Obama Administration: Out With the ‘Swine,’ In With the ‘H1N1 Virus’

In the Oval Office last night as Health and Human Service Secretary Kathleen Sebelius was sworn in, President Obama said, "we wanted to swear her in right away because we’ve got a significant public health challenge that requires her immediate attention, and that is the H1N1 flu outbreak."

"H1N1"?

Well, yes. That’s the virus subtype the world is dealing with here.

Huh? Not "swine flu"?

On Sunday, the White House held a "press briefing on swine influenza."

On Monday, in his remarks before the National Academy of Sciences, President Obama used the unscientific name, referring to the virus as "swine flu."

What changed?

As has been noted by others, China, Kazakhstan, the Philippines, Thailand, Ukraine, and the United Arab Emirates have all banned meat and pork products from some parts of the US, according to the office of US Trade Representative Ron Kirk.

The World Health Organization reiterated that one cannot contract the virus by eating pork, and pointed out that no pig had been found yet with this particular virus.

Representatives of certain agricultural industries made their displeasure known to the Obama administration, especially Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, who said during a briefing on Tuesday that "there are a lot of hardworking families whose livelihood depends on us conveying this message of safety…and we want to reinforce the fact that we’re doing everything we possibly can to make sure that our hog industry is sound and safe and to make sure that consumers in this country and around the world know that American products are safe."

"This really isn’t swine flu. It’s H1N1 virus," Vilsack said. "We want to say to consumers here and abroad that there is no risk to you, there is no scientific evidence whatsoever that there is any link between consuming pork, prepared pork products, and the H1N1 virus."

Added Kirk, "We want to say to consumers here and abroad that there is no risk to you, there is no scientific evidence whatsoever that there is any link between consuming pork, prepared pork products, and the H1N1 virus." Kirk said that "we want to make sure that a handful of our trading partners don’t take advantage of this legitimate concern over public health and engage in behavior that could also damage the world’s economy."

Meanwhile, over at the Centers for Disease Control, the cdc.gov/swineflu page is up and running.

if it was called the but monkey flu, who would that offend? Would Barry ask totus to change the name to M323=90823=sdjsd FLU. that’s seems like a good name said barry’s ‘prompter

Moving from a colloquial reference to a more accurate one. I can’t really get too excited about it, and the point that some countries are using this to fabricated unfair trade barriers is legitimate. This is why the Executive branch is so big, so that even during one crisis there is a branch to note little things like how the colloquial name for this flu is brewing a billion dollar trade war.

“Just how stupid can people be?”
They can be really stupid as you like to point out. There are disclaimers on some of the most basic hair and cleaning products warning people not to eat them. If they call it ‘swine flu’ there is certainly a higher probability that it will unnecessarily hurt the sales of pork products.

I just played the mp3 voice over “Be Prepared” link found on the CDC site. It’s basic instructions are to call other people (i.e., local leadership) to find out what htey are doing. What if it’s a local leader who play’s the tape? This pretty lame advice. Cough and sneeze etiquette seems to be taking a back seat to call someone up (i.e, reach out and touch someone old ATT TV commercial style). So here’s some revisionist advice: cover your mouth when you cough and nose when you sneeze and remember to then wash your hands throughly to minimize passing on a non-airborne germ.
Dispose wads of Kleenex inside a trash receptical (alot of people seem to miss the can — it’s not a basket ball court if the make-shift hoop is outside your house it’s a TRASH CAN :} If your kitty or puppy sneezes – he or she might appreciate the occasional steam in the bathroom (just shut the door) even without a confirmed flue diagnosis. Let spiders build their webs right outside your doors and window – it won’t stop the flue bug — but it will stop the other bugs from entering the premises. If you got need to see a dentist/hygienist – be sure the and their other patients aren’t breathing in to your space. Worship open space – avoid muliti-people confined spaces (with poor ventilation (elevators, cars, busses, trains, trams…etc) walk instead.

We’ll need a catchy name for H1N1, or the “Swine Flu” will stick. I can only think of one thing that HiNi resembles and that’s a bit offensive too. Any suggestions?

Has any of you even noticed that this is THE SAME virus that they was calling “Bird flu” or “avian flu” for the last few years. that has been “speculated” to become the next pandemic. sounds kinda strange that now all of a sudden they change the name to swine flu but they cant even find a sick pig. this is all a thinning technique. government population control. watch when it really becomes an epidemic, how hard its gonna be to get the vaccine. how many people are gonna die? and dont try and blame this on “O” becuz this has been around for a few years now. we should have a sutible vaccine by now. but watch how it “won’t work” all of a sudden. cover your mouths and wash ur hands.

