More Biden Fallout: Napolitano Explains, Harkin Scolds

ABC News’ David Chalian and Karen Travers report:

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano offered this explanation of Vice President Biden’s remarks this morning that Americans should avoid subways or commercial flights because of the flu.

"I think the vice president if he had, if he could say that over again he would say if they’re feeling sick they should stay off of public transit or confined spaces because that is indeed the advice that we’re giving," Napolitano said on MSNBC.

On Radio Iowa this morning, Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, was less forgiving.

"Well, I think that’s a very unfortunate statement by the vice president. We just don’t need that type of misinformation going out. I wish the vice president had checked with the center for disease control and preparedness before he made that statement," said Harkin. "As far as not riding on subways or planes, we’re not going to shut down our system and that doesn’t get to the nub of the problem anyway, so I think that’s very unfortunate that this kind of misinformation got out."

It’s Joe Biden, for crying out loud. No one takes him seriously.
Give the guy a break.

If the swine flu affects Homeland Security, as evidenced by Napolitano being the spokesperson, why haven’t we closed the borders and limited travel?
Joe said what everyone is thinking. He, mostly humorously, doesn’t have a filter. I can’t believe I am defending Biden, who I think is a complete nutcase, but even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

Wow. Joe Biden does such a bad job communicating they have Napolitano trying to clear it up. A true comedy of errors.

Would be nice if we could all backtrack and erase things we’ve said. Napolitano says they didn’t “mean” the vets-can-be-terrorists memo, they’re switching “passive surveillance” to something else. Now a pull back on Biden; “What he meant to say was…”
How many chances are these people going to get before someone asks a real question?

“Miscommunication?” How was it a miscommunication? He was asked a question about his own family.

Biden is right on this one. If there is a flu or bug going around that is airborne the LAST place you want to be is on a plane. I’ll admit this was a gaffe if we accept the definition of a gaffe as being when a politician accidentally tells the truth.

“Misinformation”? This was on Reuters today:
“Mexican President Felipe Calderon told his people to stay home Friday for a five-day partial shutdown of the economy, after the World Health Organization said a swine flu pandemic was imminent.
Calderon ordered government offices and private businesses not crucial to the economy to stop work to avoid further infections from the new virus, which has killed up to 176 people in Mexico and is now spreading around the world.
‘There is no safer place than your own home to avoid being infected with the flu virus,’ he said in his first televised address since the crisis erupted last week.”
Joe was right. With the borders wide open, Harken, Napolitano and Obama are wrong.

Concerned:”even a stopped clock is right twice a day.”
On that note, I think it should be pointed out both Dr. Ron Paul and the Obama Administration agree on the current cautious-but-not-panicked response (although I’m sure they’re at loggerheads over the ‘just in case’ $1.5 billion request).

Just think. This MORON is in charge of implementing the $800 Billion stimulus which will save our economy!
Vice President Joe Biden said Thursday that he would not recommend taking any commercial flight or riding in a subway car “at this point” because swine flu virus can spread “in confined places.” A little more than one hour later, BIDEN RUSHED OUT A STATEMENT BACKING OFF.
“I would tell members of my family — and I have — I wouldn’t go anywhere in confined places now,” Biden said on NBC’s “Today” show. “It’s not that it’s going to Mexico. It’s [that] you’re in a confined aircraft. When one person sneezes, it goes all the way through the aircraft. That’s me.

The International Monetary Fund looks at Mr. Obama’s program, and reports:
“On April 21, the IMF issued an updated World Economic Outlook which predicted negative growth for the world in 2009 and a modest recovery beginning in 2010.
“But their forecast for the United States was not so positive. They predicted that the United States economy will have zero growth in 2010, despite President Obama’s stimulus package. In fact, they predicted that U.S. unemployment will climb, that year, to 10.1%.
“The IMF also estimated that American foreign debt is now in the process of doubling from 4.5% of world GDP in 2007 to 9% of world GDP in 2009, and they saw a pretty good chance that the continuing U.S. trade deficits would cause a dollar collapse.”

