Obama to Cabinet: Show Me Your Cost Cuts

From Sunlen Miller:

In a weekend dominated by foreign relations, President Obama used his Saturday address to refocus on domestic issues, calling for members of his administration to present specific proposals for cutting department and agency budgets.

The president –- who will return from a five-day trip to Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago later this weekend –- will convene his first full Cabinet meeting on Monday at the White House to focus on cost-cutting measures.

“I will ask all of my department and agency heads for specific proposals for cutting their budgets,” the president said in his weekly address.

Obama also praised his former opponent in the presidential race, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., for teaming up to lead cost-cutting efforts in Congress.

“In the coming weeks, I will be announcing the elimination of dozens of government programs shown to be wasteful or ineffective,” the president said, promising to go line-by-line to root out what costs are unnecessary. “In this effort, there will be no sacred cows, and no pet projects.  All across America, families are making hard choices, and it’s time their government did the same.”

“We simply cannot afford to perpetuate a system in Washington where politicians and bureaucrats make decisions behind closed doors, with little accountability for the consequences; where billions are squandered on programs that have outlived their usefulness, or exist solely because of the power of a lobbyist or interest group; and where outdated technology and information systems undermine efficiency, threaten our security, and fail to serve an engaged citizenry,” Obama said, adding that the economy cannot be rebuilt without taxpayers’ confidence that the government is spending their money wisely.

Using the weekly address again as a platform to announce key administration posts, Obama announced CEO management consultant and entrepreneur Jeffrey Zients as the chief performance officer, and Virginia’s Secretary of Technology Aneesh Chopra as the chief technology officer to revamp government operations to ensure spending is done properly.

Zients was chosen after Nancy Killefer withdrew her candidacy for the officer role in early February  following the revelation that she had a $946.69 lien on her property in 2005 for failure to pay taxes.

The president said the two appointees would use technology to improve security, ensure transparency and lower costs to help efficiency in government.

“The goal is to give all Americans a voice in their government and ensure that they know exactly how we’re spending their money –- and can hold us accountable for the results.”

“California and North Carolina in March posted their highest jobless rates in at least three decades, as unemployment increased in all but a handful of states during the month, the Labor Department said Friday.
“California’s unemployment rate jumped to 11.2% in March, while North Carolina rose to 10.8%, the highest for both since the U.S. government began a comprehensive tally of state joblessness in 1976.
“The state-by-state employment figures showed only a few states avoiding the deterioration seen nationwide. Unemployment rose in 46 states during the month, and 12 states plus the District of Columbia posted unemployment rates in March that were significantly higher than the 8.5% nationwide figure the government released earlier this month.”
This one’s on you, Mr. Obama. You own it.

We already had that huge cost cut from Stanley Johnson, agriculture consultant who had a $400,000 contract.
Has Gibbs ever answered Jake about the cost cutting he’s done so far, and if most of it is still made up of ending the wars?

Wgat’s the biggest “pork barrell project” around… The wars in Iran Afghanistan and the covert war going on in IRAN… Just think if we stopped our empire and brought the troops home to protect US from terrorists, guarded OUR borders and kept US safe! And they would even spend their money HERE in the US??? NO, Obama can’t do that, he’s too busy “spreading the goodness of America through the barrell of a gun!!!” Just like Bush II, I, Clinton, Reagan, Carter, JOhnson, JFK, et. al…
But NO Obama doesn’t want to end all of that, he wants to go after earmarks which account for a whopping 1 percent of the federal budget! Nice move Barack, way to put your neck out!
Isn’t the real reason why you hate earmarks is because it is the only Constitutional way for taxpayers to get some of their own money back from Washington, and take care of local problem, through their own local reps.???
Hate that huh, Barack? Oh well, keep doing what your doing… After all Jimmy Carter thinks your doing a great job! (impersonating him!)

Obama leads a country with the strongest army (stronger than all the next 30 countries combined). He knows this and does not need to be a bully, everyone knows who is the big boy in the block.
With that in his back pocket, he will advance the American agenda much further with soft power, Chavez rants suddenly sound hollow in the face of Obama’s grace. We need those Latin American markets for the next round of US manufacturing. There is one country that may not be smiling, China.
That is change I can believe in.

Fascist Hyena- How does he own it? This is not something that happened over night! Thank Boy George for this mess! When this started, did you call out the Repubs who drove this nation into the ditch?

How about he start by cutting his own taxpayer funded expenses, like whimsically flying a chef and 20 of his helpers on a private plane to DC to make pizza that he liked on the campaign trail. Lead by example Mr. President.

Do you really want a budget cut proposal? Resign! The United States simply can not afford you, Mr Obama. Thanks to you, gun sales are at an all time high. You simply can’t keep giving this country away to the world. And for you to apologize to various nations on behalf of the United States of America is totally ludicrous and daft, as well as an insult to anyone who as ever served in the U S military. The practical citizen of this country is already becoming fed up with your vision toward socialism and this new wave on the horizon is going to become a tsunami and throw your sorry butt out of office. Simply put , those with one ounce of common sense are becoming madder than hell and are not going to take it much longer.

“Fascist Hyena- How does he own it?”
Because his announced plans for taxation give employers very little incentive to hire, and much incentive to lay people off. It’s his problem now, and he’s made it significantly worse.

