McCain Guru to Urge GOP to Back Gay Marriage
ABC News’ Teddy Davis reports: Former top McCain adviser Steve Schmidt is planning to use a Friday speech to the Log Cabin Republicans to urge the GOP to drop its opposition to same-sex marriage. "I’m confident American public opinion will continue to move on the question toward majority support, and sooner or later the Republican Party will catch up to it," Schmidt plans to say according to excerpts provided to ABC News. Schmidt’s push for Republicans to endorse same-sex marriage comes as his party is grappling with a string of gay rights victories in Iowa, Vermont, and Washington, D.C. Schmidt’s former boss, Arizona Sen. John McCain (R), continues to oppose same-sex marriage while also opposing a federal constitutional amendment prohibiting it. McCain’s daughter, however, has become an outspoken advocate of same-sex marriage recently and is slated to address the Log Cabin Republicans on Saturday evening. The topic of her address is: "Losing the Next Generation: How can the Republican Party Attract More Young Voters?" In his Friday noontime speech, Schmidt is planning to argue that same-sex marriage is in step with principles that conservatives hold dear. "There is a sound conservative argument to be made for same-sex marriage," Schmidt plans to say. "I believe conservatives, more than liberals, insist that rights come with responsibilities. No other exercise of one’s liberty comes with greater responsibilities than marriage." "It cannot be argued that marriage between people of the same sex is un American or threatens the rights of others," he will say. "On the contrary," he will say, "it seems to me that denying two consenting adults of the same sex the right to form a lawful union that is protected and respected by the state denies them two of the most basic natural rights affirmed in the preamble of our Declaration of Independence — liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That, I believe, gives the argument of same sex marriage proponents its moral force." While seeking to appeal to conservative principles, Schmidt is also planning to make an electoral case for same-sex marriage. The former McCain adviser believes that Barack Obama’s large margin of support over McCain among voters under 30 was due, in part, to younger Americans being comfortable with giving gay couples equal rights under the law. "Some Republicans believe the period of self-examination within the party necessitated by the loss of our majority status is mostly a question of whether the party should become more moderate or conservative," Schmidt plans to say. "I think that’s a false choice. We need to grow our coalition, but as I said, that’s hard to do if we lose some votes while gaining others." Prior to leading McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign, Schmidt managed California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s (R) 2006 re-election campaign. He also served in the Bush White House where he played a leading role in the confirmations of Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. He is currently a partner with Mercury Public Affairs in Sacramento, Calif. He first endorsed same-sex marriage in an interview last month with the Washington Blade, a gay newspaper. Following Schmidt’s address to the Log Cabin Republicans, he is planning to take questions from convention attendees. He will then hold a media availability. The Log Cabin convention is taking place at the Westin City Center in Washington, D.C.

This guy is right. Marriage is a conservative institution with real rights and responsibilities. If you want to show you support such a conservative institution, you should recruit as many people into that lifestyle as possible. Converting liberal single gays into conservative married gay couples does a lot to dissipate the liberal single lifestyle gays currently have. Copnservative married gay couiples are more likely to support adoption over abortion and fiscal responsibility over Vegas-style banking.

“sodomy is what accelerated the spread if aids. Homosexuals should be registered sex offenders.”
Sodomy is hardly a homosexual-only practice. Look around you…many of your girlfriend’s love it in the shooter.
Also, vaginal sex also accelerated the spread of AIDS.

??Rick… gay marriage = child sexual abuse?? Maybe you have US confused with Saudi Arabia, where marital child sexual rape (hetero) is common, as is execution of gays.
We have laws in most states here to protect children from early marriage & sexual abuse, laws that would not be overturned by GLBT adult marriage.
Take a deep breath & thank your deity that there is no gay in your town stalking you for illicit sex. The gay population is approx 10%. If you met 10+ people today, at work or in public, odds are you interacted with a gay person. Scary?

