Obama’s Press Conference

The questions at tonight’s 100 Days press conference covered the waterfront — everything from the state secrets act to the unemployment rate among African American men to securing Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal — and President Obama demonstrated that he was fully on top of his brief.  His energy may have been a little low at the top, but the president picked up steam over the course of the hour and turned just about every answer to his core themes:  My administration inherited a mess.  We’re starting to clean it up.  What you don’t like is not my fault.   And above all, be patient.  BEST EXCHANGE — Jeff Zeleny scored the best question of the night when he asked Obama to say
what has "surprised…enchanted…troubled…and humbled" him most in these first 100 days.  It would have been easy to brush off with a few vague generalities.  But Obama decided to play along in a mini-masterpiece of improvisational message-making.  Taking each idea in turn, the President managed to praise the military with misty-eyes, slam bankers with a laugh, remind people that he was dealt a bad hand, and make a cheerful plea for persistence.    BIGGEST PUNTS — Obama made it pretty clear that he was in no hurry to tackle immigration reform
or to reinforce Roe v. Wade with the "Freedom of Choice" Act.   That may get him some angry phone calls from NARAL and the Hispanic Caucus, but most voters will buy his candid explanation: I’ve got plenty else to worry about right now.  DAMAGE CONTROL — In our latest ABC News/Washington Post poll, the only Obama agenda item that doesn’t get majority support  is the bailout of the Big 3 automakers.  No wonder the president was so sensitive to any suggestion that he relished his role as shareholder-in-chief, repeating several times that he wants to get out of the banking, insurance and auto business as quickly as possible.  He knows their problems will soon be his problems.  He also knows that getting out will be much harder than getting in. READING BETWEEN THE LINES — On Pakistan, Obama had high praise for the Army and fairly harsh criticism of the civilian government.  Wonder how that will echo in Islamabad… "I WON" MOMENT –   Obama: "if that is how bipartisanship is defined, a situation in which basically, wherever there are philosophical differences, I have to simply go along with ideas that have been rejected by the American people in a historic election, you know, we’re probably not going to make progress." –George Stephanopoulos

I am 61 years old. I have never been more impressed with a presidential news conference than this one. I doubt I will benefit persoanally by anything he is going to do, but I don’t think any president is making the best decisions and listening to everyone better than he is. The critics including Danforth need to give a better solution if they are going to disagree. I pray that the second worst congress than the last one start to do their part to compromise and solve the problems. I do agree that more attention needs to be paid to SS, but am sure Obama will get to that. My only regret is that no one listens to me and that I will never be one of the 10 regular Americans mail that Obama reviews each day will be from me, but I had the same problem with Hilary Clinton. Life goes on. Peace!!!

I will also say that I was a champion of George Stephanophalous when he worked for Clinton but as a news man he is way to sensationalist which is why I am not a champion of Barbara Walters. He would be a far better reporter if he left his opinion out of it. Peace!!! So much for a news organization run by the corporate world. They should have more trust in the people to report real news and the people who tune in.

President Barack Hussein Obama will go down as the best president the United States of America would ever have..bar none! He listens to the experts before making a decision. Its easy for him to change course if something is not working. Its easy for him to say I was wrong(“I screwed up”). He is a master diplomat. He cares about the poor and middle class and by extension all Americans. The world is beginning to respect America again and he deserves all the credit for that. Most Americans can see his heart..the guy is sincere! America really cannot ask for anything more from a president! I am proud of my president..whenever the president speaks he makes me proud to be an American..I am currently overseas..have been for 2 years and have traveled to a few countries and everyone is excited about Obama..you would think that he is their president. WHAT A MAN!

the border has a direct, verifiable impact not just on our health (swine flu epidemic, salmonella, etc) but on our security (kidnappings, gangs, drugs, and possible terrorist infiltration.) Yet Obama refuses, like Bush, to do anything about it except rhetoric. I realize the likely strategy is based on future voters and a natural empathy for illegal aliens (like his dear aunty) but so much damage is being caused by the open borders that something needs to be done. Even Mexico attempts to seal its border in the south. Yet we do nothing as virulent diseases and criminals come across. Amazing. Why can’t “The One” address this problem? How many kidnappings or diseases will it take?

