Meghan McCain: ‘Old School Republicans’ Are ‘Scared S**tless’ of the Future
ABC News’ Teddy Davis reports: Meghan McCain (left) was applauded by Len Olds of the Liberty Education Forum (right) during a speech to the Log Cabin Republicans, a gay rights group, in Washington, D.C., April 18, 2009.
Ferdous Al-Faruque/ ABC News John McCain’s 24-year old daughter told the Log Cabin Republicans on Saturday that "old school Republicans" are "scared s**tless" of the future in a speech calling for a new brand of Republicanism. "I think we’re seeing a war brewing in the Republican Party," said Meghan McCain. "But it is not between us and Democrats. It is not between us and liberals. It is between the future and the past." She summed up what she learned while campaigning for her father in three points: "(1) Most of our nation wants our nation to succeed; (2) most people are ready to move on to the future, not live in the past; and (3) most of the old school Republicans are scared shitless of that future." McCain described her politics as being "faithful to the original core values of the GOP while open to the realities of our changing world." Without ever explicitly discussing her support for gay marriage, she signaled her affinity with the gay rights group by stating her support for people living "in full equality with each other." McCain, who recently signed a book deal with Hyperion, told the Log Cabin Republicans that she was proud to join them in "challenging the mold and the notions of what being a Republican means." To signal her brand of New Age Republicanism, she interspersed references to her tattoo, black clothing, and gay friends in a section of her speech that was otherwise devoted to her political priorities. "I am concerned about the environment. I love to wear black. I think government is best when it stays out of people’s lives and business as much as possible. I love punk rock. I believe in a strong national defense. I have a tattoo. I believe government should always be efficient and accountable. I have lots of gay friends. And yes, I am a Republican," she said to wild applause. To read Meghan McCain’s entire speech click here. ABC News’ Ferdous Al-Faruque contributed to this report.

Navy SEAL Commander Advised: Get the Hell Out of the Media
Meghan- Glad someone can stand up and speak the truth- I am an independent- I did not vote for McCain or Obama , but if Repubs want my vote and many independents like myself in the future they must get themselves together – its ok to have more than one leader and I am not including Rush- get a leader maybe even Palin that has some of the Obama charm and strong ideas- like less government- no more bailouts etc- stop the debt- healthcare for all but NOT socialized healthcare where the govt tells us what our treatment and medcine will be

Meghan who? Her only claim to fame is who her father is, which is not saying much since he picked some nobody from Alaska as his running mate. No one would ever have heard of Palin in the lower 48 if he hadn’t been dumb enough to pick her.

I’m not a Republican anymore, but I not afraid of anything on this earth, especial some dyke. Just remember hatchling of McPink, Republicans like me voted for Obama rather than support your father. The Republican party can be the same as the liberal Dem’s, We will start our own Ron Paul party, we sure stuck it to your dad, and I loved paying back the Republican party for eight years of Bush.

Republicans are the most frustrated Americans right now because all of the polls suggest that a majority of Americans support president Obama on most of his policies. Obama is doing a great job and the Republicans don’t know which way to turn..I AM LOVING IT! Ha Ha..after the Republicans have destroyed our country for eight years..Obama is a breath of fresh air

That means you are just as responsible for everything he does that hurts this country. We Republicans lost an election, not our minds and not our core values!
A marriage is between a man and a woman!
It is evil to kill an unborn child!
Capitalism is still the best economic system!
You earn a day’s pay for a day’s work!
Without a strong military, everything else is moot!
The Republican Party stands for these values.

Really? Ron Paul? Ron Paul is a bigot. Ron Paul is an anti-semite. Ron Paul’s idea of monetary policy is to make new money. If Ron Paul is the answer, you’re asking the wrong questions. Meghan’s speech is interesting when juxtaposed with Steve Schmidt’s speech. It shows me that maybe the Republicans weren’t so anti-gay as they made themselves out to be.
Of course, they were also to spineless to say they weren’t anti-gay, so they let the Palin-Huckabee-Jindal-Limbaugh wing of the party continue to demonize Americans in the pursuit of votes.
Posted by: Really? | April 19, 2009, 1:55 am 1:55 am
Once again this proves that the quickest way for a republican to gain attention in the media is to criticize the republican party. Many have found this before including Colin Powell. Meghan don’t be deceived, they love for the moment and drop you like a hot potato later. Surely the must be something you agree on which you agree with the republicans… just try to trot that out and see the reception you get from your new friends.

