Obama ‘TRONs’ It Up
ABC News’ Yunji de Nies reports: Calling cyber threats one of the country’s "most serious economic and national security challenges," President Obama told an audience in the East Room of the White House that the nation’s digital infrastructure has gone unprotected for far too long. "It’s the great irony of our Information Age — the very technologies that empower us to create and to build, also empower those who would disrupt and destroy," he said. "Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups have spoken of their desire to unleash a cyber attack on our country — attacks that are harder to detect and harder to defend against. Indeed, in today’s world, acts of terror could come not only from a few extremists in suicide vests but from a few key strokes on the computer — a weapon of mass disruption." The president said the United States’ economic prosperity, public safety and national security all depend on a secure digital infrastructure, and that he will soon name a new cyber czar who will straddle both his economic and national security teams. "This is also a matter of public safety and national security. We count on computer networks to deliver our oil and gas, our power and our water. We rely on them for public transportation and air traffic control. Yet we know that cyber intruders have probed our electrical grid and that in other countries cyber attacks have plunged entire cities into darkness," the president said. The president has long been viewed as one of the most tech-savvy men to sit in the Oval Office to date. He carries a secure Blackberry, relies heavily on e-mail, and his 2008 campaign’s grassroots efforts via the internet was an unprecedented approach to reaching younger voters. "I know how it feels to have privacy violated," President Obama said, relaying how his campaign website was hacked during the general election. "Hackers managed to penetrate our computer systems. To all of you who donated to our campaign, I want you to all rest assured, our fundraising website was untouched," he said with a smile. The president also unveiled a 60-day cyberspace policy review conducted by the National Security Council and Homeland Security Council. The review contains a number of suggested mid and long term action plans, including: initiating a national public awareness and education campaign to promote cyber security, prepare cyber security incidence response plan, and create research and development strategies to focus on technology that will enhance security. — Yunji de Nies

As evidenced by this one sentence…”The president has long been viewed as one of the most tech-savvy men to sit in the Oval Office to date.” The scope, dimensions and intelligence of our President is the burr in the saddle of his distractors. They cannot rewrite history to make themselves appear good and righteous, but by inference through negative and defaming attacks they want to appear good and righteous now and in the future. You lost the election, get over it; admittedly that may difficult to do since you will lose again in 2010 and 2012.

Ronnie Van Zant: Hmmm when you said “This is just a pretense for governmental censorship down the road…all in the name of “national security.” did you obtain that from one of the documents available under Bush/Cheney through the FOIA? As Obama has stopped with the inspection of incoming shipping containers at or ports, stopping the construction of the fence on the Mexican border (It helps, ask our border patrol) and all the defense cutting, I hardly think Obama is looking after the American people. ITS A POWER GRAB, THAT’S ALL IT IS

All you people need to wake up and get out of the 2 party system that is ruining our country and way of life. The government is just too big to control all the systems and so this will go on for a long time. We really don’t have any money left to do what it takes to secure our systems. It would require billions upon billions to do so and I don’t see it happening any time soon or ever for that matter.
Posted by: Eric | May 29, 2009, 1:46 pm 1:46 pm
This shouldn’t be a partisan issue – the government should have a clear leader in keeping our information infrastructure functional and secure. We already know there are number of groups dealing with the issue now – at a minimum the NSA and military. This just gives them a seat at the table so if some router vulnerability they find could shut down the entire US internet overnight, that message will get the appropriate attention.

Obama attempting to ‘take over’ the internet is about as likely as Gandhi dropping a nuke on London.
Beefing up security on critical nodes is a good idea. But controlling the ‘Net? Yeah, good luck. You could fry every computer in the world and we’d rebuild the Net with laser pointers and mirrors. And the first thing we’d transmit is naked pictures. It’s tradition.
So if the Army Corps of Hackers gets out of line, we’ll take ‘em down a peg. Don’t sweat it.

