If Pelosi is telling the truth then in the name of “transparency and disclosure” she should have no problem allowing an investigation to prove her innocence. If she did know this was happening and is now lying about it, well then it is time for her to step down. If she is telling the truth then someone at the CIA needs to go to jail.

Madame Speaker has been vocal about criminalizing and prosecuting all involved with waterboarding.
It is an important bit of information if she did, in fact, know about it ahead of time. Given that other staff have contradicted her statements (which have contradicted themselves), the facts certainly indicate that Pelosi is lying. And Gingrich is right on this one: she is either lying, or an incompetent fool. Or both, as the case may be.
Those of you defending her on this are really about as partisan and round the bend as it gets. Forget about which side of the aisle you’re on for just a moment, and recognize that the House Speaker lying about national security issues is a really bad thing.
And if anybody else did it as well, it’s a bad thing, regardless of whether an R or a D resides next to their names.

Even Leon Panetta, Obama’s appointee to head the CIA and Clintonite, supports the CIA’s version of events here. If the CIA really did lie, why is it that Pelosi chose NOW to use that defense after her third attempt to explain away discrepancies?? Say what you want about Newt, but he is spot on with his observation that Pelosi’s only defense is that she is incompetent or dishonest. Unfortunately, this applies to many of our politicians on both sides of the aisle.

Watching Nancy Pelosi and her press conference yesterday, she does not pass the “impartial jury” test with me. I just plain don’t believe her.
It’s a good thing Nancy is not in court, explaining why the light was green and not red, or why it was not HER fingerprints on that gun, etc.

The CIA is Republican?? Anybody remember they torpedoed Bush at any chance? The estimate Iran was years from a nuke? Elements of the CIA were involved in undermining the Bush administration’s justification for going to war in Iraq. The CIA is not right wing and not monolithic.
The point of this whole question of whether she knew about it or not goes to how we apply our current feelings about things to what we were doing in the past. And how that can be done hypocritically and to political advantage.
Pelosi probably was told, but simply didn’t understand what she was hearing. She’s not a leader or a good judge of right and wrong. She’s a real estate agent in way over her head.
There are probably elements of the left that wouldn’t care if Pelosi got thrown under the bus on this one (or “hypo-vehiculated”), as long as they can get some Bushies, too. What’s the big deal if they lose her as speaker? They can probably only do better.

Gingrich lied to the closest person in his life and cheated on her. the only “evidence” (as if this were a trial) against Pelosi is a vague CIA memo that said she attended a meeting. because of the nature of the CIA there are, as always, no details as to how much she knew. i don’t honestly know if she is lying or not but neither does anyone else posting.

3. Pelosi changed her story so many times, she’s in too deep. She should have said “yes, there was waterboarding and it resulted in preventing a terrorist attack on Los Angeles. After more consideration, I would advise against this enhanced interrogation technique in the future.”

Bush and Republicans managed to convince the House, Senate and the People of United States of America that there were “Weapons of Mass Destruction” and we need to go to war… a war that would only last 6 weeks?? When Obama said no more waterboarding, then that should have been the end of it. This is awesome – the Obama Administration was laying the groundwork for its defense in response to what will be a total failure to defend this nation. How? By starting the narrative that “sure Bush kept us from attack since 9/11, but he had to torture people to do it, so he is a bad President”. But Nancy screwed it all up by not disclosing that she knew that these EITs were being used all along. Watch how fast the Administration is backpedalling on Gitmo and the interrogation photos. I love and respect men/women who have served in the military for this country.

Why are liberals accusing the CIA of lying. In order to be lying the CIA needs to be cla!rvoyant and able to know ahead of time how politics would play out, by name of politician. And these are the same people who so quickly believed the forged Dan Rather documents were real, yet won’t accept the plain language truth of de-classified official government records that no one disputes are real.