Good move Arlen Specter! I am waiting for the other wise Republicans to make a move..don’t allow foolish pride to keep you attached to the party of voodoo economics and unjustified wars..party of the rich and those who pretend to be rich. Party whose leadership are political comedians like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannitty,Glen Beck, Bull O’Reilly and Ann Coulter. People have seen through the sheninigans of these circus clowns. I alway told people the reason why fox news is #1 in the evening is because most Americans love to laugh in the evening around dinner and late at night and fox provides humor..CNN and MSNBC are more serious news. Its obvious people don’t take these jokers seriously..look how many people defected from the Republican party and voted for Obama..now Arlen Specter has left and I suspect that more wants to leave but some are to proud and ashamed to break ranks. The Republican party is done..caput, patay..its over! Look at the Republican convention..they made fun of community organizers..can you imagine that! and 95% of the attendees were white and the other 5% wished they were white..now they give Steele leadership to sugar coat but Americans have seen through the Republican mess. The Democrat convention were diversified..Whites, Blacks, Asians, hispanics and others..now go figure! Obama is simply magnificent!

Excellent press conference president Obama! You are simply the best! Genuine and sincere president..we haven’t had one like that in a long time! God bless president Barack Obama and God bless America!

Ed:”the border has a direct, verifiable impact not just on our health (swine flu epidemic, salmonella, etc) but on our security (kidnappings, gangs, drugs, and possible terrorist infiltration.) Yet Obama refuses, like Bush, to do anything about it except rhetoric.”
Bush dispatched the National Guard to the border until near the end of his term, when the Border Patrol was staffed up to the point he withdrew them. Just recently Obama has committed another 500 specialists (such as dog teams) to the border. Millions have and still are being spent extending border fencing and barricades. Your ignorance of these far-more-than-nothing measures really undercuts your argument.

Posted by: jhw539 | April 29, 2009, 11:13 pm 11:13 pm

My first impression while watching the press conference was that it went very well but when one analyzes the answers one begins to wonder whether he is getting the best advice and whether there is a certain depth in his understanding of the issues involved. I particularly did not like his simple minded response on the looming swine flu pandemic which if not controlled with an iron hand could spread rapidly to thousands of people. Obama seems to be asking congress for a few billion but did not seem to take the hard decisions like closing the border and travel to and from Mexico for even 2 days to take stock of the situation and to track the flow of infection. His naive solution of hand washing firstly does not merit the billions he is requesting congress for but also hand washing if done improperly (without an antiviral or antibacterial ingredient) and hastily does not achieve the purpose of or the desired goal of washing off most of the virus on the hands. He made no mention of masks or cleaning surfaces with disinfectants. Hopefully this swine flu scare will disappear soon but if not each infected person with or without symptoms entering the country has the almost same level of risk/danger as a terrorist bringing down a plane.

All the these question have all been ask before ..It was the same things that he’s been saying for months and months nothing new…If Obama could really be ask a real question he wouldn’t know what the hell he was talking about..Obama doesn’t know anything without someone telling him what to say …It was the most boring thing i think i have ever listen to..Please someone ask him a tuff question like why did you have to have a photo op that cost over 322.000 dollards and scared the crap out of everyone in NY…Oh thats right he didn’t know anything about it..As he knows nothing about anything…And thats proof that he doesn’t …

Pcc:”Please someone ask him a tuff question like why did you have to have a photo op that cost over 322.000 dollards and scared the crap out of everyone in NY”
Most people don’t care about a military SNAFU or how they spent an insignificant amount of their mandatory pilot hours budget. Also, most of the reporters are smart enough not to ask a question that has already been thoroughly answered. Fine, you don’t like his answer – it’s not like he’s going to change it just because you asked again. The reporter would just look pathetically ill informed about recent statements.

Well, I haven’t been a fan of Mr. Obama, and I disagree with much he hopes to accomplish.
However, during parts of the the news conference, I found his reasoning interesting and logical. He hasn’t won me over, but I am reassured that he realizes the immense complexity of being president, and his own limitations in performing his duties. This is not a slam on him, very few men, especially at his age, are completely up to the task. He will learn, and become wiser.
It was the first indication of some class when he praised Mr. Bush for having taken the actions to make sure sufficient doses of flu medicine are available. He should continue in that vein. Even thought he has fundamental disagreements with Mr. Bush, it improve his own stature to recognize that a lot of things were done right under Mr. Bush.
Let’s hope he continues to appreciate that it was easier to criticize a president than it is to be one. If so, his performance will continue to improve.

