Texas Governor: Texans May Want to Secede From the Union

ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: After appearing at a series of anti-tax “tea party” rallies across the state, Texas Gov. Rick Perry on Wednesday asserted that the anti-Washington fervor among his constituents may at some point leave them pushing to secede from the United States. Speaking to reporters, Perry, R-Texas, said he saw no reason why Texas should leave the union. But he pointed out that when Texas became a state in 1845, it did so with the understanding that it could end its ties with the U.S., if its constituents so chose. “There’s a lot of different scenarios,” Perry said, according to the Associated Press. “We’ve got a great union. There’s absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that. But Texas is a very unique place, and we’re a pretty independent lot to boot.” Perry, who became governor after George W. Bush was elected to the White House in 2000, is facing a tough primary challenge in his 2010 reelection race. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, is also running for the seat. It’s difficult to imagine that talk of seceding from the union being a political winner this side of the Civil War — or at least this side of the civil-rights movement. In any event, few in Texas or beyond view secession talk as anything more than “Don’t mess with Texas” bluster. But the comments have made Perry one of the biggest attention-getters in the wake of Wednesday’s protests, an unprecedented series of gatherings for grass-roots fiscal conservatives. Plus, as former Bush media adviser Mark McKinnon pointed out on ABCNews.com’s “Top Line” today, what may sound like a clanker in the rest of the country may not seem odd in the Lone Star State. “I think he looks really silly everywhere but in Texas. But in Texas, it’s brilliant primary politics, and I guarantee you those Republican primary voters are eatin’ that up,” McKinnon said. McKinnon added that, if Perry beats Hutchison and wins another term, he could be a contender for national office. “Listen, any governor of Texas or of California or Florida, frankly . . . or New York are always going to be on the list for [president], and if Rick Perry gets reelected he will have been in office potentially for 14 years. So yeah, he’s a very serious player,” he said. Asked about the comments Thursday on a conference call with reporters, some of Perry’s fellow GOP governors echoed the concerns he raised. “What he was talking about was 10th Amendment and very legitimate issues in the way that the federal government seems to be jamming a lot of states with a number of different mandates,” said Gov. Mark Sanford, R-S.C. “I think every different governor could come up with their different story of a federal mandate that is not only obtrusive by its very nature but what in some ways thwarts what would be a best effort on the ground to better economy, better competitiveness, etc.” Said Haley Barbour, R-Miss.: “When the federal government fires the president of General Motors and half the board of directors, I would say they are going to some new extremes. I don’t blame Rick for talking about the 10th Amendment.” The Constitution’s 10th Amendment states: “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” ABC News’ Teddy Davis and Ferdous Al-Faruque contributed to this report.

I’m sorry, but wasn’t the whole ting about a state having the power to secede from the union settled in a little thing called the Civil War?
Normal, “real” Americans do not share the views of Perry or the conservative hordes.

The German Dr. stood up and said, “Well medicene in my country is so advanced, we can take a lung out of one person and put it into another and have him looking for work in 4 weeks.”
The Russian Dr. got up and said my country is even more advanced, we can remove half a heart from one person, put it into another and have them both looking for work in just 2 weeks!”
Not to be outdone, the American Dr. stood up and addressed the conference, Well:, he said, “My country is so far advanced in medicene, we can take an a$$hole out of Chicago, put him the the white house, and have half the country looking for work within 24 hours.

Secession is a form of tyranny/treason AGAINST the US Government – something Perry should think about on his way to prison…. I had the misfortune of living in that crime-ridden state, with gun carrying racist and the most religious intolerant people you could ever imagine… Let them secede and see how far they will get on their own with the next hurricane or with educating all the illegal immigrant children in their public schools without government help! Wasn’t Perry the guy that really bailed the people of Louisiana out by opening the doors and the state to the Katrina victims? And then what a year or two later Texas suffered their own hurricane; low and behold, there was no whining, whimpering from that states residents, simply “lets get to work and rebuild things”, similar to the way the recent flood victims in the midwest have handled their misfortune.
Disagreeing with the federal Government over how they force their agenda onto the states should be a concern to all states. He was asked a question and answered it in a way that is apparently threatening or offensive to those who relish every move they make on Government promises. Not to mention that the Government has to print the money that some Govenors are lapping up like cocaine addicts.
To make his comments about race, the kkk or beer drinking race fans is insanity and shows the extreme immaturity of the readers of your post, Mr. Klein.

Dear American liberals, leftists, social progressives, socialists, Marxists and Obama supporters, et al:
We have stuck together since the late 1950′s, but the whole of this latest election process has made me realize that I want a divorce. I know we tolerated each other for many years for the sake of future generations, but sadly, this relationship has run its course. Our two ideological sides of America cannot and will not ever agree on what is right so let’s just end it on friendly terms. We can smile and chalk it up to irreconcilable differences and go our own way. Here is a model separation agreement:
Our two groups can equitably divide up the country by landmass each taking a portion. That will be the difficult part, but I am sure our two sides can come to a friendly agreement. After that, it should be relatively easy! Our respective representatives can effortlessly divide other assets since both sides have such distinct and disparate tastes. We don’t like redistributive taxes so you can keep them. You are welcome to the liberal judges and the ACLU. Since you hate guns and war, we’ll take our firearms, the cops, the NRA and the military. You can keep Oprah, Michael Moore and Rosie O’Donnell.
We’ll keep the capitalism, greedy corporations, pharmaceutical companies, Wal-Mart and Wall Street. You can have your beloved homeless, homeboys, hippies and illegal aliens. We’ll keep the hot Alaskan hockey moms, greedy CEO’s and rednecks. We’ll keep the Bibles and give you NBC and Hollywood.
You can make nice with Iran and Palestine and we’ll retain the right to invade and hammer places that threaten us. You can have the peaceniks and war protesters. When our allies or our way of life are under assault, we’ll help provide them security.
We’ll keep our Judeo-Christian values… You are welcome to Islam, Scientology, Humanism and Shirley McClain. You can also have the U. N., but we will no longer be paying the bill.
We’ll keep the SUVs, pickup trucks and oversized luxury cars. You can take every Subaru station wagon you can find.
You can give everyone healthcare if you can find any practicing doctors we’ll continue to believe healthcare is a luxury and not a right. We’ll keep The Battle Hymn of the Republic and the National Anthem. I’m sure you’ll be happy to substitute Imagine, I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing, Kum Ba Ya or We Are the World.
We’ll practice trickle down economics and you can give trickle up poverty your best shot. Since it often so offends you, we’ll keep our history, our name and our flag.
Would you agree to this? If so, please pass it along to other like minded liberal and conservative patriots and if you do not agree, just hit delete. In the spirit of friendly parting, I’ll bet you ANWAR which one of us will need whose help in 15 years.