Posted by: cleveland | April 29, 2009, 11:29 am 11:29 am

To Cleveland,
No, this is NOT “bird flu”. Bird flu is H5N1. This is H1N1. This one, actually, from the patterns, hallmarks, time of year, etc, seems to be much closer in resembling the Spanish flu of 1918. Let’s hope it does not turn into that. But no, it is definitely not the same as bird flu. Check out the CDC website, or pandemicflu.gov and it has all the facts there.

Posted by: Anonymous 2378 | April 29, 2009, 11:34 am 11:34 am

Sure there’s no reason to believe you could get the flu by eating pork. Directly at least. Indirectly, couldn’t you say that it’s precisely because of our eating of pork that world now has this virus? That is, we’re trying to farm way more meat than is normal, and we’ve been warned about the dangers of overcrowded feedlots and antibiotics for years now?

Posted by: Greg | April 29, 2009, 11:34 am 11:34 am

Until it was pointed out by Barry, a huge number of people probably hadn’t made the link (no pun intended) between “swine” and “pig” and their breakfast bacon.

Intensive agriculture has a huge lobby. In the US and Mexico, the largest meat producers have have hog and chicken facilities packing thousands of animals together.
To satisfy the growing demand for meat, doubled over the past 50 years, factory farms developed intensive, brutal farming methods where pigs are confined for their entire lives, sometimes in cages too small to turn around. Lagoons of reeking liquid waste, often as large as a football field are part of these operations. In the US, these operations are monitored by the EPA, and over the years have been fined $Millions for pollution violations.
Hundreds of industrial-scale hog facilities have recently popped up in Mexico with thousands employed inside the crowded, pathogen-filled confinement buildings and processing plants. Even if the pigs do not appear sick, a mix of human, bird and swine influenza viruses can cycle in these cramped intense facilities, creating a good environment for mutation of novel viruses.
In the US, intensive livestock production also accounts for 55% of our erosion process, 37% of pesticides applied, 50% of antibiotics consumed, and 1/3 of total discharge of nitrogen and phosphorus to surface water. While it makes health sense to change these confined animal farming methods, going back to raising animals on small farms does not make Agri-business the same profits.
So, vote with your purchase. Buy free range meat raised by smaller farmers who care about their animals’ health and the well being of our environment. Or simply eat less processed meat.

Posted by: Parallax View | April 29, 2009, 12:14 pm 12:14 pm

idahogirl888—although your post is interesting, the virus has nothing to do with pork meat. eating pork is safe, you can even play with pigs and be safe. i think that is why the CDC has given a scientific name to the virus instead of “swine flu” which is a very misleading food. i don’t eat pork but that doesn’t make me any more safe than someone who does, as pigs have nothing to do with this.

Posted by: dale | April 29, 2009, 12:25 pm 12:25 pm

and for all the Limbaugh “telepromter/TOTUS” parroters the president of the united states does not assign scientific names to diseases. the CDC does that. but if you insist on “swine flu” stay away from Limbaugh you could be infected.

Posted by: Paul Wall | April 29, 2009, 12:26 pm 12:26 pm

dale—did Susan also say the sky is falling? don’t be scared, don’t panic. even if you catch it it’s no worse than the current influenza out there. the treatment is available (anti-retrovirals). those dying have pre-existing health problems related to immunity, the young, the old, those with compromised immune response. this is just the virus of the year. everyone panics and frets and nothing ever happens.

Posted by: Paul Wall | Apr 29, 2009 12:19:46 PM posted, “pigs have nothing to do with this”.
I whole heartedly disagree. While eating pig meat may not be dangerous, intensive hog (and/or poultry) production is most likely where this new virus evolved.
Last year, the Pew Commission on Industrial Farm Animal Production issued a report on factory farming that included research on emerging forms of avian-swine-human influenza viruses: “Populations exposed to infectious agents arising in concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs)…may be highly transmissible in or well beyond a community setting.”
And people who work in or live near these factory farms can be human bridges. Studies show hog workers in Europe and North America are far more likely than others to be infected with pathogens such as drug-resistant bacteria, Salmonella, and traditional swine flu.
Workers at these confinement facilities are more at risk of contracting and spreading “zoonotic” diseases than people on smaller-scale operations, with outdoor pens or pasture and far lower animal density. Buy local. Buy from small farms. We need to re-build safety and diversification into our food chain.

Posted by: idahogirl888 | April 29, 2009, 12:54 pm 12:54 pm

idahogirl888—this is a virus which requires no pig to be contracted or spread. eating cooked pork would destroy the virus (CDC) if it were present in the meat (no evidence of that). there are much worse diseases to get from eating uncooked pork than this virus.

