GOP Filibuster over Sotomayor? Cornyn Won’t Rule It Out
Sen. John Cornyn, R-Tex., of the Senate Judiciary Committee isn’t ruling out a Republican filibuster on Capitol Hill over Judge Sonia Sotomayor.
“Is filibuster on the table today?” I asked Cornyn during an exclusive interview with him and Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., on “This Week” Sunday.
“I think it’s really premature to say that or to speculate,” Cornyn said.
“I’m not willing to judge one way or the other, George, because frankly we need to not pre-confirm, and to give Judge Sotomayor the fair hearing that Miguel Estrada and indeed Clarence Thomas were denied by our friends on the other side of the aisle,” Cornyn said.
But Schumer argued Sotomayor is “filibuster-proof.”
“When my Republican colleagues — and I think they have approached this in an open-minded way — when they see her record of excellence, she’s legally excellent, of moderation, she is not a far left-wing judge. Business Week said her record on business was moderate, the Wall Street Journal called her mainstream, and then her compelling history — I think she’s virtually filibuster proof when people learn her record and her story,” Schumer said.

I think all this hoopla over a single comment and couple of dicisions is being taken too far. Look at the person’s overall record before passing judgement, people.

If Bush One gave her an appointment to begin with, I don’t understand all the hoopla with the Republicans now. It’s pretty pathetic when your Party platform is “Just Say No.” I guess when you’ve lost every shred of credibility, “NO” is all you have left.

Look, Sotomayor has ruled against white men in Conn. and that is a fact. She obviously is partial and that is a horrible thing for any judge-let alone a Supreme Court Judge. Is America to come down to no justice only partiality? If so, then there is no more America and maybe that is what the Progressives really want and will surely get if we allow political correctness to permeate all of our society and not blind justice-May the Saints save us from stupidity!

Naturally those on the right are being hypocrites and will never admit before the public that many of conservative judges on the current court have said similar things.
I am also SICK of the vast majority of the MEDIA trying to tell this story, but half quoting her statement in the 1st place.

Please, please, please, I hope the Republicans DO filibuster. It will make for great entertainment, it will NOT stop the appointment, and it will further erode the down-and-out Party of No in the eyes and hearts of the American people……

This segment makes me think there is some hope for television news. BOTH sides of the issue of an appointment to the Supreme Court is being presented. Doesn’t happen often in today’s media. As a minority female that holds the constitution central in government, a person being appointed for the highest court must be closely evaluated. This country is center or right of center in belief. We have seen the brutality of previous minority candidates, putting party line aside. This candidate warrants close examination as decisions on the high court SHOULD NOT BE BIASED OR TAKING A POSITION OF POLICY MAKING. I am sure there are many candidates in our country that have not made “Gaffs” in public presentations that have the purpose of providing the mission of our courts. The Judiciary Committee and Congress MUST closely examine any appointment to the Supreme Court. It would be nice if both parties and our White House would put politics aside. We have had enough already. We’re broke, in debt, threatened by terriorists and nuclear arms; enough of the games politicians play. Rush decisions and politics have gotten us into this mess.

rockychance – ” Look, Sotomayor has ruled against white men in Conn. and that is a fact. She obviously is partial and that is a horrible thing for any judge-let alone a Supreme Court Judge” Yes she and TWO OTHER JUDGES WHO HAPPEN TO BE WHITE made the unanimous ruling! It was a 3 judge panel. From you statement if you rule against white men, your partial, what about all the white judges who rule against people of color, would you say the same about them? What about the 2 white judges who agreed? Are they racist also? Maybe they actually followed the rule of law and all came to the same conclusion.

OBAMA ADMINISTRATION ..WE ARE BECOMING a socialized country…no one will fight against this guy in congress…best scenario his date night cost a lot of money for feds and nyc ..nyc had 600 cops out….and this is the same guy telling the country we are in this together we must watch our spending with a 13 trillion dollar budget

Judge sotomayor did not “rule against white people”. She was one of a panel of three judges who upheld the district court ruling to overturn the tests until hearings were held. That decision was unanimous, guaranteeing that the dispute would be heard by the Supreme Court. This whole thing isd totally overblown, and the media, with their need to fill a 24 hour news cycle have made it into a circus. It is just plain stupid. She’ll get to Congress, they’ll get thier moment in the sun grilling her, and she will likely be confirmed. The media will move on to the next manufactured big thing. In the meantime, a lot of people will have made total fools of themselves, accomplishing nothing positive for anybody.