this comes along everyso often. I recall talk in the 70′s of Alaska and Texas secceeding and signing agreements with OPEC of all things! Of course it would be great if we had more democracy and freedom for the people of the US but there is no way that the Federal government is going to give up its ability to tax, and control Texas or any other state. Especially because so many of the Federal armed forces comes from Texas and similiar states. Best we could hope for is for, somehow, people to recognize that any time power is aggrandised the less democratic it becomes. You have more control over your local politicos than those on the national level. Devolution people. About time to give the States and people more power.

We in Alberta, Canada would love to see a number of US states secede from the unions as we wish to separate from Canada and found a new, moral, conservative nation with respect for God, absolute truth and right and wrong. Part of that would be to say good-bye to the legal system and found a JUSTICE system.

I believe he has forgotten that the agreement of 1845 was modified once Texas re-upped for statehood as part of Reconstruction. I believe, at best, Texas can only split itself into 4-5 smaller states, not secede completely. Either way, it doesn’t really matter. It didn’t work before and it won’t now. Apparently, for this clown, as long as a Republican is in the White House and controls the government, he’s satisfied to be a patriotic American. But give him a change in the political winds of Washington and he becomes a Texan first, saying to Hell with the United States of America.
Remember that the next time you have another natural disaster and the rest of the US isn’t automatically there to help, when your goods have high tariffs because you’re not part of NAFTA, when your citizens must have a passport to travel to the United States and when your schools stop teaching the pledge of allegiance and, oh, yes, when the United States invades YOUR country to get your oil, too.

Q: Doesn’t the Texas Constitution reserve the right of Texas to secede?
A: No such provision is found in the current Texas Constitution (adopted in 1876) or the terms of annexation.
However, it does state (in Article 1, Section 1) that “Texas is a free and independent State, subject only to the Constitution of the United States…” (note that it does not state “…subject to the President of the United States…” or “…subject to the Congress of the United States…” or “…subject to the collective will of one or more of the other States…”) Neither the Texas Constitution, nor the Constitution of the united States, explicitly or implicitly disallows the secession of Texas (or any other “free and independent State”) from the United States. Joining the “Union” was ever and always voluntary, rendering voluntary withdrawal an equally lawful and viable option (regardless of what any self-appointed academic, media, or government “experts”—including Abraham Lincoln himself—may have ever said). Both the original (1836) and the current (1876) Texas Constitutions also state that “All political power is inherent in the people … they have at all times the inalienable right to alter their government in such manner as they might think proper.” Likewise, each of the united States is “united” with the others explicitly on the principle that “governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed” and “whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends [i.e., protecting life, liberty, and property], it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government” and “when a long train of abuses and usurpations…evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security.”
Q: Didn’t the outcome of the “Civil War” prove that secession is not an option for any State?
A: It only proved that, when allowed to act outside his lawfully limited authority, a U.S. president is capable of unleashing horrendous violence against the lives, liberty, and property of those whom he pretends to serve. The Confederate States (including Texas) withdrew from the Union lawfully, civilly, and peacefully, after enduring several decades of excessive and inequitable federal tariffs (taxes) heavily prejudiced against Southern commerce.
Refusing to recognize the Confederate secession, Lincoln called it a “rebellion” and a “threat” to “the government” (without ever explaining exactly how “the government” was “threatened” by a lawful, civil, and peaceful secession) and acted outside the lawfully defined scope of either the office of president or the U.S. government in general, to coerce the South back into subjugation to Northern control.
The South’s rejoining the Union at the point of a bayonet in the late 1860s didn’t prove secession is “not an option” or unlawful. It only affirmed that violent coercion can be used—even by governments (if unrestrained)—to rob men of their very lives, liberty, and property.
It bears repeating that the united States are “united” explicitly on the principle that “governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed” and “whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends [i.e., protecting life, liberty, and property], it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government” and “when a long train of abuses and
usurpations…evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security.

I bet the voters of Texas want to secede from Rick Perry. They should be calling for new elections now. If Texas did vote to secede then toll roads and checks points should be installed on all routes in and out of Texas. We’ll need to bring the fence to the northern edges of Texas. All businesses that do business with the United States that are based in Texas will have to leave as a matter of national security. I’ll demand it from my representatives! The economics of dung are over. The real tea party began more than 2 years ago.

I am a Texan from Dallas, Texas and I think Perry is insane for saying such a stupid comment. Texas is becoming more and more democratic everyday. He is just pandering to his religious right Republicans that got him elected. The big cities of Dallas, Houston, Austin and San Antonio all consistantly vote Democrat these days. This state isn’t even the most Republican of all the 50 states. We are very proud to be Americans even though we have insane leaders like Perry and the former Bush.

Posted by: Stevan | April 16, 2009, 3:24 pm 3:24 pm

Please. Perry is a two term governor of TX and yet his name is never mentioned as a national contender. An entire election season went by–he was never even gossiped about as a potential VP. He’s an ineffectual idiot who even Texas Republicans hate . The only reason he’s still in office is beause he’s never had a significant primary challenge.
That said, I’m good w/giving Texas back to Mexico. No problems there. I think we should throw Oklahoma in too–kind of a buy one get one deal.