Say what you want about Meghan McCain, but she does make sense. All the GOP is doing right now with comments from Perry and uneductated statements from most of the party,is slowly destroying themselves. This young woman speaks the truth when she says the Republican Party needs to walk into the future instead of being dragged into it. Like ir or not, the people of America have spoken, and they elected an intelligent, vibrant man to lead your country back from the brink of disaster. The entire world is changing and the USA needs to step up to the plate and lead as it has always done. The ones who talk about leaving the union and saying no to the stimulus package need to get off their “OLD FANNIES” and move forward. It was okay to spend like a bunch of drunken sailors while GW was in but now that Obama is trying to help Americans, they scream and holler. WHat a bunch of hypocrits. Get with the show and do what you were elected to do. There are Americans suffering badly right now. Or have you forgotten about the very people who elected you.

I still haven’t figured out how Gay’s are “discriminated against” and how does two gay men getting married actually benefit society? There is 0% chance of them EVER having a kid together so it’s all for show and liberals making themselves feel better about themselves into tricking themselves that they are better than everyone because they are so “open minded” about a lack of morals. Gays can marry too they just choose not to. Also, why is it alright to hate bash and hate Catholics but it’s not alright to hate and bash homosexuality? Also, McCain wasn’t a leader and should of never got the presidential nomination and this shows why, also notice how the media loves Meghan like they used to love her dad……..hmmm I wonder why???? Couldn’t be because she’s a liberal posing as a republican and the media loves it!

Apart from being the daughter of a Presidential candidate who ran one of the horrible campaign in presidential elections and who get whipped and thrashed badly by Obama, what political credentials does Megan McCain have to comment on party direction? She is clueless dumb blond and better to leave actual policies to experts who know what is going on.
Posted by: Gregh | April 19, 2009, 4:19 am 4:19 am
I’m totally fine with the Republican Party brushing Meghan McCain off as just a daughter of a politician. She sees something most Republicans don’t, and that’s that times are changing whether they’re on board or not.
So, Republicans, ignore Meghan McCain and you will go the way of the dinosaurs.
Just listen to Bob Dylan sing “Times They Are A Changin’.” Hopefully for you, you’ll figure out what you need to do to stay relevant and survive. If not, bye-bye!! And good riddance.
I guess a good analogy would be that the Democrats are the Internet and Republicans are daily metro newspapers. Know what I mean?

I am a strong Democrat. But, believe that in order to have a good free America, we have to have a strong two party system which we do not have at the moment.
In order for the Republicans to rebound, they must listen to the younger group like McCain. If they continue to listen to Boehmer, Rush, Hannity, Coulter, Laura and the like, we will continue to have only one party in full power.

The party that adopts the 30% of Americans who were thrown away after outsourcing can win. The party that can empty the prisons of drug crimes, and replace them with murderers, rapist, and violent scum, will win. The throw-away Americans are looking for a viable party, and the Party that adopts them can possibly end the spiral of this countries death, if that is still possible at this late date. Legalize drugs, and shut down the gulags.

The republicans should lead all government in getting out of the marriage business. Marriage, as far as the government is concerned, should be an incorporation, with fees for incorporating, and fees for ending the corporation. The only thing government should regulate, is that a blood test or DNA test should prevent inbreeding. You can’t incorporate incest. After that, marriage is a simple religious ceremony. If your religion allows homosexuality, or beastiality, than you can marry any human or animal you want, as long as you pay the incorporation fees.

If you legalize drugs, we can move the product to the liquor stores, and the same people who are buying drugs on the street will be the same people buying drugs at the store. Alcohol and tobacco kill more people every month, but none of them go to prison because they are not part of the throw-away Americans.
Posted by: Mr. Sampson | April 19, 2009, 7:15 am 7:15 am
Prohibition should include food, so fat people should go to prison for gluttony. The Republicans ending the gulags and legalizing drugs like Roosevelt did with alcohol in 1933, would be a watershed moment in history. Why should the mob control drugs, when the government can do a better job.

All you have to do is read the comments by republicans on this thread, to see that she is telling the truth. This young women has hit the nail on the head with this one. Republicans are STILL running around talking about things that happened in the 50′s and they ALWAYS bring up Ronald Reagan. I have news for you republicans…..
REAGAN IS DEAD !!!!!!!!!
….and so is your party if you don’t stop bringing up these lame issues like the President’s birth certificate and these silly “tea parties”. I can see the division personally among the Republicans in my own family. Those over 60 are still talking about Reagan and calling Obama names……and those under 60, while they don’t agree with everything the President does, are looking for VALID alternatives to some of his policies.
So Ms. McCain is exactly right on this one. The old guard Republicans are scared to death of looking ahead, and the proof is in how often they bring up the past.

