President Obama Addresses American ‘Arrogance,’ European ‘Anti-Americanism’

STRASBOURG, France — At a town hall meeting here before a mix of French and German citizens, President Obama just discussed problems between the U.S. and Europe.

"In America there’s a failure to appreciate Europe’s leading role in the world," President Obama said. "Instead of celebrating your dynamic union and seeking to partner with you, there have been times America’s shown arrogance, been dismisive even derisive."

Continued the president: "But in Europe there is an anti-Americanism that is at once casual and insidious. Instead of recognizing the good that America does in the world," Europeans have sometimes chosen instead "to blame America for much of what is bad."

Both of these attitudes "do not represent the truth," he said.

"America is changing but it cannot be America alone that changes."

President Obama is here for a NATO summit.

Well stated, Mr. President. About time someone addressed it.

Heh. Obama calling us arrogant. Look in the mirror, pal.

A pres apologizing for American. This clown is out of control. America gives more and does more than any nation in the world yet we have to apologize???This makes me sick. This experimental presidency is going to destroy this country. We have NOTHING to apologize for. If its so bad why do we have 1 million people coming here every month. It looks more like obama wants to be the world president more than the US president. He is more concerned with image than truth.

“Europeans have sometimes chosen instead “to blame America for much of what is bad.”
Listening to Obama speak at the French townhall, I ask;
Why should they not blame America when the President of the United States stands before them and blames the US for causing the ills of the world.

Yes and Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston would fit in that area. Some of our largest and most important metropolitan areas are close enough together to benefit from a really good high-speed rail system like the Europeans have been working on.

“What does one have to do with the other?’
It should be obvious. Why do more people immigrate to the US than the other way around? Having been to over 40 countries including many under Soviet control, it is easy to see why the freedom and opportunities in the US are a magnet to people from all over the world. To watch our President feel the need to apologize for our country on foreign soil is pathetic.

We already have “high speed” trains there. It’s a joke. You could give all those train riders a new car for the amount of money lost on operating those trains.

The train system in Europe is fabulous.
Because of the short distances involved it is very practical, convenient, and cost effective. With exception of places like NE corridor as you say, it is not practical, convenient, or cost effective to use trains for transportation. It’s cheaper, more convenient to fly. Use your head.

That’s because they’re running newer trains on the previously existing routes. We never invested in a proper rail network dedicated to bullet trains.

If you read the article correctly—he not only spoke to our arrogance, but addressed the anti-American attitude in Europe.
It seems to me this was an “apology” in favor of the United States. Apology in its original usage meant “to stand up for” a position, point of view, person, idea. In effect the President was standing up for the USA.

Because sometimes the Europeans demonstrate more foresight than we do.

Posted by: Skip | April 3, 2009, 10:26 am 10:26 am

The focus of some comments on the small distances in Europe making trains more viable is interesting because you focus on single countries. Europe and the USA are about the same size.
In the USA the use of regional trains might be something to pursue. There was talk of connecting DFW, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and perhaps Corpus Christi, and El Paso with such a network within Texas. St. Louis, Kansas City, Chicago, Minneapolis, etc. could be another network. Just a thought.
I would rather take a train at times than fly. It takes a bit longer, but it is relaxing. Just my point of view.

For once, I don’t totally disagree w/ something our President has said. A lot of truth to that. Glad he took both sides for once.

Me, too, but taking a train to most destiations is inconvenient, costly, and slow way to travel. I can see the benefit of train travel in areas like the NE corridor and the benefit of moving freight nationally. It’s a great concept for passenger travel in Europe but not viable in US.

JV, that is the crux of your argument? That criticism of Obama is incorrect because of its origination?
That reminds me of the fallacy of this argument; Hitler was a vegetarian, Hitler was evil. Therefore vegetarians are evil.
If a criticism of Obama is wrong then refute it on its merits. Start analyzing the basis of an assertion, not its mouthpiece.