Herewego: When you posted “The UN thinks they should have control of the internet. I hope this isn’t a step by Obama to hand it over to them” does a dis-service to honesty and feeds the ignorance quite paramount by the anti-Obama sentiment often displayed. The issue of which you speak was raised initially at global conferences in 2005 and it has been soundly REJECTED by the United Nations because (surprise, surprise !!) it would give too much control to countries that don’t embrace the idea of open information. That is the hallmark of Democracy and something President Obama embraces – unlike the secrecy of the Bush/Cheney years, the secret energy committee meetings and the silencing of Freedom of Information Act requests.

The internet is the result of pork barrel, earmarked government funding anyhow, which every right winger will tell you never created a single job – so isn’t it appropriate that it be eliminated? And what better way to eliminate it than have someone in the same government that funded and aided it’s creation tasked to help ensure it remains stable.

I would say a by the end of this year, after that, its on Obama, you don’t plan attacks like 911 in 7 months, the tickets were purchased in the prior year, most of the seats were purchased to keep the planes empty. Obama has this year to blame Bush, He has been doing very well at that. you can also blame Pelosi and the “Majority” as well, they had a little stake in running our country.

“Revisit 2001-2008 and I believe freedom was far more under attack than you want to realize.”
This is either very subtle sarcasm or a brilliant example of the willing suspension of disbelief.
Obama wants to stop detractors from talking about him. Obama’s life began with loss, hurt, confusion, alienation, frustration. Out of these he constructed a psychological “mask” that still endures.
Obama’s pain still controls his personality. Obama’s sense of loss, exclusion, frustration and fantasy still overarch his personality.
All of the inadequacies and frustrations he perceived as a child still drive him and still control his personality. He won’t learn how to remove the Mask because he continues to be afraid there is nothing behind it.
Control of the internet and what people are saying about him will help him soothe his feelings of inadequacy and need to, not just be admired, but be loved.

This is absurd – all 19 tickets were booked between August 25th and Sept 5th 2001. This is documented fact. Most airlines don’t even sell tickets a year ahead of time. They certainly did not purchase most of the other seats either.

Too bad nobody got the memo years ago to keep it simple and now we are making it even more complex these days. Our bills our 1,000 pages long and we expect something good to come out of that? Never will and when nobody wants to buy our debt, the governement will have to raise interest rates to get revenue and then the inflation train comes into town like in the late 70′s and 80′s.
Who is gonna be able to buy a house when the interest is 15%+ and who is gonna buy a car with interest rates at 20%+. Simple economics is completely overlooked by both parties and it makes me and millions others sick because we actually know what the consequenses are and most in the government have their party glasses on and super glued to their face.

deb:”Of course it is a threat, but do we need to continue to add yet another position to this growing govt staff?”
What do you mean by add another position? Obama does not control the budget, only the allocation of the (non-earmarked) executive portion of it. As far as payroll goes, this is a net zero impact (although watch the 2010 budget I guess).

Or better yet – anyone who still think Nojoe has a shred of credibility when he says the terrorists booked the majority of the seats on the 4 planes, check out the report for yourself. I personally believe that boosting our cyber defense mechinery is crucial and necessary for national security. However, in the light of the rapid goverment expansion that Obama’s proposing, I hope he does not move toward tighter internet control and censoring as a component of this cyber security policy package. We all know too well how China is maintaining rigorous censorship and heavy filtering of “unwanted” contents in an attempt to indoctrinate and brainwash. I hope, and am sure that Obama can come up with a sensible way to moniter suspicious cyber activities without infriging on freedom and privacy.

Trust me from the people I am talking to they do not like either party these days. Bush was a huge spender and expanded the government and now we have Bush x10 in Obama. The 2010 elections will most likely be a big surprise to many and the number of people calling themselves independents are the most in 70 years. There has to be something going on there so don’t act like they are all for Obama. They are getting sick and tired of politics and fast. Obama is no different than any other politician these days so understand that first. Change was a slogan to get elected. Now its advance what Bush started.
You can never make people stronger without having them fail sometime. We can’t seem to realize that and its a recipe for disaster. Self esteem society will implode from the inside.

