Twittering With Oprah

Had some fun "welcoming" Oprah to Twitter today — even though my wife only had eyes for Ashton Kutcher and I can’t come close (yet!) to matching his million plus followers. Kutcher made a good point about how twitter has the potential to open up political debate in the media.   That’s what I like most about Twitter.    Joining the Twitter conversation helps me figure out what viewers want to hear from politicians and policymakers, another tool for holding the powerful accountable. So, what questions do you all have for Rahm Emanuel and John Boehner — my exclusive guests on "This Week" Sunday? –George Stephanopoulos Follow George Stephanopoulos on Twitter, friend George on Facebook, and bookmark George’s Bottom Line blog.

Hey George,
I guess Oprah on twitter would be world news with Charles Gibson.
You guys are stupid people, world news is about world not US, and you guys pick stupid topics for the World news.

George why are you not following up on some of the money that was put out for bill on some of these companys and report on what they are spending our money on? Also why isn’t the jobs going to roads instead I find its going on all kind of things and our roads have not got a dime. Why do we need to fund stuiped things our governer in Utah is put some of that money on a dam fence to hold out deer and elk instead he could put it into repairing our need Highways? is so dam wasteful!! whats up with all of this.

I’d like to know if they can agree on credit card reform. The fees and practices are hurting us all…rich or poor, good credit or not!

Gee Gayle,
If you want people to pay attention to your comments, try using proper grammar and spelling.

I’m glad you’re on twitter and always read what you post.
I would like one question to be asked of the people participating in the tea bag events. First let me say that I’m assuming most of these people make less than $250,000 a year. Would someone please ask them what makes them think their taxes are being raised. Then they also need to be asked why they weren’t screaming while President Bush was borrowing from China and spending money on an illegal war.
Thank you George.

Although i do think the quality of news reporting in our country is really bad, I do have to respond to the person above who posted quotes. I want back to check, and the quotes are all from the entertainment section.
But really, Oprah on twitter is newsworthy?

Posted by: mella | April 17, 2009, 2:33 pm 2:33 pm

George,
why don’t you do a show on “Respecting the presidency is what we call Patriotism”

Posted by: pau | April 17, 2009, 2:39 pm 2:39 pm

1)Can you please ask Rahm how or what he did to make over $20 million in 2 years on Wall St?
2)Can you ask Rahm what the Obama admin would have done on 9/10/2001 if they had KSM in custody and knew he had knowledge of the impending attack the next day, yet wouldn’t talk?
And to follow up,would they have gone out to the podium and told the American people that, despite the carnage, our moral principles were upheld because we didn’t waterboard KSM?

Let me explain what I heard at the Atlanta Tea event-
1) Most people didn’t make more than $250k, but they were worried about the govt going into debt by the tune of $9.3 trillion in the next 10 yrs (CBO estimate)
2) They generally agreed the bailouts for all industries were bad (finance, banking, auto, etc)
3) They all seem to agree that govt ‘spends and taxes too much’
I’d say that was the gist of it…I was there.Go to flickr and read the signs yourself.
Doesn’t seem so ‘right wing’ to me…who can’t agree that the govt wasn’t a good steward of your tax money for these bailouts?
Who can’t agree that borrowing loads more money when you are already in debt is a good idea?
(except paul krugman)
The govt DOES spend alot of money..the govt DOES tax alot (at every level).
You focus on the FEDERAL income tax, which is one of dozens of federal taxes.

I thought the news was supposed to be unbias. ABC once again is showing their bias towards the left. It is amazing that they aren’t even trying to hide it anymore. I now get my news from the fair and unbiased Fox News!

Posted by: susan | April 17, 2009, 2:59 pm 2:59 pm

I would like you to encourage that something be done about the companies who rate and score credit improperly and find out why these formulas are secret. . Since your credit score can affect every facet of your life now, from car insurance to being able to rent an apartment, I think transparency of the who and how this ratings and scores are computed should be the new standard.

Sorry ABC, the day that Oprah decided to use her popularity to support a socialist candidate for president, we stopped watching her on TV and stopped buying the products of those who finance her show.

Posted by: Mihann | April 17, 2009, 3:46 pm 3:46 pm

I wonder if Oprah realizes that she is still on the boycott list in a lot of American homes because she chose to use her show as a biased political platform and then a pulpit for her religious views?

Thanks for asking, George! I would like to know what the administration is going to do with regard to credit card companies and capping the fees and interest rates that they can charge, because logically, it follows that people will be leaning on their credit cards as times get tough economically. That can snowball out of control quickly for people, if fees and rates are allowed to just go up and up.

Posted by: Michelle | April 17, 2009, 4:30 pm 4:30 pm

i aggree credit cards are out of control!!!!

Can extra taxes help the economy return to its normal pace? Too much taxes for too many unemployed in this country!

