Meghan McCain’s Log Cabin Manifesto
Meghan McCain put a hipster’s twist on McCain-style straight talk at a gathering of Log Cabin Republicans last night.
" I am proud to join you in challenging the mold and the notions of what being a Republican means. I am concerned about the environment. I love to wear black. I think government is best when it stays out of people’s lives and business as much as possible. I love punk rock. I believe in a strong national defense. I have a tattoo. I believe government should always be efficient and accountable. I have lots of gay friends. And yes, I am a Republican," she said.
Will her ideas get any traction? Or one-night wonder?

Dear Meghan,
Those are all Democratic core values.
The only one you are missing is the ‘we are all in this together’ ethic, because it matters if people lose their health insurance when they get laid off.
It matters if someone has to give up their health insurance because they can’t afford their Cobra (when you pay out of pocket for the insurance you had before you were laid off).
It matters that most hospitals in America will DENY you treatment for your cancer unless you can prove up front that you have the cash to pay.
People shouldn’t have to go bankrupt to stay alive. People shouldn’t have to die without treatment because they don’t have health insurance. But they do. Every day.

There are planty of people like her in the GOP. The problem is they aren’t listened to or marginalized just like the Log Cabins. Now if she had said “and I think Rush is an idiot…” you might have a story there.

were it not for her father ..,, where will this girl (MM) be today? I believe she is a Lesbian because at her age and given the fact she has no known boy friend, she seems to be promoting the gay/lesbian thing in any given opportunity, to become part of the republican agenda, before she comes out in the open to say she is one. Meghan should join the dems ASAP. Its her right.

Yeah, Meghan, it’s pretty “hip” to be in the party that supports: torture, bigotry, jingoism, illegal wars, laughable tea parties, and the upper 1% at the expense of the remaining 99%. Yeah, that’s pretty “hip” stuff.
Meghan, if you actually think you’re “hip”, then you’re more clueless than we previously thought. There never has been and there never will be anything cool about being a Republican.

The real difference between Republicans and Democrats is that Democrats believe that the government can do good things, and the Republicans believe it cannot.
The rest of this stuff is just personal opinion on how to live your life — punk rock, block clothes, tatoos and who your friends are have no bearing on your partisan leanings.
But when she says government is best that stays out of lives she means doesn’t tax her to help other people. THAT is what Republicans mean by that, not that it doesn’t spy on you or arrest other citizens without charge or force protesters into a pen while letting supporters of the President walk free.
Democrats want tight, efficient and accountable government and unlike Republicans they deliver it. The VA was a mess under Reagan and Bush, became world class under Clinton, then went to crap under Bush II. The deficit exploded under Reagan and Bush, shrunk under Clinton, then exploded again under Bush II. The post office almost went out of business under Reagan and Bush, then got innovative under Clinton, and now is almost dead again. Regulation of the markets under Reagan and Bush was so lax we had the Savings and Loan Crisis, then under Clinton we had amazing growth, then under Bush we have the worst collapse since Hoover.
The difference, as noted above, is that Democrats believe government CAN BE effective, efficient and accountable so we work to make that happen. Republicans don’t believe it CAN be effective, efficient and accountable so they don’t even try.

If only the GOP could turn back toward the center and away from the religious nut jobs who have hijacked the ship. If only they could get all the way back to pre-Reagan. He was the one who dumped the environment as a concern.
1- Teddy Roosevelt started the National Park system to protect Yellowstone
2- Richard Nixon, although a moral mentor for the likes of “W”, DID start the Environmental Protection Agency!

I can appreciate your gay stance, but I personally disagree with what you expect the rest of us to give you. That being full acceptance to our rights as straight people. Why is ‘Civil Unions’ not acceptable to you? Why is “Don’t Tell” in the military not acceptable? Yes, since I can’t fully accept your living style, just the image of your bedroom habits make me throw up. But – that’s me! What I’m willing to live with (not accept) is Unions. I do know gay people and I like most of them – those that don’t accentuate their gay style. But those real fruity ones – I just can’t be around. I can live with some of my friends that are gay – they know I like them and would help them in many ways. But they are not pushy or fruity. They are nice guys and girls, that happen to live together. Yes, those deserve rights, I agree. But the others – I just can not (I don’t know the word) stand.

They are really grasping at anything, trying to find an identity that America isn’t disgusted with and appalled by. I hope they do, I think a multi-party system is the best thing possible when the parties engage in the exchange of healthy thought and debate based in and a shared, respectful sense of responsibility for our country and its people. Somehow, though, I don’t think Meagan McCain is a person who will be a uniting influence for the Republicans.

McCain you LOST, the Republicans don’t want you or your hatchlings. WE want Ron Paul, and will start a new party. the only reason Obama was elected was white people like me who hated Bush so much that we voted for Obama. There will be a third party run and Obama will lose in 2012.

