Swine Flu Skeptic: The Sky Is Not Falling

ABC News’ Jonathan Karl reports: In Texas, state officials have shut down all high school sporting events.  In Washington, Vice President Biden says he’s advised family members not to fly in airplanes.  But at least one member of Congress has a different message on the swine flu: Don’t worry about it. Congressman Ron Paul, R-Tex., is a committed libertarian who is skeptical of government action of any kind.  He is also one of the few medical doctors in Congress and he may have a point.  Maybe, just maybe, swine flu fears have been blown out of proportion. As ABC’s Z. Byron Wolf reported earlier this week, Dr. Paul was a freshman Congressman in 1976, during the last swine flu panic.  He says he was one of just two members of the House who voted against the emergency swine flu vaccination program ordered by President Ford.  An extreme position?  Not really.  Only one person died from the swine flu then, but at least 25 people died because of the vaccine. We caught up with Dr. Paul in his Congressional office and talked about this latest swine flu scare.  Listen carefully: He might be as correct on this one as he was in 1976.

Ron is right, heck even if he is wrong there is pretty much nothing the government can actually do at this point now anyways. Worse if folks overreact the economy will get even worse.

Dr. Paul is right about everything on this one. Seasonal influenza sickens millions and kill thousands in the U.S. each year, and no one even flinches. The world will never be free of emerging diseases. We need to learn to live our lives, use common sense with regard to illness, and learn to adapt to an ever-changing disease world.

Posted by: dlh | April 30, 2009, 2:17 pm 2:17 pm

He is right on this one and pretty much everything else. Just deal with the folks that have extreme cases. There is no way you can stop these types of things from spreading so trying to do so is a waste of money.

Posted by: Huh | April 30, 2009, 2:24 pm 2:24 pm

People love to panic they get themselves all worked up over nothing. Your chances of catching swine flu are about as good as your chances of being killed by terrorists…very unlikely. Please worry about jobs, healthcare and consumer rights lack of those really is a serious concern.

Dr. Paul is always right about everything. Why are there so few intelligent, sane people representing us in Washington?

Posted by: Susiejoe | April 30, 2009, 2:27 pm 2:27 pm

Why not take on our toxic food supply. Then you would have a healthier populace that can overcome the flu. Besides we wouldn’t be so fat and maybe the healthcare crisis would start to subside. Go Dr. Paul!

Posted by: Huh | April 30, 2009, 2:28 pm 2:28 pm

They arent closing the Mexican border to stop it from spreading here, but the President himself encouraged us all to wash our hands, blow off work and not send our kids to school instead. What great leadership! I weep that more people didnt vote for Ron Paul every day.

I’m pretty sure Dr. Paul is not right about everything, being human and all that. You Ron Paul supporters need to get a grip and not idolize anyone so much.
However, he is definitely right about the flu scare (that’s probably all it is), torture, civil liberties, staying out of wars, and more. He was the only decent Republican to run for President. But he’s just a man, not a god, and reasonable persons can disagree with some of his positions.

Ron Paul is right on this one. This story is WAY overblown by the media.

You people are missing the point… This is a flu that our body systems do not recognize… in return your antibodies can turn on you and attack… then you die.
Stop trying to make this out to be just another flu, Vice President Biden knows better and should to.

Mad Farmer – He isn’t perfect, but I challenge you to tell me where he is wrong.

insight – If it kills more in a year than traffic fatalities in a day, I would be surprised. It may kill but that is life. We don’t need to shut the country down. Besides those who survive will be stronger as will their offspring.

When Ron Paul agrees with the Obama Administration, I generally feel pretty confident that the actions being taken aren’t only correct, but obvious to the pros.

Why not wait until confirmed, to report?

insight – Not to worried. Got my elderberry ready just in case. If it is like the Spanish flu of 1918 no amount quarantining will stop it. Los Alamos just did a simulation showing that it will spread no matter what we try to do.

