Obama Refuses the Bait
The president’s schedule for his first international summit has been packed. He’s fighting a cold. But President Barack Obama still managed to have some fun at the final press conference — his most informal as president — setting off a frenzy when he decided to depart from the script and take a few random questions from the floor. No big surprises at the fifty-minute session, but as I watched the president today, I was struck by how much he’s learned about managing expectations. At his first prime time press conference back in February, Obama set up his Treasury Secretary for a fall when he seemed to promise that Timothy Geithner would have an answer to the "toxic asset" crisis the next day. Problem was, the plan wasn’t ready. Since then, the administration has managed a string of hits: a smooth rollout of the public-private partnerships to buy up those bad bank assets; a surprisingly tough move on GM and Chrysler; and a G-20 summit that under promised (thanks, in part, to French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s loose talk about leaving early) and over delivered (aided by the European Central Bank’s decision to lower interest rates again). The markets are loving it, but Obama’s not taking any of it for granted. Maybe he senses just how brutal tomorrow’s employment report is likely to be. When ABC’s Jake Tapper asked the president if he was now confident about avoiding a global depression, Obama didn’t take the bait. Stressing twice that there are no "guarantees" in life, Obama settled on a familiar metaphor: "The patient is stabilized," he said, "pretty good care is being applied…[but] the wounds still have to heal." It must have been tempting at that moment to take more of a victory lap. And the president seemed for a moment to flirt with the thought. That he didn’t says a lot about how he got to that podium today. –George Stephanopoulos

Keep making progress POTUS OBAMA! We’re behind you 1000%!
Let the whiners keep whinining while we keep WINNING! Once the economy and this country is back in order, they’ll still find something to whine about.
In fact, that’s all they’re good for. CHEESE TO GO WITH THAT WHINE or maybe a WAAAAAAAAMBULANCE?

George – you really should get off your Obama-Cloud to feel what the real earth feels like. ..Obama fighting a cold…
Do you really think America cares about that as being news-worthy with the crisis of this outrageous Congress and President is causing? GW Bush made our country’s deficit higher – but Obama is making it higher and higher – I would think he would put this in reverse – no spending – isn’t that what he was chanting – Change?
Obama could care less about we citizens, with the exception that he wants us to make a paycheck so he can tax it for his government spending way beyond our means.

Anyone who thinks that Obama is making progress – has no idea what they’re talking about – unless you are referring to his making progress in the metamorphasis of the USA into a Marxist country. He wants control of everything…evern your lives. This adminstration is “using” the economy crisis to pass their spending bills – how blind can all of you be?
Some of the so-called journalist out there – should go back to college to figure out what it means to be a “reporter”, not hide the news, but report the news – the truth of the news. You owe it to the American People.

The stock market goes up. Thousands of employees are laid off. What makes Wall St happy makes Americans lives harder. Kind of a cruel irony and also a heavy insult to hard working Americans. Of course unemployment will lag all the stimulus. Hopefully it will rebound but not before destroying people’s lives. So – we dumb working schmucks get up, dust ourselves off, and try again. We peer into the future worried that this may just happen again and again. Greed has not been vanquished. It is hiding just around the next corner.

All you guys seem to want is for the media to slam and bash Obama. They can’t say anything positive about the guy or that puts them “in the tank” for him. Just negativity, cynicism, nastiness. Too bad you feel that way cause your lives must be miserable. When Obama succeeds and doesn’t fail like all you Limbots want him to, whatever will you do? Move out of the Country, I hope.

