist”, you’ll find that the only difference is a matter of perspective.
(and before you call me UnAmerican or tell me that “I hate America”, think about how ridiculous that is. Hating the government is completely different from hating the country, and until one can seperate those two entities, then one fails to see the illegetimacy in fascism.)

Hey “Adam”,
Your points are well taken but there are faults in some of your arguments.
1. The semantics of how you describe Iran as a state are irrelevant. Bottom line is if they one day have the capacity to create nuclear weapons,it is in the best interest of most other countries to prevent that from occurring. Therefore, “meddling” in their affairs justified. If someone has proof that the nuclear development is some conspiracy developed by our government, then surely your President will reveal this and we can all rest easy
2. You are obviously young and/or naive as you make substantive generalities such as “my country’s foreign policy is, and considering it’s controlled by those who obtain power through illegitimate means (money)” is ridiculous. Yes, money has a lot to do with power but its not all accomplished through illegitimate means.
You seem to dislike our capitalist system so much (and yes it does have flaws), why don’t you go somewhere else? I have spent over three years working in over 40 countries (incl. Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Indonesia) and have worked side-by-side with, eaten with and been invited into the homes of many of these people. I have engaged in spirited debate about our government and its foreign policy. At the end of the day though, a significant number of these people, admit that they wished they had the freedoms and opportunities that those of us in the U.S. have. There are plenty of other countries to move to if you are so unhappy here, sir.

Your posts lack any content or substance…Dave, the Reagan people bargained with the Iranian terrorists behind the scenes to delay the release of the hostages until AFTER the end of Carter’s term…remember the Iran-Contra affair when the military-industrial complex sold weapons to Iran to illegally fund the Nicaraguans? they decided not to prosecute Reagan because he was too gone with Alzheimer’s most of his second term…politics certainly makes strange bedfellows, i.e. Donald Rummysfeld and his infamous affair with Saddam Hussein

Considering that the UN is supporting Iran as a leader in human rights (via Iran’s role in the Durban II conference), we should support this sovereign nation’s right to jail those who violate its laws. In this case, we have to assume a proper trial and punishment assessment in accordance with the laws of Iran. Therefore, any notion of “wrongful” inprisonment is based on personal prejudice and ignoring the wisdom of the UN.
Rock on, Iran. If you jail them all, you’ll get the guilty.

Notice that most (not all) of the liberal-leaning comments are simply attacks. There are no counter-points, discussion of the issue (or other issues for that matter),facts or even flawed arguments much less valid ones. Nada! Nothing. Everything most of them utter is simply emotion-based drivel or anger. Anger at what? You tell me…I guess they took the term “the meek shall inherit the earth” in a literal sense…By the way, what’s B. Hussein doing to stop the war in Iraq? Afghanistan? close Guantanamo? How do you like the “lobbyist-free” administration? How about that transparency? Love the 5-day public review of bills prior to signing. Tell me about B. Hussein’s battle against pork spending? (no muslim pun intended) How about that rationed healthcare for seniors hidden away in the so-called “stimulus bill”? Placed in by none other than Tom “brother can you spare a limo” Daschle. Drudge right wing hawkers….yup that’s us alright! We are here in droves. Mike, we just drive you up the wall, don’t we??
We “right wing hawks” actually care about the security and safety of America. Do you Mike? Nahhh, you would rather sit down for an afternoon cup of tea in the well manicured Iranian garden of “I’m-a-dinner-Jacket”, or jet off to Cuba to smoke a good Havana cigar with Fidel and Raoul.
You could even squeeze into your busy peacenik world peace tour, a comradly-like discussion with Kim Jong-Il about which hair gel/mousse he prefers to get that coveted”bedhead look!”
On a more serious note, though, and for the rest of the serious posters here, I hope that Roxana Saberi is eventually let go.
It is possible she is a U.S. spy acting as a journalist….if so, the CIA will not flinch an inch to acknowledge her nor rescue her.
However, if this woman was unlawfully detained and jailed, then she has nothing to fear because our beloved “Messiah”, praise-be-his-name, is”so loved” around the world, that Ahmadenijad won’t be able to resist throwing the jail door for the young woman.
Now, just like George Stephanopoulus, we can rest our heads on our collective pillows knowing that with Obama at the helm, that all is love and peace in the world.