Dont send your kids to school or go to work, but lets not close the Mexican border its ‘too late’ to stop the spread of the pandemic THAT way. Whats up with that?
Listen guys let me explain something else to you that Obama said in his speech. He said “I dont want to run auto companies” what he means is he knows he cannot regulate or control banks & huge auto companies nor their managers. No way. He cant stop corporate from hedging numbers, changing spreadsheets & stop big companies or banks from padding or skewing their numbers! They cant be regulated. The question? Why didnt he already know this or did he lie to support his partys objectives at our expense?
closing the Mexican border is a GREAT idea but it would upset the leadership of Mexico! We wouldnt want that wiould we??? Lets just let the infected cross the border by the thousands daily (along with drugs and cheaply made goods)!!!! That wouldnt help at all would it! Its like saying if a person is a junkie or drunk already why take away their drugs and booze. Imaghine if hospitals said lets not quarantine the infected, lets just let them roam free. This isnt chicken pox Mr. Obama its a flu pandemic!

My husband and I didn’t watch. We figured it would be the same gush and flow and gush that accompanies anything Obama says or does. After 100 days of soaring rhetoric and out of control spending, little fiscal honesty, a huge govt grab for controls over industry, finance and now perhaps newspapers, Obama’s speeches ring false.

Posted by: Pam | April 29, 2009, 11:55 pm 11:55 pm

Best answer was to the “surprised, humbled, enchanted, etc” question. You could tell that Obama was really thinking about what he was saying.

And then the waste of money on the fly over of New York
I am tiered of this love fest from the left wing media, when are you going to wake up and start asking questions that have substance I guess that is why We watch FOX news and not this left wing dribble that just makes me puke You guys make him look like a God , I wonder when he starts walking on water!!

I have to ask. Do some of the comments here sound like they come from party central? Honestly, I wonder if there’s an organized effort to get Obama loyalists lined up to spread the joy on the internet. After 100 days, I’m probably becoming paranoid.

Hope you are not a hater..he is our president and I’m gonna support him because I know that he is genuine and sincere..the complete opposite of George I never made a mistake Bush! Obama is a breath of fresh air after eight years putrefying so called leadership.

Fox news is comedy central! Most Americans tune in to laugh at the losers..do you honestly take Sean Hannitty and Bill O’Reilly seriously? They support of party of voodoo economics and unjustified wars. Republicans are largely responsible for horse excrement of economy we are experiencing now. How come you guys did not criticize George Bush for some of the nonsense he did! Arlen Specter has left and rightly so and more a posturing to do the same.. I say “GO FOR IT”.

There’s a lot i could say about this guy. I’ll keep it simple…the down-turn is apparently bottoming, turing around, and many of the banks want to repay the TARP money. If this is indeed the case, and almost all of the TARP money has NOT been spent yet…i wonder if we’ll get our TARP money back…or will it become: the “crisis to pay for 2nd rate industry insider kickbacks” plan

Posted by: hmm..... | April 30, 2009, 12:22 am 12:22 am

Stanley, when has Obama admitted to a mistake? Anything goes wrong it is immediately Bush’s fault. I’m surprised the fiasco with AF1 isn’t Bush’s fault yet.

No Stanley, I’m not a hater. I’m a disagree-er. It’s only been lately that people who disagree with Democrats and Obama have been labeled haters, bigots, racists, terrorists, ignorant, stupid…well you get the picture.
BTW, my family lives diversity. We don’t just talk about it. My mother-in-law is Mexican, a brother-in-law whom we loved (past tense sadly) was gay, my daughter-in-law is Hindu, one grandchild is 3/4 Mexican and my mother, sisters and I are registered Cherokees. And unless things really turn around for Obama and the country, I’d say that republican might have better chance than you think. MS longbeach,
What can I learn from a News network that supported everything George Bush did..the worst president that we ever had..now tell me with a straight face that you really believe a network that has the highest ratings in the evening time slot but that did not translate to votes for the Republicans..a large percentage of the listeners and watchers of the Fox evening political programs voted for Obama..Now, what does that tell you! It tells me that people watch but are either amused or think that these jokers are exactly that..JOKERS! I wonder in this day and age,who in his/her right mind takes Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck, Bill O’Reilly and Ann Coulter seriously. The Republican party and their style of governance is not good for America and most American are beginning to realize that. Arlen Specter left and rightly so.