“With that in his back pocket, he will advance the American agenda much further with soft power…”
A lot of good that did in getting Europeans to imitate his “stimulus” folly, or in getting them to provide further combat troops in Afghanistan. A lot of good it has done him in putting a halt to North Korea’s nuclear program, and ditto Iran’s. And a lot of good it has done him in getting the imprisoned American journalist out of the hellhole she’s in in Iran.
But hey, he’s sure “graceful.”

This from the man who claimed a new era of “resonsibility” had come to Washington after he announced the deficit this year will be at least 1.75 TRILLION dollars and might be as high as 2 TRILLION dollar according to the CBO.
This from a man that has proposed 3.6 TRILLION dollars in new spending (his own numbers).
This from a man that just spend 800 BILLION dollars on a stimulus plan that was full of pork and special interest give-aways.
This from a man that jets around on Air Force One spending tens of thousands of dollars in fuel while working families are struggling to get by.
Obama is Carter. When the public has to begin to pay for these policies they are going to be upset to say the least.

Budget Deficit
2000 2,025.5 1,789.2 86.4
2001 1,991.4 1,863.2 -32.4
2002 1,853.4 2,011.2 -317.4
2003 1,782.5 2,160.1 -538.4
2004 1,880.3 2,293.0 -568.0
2005 2,153.9 2,472.2 -493.6
2006 2,407.3 2,655.4 -434.5
2007 2,568.2 2,728.9 -342.2
2008 2,524.3 2,982.9 -641.8
Combined, Obama’s deficit in 2009 and 2010 will be greater than the deficit that Bush ran up in 8 years (see CBO number above). People were right to be mad at Bush for such reckless spending and even more so with Obama’s full fledge cave-in to bloated government.
This is simply unsustainable. Obama has effectively sealed our fate – we will see our nation go bankrupt and our currency become worthless.

expensive pet projects, how about this “cap and trade” nonsense that is as stupid as buying medieval indulgences to commit sin; that will be rife with fraud and double-dipping. Or in the bigger picture, an agenda including declaring a gas absolutely essential to life on this planet as a “pollutant” because of religious ideology masked as science.

Posted by: RalphWSiegler | April 18, 2009, 12:51 pm 12:51 pm

One more set of number that illustrate the madness of Obama’s spending:
Interest fiscal year 2009 thru February 148,762
Interest same period 2008 198,518
Deficit fiscal year 2009 thru February 764,525
Deficit same period 2008 264,541
Receipts fiscal year 2009 thru February 860,877
Receipts same period 2008 967,153
Outlays fiscal year 2009 thru February 1,625,402
Outlays same period 2008 1,231,694
Gold assets in March 11,041
Icome to the federal government is down significantly and spending has skyrocketed. Obama has produced a 764 Billion dollar deficit so far this year and as previously noted, the CBO believes it might go as high as 2.1 TRILLION dollars.
How can anyone support this? Unfortunately, the new spending under Obama has many long-term programs that will only magnify the deficit in coming years. George Will has rightly pointed out that much of the welfare reform that was passed over the past two decades was undone in the Obama stimulus plan. All of this combined is simply staggering when you consider the long term implications for our families and future generations.

Posted by: Oonogil | April 18, 2009, 1:03 pm 1:03 pm

this is raw politics and not serious. He signed the bill with all the pork then talks about wasteful spending? He creates a debt that will, along with other entitlements, consume 80% of the federal budget, and he talks about fiscal responsibility? This speech was a response to the protests but pure rhetoric. Obama is destroying the country’s economics long term.

Posted by: brian | April 18, 2009, 1:06 pm 1:06 pm

Obama’s budget proposal in itself demonstrates that he has no fiscal restraint. Obama will be kicked out of office along with many of his fellow Democrats if he continues on his current course.

If you do, explain why you support this.

The next Obama promise to fall will be on taxes. There is already a proposal to raise taxes on everyone making more than $104,000. That number will go lower and lower because there simply are not enough people making that much money to fund trillion dollar deficits. Sooner or later taxes will need to be raised across the board or the Obama spending will need to be undone. We simply cannot afford it.

Our first affirmative action president is acting like a teenager that just got her first credit card. He has gotten himself in dangerous situation because he has no self control when it comes to spending. Unfortunately, his irresponsibility threatens the future economic security for all of us.

I agree with sngeorgia! Keep working and praying with God as your captain Mr. President. When God take you to it, HE will take you through it!!! Keep looking to the mark of the high calling of God, Mr. President!!! No matter what is said and what it look like, people, understand this, “GOD HAS CALLED THIS UNION, IT IS TIME FOR A CHANGE!!!” When prayer was in the school and the Bible was being practiced, i.e., spare not the rod, spoil not the child! Look at our children, everyday, killing-destruction-children against parents-parents against children-siblings against each other…..it is time that we “Get back to the Basics”.
He who is without sin cast the first stone. We just celebrated the “Easter Season”. We are aware, I hope that the reason for the season is “JESUS”!!! Not colored eggs, candy shaped like eggs, bunnies, and baby chicks, baskets, and special activities to find the hidden treasure. Let’s face it, if we don’t turn around, change our minds, follow THE CREATOR, read our Bible, … basically GET BACK TO BIBLE BASICS and follow the “rule book” for life.
TO GOD BE THE GLORY!!!

Trent, are you telling me that you are not one bit concerned with trillion dollar deficits? The congressional budget office has projected that Obama’s budget will create permanent trillin dollar deficits. Not one bit of concern over this? Do you not realize what this will mean to hard working Amercians as they try to earn a living and to provide food for their families? You sound like you are blinded by your ideology; are you really willing to mortgage our future and in all likelihood cause an economic collapse just because you support Obama’s liberal social stances?