Still glad I voted for him.
Back in the day, and it wasn’t that long ago – when TV was interrupted with “Breaking News”, it meant that someone had been shot. It really was news. The weather report hadn’t yet become “THE STORM DESK!!!!”. People weren’t constantly screaming on TV, reporters didn’t cry (if you can call Glenn Beck a reporter, or anything close) they actually reported news and didn’t try to entertain us at the same time, they were there to inform.
Obama, for some reason, takes me back to those times. Calm, measured responses, and a sense that his administration has a handle on the problems, but it’s going to take more than a week. We screaming idiot masses are still only going to wait a week for results, but we may be learning.
And I’m VERY glad that we’re not subjected to Vice President Palin at this time.

from Cicero -
“A nation can survive its fools
and even the ambitious.
But it cannot survive treason from within.
An enemy at the gates is less formidable,
for he is known and he carries his banners openly against the city.
But the traitor moves among those within the gates freely,
his sly whispers rustling through all alleys,
heard in the very halls of government itself.
For the traitor appears no traitor;
he speaks in the accents familiar to his victim,
and he wears their face and their garments
and he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men.
He rots the soul of a nation;
he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of a city;
he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist.
A murderer is less to be feared. The traitor is the plague.”

H-T-T:”I would think he would put this in reverse – no spending – isn’t that what he was chanting – Change? ”
No. And I am frankly AMAZED that you think that was what he was running on. “No spending” was quite explicitly, clearly MCCAIN’S platform. Obama equally explicitly, when asked point blank, rejected it as even a plank. Were you in the country for the campaign – it really seems you didn’t catch a single debate, platform whitepaper, or even bumpersticker.

H-T-T – you must be seriously challenged to think that a spending freeze is in order. Even the GOP has had to back off that lame idea when EVERY economist says that would kill the US economy. A ‘Stimulus” bill IS a “spending bill.”
I was so proud to see my President today actually leading not only the US but the world. We could NOT have made a better choice.

Obama does make quite a positive impression on any group with whom he meets. People seem to genuinely care what he has to say. He isn’t diminished in any way because of his age or race. They look to him for advice and counsel even though he is much younger than some of these people. He is truly an excellent leader. We are so fortunate to have him as our President.

Didn’t I hear something about Cheney recently undercutting Obama overseas calling Obama a “lightweight” to the Israelis? Hmmm. It looks like a lighter hand using intelligence works far better with international affairs than the forceful fist and threats the Bush/Cheney administration liked to slam on the table. Obama is taking America in the new direction of building allies instead of enemies. He is doing exactly what we voted for. Those of you that don’t want world peace and a strong economy just keep on complaining. Fewer and fewer people will be interested in your rhetoric.

Does all the Challenges to the US (at the moment) (4/09) mean that the world does not respect Obama. They didn’t challenge Bush to this degree ever, and when they did challenge him he let them know he would not put up with it – Showing what it means to have a strong leader.
At least so far (and maybe in reality) Obum is a weakling. Will he let the world run over us (is that why the world favored him SO much)………………… You see you Infantile Liberals; Bush was rising to the occasion (and McCain would have also) more than you would have ever known, ‘Otherwise’. hal,
The market has only done well for a couple weeks or so. It would have continued down if Obum & Geithner hadn’t gotten a clue and dealt with some of the concerns of the market with some ‘Concrete Proposals’ (as opposed to just their naive philosophy).
However, if they don’t stick to speaking to the ‘Real World Market Concerns’ (and stop cheating on their taxes) it could go back down (where it had been heading during most of O’bum’s proposals).

President Obama is doing a wonderful job and we can begin to see a very small turn around and confidence in the market..I cannot understand for the life of me how people expect the government to address the current situation without putting in some money to stimulate the economy! The folks who are criticizing do not give any alternative..they just criticize..How do you stimulate an economy without investing some money in the process? Can one of you wise anti Obama blogger explain that to me?