I see you’re another zealot arguing confidently from a position of ignorance. The stimulus included $237 billion in tax cuts. The second largest chunk of that – the AMT tax cut – is a perennial Republican priority and accounts for almost 10% of the total bill cost and ONLY goes to middle class or higher earners.

The AMT fix is just that–A FIX, which should have been done long ago. It has nothing to do with the stimulus. It is a correction to the tax code for inflation driven tax increases–against the middle class–that were never intended in the first place. It is a correction of a mistake.

All passengers from mexico should be screened by a doctor.
Napalitano is only allowing passive screening without checks from a doctor. It is basically nothing border agents are letting people through by asking how are you at select airports.
You could stop all flights from mexico giving u.s citizens a week to return by plane. You could stop tourists from mexico flying here.
The middle approach would be to at least screen all passengers with doctors when they land in the u.s. It would stop all the sick people from then spreading but it is better than what we are doing now.
As for biden he has dementia.
Last year Biden called Palin the lt governor. I am no fan of Palin but I thought Biden sounded out of it when he called her the lt governor.
Biden also last year said FDR was giving updates on television.
Obama got no flack from picking Biden even though Biden would be a disaster as president.

Napalitano is doing a horrific job.
Napalitano is refusing texas and arizona’s requests for 1,000 national guard troops to help out at the border.
Napalitano cancelled a raid at a military production plant where 100 illegals were working.
Napalitano instead of deporting illegals picked up in another raid at a work site released them back to work.
Napalitano won’t even allow doctors to screen passengers from mexico. Instead she has this passive screening which is nothing.
Thank god we don’t have a real epic pandemic because millions would be dying and Napalitano would still be PC and not cancel flights and not close the border.
Napalitano vetoed every bill in arizona that did anything to hurt the cause of illegals.

Posted by: Dan | April 30, 2009, 12:59 pm 12:59 pm

Obama during the campaign last year said ICE agents who arrested illegals in raids were terrorizing illegals.
America wanted change and you got change all right.
Obama’s homeland security pick Napalitano won’t allow national guard at the border even though border governors from arizona and texas have asked for them.
Napalitan cancelled an ICE raid against the border.
But policies don’t count in this country.
All that counts is that Americans like Obama even though his policies suck.
And all this liking Obama. Remember when Obama wouldn’t even sign an autograph for that guy who was begging him for one and he got so arrogant about it. This is a guy who never served his country in uniform and walks around like a king.
Obama and Clinton want in state tuition for illegals.
Obama and Clinton want affirmative action for illegals over caucasian american citizens.

They tell us not to go to Mexico but at the same time, they have no problem at all if Mexico comes to us! Insane.

Joe Biden has the courage to speak the truth in a city that thrives on lies and half truths and his comments place the good of public health over the political correctness that we are so crazy about. We currently don’t have a handle on the spread of the flu and we don’t have any idea of some serious illnesses that may have gone unreported. All the politicians have all of sudden become public health experts from the President down to the reporters who do not have any formal training in public health or Virology. No one seems to want to make any hard decisions like Time out for two days. Let us stem the tide of increasing states and increasing number of cases by taking certain steps. Very soon the President and the CDC are going to be irrelevant on the flu issue because they are letting infected people into the country and not setting up quarantine units at ports of entry or border points. Sanitizing public places in those two days would be an added advantage. Luckily the virus has caused mild infection in the US other than the single child arriving from Mexico and the Tamiflu seems to be working but don’t count on the luck to last more deaths will be seen if a thousand people are reported infected and the virus could mutate into a more virulent and a resistant stage and that will be the crisis we are definitely not prepared for. A stitch in time saves nine says it all, nip this current outbreak in the bud or face a calamity far greater than 911.