“if you allow gay marriages to be granted, you are condoneing sodomy against children. Think about it. Your senses will catch up to all of you…”
If you accept that line of reasoning, you have to conclude that traditional marriage leads to heterosexual abuse of children.
Oh, yes, and did you know that extreme hard line pro-lifers promote the spread or Aids?
Think about it! They oppose the use of condoms, therefore they must be in favor of unprotected sex, therefore they promote the spread of Aids.

Once again, a moot point.
There are gay people getting married every day, and not just in states that permit it. They are being married in most mainstream churches by clergy who have long ago resolved this issue in their own consciences.
Additionally, gay couples have been setting up right of survivorship deeds, powers of attorney, etc. to approximate rights accorded to heterosexual couples. Yes, there are some inequalities but nothing like what 60′s era civil rights legislation was trying to address.
The real division concerning gay marriage is in the gay community itself. For all those gays who want to get married, I say, “Just Do It.” If you’re having trouble finding clergy do perform the ceremony or a lawyer to draw up papers, I’ll help.

To be gay or not (marriage) is the question? Since when. As it states in the bible, God loves all his children but where does it say it is ok with Him to prostitute or “choose” to be gay? He does and never has approved of this type of behavior. Neither do I? And for any priest, Rabbi, Reverand, Minister to be able to hold ‘a’ bible in his/her hand and ‘pronouce them as partners for life’? I don’t think so. Simply put until this issue goes away or gets defeated once and for all count me out. Meaning don’t shove it in my face go back, do your thing but behind those closed doors for the sake of others who feel as I do and I know I’m not the only one. Others for whatever reason choose not to express their opinions and that is their ‘choice’.

With all the people divorcing and cheating maybe the straight population is just fearful that gays will be better at the marriage thing, just as they are at revamping bad neighborhoods/city sections and then all the straights move in when it’s safe and cleaned up.

Sure, the GOP can approve of gay marriage, abortion, big taxes and a socialist form of government. But then why would we need two parties for that? We already have that choice with the Democrats. The guy is clearly out to destroy the Republican party with brilliant advice like this, because they’d lose 90% of their us as supporters. Let’s hear it for diversity. Ha.
Posted by: Ingrid | April 17, 2009, 5:27 pm 5:27 pm
The “father” of modern conservativism, Barry Goldwater, believed the government had no business interfering with the personal lives of people. TRUE conservatives would support pro-choice and gay rights. No one is telling people the HAVE to get an abortion or HAVE to marry someone of the same sex. No matter what the government says, churches can not be required to perform same sex weddings.
Posted by: mbd | April 17, 2009, 5:37 pm 5:37 pm
With the divorce rate at around 50%, too many people cheating on their spouses, etc. I don’t think the sanctity of marriage is being taken very seriously right now. Honestly, I don’t see how two gay people wanting to be married will affect my marriage or anyone else’s. The only thing it will affect is to be a small boon to businesses involved in weddings as all the gay couples who have waited to get married will finally be allowed to.
This whole ‘controversy’ reminds me of the fears some had when bi-racial marriages started happening years ago. The fear-mongers used the same tired arguments: it isn’t natural, it will destroy marriage as an institution, blah, blah, blah. The arguments were silly then and they are still silly today.
Posted by: Lydia | April 17, 2009, 5:37 pm 5:37 pm
Well… I dunno. The GOP is not a church; it’s a club; we get to do what we want, not what others like better. Seems to me that as long as there are only two parties nationwide, we will get back in there as soon as the suburban swing voters get tired of Democrats, no matter what our platform actually says. And come to think of it, it’s kinda cozy being a tiny party of like-minded people who get to run the world every four to eight years without having to work too hard to get the chance. Why would we want to share that with anyone else? Losing elections hurts a bit, but it also increases the influence of those of us who remain. So we’ve got it made. Let’s just make money while we can and answer the call when it comes. Reforming the party just defeats its purpose and will make no difference to the voters in the end.

The Evangelical based Republican party created by Karl Rove in 2000 will NEVER accept gay marriage and any Republican who suggests the party lessen it’s opposition won’t win the local, county, state and Federal House/Senate seats they hold. Certainly many Republicans believe that the hypocracy is quite evident, but so was slave holding. Sad. Really sad.

