The Poop on the Puppy
First Tweens Malia and Sasha Obama will be receiving their first pet on Tuesday, a 6-month-old Portuguese Water Dog they’ve chosen to name "Bo."
The puppy, a gift from Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass. — who has two Portuguese Water Dogs — is from a hypoallergenic breed, a must because of Malia’s allergies.
When the Obama girls met Bo a few weeks ago, Malia had no allergic reaction.
Because the dog is a pure-bred, and not from a pound, the Obama parents will also be making a donation to the DC Humane Society.
The dog is named in homage to a cousin’s pet named Bo and First Lady Michelle Obama’s late father, who was nicknamed "Diddly."
The "story" of Bo was first reported exclusively by the Washington Post.

Another day ABC spends on the dumb pooch…
Must not be anything else worth reporting about…oh wait… other media are reporting about more banks failing, more foreclosures… hmmmm… but ABC has 2 stories on the dumb pooch.
Wait a joke of a news channel.

It sure is sweet to have little children in our White House again. These precious children make everything seem so new and hopeful, and dogs are just such a joy.
Very nice, light blog post for an Easter morning. Thanks Jake.

Dear “Im”
Actually to date (82 days into the presidency) President Obama has kept 23 campaign promises and broken 5, you see people who actually care about this country hold leaders accountable for what they say vs. what they deliver. People who care about this country also do research for themselves and not just regurgitate something that they heard from talk radio.
So what I am basically saying “Im” is if ignorance were cornflakes, you would be General Mills.
Happy Easter to you!

Can you imagine what we would be reading about George Bush if he had been doing dog deals while there was a pirate hostage taking going on ?

I think O’Babble should deliver the dog to the pirates. He’s giving them all they need to keep them happy until they land on shore and disappear; maybe he could work a trade. Community Organizers are good at this sort of thing.

Another broken promise. He went to a breeder!! The only thing Obama cares about is himself and his family. He has no problem sleeping nights knowing there are a million dogs in shelters right now. The y are arrogant and egotistical.

Seeing as how the over-hyped animal’s a cousin to Kennedy’s dogs, his name’s probably REALLY “Beau”.
Sad to see the Last Kennedy become the bagman for ANOTHER pr performance for the “Obama” cult.

And it’s only coincidence that “BO” are also Obama’s initials? I suppose because so many have believed the rest of the crap he’s fed you, that this will be an easy one.
No, there’s no ego at play here.

“He went to a breeder!!”
Nooo … pore ole Kennedy did THAT dirty work.
The only possible BRIGHT side of the dog show is that the royal canine carries the same name as VP Biden’s son.
It’s so … dyNAStic.

why all this drama over a dog? it’s simple, he doesn’t have the luxury of getting any dog because of his daughter’s allergies. i’m sure her health and well being is more important to him than pleasing bunch of skeptical people who will always find something to complain about. so not only does he do right by his daughters but to add cherry on top, he donates to the humane society. what is there to complain about??!!

“Because”!? Negotiating with “terrorists” again?
Well, that’s the Chicago Way, though the Obamas’ stinginess with “charity” became well-known during the early stages of His perpetual campaign.

“why all this drama over a dog?”
To distract the easily-amused from Afghanistan, Pakistan, no National Health, the Treasury give-away, pirates and tea parties?

I’m surprised they don’t unveil the dog on wednesday to hide the tea parties going on all over the nation. The media sure would rather focus on that dog.

I heard Biden rescued the captain from the pirates all by himself. He swam up to the ship and took out all four of them. Obama would have but he can’t swim.

The dog was originally named CHARLIE, according to the Post!? Kind of a tin ear THERE for non-Hawaiian “black” slang.
How LIKE Der One ALREADY to have changed the dog’s name. Can we hope for MORE canine “change” before the … gasp … poor animal’s ACTUAL, FINAL arrival, two days from now?

