Michelle Obama: The 120-percenter
ABC News’ Yunji de Nies reports: First Lady Michelle Obama says she knows the challenges of being a working mother, and the feeling that one is never doing enough. "I call myself a 120-percenter. If I’m not doing any job at 120 percent, I think I’m failing. So if you’re trying to do that at home and at work, you find it very difficult and stressful and frustrating," she told the annual meeting of the Corporate Voices for Working Families at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington. Mrs. Obama gave a short speech to the crowd of roughly 85 members, whose organization focuses on working families and business competitiveness. She spoke about her middle-class upbringing, and the luxury of having a mother who stayed home. "But things are very different today. One income really doesn’t always cut it anymore," Mrs. Obama said. "Twenty-two million working women don’t have a single paid sick day. That means they lose money any time they have to stay home to take care of their kids. You know, imagine making that choice. And we do it all the time. And even when I had sick leave, I found myself, you know, hoping that the kids would stay well, just I couldn’t afford to take the day off because there was a meeting, or something was going on." The first lady acknowledged that in her current role, she has more resources than most, joking that, "Everyone should have a Chief of Staff and a set of personal assistants." On a more serious note, she said that working parents should have more access to flexible work hours, paid leave and child care. She ended her remarks to quote, "Stop and do what I love to do best, which is listen and learn." Mrs. Obama then sat down with a pen and paper, and proceeded to take notes as the CVWF members began their presentation. For those on FLOTUS fashion watch: Mrs. Obama wore a short-sleeved, floral blouse, with a lavender camisole, black pants and a gold studded brown belt.

Obama Avoids Questions on Contraception Rule
This reminds me of when my son was in high school. He had a beginning grade of 120% by getting all the extra credit questions correct on the first test.
There were no extra credit questions on the second test but after scoring another 100%, his math teacher lowered his cummulative grade to 110%, she averaged the two scores. I kid you not. She could not be talked out of it. Ah… Public school teachers.
But in reality, not math class, one cannot give more than 100%, it is just hyperbole, it serves no purpose except to aggrandize oneself. From the Obama White House? Hyperbole? Nevah!

I would love it if someone found some time to address ways to make it less of a “luxury” for one parent to stay home.
I also hope my children stay well, but because I want them to be well.

As it is impossible to do anything at 120%, someone should inform her that she is indeed failing. So give up, and put on some comfy sweats and a snuggie and relax in front of the tv, Michelle.

Not sure how she has any clue at all, her husband became a senator and she immediately received a $300k at the hospital she worked at and he was able secure millions in earmarks for that hospital. She has no clue what it is like in todays world.

I’m tired of all of this overly critical, pedantic finger waving – you’re all hypocrits and haters and you’re destroying our society.

Thank you, Michelle, for encouraging young people to lead healthy lives and keep up the good work.

I used to comment negatively about Bush. But his supporters didn’t call me “bitter” or “hateful.” Were Obama supporters “bitter” and “hateful” if they commented negatively about or poked fun at the Bushes?
Now why is is that anytime people comment negatively about the Obamas, they get called things like “bitter” and “hateful” by his supporters?
Talk about hypocrisy!

no, i pretty much think its happening on both sides. no one is willing to listen to anyone with an open mind anymore, and we trash anyone who so much as says one word wrong in public – their mistake is played every ten seconds on tv and they are ridiculed. give it up and look at yourself, that’s what i’m saying. if you think you never make any mistake, say something that is miscontrued, or bought a piece of clothing that cost too much given your income, feel free to mock. Otherwise, get over yourself! Be civilized!

Even Elizabeth Hassellback has warmed to Michelle Obama. I just pray for all the mean spirited people to “change”. Be grateful we live in America. Everything doesn’t go the way I want. However, I really like the Obama’s more and more. May God continue to bless America and Americans (hater’s included).

Er, Mark J., it is normal for Presidents and their wives to “live off” the government. That’s what they all do. The President works in return for his salary and perks. The First Lady doesn’t receive a salary at all, yet she is still expected to be visible, espouse causes, make many public appearances and give speeches, host White House events, direct a staff — you name it.
As for what Mrs. Obama did before she became First Lady, I’d say that qualifying and working as a lawyer and as a Vice-President at the Hospitals of the University of Chicago represented doing “something.” The President himself has said that there were times when she carried the family financially, when she made more money than he did. Until his two books took off, which happened only after his election to the U.S. Senate, the Obamas were not a rich couple.
For some reason, people ARE very bitter about the Obamas. I suspect it’s partly a matter of cognitive dissonance involving the sudden presence of a highly-educated and affluent Black couple in the White House. It seems rather difficult for many members of the public to cope.

Oh, please.
I voted for Obama and put in a lot of volunteer hours on his campaign. And I admire Michelle for various reasons.
But to hold up Michelle as an example of a “working” mother is absurd. First, she doesn’t get a paycheck — her post is dependent entirely on her husband’s job. And I know very few working mothers who have a staff to handle all the household work and a live-in Nanny.
You want a better example? Find an average middle-class woman with two children, a husband who only occasionally “helps” and a job that requires 50+ hours a week. Otherwise, don’t waste your readers’ time.