Obama is going to be the most successful American president..because he is by far the wisest, most intelligent, and most articulate. Even some Republicans who have interfaced with the man exclaimed that he is smarter than Bush by leaps and bounds..even Gates the defense man intimated that…Obama listens and learns from the experts..Obama admits when he makes a mistake and promises to do better next time..not like Bush who never admitted mistakes..I never understood that one because no one’s perfect..Obama builds consensus..and is good at negotiations..with give and take..look how easy he and the Russian president were able to come to an agreement. The guy is simply the best! Now you Bushites and Republicans eat your heart out! I use to be one..No more! That party is for the rich and those who pretend to be rich! H-T-T Hoover tried cutting back on spending in ’31 and the bottom fell out of the economy (that was low at the time but holding steady). FDR spent a lot but the recovery stalled in ’36 when he gave in to repubs and tried to balance the budget. WWII came and increased spending (on nothing that would be used except once) and the economy boomed. Peacefull spending gets something everyone can use and booms the economy.

We are not out of the woods by a long shot, but congrats to our Prez, who is making some good moves and making us friends again in the world at large. I think this scary time is bringing about some much needed changes in the way Americans live their lives and view the world around them. I know I will never take prosperity for granted again, and I will stay involved, helping people who have less every way that I can.
For people who denigrate and fear Obama, I say let a little sunshine in. We all need some very badly.

I thought Tapper’s question was a good one for Obama. I have to agree, he is doing much better at answering questions without being obvious he is not answering the question. A great skill for any politician.
As far as all the chatter regarding the radical ends of the political spectrum, please continue. Those of us in the middle (we used to be called the “great silent majority”) find the banter quite amusing. If only we could harness all that hot air for something useful, like raising vegetables or powering cars.
On a serious note regarding the budget and the economy, Obama’s success will probably translate into liberal votes in the midterms, for obvious reasons. However, Obama’s failure will probably bring about moderate successes in the midterms. I believe the country will have had enough failure from those who govern from the political poles. I’m a Republican, but I have to admit, Clinton did a great job of governing from the center (well maybe slightly left of center).

>>>Obama is going to be the most successful American president..because he is by far the wisest, most intelligent, and most articulate. Even some Republicans who have interfaced with the man exclaimed that he is smarter than Bush by leaps and bounds.<<< Sorry, but I think histiry would conform that Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, JQ Adams, Jackson, Lincoln, Wilson, FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Reagan and maybe even Clinton (and probably others) would be ahead of Obama in "intelligence and articulation." Plus, they were executives. And comparing Obama to Bush isn't exactly definitive on the issue…after all, Bush was such a dunce, right? Not too high a hurdle to cross, right?

Maybe we do need all this social spending that’s being crammed down our throats. Maybe if those of us who believe in hard work and our own merit have to pay more and more taxes for schools that really do teach, and for back-to-work and other retraining programs, people like [name withheld] could learn to spell and write grammatically correct comments. Then they would appear at least thre-quarters baked. “Whinining???” Isn’t that what horses do?
George, my opinion of you is declining rapidly. Remember the last time you had a man-crush on a POTUS, and spouted all these wonderful things? Remember what happened? History could repeat itself. With “journalists” like you’re becoming, the White House should bail out the networks and pay your salaries, too. This post is really over the top. I’m sorry – your bias is completely out in the open on this one. At least Donna Bazile was up-front right from the start. When you’re asked to grade debates and press conferences in the future, there is no way that you can claim to be objective.

repugs should be chained to a rock and dumped overboard. oh yeah, that’s exactly what the repug, bushie did to our economy. now all of us are sinking. obama, a true leader, will help get us out of this mess. i’m so satisfied each time one of these right wingnuts denounce everything obama without checking their facts. exactly how bushie ran the government, without the facts.

Obama and the Democrats on Capitol Hill have relegated the Republicans into the abyss of irrelevency for a while. With things so quickly looking up (Cantor’s already snivelling about the Dems having “overstated” the economic crises), the party of whining and carping but no new ideas is dead in the water.

What the heck, what kind of victory lap was he supposed to run? The only thing he “accomplished” was basically turning over the monitoring of our financial system to the new world order. His stated goals of getting the entire world to spend the amount of deficit spending that AmeriKa is embarked on, well, he failed miserably at that!
Maybe the victory lap should have been when Michelle touched the Queen of England, or perhaps when Odumba bowed to the Saudi King, that the press didn’t castrate him or his wife for being naive. Guess I kind of missed the point there, George. Nothing was really accomplished at G20 according to Obama’s own pre-set agenga.