Point #1: If your defense of Pelosi includes the deflection that “Newt is a liar too”, then you in fact have no real defense. Point #2: After as many times as Princess Pelosi has changed her story in the matter, you must be ignorant or blind to believe her defense that the CIA was the one who in fact lied. It’s all fine and good to say the CIA lied but the problem that Pelosi has is that she is contradicting many DEMOCRATs — not just CIA people. There were other non-CIA people in these conversations and she isn’t being backed by any of them. Her own aid has admitted to knowing, so she is left with saying he didn’t tell her about WAR CRIMES.
The simple fact of the matter is that most Americans, including Ms. Pelosi, were very concerned in 2002 and 2003 about the possibility of a 2nd 9/11 attack, and at the time were willing to do whatever to prevent it. Eight years later, we have lost that feeling.
What I hate about Pelosi is that now she wants to act like that never was the case; that somehow she was above it back then. What a two-faced jerk.
What I love is that the woman Pelosi hates the most in the Democrat party (if you know California politics), Jane Harmon, actually had the guts to do what Pelosi didn’t have the guts to do, and that is to object. Yeah, that Valerie Plame and the rest of the CIA agents that decided to send Joe Wilson to Niger are OBVIOUSLY right wing. How many other leaks that damaged Bush came out from the CIA during Bush’s time in office? Go back and look at the archives. The CIA is out for itself, but I don’t see why they would lie only to Pelosi but nobody else. At a minimum, Pelosi herself admitted that someone from her office found about the waterboarding in early 2003, but Pelosi still didn’t do anything, did she?
Pelosi created this situation herself, which is why not many Dems are putting their necks on the line to defend her. The GOP had absolutely nothing to do with it. But many of you are reflectively defending Pelosi simply because she’s a Dem. All of you doing this can put your credibility and intellectual honesty down the same crapper where Pelosi has put hers with this situation.
Instead of blaming this on the GOP, start thinking about whom you would like to replace her as Speaker because that’s how this is going to end.

After the Bush white house went to great lengths having lawyers write briefs to justify the legal use of these enhanced interrogation techniques, why would the CIA then feel compelled to hide the fact that they were going to use them when briefing the Congressional comittee?
On the other hand, Pelosi might have raised no objection to the use of these techniques at the time she was informed, but she has to deny that that she knew now, as Obama is considering an investigation and possible prosecution of Bush white house officials. They can’t appear to be divided on this issue.
Newt’s comments may be a be a bit over the top, but I see no reason for the CIA to have lied then, and plenty of reason for Pelosi to lie now.

On a side note, the left continues to take this issue back to being lied to by the President about the war, and the weapons of mass destruction. Many other countries i.e. England, Italy, Australia, Israel, made their decisions to take their countries to war based on the same information. To believe that this was Bush’s war based on lies one would have to beleive that all these other leaders (In the case of Blair a liberal with no love for Bush in 2001)
took thier countries to war because we told them to. That is a stretch by even the loony tune ists on the left.
We cannot forget as well that while our soldiers were burnt and hung from a bridge in Fulluja this country was arguing every day about how we should be handling the prayer books at Gitmo and whether the prayer mats were placed facing east. Obama is now finding out that its alot easier to say things on a campaign trail then it is to actually lead when your decisions mean people may die. So let me understand this… We’re all upset because either Pelosi did not do her job asking about torture or knew about torture and didn’t do her job in speaking out against it. So we have to investigate. Sure.

There seems to be a fundamental misunderstanding in some circles about why this issue is an important one. The simple fact is that either:
1. Pelosi was briefed on enhanced interrogation techniques and is now lying about it.
2. Pelosi’s aide was briefed on enhanced interrogation techniques and didn’t pass the information up the chain.
The former is the story being told by CIA, the latter by Pelosi. What she and her defenders don’t understand is that the distinction is irrelevant. In either case, the CIA briefed what they were doing/planned to do, and were given the go-ahead. Depending on who you believe, either Pelosi or her aide (acting on her behalf) made the political calculation that EITs were a politically popular response to terrorists and decided that it was a bad idea to oppose the use of these techniques. Now, having signed off on their use, they want to backtrack and claim that they didn’t know.
But Pelosi & Co. want to have it both ways. You can’t authorize EITs one day and the next day redefine EITs as torture and try to prosecute the people who authorized them, and not expect some of the ****storm you just created to land on your own doorstep.