“I’m surprised they don’t unveil the dog on wednesday to hide the tea parties going on all over the nation.”
Maybe He won’t show the dog to the press UNTIL Wednesday … after all, He’s already milked the dog story for a year or more.
Or the dog can DO something, for the second-day story: bite or become allergic to one of the children, dig up the Potemkin garden, catch one of the pesky wild animals that roam the White House grounds, chew up the swing set.
The hokum possibilities are endless. It’ll distract people from the Navy calling in the FBI over the “pirates”, and the … Kenya connection.

When Obama laments about all that he inherited from Bush I hope he remembers to praise the US Navy–Obama inherited them.

How much do they cost?
Prices will normally start at about $1400 US. So in an economic crisis where so many homeowners across America have to abandon their dogs and cats because they are either living on the streets, in parking lots, or with relatives, Mr. Obama chooses not to help any of these animals. Nor does he choose to help the millions at dog kennels waiting to be executed if they do not find homes. Mr. Obama does not care about his image because he has control over the press and they will paint his image “great” no matter what.

“Bo had been living with another family, but it wasn’t a good fit, so the Kennedys acquired him for the Obamas.”
Sheesh: Kennedy gave the Obamas a USED dog, named “Charlie”? Maybe his brain’s come back.
If the dog is SAID to be six months old, AND has “been receiving lessons in good behavior from the Kennedys’ dog trainers”, he’s a young dog, but not really a “puppy” in any of the ways that make people go “aaawwwww”.
On the other hand, Distraction Dog’s latest name is now reported to have come from Mr. Robinson’s supposed nickname of “Diddley”. Don’t believe THAT information — or disinformation as may be — had previously been loosed on the public.

Maria, why would you think it was named after Biden’s son? His initials are B.S.
Posted by: sarah | April 12, 2009, 4:51 pm 4:51 pm
To those who complain about the folks waxing cynical about the whole BO phenomenon, I would like to point out that there is a long tradition of obsessive attention to WH pets and an equally long tradition of folks grousing about the attention and the motivations of the presidents for having said pets. Do you really think such criticism was invented when Obama took office?
I will not simply reverse things and say, “Bush’s dog was the subject of ridicule and cynicism, too”– although that is very true. But I will first point out that Clinton caught grief over his lab puppy, Buddy. He got tons of publicity, announced the new pup’s name at a press conference, and trotted out little Buddy a lot in the ensuing months when the Lewinsky scandal was going full bore (Buddy was a Christmas gift from Hillary and the Lewinsky scandal got rolling early the next year) and he was accused of using the pet as a diversion for the press and public, even though the family got the dog to ease the sadness over Chelsea’s departure for Stanford.
Then came Barney. And the left was as rough on the dog as they were on the rest of the Bush family. I remember the hubbub on Daily Kos and Democrat Underground over the Barney CHristmas videos, don’t you? How dare the Bushes waste time and energy on such nonsense when there was an evil war going on? And some bloggers took real delight in ragging on the WH dog– like the posts joking that Bush was going to have Barney stuffed and sent to AFrica to inspire conservation of wild animals (can’t remember how that made any sense) . Bush once dropped Barney on his (the dog’s) head and wow, the jokes and the criticism flew. There was even a doggie t-shirt being sold that said, “Bush is a great president… for me to poop on.”
So I don’t think critics of the latest WH dog news are inventing the wheel here. Every president gets similar treatment.

“Change” you can Believe In Or Not:
The “gift” statement seems to have been er repurposed: the second-hand dog is perhaps no LONGER to be described as “a gift” from Kennedy … since it is/was not exactly seemly or legal for a senator to bestow a dog which cost thousands of dollars upon Der CHANGEling.

