Obama Asks For $100 Million in Budget Cuts: Is it Just a Drop in the Bucket?

ABC News’ Sunlen Miller reports: Flanked by all the members of his Cabinet (except yet-to-be-confirmed Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius) President Obama convened his first official Cabinet meeting this afternoon — in appropriately enough, the Cabinet Room. “I emphasized to this Cabinet that we have had to take some extraordinary steps in order to shore up our financial system and to deal with an unprecedented economic crisis. As a consequence, we’ve had to spend a significant amount of money,” the president admitted, adding that it was “the right” and “necessary” thing to do. However, the president said, the government has an obligation to run efficiently and spend every taxpayer dollar wisely. “So one of the things — messages that I delivered today to all members of the Cabinet was, ‘As well as you’ve already done, you’re going to have to do more.’ I’m asking for all of them to identify at least $100 million in additional cuts to their administrative budgets,” he said. Obama also added that in the next few weeks, that they will cut at least 100 current programs in the federal budget. “None of these savings by themselves are going to solve our long-term fiscal problems,” the president admitted. “But taken together, they can make a difference and they send a signal that we are serious about how government operates.” The president expressed concern about a “confidence gap” with the American people. “We’ve got to earn their trust. They’ve got to feel confident that they’re dollars are being spent wisely and I have every confidence that the team that I put together is going to be able to deliver on that efficiency and productivity in the weeks, months, and years to come.” Isn’t $100 million just a drop in the bucket, one reporter asked. “It is and that’s what I just said," the president said. "None of these things alone are going to make the difference but cumulatively, they make an extraordinary difference because they start setting a tone. So what we’re going to do is line by line, page by page, $100 million there, $100 million here, pretty soon, even in Washington, it adds up to real money.” Republican leaders deemed it ironic that the Obama administration is touting $100 million in spending cuts, but pushing a budget that would add to the national debt. “I appreciate the efforts to save millions by identifying unnecessary or duplicative government spending. But let’s not forget that at the same time they’re looking for millions in savings, the president’s budget calls for adding trillions to the debt,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said in a statement, per ABC News’ Z. Byron Wolf. “The nation’s debt is at its highest level ever, but under the administration’s budget, the amount of public debt will double in five years and triple in 10.” — Sunlen Miller

I am thinking back to Clinton’s putting Gore in charge of reinventing government when Gore sought out government wasteful spending as part of a two prong strategy of raising taxes to balance the budget.
“Republican leaders deemed it ironic that the Obama administration is touting $100 million in spending cuts”
And here I thought the height of irony was releasing a budget with no numbers to refute the charge that one had no plan.

The reason this will never add up to real money is this; 100,000,000.00 to a Trillion dollars is the same as a Penny is to 100.00. Just think about this, you have a 100.00 budget, you need to cut back so you ask everyone to get together and cut one penny from the budget, you even call a news conference about it. You do this 25 times and you have saved a quarter. We need to cut 10′s of billions of dollars from the budget, not millions. 4 years is not enough time to make a million, or a hundred million her and there add up to anything significant when you are looking at a trillion dollar budget. It is all for show. Show they are serious about how business operates? Are you kidding me? Here is your penny, no get off tv, stay home for a while and get to work doing the things you were elected to do.

Posted by: cool-aid | April 20, 2009, 4:10 pm 4:10 pm

Let’s be fair. The democrats will have paid for the $10+ trillion in added debt after only 100,000 years of savings…

Obama thinks Americans are dumb.
Probably because many bought the story that he didn’t bow.
He’s counting on us to be too stupid to know that $100 million compared to the trillions in his budget is a drop in the bucket.
I think only his supporters will think this is great news.

I’m tired of these Republicans claiming that “the nation’s debt is at its highest level ever.”
It has ALWAYS been at its highest level ever, because it has always been growing and never gotten any smaller. So how on earth could it be at anything BUT its highest level ever?
If they were so concerned about it, why didn’t they do anything about for the last 30 years that they’ve been in control?

Posted by: Socrates | April 20, 2009, 4:11 pm 4:11 pm

If these cuts were from Hillary, Kerry, Edwards, or McCain, these measures would be seen as necessary.