Even Pelosi’s #2 man, Harry Reid wants an explanation from her and Obama’s appointee Leon Panetta is defending the CIA as well. This is not D’s v. R’s folks, this is national security v. one individual’s political career. She is pissed because she cannot have it both ways. She wants to roast the Bush Admin over waterboarding but that would require roasting herself, since the memos prove she knew about it. If she had been honest about it to begin with, I would have given her a pass. It’s okay to say look, we were in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 and I thought we needed to take desperate measures in such desperate times and I was wrong. But instead, lying about her knowledge of the practice while still trying to throw everyone else under the bus is a clear sign that she needs to go.

This is clearly Bush’s fault.

To help our liberal friends, I am trying to find another explanation for Speaker Pelosi’s conflicting statements and bizarre behavior when the press was questioning her. Maybe Nancy herself was waterboarded by the CIA under Bush and Cheney’s orders – not to extract information, but just to inflict physical pain and damage (never mind that waterboarding does neither, just go with it). She was so traumatized by the experience, it induced amnesia about what she was briefed on (or told about a briefing to someone else who heard about a different briefing). So now whenever she has to pee, she has flashbacks to the torture she suffered, which explains the vacant stare and the dancing around. Oh, and the CIA will certainly deny this, so it has to be true.

I am no big Pelosi advocate and have no idea what they told her or didn’t tell her – neither does Newt. What I do know is that Newt probably finds adjectives like “despicable”, “Trivial” “Dishonest” and “Vicious” in his ready vocabulary because he is all those things and worse.
If Pelosi did know about the waterboarding she is culpable to. Torture isn’t about party politics. It is about illegal behavior and while she would not be as guilty as the architects of this outlaw behavior if she knew about it and did nothing it was morally wrong.
I am growing increasingly concerned that the CIA has been breaking laws everywhere and America better get some gumption. We were not designed to be run by a secretive organization like the CIA. “Keeping us safe” isn’t good enough. I am sure the KGB kept a lot of people safe too. We’d better find out what has been going on.

If they lied, and she knew they lied, she should have taken action much sooner! What kind of representative make a peep about being lied to for more than 6 years! Why would the do that? The CIA had legal authorization to use these EITs, why would they hide that information from anyone in Congress who was responsible for their funding? This is the CIA, also know as the CYA. These days they do nothing unless they have clearly documented authorization to do so.
Face it… Pelosi got overzealous in her attacks on the Republican and wound up being hoisted by her own petard.

A comment about torture…
After 9/11 we caught some bad guys and very much wanted to get information from them. Before proceeding the CIA (remember, really the CYA) asked for guidance on what techniques were allowable. Certainly everyone, even on this board, agrees that the CIA has to do more than just politely ask for information. Also, I believe that everyone here also agrees that no one wanted authorization to perform *real* torture (think Sadam Hussein here… putting out eyes, sticking people in wood chippers, cutting out tongues… you get the picture… real torture).
So what is allow and what isn’t? Since the CIA wouldn’t proceed without clear legal guidance, a group of Dems and Repubs came up with a list and it appears that waterboarding was put on the list. Seems reasonable to me. It is primarily a psychological torture, doing no real physical harm to a person. Maybe it is torture, maybe it isn’t but it made the list of approved EITs in ‘limited’ circumstances… so the CIA used it.
If people now want to say it is torture and no longer allow it that’s fine with me but it is just plan silly to claim the CIA is a bunch of ruthless torturers that hid from Congress the fact that they were engaging in torture.
People who say things like this are partisan hacks… like Pelosi.

I heard about water boarding back when Bush had a positive opinion rating in the upper 80 percentile. It was commonly spoke of on TV, and many “experts” suggested it was being used. Back then we were concerned about finding the people responsible for 9/11, and any impending attack. Our hearts were going out to americans who had to choose fire, or a once in a lifetime sky dive. I think most understood waterboarding was being applied to some jehadist savage somewhere. I think every congressperson that needed to know, did in fact know. Back then however, weasel politicos had to ACT like they were for American Security First, and Image second. Now, years later, after opinion makers completely demoralized us, they saw an opportunity to go for the jugular. Now suddenly everyone is in an outrage? But then Cheney says, “fine…want to expose our strategy?…release ALL the memos”. Lets not have selective transparency, that serves only to empower your party.