Posted by: James | April 18, 2009, 1:44 pm 1:44 pm

For Obama to talk about fiscal restraint while doubling the deficit and kicking of trillions in expenditures is obscene. I do not think you could find a more textbook case of propaganda. Clearly this administration is not afraid to work the press, saying one thing while doing precisely the opposite.

It’s not spending, it’s wasteful spending that everyone is up in arms about. Good to see that he is thinking of it now, but honestly, the last budget and the stimulus was where he should have started.

There are those in America (some on this blog) that would suggest Obama is wrong on everything he does, no matter what it is. These are the people that will ultimatley destroy our country. at some point in time we have to realize that what we have been doing for the last 200 years is not working.I don’t know for sure that Obama is right any more than you do but we have to do something different. Where were all you nay sayers when GWB was running this country into the ground. Didn’t hear all this negativity them.

You know what Obama should cut–aid to those insolvent banks. But apparently they ARE sacred cows. He can cut from now until doomsday. It will never get close to the trillions of taxpayer money the Fed and Treasury have doled out to AIG, Goldman Sachs, BOA, Citicorp who continue to rape the public while cashing in on free money from the taxpayer. And we are sheep, going quietly to slaughter. One thing I can say about France–no way, Jose would this ever happen there. The people wouldn’t allow it.

President Obama can’t walk the walk and talk the talk so I’ll believe it when I see the cost cut across the board. He can’t do it because to many Democrates will come unglued if he does. Wonder what Gen. Colin Powell think of Mr. Obama now

Posted by: metro | April 18, 2009, 2:35 pm 2:35 pm

It’s the taxes which will have to be drastically raised just to pay the interest on the government debt. At the current rate of spending (which has significantly increased under the present administration) our tax revenue will pay for nothing other than the interest on the debt owed by the government. In the first year that the debt was recorded (1789) the debt was $75,463,476.00 and when Barack Obama took office (January 19 2009) it was $10,628,881,485,510.00 and as of today it is $11,218,863,034,278.00. This is an increase of $589,981,548,768.00 since this administration took over and if this rate of spending is continued the debt at the end of one year in office will be approximately $13,578,789,000,000.00 and at the end of four years in office will be approximately $20,658,569,000,000.00. This is debt that the country does not have the money to repay anywhere in the near future. Looking at history James Madison, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan, Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford Hayes, Chester Arthur, Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover accomplished the one thing that no administration since 1933 has accomplished and that is to reduce the government debt while in office. All other Presidents have increased the government debt during their term of office. Who had the biggest change you ask? In order of magnitude they are:
1. Abraham Lincoln (2,959% increase, Civil War years)
2. Martin Van Buren (1,558% increase, Andrew Jackson had reduced the debt by over 99% during his preceding terms)
3. Franklin D. Roosevelt (1,147% increase, WW II)
4. Woodrow Wilson (822% increase)
5. James Polk (395% increase)
6. James Buchanan (315% increase)
7. Ronald Reagan (286% increase)
8. James Madison (216% increase)
9. George W. Bush (185% increase
10. Gerald Ford (147% increase)
This is the top 10 so the next question to answer is where did William Clinton rank among the Presidents who had an increase in the government debt during their time in office? William Clinton had an increase of 136% in office which ranked as number 13 (not a ranking to be proud of). Where would Barack Obama rank if his administration continues the rate of spending we have experienced to date? Barack Obama at the current rate of spending would have an increase of the federal debt to the tune of $194% which would rank him as number 9 on the list of top ten ahead of George W. Bush.

Solution to economic catastrophy: Raise the minimum wage to no less than 10 dollars an hour. Free Medical and University for all just like its done in Europe. How many children are living in poverty that are gifted? Future Einsteins that will be grateful to say that their country gave them the opportunity to study the career of their choice, and they will give the best of their knowledge back to help humanity. Look at a picture of planet Earth from space, we are mere specks on a blue globe floating in nothingness. Let us be nicer, kinder, patient with everyone no matter race, color or creed. Your neighbors problem today might be your problem tomorrow. Think people! We are all human beings. Stop arguing and lets work together for the good of all.

The tea parties exemplify a minority that wanted their voice heard. It was heard but they are not the majority and must contend with assimilation which has been difficult. Republican base is and continues to lose power and is seen to the Libertarians and other parties. We are continually acculturating this wonderful country and unfortunately some wish not to move forward but remain what once was. Put it simply times are changing and if you don’t like it, you have the power of the vote and unfortunately for some it means being outnumbered. As people have said a sizeable MINORITY of people voted for McCain, however, he lost and our President had won the MAJORITY of vote both in sheer people numbers and the electoral college. He has been our president for 100 days and is working diligently and will continue to do so and as I who voted for Kerry in 2004 I was one of the sizeable MINORITY who had I placed my ballot for. So as with a sizeable minority of this country, you are entitled to have your voice heard but are not entitled to impose upon the majority your will.

The stupidity of Bush does not give Obama the excuse to be even worse. While I would applaud his efforts to cut costs, it seems pretty superficial, and I expect him to cut a few billion where he spends trillions. Cutting 100 Billion is nothing if you spend 20 times that.