MS longbeach,
Can you tell me which country or countries in the world has the highest standard of living..the last time I research it was not the United States of America..but the Scandinavian countries(Sweden, Switzerland, Norway)..Now do a research on their health care system..and after you’ve done that I think you would be enlightened. Health care ought to be a right for every citizen and not a privilege..in America health care is a privilege..in the Scandinavian countries its a right and every citizen is covered..the same for education..now isn’t that what countries ought to do for their citizens..Government cannot and should not do everything for their citizen but Healthcare and Education ought to be two must do by Governments. you can called it socialized medicine or socialism and all these buzz words you Republicans like to throw around. What is Social Security?Isn’t that a basic tenet of socialism? You Republicans who throw the term socialism around ought not receive social security. No system is ideal and they all have some benefits..the smartest countries are those that take the good tenets of each sytem and implement..check out the Scandinavian countries..hence the reason they have the highest standard of living in the world. The problem with capitalism is that it makes us greedy and selfish(my,my,me,me, my money,my money)that is what have us in the economic situation that we are in now(GREED,CORRUPTION,SELFISHNESS).

Pam—i just wanted to say i respect your post about diversity. it was touching to read even though i am sure we would disagree on many issues. i believe critical thinking is essential in good governance. dissenting opinions are essential. i am a gay texan (and i am sorry for your loss) and i am a democrat. maybe it’s that i am from texas that i am more tolerant of republicans, because i work with them and are friends with many of them. i think putting a human face on those you disagree with makes it more difficult to demonize them and that is a good thing. different views help me strengthen some of my beliefs and question others. your post reminded me that another human being is on the other end of this blog, not someone who wants to see me destroyed. peace.

But anyway, I have not felt as optimistic and safe in the previous 8 years as I do Now. I don’t have to “know” what was going on with the President and his Vice, and yet not being able to do anything about it. Most Americans “knew” what the Cheney/Bush, oops, Bush/Cheney presidency was doing to this country, robbing it. I thought President Obama’s news conference was excellent. He answered all questions appropriately, fairly, and with no hesitation as to what he wanted to say and what he said. He is astute, informed, and does his homework. This in comparison to the last president who during every news conference or speaking engagement I had to turn off the TV, or change channels out of embarassment for him and his fellow republicans who stood by and watched as he bastardized the English language, and at times gave incomprehensible answeres. All the time letter most of us wonder how in the hell he ever made it through high school let alone college.

You are a joke. What the President has done is for 100 days do what he said he wanted to do in his campaign and what the solid majority of the country voted for him to do. IF you voted for him and now feel somehow betrayed or disappointed by him doing what he said he wanted to do then I would submit that you are an idiot. More likely though, you are a right-wing nutjob who is posing as a disgruntled Obama voter because someone at your increasingly smaller, Fox-sponsored rallies suggested that bad-mouth blogging a president who has a 70 percent approval rating is an effective political opposition strategy. Either way, you are pathetic.

utter foolishness. All of this hoopla over Obama while most people do not understand the horrific damage he is doing. The debt, the class warfare, the socialism, the total destruction of entrepreneurial spirit. Benjamin Franklin said it best: ” When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.”

His stimulus ( porkulus) package is not working. Another 650K unemployed this week. He has the government owning GM and Chrysler and he has no clue what he is doing. He has convinced people to spend money they do not have and create the largest debt in the history of the world. Nothing but bad results and the liberal media keeps carrying the water. can anybody name just one thing this guy has been successful at? Just one?

Posted by: brian | April 30, 2009, 9:30 am 9:30 am

Mr. President: I don’t need your government programs to be successful, I don’t need your interference, and I don’t need you making entrepreneurs out to be the evil ones in American Society. You can just get out of my way and I’ll do the job creation and hiring. Just go away!! Last month I hired 3 more people and could have hired more if you had cut my taxes. You are a fool with no experience and only one answer: more government spending. People will wake up to your failures and you will lose elections, it is just a matter of time.