Posted by: Huh | April 30, 2009, 2:46 pm 2:46 pm

insight – Actually I do have kids, and I do have my elderberry like I said. But what every happens is going to happen regardless of what we try to do. If you don’t believe me then believe the Los Alamos scientists. Obama was right about washing your hands and covering your mouth when you cough.

jhw539 – You make a good point. That kind of consensus means something positive.

Posted by: Huh | April 30, 2009, 2:53 pm 2:53 pm

wolf – If I may, remember the government said that the economy was sound a month before it crashed. For what it is worth, Ron Paul said that the economy would crash during the presidential debates.

Posted by: Huh | April 30, 2009, 2:54 pm 2:54 pm

Ron is right on this…and many other things. Look folks 30,000-40,000 people die in the US EVERY YEAR! And it doesn’t get the media coverage that this is getting. Is this a bad strain of flu…yes it is. But the Chicken Little antics are getting old. Be smart, wash your hands often, cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze. If you get sick AND run a fever, seek medical treatment…and don’t go to work or school.

Posted by: Independent63 | April 30, 2009, 2:58 pm 2:58 pm

I agree with the person who thought it was insane that they arent closing the Mexican border to stop the swine flu from spreading here; however, the President is encouraging folks to wash our hands, blow off work and not send our kids to school instead.
I think we need a bit more of an attack plan, Mr. President.

Posted by: maria fossey | April 30, 2009, 2:58 pm 2:58 pm

“Only one person died from the swine flu then, but at least 25 people died because of the vaccine.” …. When the cure starts killing more people than the original disease, one has to realize that we have broken the very oath of all medical practitioners -”First, Do No Harm!” As with ANY medical procedure or medicine, there is an adverse risk to accepting a treatment. When the risk of death or disability from the flu is lower than the adverse risk of the treatment, doing nothing is exactly what you do.

Posted by: LivingNearTheBorder | April 30, 2009, 3:20 pm 3:20 pm

this is SO overblown! there are 300 MILLION people in the US and just over 100 have contracted the swine flu! what are we freaking out about? it’s les than .00000033% of the population. get a grip!!

Posted by: michelle | April 30, 2009, 3:22 pm 3:22 pm

So only one person died of the swine flu in 1976 after the vaccine was widely distributed. Isn’t that what the vaccine is supposed to do? How many would have died had it not been distributed? No one knows: not me, not you, not Ron Paul.

Dear Huh: Since Paul is a Libertarian who prefers less government regulation and interference in private business, he would presumably allow farmers to use whatever chemicals they want on their crops, thus making the food supply MORE TOXIC. Here’s a good joke: How can you tell if an apple is safe to eat? Don’t eat one unless there’s a worm in it. If the worm looks healthy then it’s safe to eat!!

Posted by: AlChemist | April 30, 2009, 3:39 pm 3:39 pm

This guy is often a loose wing nut, but he couldn’t be more right on this one. At the moment this “pandemic” is just a(nother) serious outbreak of irresponsible journalism. As has been mentioned by other posters, regular influenza sickens and kills many people each year, making this pig flu a complete non-story.
Yet, the media want a story(!), so they hype it through the roof, and there you go…

This is just another Obama distraction. Notice the media didn’t ask him 1 question on the economy and for God sake, can someone ask him why the stimulus is not working? Most of the media except for Fox and a few other’s that Obama won’t call on are a bunvh of chicken $h!T$. Consumer spending again went negative and somehow this is a back page story to less than 300 people who are sick. Most of you can’t even accept that around 36K people die every year of the traditional flus during flu season. this strain is far less potent. Even though Ron Paul is the original nutty professor, he happens to right on this one.

I like how people call Ron Paul a nutjob but they can’t describe rationally why he is a nutjob. Ron Paul isn’t a nutjob, and odds are he can defend all of positions with logic and reason instead of ad hominem. I don’t agree with him on everything, but he’s usually right.