Posted by: diana | April 17, 2009, 5:13 pm 5:13 pm

If the tea parties were really all about what J House wants us to believe I would like to know why we saw a flood of signs with racial undertones:
“Osama Bin Lyin” was just one example.
No matter how anyone would like to spin it into a positive, this had less to do with future taxes and all to do with racism. Those who lost the election just cannot get their heads around the fact that a black man was elected President by a victory margin of 7% in popular votes (way more than Bush got in both of his “victories”) and a landslide in electoral votes (I am listing the official results so no one can come up with some bs explanation to dispute them).
Popular votes:
Obama: 69,498,216 or 52.87%
McCain: 59,948,240 or 45.61%
Electoral votes:
Obama: 365 or 67.8%
McCain: 173 or 32.2%
It is truly a shame that we still live in a country of such bigotry and intolerance. And the constant mentioning of out founding fathers only shows the lack of history knowledge!

Posted by: ChrisB | April 17, 2009, 5:24 pm 5:24 pm

J House – You are right in your assessment and it is imperative to understand the reason why such a desperate action had to be implemented.
I am going to go through your argument point by point.
I will try and explain my point from my background as an accountant.Financial Reporting has been an area which has proven to be quite difficult in coming to an international agreement hence the false accounting and reporting.
1) America has something good to her advantage – people and moreso stability and the unlimited resources to bounce back never underestimate that.
In accounting terminology there comes a time when this debts are written off – I am going to keep it simple and not go further-
2)The bailout for those industries was necessary to keep them afloat as you must have learnt some of them are slowly showing signs of recovery. What the Government failed to assess was the extent of human greed and human motives.
In Economics according to Keynes there comes a time for intervention- this happens to be one of those times – The banks lost trust in each other and were more or less going to hold the country to ransom by not loaning each othe money and the Government had to step in.
The banks when healthy again will be returning the money.
3) I couldn’t agree more but we have got to be realistic – most jobs created by the Govenment doesn’t pay much – but jobs it does create, it gives one a sense of dignity and purpose. I work for a private sector and at times I wonder why no one appears to be bothered about how much one gets paid – knowing full well that the salary you are earning could also benefit another family if renumeration were fairly assesed and paid. If that were a possibilty imagine how many more people would be encouraged to pursue their dreams.
I am nt saying the Governments actions have been right to date but one thing I am cetain about is that they have the right intentions – tough decisions for now but in the long term I am sure more people would see the wisdom in some of the Governments decision.
Righr now my analogy would be that of a wild fire which needs to all the water or whatever to stop the fire spreading by. I can assure you that this Government would see to it that the factors that created the upset are removed.
I am an Independent but for once in a long time I am now understanding politics and I do thank President Obama for that and in all sincerity I do understand what he is trying to accomplish. -
Please bear in mind that my frame of reference has been accounting and economics
In the meantime can all be patient and remain optimistic.

Tea party people would be credible in making their point that we are being overtaxed if they were saying this a year ago or so. It is unbelievable that these same people did not say a word while “W” was spending billions a month in Iraq at the urging of Chaney and his Halliburton associates.

Posted by: christopher | April 17, 2009, 6:56 pm 6:56 pm

Please ask why they can’t have a tax of 10% straight accross the board? We will never really fix it. Or it would hurt the rich! We are so over taxed.

Posted by: Gayle | April 17, 2009, 7:38 pm 7:38 pm

George, I never miss your show; please ask them to get Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac to allow re-fi’s on investment properties. I currently have a good rate on an ARM, always knowing that I could re-fi. Now the banks and lenders tell me Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac have discontinued all re-fi’s on investment properties. I will be in deep doo-doo soon if I cannot refinance this property (everything will go downhill and I’ll become one of the bad statistics). I have excellent credit and have never missed a payment on this property that I have had over 9 years(or on anything). Why can’t I get a re-finance?? I am not a risk at all!!

Ask Rahm why do the banks get billions of our taxpayer dollars and all my 86 year old mother gets is two hundred and fifty dollars. I find that insulting.

Please ask someone how Bank of America can receive bailout money from the taxes I pay and then turn around and increase the APR on my credit card? Am I paying Bank of America more money so they can pay back the bailout loan or pay bonuses to Executives? Will the government take those loan recovery monies and decrease my taxes? I feel as if I keep paying and paying and paying for bad decisions and greedy corporations.

Posters here can make all the fun they want at an American’s right to peacefully asemble and express their views.
I had no problem with anti-war or G20 protesters.
Those ‘racists’ at the tea party event (as one poster decribed) included moms and dads with their kids just wondering how we’re going to pay for all of this spending..real radical ‘right wing’ folks, all right.
The problem with the left is that for all the tolerance they proclaim to have, they cannot tolerate dessent from their views.
Start free thinking for yourself.I wasn’t a Bush supporter, and many at the rally weren’t either. It had as much to do with Congress’ irresponsibility than Obama.
I don’t care who is President. Who is going to pay the interest on $10 trillion in spending? If you think we can get it all from rich people, you need to study harder in school.