President Barack H. Obama will go down in history as the best president the U.S. has ever had. I have never been more impressed with a presidential news conference than this one. I think the president is making the best decisions and listening to everyone better than he is. He has so much class. Smart man. Very proud of my country.

O’Lord thank you for putting President Barack Obama in charge of this country. I know this would of never been possible without you my Lord. I know more of your great change’s are coming. When I read through some of the comments you hater’s write they make me laugh. I laugh because the only reason you small minded people make those comments is because President Barack Obama is a BLACK MAN. That is so sad but you better hurry up and get used to it. Remember we all will benefit from the decision’s President Barack Obama makes, not just some of us. I want to thank the Lord again for putting an end to all of you hater’s madness. Amen Amen and Amen! I Praise the LORD everday!

JUlia- all form, no substance. If reading a teleprompter is what you consider impressive, we are in trouble.

Posted by: brian | April 30, 2009, 9:53 am 9:53 am

all of you Obama supporters do not have a clue as to the permanent damage Obama is doing to the country. If you are here for the give away programs and socialism, you will be happy. If you are an entrepreneur and a job creator, you will be unhappy. Obama listened to Rev. wright for 20 years about hating America and how wealth redistribution was good. Obama is the biggest mistake in the history of the country and people are just lapping it up because they think they are getting money.

julia: tell me genius did Barry just slip up last night when he said he had nothing to do with the deficit….seeing as the house and senate control the purse strings and not the president…WOW does he even realize that the democrats were in control…i guess since he rarely showed up to vote he forgot all about it. Yeah i know the Iraq war cost sooo much money but oh my god the democrats voted for the war and additional funding for it so there’s blood all over their hands.

“Saved or created x number of jobs” – Can somebody explain to me how a “saved” job is even documented. I mean, are there polls being taken asking “Were you about to lose your job but because of Obama’s policies and economic stimulus, your job is now saved”? Honestly, I would like to know. How are SAVED jobs documented????? All I keep hearing is companies continuing to layoff employess by the thousands….

Benjamin Franklin — When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.
- A democracy is two wolves and a small lamb voting on what to have for dinner. Freedom under a constitutional republic is a well armed lamb contesting the vote.
- The Constitution only guarantees the American people the right to pursue happiness. You have to catch it yourself.
- I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it.

George,
I am dissapointed that healthcare was not questioned enough. The ecomonic state and the wars are very important, but the changes in the healthcare industry is going to effect millions of patients, staff, insurance coverage and over all employment. I would like to see the team that President Obama is putting together, because he needs to put a team together with front line workers and get their perspective.
Thank you for letting me vent.

People are rarely happy when proven wrong, actually they usually become somewhat bitter and negative – they lash out.
People are usually quite joyful and happy when proven right.
This might explain some the thoughts being expressed on this blog.

Although I didn’t agree with all the the President said, at the end of the Press Conference I said “That’s my President… cogent, logical, arranging arguments well, flexible”.
The only real personal knowledge (words, emotions, body language) we really get firsthand from any President is when he stands before us and articulates his thoughts in direct communication to us.
As for me, I happy with my selection: That’s my President.

Posted by: rightman | April 30, 2009, 12:09 pm 12:09 pm

Thank God for our president. I believe that he was hand picked by God. I also believe that he will be one of the best presidents that this country have ever had. Those that are watching and waiting for him to fall, well it will never happen, because he has God’s anointing on him to do this job. Many of us have prayed for this day and some of us have seen our prays answered. Continue to pray for him and watch God hand upon him.

When will the campaign end? Sounded like a scripted campaign stop with loyal journalists planted throughout the audience. Questions were deferential, easy and obviously planned. Answers were intentionally long-winded and short on substance. I don’t blame the politicians for exploiting this cozy relationship with the press, but the country is at considerble risk without a functioning adverserial press corps

I am 67 years old and had never followed a potical election as much as I did for this last one. I voted for Barrack Obama and I feel very strongly in my belief! I have listened and watched him grow – he is truly a leader that builds a team instead of doing it himself! He is not afraid to hire the person to get the job done. I thought last nights new’s conference was excellent! It is sad that American’s cannot pull together after an election and be one – I do believe that if anyone can do this President Obama will get the job done. He will go down in history as a wise and successful President and I am proud he is from Illinois!