I am really tired of hearing about how Obama inherited all of our economic problems. No he didn’t inherit them, he spent two years and hundreds of millions of dollars asking the country to put him in charge of them. Or was he so naïve that he thought the only problem that would come across his desk was the war in Iraq? Every president since Adams has had to deal with some of the problems left over from the previous administration but all of former presidents combined haven’t whined as much about it as Obama.

Trent has said that he supports the trillion dollar deficits that Obama has proposed. Well, are you ready to pay your part? Your bill just for the first three years, using CBO figures, comes to $16,700. If you have a wife, or husband, or kids, then you need to pony up $16,700 for each of them as well.
When can we expect your check? I will personally drive it to Washington and give it to Mr. Obama if you would like. On the other hand, if you are not willing to fork over the money then I would humbly ask you to be quite.

Obama is doing great. Some of the “right wing exremist” that just want everything to stay the way it is or want to live in the past are not to happy but so what. The replublican party still is more interested in smearing everything the other guy does instead of talking about what they can do for America’s and the worlds future. Thet will probably have to loose more elections before they reliaze that the USA is moving towards a brighter tomorrow with better relations around the globe. Where law and policy isnt made on old right wing closed minded religous ideals. Where deplomacy is now a first resort instead of the last resort as practiced by Bush. We are comming in to a new age where same sex marriage will be accepted, where we will become equal partners instead of wanting to dominate relationships with other countries. Where relationships with Cuba and other countries we have isolated from us will have a new beginning. Can any republican acually picture the future as a world or country living with their old ideas and beliefs? I dont think so. They may want to keep everything white and christian but that isnt the real world anymore.
Go for it Obama as you make this Ind. and past republican proud I cast my vote for you. Time for a better, peaceful tomorrow.

Posted by: Taylor | April 18, 2009, 2:58 pm 2:58 pm

If only 40% of adults pay taxes then it’s obvious where the burden is falling. Thank goodness we even have rich people to foot the bill otherwise the taxpaying middle class will fold. Instead of an energy footprint how about we have a taxuser footprint that measures how much you produce vs. use of govt services.

The President was smart to not decrease spending while heading into s deep recession. And, he’s wise to cut spending once we’re on the mend. It feels great to have a real leader as President.

Trent, Obama’s approval rating has not been at 69% since his inauguration. His current RCP average is 60.4, which is rather average for a new president during the first 100 days. The spread between Republican and Democratic party identification has fallen from an RCP average of 7.2% during the election to 2.8% today. Obama’s approval rating according to Rasmussen Reports, which is usually cited by politicians is at 55%, again a little low for a new president.
Obama has squandered the goodwill he gained during the election. If his economic policies continue to produce trillion dollar deficits he will be a one term president like Carter.

HP Lovecraft–careful there, your expensive education is showing. People who are achievers and earn money are the ones that pay taxes and keep the country afloat. Try it sometime.

Posted by: Hillary C | April 18, 2009, 3:08 pm 3:08 pm

Many parts of government need cutting. The National Education Assoc. eats up money for bureaucrats and education specialists, all for dubious benefits inside the classroom. As the NEA grows, the problems with American public education also grow.
The EPA budget also should be closely scrutinized for expenditures that fall outside the boundaries of legitimate government interference.
Tremendous savings could be accrued by putting Congress’s spending under a microscope. Congressional staffs are highly paid, and some members have staffs in the hundreds.
Separate House and Senate committees each have their own staff. The numbers are enormous, and anyone who has worked in Washington knows you could get rid of half of them and no one would know the difference. You could also cut out half of Congress’ redundant and byzantine committee and subcommittee structure and not notice an iota of change in the country. These are empire-building and rice bowl opportunities for individual members we shouldn’t be paying for.
Congress itself should not be a sacred cow when it comes to budget cutting. Expense accounts, boondoggles and overseas trips should all be out on the table.

Do we really need bullet trains. We spent a fortune on a rail service and nobody even uses it becuase it’s a pain in the ***. Every time theres a storm it shuts down so you have to drive during bad weather.

Obama has an approval rating hovering over 60 percent and his tax plan has an approval rating of 72 percent. Bye Tea party that just turned out to be a FOX, Hannity, Newt promotion and still shows the hate filled Republicans are grasping and still believe a way to win is to bash the other guy. They just do not learn.
Those complaining that their kids will have to pay back dept all I can say is there are more important things that your kids will have to worry about. Energy, international relationships, over population and ofcourse values handed down by you. My parents wanted a better world for me. I remember when growing up man helped his fellow man. People cared about a stranger. Now instead of a wave hello driving down the road you get a middle finger if not a gun pointed at you. People speed and have no respect for others safety. The only time they are not speeding is when they are tailgating putting everyones life in danger. We have kids with guns, in gangs, and on and on. Where did the values in America go and all you can do is worry about a Gov dept left to them. Priorities parents. Teach them to treat others as they would want to be treated. That has more value than anything. We are a country that uses 25 percent of the worlds resources and only produces 5 percent. You better care waht other coutries think about us because we cant support ourselves. We use to build quality and offer quality customer service. We build junk now and wonder why we buy from Japan or Korea. Call customer service and speak to a barely english speaking Indian. That is what is wrong with todays America and what your kids will have to worry about.
Obama was handed a mess on all fronts and is doing a great job multi tasking in trying to clean it up while moving us for better tomorrow. To bad some just want to bash him, call him names, and close their hearts and minds to any new ideas. Hannity, Rush, Savage are a thought and idea of the past. The more the preach hate the bigger the hole dug by their party. If Republicans would have the foresite to see what tomorrow will require and open their minds to a more liberal universe they may beable to come back a powerful party again. Now they are slowly dying and will die if they dont change their ideals and way of doing things.