Good for McCain. I voted Obama and think this country needs to start pointing to the future. Gay or same sex marriage is going to happen and be well accepted one day. Why not now? Some Right Wingers want to keep the country living in the past and have very closed minds. In 1990 92 percent of the country professed to being religous or christian. Now its 62 percent. We are slowly becomming a population of realist instead of basing laws on fable books of religion. Just like open relationships with Cuba. Its going to happen, why not now. The old Republican old fashioned, out of date, closed minded days are comming to an end.

this statement by mccains head GOP advisor is a big sign that the tipping point has been reached beyond which society won’t turn back, just like in the civil rights movement when society shifted enough to see that blacks shouuld have equal rights… the GOP needs to take back it’s original goals (listen to Ron Paul a bit)… but mark my words, Mccain’s daughter will blossom and grow and be a HUGE person to watch if the republicans are to ever survive… all you bush/cheney holdouts who follow rush limbagh and fox news (right wing extremists icall them) need to see your gig is up and you have painted yourself into a corner

once the true republicans stand up to the religitards that have hijacked their party, they will fade into oblivion… yes, it won’t be easy to stand up to the palin-born-again base, but those people have no future (although i’d love to see palin run, just to ensure another obama victory in 2012!!!)… but if the republican party wants to get back to their roots, they need to focus on the economy and infrastructure and caring for the planet (yes, republicans want to survive too) and get OUT of the bedrooms and religion and morals that is dragging them deeper into oblivion

Sometimes even married men to women with children. Statistics prove this out. So before the ignorant keep spreading their lack of real knowledge, same-sex marriages will not lead to legal sex with minors; sex with animals; marrying your cousin; or the destruction of heterosexual marriage which by-the-way is about 50% divorce rate. Have fun with your ridiculous mentality.

grow some BRAINS and start respecting the young, minorities, gays and others that also make up citizens of this country and VOTE !!!!!
It is time for the GOP to GROW UP and stop with the 1940′s mentality.

Listen…Listen…It’s not about religion and it’s not about rights (there is no constitutional right to marry)it’s about propogation. The natural act of heterosexual marriage is procreation (I know some can’t have kids, but that is not the point). Procreation increases the tax base. Very simple people. The natural act of homosexual marriage does not lead to procreation (yes some can artifically enseminate – but again this is not the point). Thus, the government has a vested interest in supporting heterosexual marriage and denying homosexual marriage, just like it supports all things that increase the tax base. Very simple precept.

Ah-The country is changing and heading for the future. Whether its same sex marriage or relationships with Cuba the days of the old Republican right wing etremist is coming to an end. No more all white, no more all Christian, no more closed minds and wanting to live in the past. In 1990 92 percent of this country claimed to be Christian or religous. Now its 62 percent. We are slowly becoming realist in this country and the days of making policy and laws on beliefs of a fable book are going away. I am so happy to see us starting to wake up and move to the future. Its going to happen so why not now. Cuba will become a better place as our country will when we open the doors and end the embargo. The world will become a better place and man will get along better with their fellow man when people can experiance eachothers cuture and worlds instead of everyone hiding behind political fences put up by old thinking, live in the past political idealist. Lets move the world forward. We all need eachother and that will become even more true as time passes. We live in a country that produces 5 percent of the world energy but consume 25 percent. We are already relying on communist China for money. As we open doors and knock down barriers we will see a one world under God instead of a one nation under God. And it wont matter what God one believes in. A higher power can be anything you want it to be. Religion or God to me is like the center of a bikes wheel and all the different spokes are the different religons that end up at the same center. Just nice to see us finally moving in the right direction. Its also ok if you do not believe in any God. Live and let live because we are all here on this earth together. My humble opinion

Look at it this way:
-Business investment – Supports the economy, government supports through tax breaks.
-Home ownership – supports the economy, government supports via tax breaks on interest.
-Charitable donations – Supports the economy (in that there is that much less the goverment has to pay for), government support via tax breaks.
-Heterosexual marriage – natural outcome is children, which increase the tax base/economy (more tax payers), the goverment supports heterosexual marriage.
-Homosexual marriage – natural outcome is NOT procreation, no increase to the tax base, no government support.
SIMPLE.