Posted by: Joe | April 30, 2009, 4:14 pm 4:14 pm

It appears Ron Paul’s lack of understanding of the flu is about as the same as his understanding of the constitution.

This is going to run the same lines that the 1918 Spanish flu did. That is how these are designed to work. Read up on the Spanish Flu of 1918 and see what this is meant to do and how. This is the first stage it wont kill that many, but wait until this fall.

AlChemist – EPA does some good things, but the way to change behavior is to sue the pnats off those that do harm. If farmers use pesticides, then people should sue them when they get sick much like people did with the cigarette companies. They only listen when it hits them in the wallet. Folks find ways around regulations. By the way I live in NM and I grow my own stuff on a 1/4 acre. Its organic too. I even have an elderberry plant that is barring fruit just at the right time for this pandemic.

Here is how well flu vaccine works in tests: 3% of people who don’t get the vaccine contract the flu. 2% of the people who DO get the vaccine contract the flu. From this they derive that getting vaccinated reduces your likelihood of getting the flu by 50%.
Eat lots of Vitamin D to keep your body’s immune system from killing itself like with the 1918 flu. Vitamin D…

Ron Paul, as usual is correct. the media is having a field day with this nonsense. oh and by the way if we were never taken off the gold standard, would we be in this economic mess we are in today? would our dollar be literally worth about 4 cents as it is today?

Dr. Paul is right as usual. I live in south Texas in Cameron County right on the Rio Grande River next to Mexico which has half of our trade dependent on Mexicans. I also have a new baby girl born in January. As soon as I heard about the flu I waited to hear the opinion from my doctor, Dr. Ron Paul.
His word is as good as gold. Every other American can freak out for all I care. I’ll only freak out if Ron is freaking out.

@John (5:21:01 PM) — Just FYI, Dr. Paul continues to practice medicine while serving in office. And, like Dr. Paul, the CDC and WHO also advise washing your hands frequently, covering your mouth when you cough, and keeping a distance from infected persons to prevent the spread of virus.

Posted by: NotJohn | April 30, 2009, 6:25 pm 6:25 pm

Once again the good doctor is right. Unfortunately, we will probably continue to see more fearmongering on the news and from the government. VP Biden’s comment that he asked his family not to fly on commercial airlines was thoughtless and unnecessary; it was Cheney-lite in terms of fearmongering.

@notjohn:
Thank you for informing me on Dr. Paul still practicing medicine. I did not know that.
I still think that being cautious is a much better approach to take, though. And while I think he is a good, honest person who sticks to his guns, I just think he is fundamentally wrong on the majority of the stances he takes.

Posted by: John | April 30, 2009, 9:44 pm 9:44 pm

I like Ron Paul’s overall approach to solving problems. Leave it alone, it’ll fix itself. People who always interfere and try to fix thing create two problems for every one they solve.

Once again, the wise Dr. Ron Paul speaks out rationally against the mass hysteria, putting everything into context. Calling Ron Paul fundamentally wrong is, well, fundamentally wrong. The USA went from a backwards agrarian country in the 1790s to the world’s leading economy in 1872 and the world’s highest standard of living by 1885. During this time, America was on the gold standard, had just about no 3 letter agencies, no CDC, no welfare, no social security, no medicare, no medicade, nothing. All the while, the nation had the world’s best medical care and greatest opportunity. Even during the Spanish Flu of 1918 the US government did absolutely nothing and it resulted in a morbidity rate of 2%, well below the 5% in Europe, which had governments doing something (and frequently did something every year in just about every aspect of life, including medicine, hence why it took them longer to get the cure).
Looking at history, America fared better than anyone else did, advanced faster than anyone else did and enjoyed a lifestyle that no one else could for nearly 60 years, all in the near-total absence of government and fake monopoly money. Yet here we are today, ignoring the timeframe and conditions that made America great, chosing to pick the decisions that allowed Europe to stagnate and allow America to surpass them. This includes asking our government to solve our health scares.