Amusing to read posts from these texas yahoos trumpeting their Judeo-Christian values – the same values that allow these folks to support criminal wars of agression launched on false pretenses by – what other than – texan presidents like Johnson and Bush. America would actually be far better off without the morons in texas, lower midwest, and south. I’d love for them to split off, and take their like-minded buddies from the rest of the US with them. The avergae education levels and intelligence of the US would then skyrocket, and we might actually have a chance to again become the democratic, moral, and decent nation that our founding fathers envisioned us to be, rather than continue to be polluted with low-mentality cretins.

You know this Tea Party protest may of had some merit if FOX and Hannity with Newt had not made it their own little agenda and promotion. It turned out to be just a lib. Obama bash fest. 72 percent of Americans agree with Obama’s tax plan. That leaves 28 percent that is undecided or against. The Republicans just never learn and keep doing the same things over and over expecting a different result. They spend 90 percent of the time trying to win by smearing the other guy and only a little time talking about what THEY can do for the country. Just take the recent election as an example. The rudderless ship needs to fix itself before bashing everyone else.

Sure, the right-wing REPUBLICANS in Texas would LOVE to secede from the Union… whereas the Democrats there probably just wish that they didn’t have to live with the stupid Texas Republicans!
Okay… let Texas secede. We’ll build our border fence AROUND Texas, and close the border. It will be lots easier to secure!
We can move the Johnson Spaceflight Center and numerous other federal facilities to more receptive states that will be grateful to have them. Next time a hurricane visits Galveston, we will save ENORMOUS amounts of FEMA response costs. We can prohibit Texas-based companies from owning energy facilities anywhere in the 49 states. In fact, maybe we can simply label Texas a terrorist state, impose sanctions and seize all the assets we can identify!
While we are at it, maybe we can pull Bush’s and Cheney’s citizenship, and drop their Secret Service protection as well. That would save a few $!
Well, in my dreams, anyway.

Posted by: chris | April 16, 2009, 3:36 pm 3:36 pm

I just find it absolutely amazing that the one group of people who claim absolute tolerance under the flag of Cultural Ethical Relativism can be so intolerant of a group of people who think differently than they do. Liberals, there are some conservatives who view the Obama Administrations call for CEO’s to step down or be fire and other economic invasions to cross a line in the constitution in that the government is a facilitator only for a free market economy. Unfortunately, that means that business needs to be run by business, not elected officials. If the decisions of the nation’s businesses are dictated by our elected officials, does that not mean we have entered into a Socialistic economy plan and free market economics is dead in America? It makes sense, Obama wants to help the people of America by punishing BAD business decisions. But by doing so, he violates the economic principles this nation was founded upon. This invasion of authority by our government, both this administration and the last, are paving the way for a lack of economic, private or political rights, slowly stripping our rights away until “Big Daddy Government” will make all our decisions for us and woe befall anyone who goes against “daddy’s” dictates. As polarized as the two major political houses are against each other, I do not forsee a reconciliation between the two in the future. This may change if a crisis bigger than how a country should be run comes up, like a third world war, or a genocide of a very public peoples. Otherwise, there is no reason to hold the two peoples of this republic in one cohesive unit, and America is doomed. Liberals need to finally push forth their ideals of Relativism and Tollerance and accept that they cannot change the stubborn ideals of the Conservatives. Conservatives needs to realize that they live in the same world as the Liberals and that somebody is going to have to make the first move towards reconciliation. If we don’t do this, we are lost. Our government, under various administrations, will each take control of Congress, and use an overly wasteful amount of time reversing policy decisions of the previous administrations, and wasting the rest of their time in office enacting their ideals and opinions. And when the regime changes, this will happen again, and again and again, thus wasting our precious resources and further alienating the two political parties from each other until a civil war is unavoidable. This is history, this is life. If we do not learn from history, it will effect our lives and we do not want to learn this lesson the hard way.

Out of Texas, it translates loosely to “all talk, no action.” Happiness was Texas in MY rear view mirror. Never lived in a more intolerant, bigoted place in my life and was thrilled to get out.

Interesting point from the poster in Dallas about the dichotomy between the cities and rural areas. Perhaps it’s the rural areas that want to secede. Wonder how well they’d do without the MASSIVE agricultural and farm subsidies everyone else’s tax dollars pay for? Hmmm….might want to give that some more thought before you run your mouth Perry….and Palin….etc, etc.

texasgirl – you need to read the news… we have a problem right now with deflation still… this ball o’crapola came from 4 things…
the last 8 years…
the moronic sensibilities that the gov is still spouting
the walls being removed that protected us from wall street playing games with the numbers that kept our economy stable and kept someone having some skin in the risk (a removal by the republican establishment)
and the false and misleading push to reduce the taxes on the rich at the very top of the economic ladder over the last 40 years saying it was helping the country and was imperative to create a more stable economy of jobs.
all republican bank issues.
and have you seen the facts on the tea parties and what 99.999 % of the people that have gone have been saying when interviewed… their logic is about states raising their taxes or about selling out their children…ugh (as Obama is putting money toward education of idiots)…fall out from the last 8 years…yet here is an idiot governor getting up and saying they might secede…
stupid is…as stupid votes for.

However, we have more than our fair share of conservatives who like to talk about how patriotic they are in one breath, and then talk about seceding in the next breath. Where’s the patriotism there? I will happily move to another state if Texas ever secedes. The old arrogant, conservative Texan role has gotten old – nobody thinks you’re cute anymore.

Would anyone really be too upset if they secede? Texas, quite frankly, is kind of embarrassing for the rest of the country. Whenever I would speak with anyone from another country when George Bush was president I would make it very clear that I didn’t vote for him either time. And he’s just one embarrassment out of many from that state. While I’m sure there are some good people in Texas, they aren’t the ones that go into politics in that state that’s for sure. So go ahead secede. Don’t let us stop you.