Can the GOP really afford to write off the Hispanic vote? If ever there was a political party determined to shoot itself in the foot, the current Republican Party would seem to be it. Who needs reason and logic when you have Rush and aye of Newt?

For a three judge panel to rule against a test that was specifically written to rule out racial bias tells me they had an agenda that had nothing to do with the law or justice. Apparently, the thing to do now is to vilify the white people in the country, not allowing them to excel. Had the people who DIDN’T pass the test actually studied, they might have passed also. Sorry, skin color had nothing to do with their failure. It was their lack of study skills.

The Senate rule that was in place when the Dems filibustered Bush appointees/nominees is still in place today. As far as that rule is concerned, nothing has changed.

Why did it take eight years for somebody to say that she misspoke? And why didn’t SHE say now that she misspoke eight years ago? had it not been brought up, nobody would have been trying to cover up the fact that SHE SAID IT. Is THIS the kinda justice we want on SCOTUS??? Had Trent Lott said it — did HE merely misspeak? — Libs woulda been doin’ the same thing.

The GOP filabuster a judge? Wasn’t three years ago that Frist and his neofacists cronies wanted to try to change the Senante rules to allow a straight up and down vote. Bill Oreilly and Hannity practically doing a Glen Beck tears for fears asking why not a straight up and down vote.
Unfortunately, the GOP and trying to be idealogically pure to please their spokesman Rush and their grand aytaollah Rev. Dobson, have lost teh votes needed to filabuster.

Justice Cardozo . The son of Albert Cardozo and Rebecca Washington, Benjamin Cardozo was born into a community of persecuted Spanish and Portuguese Jews.
Cardozo was the first Hispanic-Latino Jurist on the United States Supreme Court. if the current nominee is confirmed she will be 73 years late to be the first.
So why is the Hispanic-Latino-Latina-South American-Spanish-Portugese- et cetera community not proud of Cardozo? Is it because of his religion?

Both Cardozo’s maternal grandparents, Sara Seixas and Isaac Mendes Seixas Nathan, and his paternal grandparents, Ellen Hart and Michael H. Cardozo, were Sephardi Jews

It seems to me that the topic of Ms. Sotomayor’s paragraph (containing the sentence now under consideration) was *wisdom*-in general.
So I will ask the question…HOW do we ACQUIRE *wisdom*…as opposed to simply “knowledge” or information?
How do we develop character? Is it through work? Struggle? Is it by overcoming insurmountable adversity by remaining consistent with principles of honesty and integrity?
I would also ask if she said “all white males”…. or white males “who haven’t lived that life”?
Did she immediately preface her statement with “there can never be a universal definition of wise”?
Is she saying… that a person- who has historically been given THE LEAST amount of “privilege” -has a certain *kind of wisdom* (that can only be gained through struggle and championing adversity)… and further…that rather than being a deficit…might actually be beneficial in aiding them to make better decisions… than someone who has only known privilege?
I did not read her statement to mean that she was talking about real life individual “white males”, or was trying to infer that one race or gender is better than another. It seems to me that the term “white males” referred to the historical legacy of privilege, especially since she was careful to qualify it as such.
It sounded to me that she, as a woman who started at the bottom, is simply claiming HER personal and hard fought WISDOM. I have found that women do that sometimes. They have learned to be their own cheerleaders over the last 40 years… in a work environment that has been less than inviting (especially at the top).
She also seems to be saying that despite originally claims that men and woman are the same, that women offer a different perspective and dynamic to the decision making process…that the wisdom of a little old man and a little old woman might offer different types of advice based on their life’s experiences.
Shocking!