Those of you who think it is an insult to praise the president’s ability to so effectively use a teleprompter have obviously never tried it yourselves. All presidents have spoken from prepared text. This one just does it so much better than all those who have preceded him, save for maybe Ronald Regan.

You people are fooled by a cult of personality. Blind faith in a MAN will lead you to irrational behavior and give him the ability to adversely affect our nation for decades to come.
Open your eyes. Even moderate democrats are scared by Obama. His wild political and social goals will wreck our economic future. Do not fool yourselves. Obama is driving economic policy although he has NO economic experience. Geithner and Summers provide opinions, but the overall policy is driven by the White House. You have elected an economic neophyte that has a head full of academic leftwing canards.
The older people supporting Obama in this blog are crazy. He is working double time to destroy their standard of living. Their retirements are being systematically diluted by borrowing and printing. Inflation. Protectionism. Unionism. Corporatism. Statism. Misguided Environmentalism. Paternalism. It all works toward making them poorer.

There is definitely a division and contradiction of the words that he is speaking/reading/voicing vs. the actual actions that he is taking. It is almost if he is 2 people – the one that rules with a very personal liberal belief system and then the one that tries to garner the public’s support by being middle of the road. Actions always speak louder than words.

Kent, Agree about the teleprompter, but Reagan was a sincere speaker who had learned lines for years so he it was not the machine that made him look good. In addition, he wrote or rewrote a lot of his own speeches and statements. Great speaking does not create a great man or woman. It does get them elected. I personally can not stand to hear Obama speak. I do not believe it is because of my total dislike for the man and all he stands for, but that his inflections are phony.

Obama could solve the financial crisis, create millions of jobs, cure our addiction to fossil fuels, bring peace to the Middle East, and have the US adored around the world and it would make no difference at all. To the republican right he will always be a communist baby-killer. So there is really no point trying to engage in a debate.

Obama’s reliance on the teleprompter is the equivalent of the ‘airbrushing’ that takes place in fashion magazines. All women deplore the effort of fashion magazines that promote ‘fakery’ and hold women to such a high, unattainable standard of ‘so-called beauty’.
Where is the outrage among our citizens that decry the fakery of a president who can’t rely on his innate intelligence to promote his ideas and plans?

Posted by: s. valenti | April 30, 2009, 3:31 pm 3:31 pm

Carol: Fox News is very biased against Obama. It is also true that many other networks are biased in favor of Obama. However I think it is very important for anyone who is honest in looking for a ‘fair view’ take a critical look at their own favorite news source.

Dave, the question related to his actions after winning the election. The answer is still” nothing”. BTW, just so you know, I started 3 companies, took 2 public and am the CEO of the third. I employ 70 people and have been hiring lately. I have not layed-off a single person. I pay outrageous taxes and could employ many more people if I was not burdened with the 3rd highest corporate tax rate in the world. I started with zero, worked my way through college and received a BS in Math, and became very wealthy by working 6 days a week/ 12 hours a day. I went back to grad school twice and earned MS in Engineering and another Aeronautical science. I volunteered for the Texas Guard and was a Major.I don’t need to hear from some lawyer from Chicago about creating jobs, economics, running a business or paying taxes. Obama has done nothing so far but read a teleprompter and create the biggest debt ever recorded in world history.

Posted by: brian | April 30, 2009, 3:35 pm 3:35 pm

I am so relieved to have such a competent President in the White House especially after 8 sorry years with the incompetent Bush administration.
Go Mr. President. You are on the right track. I would not want to have your job, having to clean up after the money spending, deficit creating, unethical Republican administration.
Go Mr. President!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Laura | April 30, 2009, 3:36 pm 3:36 pm

s. valenti:
This is utterly wrong. Obama constantly speaks without a teleprompter and is a very accomplished speaker. The presidential debates are an example and so are the many press conferences he does. Whatever your disagreements with Obama , his use of a teleprompter should not be your lead argument because it is very weak argument. You are much better off arguing against his policy if you disagree.

