‘This Week’ Roundtable: Diplomatic Emergency
News that North Korea tested a long-range ballistic missile today in defiance of the United States and United Nations Security Council resolutions dominated our "This Week" Roundtable discussion.
The test presents President Barack Obama with his first global security and diplomatic crisis.
Here’s what our Roundtable guests – former George W. Bush speechwriter David Frum, Council on Foreign Relations’ Richard Haass, Huffington Post’s Arianna Huffington, ABC’s Martha Raddatz and George Will — had to say:
Plus, their assessment of Obama’s European debut:

I watched a rerun of Friday’s Moyer’s program. Probably more to the point than this bunch.

I happened to watch Nwet Gingrich this morning on FOX–not somewhere i usually go for my news, but I wanted to hear what axelrod had to say on the economy…which is what most americans are thinking about today…and the rest of the stations are covering the G20 and Korea…Newt said that had he been in charge…HE would have used the US missle power to take out the Korean launch..I gather hit N Korean soil with it..start a world war apparently…that was the scariest thing I have heard in a long time..maybe he is trying to outdo Cheney as master of the universe..If this is Newts idea of world deplomacy –we should all be worried about him making a run in 1012..

I was frankly astounded by the lack of insight about Obama’s trip to Europe on display in your rooundtable, George. It sounded like a neo-con kaffeeklatsch. Who are these people kidding? I don’t expect much more from George Will or from…Frum, but Martha Raddatz ought to know better. The whole game has changed, and it isn’t about getting Europeans to send a bunch of troops to Afghanistan. And there never was a big push by Obama leading up to the trip to get serious internal economic stimulus packages guaranteed by the Europeans. In the last weeks that mantra became a figment of reporters’ imaginations. (As Obama and others have pointed out, Europeans already invest far more in there economies than we do by the nature of their social safety net.) And George Will’s pedantry about how there is always going to be conflict was inane. It isn’t about “conflict” it’s about short and long term interests, which can lead to conflict. It has always (underlined) been a matter of state interest. But Obama is looking so much further down the road than any of the last three administrations (make that four)it’s silly. No body expected miracles, just reason. That we got in abundance. Fortunately, your guests are only spectators.

Where is our Secratary of State? I have yet to see her do anything!! Maybe she should be doing her job rather than sitting back and letting Obama handle North Korea and othe diplomatic concerns.

I really don’t know about this.
Using common sense to describe a policy of mutual benefit, rather that dicktating (intentional sp) /demanding a stipulated course without any input from the receiving party.
A paradigm that will probably be received well through the shock and awe of its boldness!
America is once again a World leader! Thank you Mr. President!