In fact, the current outbreak of the H1N1 virus, which emerged in San Diego and southern Mexico late last month, may not even do as much damage as the run-of-the-mill flu outbreaks that occur each winter without much fanfare.
“Let’s not lose track of the fact that the normal seasonal influenza is a huge public health problem that kills tens of thousands of people in the U.S. alone and hundreds of thousands around the world,” said Dr. Christopher Olsen, a molecular virologist who studies swine flu at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine in Madison.

I love Dr. Tim Johnson’s reply to Biden’s remark on ABC’s World News with Charles Gibson. Said Johnson “unfortunately he (Biden) sounds like he knows what he’s talking about, but really doesn’t.” Well said Dr. Tim.

change we can believe in….nothing changed ,,,,we are still being governed by absolute morons….janet nap..whatever her name is…biden, timmy g, harry reid…on and on …thats the best we can do?

Just a suggestion, but wouldn’t it be better to “do-over” Biden’s remarks BEFORE he says them rather than after?
Just sayin’

The trouble with VP Biden is that he makes good sense. Plus, he is no one’s talking doll. Big business, over-blown media, and politically correct governmental types have a hard time with somebody who is authentic and unscripted. Bravo, Joe! Keep telling the truth!

Well, Tom Harken is a member of the Transportation Committee and derives a lot of contributions from the transportation industry. Whereas, Joe Biden is one of the poorest members of the Senate and just tells it like it is. I know who I trust on this issue. Just as in everything else in politics, if you follow the money, you will see who the players are.

We’re just over 100 days in and there’s trouble in paradise already. How funny!!!

Obama needs to throw Biden under the bus like all the other incompentent people he associates with.

I am so tired of being told that what I saw with my own eyes didnt happen (that bowing thing), and now apparently what I hear with my own ears cant be trusted either.
h
It didnt take 2 hours before the various talking heads started telling us what Joe really said, as opposed to the words that left his mouth.
Sad thing is, he spoke like a true father and family man….when did we outlaw that.

I cant figure out the reasoning for telling us we shouldnt travel to Mexico but they continue to let them travel north to here unabated.

Spreading fear never helped anyone. Biden is a complete idiot.

Posted by: Leah | April 30, 2009, 10:27 pm 10:27 pm

Biden spoke truthfully about what he would tell his own family.. can’t fault him for that..

Posted by: E1 | April 30, 2009, 11:15 pm 11:15 pm

Um why is he being flammed for this comment. I think what he says makes sense! Isn’t that why they are closing all the schools? close quarters large groups of people.. just saying everyone got all mad at him but I think he makes a good point. Heck before he even said this I was doing the same thing.. stayign awat from large groups of people in close quarters.

After Biden was picked as the VP nominee he was hailed as the “8th Wonder of the World” but there’s a reason why he never got more than 1% of the vote and past the Iowa primary everytime he ran for president. Obama would do well to reel this loose cannon before he opens his mouth again and causes a serious diplomatic blunder.

Joe ! Aren’t you supposed to be watching the TARP funds ? There disapearing.

Watching both Obama and Biden these last 100 days, I would say Obama by far has made the most egregious gaffes, and is faaaaaar more dangerous, insideous, coniving, and evil. Anyway, Good for Joe Biden not towing the (special interest first, american people second)White House mentality.

Posted by: badger | May 1, 2009, 12:15 am 12:15 am

Jake Tapper, you are by far the most respectable, investigative political journalist ABC has. The rest seem to have resigned to covering the First Dog, and the enchanting moments of Obams first 100 days .
Having said that, Why do we not see stories on the sealing of Obamas Birth Certificate, college admissions records, campaign donor list, selective service information, etc? How about confronting Obama on his broken pledges of transparency, earmarks, and lobbyists? Why not more scrutiny over the boneheaded Air Force One flyover in Manhattan? Why is the transformational, candidate who pledged transparency to the people for their votes, not being held to the lofty standard he set for himself?