Posted by: SDR | April 30, 2009, 3:38 pm 3:38 pm

Brian: “I don’t need to hear from some lawyer from Chicago about creating jobs, economics, running a business or paying taxes. ”
What you don’t understand is that it’s not all about you. You’ve made a great success for yourself – congratulations! Awesome American story, man. But who are you to say that “some lawyer from Chicago” is unqualified just because you didn’t need his help or ideas? He can’t tailor his presidency to every citizen in this country, and if you’re so dang great and self-sufficient, he shouldn’t be tailoring anything to help you – with no offense intended by that.
“Obama has done nothing so far but read a teleprompter and create the biggest debt ever recorded in world history. ”
What’s the big deal with the teleprompter, which he obviously wasn’t using last night while writing notes on the fly?
And to say he’s done nothing is false – he’s signed a lot of orders, made a lot of changes. Say you don’t like what he’s done, fine. But to say he’s done nothing – you’re just not paying attention.

Posted by: Dave | April 30, 2009, 4:00 pm 4:00 pm

Right on Dave! I agree you dont like just say you dont like him….but to say that he has not done anything …you have not been paying attention period. Its okay if he uses a teleprompter that is what they are there for…not a life or death issue. Brian congrats on your business…I too run a business and I am fortunate to pay hirer taxes for my country. If it wasnt for the American people(my employees) my business would not have been success ..so I dont mind giving more money for a purpose. I pay taxes on everything else and if you are that successful in your business you will find money elsewhere. Brian you are not going to go out of business over 4% more because you said your business is successful!

These are facts about the United States economy:
- Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is down 6.1%
- Unemployment is nearing 10%
- A budget that places a burdensome debt on those yet to be born has been passed by the Democratic Congress.
- Social Security is still heading in the express lane toward bankruptcy.
Any other president would be skewered and roasted on these points.
Help me understand why not one question on even one of these facts was not raised during last night’s new conference?
Do intentions and “stage presence” trump results?

Posted by: us citizen | April 30, 2009, 4:32 pm 4:32 pm

Dave- you are correct, I don’t need the governemnt nor Obama. Most of my friends are looking for a place to put money where it will not be subject to the destruction of the value of the dollar. All of us feel that the only way the US will ever be able to service the Obama debt is to pay with worthless dollars. This leaves us with the question as to how to protect the business and personal assets that we have earned. It is the main topic of conversation as everybody I know in business feels that Obama has wrecked the economy long term. This will effect my kids and looks like a big plan to redistribute wealth by making cash assets worthless.

Posted by: brian | April 30, 2009, 5:06 pm 5:06 pm

My attitude about America changed for the better when Obama became President. At last America has awoken from a bad nightmare of the last eight years. It nice to have an intelligent person who is a real leader taking charge of our country’s problems which were inherited from the Republican party. Before any of you right wing nuts say another word, just remember you lost power because Americans rejected your negative agenda of fear and saying “no” to the cares of our people. May you never assume power again based on that kind of agenda.

Posted by: leftyintexas | April 30, 2009, 5:16 pm 5:16 pm

Obama is at great risk of over-exposure.He is now all over the place. It is not doing him any good. His advisers must review their Hollywood tactics. The President is not a celebrity. He must appear thoughtful and more serious.

Posted by: pickleramoji | April 30, 2009, 5:23 pm 5:23 pm

Brian – those comments I can sympathize with. I’m not sure I agree, but I don’t have the perspective of a business owner. I’m also not sure it’s entirely Obama’s fault and how much is, as he put it last night, him playing the hand dealt. (Recall when the bailouts started…) I honestly believe that he would be governing differently under a different climate, just as I believe Bush would’ve been a far better president without being thrust into history with 9/11 (and how I think he put our children in danger with some of his responses).
Some of your earlier posts just blended in with the blind vitriol that goes on here and I’d just offer that you come across much more credibly when you articulate the real concern like this (from the “unsolicited advice” column…)

I’ll tell you what’s a joke, a joke is when people get all incenced about someone taking notes in a press conference. The fact that you are so angry about something so trival shows that you hate him to the core and you will be angry no matter what he does.