“….YOU GO MR OBAMA , CONTINUE TO SERVE UP THE WELL DESERVED BIG STEAMING PLATES OF CROW TO THE NAYSAYER OBSTRUCTIONIST CONNIVING REPUBLICANS!!!”

The leader of the new BAM party (Bankrupt America Party), has yet to keep one promise he campaigned and has put this nation in more debt in a matter of days than the last administration did in 8 years. Any crow being served should be fed to anyone who voted for this.

Bob: We are all responsible for our own lives. Stop waiting for the government to do something for you and do it yourself. We all put ourselves in this mess with too much spending. If the government gets involved some say too much government….if they don’t some say they don’t care about me. Our president is trying to turn this around but we have to help ourselves and get out and become a dishwasher, anything to help ourselves. There are jobs in health care…it takes a lot of work, I know my husband had been out of work for nine months but he kept pursuing..ideas and leads. He did not expect the government to help him.

It is sooooooooooooo refreshing to have a leader representing us once again!
A man with grace, humility AND intellectual curiosity, that carries the mantra of “listen first”
It is indeed a new day for our great Country and by direct extension the World.
Well done Mr. President!

If only Obama knew what he was doing. He is an utter fraud. He talks like an intelligent man but the fact is, he knows nothing and is the most destructive president ever elected. Turns out that only 35% of Americans now believe in his economic recovery program. We are against his policies 2:1
Posted by: brian | Apr 2, 2009 8:11:51 PM
LOL!@ Brian. You got that poll from Foxnews. Now, the poll did not mentioned that Fox’s poll said 51 pct of Republicans think Obama is doing is the right man for the job. Now, if your 35 % poll is correct, then the other 65 pct of folks believe his recovery plan will has worked thus far. LOL. You do the math. Brian,,,, Foxnews do not employee real journalist, as with Reilly, Beck, and Hannity. None of these guys have a college education and you trust people who rely their emotions rather than facts. Brian, you are a super idiot.

Obama is either wonderful or there is a vast left wing conspiracy to make him seem wonderful. Republicans appear to be in a panic for some way to criticize him that sticks. So far not much luck in make their complaints about him gain any traction. If the economy turns around the GOP will be sunk.

Republicans seem to think that the only thing that people hear is no more taxes…they think they can buy the people as in the past with that same old song. Well we played that song for eight years and where has it gotten us. Unemployment, Scams, foreclosures, health costs soaring..now why would we vote for any more of that?

REPUGLICANS IDEOLOGY LIKE THE ANCIENT DINASOUR, IS YESTERDAYS NEWS, WE DON’T WANT IT, DON’T NEED IT AND IT AIN’T GOOD FOR THE NATION. IF WE WOULD BRING BACK THE DINOSAUR THEY EAT EVERYTHING UP, LIKE PRESIDENT BUSH ATE UP 5.3 TRILLION DOLLARS IN SURPLUS AFTER HE GOT INTO OFFICE, AND LEFT WITH A 11 TRILLION DOLLAR DEFICIT. THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT THE LAST TIME THE BUDGET WAS BALANCED WAS UNDER A DEMOCRAT PRESIDENT (CLINTON). SO, I AM NOT WORRIED ABOUT PRESIDENT OBAMA’S FISCAL POLICIES AFTER 60 DAYS IN OFFICE! THESE SAME ROBOT REPUGLICANS WHO VOTED AND SIGNED OFF ON EVERYTHING BUSH SENT THEM AND GAVE HIM 8 YEARS TO DRIVE THIS COUNTRY TO THE BRINK OF BANKRUPTCY, CAN CRY WOLF ALL THEY WANT! THAT INCLUDES THOSE REPUGLICAN NEOPHYTES WHO COMMENT ON THIS SITE!