Okay after reading through all of these comments I have come to realize that human nature has suffered a huge hit of stupidity beyond even my wildest dreams. Issue 1: Obama controlling the internet “Let me make this as simple as possible” The internet is a network of servers worldwide that consists of millions of computers. It would take a super computer bigger than the state of new york to even begin to try and monitor that much net traffic. But hey, I wouldn’t be surprised if it hasn’t already been bankrolled into some type of ridiculous democratic stimulus package. Oh dear, what if Obama knows I don’t like him…….I say nothing behind his back that I wouldn’t say directly to his face. What are you people afraid of? It’s time to cowboy up! Issue 2: If you are bold enough to log into abc to post a comment you should at least learn to spell and use proper grammer. I do hope no terrorist is reading this thread, because they’ll probably attack all of you people tomorrow. You so adamantly defend your right to free speech, but our constitution grants no rights for you to be ignorant. Issue 3: Stop Whining about Obama in general. We just have to ride out this stupidity for 8 years at most. That’s what we get for handing the key to the country to a man who never ran anything in his life and doesn’t have enough common sense to lead a Boy Scout troop. And that my friends is “THE WICKED TRUTH”.

The people were not happy under the last administration and now they aren’t happy under the new administration. Part of the problem is that we have locked ourselves into just 2 parties. These 2 monster polical parties make it impossible for individuals affiliated with some other party to have any influence or affect on our political system. The only way we’re going to get our voices heard is to stop supporting BOTH parties. Join the Constitution or Libertarian party–or any other party. Donate to the party of your choice and WORK for them. Stop being part of the machine that continues to put one professional politician after another in office. Become part of the solution. Then maybe, just maybe, we might start seeing a real difference.

dividedwestand: “how about you and I as a citizen, where is the web sight Biden said would be available to show where our money is getting spent, no web sight”
Which one? Recovery.gov? Or USAspending.gov? Personally, I’m not sure why the existing reports were considered inadequate, but I guess more information is better. Although clearly there can never be enough to stop all the whining, and “better than ever before” is still considered a total failure if it is not 100% perfect.

I am all for increased cyber security and am pleased the president is making it a priority. I hear there will be increased military focus on the subject, too, and that will be even better.
However, I wish Obama had put this position in Homeland Security rather than creating yet another czar. I know he loves the ‘czar’ positions– which gives him the flexibility to appoint people without having to go through Senate confirmations and to have people who are not as subject to Senate oversight as Cabinet positions. Enough is enough. Since it is an ongoing problem, and it truly is, then we need a division in a recognized department to deal with it. Homeland Security seems the logical place. Obviously there are already plenty of people dealing with the issue in the government already, and the czar will just coordinate and focus their efforts.

Its funny how our education system gets worse, but the people think they are getting smarter. John Adams stated that the only way for freedom and liberty to prevail for a long time is to keep the people educated.
Nowadays its more about your self esteem and how cool you can be at school. This is the fall of our country and no president or congress can change that, but I do see some taking full advantage of peoples ignorance and that is a very sad thing to see. You people wouldn’t beleive how much our citizens do not know, but they talk as though they are experts and most of the time I spend correcting people with the facts and not hear-say.

Good post, Mamabear. Because there is no viable third party, there is no need to form a coalition in Congress, hence there will always be partisanship. We need a viable 3rd party to represent those of us who identify as independents (and are probably as numerous as Democrats or Republicans). C’mon, Joe Lieberman and John McCain…start that national Independent party. The middle is far bigger (and saner) than the left or the right.

We need more cyber security so Obama’s computer will not be hacked into as he sends his feckless begging pleas by email to Ahmadinejad to stop building nuclear weapons.
According to our great President-er- appeaser, real nuclear weapons are not a threat and we should do nothing other than talk about how we want to get rid of them.

I certainly support improving education, but I have found the current crop of college graduates more than competent and pretty sharp overall. While our K-12 system has always lagged a bit, our colleges and universities are still the best in the world. Heck, California’s universities are the match for any other entire country’s in the world.