Sorry for tolerating Hitler for so long.
Sorry for anti-semitism.
Sorry for socialism.
Sorry for colonialism.
Sorry for communism.
Sorry for Boy George.
When I hear those collective apologies I’ll know that a real dialogue is taking place. All countries were complicit in those ills.

Not according to Washington Post columnist Neal Peirce or Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, a former Republican congressman.
Studies show $1 billion in transit funding creates 22,000 jobs and modernizing the US rail system in long overdue.
I suspect the real objection isn’t about better trains, it’s that Obama included $8 billion to begin constructing rail lines in the economic stimulus package and the budget he submitted to Congress calls for an addition $1 billion on lines each year for the next five years. That’s most likely not enough money for all regions, so conservatives would rather do nothing than support a future where our continues to “waste” money on infrastructure.

Obama has no problem as he has a history as being as anti-american as parts of Europe. Like many of the Euro’s he references he too forgets the good done around the world.
We all recall his 20 years with self described mentor Reverend Wright, whose anti-american, anti-semitic rants were such a source of pride that they were sold on DVD’s in the gift shop.
But Obama wants us to believe that he was too stupid to notice the anti-american rants.
We are not as stupid as Obama. He sat there for twenty years, even giving him the benefit of missing half or 3/4 of the sermons that is 5 years of this, advertised in the gift shop and in church newsletters flagrant anti-americanism and racism.
So if Obama is slimy enough to show respect for anti-americanism no one should be surprised.
He has a history of respecting that position.

AMEN
And while the rest of the world was complaining, although this was so exaggerated in the mainstream media, whenever anyone needed help who did they call on?
Even with the hijacking of ships off Somalia, we were asked to come in and help out the mideast countries and europe.
Which by the way is what happened to europe when they became so socialist with their failed national health care, chronic 10 percent plus unemployment, high premiums and co-pays for their “free” health insurance, taxes as much as 70% (and not just for the rich), and most importantly
EUROPE IS unable to afford to defend itself and had to call on us to fix bosnia, Kosovo, Yugoslavian conflicts.
They cannot afford to deal with their own European Union conflicts because they are so burdened with over the top failing social programs.
We will soon be in the same position. So who will defend europe when we sink under Obama’s high spending, military cutting, socialist policies?
China and Russia cannot wait!!
No wonder they smile so wide when they meet him.
Of course the trillion is US taxpayer dollars Obama gave the world bank helped a bit too. Bailing out europe always makes them smile.

If this had been a republican the mainstream media would have run the clips ad nauseum instead of making excuses for Obama.
They might have reported that the DVD’s were pulled from the gift shop very quickly as well.
Those couple of clips were only the beginning, but very representative of the hate spewed by Obama’s self described mentor.
Obama’s mentor also handed over the “church” news paper to a Hamas leader for an anti-american, anti-semitic rant.
No complaints for Obama though. He would have us believe he and Michelle were too stupid to catch what was happening around them.
No wonder he had a deep bow for the Saudi King.

Ahhh still repeating that debunked talking point huh?
Not surprising, its not like you think for yourself or anything.
What the bill contains is $8 billion in funding for unspecified high speed rail projects (skip to p. 237 for the relevant section). The money is to be allocated by the secretary of transportation. A DOT spokesperson told us that it is “premature to speculate” about what exactly will be funded. Even vigilant pork-busting budget watchdogs agree that the “levitating train earmark” charge is without merit: Taxpayers for Common Sense, a nonpartisan group that scours legislation for earmarks, told us that there is “no way that this provision is an earmark for Sen. Reid.”

With respect to the Office of the Presidency, it is from the person, I see a lack of respect for the pedigree of governments and the people. In all governments around the world, there are differences, yet there are PEOPLE in their own respective nations born into a chain of generations that have fought to protect the values and interest of their sovereignty, while being denied rights as citizens. No man shall turn that page.
Every nation holds its greatness, not just America. No man shall turn that page. The greatness of every country must be at the forefront, yet being responsible and accountable for the errors that affected other nations. It is incumbent upon all great nations to correct their errors, not ask a world of nations to absorb the damages caused by one nation. No man shall turn that page.
Was Jessie Jackson right about Barack Obama?