Disappointed, I think you miss the point when you write defending the president for not getting a shelter dog because of Malia’s allergies. You said, “…it’s simple, he doesn’t have the luxury of getting any dog because of his daughter’s allergies. i’m sure her health and well being is more important to him than pleasing bunch of skeptical people who will always find something to complain about.” Then you praise him for donating to the Humane Society.
Let me point out that it was Obama himself who pushed the shelter dog angle all along the way. Yes, I know he was being pressured, inappropriately in my opinion, by animal groups to adopt a shelter animal. But he talked about his family’s desire to get a shelter dog– perhaps “a mutt like me” in his own words– even after acknowledging the constraints of Malia’s allergy problems. Numerous animal group spokespeople and cable tv talking heads have made clear that it is as easy to get a hypoallergenic (as much as that is actually possible) dog from a shelter as from a breeder. As a volunteer at my local shelter for over a decade now, I can attest to the truth of that. If you do a simply google search, you will discover scads of stories praising the Obamas for planning to adopt from a shelter.
So conveniently, the dog winds up being a gift from Ted Kennedy. How could they turn Uncle Teddy down? So they don’t have to “settle” for a shelter dog. And they do an appropriate thing– give a donation to the humane society– but could they not have given the money AND adopted from a shelter? It would have given such adoptions a real PR boost, as silly as that sounds.
I can’t speak for others, but for myself, I am not going to get too worked up over the new first pup, but I am going to sigh deeply at the missed opportunity. I work with shelter dogs every week and I know that the monetary donation, as helpful as it is, will not have the same effect. Shelters are crowded and when there are more dogs than spaces, dogs are put to sleep. It’s a sad reality. Obama can’t change that all by himself and I don’t expect him to do so. But after he raised expectations, I hope you can understand, “disappointed,” why some do complain when those expectations are not met.
Posted by: moderate | April 12, 2009, 5:32 pm 5:32 pm
SO far, the Washington Post piece by Manuel Roig-Franzia still says the dog is a “gift” from Kennedy:
“The little guy is a 6-month-old Portuguese water dog given to the Obama girls as a gift by that Portuguese water dog-lovin’ senator himself, Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts.”
Ah, but what will the Post piece say by Monday? (That’s the trouble with digital “news” … which is subject to retroactive alteration as the requirements of those in power wax and wane.)

” … he talked about his family’s desire to get a shelter dog– perhaps “a mutt like me” in his own words– even after acknowledging the constraints of Malia’s allergy problems.”
Le plus ca change! He baited the publicity trap with “a mutt like me”, then switched to an uber-WASP pedigreed pooch which comes complete with a sketchy social history and reflected Kennedy celebrity.
That’s how Der Won does everything, from wars, to bailouts, to gardening. You can’t believe a blinking word He says on ANY subject.
Wait’ll He has Gibbs explain how the dog WASN’T really a “gift”, AFTER all.

I think that you should point out when you report about this puppy that it did come back to the breeder from the first home it was sold to (because an older dog did not want a puppy around), thus while not officially a “shelter dog”, it was similar to it in the pure-bred world, where most dogs go back to the breeder, not to shelters, and the breeder was responsible in finding the puppy a new home. Also that the whole litter was named with the hope and change theme- the dog’s registered name is “Amigo’s New Hope” is an interesting take.

Google The Humane Society of the United States..[HSUS]….you will find they have ’0′ shelters….none….nada….they are in fact the wealthiest animal rights group in America…..lobbying for restrictions to animal ownership everywhere they can….
“Animal Shelters” are the organizations that do the down and dirty rescues…
You should also know that ‘breeders clubs around the country operate rescues and rehoming for their respective breeds….
just type in a breed with the word ‘rescue’ you will find a place to aquire any breed you could be interested in…..operated by ‘responsible’ breeders…..

The OBAMAS never had a dog growing up, and the kids are allergic to dogs. NEVER HAD A DOG. NOT ANY OF THEM. BUT suddenly, the OBAMAS FEEL that they needed to get a dog. For family values? I laugh at that poster who said that was the aim. I’d say PUBLICITY. Showing americans that they care about dogs and that idyllic family portrait of a family and its dog(WHEN THEIR HISTORY SHOWS THEY NEVER GAVE A HOOT BEFORE)? NOT.