Rgeier …. you don’t know what you are talking about. REAL republicans don’t hate “lil Bush” as you put it. REAL Republicans live by principles and so did Bush. Let’s just see what happens if a terrorist attack takes place under an Obama Administration (which kind of seems likely since they are telling our enemies exactly how to attack us and what our tactics will be if we do indeed capture them). Let’s see how many people still love Obama then. Everyone is a critic of Bush …. but you know what? He kept us safe since 9/11 and he didn’t do it by waltzing around bowing down to kings and telling foreign leaders that America is weak.

I for one am for gay marriage. It paves the way for me to by lovely canteloupe (I cut a hole in the side of it) to get hitched. I call my sweet fruit, Buster Brown.
I always knew I was different, even as a child, but thanks to my nurturing left wing kindergarten teacher and school therapist (they were lesbians). I learned it was ok to yearn to be with melons.
Sure I was teased and bullied, I had low self-esteem and would seek only large melons. I would only be with big fat watermelons.
Then one day, I was in the grocery market fruit and veggie aisle and who’d imagine of all places. I found true love. I am not embarrassed to say, I got a slice later on that night.
If marriage isnt between a man and a woman, well then hell! I sure be able to tie the knot with my precious melon.
And any woman should be able to marry her frozen banana lover (or cucumber if they swing that way)!
We will win the gay marriage. Someone asked whats next that we will fight for? That we always have to have some cause to fight for.
I nominate those whose parters are killed and eaten by vegans!
Vegans hate and kill and maim the partners we love!
Marriage for all and no more eating vegatables and fruits. (unless you eat them like I do *wink wink*)

The Navy did what it had to do to save a mans life. Just as if American teenagers were holding hostages at gun point. “If the courts and allow
gay mariages that sends
a message that it is ok
to have anal sex..god says
it is a sin to be homosexual.”
Listen, I’m in a heterosexual relationship and enjoy anal sex. To say that anal=homosexual is reddiculous.
I’ve been hearing very absurd ideas that gay marrage will mean that beastiality, phedophillia, and AIDs will spread. Now, to all of those people, gays and lesbians aren’t going anywhere. If their presence in everyday life and main stream media will affect any of those things, it would have already happened.
Denying gay people the right to wed is the same thing as denying mixed-raced couples that same right. That is considered absurd now, but less then an century ago it was law.
I’m not too concerned though, once gay marrage is legal, it will take a generation or two for the bible-thumping biggots to die out and then it will be considered just as normal as any other relationship.

The Palin brood put the “D” in dysfunction. Obama is the candidate with the strong family values. Look at his sweet and well-behaved kids compared to the wacky Palin brood. It’s actually difficult for me to believe that I was once a registered republican. The party could many years ago lay claim to being a fiscally conservative party. That hasn’t been the case for a very long time and is actually laughable to hear it still tossed about. The party has become the hateful crotchety old man party. And even though I am now a crotchety old man it still sounds older and crotchetier than even I can stand. It’s as though they have staked out every anti-US Constitution and personal freedom position they can find. Everyone knows that same sex marriage does not affect one person who isn’t gay. And anyone with even a superficial understanding of the US Constitution knows that opposing it is not only a lost cause but it’s just wrong. The spirit of the US Constitution is to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority. Why is the Rep.party so hardheadly set on being and/or representing the tyrannical majority? Stand up for what’s right. Stand up for the constitution. You can’t go wrong with that.