Maxy : You are an intellectual dullard and should probably stick to swilling beer at the local dive rather than offering up policy options on this forum.
Just because the sex practices of other people “make you throw up” and you don’t like “fruity” gays – doesn’t mean that you can impose your personal comfort zone overtop the rights of other individuals to be entitled to the same social institutions that benefit you.
Gays and Lesbians should not have to live their lives in segregation or shame, whatsoever. I’m completely straight, for the record, but this type of talk that you’re exemplifying is exactly what is wrong with your country.

sonyks,
Republican much? Your comments are the epitome of what is wrong with the modern Republican party. If someone dares to cross the core extremist ideology you immediately try to belittle them as unworthy because they are too liberal, or even worse, possibly a degenerate homosexual (gasp). Thanks for your unintentional and graphic reminder of why the Republican party will never again represent the mainstream until it loses it’s bigoted and intolerant ideals.

I am BEGGING for Meghan McCain and others like her in the Republican party to name me THREE (3) specific issues that they disagee with the Democrats on that are in agreement with what the Republican party stands for.
“Glittering Generalities” like “a stong national defense” “efficient and accountable government”, and “minimal intrusions in peoples’ lives” don’t count (Democrats claim that, too). Her father’s campign was lacking specifics on isses, as well, and it got smoked last November.
Meghan is so fast to slam Republicans on specific issues, but I am still waiting for her to do the same level of bashing of Democrats on specifics, as well. If she doesn’t, some things abiout her are going to become self evident very fast…….

The Republican party needs to stop trying to win members by producing ‘attractive’ females who may say what most members believe. The whole party needs a shake down and will not hold office anytime soon.

Her and her father need to be listened to. We are all caught up in this “conservative movement” which is going to do nothing but lose us the election in 2012 because the base wants to see Palin elected.

All of her ideas are good but the hard right is why I left the Republican party a long time ago. The conservative right are so out of touch with the American people. Her views are the same as the Conservative dems, like me. Her ideas would be good for us on the left who care about people but also care about money issues!

Those that don’t like gay people to marrying say that the definition of words like marriage are set in stone and should not change.
I remember that the definition of gay had to do with the condition of an animated happiness. If it is unacceptable to anti-gay-marriage people for words to change over time then they must really must have a problem with people exhibiting animated happiness marrying.
Posted by: Kenneth | April 20, 2009, 12:01 am 12:01 am
I am a registered Democrat, but always vote Republican. I am not against gays, just marriage. They can have a legal union with the same benefits as marriage. I hate tattoos, but others can have them. I believe in a strong military. I believe the government should not control everything in my life. I taking this country in the wrong direction. I feel they should concentrate on fixing what caused all this financial mess we are in and let the stock markets, banks, and businesses recover on their own. Interest rates are too low for too long and this is part of the problem. Prices for homes rose as the interest rates fell. Lenders loosened up credit and allowed people to purchase homes who could not afford them. We would be healthier if home interest rates were about 6 to 8%. This would allow CD rates to rise to a decent rate. The retired person has really suffered. We must pay taxes, but the more taxes individuals pay the less they have to spend on things that would fuel the economy. I find it appalling that a family of 4 that makes $35,000 does not pay any taxes and receives a check from the government. Everyone should pay something or at least zero out and not receive the darn check; I consider that welfare. Nothing makes good sense! Obama appears to hate the wealthy. Well, who invests in businesses and creates jobs? You take most of their money and you will see less jobs for the poorer people. Do you really want most of the people in this country living off the government? How healthy is that for the individual? It creates poor esteem and crime. People in this counrty better wake up before they lose most of their freedoms. The working people will resent those who live off the government and no telling what will happen in the future.

Ya, Meghan McCain, I have gay friends too. It doesn’t mean I need to be afraid of realizing that homosexuality is a behavior not a race, etc. I still don’t believe in redefining marriage just because two people of the same sex are in love. What about THREE people in love? In my opinion strong marriages are the foundation for a civil society. Let’s not keep weakening the family. It’s already bad enough.

I love how you people make the GOP out to be these racist idiots. Do you even know the history of your precious Democrat party? They were pro-slavery, war mongers during the civil war and even ran on “It’s a white man’s country!” as their campaign slogan during the late 1800′s. Abraham Lincoln and MLK were both Republicans. You people are ignorant and should one day google Democrat History and read up on your history.

Meghan is right on. There is nothing at all wrong with most of the traditional thinking of the GOP. Taxes, less government, etc. Although I do disagree with their emphasis on making the rich richer. They are in trouble because of the far right members of the party that they are trying to appease. I believe that people should follow their conscience when they make life decisions; but, when you start mixing religion and politics it causes the lack of credibility that the Republican party now faces. There is an old saying, “you are known by the people you keep.” Unfortunately the GOP is catering to the far, far right when most of us are right down the middle.