Note to Mike: you are very right that the general public of Iran are a proud people with over 5000 years of history. Too bad they are being suppressed by their leader, who by the way is trying to develop nuclear weapons ASAP and is supported by most of Iran’s “spiritual leaders” in his effort. I really don’t see anyone dropping bombs on the people of Iran. Blowing up the nuclear weapons related facilities, yes; blowing up civilians intentionally, you are way out there if you believe that. Since you bring up Iraq and Afghanistan, why has your President not pulled out immediately, as promised? And by the way, better go check out us right wing hawks favorite website, you know, the D-word Report…Apparently the Taliban are taking over cities and implementing strict Islamic law as we blog; all within 60 miles of the capital of Pakistan (or Paukaustaun as B. Hussein so eloquently pronounces it – I’ve been there, they pronounce it freakin Pakistan!) The Pakis already have fully functional nuclear weapons…hmmm that put’s your peace-loving President in quite a conundrum doesn’t it? Let’s see, he took 4 days to decide whether or not to take out the teenage pirates in the lifeboat without power…gotta do some polling first you know….I wonder how long before he makes a decision on the Taliban taking over Pakistan? I’ve got it! Just call the UN and they can fix everything.

Posted by: barney fife | April 22, 2009, 8:15 pm 8:15 pm

barney fife, I have never implied that I’m an Obama supporter. I believe his Afghanistan and Pakistan are a disaster and will cause major blowback in the years to come. We should be getting out of the middleeast in its entirety. And if you have read the reports, Iran IS NOT making any bombs. please understand that there is a difference between reaching the point where they can decide to make bombs and actually doing it. And no, if you think that bombing their nuclear sites will not cause a blowback you are sadly mistaken. remember that iranian guy who fled to the united states because he was tortured? they asked him what he would do if we bombed Iran, he said he would go back and fight.
Nationalism is very strong with these people. Remember our own 9/11? Everyone stood behind bush back then.

Mike….you have truly amazed me….you now are able to see into my mind, heart, and soul! Wow! You are a talented guy.
You ought to go far if you need to make extra money as a “touring psychic”.
And who talked about wanting to turn any country into ashes??? Not me! No worries, Mike. The U.S.(Obama) is staying out of interfering with Iran’s nuclear proliferation program. We all KNOW it is critical for “I’m-a-dinner-jacket” to have nuclear energy available. Iran sitting on a huge oil reserve isn’t “quite enough” to keep the economy going.
If you have a gripe about the Iraq war, I suggest you take it up with the U.N. who had a myriad of concerns about WMD’s hidden in Iraq.
And as for Afghanistan? Certainly it would have been preferable after 9-11 to allow the ongoing proliferation of terrorist training camps and hide-outs to remain? But, don’t tell me that you are one of those conspiracy buffs who believes that the “evil” United States purposely brought down the Twin Towers for some unknown political reason???
P.S. Look to Israel in the coming weeks or months to perform some amazing surgical strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities/uranium centrifuges.
Heck, the U.S. doesn’t even need to get their hands dirty on this one!

Good Story and good job Mr. Stephanopoulos. I’m not surprised at the ignorant zionist fed racists responding on here, what would you expect from supporters of the racist apartheid state. I had to laugh at the people who called Tehran a “hellhole”, I guess they didn’t even read your article and likely have no clue of the beauty of Iran short of what their war mongering puppeteers tell them. There will be No war. Iran has not and will not attack another country, they haven’t in 2500 years and promise not to in the future. The zionists only attack defenseless women and children and they do not have ability to attack Iran. There will be many honest reviews like this story in the future as America begins to understand that Iran is their friend and the real enemy of the American people is AIPAC and the lobby of a foreign government in Washington DC. Thank You again and God Bless!!