Christian Conservative is what we call a ONE ISSUE voter… abortion is the be all and end all of who is worthy of being president of the USA to these people… obviously, clear thinking people would NEVER use one issue to vote for such a dynamic and multifaceted position which requires SO MANY different leadership abilities to be considered… luckily, america is much much wiser than these narrow minded people who think praying and voting against a pro-choice candidate is all we need to think about

If you believe that it is ok and dont repent for that, you will not go to heaven. You cant go to heaven just by going to church or being a nice person.
Getting into heaven is like going throught the eye of a needle.Very few will make it there compared to those who will live in hell. And it will all be there choice.

morethanpolite – to answer your question about what happened to the republican party, the answer is it was coopted into the party of bullies and power hungry and greedy… of course these people needed votes, so they duped the religitards into thinking they were the party of christianity and social conservatism (laughing at them behind their backs), and they also used the angry uneducated white poor folk by pandering to bitterness and being bullies… but what happened is their deck of cards collapsed right after the fiscal conservatives and get-out-of-my-bedroom republicans (i.e. Ron Paul types) jumped ship, leaving only the angry white bullies (limbaugh and fox news) and christian conservatives (abortion and being saved = litmus test for being president)… of course, this is what we now call ‘right wing extremism’ because these same people are livid and shocked (yes, they are shocked because they are not very bright) shocked because the “planet shifted left overnight” … of course this is their viewpoint, but the planet did not shift left overnight, it took 8 years of proof with the bush/cheney regime to show that greed and trickledown capitalism only helps a very tiny sliver of society at the very top of the food chain… of course the world breathed a hugh sigh of relieve last november (i can still feel it watching the election results come in)

earth_not_flat perhaps you’re right. It happened slowly and subtly. And I look at comments like the one from “I.C. Thru U” about not wanting to “sanctify Gay marriage” and it turns my stomach. You could transplant hateful people like that back to 1967 when interracial marriage was finally settled by the Supreme Court and their argument would fit like a glove. Think about that – 1967 – in my lifetime the SC overturned the “Racial Integrity Act”. that prevented interracial marriage and here we are again.

pro-choice, pro-equality for gays?
That would be pro abortion and pretending to be normal.

Yes Waysie from way up top – that’s the ticket! What republicans don’t seem to get about gay marriage is, it will make gay people more likely to become republicans! Marriage settles people down, gets them on that straight and narrow path. You think gay marriage will be different? Look around America… the reason many gay people are so flamboyant and promiscuous is because you’ve condemned them to live as singles forever. Notice how you have far less of an issue with lesbians – because they’re stable anyway! Ultra… stable. If you let the men get married, that will serve to iron them out into just the kind of rich successful guys you’re used to having at all your fundraisers.

What McCain is saying about the Republican Party and ‘gay’ HOMOSEXUAL marriage just proves that his stands in the past have been purely political and not his true beliefs. No wonder he lost the presidential election to a socialist. He won’t win another national election either… No wonder he considered becoming a Democrat…he should! He fits in better there than as a stumbling block for the Republican Party…

Don’t forget what God said about homosexuality, it is a sin.
I know most supporters of same sex unions would like to do away with God, but you can’t.

If an election were held tomorrow and 99% of Americans voted to legitimize homosexual “marriage,” that still would not make it moral. Morality is defined by God and communicated through his Word. Men may scorn it and reject it, thinking themselves to be oh, so enlightened, but in the end all will be held to account on a day of judgment and none will escape. Scoff and mock if you will, but in the end God will have the last word.

Well, at least it is now clear (a) that the McCain campaign did indeed undermine Sarah Palin frequently, (b) why they did so, (c) and why the lies told about her afterward were often so sleazy and filled with sexual innuendo. It’s also clear why Palin is not working with mainstream Republicans as she investigates the possibility of a run in 2012.

McCain can suggest anything he wants the Republican
party to embrace. The Republican party & Democrat party have both moved too far away from the Constitution to ever warrant a vote from me again.
The party or person that is the closest to the Constitution will get my votes and support, and I’m pretty sure that a few others are inclined to think this way, since the truth is finally getting out to the multitudes. You can’t fool all the people all of the time.

McCain needs to retire. Better yet the people ned to make the mandatory
retirement age for ALL senators and reps 50 years of age. It would be cheaper and less damaging to the country to get these doddering old fools out of power.