In truth, Michelle was never a good example of a working mother, since she had full time household help, and her mother available nearby to help with the girls. And her high powered job was nothing but a patronage job given her because her senator husband brought the pork home to UChicago Hospital. It is the wild inflation of her “accomplishments” that drives non kool aid drinkers crazy. If you see something in her to admire, well that is your right, but stop trying to portray her as a super woman.

Yes as a wife and mother we all feel not always at first base, but we go on. The one thing Michelle might do to feel really really Great is ask her sweet husband to pull out the proof we need from him. He has been allowed to hide it long enough, and he many not be our President after all! So Miss Michelle can go back to her old simple life. And feel just Great!

If you don’t like the current administration you better find a better way to attract voters to your way of thinking. Snarky comments didn’t cut it in the 2008 elections and they aren’t helping you now. Continue wandering.

Michelle O. has her mother helping her with her two kids. Not many of us get that kind of help! Plus two kids aren’t much so she basically has her days free for whatever you do as O’s wife!

I’m convinced there will ALWAYS be people who post comments on any article that know NOTHING about the issue. Even though Michelle is a fine example of a first lady, there are people who are going to go out of their way to snark at everything she does. These of course are the SAME people who couldn’t do a quarter of the things she can accomplish on her own! The detractors wouldn’t have a clue where to begin. They’d be overwhelmed. I want to know WHY we other readers and those who HAVE been working single parents have to put up with the comments of a few ignorant idiots! The percentage quotient is just how people view the value of their input. It’s inflated. Think of bankers. They inflate the value of nothing all the time! You could achieve a lot using 80% energy and 20% intellect.

========
Because I don’t agree with the solutions she and her husband have championed.
I don’t agree with universal pre-K, or longer school years, or the expense of running government programs that assist some families while costing others lots of money- like the government paying for more childcare.
I would love to hear her advocate for a way to reduce costs (taxes) so one parent can stay home with the children. I promise not to criticize her if she does.

CS, where did you get the idea that Michelle Obama had “full-time household help” before she became First Lady? Please support that statement. As for her mother’s help — don’t many people receive help from relatives? Including childcare?
A patronage job at U of C hospitals. Well, possibly. U of C was my own husband’s employer at the time, and we did wonder about the jump in salary, though Mrs. Obama already worked for U of C; she wasn’t hired merely after her husband was elected to the Senate, and “patronage” usually refers to government jobs. U of C is a private institution.
But let’s ask why people are so upset that these two people, who came from modest circumstances, have done so well in life? That they worked hard, got into good schools, graduated with fine GPA’s, and found good jobs. That’s what we’re all supposed to do, isn’t it? It’s certainly what my white but non-rich parents told me to do, so I could get into good schools and establish a successful career. The Obamas did that. Why are they are being excoriated for it, when they ddin’t come from inherited wealth or any expectation of privilege?
Fewer than 5 years ago, the Obamas lived in a condo apartment about two blocks from my own. They both worked, they didn’t own a large home, his first book hadn’t yet attracted a great deal of attention. Since then, the couple has become very successful, again by dint of hard work and determination. We’re all supposed to admire that, in this country. Why are the Obamas somehow exempt from that traditional admiration, from that hallowed American success story? I keep asking that question, and no one, so far, has been willign to answer it. The only conclusion I can come to is that the answer is founded in envy and resentment of people who weren’t born to much but who made the most of the little they had, unlike many other people, who are now gnashing their teeth and wondering what brains and abilities the Obamas had that they did not.

===========
Fewer than 5 years ago, when the Obamas lived in that condo, they were making the kind of money they now call “wealthy”. They have made that kind of money for every year they have released their tax returns (the first is 2000). They talk of struggling at the levels of income they now want to make responsible for paying for their enormous spending bill.
Of course they got where they are through hard work. That’s how most people achieve. Do *they* realize that?
My problem with them is the policies they want to enact.

Michele Obama is the FIRST LADY of the United States of America and that is an enormous job that would be recognized by the haters if she were Cindy McCain or sarah palin but the fact that she is not enrages the critics and throws them into childlike temper tantrums every time her name is mentioned. That fact is so hilarious to me plus the knowledge that they will have to whine in frustration for the next eight years.

As well as we need to remember she was still working part-time during the campaign as well as taking care of two with the help of her own mother. So, she’s a perfect example of the working mom.

I am a single (widowed) father of 4 children. It isn’t easy and it is not always perfect, but you find a way to deal with the issues of raising kids this way. I do not want any special treatment because of my unique situation. Life is not fair and it does not always end up equal, but the best lesson that I am teaching my children is self-reliance which is so much more enriching to their lives than any type of monetary compensation i would miss out on. I do not know if having a chief of staff and so forth would send the appropriate message of the value of doing things for yourself and taking care of yourself, to my children.