Judge Sotomayor
Hmmmm! Wow 17 years a judge still making it? You say she is of the Spanish Race? And she is a Top Gun Judge? This poor women! First of all and I think all the ladies will agree with me. (SHE IS A WOMAN TRYING TO DO A FANTISTIC JOB). Look, no matter what this woman say. Someone who thinks they are smarter than this woman (a judge) will try to rip her apart. Let’s be real! I know and all those (haters) fine paper pickers know, this women been on the bench rendering decisions for our country for (don’t tell anyone) 17 years. We are still functioning. Give me a break! No Judge is an angel with a halo on. I don’t expect any of our lawmakers to be one either. Remember, it is still said the best liar’s in business are Lawyers and Politicians. So, no matter what they say information will be twisted and contorted to suit or benefit someone else’s needs. The very best to Judge Sotomayor heading to the U S Supreme Court.

Judge Sotomayor: “I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life,” If a white man had made a similar statement ” I would hope that a wise white man with the richness of his experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a Latina woman who hasn’t lived that life.” EVERYONE would be calling him a racist and no one would be making excuses for the statement or claiming they were taken out of context. As Thomas Sowell said “Racism doesn’t have a very good track record. You would think you would want to put an end to it rather than put it under new management.”

I am totally surprised you guys and especially the lady judge who put words in sotomayors mouth ….just do not get it ..she was not comparing old women and old mens wisdom..
ie if an astronaut spoke on a problem in going to the moon , no wise old man nor wise old woman could ever get what the astronaut was talking about , with out the experience the Argonaut HAD EXPERIENCED..
I give her thumbs up for her Lodgic and thumbs down for all who JUST DO NOT GET IT
HERE IN CANADA WE HEAR/RECEIVE SO MANY RACIST COMMENTS FROM US CITIZENS , ALL i CAN SAY IS GOD HELP YOU AS A NATION

I agree, but cynics fail to see the end game in this.
Regardless of ranting, raving accompanied with chicken little levels of drama surrounding her, SHE WILL BE CONFIRMED. PERIOD
The Republicans and all parrots repeating Repub talking points might want to save what little No’s they have left for the next 2 SCOTUS nominations he’ll have over the next 7 years.

One comment? One vote? You must be on drugs. She has had over 60% of her judgements overturned by the Supreme Court. That constitutes a person who has failed as a judge. The only Appeals Court with a worse record is the one in San Francisco. The woman judges on sympathy, empathy and emotion instead of facts and law. She is no more qualified to sit on the Appeals court or Supreme Court than Obama is qualified and eligible to hold the POTUS.

republicans are waking up and will fight her confirmation. the gop is not going to lose or gain votes on this pick and might as well do the right theing for this country and keep this biased person off the supreme ct. miguel estrada did not help or hurt the dems.its time to hold all people to the same standards. if she were a white male she would be done. enough, i never thought that spanish heritage made you a minority anyway. isnt spain part of europe?

On the show this week was also Katy Kay, announcing the release of her book Womenomics. In her interview with George, she basically said the SAME exact thing as Judge Sotomayor (in the exact paragraph in question)….which is to say that in the “old days”…when women were first entering the work force, in order to be “allowed” to “play” they HAD to say that WOMEN would BEHAVE THE SAME as men in all situations. Sotomayor challenged the claim that a wise old men and wise old women would always reach the same conclusion.
Both in the speech by Sotormayor, and in the book by Katy, these women are refuting that original position and are saying that women should be VALUED for what they are able to bring to the table, and are acknowledging that it is a DIFFERENT SKILL SET(women have been found to use more words in a day, approach problem solving differently, etc.). Further, they are highlighting the positives of this truth.
The fact that so many “white males” (Rush Limbaugh for example) seem to be completely unable to comprehend her message PROVES the point that men do not always understand what women are saying. It further points to the essentiality of having women (and people whose motives have historically been misunderstood) ON THE COURT as jurists.
No one had to “explain” to ME (or millions of women or Latinos) what Sonia MEANT in her speech. The fact that Rush Limbaugh concluded that her words prove she is a “racist” shows just how far “off base” a person (a white male in particularly) can be.
This should not be news…as any wife across America (regardless of race) could have told you this was true.
Men admit they don’t know what women want ALL THE TIME. So WHY is everyone “freaking out” when a woman says it?