For those of you who like to bash Texas, it would be a lot better if you included your state of residence, your state is probably so embarrassing or insignificant that you won’t though. The economy of Texas is one of the largest growing economies in the United States. In 2006, Texas was home to six of the top 50 companies on the Fortune 500 list and 56 overall, more than any other state. Texas has an economy that was the second largest in the nation and the 15th largest in the world based on GDP (nominal) figures. As the largest exporter of goods in the United States, Texas currently grosses more than $100 billion a year in trade with other nations.
In 2006, Texas had a gross state product of $1.09 trillion, the second highest in the U.S.The Gross state product per capita as of 2005 was $42,975.
Texas had the second largest workforce in the United States, with almost 11 million civilian workers. The lack of personal income tax as well as the largely undervalued real estate throughout Texas has led to large growth in population. Since the 2003 legislature the Governor’s office has made economic development a top priority.
Much economic activity in Texas is regional. For example, the timber industry is important in East Texas’s economy but a non-factor elsewhere. Houston, the state’s largest urban economic enclave stands at the center of the petrochemical, biomedical research trades, shipping, and aerospace (particularly NASA). Dallas/Fort Worth houses the state’s predominant defense manufacturing interests and the expansive information technology labor market. West Texas and the panhandle is dominated by ranching and the petroleum industry.
Texas’s growth can be attributed to the availability of jobs, the low cost of housing, the lack of a personal state income tax, the quality of higher education, low taxation and limited regulation of business, a central geographic location, a limited government, favorable weather, and plentiful supplies of oil and natural gas. I’m pretty sure we can survive without the rest of you.

Posted by: hopesprings52 | April 16, 2009, 3:58 pm 3:58 pm

It’s hard to argue with facts.
Texas has the highest number of Fortune 500 company headquarters in the United States, fifty-eight. This has been attributed to both the growth in population in Texas and the rise of oil prices in 2005. Houston has the second highest number of Fortune 500 companies in the US, second to New York. There are currently 33 billionaires residing in Texas today. Dallas has 11 billionaires, the most of any city in Texas. Houston, the state’s largest urban economic enclave stands at the center of the petrochemical, biomedical research trades, shipping, and aerospace (particularly NASA). In 2006, for the fifth year in a row, Texas led the nation in export revenues. Texas exports for 2006 totaled $150.8 billion, which is $22.1 billion more than 2005 and represents a 17.2 percent increase. In 2002, the Port of Houston was 6th among the top sea ports in the world in terms of total cargo volume; Air Cargo World rated Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport as “the best air cargo airport in the world”. The ship channel at the Port of Houston—the largest in the U.S. in international commerce and the sixth-largest port in the world.
Waiting on “comebacks” that have no factual (or thoughful) basis.

Also, the Libs will do away with the Electorial College an that would mean that the large Cities will have control of the voting block. Which is about the way it is now. Texas could do very well by itself, having all of the necessary resources within its Borders. 33 States are now looking at the same l0th Amendment. Thats interesting.

And where does Texas think it will get its money from so it can buy basic things like FOOD for its citizens?
Oil? No, don’t think so. Times are changing and Oil is finally on the board to become less and less of a dependent resource. Sure we are years away from that yet but the process has finally started. So what will Texas export then? Sand?

According to the report, this is how Texas ranks among the 50 States today:
* Percentage of Uninsured Children
1st
* Income Inequality Between the Rich and the Poor
2nd
* Percentage of Population without Health Insurance
1st
* Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) Scores
47th
* Percentage of Population over 25 with a High School Diploma
50th
* Percentage of Non-Elderly Women with Health Insurance
50th
* Rate of Women Aged 40+ Who Receive Mammograms
44th
* Rate of Women Aged 18+ Who Receive Pap Smears
47th
* Cervical Cancer Rate
5th
* Women’s Voter Registration
43rd
* Women’s Voter Turnout
49th
* Percentage of Eligible Voters that Vote
44th
Add to this list that Texas has the highest rates for home insurance, 25% higher than 2nd place Louisiana. (See The Most Expensive States To Insure Your Home 2005 by Forbes Magazine.) Deregulation of electricity has resulted in skyrocketing electricity costs instead of more competition that would reduce our rates, as promised. College education costs have soared by an average of 39% in just one short year once again as a result of deregulation.
For those with their heads still in the sand, do yourself a favor and look at your bills, your tax statement, and read “Texas on the Brink”.
During the 2006 campaign Gov Perry looked into the camera and said “I’m proud of Texas. Are you?” I think the answer is very clear. Only Rick Perry could be proud of living in the worst state in the United States.
Boy Texas is looking better each day..NOT!

* Texas is the first in the nation for cancerous emissions into the air and toxic chemicals released into water.

* Texas has the highest teen birth rate and the most repeat teen births in the nation. (Texas requires middle schools to teach abstinence as the only method that is 100% effective in preventing pregnancy.)
* 80-90% of the homeless population living on the streets are affected by mental illness. One in four is a veteran.
* Texas is home to three of the poorest counties in the nation.Texas leads the country in executions since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976

Let’s do some simple math shall wee. The last 90 days of the W’s presedency, the market dropped 1600 points. The first three months of O’s presidency has halted the freefall and in the last 30 days has actually seen the market bottom out and regain it’s losses from his first 45 days…which of course were the leftovevers of W. So in 30 says or so…there has been a reversal of what W did and you can’t see that? Why is it so hard to admit that your ways are wrong? The DOW dropped 50% under bush in 1 year. Was that a succes to you?
Let me ask you this… So many are affraid of paying the extra 3% tax for the top 1%…but let’s put it in percpective. Since this economy is driven by produce and sales…wouldn’t you rather pay a higher tax rate on sales that you making than a lower tax rate on sales that your not? Something to consider.

Seceding will not be as cut and dry as those who want it to be , first you lose most of the job in your state , state jobs and federal jobs, social program, ultilities, cable, federal funding, housing etc, etc, not to mention they will lose their football and baseball teams, And if they go to war with another country they will be on their own , but go ahead leave.