Paul Wall (or whoever posted under his name) | Apr 29, 2009 1:01:57 PM said “this is a virus which requires no pig”.
This H1N1 virus was built with swine flu. According to the CDC, this new strain contains genetic components of human flu virus, avian flu virus and – for the first time ever – two types of SWINE flu virus: both American and Eurasian.
It is too early to know for sure if this new virus mutated and incubated on Mexican hog concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), but these cramped industrialized hog facilities are unquestionably suspect. Dr. E. Silbergeld, a professor of environmental health sciences at Johns Hopkins, is a leading researcher of pathogen evolution in CAFOs. Silbergeld says the viral genetic swimming pool from intensive swine production is probably the place where this H1N1 form evolved.
Eating pork may be safe today, but continuing current CAFO practices is not.
The traditional swine flu virus (not the H1N1 form in the news) is considered endemic in southern Mexico. It is now known that there was a widespread outbreak of a powerful respiratory disease in the small Mexican town of La Gloria near one of these swine factory farms – residents live with swarms of flies from the excrement lagoon. For some reason, vaccination of pigs against classic swine flu is prohibited in this area. According to Mexico’s Health Minister, Jose Angel Cordova, the virus “mutated from pigs, and then at some point was transmitted to humans.”
Also from the Pew Report on factory farming: “The continual cycling of swine influenza viruses and other animal pathogens in large herds or flocks provides increased opportunity for the generation of novel viruses through mutation….that could result in more efficient human-to-human transmission of these viruses.”

Can’t call it the “Swine Flu” because of the pork industry. Can’t call it the “Spanish Flu” as it was in 1918 either, as that would be an ethnic slur. H1N1 is the actual scientific name of the variant, but no matter what you call it… it kills.
Maybe it will the the NRA a new mantra: “Guns don’t kill… H1N1 Flu kills!”

The media is making too big a big deal over this. How many people died in the world today from other varients of the flu? Alot more than died today from this Porky Pig flu. The government is going to turn this manufactured crisis into the basis of why they should be in charge of all of our health care.
Simple rules: wash your hands, cover your mouth if you should sneeze or cough, stay home if your feel sick, and avoid unnecessary travel to places where the flu seems to be running rampant. These are all common sense measures. The world will not stop if you miss a day or two of work, or cancel your vacation plans. It’s just a matter of priorities.

You may call it “swine flu” but you generally CANNOT catch it from pigs! In 1918, they called it “Spanish Flu”, but that does not mean people caught it from Spaniards!
It is called “swine flu” only because it is of one of the FOUR subtypes known to be endemic in pigs – but is actually a different strain capable of human-to-human transmission, and NOT generally found in pigs. At root, it probably came originally from birds!
This all reminds me of my great-great-aunt who used to stuff paper in all her electrical outlets because she was afraid that the “juice” might leak out and make her sick! People will believe anything they tell themselves!

“It ORIGINATED in pigs.”
Actually, scientists now suggest that all types of influenza originated in BIRDS, and then sometimes perhaps transferred to pigs and other mammals – before making the jump to humans.

Posted by: EMDPOD | April 29, 2009, 8:54 pm 8:54 pm

“Why is the swine flu so much more important or severe than the regular flu”
It’s not, which is important to remember. The common, regular seasonal flu kills just over 36,000 people in the U.S. every year (over 13,000 since Jan. ’09), and between 250,000 and 500,000 worldwide each year.
This is a lot of hype about nothing. No one ever screams “pandemic” about the regular flu deaths every year, to which this “swine flu” pales in comparison.
Get a grip people. Good hygiene, and there are medications if you get it. Just like the regular old flu.

Spot on, RedRadish:
“It IS the SWINE FLU. Vilsack is nothing but a spokesman for agribusiness and has been in the pockets of these filthy corporations for years. Face the facts — if people did not support these abominations (factory farms) by eating their sickening products, we would not be facing this and more potential pandemics.”

I have seen people that support the joint Durbin/Grassley bill draw a correlation to the H1B visa and the H1N1 Swine Flu. That correlation is incorrect, but both the H1B and the H1N1 are a pandemic threat to the American society. The H1B body shops targeted by the bill will be forced to hire American talent and limit the number of H1Bs to 50%. Currently, Indian H1B body shops employ about 90% Indians and do not hire Americans and claim that no Americans are capable of doing any skilled work. The work Americans are excluded from by the H1B body shops are jobs like answering the telephone, accounting, computer-related occupations, news reporting, healthcare professional, best-buy salesman, software installation, etc., etc.