Well ChrisB, I disagree with alot of your posts here but you’re right about this one…alot of ranting and no serious debate.
Don’t we get enough of personally attacking and calling names on cable?
I say debate the facts and opinions and leave the drivel to the fringe sites
There is plenty to be critical of the former president and this president without going off the cliff…geez

We can always disagree and still be constructive. That’s the beauty of democracy and free speech. And it would be a pretty dull world if everyone was of the same opinion.
What I see in the comments above however is a far cry form a (healthy or even constructive) debate. And this from people who seem to hold themselves to standards that are supposedly better than those of Iran’s leader.

Mike, I have news….
Iran may not be making any bombs (do you have perfect knowledge…how?, but they have clearly gone down the 20+ yr hard road to make fuel for the bomb, and they’ve mastered the process.Yes, all legally.
For Iran, the next steps are child’s play. They can do this covertly (or overtly, if they kick the inspectors out) at will.
But that isn’t really the question-
The question is, what will the U.S. and Israel do NOW?
Obama vowed ‘Iran cannot be allowed to have a nuclear weapon’
It looks like they will prove him wrong.
(Although, they will never admit they have it, like Israel)
No coutry has ever been invaded, conquered or annihilated tha has possessed nuclear missiles since they were invented. Add the prestige factor in and a possible seat at the table…
It is heady stuff for Iran.

Posted by: J House | April 22, 2009, 9:12 pm 9:12 pm

For anyone who blames Roxana for her situation, GFY. Islamist Iran detests women, executes children (140 on death row in Iran) and they exterminate gays, over 4000 to date. It’s state policy. Has been for thirty years. They even murder bloggers now. And you’re blaming HER?
This is Jimmy Carter’s Hostage Crisis all over again. I don’t know why we even deal with Iran. They’ve already demanded apologies for 300 and The Wrestler from Team Oscar, and responded to Obama’s Peace Video with Death To America rallies. Both olive branches slapped out of Obama’s hand.
Not to mention the fact Iran is supplying both the Taliban and Iraqi militias with heavy weaponry, including EFPs, which have killed nearly 200 US soldiers to date.
Anyone who thinks Iran is worthy of diplomacy is as hopelessly duped as the people who thought the same of Hitler. I only hope it doesn’t end as bad. Given our current government, I’m expecting the worst.
Fortunately, at least Israel will take care of the Iran nuke problem for us. Obama sure won’t have the guts to.

I’m surprised that the drudge linked to this fair report. He usually links to pro racist apartheid state propaganda.
I’m really glad that the israeli’s voted in who they did. The veil has been dropped and now we Americans are seeing who the real violent threat is to the United States.
israel was born of violence and requires violence to continue to exist. Just yesterday, Lieberman, the new israeli foreign minister, said in an interview “Believe me, America accepts all our decisions,”.
Now I’m an American soldier, and we Americans are NO ONES puppet. I expect President Obama to act in the best interest of the United States first and only.
israel has as much right to exist as does the Palestinians. The American position is that if you wish to be accepted and respected as legitimate, you must offer the same humanity to others. That includes the Palestinians.
We don’t want to hear all of these “conditions” in order to respect the Palestinian position. If you want any more American money, you will step back to the green line and create a Palestinian state NOW. You call yourself moral superior, well, SHOW US. Create a fair Palestinian state and the world will support you.
As far as attacking Iran goes, Iran is not a terrorist state, a terrorist state causes terror in the world. Iran has not attacked or even threatened to attack anyone in a millennium. Iran has signed and followed the NPT and America will support their legal position.
America, under President Obama is not going to control Iran through warfare, we are going to dominate and control Iran with Honey. Just like the Russians, if we help to build their reactors, then we will know what is happening on the ground. If we are smart, we will also ink future Oil deals with Iran.
Iran is not America’s enemy, and we Americans are opening our eyes to who causes the death of our soldiers and our children.
The false information the zionists provided regarding WMD fooled us into going to war in Iraq. Well guess what israel… Fool me once, shame on you, Fool me twice, shame on me. President Obama will not be fooled.
It’s time for israel to realize that if they want to be respected like others, than you will be held to the moral degree that everyone else is as well.
Learn to live nice with your neighbors or you will loose American support.
Thank you, May the near future offer the Palestinian and the israeli people peace!!
Effendi!!