Seems to me that he is campaining for world leader. So far he holds titles of “Community Organizer in Chief”, “Apoligizer in Chief”, “Blamer in Chief”, “Spender in Chief”, “Delegator in Chief”, and the list could go on. He is just getting us ready to accept rule by the UN since we are now being made equal to Europe and the rest of the world. Soon other countries will own our government as they hold most of our debt and soon they will call those debts. We will get placed in severship controlled by the IMF or UN and then assets will be sold off to the highest bidder. The new top lawyer in the stsate department will be glad to move that along. Now how is that for a cnspiracy theory? Now prove it is not possible by reading and research.

President Obama is right. The last government was very arrogant. Europe owes United States a lot of good but when Vice President Cheney was told about all the wrong that was happening around, his answer was “SO”. This is just one example of the many instances of arrogance shown by the prior government like when they accepted ordering tortures in Guantanamo.

I am angered by Obama’s speech that Americans are “arrogant”. Sounds to me like he DID listen to Rev Wright in church all those years when he said “God Damn America” instead of God Bless America. This president needs to be impeached!

Arrogant? Humm. America men and women have bleed on just about every continent in the world, provided aid, stood beside those who could not defend themselves – namely Europe, donated food, helped organize government, spent countless billions of dollars across the world. Americans ARROGANT? I can’t remember any American President good or bad that would say such a thing.

i wondered on why President Obama has to defend the United States as being arrogant. in the world of Science, Unites States has every reason to be arrogant, for the fact that no other country i am aware of is as strict in publishing legitimate scientific data in their Scientific Journals as the United States. nevertheless, in the name of Democracy, it is important to come to terms with other Democratic Nations for the common good of the World.

Apologize to no one.
Remind those of our sacrifice and don’t confuse arrogance with leadership.
The count is 104,366
dead brave Americans.
And we have to watch an American elected leader who apologizes to Europe and the Middle East that our country is “arrogant”!
HOW MANY FRENCH, DUTCH, ITALIANS, BELGIANS AND BRITS ARE BURIED ON OUR SOIL, DEFENDING US AGAINST OUR ENEMIES?
WE DON’T ASK FOR PRAISE … BUT WE HAVE ABSOULUTELY NO NEED TO APOLOGIZE!!
I hope you remember this when election time comes around again.

The arrogance is coming from our weak elitist president who thinks he knows so much but continues pandering around apologizing and bowing down to all the countries and spending money we don’t have. Instead of taking effective action he is spinning out of control but as long as he talks nice and looks nice he must think he can continue to fool the world and us commen sense hard working Americans. Clearly he has wrapped some of you around his finger but it looks like most of America is finally waking up! God Bless America!

Truth be told European Colonialism from the 15th through the 20th Century is the source of most of the world’s problems including Iraq, Afganistan, and the whole African continent.

As I read the comments here, I can only chuckle at those who confuse arrogance with patriotism. I laugh at those who equate the number of troops killed on foreign soil with American exceptionalism. I guffaw at those who get angry with Obama because any person who has the clarity and intellectual capacity to use his brain to analyze all points of view is in their narrow view a traitor.
Americans do not suffer from arrogance, but from ignorance. Only 4% of Americans whose mother tongue is English can call themselves fluent in a second language. At last count there were less than 22 out of the FBI’s 12,000 agents that are fluent in Arabic. It takes hard long work to become fluent in a foreign language (something that the “Dancing to the Stars” crowd seems not to understand). Understanding others and their cultures is not only a product of language learning, but is in the best interest of America. Whatever happened to “Know thy enemy (Republican speak).”
I can never forget a parent who I call about her child’s progress in French class being surprised that her daughter was studying French. Her response was, “I don’t want my daughter to be taking French. I want her to be taking American.” Is there no doubt that Americans are perceived as arrogant when the educational system produces total idiots that believe they are the best in the world?