Funny how Republicans CLAIM to be all about INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY and personal freedoms, yet their party is ALL ABOUT preventing OTHER individuals from living as they so desire.
The GOP is the party of nosey neighbors, meddling into the most personal aspects of everyone elses lives. If you ever watched Bewitched, Gladys Kravitz is a great metaphor for todays GOPer for sure!
The GOP is hell bent on BANNING OTHERS from doing ANYTHING they deem immoral!
How does telling OTHERS who to marry, telling OTHERS they can’t have a dr. assisted suicide, telling OTHERS they can’t consume marijuana etc. amount to being supportive of individual liberty and freedom?
The GOP claims to be the party that wants “government out of our lives”?
Hardly!
More like the party that wants government control, restrictions and oversight on even the most private, intimate and personal aspects of our lives!
It’s GOP religious nutters like Rick Santorum who have publicly argued that Americans have NO constitutional right to privacy and shouldn’t expect it!
When the GOP stops being the party of “BAN IT, BAN IT” on everything under the sun, from entertainment
to gay marriage, maybe THEN I’ll reconsider them as a viable alternative once again.
Until then, they are just the U.S. version of the TaliBAN, out to BAN OTHERS from doing ALL THINGS they deem offensive!
Here’s an idea. Stop worrying about how OTHERS are living THEIR lives, and focus on your own? Better yet, how’s about focusing on writing legislation which actually BENEFITS ALL PEOPLE in their day to day lives in areas such as health care and retirement.
GOP PARTY PLATFORM POSITIONS:
Gay Marriage-BAN IT
Stem Cell Research-BAN IT
Medical Marijuana-BAN IT
Buying RX’s From Other Countries-BAN IT
Dr. Assisted Suicide-BAN IT
Adult Content In Media-BAN IT
Abortion-BAN IT
That’s just off the top of my head. I’m sure I’ve forgotten a few things.
Does the GOP even try to come up with even a slightly intellectual position on anything anymore or does it just reactionarily default to “BAN IT” when presented with any new developments?
GOP = U.S. Tali”BAN IT”

Gays are 10% of the population BS!!!! The pervert orgs all funded a 5 years study and THEY concluded that 1.75 – 2.4% are homos.
Your facts seem to keep expanded, just like AIDS. I’m sure HIV is a hetrosexual disease……NOT, it’s a pervert disease spread by perverts. Hey say it like it is, just the facts.

Dear BBub,
Whether gays are 10, 5 or even 1% of the U.S. population does not matter.
Counting ALL JEWS, even secular Jews, Jews ammount to only 2% of the U.S. population. Mormons only make up 1.7% of the U.S. and Muslims only make up .5, yes that’s POINT 5 PERCENT of the U.S. population. Asians, EVEN IF you count all of them collectively, from every Asian country, still only make up 5% of the U.S..
So. Even by the LOWEST estimations, there are at least as many gays in America as there are Jews, and many more gays than Mormons or Muslims.
Would you suggest that Jews or Mormons or Muslims or Asians are not entitled to demand what they feel are THEIR rites in light of how few there are?
The Constitution protects ALL INDIVIDUALS, not just those who are part of a group that has reached some critical mass. Remember, even 2% of over 300 million people is A LOT of folks!
Also remember that a lot more people are willing to reveal their ethnic or religious affiliation than their sexual orientation, as most gays are still closeted. Just something to think about.

You people want to say we spread diseases. Well if that where true you would be dead. Bi-sexuals have been around for years. You people appear to be healthy too.

Gay marriage/Sodomism is just WRONG! And its sick! I’m a Rep. & I don’t support it cause its unnatural. Read your biology homework. “Survival of the Fitess” doesn’t include them. Using God as a reference not to support gay marriage is just a poor explanation. This is why I use facts from research so they can keep thier mouths shut!
All hope for humanity will be lost if Sodomism/GLBT culture is seen as normal. I especially fear (confused) straight women turning lesbians because of the lies the lesbians/sodomism they spread. And if they succeed, there will be no REAL men left in this world to give a woman what see wants. Trust me, anything a butch/dyke can do, a REAL man can do better! I’m all for reformation, but not for the gay culture cause its just sick!
Don’t support gay marriage & gay culture if you really care about humanity!