Posted by: nubiangent08 | April 20, 2009, 4:11 pm 4:11 pm

Isn’t it ironic how the GOP leaders have selective amnesia when it comes to budget deficits. One after another after another under Bush.
If tax cuts alone will save the economy, then we would never have gotten into this mess in the first place, because of the Bush tax cuts. They don’t work when they are not provided to the people who actually spend their money. Those cuts were more of the failed Reagan trickle down crap – yep crap.
I’m from KY, and if the election last Nov. had been after the initial reaction to bailouts of the auto industry, Mitch McConnell would have been defeated. Just the counties surrounding the Chevy Corvette plant alone would have been enough to have defeated McConnell. We will be getting rid of Mr. Idiot Bunning next year, then get ‘ol Mitch four years later. How the GOP in the senate could allow him to keep his position shows just how stupid they really are.

Probably like I find it ironic that Democrats are supporting Obama for being much less fiscally responsible than the last Republican Presidents were.
But hey, I remember when Dems fought against Bush’s spending. Why not just eliminate all the government programs Bush spent too much money on? Roll back all the Bush spending!

Looks like Obama knew about the tea parties afterall.
When the WH said Obama was unaware that tea parties were being held in all 50 states–it reminded me of the time Bush didn’t know gas was $4 a gallon.

A nice symbolic attempt but a $100M in savings is a rounding error when one talks about budget deficits in the trillions. The President should be directing his cabinet members to seek $500B in reductions. It is only at that level that they’ll be meaningful.
If this administration wants to get serious about cutting costs, they need to start with the handsome compensation packages paid to government employees at all levels.
In the private sector, people must work to age 65 to collect social security or to avail themselves of 401K savings. No longer do companies offer retirement plans.
In the taxpayer supported public sector, one can retire after roughly 25 years on the job, tap into a pension plan that they’ve paid virtually nothing into, then see it adjust each year for inflation. Even more insulting, they can essentially retire 20 years before a private sector employee.
If the government would commit to a level playing field between public employees and their private sector peers, the budget shortfall would be resolved immediately.
Is it any wonder why so many want to feed at the trough via a government job?!?

Please, come on! Are you serious? Do you really think that those earmarks in the stimulus bill would have added up to any more than “a drop in the bucket”?
The problem with earmarks is not that they are wasteful spending — the problem with them is that congress uses them to barter votes with eachother (something that is ethically up for discussion, but certainly not absolutely wrong).

Why isn’t ACORN on Napalitano’s list of radical extremist?
Just because they get paid by the taxpayers to be loud and obnoxious bullies that shouldn’t keep them off the DHS list.

Posted by: riley | April 20, 2009, 4:24 pm 4:24 pm

What the two of you are missing is the Republicans stopped voting for Republicans when they proved to be overzealous spenders. The Democrats came into Congress (and this Presidency) on the promise of fiscal responsibility. You can’t say Republicans didn’t care, because the evidence shows the opposite- they lost power over it.
Cutting $100Million while operating a $1.75 trillion deficit is not what people had in mind.

“What the two of you are missing is the Republicans stopped voting for Republicans when they proved to be overzealous spenders.”
I thought it was when Republicans finally got into power and immediately stopped being what Republicans claimed to have stood for; from their spending to their intrusion into private lives (Schiavo) to their corruption to their xenophobia.
Republicans in power demonstrated that Republicans ideals were merely hot air to get elected.
All these things have combined to perhaps permanently damage the Republican brand.

Yes the Republicans also ran up big deficits, and Bush was the biggest spending president in history, bigger than any Democrat, but the current administrations borrowing and spending plans are massive. They are orders of magnitude bigger than Bush’s. To save America from total collapse, we need to stop the government borrowing and spending. And the fact that “Republicans do it too” doesn’t make Obamas trillions of borrowing to bail out leveraged speculators okay. And the fact that going back to George Bush’s level of spending still would be ridiculous big government spending doesn’t change the facts–the current administration plans will put America much more deeply in debt that the previous one did. Again, I hate the Bush spending. But the Obama spending is even bigger. Obama is great. Just great. But he is borrowing from the workers of the future to pay the bankers of the present. And he is doing it on such a massive scale (Trillions!) that it is catastrophic for the county. Would McCain or Bush have done anything different. Probably not. But the fact that it’s Obama doing it does not magically mean doubling the national debt in one year to help cover bad bets by bankers is somehow an act that helps the poor.