Since the swine flu is no more dangerous than the common flu (so far) Biden’s comments are inflammatory and over the top. But for me, personally, I agree with him. I don’t want to catch it so I’m trying to avoid confined public places. The people who should avoid travel are the young, the old, and those with compromised immune sytems. The rest of us are not likely to die due to swine flu regardless of what we do.

You are probably surprised at all of the support VP Biden has received for being an honest man who gave a loving response to a question about his family. He’s smart and talks the truth…big oddity in politics, I don’t care what party you’re with. Many of us would listen to Biden before most anyone else; do you know why? He doesn’t gaffe, that’s merely a media term; he say things with integrity and because he has true affection for others. Frankly, I don’t care anymore if that fact is disputed, we love Joe and would go to the mat for him because we know he would go to the mat for us. How many people could you say that about? BTW, Biden was purely and simply correct. He spoke with calm, and left it up to viewer to use their own judgment and intellect with travel and work choices. Good for him. The only reasons this became anything more than a really nice interview was because the White House jumped in suddenly to tell the rest of us what Biden really meant (sheesh) then MSM, (who can’t seem to leave the word gaffe alone, right?) jumped on the correction. WH and Harken were only protecting big business rather than Americans. Sad really. Love ya Joe Biden…keep on being real; it’s refreshing.

Come on people. He didn’t say commercial air travel should come to a grinding halt. That’s just how the talking heads are presenting it. He was asked what advice he’d give to his family. And he answered. Truthfully. Like any responsible parent, he advised his family to use caution and prudence. I think his words were sensible and practical. He didn’t tell them to hole themselves in…just to use common sense and avoid the obvious.

BOY! Talk about much ado about nothing! Jake Tapper, I understand you’re trying to build a career via blogging, and I wish you luck, and I understand that the talking heads need to justify the expense of 24 hour news… but GEEZ! This man is no George Bush… and remember how HE couldn’t open his mouth without sticking at least one of his feet in? So WHAT if Biden advised against going into crowds if you could avoid it – I SAY THE SAME THING! I think all this is a tempest in a teapot. Get real, his common sense comment is national news? Slow news day? And to the fool who said it was maybe time to ‘thin the herd’ – I think you should get in line for the ‘thinning’…

Posted by: sevresblue | May 1, 2009, 8:48 am 8:48 am

It is plain simple. The Obama administration is putting the travel industry, before the well-being of the people. Biden was absolutely right, the administration is catering to special interest.
Besides, we get mixed messages from this administration daily about the seriousness of this flue. Robert Gibbs who cant form a 3 syllable word without crapping in his Depends certainly should not be correcting Joe Biden, or anybody else for that matter.

Posted by: badger | May 1, 2009, 10:16 am 10:16 am

Biden is a buffoon who talks before he thinks, this isn’t the first time his made such a mis-statement. Experts at the CDC have stated he is wrong, ABC’s own Dr. Tim Johnson says he’s wrong. But all the Biden apologists are out trying to protect his looney-tunes statement. Besides, swine-flu seems to be much ado about nothing. Regular flu kills 36K per year in the US, nobody runs around crying “the sky is falling though,” do they?

I wonder if Joe rode the train back to Connecticut last nighyt ?

Posted by: Robert Morgan | May 1, 2009, 4:16 pm 4:16 pm

This is all Mexico’s fault. It’s time they face the facts and stop riding on the coat tails of the world!
The majority of Mexico’s wealth has come from American soil (that’s USA soil) and yet they act as if though they are the entitled to all that is good and have no obligation to their people (just look how they treat their people) and even less to the rest of the world. We wouldn’t even be having this discussion today if the Mexican Government had grew some ##### for once and faced their own problem (this outbreak) in a timely manner. Mexico should have closed their borders and requested that we do the same immediately after this began. Not only that they haven’t interviewed a single family member of a victim…therefore they have no idea of any leads as to where this started….
Just yesterday they said it was the World Health Organizations fault…I guess their next excuse was they didn’t speak English…idiots