Governor Perry. We’re number one! We’re number one!
In the most recent TV commercial aimed at Joe “After he drank a six pack”, Governor Rick Perry sharply turns to the camera and says “I’m proud of Texas. Are you?”. After anyone drinks a six pack, they just might agree with the Governor, but when they wake up and realize their head hurts, and the Governor left them with the bar tab, they might begin to think. For once.
Being proud of Texas has absolutely nothing to do with being proud of Rick Perry. Being number one sometimes isn’t that good. For instance we are number one in:
# College Football (yea! We ARE number one!)
# Highest home insurance rates
# Percentage of Population without Health Insurance
# Percentage of Uninsured Children
# Amount of Toxic Emissions from Manufacturing Facilities
# Amount of Toxic Release Inventory Chemicals Used by Manufacturing Industries
# Number of Clean Water Permit Violations
# Number of Hazardous Waste and Spills
# Number of Adults in the Criminal Justice System
# Number of Firearm Deaths
# Number of Registered Machined Guns
# Number of Traffic Fatalities
# Number of Alcohol-Related Traffic Fatalities
And if that isn’t bad enough, look how we rank in other areas:
# Education 37th
# Parks and Recreation 48th
# Police Protection 49th
# Government Administration 50th
# Environmental Protection 46th
# Public Health 45th
# Mental Health 47th

Gangs are out of control and violence here is off the charts. So please tell me, Silky, how does California got it going on? Oh yeah, let’s not forget that we now have the highest sales tax in the nation.

I say we secede. One thing you should have learned from GW is that Texans doesnt take sh!t from anybody. We can then build our own oil fields and make you idiots buy the oil. And even if we did become part of Mexico that would make new neighbors out of Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.

Belkeoki, well worded post, and thanks for actually articulating a position instead of the bluster that’s all over the rest of this blog.
The thing you may consider about Obama pushing the CEO out is that the CEO first came to the federal government for bailout money and was coming back for more. If we were purely capitalistic and free-market, that shouldn’t happen either. I like the fact that Obama’s version of a bailout, while not perfect, at least carries some implication of accountability and a true “investor” relationship. If you want our (the US public’s) money, we’re going to be in your underwear while you spend it. My impression of the first TARP was, the money is gone, no questions asked, no hope of getting it back. That made Bush seem like the liberal and Obama taking it a step rightward. Not quite “Ron Paul” rightward, but better than nothing.
If you think the govt. should stay out of the business, I respect that, but then also chastise the business for going to the government.

Posted by: Dave | April 16, 2009, 4:24 pm 4:24 pm

Thumb it’s nose at the American people? Umm, like the Bush Administration did for most of its reign?
Truth is, Obama’s got some pretty high approval ratings right now given that we are economically in the potty. So I’m not sure who he’s thumbing his nose at… Oh, could it be the non-majority? You know, those people who represent less than 50% of the population. I guess that’s what Perry means when he talks about the “American People” – he means the American people who agree with him. Go ahead and secede you unpatriotic jerk – take your ball and go home, little kiddies, since you’re not winning. As long as we’re making historical references, I’m sure Mexico would love to reclaim its territory once it’s undefended by the US and has no official diplomatic ties.
Um yeah, and the Dixie Chicks were vilified for saying they were ashamed the president was from Texas? At least THEY weren’t openly advocating treason.

What has happened to people? The Texas Governor makes reckless remarks before a right wing fringe of people in Texas politics and many of you throw all 24 million residents under the bus without blinking an eye!
Texas is home to many great and profitable industries and is home to 3 of the top 10 biggest cities in the US.

Yes, LA sucks. But contrary to what you and many other people in Los Angeles think, there is a world outside of Los Angeles. I spent 6 years in the Bay Area, and I absolutely stand by my assertion that CA is the greatest state int he country. But LA sucks, and is a haven for morons. I have no idea how people can put up with that place for more than a couple days at a time.

You are a bunch of northern bigots against Texas. Do you know that Texas asked the Union to help them fight for independence against Mexico, but the Union stayed out of it. Then Texas won independence from Mexico and the Union asked Texas to join. Texas said no, we’ll make our own country, we needed you then, but we really don’t need you now.
Pick up a history book and stop being ignorant about our state (our country) and running your mouth about “hillbilly hicks”, “steers and queers” and “the redneck RNC”.
Perry is appealing to what every native Texan is inculcalted with as a child in our public schools. And that is, Texas doesn’t need the USA. The USA needs Texas.

Something else to consider… The federal income tax distributes income taken in from across the country and distributes it evenly across the nation as needed. With the Southern states having the highest unemployment rates, that means they are contributing less to the pie and taking a higher percentage back. That means that the Northeast and Cali are essentially supporting the rest of the nation that is failing. How about you get off your welfare recieving butts and get back to work. Sorry…couldn’t pass that one up. If they succeed…we who’ve actually have gone to college for reason’s other than how high that school is ranked on the party lists would flourish and you’d be on your own… It would be a nice buffer between Mexico and the Northeast… Afterall…why would any Mexican want to come to the Southern states if they weren’t part of the United States. It wouldn’t be a step up for them… Ask yourself this Reps…If the best schools are in the Ivy League…and the Ivy League schools are in the NE…and the NE votes Dem everytime…don’t you think that maybe the smartest kid in the class might be right?

Perry neglected to mention there a lot of stupid people here in Texas as well. Probably more than the law allows. They are easy to spot though. They are ones usually driving an SUV or pickup with a “W 04″ sticker on the back window. If Texas secedes from the Union, the capital, Austin, will probably secede from Perry’s Texas leaving what’s left looking more like a welfare state like Alabama or Mississippi than a fully functioning state.

Rick Perry is a joke and his wild-eyed secession rhetoric proves it. This is the same man who, not too long ago, tried to use young girls as human guinea pigs by trying to pass a law making it mandatory for teenage girls to be vaccinated with an experimental HPV vaccine that ‘hoped’ (not promised) to reduce the chances of cervical cancer and sexually transmitted diseases.
Now, I will not even mention that Perry’s former chief of staff was a lobbyist for Merck, the company that was developing the vaccine, or that Merck had given thousands of dollars to Rick Perry’s campaign. (oops, I mentioned it didn’t I?) In other words, we’re dealing with the kind of person who would sign an executive order, thus bypassing legislation and the will of the people, to inject young girls with experimental chemicals which would result in millions of dollars in profits for one of his campaign contributors. Enough said?