Posted by: J House | April 18, 2009, 11:58 am 11:58 am

yep, I studied hard, and I can spell ‘dissent’ and ‘assemble’…my bluetooth keyboard just sucks.

Posted by: J House | April 18, 2009, 12:01 pm 12:01 pm

FOr the poster that wrote ‘the bailout was necessary’…what proof do you have?
The founder and past CEO of AIG said in his congress. testimony that AIG didn’t need a bailout. He is also one of its largest stockholders.
The banks (and investment banks) took the money because it was a good deal for them…can’t you tell by this qtrs results? (Citi, Goldman, JP Morgan, etc)
You equated our move towards a deeper US debt as ‘like pouring water on a spreading fire’.
It is more like pouring gasoline on a spreading fire.

Posted by: J House | April 18, 2009, 12:07 pm 12:07 pm

Since when is having moms and children at rallies a sign for non racist activity??? That’s complete nonsense. What? Only guys are racists??? I would think that the signs those protesters held up, which were targeted directly at President Obama, and reflected racism LOUD and CLEAR reflected the overall sentiment!

I enjoy your program every Sunday AM..
I really enjoy it. Keep it going.

Posted by: Jane Smith | April 18, 2009, 3:59 pm 3:59 pm

ChrisB,
You mean signs like ‘no more bailouts’ and ‘don’t tax me bro’?
I saw one sign in Atlanta that was critical of Obama said ‘who is barry sotero?’…that is racist?
Osama bin lyin? that is racist? What does that sign have to do with Obama (I never saw it among the thousands of anti-tax and spend signs I did see.)
You are clueless…even the liberal AJC didn’t find racism in the protests…wonder why?
Go to Flickr and READ the signs yourself…when you can find a racist one from the Atlanta rally, please post the link here.
Prove to the other posters that I must be lying.
There is no point tryng to convince you anyway…you don’t want to argue facts.

Posted by: J House | April 18, 2009, 6:20 pm 6:20 pm

Obama is doing a good job, people leave him alone.
Racist should have went out along time ago.We all bleed red and we are all human and let us get our heads out of the sand and just look around, this is the greatest country in the world and some Americans don’t appreciate what we have.
Go live over in some other country if this is not your cup of tea.Obama and Chavez was a great moment and won’t you be surprised if we become friends,as we should and change this hatred and get along and Obama can bow if he so chooses and I love him for it.
Someone has to be first even if it is Obama, trying to have love for all as it should be.Where are the tea party morals at?Stand up for peace and alot more will get done.Even a little old Ky. girl knows this much.Love is the best policy and shake hands and bow if you feel like it;why the hell not?

Posted by: Jacqueline Carpenter | April 18, 2009, 6:51 pm 6:51 pm

Jacq,
I’m not sure what you mean by ‘when we become friends’?
Do you know we already buy Ven. oil by the millions of barrels? We’re friends, alright.
Ven. is no threat to the U.S. Chavez is no threat to the U.S. (that is why Bush ignored him)
If it makes you feel good to see the US President play friends with folks like Chavez, then by all means, feel good about it.
All in all, it doesn’t make a bit of difference whether he likes us or not.
U.S. needs Ven oil….Ven needs US dollars.
We’ll see where playing nice with the leaders of Iran and NK get us…that DOES make a difference.
Last time I checked, NK just threw out UN nuclear inspectors and are planning to increase their nuclear stockpile.
Looks like the ball is in the President’s court.

George do you ever Twitter with Condo Rice?

Posted by: Ron M. | April 19, 2009, 6:10 am 6:10 am

Hello. I have always admired Mr. Stephanopoulos but today my stomach is turning today. I’m viewing the April 19, 2009, roundtable and hearing each of the commentators referring to President Barack Obama as simply ‘Obama’. The only commentator calling him President Obama is Sam Donaldson. Why is this? Also I noticed he’s referred to as ‘Obama’ a lot on this website.

Posted by: Helen | April 19, 2009, 11:26 am 11:26 am

Was that Boehner guy “drunk”? I’m serious…he sounded so out of touch and plain ignorant about the environment and how clean sources of energy will help preserve our country in health and our dependency on Middle Eastern oil, and the positive effects this will have on people’s lives, for “our children and their children”. This is his line, isn’t it?

Oprah on Twitter..and so what?
I see a person, with 543,943 Followers, and she follows ONLY …10 people? And one of them it’s you? Why?
For promotion, right?
Dear Sir, that’s ridiculousness.
Even you, with 450,030 Followers, are you Following just 8,251 only.