How would Newt know exactly what happened and when; he wasn’t there now was he? It is very possible that the Bush Administration did not fill in the Speaker of the House (which happens to be a Dem)’ my goodness we all know that administration did some pretty horrible things and this doesn’t seem to go against that norm.
The former VP Cheney and Newt should just keep right along talking if they please, but hopefully the reporters will actually question them as to how they know exactly what’s going on seeing that Newt wasn’t there at the time and Cheney is out of office now and makes these accusations about the current administration.

The more Newt talks, the more other people sound ignorant. He is absolutely right on this, and he nailed what this debate should be about. It’s not about whether or not waterboarding is torture, it is about what authority the president should have in extraordinary circumstances. If the president of the United States says he doesn’t want the responsibility to make these tough calls, let him say so.

I’m always amused by the liberals or conservatives that post here always speak in absolute terms about the other side. gingrich is absolutely wrong that the geneva convention doesn’t apply to terrorists, and the interviewer should have known enough about the geneva convention to call him on that point. there are fundamental guarantees in the geneva convention that apply to all prisoners, whether or not they have a uniform and whether or not they are combatants. at the very minimum, these fundamental guarantees apply to terrorists and those accused of being terrorists:
so what would gingrich want to have this national debate about? whether america should renege on the geneva convention?

His 1994 contract fixed a lot that was wrong with this country at that time. As I recall, 9 of 10 of the contract items were passed, including welfare reform which was signed by President Clinton. Term limits was the only item not passed, and the incompetent congress (both parties) will never pass that. Nancy Pelosi has now been contradicted by two CIA chiefs, her own former staff member, and members of her own party. Her defense is that it was “not her job” to disagree with the briefings, because she had an election to win in the House. Excuse me…. but her job is to represent her constituents, and members of the US House of Representatives as Speaker; and finally the people of the US as a member of the House Intellegence Committee. She has been exposed as purely a political hack and should be replaced as leader of the House of Representatives.

A huge difference between Pelosi (who insinuates that Cheney and Bush are “war criminals”) and Vice President Cheney and President Bush is her belief that waterboarding is torture. Cheney and Bush say it is not torture. They ALL signed of on the use or the potential use of waterboarding during interrogations to enhance our Country’s ability to gather intelligence. One of the three signed off on something she believes is torture, two signed off saying it is not torture. The one that believes it so much that she is using her global megaphone to publicly denounce the former Presidential administration is the only one that could be accused of “war crimes”. Because, according to her, it is “torture”, thus a crime against humanity.
Cheney can cover himself rather easily. He can simply voluteer to be waterboarded and hope he doesn’t have a heart attack.
Pelosi? No room to run. She is pretty much cornered by her own accusations. Her accusations and claims that waterboarding are torture are nullified the second she asks for it. If she believes it is torture, she signed off on using torture. No wonder she was stammering so badly yesterday.

Congrats to Bush, Cheney, Hastert and Pelosi for doing what was right at the time and keeping the country safe after 911. Certainly, there is nothing wrong with reviewing our interrogation and detention policies and modify them if we deem necessary, but I fear that recently, we have gone too far to the left, too soft on the bad guys just to pay off the far left. It’s too bad Democrats politicized critical national security issues like this, especially considering they didn’t have to! They were going to win the 2006 and 2008 elections anyway. The Republicans, under a rather liberal George Bush had lost their conservative roots and abandoned their base after the 2004 election victories that saw Bush re-elected and the GOP growing their majorities in both houses of Congress. With their increased majorities, Republicans failed to reign in spending (nothing of course like the last three congressional Democrat budgets). Republicans failed to secure the border with Mexico. Republicans failed to make the Bush tax cuts permanent. Republicans failed to put forth a comprehensive energy plan, including more domestic drilling, that would drive us toward energy independence. Republicans failed to implement any new approaches to curb the entitlements that will soon bankrupt our country. Republicans handled Katrina poorly (granted Democrats Blanco and Nagin handled it worse). Some Republicans were caught behaving boorishly, ie Mark Foley, etc. See folks, the Republicans abandonded the very priciples that got them elected. Subsequently, they lost their base and their credibility on the issues. The Democrats NEVER had to throw national security under the bus to win these elections! Now that they have done so, it is coming back to bite them because now that they are in power, Americans expect them to lead like adults. Again, I have no problem with Obama and congress reviewing our policies and making changes if deemed truly necessary and in the best interst of our country. Unfortunately, because they politicized these issues, the resulting policy changes have been designed to pay off the far, far left wing of the party. In summary, make national security policy changes for the right reasons, not political payback reasons. As well, leave Pelosi, Bush and Cheney alone. They did the right thing back then (even though Pelosi denies it) and deserve our congrats.