I resided in TexAss for many years, and talk about a thumping bore of a state. There is no culture, diversity, no redeeming qualities, absolutely nothing to do but go to the bar on Saturday, the mall on Sunday, monster truck shows at the Astrodome, and the rodeo – you guessed it – at the Astrodome once a year. The state is ugly, flat, its climate is hot, humid, wretched 8-10 months of the year, and its cities are filled with strip malls, billboards, and topless bars. The list of why you shouldn’t live/visit TexAss is just endless. When you ask anyone where they will be traveling to on holiday, do you ever hear them mention “Texas?” Steers yes, queers not so much. Big hair, click-ish drunks, and attitude…that would be a definite yes. Thousands of points for having big cotton candy hair as they say in the south; ‘The higher the hair, the closer to God…” This latest article of the governor wanting to become independent is why one shouldn’t even waste their time, money, and energy visiting a state that wants to be excluded from everyone else…

The majority of Texans don’t support this knucklehead. He’s planning another run for governor and is looking for his 15 minutes of national fame. This too shall pass. Plus, he doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of winning against Sen. Hutchison or Houston mayor Bill White. For that matter, Kinky Friedman could probably beat him this time around. He’s just another black eye on good, honest, hard-working Texans.

I would have to assume that a lot of the people that got us into this trouble in the first place went to your beloved Ivy schools. Who cares where a school is located. And it’s the fed’s job to secure the border not the states so don’t blame the immigration problems on Texas, AZ or NM.

Oh, is there a what you can drive law where you are? odd. Conservatives created the income tax…so that answers the check thing. The what you can eat thing…never heard of that kind of law. The only one I see that is a real gripe is the smoking thing, and that effects everyone around you. If you want to attack the left…argue that we: Stifle your religious rights as the majority. Force you to accept and deal with parts of american culture that offend your beleif system (ze gays). Give unfair advantages to individuals because they may fit a demographic, instead of basing aid on individual need (see affirmative action). Don’t push personal responsibility along with welfare, to break the cycle. Often want to abandon the 2nd ammendment in favor of some unrealistic ideology that by banning guns, you will stop criminals.
Yeah…I’m not a huge fan of the far end of the spectrum either way.

Well, I was quite entertained by several of the comments here. There is no chance that Texas would ever seriously consider seceding from the union, and it is not the only state talking about the 10th amendment these days. How Perry’s comments during tax day turned into a threat to secede is beyond me, and how people who read this article suddenly became obsessed with Texas bashing is also quite the quandary.
I’ve lived in Texas for years now, and I’m not sure how some of the misconceptions and prejudices that other states hold about Texas have even come into being. Texans are quite proud of what they have here; live here long enough and you start to understand why. The manners, kindness, and generosity here is unmatched in my travels abroad. There aren’t many places left where perfect strangers ask how your day has been and are always happy to lend a hand when they see someone struggling for whatever reason. I feel sorry for those whose anger has manifested in the form of “trash talking” Texas.
Also, off-topic; I would like to ask people from other states to please come up with something else to say other than “the only thing in Texas is steers and queers” …. each time I’m visiting the northeast or west coast that seems to be the running joke when someone hears I’m from Texas and it’s getting a bit played out ;-)

Well… at last, Rick Perry has something to say that makes sense. By the way, most of you bloggers need to look in your history books for the agreement Texas made with the USA when it was admitted into the union. If you are so quick to show your ignorance, you should blog on your local county news website where you will be accepted among your peers.

hahawrong, i think we agree on quite a bit, i can’t be as articulate as i would like i am at work, i was reffering to things like trans fat laws in ca, standards on automobiles, (and who runs the companies now), income tax is not the only tax, and that specific tax has been perverted by both sides over and over. what i meant by how much of my check is that with all this debt we are piling up we either have to borrow, print, or tax. two of the three raise taxes and one causes inflation. that is why there were demonstrations yesterday. its not the whopping 13 bucks we get that should be the focus, it should be how are we going to pay for all this debt? that doesn’t even include some of the other garbage they are proposing. smart thermos, cap and trade, (they even admit this would cost every household thousands)climate change, (i laugh every time i write that) universal healthcare, it goes on and on. i am the first to say that the right wing has serious issues, its just that the left isn’t any better.

Posted by: stickman | April 16, 2009, 5:34 pm 5:34 pm

Ruff Ruff, just because Texas has its own little poison pill clause, or whatever, doesn’t mean what Rick Perry said was even remotely the statement of a patriot. The standards of patriotism aren’t any different for Texas than they are for the rest of the country. And seceding is not patriotic, no matter what those dweebs waving the stars and bars would have you believe.

Posted by: JrzWrld | April 16, 2009, 5:43 pm 5:43 pm

It is interesting to see the “right-wing” zealot responses to this story and how anyone who even examines the idea of secession is labeled as such. Welcome to the era of mobbing Republicans for any and all reasons. It has happened before and we’ve survived it nicely. In fact, we’ll grow from the experience.
To the main point: Given that eleven states seceded in the past Civil War years, one must at least concede that there were what we might call “left-wing” radicals in the form of “Red-Shirts” who were, in fact, Democrats. The “Red-Shirts” were, in fact, a para-military force that were pro-South and pro-Slavery. It is interesting to note once again that these were mostly Democrats.
So…. THESE are the folks who, in the past, advocated secession. For the most part… Democrats.
Perhaps this is a case, so to speak, of the pot calling the kettle black? One should examine one’s party history before casting aspersions at those they disagree with. Of course, given the Liberal history being taught in schools and with the truth being bent at all levels by the Liberal Left, it’s pretty clear that most younger minds are not aware of these rather interesting histories of their own party.
Fascinating… isn’t it?