Best President ever? Competent? Amereica being respected? I’ll start there. I don’t want to be respected be dictators that kill their own citzens. I don’t want to be respected by countries that won’t help when we ask for it, but demand us to help them because we can. I think I saw a poster also say Obama did everything he promised in just 100 days. I did notice that statement wasn’t substantiated. He did promise jobs. 109 cities are above 10% vs 14 last year. All 372 metro areas rose in unemployment. 18 are over 15% vs.1 last year. I don’t remember him running on the platform of empowering government, no growth in jobs, and quadrupling the debt that he inherited. My memory may not be what it used to, but I don’t remember any of those things being promised. Also more people buying, the economy is shrinking

Now, the story is long gone. Thank you the American press. I am convinced the mass IQ of this entire country is 12…as witnessed in most of these comments. And I’m not even going to get into the fact that this president can’t think and talk without a teleprompter.

From reading the Obama opponent’s comments about the news conference, one thing is crystal clear: he answered all the questions with such confidence that it gave his detractors the impression that the questions weren’t hard enough. PS-Obama won. McCain lost. Get over it already. Your arguments against Obama are petty, juvenile and ignorant. FOX and Hannity are the real liars and you’re too biased to see it because you don’t want to.

Posted by: Mike from Carolina | April 30, 2009, 11:33 pm 11:33 pm

Watching Obama respond intelligently to complex and random questions must be very demoralizing to the FOX/Hannity disciples who were brainwashed into believing that he’s “not ready to lead”. Anybody can see that he’s head and shoulders above Bush, McCain, Palin, etc. Most of all,Obama has something in spades that none of the haters on this site have an ounce of; humility. He won the election and the petty, ignorant and distorted ranting continues. What a country !

What a Joke!

The only way a liberal can get his hands in your pocket is through the power of the government. It is nothing more than legalized stealing…, they call it “taxes”. I learned this in high school economics in 1959. Now that I am older, it is not hard to understand the “economic principles” our teacher drilled into our heads. They don’t teach this anymore to our young people because valid economic principles are evil, according to the liberal mind. When I see what “liberalism” is doing to our country, I truly believe the title of a book I recently saw in the book store, “Liberalism is a Mental Disorder”.

Obama’s press conference was a joke, as usual. My kids, when young, had more difficult questions than this from their class! With the economy getting worse, since Obama’s been in office, and the trillions of $$$$$ in proposed spending and approved spending – not one question about that from these so-called journalists. How un-American.
Maybe Obama should answer questions like the Miss American Pagent – they might be more difficult for him. Oh, I caught the way he ran the time out with his boring drawnout answers – what a con.

I agree with most comments here. I think Obama could easily be one of the best presidents we’ve ever had. I never felt safer, more at ease with where we are going as a nation, than I did when watching that press conference. I wish the republicans would just wake up and joine the process and stop worrying about winning elections and their egos. It’s that attitude in overdrive which has caused the mess we are in now.

Also, Brian, get a life! Econ 101: We are in a RECESSION. We can’t lower your taxes. Because Bush did and lined people like your pockets for a while and caused the rest of us and our grandchildren to suffer, we are in this mess. You’re lucky we haven’t seen a 50% increase in all of our taxes to pay for his screwup. You are of the past. Please stay there and let the rest of us move towards the future.

I thought our President was uniquely prepared to answer all the questions. I wanted for Geoge to pass this comment to George Will. I watched the program on the first 100 days of President Obama on ABC nightline and I felt that George Will has an acute problem of sour grapes. He can not come to grips that we have a very popular, intellectually gifted democratic president (the opposite of his predecessor) who is doing a lot to try and get us out of this disaster of an economy which he inherited. In the program George seemed like a buffoon, cynic, and was mocking in his remarks. The same stubborn and sour demeanor that he is now showing every Sunday on This Week with George. I used to think that he was always well prepared, intelligent, and sort of objective but he has lost it all and seems to be out of touch with reality. Please pass this comment to him as he never leaves an email to which we can write to him directly.

I thought Obama hit every underhanded softball served to him very well. Problem is, this wasn’t really a press conference, and the questioning was weak and pathetic. I would have loved seeing him try and answer some difficult questions without teleprompter.