This is such a sad way of getting attention. This is a very selfish act a cheap way of earning fame. I hope the press will find her to be nothing to talk about shortly. She is a very poor example for future generations. We need to give women of postive attitudes the 15 minutes of fame. We all fell together, so we should all rise together. We need to remember that Obama is not the one that created the mess, he is the clean up man. He is actually working and not just collecting a check. Let’s focus on what’s going to bring back the power in the word “America”, which was once the most respectable country no matter where you stood in the world, let’s show the rest of the world “United” we stand.

Proposing NEW debt that will make going to the doctor for medical care a nightmare, chumming up to our sworn (by their choice) enemies, telling the world we are no longer a Christian nation, etc.etc.etc. The Republican party would be fine if they would go back to being THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. Who the old guard she refers to; I don’t have a clue but she could take a stand and be clear in whatever it is she believes in. In other words, don’t beat around the bush, quit talking in riddles.
As for tea parties. Those who participated did so at their own expense and time. Most of us see how bailouts have added a burden onto generations of Americans well into the future. Taking money from the earners, giving it to poorly run companies for them to loan it back to us somehow doesn’t make sense.
Don’t try to make the protest seem to be leveled at one person, Tony. We have a Congress that is suppose to look out for our interest, this means being prudent in what they spend, how they spend it and more importantly read the bills before they approve them. If you will take off the blinders, look at the key players in this mess you’ll find some interesting names….they ain’t all republicans.

Define smaller government. Does that include downsizing the Department of Defense? Does it include cutting the budgets of CIA, NSA, FBI, Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Commerce? These are the big costs in the budget (ok much of the CIA and NSA are not published in the budget). They are necessary, but they are huge contributors to government spending.
The truth is that we need bigger government to protect us from Big Corporations (so long as we do not repeat the mistake of electing a corporate tool like Bush). Note also that conservatives are not so big on getting off the backs of sexters, nudists, gays, and others whose life style does not match theirs own.

My admiration for Thomas Jefferson is equal to that of any person. Yet, he wrote words held by many to be sacroscant, yet more inaccurate that any others with which I am familiar. “All (men) are created equal.” Taken literally, it is self-evident that such is far from true. No two are equal in talent, inheritance, ambition, character, physical or mental capability, or any other inherent quality for contributing to their own well-being or that of their fellows.
Yet words on the Supreme Court building promising “Equal Justice for All Under Law” are the most important ever written. The words extolling democracy from Churchill on to Feinstein’s at the Obama inauguration are equally flawed. What protects a minority in a system where the majority rules? What separates such a system from mob rule. Pelosi’s remark that “we won”, implying that to the victors belong the spoils, reveals the fallacy of democracy. We must adhere to the rule of law, constitutional republicianism, not rule by the whim of the majority. If the new GOP can adhere to these principles, it will attract the minorities necessary to prevail in a diverse land such as this. Megan’s speech to the Log Cabin Society representing such a group is a welcome start. Go girl !

I seldom read comments, and rarely add my thoughts, because they are usually like cat and dog fights and mostly just show the ignorance of people.
I don’t think the average person can be characterized by a label like liberal or conservative, I know I can’t. When I go to vote, I vote for who I believe to be the best person for the job at that point in time. Sadly, many times there is no best person and I end up voting for who I believe to be the lesser of two evils.
I think both parties have reached the point that nobody in Washington (or State and Local) cares about the average person until just before election time and as soon as that is past, they go back to their version of a cat and dog fight and at the same time feathering their own nest to the detriment of the average person.
Until the average person wakes up and gets involved and we throw every single professional politician out and replace them with average citizens, we deserve the chaos and pillage that we have.
We have a better system than most of the world but it’s far from perfect or even a good system. Maybe it will take a real revolution to achieve that?
Oh, and I’ll be 67 next month so I think I’ve been around long enough to have some insight.

To Herbert Hoover (the one posting a view of marriage above); why should marriage of any type have a standing in law? If all are to be equal under law, than why should this religious ceremony confer better tax status, for example? To those who want to preserve the “sanctity of marriage” I say, get government out of marriage. Let there be no “authority in me vested by the state”. Your church can then determine what is marriage, not the politicians. Let not rights to estates, division of assets, and all the laws based on marriage be denied to any who have not entered into this state recognized religous institution. Simply put, separate church and state.