I have already written the Gov with my disaproval. He went over the top trying to woo his fanatic base. I can’t believe these hypocrites. Anyone that opposed Bush’s policy of Torture was unpatriotic, but the Gov talking about the state leaving the nation is ok. It’s just them expressing themselves.
Instead of comming up with real alternitive ideas, they keep comming up with this crap. This idiot approved every spending bill the Bush administration and the republican congress dished out. He doesn’t talk about the 2 trillion dollar deficate we have just from the tax breaks to the rich that was supposed to trickle down the the common man. That debt is going to our children and grandchildren. Pretending seems to be the only thing these conservitive republicans can do. All of the sudden they are pretending to be fically responsible. They just don’t like the fact it is not them spending the money. Where was Perry when the Bush administration gave up the first 750 billion, and when the fed gave all the money to AIG while on Bush’s watch? It’s all pretend. I don’t want a person that plays Governer, I want one that is a Governer. This talk of leaving the country because things aren’t going your way is childish.

Greenlee obviously knows nothing about Texas. Texas has mountains, deserts, hill country, high plains, coastal plains, prairy land, and Pine Forrests.
We probably grow all the food that he eats, make all the gas that he uses in his car, produce the natural gas he burns in is furnace and stove. It has huge shipping ports that are used for importing and exporting goods. The United States would feel the sting. Just because Rick Perry is an IDIOT, does not mean the rest of the state is.
I mean Bush was an IDIOT and it doesn’t mean all Americans are.

I doubt very seriously that Texas would secede from the union even if it could. I am a native Texan and proud of it but I am also an American and very proud of that fact! I guess its time for all the Texas-bashers to come out of their holes or wherever they hide. Perry’s comments certainly excited them. Although the Texas-bashers don’t know it if Texas were to legally secede it would have very negative consquences for the US more than these small minded people can imagine. I have served in the US military and I will not idly stand by for anyone to threaten the United States of America or commit acts of terror!

These people are supposed to be the “rising stars” of the GOP? Wow. I guess it was like when Alf Landon and Barry Goldwater were “rising stars” of the GOP. Honestly, I think there is a Constitutional argument to be made about how much the federal gov’t can overstep its boundaries and infringe upon powers of the states, but, as usual, the Republicans have to take what could be a good issue for them and put a dose of lunacy into it. Instead of whining about this, why not sue the federal gov’t and let the courts decide whether the 10th Amendment is being violated? Oh wait…if the issue is negated, then the GOP can’t use it to fire up their base of mindless sheep. As for President Obama firing the CEO of GM, he had perfect right to do that because the gov’t a shareholder in that company. If you don’t want the federal gov’t telling you what to do, then don’t take money from it.

Obviously most of you know nothing about, or have never been to Texas (maybe Austin where I live, but not the rest of the state). First of all, Texas would do a MUCH better job protecting our own border than the US is doing right now. In fact, California, Arizona, and New Mexico would probably see their borders’ taken over as Texans would not allow an invasion if given the option, forcing all of the illegals and drugs through other states. Have fun with that one.
Also, on the secession note, we CAN legally secede. On the note above, part of the treaty we signed with the US back in 1845 states that as part of our agreement the US government must keep our border with Mexico secure. Since it clearly isn’t, we don’t have to secede at all! All we have to do is acknowledge that the liberals from the other end of the country think Mexicans (and worse) coming across our borders as they desire is perfectly fine. After we acknowledge that, the treaty is off and we are a Republic once more. Assuming we kept free trade with the US (best for both sides considering we have a lot of what you liberals need to fuel your daily lives), we would thrive as we could use about half the taxes we currently pay to fund our government. Have fun without our money, but don’t complain to us when you’re broke in a few years.

Does texas forget that their little boy Bush is the one that screwed this country up so bad over his failed presidency? Let the red necks go then. It will mean no more Busch family to mess things up! And wont they find it a little hard to do buisness and exist when the US then embargos the new Texas? And when we pull the military out? O wait they get hit by a hurricane who will they cry to for help? And I alomost forgot who will their NFL teams play aganst, eachother? I forgot they suck anyway!

Posted by: Bri | April 17, 2009, 10:26 am 10:26 am

Wow Bri. Learn some economics, look at some facts, and then get back to me. First of all, you can’t have a “failed presidency” unless you are kicked out, so stop using the term. Second, it’s the Bush family, not the Busch family (typical, you call us dumb?). Third, again if you knew anything about economics, the US can’t afford to embargo Texas. The US needs what we have to offer. Fourth, we don’t need your military, but you’ll need ours because many of the US military are from Texas and the biggest military base in the nation (along with MANY others) is in Texas, so you can take yours and we’ll take ours. Fifth, we cleaned up THREE hurricanes recently. Katrina in Louisiana because the liberal mayor in New Orleans couldn’t handle it, Rita, and Ike. Never did we whine and complain (we leave that to the academics that don’t know how to work). Finally, if the US did create an embargo on Texas, our college teams could become a new TFL along with our pro teams because more players come from Texas than any other state (by far).

It amazes me, that we have so much back-biting amongst the states. Are we not supposed to be united to at least SOME degree?
All I have read is bashing against Texas as a whole. Many keep stating that Texas is ALL republican and that is just not so.
There are MANY Texans here tired of the crap as well. Most of us DON’T care for Perry and the like, but that’s beside the point.
My point is this, stop bashing your countrymen. If you live in Michigan, is it the fault of the entire state if a governor or senator is out of line? Of course not. How about Maine? Tennessee? Wisconsin?
Politics are bad to begin with. They are ALL immoral if you ask me. I’ve only been in Texas a very short time…why do “I” have to be fenced in and cut off because you don’t like the same man that I don’t like? lol
Sheesh people, don’t be so hypocritical and ignorant. It’s not the people…and NO, not all people here voted for the man. Not all people here are republican either!! I work my tail off for what I get and damn proud of it. I’m damn proud to be American….
I’m certainly not proud to be associated with so many people ready to bash my head in just because of where I live. Good grief! Maybe YOU should secede and move to a state that promotes the judgemental without cause.

To everyone that says this is treason…IT’S NOT!! If you would read that Constitution and U.S. laws, would would find nothing, I repeat, NOTHING that outlaws or prohibits the right of a state to secceed from the United States. Vermont has voted and only narrowly defeated a measure that would have them secceed from the U.S., so it’s not just a Southern idea. And also how can it be treason? Secceession is deeply rooted in American culture. Did our Founding Fathers not secceed from Great Britan? The Declaration of Independence states, “Whenever any form of government becomes destructive, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it and to institute new government.” So while I personally think it is a bad idea, at the moment, it is by no means treason.