He has people in “his” administration who didn’t pay their taxes, who call American cowards and one day Obama states the Great Depression is upon us and then the next week we should buy stocks. Wake Up America- In response to your posts I have to say that people like you amaze me. Where was the outrage when Bush was cutting taxes 3 times during a war and starting a hugh Medicare program without any clue as to how to pay for it? Where was the outrage when we went to war because of a downright lie by Bush and Cheney? Where was the outrage over 4,000 dead Americans and triple that number of poor people in Iraq? Obama is doing the absolute right thing. He is stimulating the economy and at the same time cutting spending in other areas. If Bush would have raised taxes like he should have to pay for the war and monitored the financial system the way he should have – we would not owe what we do now. Where was the outrage then? Happy teabaging to you.

Bush’s tax cuts kept us from plummeting into a deep recession after 9/11. He kept us prosperous and helped moved most of the world into prosperity. Want to cut spending, first place to go is all entitlement programs. If you are on an entitlement program then you should be subject to random drug testing, fail the test and you are off of the entitlement program. It sounds tough but alot of us with jobs are subject to the same testing if we want to work. Why should it be different for those receiving our tax money?

James III – “Bush’s tax cuts kept us from plummeting into a deep recession after 9/11.” —————————–
Is that why he told us to go shopping instead of buy war bonds? Bush raised the National Debt by the largest percentage and real dollar value of any U.S. President in history. Sounds like a problem to me. History shows that once fiscal discipline erodes on the tax side of the budget, it tends to erode on the spending side, too. And that is what happened. Common sense says you have to raise money when you spend money. Bush was totally irresponsible because his solution, like many Americans, was to spend what you want; borrow what you need and worry about it tomorrow.

Posted by: Olivia | April 18, 2009, 4:14 pm 4:14 pm

This is a joke. So Obama doubles Bush’s already disgraceful deficits and keeps us in massive deficits for the next decade – and then has the audacity to say he will cut wasteful spending. Maybe if he wasn’t already planning to expand federal spending or the power of the federal government over the people. We need to slow federal spending and cut it if possible.

Posted by: Joe C. | April 18, 2009, 4:18 pm 4:18 pm

incredible, somebody who signed a pork laden bill and whose budget will create so much debt that 80% of the government’s budget will be interest on the debt and entitlements, even talking about being fiscally responsible. It is an absolute joke and he is doing it because he fears the growth of the tea parties. He knows there is a movement growing and he is trying to look responsible. We all know the reality is Obama is a totally irresponsible spender bent on more federal government power.

I don’t think he’s listening, but he wants people to think he is so he can do what he wants anyway. After all, as he said himself, he won. %3,000,000 voted against him, but he has a mandate.

The Chinese are quietly transferring to copper and other precious metals as a reserve instead of the US dollar. They obvioulsy know what anyone can figure out; the huge deficits coming out of the Obama administration are going to severely weaken the dollar. What is Obama going to do when he can’t find enough fools to invest in government bonds? Will he moderate spending? Not likely, more likely is that he will simply print the money and allow inflation to run wild. This man clearly does not have a clue. Obama has said to hold him accountable – that is one statement he has made that I can agree with.

Every American now owes $37,000 in federal debt. If Obama continues with his current spending plan those deficits will add another $16,000 to the amount that each man woman, and child in America owes. No nation can sustain that kind of debt.
Unfortunately, it gets worse. If you include federal government entitlements the amount that each American man, woman, and child owes is $216,700!!!
Do you realize what out of control government spending has done to our childrens future? The fact that anyone supports this continued assault on future generations is despicable.

Our President really confuses me. What plan is he talking about now? I thought he stressed “saving or creating” jobs to garner support for his plans. A huge spending stimulus package and submitting a budget that would knock your socks off later, he’s now saying he’s going to eliminate wasteful programs? Excuse me, but doesn’t that translate into lost jobs, lost revenue, and putting more on the entitlement rolls? Can someone explain the President’s theory? I can’t help but think he can’t figure out which side of the fence he wants to sit on, so he continually says 2 different things at the same time. It looks like he’s on one side, but might be really on the other and no-one knows which it is. Thanks!

