Post-Condemnation, North Korea Threatens to Boycott Six-Party Talks

Yesterday, the United Nations Security Council adopted the "presidential statement" we told you about Saturday, condemning the missile launch by North Korea.

“The Security Council demands that (North Korea) not conduct any further launch," the statement said, also expressing body’s desire for a “peaceful and diplomatic solution to the situation” and welcomed Member States’ efforts to reach a “comprehensive solution through dialogue" and to continue the Six-Party Talks to de-nuclearize North Korea.

North Korea’s response: "The six-party nuclear talks have become no longer necessary. We will never again participate in such talks and will not be bound by any agreement reached at the six-party talks."

The statement came from North Korea’s Foreign Ministry, carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.

The North Korean government said it would continue to "bolster its nuclear deterrent for self-defense by all means" and "take steps to restore nuclear facilities it had been disabled under the agreement of the six-party talks…We will actively review building our own light-water nuclear reactors and reprocess used nuclear fuel rods that came from experimental nuclear reactors."

Taking a clue from his Iranian adventures, Barack Obama has dropped his demands that NoKo not launch a missile into the US in return for renewing talks.

They sound rational. How could diplomacy not work?

I think it time for the world community to say enough is enough and cut the country off from all aid – no food, no monetary aid, etc. The North Korean leadership has shown that it does not care about its people – so why should we kow-tow to their whims under such conditions.
I laughed as I heard our UN Ambassodor speak of the Security COuncil resolution yesterday adn the message it sends. Get a clue – North Korean does not care. Let China take care of them and the US should back off and just watch.
My Option on the nuclear weapon situation is to say to both North Korea and Iran: When one develops a Nuclear Capability, much responsibility comes with it. I would tell them that if a nuclear device, even a dirty bomb, goes off somewhere, you two are toast.
BO’s plan to “talk withou tpre-conditions” is not going to get us anywhere.

he Bush presidency resulted in some degree of progress dealing with North Korea. But under the Obama presidency, we have the tearing up of the agreements made during the Bush presidency and North Korea’s refusal to even participate in any further disarmament talks.
That would count as a diplomatic failure for President Obama, no?

HobokenJohn:”we have the tearing up of the agreements made during the Bush presidency ”
What were those agreements precisely? They seem to have been about as successful as the agreement Clinton made that North Korea tore up in a fit of pique under Bush.

Posted by: jhw539 | April 14, 2009, 10:26 am 10:26 am

After Bush finally returned to the terms of the 1994 agreement, there was actual, verifiable progress. North Korea was indeed dismantling nuclear facilities, despite the fact that the US failed to resume normal diplomatic relations, and the fact that US policy is to ignore the rights of smaller nations under the NPT.
The North Koreans are not stupid. They see the US approach to Iran. In addition, a nuclear deterrent is much cheaper for them than a full western size army.
On the other hand, the North Koreans know full well that the just issued Security Council ‘statement’ does not carry the force of law. Flying off the handle over it makes them look like they were going to use any excuse they could to drop the talks.
I wonder what exactly what they mean ‘no longer necessary’? That would imply they no longer need the economic assistance they were recieving. Doesn’t sound plausible at all.

“What were those agreements precisely? They seem to have been about as successful as the agreement Clinton made that North Korea tore up in a fit of pique under Bush.”
North Korea will walk away from six years of slow, fitful but sometimes productive negotiations that have led to substantial disablement of the North’s main nuclear reactor and partial disclosure of the scale of its weapons program.

HobokenJohn:”North Korea will walk away from six years of slow, fitful but sometimes productive negotiations”
Yup, just like they walked away from the productive negotiations under Clinton that saw them dismantling the same nuclear reactor. I do not see ANY productive successes from the Bush or Clinton negotiations with North Korea. Obama shouldn’t waste his time. He should tell China that if they don’t deal with their rabid side kick, we’ll encourage Japan to rearm and let them take care of the neighborhood. That will get some focus, quick.
North Korea isn’t our problem. Let the locals deal with it.

Posted by: jhw539 | April 14, 2009, 10:31 am 10:31 am

The Bush administration tore up the (1994) Agreed Framework because, it claimed, the DPRK had a secret programme to enrich uranium as a ‘second path’ to nuclear weapons.
It did not produce any evidence to back up its allegations, the Joint Statement of 19 September 2005 at the Six Party Talks made no mention of uranium.
Clinton dragged his feet on implementing the agreement, especially as concerned the DPRK’s main goal – normalizing relations. Bush then tore up the agreement, and called North Korea ‘evil’.
If you don’t get the significance of that statement, think on it. There is no negotiating with ‘evil’ – Bush was saying that the official US position is that the US is not compelled to abide by any treaty it signs with them.
Bush wasted five years, and eventually came back to the same position Clinton ended with.
Both Clinton and Bush were probably betting that the regime would fall on its own. They both screwed up.