As an individual that has had the pleasure of living in Texas,I have observed a plitical mentality and state pride that has no comparison with any other state. Texas is more than a state, it is a mini country that is able to survive on its own. If you look at the state, one notices all of the features of a country: an independent school program different from all other states, large industrial centers, large agricultural centers, some of the finest universities in the US, an economy that is bustling and a culture with traditions all its own. Should it secede? With the 10th Amendment in mind, The great Texas Rupublic has every right to secede and become its own entity. This Amendment has been violated for many years and it is about time a state stands up to it. The Don’t Mess with Texas is more than a motto as we shall soon see.

I support Texas independence. I’ve lived here all 50 years. I was educated at TCU. My farm has been in the family since the civil war(which started over states rights, not slavery which entered the picture later, ie Fredrick Douglas). I even think Obama does a great job representing the federal government. But Texas can truly stand better on it’s own two feet minus Washington.

Posted by: Texas | April 17, 2009, 4:47 pm 4:47 pm

For once, Texas Governor Rick Perry is correct. Many conservative and libertarian Americans agree that the right of peaceful, democratic secession by state convention is a legitimate constitutional right of every state in the union.
There are only two solutions to the massive Washington national debt now threatening the economic future and prosperity of every productive American. One is peaceful secession on the state level from the Washington Empire leaving the illegitimate federal debts with the Washington and Wall Street interests who created the debts. The second alternative is a constitutional amendment by the states to cancel the Washington national debt. The cancel the Washington Debt by 12/21/2012 Constitutional Amendment is now online at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=67594690498&ref=ts

Texas won’t have to succeed. By the time God’s wrath is finished with this Nation, there won’t be much left to succeed from.It would be amusing if Texas and other states would succeed.Liberals are hedonistic cowards and would not be willing to fight. Many in the armed forces would desert before they would fight their own people. The new states could send all the illegals and criminals they have to the blue states. I see all all these comments about whether or not Texas can secede from the USSA. Those comments are not worth a cup of warm spit. Sorry, but real Texans will make that decision.
The ONLY question that must be answered is: If some of us are willing to die to leave the USSA, are some of you and/or your children willing to die to keep us? Everyone reading this blog knows the answer to that question.
If you want your children to live in a free Capitalist county, then come/stay and join us. Those of you that want someone to take care of you, please leave before we drive you out. You only have a few years to make that decision. After that, the fence on the South, West, North, East built to keep all socialist out will be completed.
You can be living with us in a country that NOW has the 15th largest GDP on the planet. Think of what it can be in 10-20 years.
Also:
Every real Texan knows they are required to have weapons and ammunition.
Plenty of oil for our own use. Who do you think refines all that oil into gasoline? We will let others have it for an additional $1.00 per gallon export tax.
No toy cars built by the USSA government.
No cap and trade.
No 10-20% VAT tax that is coming to the USSA.
No criminals released to prey on us.
Great ports.
Practice religion as you choose.
Who do think runs most of the Military bases we have? The boys we have fighting overseas will be coming home. Want to do battle with them?
And several dozen other advantages . . .
And a few disadvantages we can handle . . .

The reason all you people in Blue States are so against a Red State ever leaving is because you know that without the working people in this nation all of you who don’t work would literally die of starvation.
The simple truth is that if we continue to pursue “progressive” policies of redistribution of wealth sooner or later everyone will quit working because our desire to work harder and achieve more will have been completely destroyed.
I can say that with confidence because despite being historically one of the hardest working people I know, I am just about ready to throw in the towell and join the welfare roles myself.
If nobody plants any corn this year, then next year we will all be dead. That’s the only reason I keep working, but when enough of us take take take everything from the government, sooner or later there wont be enough people left growing corn to feed us all.
I am a slightly right of center libertarian. I dont want to quit the country, I dont want to force anyone else to support me, I have never taken anything from the government. I work hard, and I’m not rich, but I make enough to support myslef and my family. I dont want to interfere with anyone else. I dont want to tell anyone in New York how they should live. I dont want anyone in New York to tell me how to live either. I want to be left alone to work and support myself, and not forced to support others who dont work to support themselves.
We really dont want to leave the Union we just want to be left alone. We want to pay our taxes too, we just dont want the money wasted.
Remember one thing…. the government cant give anything to anyone that they dont first take from someone else. Knowing that, can anyone really feel right about asking the government to give them anything? I can’t.

There are a lot of emotions on this post, but a couple of things should be clarified. Texas joined the Union prior to the Civil War and was an independent country for around 10 years. It had it’s own Constitution and still does. When Texas joined the union, it held the right to leave the Union in its own Constitution.
I’m a Texan, not a Republican nor Democrat, and have been to almost all the states and see their people. All have their own steers and queers, beer and rednecks of some sort, and white coats are prevalent in the far North. So I’m not offended by the remarks of the uninformed, or people who’ve never even been here.
Anyway, it’s just politics. Texans won’t let politics rule its state. The people do. Perry has been throwing rocks at Obama from the start. But he should keep his own bed made and his nose clean if he wants to keep doing it.

You people can make fun all you want- but don’t forget Texas has got the space program, one of the largest and best hospitals in the US, refines 80 percent of America’s oil, and has enough farmland to become self-sufficient. Didn’t we fight a war over this a while ago? Now those in the “party of Lincoln” want to leave the Union. Good luck with that.

As a fellow Texan, most of the comments made here are just plan bigotry. Typical liberal to spew hate and never any facts. They only enjoy Freedom of Speech if that Speech is something they want to hear. Not everyone in Texas is a Perry fan. Not every Texan owns a horse, does meth, drinks beer and lives in a trailor park. We have one of the BEST ecoonomies right now and people are moving here left and right for work. If you dont like Perry, that is fine, but stereotyping every Texas is just plain ignorant.