All you people on the left need to understand the bill of rights. Let me give it to you in terms that you should be able to understand.
“We the sensible people of the United States, in an attempt to help everyone get along, restore some semblance of justice, avoid more riots, keep our nation safe, promote positive behavior, and secure the blessings of debt-free liberty to ourselves and our great-great-great-grandchildren, hereby try one more time to ordain and establish some common sense guidelines for the terminally whiny, guilt ridden, delusional, and others. We hold these truths to be self evident: that a whole lot of people are confused by the Bill of Rights and are so dim they require a Bill of NON-Rights.”
ARTICLE I: You do not have the right to a new car, big screen TV, or any other form of wealth. More power to you if you can legally acquire them, but no one is guaranteeing anything.
ARTICLE II: You do not have the right to never be offended. This country is based on freedom, and that means freedom for everyone — not just you! You may leave the room, turn the channel, express a different opinion, etc; but the world is full of idiots, and probably always will be.
ARTICLE III: You do not have the right to be free from harm. If you stick a screwdriver in your eye, learn to be more careful; do not expect the tool manufacturer to make you and all your relatives independently wealthy.
ARTICLE IV: You do not have the right to free food and housing. Americans are the most charitable people to be found, and will gladly help anyone in need, but we are quickly growing weary of subsidizing generation after generation of professional couch potatoes who achieve nothing more than the creation of another generation of professional couch potatoes ..
ARTICLE V: You do not have the right to free health care. That would be nice, but from the looks of public housing, we’re just not interested in public health care.
ARTICLE VI: You do not have the right to physically harm other people. If you kidnap, rape, intentionally maim, or kill someone, don’t be surprised if the rest of us want to see you fry in the electric chair.
ARTICLE VII: You do not have the right to the possessions of others. If you rob, cheat, or coerce away the goods or services of other citizens, don’t be surprised if the rest of us get together and lock you away in a place where you still won’t have the right to a big screen color TV or a life of leisure.
ARTICLE VIII: You do not have the right to a job. All of us sure want you to have a job, and will gladly help you along in hard times, but we expect you to take advantage of the opportunities of education and vocational training laid before you to make yourself useful. (AMEN!)
ARTICLE IX: You do not have the right to happiness. Being an American means that you have the right to PURSUE happiness, which by the way, is a lot easier if you are unencumbered by an over abundance of idiotic laws created by those of you who were confused by the Bill of Rights.
ARTICLE X: This is an English speaking country. We don’t care where you are from, English is our language. Learn it or go back to wherever you came from! (Lastly….)
ARTICLE XI: You do not have the right to change our country’s history or heritage. This country was founded on the belief in one true God. And yet, you are given the freedom to believe in any religion, any faith, or no faith at all; with no fear of persecution. The phrase IN GOD WE TRUST is part of our heritage and history, and if you are uncomfortable with it, TOUGH!

The problem with the obama plan similar to the Jimmy Carter plan is that we live in a global economy. If you’re going to tax the he11 out of corp. they leave. If you’re going to tax the he11 out of the boomers they’ll sell everything and be the gypsy nomads they truly want to be. If there’s no incentive to owning anything or taking on the risk of business than the left leaning naive obama will get the same stagflation Jimmy Carter got all in the name of being ashamed of his country.

Wow, how soon we forget. The debt has always been pushed forward, WWII wasn’t paid off until the mid 70′s and the current fiscal situation was begun a decade ago when the GOP controlled congress voted to deregulate the financial industry after the S&L scandals and Enron. The trillion plus spent directly and indirectly on the made up war in Iraq certainly contributed to the current situation, but of course it is all Obama’s fault.
He cuts taxes the fanatics complain, he repeals tax cuts for the individuals and businesses that needed them least and the fanatics complain, he increases spending in order to provide jobs and support industry and the fanatics complain, now he is cutting government spending, the supposed core value of the conservative party and still you complain. It is a huge cr*p sandwich, we are all going to have to take a bite because we let it happen, all of us. We finally have a leader who is ready to do more than increase the bottom line of the fortune 500, I’m very ok with that.

If you want to see where Obama’s policies will lead us then watch New York city. They have just levied huge tax increases on the rich, businesses, and the things that everyday Americans purchase. We are about to see a flight out of New York. Businesses will not stay in a city that does not allow success and in fact actvely punishes it. Look for a lot of moving vans leaving the city headed to the south and middle America. When Obama’s policies cause the same failure on a national level I am afraid we will see anger, violence, and civil unrest. Americans simply will no longer put up with economic pain, especially economic pain caused by higher taxes.

I’ll take 2 trillion in investment that pays for itself in 10 years and that produces jobs, innovation and opens the markets than over a trillion+ spent, some billions of which just fell into the pockets of Iraqi officials, 6000 dead, and a less stable region of the world than when we found it and has provided 0 revenue for little else than Haliburtion, that pays no taxes on said revenue.

Lois, no matter how you try to rationalize a 2 trillion dollar deficit it will sound hollow.
Just so you can understand how big that deficit is, here is the number:
2,000,000,000,000
That is $6700 for every man, woman, and child in America. Can you afford to send that much EXTRA money to Mr. Obama? When can the government expect your check? The CBO has projected that Obama’s policies will add another 1.5 trillion dollars to the debt next year and 1 trillion every year after that for eight years. This is what you support? Again, if you do support this I ask you to lead by sending your check to Washington. If you are that excited about Obama’s policies how about sending a check in for your neighbors as well?

Obama and the idiots in Congress need to read the Constitution, especially the 10th ammendment “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” In simple terms anything not expressly granted to the Federal government is reserved for the States or the People. Although this amendment is very liberally interpreted, it is one of the tenets of the Constitution. This amendment is also known as the States’ Rights Amendment.
The way Congress is going they are stepping allover States Rights in clear violation of the constitution.