Cutting a $100 million dollars from a $3,600,000,000,000 budget is a joke. This won’t even pay one days interest on the debt. It’ll be funny to see how Obama spins this to make it look like he’s actually doing something. It’ll be even funnier when we start seeing how the Obama kool-aid drinkers start repeating this line and using it to say how Obama is serious about cutting the deficit. Luckily we haven’t all drunk the kool-aid. Smart Americans see through this lie just like we see through all the other Democrat and Republican lies. The Tax Day Tea Parties were just the beginning. Go ahead and laugh at us. We’ll see who is laughing after the 2010 elections when we clean the house of all the garbage. Both Democrats and Republicans who voted for the bailouts and the excessive spending will be voted out. The American people are ready for real change, not the recycled lies of the Democrats and Republicans.

Like a lot of folks in this state, I have a job. I work, they pay me. I pay my taxes and the government distributes my taxes as it sees fit. In order to get that paycheck, I am required to pass a random urine test with which I have no problem. What I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to people who don’t have to pass a urine test.
So here is my Question.
Shouldn’t one have to pass a urine test to get a welfare check because I have to pass one to earn it for them?
Please understand, I have no problem with helping people get back on their feet. I do, on the other hand, have a problem with helping someone sitting on their rump –doing drugs, while I work. . . . Can you imagine how much money the state would save if people had to pass a urine test to get a public assistance check?
I guess we could title that program, ‘Urine or You’re Out’

Please people, stop the Democrat/Republican BS! The debt is not a partisan issue. It affects all of us! Spending more money isn’t the answer. It’s what caused this mess. What Bush did with overspending was despicable, but that doesn’t make it ok for Obama to do the same thing. Enslaving future generations to a debt they will never be able to repay is immoral regardless of whether it is a Democrat or a Republican that does it. Start thinking of what is best for America, not what is best for your political party.

You know, when politicians make statements without having to answer questions about them, it’s all for show. Obama answered questions. McConnell doesn’t give any reasons as to why Obama’s budget is so bad. You have to spend money to make money. Tax cuts and reduced spending won’t eliminate the deficit, they’ll just keep it where it is, which is absolutely useless. Why not raise it so that it can be slowly eliminated completely?
Also, irony? Really? Not credit to Obama for acquitting to the Republicans for cutting spending, when they really have no power? It’s not irony. You tell him you want him to cut spending, but if it’s to help reduce the blow of his budget, it’s irony.

I can understand why right wingers are so desperate to paint ACORN as the cause of all of life’s problems.
After all you can’t blame the financial collapse on greed and the lack of checks against that greed touted as the solution by the right wing for decades, can you?
Of course not. After the collapse you have to blame a group that organizes black and brown minorities.
That way you can tell your racist followers it was those evil minorities’ fault and not the greedy Wall Street banking firms.

Any of you people who STILL support this man, who you call President should have your head examined. Obama is irresponsible. Bush may have spent money..but it wasn’t his intention to bankupt our country irresponsibly like BO is doing. He’s smoke and mirrors and nothing else. He thinks of himself, his praise, not the American People or America’s praise. He’s dispictable.

PLAINS GEORGA (Reuters)Former President Jimmy Carter said today he is in full support of President Obamas budget mess; when asked why, Jimmy stated – “I was really hoping I would lose my title of the “Worst President Ever” when “W” was in office, unfortunately, it didn’t happen, close but no peanut.” His hope now is that the way Obama is going he will earn the title before the end of his first 100 days. If this happens, this will be another first for this President of so many firsts.

Both parties are the same. They both want control. I think they should have given the money to the people and let us spend it to spark the economy. The President claims they had to take these extraordinary steps to safe the financial system. Can any of you tell me where all that money went? And are we really any better off than we were when Mr. Obama took over? Is his plan for fixing the economy so complicated that it cannot be understood by the average person? If they had given the money to the people to spend we would all know where it went, but as it stands all we have is the word of another politician.