H One N One or HONO virus

I wish someone would hurry up and invent a vaccine for what ails most who have posted here. Oh, wait! They have. It’s called education. Must not have made very much vaccine, or it’s being hoarded.

Does anyone wonder why those 2 guys repeat each other word for word? Obviously trying to prop up the pork industry. But better conditions in that industry could have prevented this outbreak.

Why CDC blames the pig and calls the latest flu “SWINE FLU” and now H1N1 is beyond me. The international community calls it the American or Mexican Flu because influenza-strains are named by the geographical location where they first appeared. One exception was the very deadly Spanish flu from 1918 which did not originate in Spain but cam from Kansas USA.
It’s time to call it what it is, the American Flu because calling it Mexican would be soo racist.

This is not political – its potentially quite serious. It really depends on how the virus plays out.
There have been epidemics/pandemics of flu viruses which humans have little immunity to in the past. This is not the ordinary flu – rather quite potentially deadly – and by mechanisms that I need not get into here.
With luck, this will end up being an ordinary hybrid flu- if there is such a thing. If it has resemblance to the 1918 flu, or more recently SARS and the bird flu (which did not progress to human to human transmission) – we’d all better start listening to the government – and stop thinking its political.

H1N1 is a technical term that best describes the flu we are dealing with. It has very little to do with pigs anymore. Its potential to be deadly is because humans have not been exposed to anything like it before. It has the potential to be one of two things – which would be more clear if the Mexicans got their act together and collected some data.
1.) a “bad”, but regular old flu. Not fun, and it will kill some people, but nothing like doom-sayers are talking about.
2.) it could be a terribly virulent form of the virus (think SARS and bird flu). In this case, the danger is that your immune system can go ballistic after infection. In many cases the immune system’s overreaction is what actually kills the patient. This is what we don’t want, and what Obama is trying to call a “worst case scenario”.
Given that antiviral drugs are in short supply and a vaccine could at soonest be fast-tracked in 4 months or more, lets hope it is #1!

Only half right. Seasonal flus, plural, kill 36,000 in the US. Meanwhile, H1H1 — just one flu — has already killed roughly one hundred (maybe more) in less than a month. If it spreads and kills exponentially, as most flus do, H1N1 could be a lethal epidemic.
Also, for the cynics out there, don’t be lulled into complacency this summer if H1N1 seems to dissipate. That would actually follow the pattern of the Hong Kong flu in ’68, which emerged, went into hiding, then peaked in the fall and winter.
But no one knows what will happen. We’re just in the first pages of chapter one.

Obama has stopped using the term “Swine Flu” because it is not accurate, this is a combination of bird, swine and human flu. It is only if people acknowledge this and stop using a potentialy devestating pandemic as a political weapon against the food industry (which by the way is disgusting and certainly needs looking at)what we really need is accurate info on what to do to keep ourselves and loved ones safe, not scare mongering from people with their own agenda.

vice president in charge, joey biden said on the today show this am that everyone should avoid all forms of public transportation. he said that’s what he’d tell his family. this cat’s no fool. he knows who butters his bread. he would not get near an airplane, bus, subway, train, taxi, ferry because the pig flu is so wide spread.lide he said millions are going to die. stay home.

The Pew Commission has one thing on it’s agenda, That is to Stop All Forms of Modern Farming Practices. If they want to do some good. Go to Mexico, Help them educate about good hygene.
Soap & water may have stopped the virus. They could use some water, Have you been there. Have you requested, Where do you have water so I can clean up. Are they cleaning up after themselves. Vast majority of Americans can be fooled into what PEW & HSUS think is the best for all people. As a small livestock producer, I’ve raised these animals both ways. (cattle & hogs – Old building & New Buildings)
I would not go back to old methods. ANIMALS ARE HEALTHIER Today ! The old method you can not clean the buildings. New Buildings today can be cleaned. Records Speak for themselves.
It’s ALL About HYGENE ! The next time you go to Mexico ask to clean up with water ? You’ll be suprised how many places do not have water.

Despite the fact that the CDC WEBSITE still titles the section dealing with H1N1 “Swine Influenza (Flu)”, Dr. Bessor’s comments to NPR April 29 regarding his sudden avoidance of the term make a great deal of sense. People have jumped to the erroneous conclusion that eating pork is hazardous (hence the economic cosequences highlighted above); they are also likely to assume tha avoiding pork products will keep them safe.