By the way, kid, stick around til you’re my age. And stay involved in my fight for equality for all under law.
So where is it written that government should be more that a set of rules and the enforcement of same, equally, upon us all?

The first Republican I’ve heard so far to make any sense at all. She is right on…if the Republicans want a future at all, they best listen to her and not Limbaugh!

Glad to see one Republican has finally awakened to reality. Oops! I guess it should be two, since Steve Schmidt is coming around.

The only reason homosexuals want marriage rights, is because they want the legal protections. They don’t really care about the religious ceremony, which they can do now. My suggestion earlier was to redefine marriage laws. To get the states out of the marriage business. If a couple or group marriage wants some legal protection, they can form a corporation. That way, if the union fails, they can disolve the corporation and split any profits. We can get the states out of the divorce business, alimony, and child support business, and the corporate law shall prevail.
Marriage is just a religious ceremony at that point. Legal protections become something you invest in.

Meghan who? Jeez, if she’s anything like that wretched Ted Kennedy butt-kissing old coot dad of hers then anything she says is just plain BS.
Face it, the shadow government infested these parties decades ago and have been calling the shots all along. Cap’n Kenya and that nitwit Bush are just puppets for the NWO. They don’t work for us. see: http://tinyurl.com/ObamaDeceptionHD
Ron Paul is the only hope for the sorry GOP.

Tom Bebe
”
Wayne T; who was it among the founding fathers that spoke of “citizen” (not professional) leaders?
By the way, kid, stick around til you’re my age. And stay involved in my fight for equality for all under law.
So where is it written that government should be more that a set of rules and the enforcement of same, equally, upon us all?”
I don’t know that any Founding Father spoke out on the issue of citizens vs professional politicians but then I wouldn’t have expected them to since most were somewhat wealthy and many were slave owners.
However, just because they didn’t address the issue does not mean it is not a better idea. Even the Catholic religion and it’s “governing body” has changed and evolved over the years as new information and new ideas have clashed with it so why should our form of government not change to address the problems and the times?
The Founding Fathers did address equality of all men but then they only paid lip service to that “equality” just as our present government does. You can easily see how “equal” people are when you look at the laws and the tax codes. Money and other perks to the professional politicians will get you the laws and tax codes that oppress the majority and enrich the strong and wealthy.

If you legalize drugs, and empty the prisons of drug crimes (which should be a traffic fine at most) participants, then you will cut taxes. Cutting taxes is a Republican agenda. Without drug crimes, detectives will have to solve real crimes like murder and rape. We won’t need private Armies (swat people) with machine guns and grenade launchers, and armored vehicles). We will cut taxes, and police departments will go after violent murderes, violent robbers, and violent rapists. See the pluses already?

“how does two gay men getting married actually benefit society?”
Why does it need to benefit society, or ANYONE else for that matter? Fortunately for most of us, we don’t live in a Communist state in which all of our personal choices must have some kind of broad, utilitarian effect on society. The nice thing about a country like ours is that we value personal liberty, and we value the right to do what we want so long as it doesn’t directly and tangibly harm others.
Social “conservative” Republicans are a very odd bunch. They subscribe to this libertarian ideology when it comes to gun rights and economic freedom (at least in theory. Some are a bit confused here too). Yet they completely abandon the concept of personal liberty when it comes to one’s personal decision to form romantic relationships with someone of his or her same sex. Conveniently, marriage manages to be an issue where social benefits trump personal choice. God forbid someone marry without the intention or ability to procreate with their partner. According to the social conservative, they should only choose to marry someone with whom they can reproduce and subsequently create more future tax payers to feed our hungry socialist, nanny state.

The “War on Drugs” has been a back-burner issue for a long time now. It’s a joke. People are going to use drugs, legal or not. There is a TON of money going out of the country because of drug laws. And not just out of the country, but to wicked, vicious cartels. Legalize and tax. Start with pot and see how that shakes out. I’m not sure I’m on board with the legalization of narcotics yet, but it should at least be on the table for discussion.

Megan McWho? Oh, the clueless dumb blonde daughter of a brain dead senile senator.
That’s certainly someone I want to listen too, and maybe buy her book.
Not.

Wow, she’ll do just about anything to get a date! I’m an Independent and wouldn’t vote for anyone who supports gay marriage or any further protection for gays. There are plenty of laws on the books already that protect us all equally. There might be 2 politicians left who are worthy of any vote and they are not in the Democratic Party! The problem is, we really only have one party, they all look the same anymore! As for Meghan, go find something really worthwhile to do! Make your spoiled self useful!