Mr. Obama only is concerned about his personal praise from other countries…not the praise that the USA should be getting from other countries. Instead, Obama criticizes the USA, its citizens. He’s weakened our national defense – he’s using smoke and mirrors and lies about making the American people believe he’s increased the national defense budget; when in fact, his administration moved current supplemental budget allocations into the national defense budget – to make it “look like” he’s increased the national defense $$$. He’s a frauds fraud. 48 million voters studied and researched who Obama was before Nov 4th…while 52 million other Americans should have researched Obama before Nov 4th. No one knew who Obama was – yet, America voted him in to the highest office in the nation – if not the world. 52 million Americans were foolish and dangerously ignorant – if not plain stupid. Look at the facts of Obama. Not because he gives a good speech (due to notes and teleprompters) – he ran a successful campaign – but based on lies to get votes – he’s looked at as a pretty cool guy – but, his heart and character is not in a place to be the best and do the best for the United States of America and it’s citizens. He and his administration violate the USA Constitution constantly – nothing is visibly being done and no one being accountable. Our country is in the worst state of security and stability than ever before…in a very short time. 2012 – WE THE PEOPLE – REALLY DO NEED A CHANGE – A CHANGE BACK TO VALUES OF THE US CONSTITUTION. OUR FOUNDERS WERE CONSERVATIVES WHO PRODUCED THE CONSTITUTION – TO PROTECT its CITIZENS FROM BIG GOVERNMENT – NOT FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO INFILTRATE AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE CITIZENS. WE NEED TO GET BACK TO CONSERVATIVE VALUES FOR OUR CHILDREN’S’ WAY OF LIFE FOR THE FUTURE, OTHERWISE, YOUR CHILDREN WILL PAY FOR THIS ADMINISTRATION’S IRRESPONSIBLE ACTS.
EDUCATE YOURSELF – MARK LEVIN’S BOOK – “LIBERTY AND TYRANNY” – WONDERFUL BOOK HOW, WHAT AND WHY OUR US CONSTITUTION WAS ADOPTED AND WHAT THE LIBERAL LEFT TOOK OUR COUNTRY TO AND HOW.

The best comment in ages is Psalm 2008-2012, posted by Sandcrab! It is absolutely incredible that anyone would suggest that this is a real “cut” in expenses; it’s obviously intended to impress people who have no sense of proportion, to wit. This $100,000,000 figure is .000132 of the $760,000,000,000 bailout amount (that we know of, anyway). Let’s put this in proper perspective: Say you make $50,000 a year and you get a raise amounting to .000132 of that amount. Your new salary is $50,006; pretty slick huh? Now, what can we call that $6 increase?? I’ve got it; it’s SMALL CHANGE YOU CAN BELIEVE IN!

That dog’s got too many stripes for conspiracy theories. Sure the right is front & center; why wouldn’t they be?
It is the NO-INCUMBENT message that is bigger than the right alone. Ignore this, but it won’t go away. The banking committees in both houses of congress failed to do their job, (all of them, even the “community reinvestment act” ones.) however the republicans get the loin share of the blame with both D&R voters, but it’s only the far left partisans (30%)who believe the republicans did it alone.
There is a majority who knows when someone needs to be fired! Get ready for a new batch of representatives come 2010&2012, and I’d even bet they’ll be mostly democrats, just not the same ones.

I posted the following earlier and someone said good idea but who pays for it. I do not know but imagine it still would be cheaper than the welfare check handed out.———-Like a lot of folks in this state, I have a job.

