Today’s Qs for O’s WH – 4/17/2009
Aboard Air Force One en route to Mexico City, White House press secretary came back to "gaggle" with us, though he said the gaggle could not be on camera.
Here are the two questions I asked during the gaggle.
TAPPER: First of all, just for the record, I’d like to voice my objection to this being off camera, on behalf of the TV people. President Obama has said that it’s –
GIBBS: To be on camera, Jake, you’d have to comb your hair. (Laughter.)
TAPPER: No, I wouldn’t –
GIBBS: — for the record.
TAPPER: — the camera would be on you. The camera would be on you.
ANOTHER REPORTER: It’s the Air Force One look. (Laughter.)
TAPPER: The President wants to stem the flow of guns going south of the border. It doesn’t seem as though that this administration is willing to do much or spend much politically to pass any new guns laws. What can be done to stem the flow, as you’ve said is your goal?
GIBBS: Well, I think, first and foremost, it is to enforce particularly the laws that we have on the books, especially those related to the trafficking of arms. You’ll hear the President talk about this today, I’m sure. Attorney General Holder and Secretary Napolitano attended a conference on arms trafficking in this region, dealing with this region of the world over the past few weeks. The Department of Justice is relocating agents to the border to ensure that the trafficking of arms doesn’t happen. And you’ll see the President talk today about ensuring that there’s a strong and strict review of all of our laws and regulations relating to movement of arms south of the border. I think obviously part of what Secretary Napolitano outlined a few weeks ago demonstrates our commitment to far stronger inspections of items that are moving from north to south, as well as moving from south to north…
TAPPER: Robert, in terms of stemming the demand for drugs in the United States, what can be done more on that? What does the President want to do there?
GIBBS: Well, I think there’s — in stemming the rising tide of illegal drugs, there’s obviously two ways to do it. One is there is — is to try to deal with the problem not just as a — not simply as a law enforcement problem but also as a treatment problem. And the President has certainly talked about that before. But there’s also — and I think this relates also to border security — and that is a hefty investment in the recovery and reinvestment plan of additional police officers on the streets of America.

Too bad you didn’t ask about Rick Perry. I liked to hear Gibbs talk that nut case.

Here is the dirty little secret about how American guns end up in the hands of the drug cartels,
The US Goverment sells guns to the Mexican Army. The CORRUPTION within the military causes many of the guns to be SOLD to the drug cartels.
Also, many from the Mexican military end up JOINING the drug cartels because the pay is better.
So yes, the drug cartels do have many American made guns , BECAUSE our Government SOLD THEM to the Mexican Military,

Look guys, drugs would not come to this country if there was no demand. We are the problem. Controlling the guns ?? Ha!We had thousands of gun control laws and nothing will stop the criminals from getting them. We can’t put everybody in jail !Jails are full ( 3 millions of inmates) and the crime continues. So it’s within ourselfs that the change has to come. We can have the entire army out there and the criminals will always find the way to bring the drugs and get the guns.

Why the apologies to Mexico for our constitutional choice to own arms? Barak Obama goes to Mexico to discuss its huge drug trafficking problem and turns the issue into an anti-gun attack on America. The World is awash in assault weapons and Mexico will, as they do with cocaine, easily obtain the commodity from someone other than the U.S. If assault weapons were illegal in the U.S. there is no question that Mexico would be the number one illegal supplier of them to us.

Jake, I am suprised you let Gibbs get away with his answer to drug demand in the US. It sounded like it was out of a page from My Little Pony.

According to Senator John Kerry,
“Only about one out of every four weapons seized by Mexican authorities last year was submitted to the ATF so they could be traced back to purchasers and sellers in the United States. The Mexican government should provide the ATF with fuller access to these weapons.”
On the other hand, it is the State Department that issues approval for arms exports, and according to their 2007 report, “…only 705 end-use checks were initiated on approved DCS exports worldwide while some 81,000 ‘license applications and other export requests’ were acted on by the State Department during that year.”
DCS stands for Direct Commercial Sales.
$1 billion in defense hardware was approved for export to Mexico via private U.S. companies between fiscal year 2004 and fiscal year 2007
the State Department since January 2007 initiated only three end-use inquiries involving the export of firearms to Mexico