Nancy Pelosi is typical of the reason the Congress has the lowest approval rating in the history of the country.
We must all remember that in 2006 the Democratic Congress was the majority.
During those two years, President Bush was a “lame duck” president. Yet, nothing changed, except the economy started to go south. The Congress didn’t do anything positive in 2006, 2007 or 2008 and in 2009 we have the same exact Congress. In California, which is Sister Nancy’s home, we are quite used to her ineptitude. If I were her “boss”, I would ask for her resignation for (at the very least), not doing her job.

It is the same as those who believe that we haven’t found any weapons of mass destruction in Iraq – they believe that because they weren’t there, and it wasn’t publicized when it happened. That would amount to the major media actually assisting a conservative administration, and we can’t have that!! The people who found those artillery shells with the traces of sarin gas in them and the ones who destroyed those same artillery shells and most of the soldiers who have served in Iraq know exactly what has been found over there.
Unfortunately, most people don’t understand that the phrase “weapons of mass destruction” applies to more than nuclear bombs, and biological and chemical weapons can be far nastier for the survivors.
The country may not survive, but portions of it will – and the portions that hold close to the rights in the Constitution will also be the areas most of the military personnel will gravitate to. After all, their oath is to the Constitution, not the country and certainly not the government!
I find it most amusing that so many people I know who supported the current administration prior to the election are now regretting that decision. When I hear them complain about the things that are going on, I just smile sweetly and say, “And who did you vote for?”

Pelosi should step down. She cried for prosecution when she knew what was going on the whole time! Could it be that Democrats were as concerned with preventing future terrorist attacks as the Republicans and the CIA were???

The republicans are not responsible this mess. The entire responsibility rests on President Obama’s shoulders. Some are saying that this was an intentional act on his part to eliminate Pelosi, and the pundits need to wake up to it and investigate what was really behind President Obama’s release of these memos.
It is really kind of amazing at what Obama has done here. He releases top secret CIA memos which absolutely cripple and eviscerate the CIA, and he stirs up this huge firestorm over an extremely important and explosive issue. He tells us he’s doing it out of a sense of morality.
He then tells us that there will be no fact-finding, truth-telling, or other investigation into this because we should not focus on the past.
So Pelosi is badly damaged and hanging on for dear life. The Democrats are frustrated, confused over Obama’s actions, and angry that there will be no investigations, prosecutions, public hangings, or whatever. The Republicans of course have been hit with a sledgehammer and publicly branded as war criminals.
So with everybody unhappy and angry with each other, and the issue
itself totally unresolved, Obama looks around and says “My work here

As Senator Blunt said, the CIA doesn’t provide Congressional leaders with briefings on techniques that they are not using and not planning to use. Under the circumstances, Pelosi’s statements would not be credible even if they were internally consistent.
I’m just pleased that there is at least one Democrat in the House, namely Steny Hoyer, with the integrity to concede that public lies by the Speaker of the House about a serious matter of national security are a matter that should be investigated, even if said Speaker is a member of one’s own political party.

Obama’s naivete of loving terrorists away from their holy war is not a viable foreign policy. It will simply result in another attack. You do realize that it is not a matter of if but a matter of when, don’t you? If not, you seriously underestimate our enemies.

Nor can you talk to a tyrant. And you sure can’t simply ask a terrorist to pretty please divulge everything they know about their particular cell and contacts’ plans to commit a REAL war crime against Citizens of the United States.