One of the major complaints about the MSM is that the reporters really don’t know what they are reporting about and the information they give is either wrong, irrelevant or redundant. For Exhibit A on news reports that are lacking in useful information and demonstrate what a twit too many reporters are, see above.
Then there are those who are the receptacles for the screws that the aforementioned twits are administering. For wingnuts that think somehow calling a flu virus H1N1 rather than swine flu or vice versa makes one bit of difference, see above. And people wonder why the US is becoming a third world nation.

In less than 7 days this is coast to coast, I can’t help but believe this virus is manufactured and loosed in strategic poplulations to get it to this point.

Posted by: Wayne Jenkins | Apr 30, 2009 8:04:56 AM suggests “stop using a potentially devastating pandemic as a political weapon against the food industry.” And, back40acres | Apr 30, 2009 9:26:32 AM says “Go to Mexico, Help them educate about good hygiene”.
Here in the US, the National Pork Board asked all producers to take a number of steps to reduce the risk of avian-to-swine influenza transmission such as better the better hygiene back40acres suggests. However, according to the board’s director of veterinary science, we do not know if Mexican producers follow the same precautions.
So it is time to open the window into INTERNATIONAL food production processes. Even though America does not import live pigs from Mexico, there is an active international transfer of all kinds of animal products, including food components, animal waste, offal, and feed made from rendered animals. Some of it is imported from Asia or Europe – it’s impossible to be completely “biosecure”.
Here in the US, the pork industry has been working for nearly a year to set up a new monitoring and rapid animal-identification system for emerging swine flu strains in the U.S. herd. Consumers in California recently voted in new humane regulations for CAFOs.
American corporations moving south of the boarder to build massive confinement facilities should not be able to circumvent regulations or cut costs with poor sanitation. The international goal should be a healthier environment for animals, workers, and better control over the viral mixing bowls at pig and chicken operations.
Me? I’m still buying local, supporting smaller farms raising animals using less intensive processes.

GH1N1? Passing the buck, not the pork. Given that the outbreak of swine flu probably originated in a US owned pork processing factory farm in Mexico, I can understand why Smithfield’s CEO is pressuring the powers that be to stop calling this a swine flu outbreak.
I don’t know anyone stupid enough to think they will catch swine flu from eating bacon. I think the pork processors are much more worried that people will catch the drift that factory farming in unregulated environments bred the H1N1, er, SWINE flu which is evolving into a pandemic.
Factory farming, in addition to be abject misery for the animals, is a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses. Porcine viruses are especially able to jump the barrier to infect humans.
Pump the animals full of antibiotics so that you can crowd more of them together before they get sick and die before you can kill them to be eaten, and you help resistant strains of bacteria to develop.
Bacteria aren’t viruses, but unhealthy conditions breed virus and bacterial mutations that are resistant to drugs.

• People CANNOT get North American Flu from eating pork or pork products.
• Most influenza viruses, including the North American Flu, are not spread by food.
• There is no food safety issues related to the North American Flu.
• Preliminary investigations have determined that none of the people infected with the North American Flu had contact with hogs.
• This virus is different from respiratory viruses found in pigs.
• This virus has NOT been identified in hogs in the United States or anywhere in the world.
• The hybrid virus is contagious and transmits human-to-human.

Guys, they didn’t just pull the “H1N1″ name out of a hat. ALL flu strands are named after the H and N proteins (hemagglutinin and neuraminidase). These proteins are what allows the virus to infect and damage cells, hence their significance.
According to wikipedia, there are 16 different H antigens (H1 to H16) and 9 different N antigens (N1 to N9), which explains where the numbering comes from.
The spanish Flu of 1918 was a variation of H1N1. H5N1 was the bird flu.

MO,Human’s are not carnivores, humans are OMNIvores. Carnivores are solely meat eaters. If humans ate nothing but meat, they would serious health problems. Before you post, review what you about to post.

Is “swine flu” going the way of the “bailout,” which got exchanged for “economic stimulous package?” The only DC pol I trust on the subject of flu is Joe Biden.

Posted by: AspenFreePress | May 6, 2009, 6:48 pm 6:48 pm

Technically, since it is actually a combination of human, bird and swine viruses, it should be called :Man-Bird-Pig” flu, or “Mabipi” flu for short. Why are people not eating pigs because of this, anyway? Has anyone stopped eating birds because of this? Are cannibals abstaining from eating other people because of this? It just makes no sense that everyone is focusing on the poor little piggies. Although, some are probably grateful that we are not eating them. I know I am.

The best treatment for influenza infections in humans is prevention by vaccination. Work by several laboratories has recently produced vaccines. The first vaccine released in early October 2009 was a nasal spray vaccine. It is approved for use in healthy individuals ages 2 through 49.