Now I’m putting my efforts and tax money behind President Obama (because he does have a brain in his head, and a good one) because I too believe that investing in America is what is best for America and best for my daughter’s future. If the Prez does think we’re stupid, who can blame him? I would have to agree that at least the half that voted us into this mess weren’t thinking through things. It’s the taxes which will have to be drastically raised just to pay the interest on the government debt that is causing the concern. I think that there was some concern when Bush was in office but what he did in eight years Obama is on track to double in less than four years. At the current rate of spending (which has significantly increased under the present administration) our tax revenue will pay for nothing other than the interest on the debt owed by the government. In the first year that the debt was recorded (1789) the debt was $75,463,476.00 and when Barack Obama took office (January 19 2009) it was $10,628,881,485,510.00 and as of today it is $11,218,863,034,278.00. This is an increase of $589,981,548,768.00 since this administration took over and if this rate of spending is continued the debt at the end of one year in office will be approximately $13,578,789,000,000.00 and at the end of four years in office will be approximately $20,658,569,000,000.00. This is debt that the country does not have the money to repay anywhere in the near future. Looking at history James Madison, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan, Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford Hayes, Chester Arthur, Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover accomplished the one thing that no administration since 1933 has accomplished and that is to reduce the government debt while in office. All other Presidents have increased the government debt during their term of office. Who had the biggest change you ask? In order of magnitude (percentage of change as over the years the actual numbers have increased so the only fair method is to look at the percentage of change during each administration) they are:
1. Abraham Lincoln (2,959% increase, Civil War years)
2. Martin Van Buren (1,558% increase, Andrew Jackson had reduced the debt by over 99% during his preceding terms)
3. Franklin D. Roosevelt (1,147% increase, WW II)
4. Woodrow Wilson (822% increase)
5. James Polk (395% increase)
6. James Buchanan (315% increase)
7. Ronald Reagan (286% increase)
8. James Madison (216% increase)
9. George W. Bush (185% increase
10. Gerald Ford (147% increase)
This is the top 10 so the next question to answer is where did William Clinton rank among the Presidents who had an increase in the government debt during their time in office? William Clinton had an increase of 136% in office which ranked as number 13 (not a ranking to be proud of). Where would Barack Obama rank if his administration continues the rate of spending we have experienced to date? Barack Obama at the current rate of spending would have an increase of the federal debt to the tune of $194% which would rank him as number 9 on the list of top ten ahead of George W. Bush. This data is all verifiable from the dept of the treasury website, just google government debt and it will lead you to the right area.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Cut a latte or two out of your annual budget and you’ve just done as much belt-tightening as President Barack Obama asked of his Cabinet on Monday.
The thrifty measures Obama ordered for federal agencies are the equivalent of asking a family that spends $60,000 in a year to save $6.
Obama made his push for frugality the subject of his first Cabinet meeting, ensuring it would command the capital’s attention. It also set off outbursts of mental math and scribbled calculations as political friend and foe tried to figure out its impact.
The bottom line: Not much.
The president gave his Cabinet 90 days to find $100 million in savings to achieve over time.
For all the trumpeting, the effort raised questions about why Obama set the bar so low, considering that $100 million amounts to:
–Less than one-quarter of the budget increase that Congress awarded to itself.
–4 percent of the military aid the United States sends to Israel.
–Less than half the cost of one F-22 fighter plane.
–7 percent of the federal subsidy for the money-losing Amtrak passenger rail system.
–1/10,000th of the government’s operating budgets for Cabinet agencies, excluding the Iraq and Afghan wars and the stimulus bill.

Let’s face it. Between the massive bailouts and trillions of dollars in new deficit spending, we taxpayers are all being robbed in broad daylight. And there’s apparently nothing we can do about it. Obama and Congress aren’t listening.
There simply aren’t enough taxpayers in the top tiers to pay the skyrocketing tax bill and the associated interest. The working poor and middle class are going to get hammered. Big time.

The bravery of Obama is amazing!! The guts this man has to make the hard choices necessary to slash and gouge the budget by 0.0003% is truly awesome. Now that all waste has been removed and only the absolute minimum, the bare-bones essentials remain in the budget, no one can dare to question the massive tax hikes Obama has in store.

I am going to pay taxes no matter what, so, I would like to see my taxes working better and smarter…And it is just dumb to think that taxes will not eventually increase…
One man’s Spending is another man’s investments.
Bush spent wholly and we got nothing but the Iraq war and the rebuilding of Iraq…
At least Obama wants to spend and invest in this country…This is nothing but, Smart investment spending.
I want investments in healthcare, in our public schools systems, in our infrastructure, in new energy etc. It is not wrong to invest in ourselves, and in our own country as some would have us believe. We have invested and rebuilt other countries, why not ours?
Anymore, I generally see Republicans as getting what they can and pissing on everybody else. Whomever disagrees with them is an idiot or a socialist or on welfare recipient or a facist… it’s pathetic as their criticisms are unceasing.
These are no ordinary times, so to speak of spending as if these are comparable to any time except the great depression is thoughtless to say the least. Exceptional actions and risk must be taken in Exceptional years…do anything less is to miss an Exceptional opportunity to become something more…