Frieda “Thank god for the rich people. They’re the only ones paying enough taxes to keep this boat afloat. Without them we’re all doomed. Plus the tickle down is exactly what their cash offers those of us with small businesses.”
Unfortunately, there are not as many rich people as there used to be. If you were to take all the income from those making over $200,000 a year you would only collect 1.3 trillion. Obama has submitted a budget that calls for 3.6 trillion in spending. Now, where do you suppose he will need to make up the nearly 2.9 trillion that will still need to be brought in through taxes, even after soaking the rich?
If you make between 29k and 70k then you are part of the group that brings in the bulk of the income. You too will have the, aah, pleasure of supporting Mr. Obama’s taxes one way or another. Obama doesn’t have the honesty to just raise your income tax to fund his spending schemes but I would suspect you will see higher taxes on everything you buy, transport, inherit, donate, license, and in any other way spend money. Higher fees for government services? Absolutely. Enjoy…

“I’ll take 2 trillion in investment that pays for itself in 10 years and that produces jobs, innovation and opens the markets…”
It’s foolish to think the government will achieve these goals. It simply doesn’t jibe with history.
It was the private sector, not government-jobs programs like those under the New Deal, that transformed America into a phenomenally prosperous economy. Before the Great Depression, the Roaring Twenties had prosperity and all-time low unemployment without the government-created jobs programs.
During the Depression, increasing the number of government jobs did nothing to revive the private sector that pays all the bills, in large part because of the depressing effect of the taxes required to pay for government jobs.
Obama’s version of prosperity involves a huge, oppressive federal government that crowds out the private sector. This will only choke innovation and cause even greater unemployment because the jobs aren’t self-sustaining. Since it has taxing authority, the federal government has no incentive to be efficient. When it loses money, it simply increases taxes. Inefficient private sector companies fail (as they should). Government only grows and taxes us to make up for its failures.
The Soviet Union ONLY had government jobs. It still collapsed.
My prediction: Much of the $2 trillion (which is debt, incidentally) will be wasted, the costs will be much higher than projected, the “investment” will not pay for itself in 10 years, and the job estimates are way too optimistic and more temporary in nature. History is on my side.

“We finally have a leader who is ready to do more than increase the bottom line of the fortune 500, I’m very ok with that.”
Let’s see. I guess if Obama reduces the bottom line of the fortune 500 they will then create jobs. And the economy will greatly improve when all businesses make close to zero or post a loss.
Boy did I have it wrong all these years!

We’ve seen an explosion of government spending and a whole lot of new government jobs.
What happens when the non-government job sector and individuals can no longer pay for these expenditures?
If buying 17,000 new cars to give to gov employees is a good idea, why not give everyone a new car? Why stop at 17,000?
Why not build 17,000 gov employees a new house and help the construction industry too? Again, why not build a new house for ALL gov employees ?

The travesty of this situation is that it’s not a joke as so many have posted. Once again he’s politicking. The federal budget has already been astronomically increased, now he’ll make cuts that amount to probably less than 1% of the new budget and the libs will think he’s the greatest thing ever. Who was it that was accused of “fuzzy math”? But not to worry. The money is being invested, not spent. We’ll get it all back. I wish I could be proud of my country again. The tea parties have only just begun.

Kent said “conservatives want lower taxes and Obama gives 95 percent of Americans lower taxes, conservatives complain about government spending and Obama directs his cabinet to identify savings — still the poor loosers rant”
Kent, you do realize that the $13 a week tax cut that Obama gave just a few months ago was rescinded in the 2009 budget plan?
Maybe you can go to your leftwing blog, posing as an “economic comparison expert”, and make yourself feel better about the 2 trillion dollar debt that Obama will run up this year. Maybe they will give you a miniture statue of keynes that you can snuggle with at night.

When I look at my children and think about what these huge deficits are going to do to their future it makes me mad. Still, the lefties who support Obama’s social beliefs are willing to destroy our economy through deficit spending the likes of which we have neve seen before. Two trillion dollars people! In a single year.

Posted by: Jenny | April 18, 2009, 9:34 pm 9:34 pm

Maybe it would help if Obama stopped thinking of himself as the guy who must solve all the world’s problems. He’s the latest of a long line of presidents. That’s all. After him there will be more presidents and more problems to be solved. In fact every time changes are made to solve problems they only produce new problems. As our national debt grows, solving problems becomes more and more difficult because all the government’s income is obligated. There’s no money to spend or invest. This administration is obligating more than the people have to give or ever will have to give.

Posted by: mmonroeliveson | April 18, 2009, 9:38 pm 9:38 pm

“This administration is obligating more than the people have to give or ever will have to give”
Right on…The next damaging blow we face is inflation. When the government spends so freely from borrowed sources it is inevitable that inflation will begin to rapidly climb. When the federal government is servicing 11 trillion dollars of debt, soon to be 13 trillion, an increase in the interest rate needed to fund that debt could be devastating. Onother terrorist attack on top of that and our economy will collapse. Obama just does not seem to have a clue. He has not modified his plans at all even though he knows of these risks. It’s like he wants the economy to collapse completely.

The Debt Fairy?
No, we the people will pay it back, by paying more taxes and Inflation, arent we already paying double for the banks bailout? yes we are, we are paying higher interest rates and bank fees, while these bailed out banks are now reporting profits.
Don’t be too quick to put Obama on a pedastal, it will be a harder fall for him when he fails.

How the banks are restructuring their books so that investors will not be scared off and not buy up their toxic assets.
How the unemployment rate is surging past 10 percent in most states and even more economists are saying that we are not even close to being out of the woods yet.

In the interest of public perspective here are some stats that NPR, an unbiased news reporting station, has put out over the last several months. One trillion one dollar bills would occupy as much space as 103 Nemitz class aircraft carriers. Housing one trillion goldfish would require enough water to fill over 1000 pro football stadiums. The light put off by 4.3 billion fireflies would equal the light emitted by our sun. therefore, one trillion fireflies would give off as much light as nearly 250 of our suns. The annual GNP (Gross National Product)of all the US is only slightly larger than our current national debt. Footnote: This nation’s GNP yields less than a 5% profit, so our current indebtedness equals about 20 years worth of the profit earned on all the goods produced the US annually. Do you still think deficit spending to the tune of trillions of dollars annually is going to make life better for us and future generations? Is the US getting stronger?