About 45,000 people die everyday from causes that could be cured for pennies. When the government wants you to know something they use the controlled media to show you, making it news.

Few US officials have the guts to admit we have been in a low level war with Iran since 1979.
Few doubt that they have had a hand in killing Americans in Iraq, Khobar towers and all othe proxy killings by Hezbollah
Obama is at war but just doesn’t know it yet

These MSM fake journalists seem to love to re-lock themselves into “new” forms of the same old unchanging blandness. Step-on-us as dubbed by another poster is as un-imaginative as his bosses hired him to be, since is main job is to protect corrupt DC operatives/friends at any and all costs. The fake concern about this brave, unfortunate woman is old hat, trying to get us to buy into his fake humanity. He/libs of my former party don’t care a whit for the death and destruction Jimmy’s gift to the world inflicts upon the Brave, Long-Suffering Iranian People. There is no one more stupid than their much-vaunted PhD’s from American universities. This lapdog press outlet will never tell on it’s lover.

‘Iran is not a terrorist state’?
Who are you kidding?…they overtly support Hezbollah and Hamas.Terrorists regularly travel in and out of Iran seemingly at will.
Their hands are all over the Khobar attack…Clinton AND Bush just wouldn’t admit it publicly, because they knew how limited their options were.
Tons of evidence exists that IRG forces have helped kill Americans in Iraq.
(you may call not call that ‘terrorism’, but we don’t care)

I read so much misinformation here it’s sophomoric the level of understanding of geo-politics. The right/left, along with the other opposing religious and political paradigms, that most are trapped and compartmentalized in, are alive and well and control all real opposition. Google 911essentials.com to understand that both parties are really one.

I think its a shame that she is in prison, although I believe that she will be released, and the US is doing the right thing by trying to engage in positive relation with all the countries that we have been told are suppost to be our enemies. If you want to breed hate and dissent from other countries, then give them the silent treatment. It won’t make them leave you alone, just try harder to get your attention…..using acts of terrorism as their tools. By talking and listening to their concerns, you treat them as equals and partners in a peaceful future.

After 5 years of asking to go to Tehran you are granted a pass? Well, guess what? I am granted my second pass to that hole of the Middle East. It’s called- a tour. Yup you guessed right! I serve in the military. While these bleeding hearts go to Tehran to save some gal that dug herself into a problem I am wishing I could just stay home and never see that place. He would actually fit right in in your socialist government.
P.S. How did formulate the opinion that those of us who don’t necessarily agree with you are racist? Am I a racist just because I vehemently oppose B. Hussein’s policies and beliefs in what my country should be like? Remeber, his parents were both black and white. So does that mean you can have your cake and eat it too? (Whoa! Lots of unconstructive invective in prior comments!) Moving on…
Great view into this politically complex situation. Many Americans don’t appreciate the dominance of domestic Iranian political considerations in their foreign policy. Conspiracy theory-itis is a common ailment among Iranians, exemplified by the 9/11 false-flag theory the spokesman mentioned. The undercurrent of suspicion latent in the culture, reinforced by the conditioning of political dogma, makes a breakthrough in U.S.-Iran relations problematic. However, there are deeply ingrained cultural elements, such as hospitality and good manners, which can offer an alternate entree to functional relations. Also, it should be noted that the center of Iranian power is the supreme leader, not the president.
God bless Roxanna Saberi and her family. Our hearts are with you!

quite amazed that so many ignorant idiots have posted comments here. unfortunately, it seems like half of the idiots that are running their mouths here think the U.S.- Iran relations started 29 years ago and with the hostage crisis. And we’re wondering why bush was elected and why the U.S. is in so much trouble, economically, politically, and internationaly!