They had better shape up, or the United Nations will write them a VERY sternly worded letter.

“Obama shouldn’t waste his time. He should tell China that if they don’t deal with their rabid side kick, we’ll encourage Japan to rearm and let them take care of the neighborhood. That will get some focus, quick.”
Sounds great but Obama isn’t going to do any of that. His European trip tells you how he is going to act. It will be 4 years of nothing with him. If Clinton and Bush were ineffective, then this guys is going to be worse
“North Korea isn’t our problem. Let the locals deal with it. ”
Keep saying that when a nuke strike hits Hawaii of god forbid the west coast or when these clowns sell the technology to the wrong hands.

When the next missile falls 5 miles off the coast of California I can’t wait to hear what you’ll say next.

He inherited the problem, therefore he gets a pass.
And since Obama is not pressing Iran anymore, why should N. Korea worry about Obama talk? If they are lucky Obama will soon be giving N. Korea a trillion $$$ bailout and give them the nukes and missiles.

I think the greatest wild card here is the health of Kim Jong Il. How do we know that he is even still calling the shots in Pyongyang? At Global Pulse this week
, we are examining the yawning gap between what Pyongyang claims and what world media outlets report. If there is a new North Korean power vacuum, then how will this affect Obama’s engagement?

drjohn relays this message from deep inside his fear bunker.
“North Korea will walk away from six years of slow, fitful but sometimes productive negotiations that have led to substantial disablement of the North’s main nuclear reactor and partial disclosure of the scale of its weapons program. ”
Interesting since right wingers were screaming for a military response.
I wonder what that would have done to the talks.

Just a testament to how “multilateralism” will fail with an irrational negotiator, whether Bush or Obama is President. Not that multi-party talks or bad, but…it’s the DPRK! They don’t like anything!

Need more proof that our wonderful president is a just a celebrity waiting for his next photo-op.
That surprise visit to the troops in Iraq was known a day in advance and the soldiers were pre-screened.
As usual Obama sets up the illiusion that he’s Mr Popular–but he’s just posing with his supporters.
I would bet the chilly reception he got at Camp Lejeune is more truthful.
What a fraud.

Obama will shrug as usual and do nothing. He is too busy planning attacks on US citizens.
The Department of Homeland Security was asked to, and published a report explaining how conservatives are dangerous radicals, especially the returning soldiers, and they need to have a national security plan in place to defend against them
Obama has now openly declared war on at least 1/3 of the US citizens.
Less than 100 days in office the most dangerous, openly divisive (to say the least) frightening abuse of power ever witnessed in this country.
He is seeking a civil war and doing everything he can to stoke it.
I don’t expect them to but how far does Obama have to go before the Obamedia covers these things.
I am physically frightened for my family.
Each day he takes a new step to deliberately harm conservatives, republicans and working families.
He needs to be impeached before we have a civil war.
“Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment.”
The report has an incendiary title, but the content refers to those opposing tax increases and increased spending as extremists, and as though that position is a homeland security danger.
Find the report online, read it.
Although we can now see the plan, Americorp (including ACORN) “just as strong and just as well funded as the military”
This would actually sound looney, and I wish it did, but it is all so true. Read the report. Listen to his rhetoric, read his autobiographies.
WAKE UP DEMOCRATS, DO YOU HAVE ANY FOUNDATION OR BELIEFS ANYMORE? WILL YOU SIT BACK AND LET HIM GO AFTER US, REMEMBER THE PHRASE ” and then they came for me” You will be next.
READ THE REPORT.
ROUTINE POLITICAL DISSENT SUCH AS ANTI-TAX INCREASES IS NOW A HOMELAND SECURITY DANGER…..IN AMERICA????????

“That surprise visit to the troops in Iraq was known a day in advance and the soldiers were pre-screened.”
ROFLMAO!
The desperation of the right wing to prove that Obama is just like Bush.
Still mad about this, I see:
Bush Teleconference With Soldiers Staged
It dominated the headlines and the television news-analysis for days, and the fabricated scandal was utterly dishonest. The so-called “staging” involved no manipulation whatsoever. A group of soldiers who were scheduled for a televised chat with President Bush were “caught on tape” discussing ahead of time who would answer questions on what subjects. There was NO discussion of WHAT should be said.
“I would bet the chilly reception he got at Camp Lejeune is more truthful.”
He didn’t get a chilly reception at Camp Lejeune.
Is the dishonesty on the right wing pathological?

“Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment.”
In 5 days it will be the 14th anniversary of the worst domestic terrorist attack this country has ever suffered and the worst terrorist attack after 9/11.
Right wing lunatic Timothy McVeigh along with some lunatic right wing conspirators decided to blow up the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City.
This attack took 168 lives including 19 children.
800 people were injured.

I am including some segments of this assault on american citizens report from Obama and homeland security. I will note the parts where they could not help but call us racists and anti-semites.
This is an outrage, but read these excerpts for yourself. Please note, they openly admit in the report that they have no proof for any of this. That is propaganda at it’s finest.
(U//FOUO) This product is one of a series of intelligence assessments published by the
Extremism and Radicalization Branch to facilitate a greater understanding of the
phenomenon of violent radicalization in the United
(U) Illegal Immigration
(U//FOUO) Rightwing extremists were concerned during the 1990s with the perception
that illegal immigrants were taking away American jobs through their willingness to
work at significantly lower wages. They also opposed free trade agreements, arguing that
these arrangements resulted in Americans losing jobs to countries such as Mexico.
U) Legislative and Judicial Drivers
(U//FOUO) Many rightwing extremist groups perceive recent gun control legislation as a
threat to their right to bear arms and in response have increased weapons and ammunition
stockpiling, as well as renewed participation in paramilitary training exercises. Such
activity, combined with a heightened level of extremist paranoia, has the potential to
facilitate criminal activity and violence.
(U//FOUO) Rightwing extremist views bemoan the decline of U.S. stature and
have recently focused on themes such as the loss of U.S. manufacturing capability
to China and India, Russia’s control of energy resources and use of these to
pressure other countries, and China’s investment in U.S. real estate and
corporations as a part of subversion strategy.
(of course they play the old racist canard, while openly admitting they have no proof for anything in the report,,,, that is called PROPAGANDA)
THIS IS INSANE. THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY AND THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION ARE FRONTING ANTI-CONSERVATIVE, ANTI-REPUBLICAN PROPAGANDA FOR WHICH THEY ADMIT THEY HAVE NO PROOF.

What do conservatives and Republicans have to do with right wing extremists?
Are you saying the stormfront crowd and the militia nutjobs are part of the Republican base?

You know I am not. If you can read, you can see that he is lumping usual routine political disagreement between dems and repubs, on things like the economy and 2nd amendment as radical extremist positons. If you are not following his party line you are a threat and an extremist. He also provides no proof that militias are increasing, he just supposes that this is what republicans will turn into.
The homeland security department has lumped all conservative or republican political positions into the same pot as militias, while openly admitting in the report they have no proof of such.
It is an assault on american citizens. It is fear-mongering propaganda, clearly intended to promote hatred and divisiveness between citizens.
Read the examples from the report that I posted. Obama, and Janet Napolitano, are politicizing the government in a manner never before imagined.

Posted by: MNM | April 14, 2009, 1:31 pm 1:31 pm

The DHS report is part of a larger plan to demonize Republicans and impair any possibility of free elections. Obama laid plans to control elections with the funding of ACORN, which can seize the properties of those who don’t vote the right way.
Then we’ll add in the Obama Jungen to enforce the proper thinking.

“Don’t forget that militia nutjobs prevailed, in the American Revolution, against the most powerful and bureaucratic empire then on earth.”
Today those would be “militia nutjobs.” Here we have a President looking to turn the country into a Marxian utopia and some wonder why those of us who do all the work are concerned.

Only an anti-capitalist, communist, typical anti-American Democrat would RAISE taxes and SPEND trillions of dollars (that are NOT his) when our economy is the “worst since the Great depression.” Okay, so HOW do you BORROW your way OUT of debt “Mr. Obama?” How? How does raising taxes HELP the citizens of this country? How? How does that spur economic growth sir? How?
And look out now America, in response to AVERAGE hard working Americans who have decided ‘enough is enough’ and are gathering their pitchforks and torches to protest the tax & spend raping of US Taxpayers by our newly elected Hugo Chavez wannabe president, Homeland Security-headed by radical leftist & lesbian anti-capitalist Janet ‘Reno’ Napalitano, has deemed all you PATRIOTS as rightwing threats to national security!! I guess moveon.org is a peace organization??
Only an American-hating communist would now threaten ALL honest, hard working Americans WHO DO NOT AGREE with Obama-anism as being rightwing extremists and security threats. Is Bill Ayres on the list? Nope. Is Ward Churchill on the list? Are the communist professors at Berkeley on the list? I guess Code Pinkers can protest on George Bush’s front lawn all day long, but should conservatives protest, we can’t have any dissent all of a sudden.
New era in Washington is not about freedom is it? Nope. You voted for a communist and that’s what you’re getting.

“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague.” – Marcus Tullius Cicero. True in his time, true in our time.