Posted by: mmonroeliveson | April 19, 2009, 12:47 pm 12:47 pm

Olivia – Since it is data taken from an official government website I figured that anyone could find it. If you google government debt you will be lead to an area where the data can be found on these two pages

It sounds to me like everyone is right. The percentages quoted by Sandcrab1612 are no doubt right and the fact that Bush left this biggest deficit is also right. One is percentages and one is actual dollars.

As a society we should ask the simple question of citizens; are you a contributor or producer or are you a continual drain and liability on society? Many not including the elderly, retired and disabled are simply a burden and will always be a burden and have absolutely no desire to contribute. What to do with them?

Jake, it’s now Monday morning. After waiting with baited breath for the cost savings inputs from their budgets to be made by our department heads, I guess we can all exhale……the numbers I am hearing seem to make the process another meaningless one to the taxpayer…of course, they will be the ones to suffer if something can be cut ‘cuz perish the thought if we should ask the leader of our Executive branch just how much has been added to his own staffing costs so far in the first 100 days………including a bunch of “behavioral economists” figuring out the best ways to get folks to do what they want…..I guess they will attempt to save paper in the West Wing by getting Congress to ok whatever it is that Obama has in mind for his Health Plan as no one has seen a P-L-A-N
yet. (Isn’t it fun to jam big ticket items through the legislative branch ( the one which “speaks for the people” down on the Potomac…..the beat goes on!

I can only speak from experience on the state level. To be sure, not everyone agrees with borrowing to stimulate the economy, but I live in Oregon, a state that’s used this strategy during the last 2 economic downturns, and it worked.
Our state issued bonds (borrowed) to create jobs and we also opened wider eligibility for federal food stamps. The money circulated throughout the state, helping build jobs. We rebounded, attracted new employers like INTEL, and even built a rainy day fund – this growth has not compensated for ALL the borrowing, but it has not broken the backs of our children either. We don’t even have a state sales tax and car licenses are a flat fee of around $20 bucks.
It is true that borrowing can be a double edge sword. In the past Oregon was forced to borrow to build new prisons due to tougher sentencing laws and one year our legislators even borrowed to balance its budget. IMO, that’s the kind of borrowing that backed California into a serious deficit.
Oregon’s economy is also heavily dependent on forest products, so the housing bust hit us hard. With unemployment over 12%, Oregon has once again borrowed to help our economy while we wait for federal stimulus money. We already started spending this month for every local County’s economy on infrastructure projects to eventually have 3,000 people working and off unemployment.
The key focus has to be long term jobs. We’ll be using upcoming federal money to help build healthy new tax payers by investing in school districts, summer jobs for low-income teens, training and community college scholarships.
Building healthy new jobs helped pay down borrowing in the past. Now, I don’t agree with everything our President has advocated, but think it is worth stepping outside failed patterns to discover whether or not certain proposals have value.
I’ve learned it’s not clear cut Republican OR Democratic policies that work. And tax cuts are not the only solution when kids go hungry today and we need to build new jobs for tomorrow’s taxpayers.

Posted by: idahogirl | April 20, 2009, 2:01 pm 2:01 pm

idahogirl– interesting post.. first, no one including conservatives are opposed to all infrastructure spending, we just don’t believe that it is the right “remedy” to bail a sinking ship. You mentioned that Oregon used infra spending to stimulate their economy.. but since the tax cuts were federal, how can you be sure that it was the state infra spending and not the tax cuts that improved your economy? Interesting that your economy has been using infrastructure spending along with the tax cuts coming from the fed and yet your unemployment is still above the average for the nation (who only had the benefit of the tax cuts). If the additional spending was so beneficial, then why didn’t Oregon who utilized both the spending AND got breaks from tax cuts not have an even MORE robust economy than the rest of the country??
Most of the spending you mentioned is temporary at best (as with most stimulus spending) could it be that your poor employment (12%) is due to the fact that most of the jobs created by spending are temporary and that the jobs created by tax cuts are permanent.

Posted by: arkie vet | April 20, 2009, 3:23 pm 3:23 pm

idahogirl; Some infrastructure spending is not only beneficial, but wise. The states should maintain what they’ve built as should the federal gov’t. The purpose is to deter the high costs of completely rebvuilding as opposed to maintaining what is already in place. There’s also need for improvements of infrastructure, but you missed my point. This administration is going into deep debt. We’re talking TRILLIONS of dollars we don’t have that are being spent. Even with a healthy economy which we don’t have, every penny earned by every American and every American business for the next twenty years is currently obligated to our creditors. I’m questioning the wisdom as well as the math. A bullheaded plunge into doing “what’s right” and “what’s been promised” when we are broke doesn’t seem like level headed leadership to me. Sorry Obama inherited a global recession, but he did. More mismanagement of the US dollar won’t make things better. Now is not the time for pursuit of his ambitions or fulfillment of his campaign promises at the expense of already overstressed taxpayers. As it has always been, there’s a time to spend and a time to tighten the belt. In my opinion growing the government will only lead to more debt. Besides, the only thing the federal government has ever done well is provide national defense. They should concentrate on what they do well and leave the rest to the states.