Significantly lower than Bush post 9/11. 64% is not that great a rating after 5 months in office.

This is what I mean. Obama’s Debt already by far out numbers what Bush and the Republicans did. Get your facts straight and stop listening to the yokals. 1.8 Trillion already and then the interest on that debt is huge as well. Where are the politicians that shut down the government in the 90′s to get a balanced budget. And I will inform you it was not Clinton. Everyone is political these days and not doing what they should. They are doing what they think will get people to like them.

I think that Obama is right to seek greater cyber protection. The US has other national security concerns as well, and I think a great way to help alleviate some risk of foreign insurrections is to focus more on eradicating severe poverty. People are much more likely to become radicals and destabilize regions when they do not have the option of doing a day’s worth of honest work. The Borgen Project has good info on the estimated cost of ending global poverty:
$30 billion: Annual shortfall to end world hunger.
$550 billion: U.S. Defense budget.

While I admire the spirit of your suggestion, it’s a bit misleading to suggest $30 billion would end world hunger. Without a military campaign and nation building, that wouldn’t even end hunger in Zimbabwe. How could we even get a start on North Korea? (And Iraq has showed the cost of regime change is a couple orders of magnitude over $30 billion!).

“Significantly lower than Bush post 9/11.”
You’re citing the country rallying around its President after being attacked?
“64% is not that great a rating after 5 months in office.”
Gallup:
So far in May, Barack Obama has averaged 65% job approval. Since World War II, only three of the previous eight presidents elected to their first terms — Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan — have had a higher average approval rating in May of their first year. Obama’s average exceeds those of the three most recent presidents — George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush.

jhw, yes, our universities are still the best in the world, but that does not mean that we are turning out students as sharp as those of the past. I still teach some amazing students, but they are fewer and further between than they used to be. My colleagues at other schools, and my sons in major universities (including a grad student at Stanford) say they see deterioration as well. We are dumbing down the academy as a general rule to deal with the increased number of students coming to college and the expections of administrators and the public that we find a way to get most of them through. Not everyone in college these days belongs there, but it is hard to convince them of that or to weed them out through grades. I gave less than 10 Fs in a class of 200 this semester and still heard about it– the 40% of the class that made an A didn’t seem to bother anyone at all. Once they get into college, professors are pressured to keep them there. Grade inflation is a problem and college degrees are being watered down.

Angie in Pa:”Are you forgetting the Fact Bush did Not include the 2 wars in his Budget?”
While it is true he played games to keep his wars off the books as much as possible, they do ultimately show up in his deficit numbers. And Obama is spending money – the debate is over those who believe it’s better to tighten our belts a couple notches and huddle in a box versus those who think it’s better to invest in a new suit and go to job interviews. There are many examples of what happens when an economy is allows to lose momentum and languish in a shrinking output – shrinking revenue death spiral.

Grade inflation is a perpetual problem, but from the side of a engineer who tries hard to hire good people, I haven’t had any problems. (Although I may just be lucky to work for a boutique firm that attracts good folks.)

Looks like his majesty has just come up
with something else the goverment needs to do for us.`Democrats, republicans are
just the same. They promise to do something different than the last administration and continue the lies and
abuses.I want my goverment to maintain our roads and infrastructures, keep a
strong military for our defense, and to keep their nose out of every aspect of my life.We are heading down a socialist
road being led by a goverment that blames the worlds problems on everything and everyone regardless of the nature of its beginning. I dont want to support the world,I dont wish to feed the world, and I dont want to house and care for the world. If people would realise that our responsibilities are to are selves we would not need the bleeding heart liberals or the middle of the road conservatives that take our money and refuse to listen to us. Our
present administration is not looking out for the average person. They be-
if they lie to us enough that we will believe that we cant survive without them. Write your senators, write your
represenitives, write any and all politicians that work for you. Tell them we want our country back, we dont
wish to apologise to the terrorists and dictators of the world. Now is the time to stand up and show these traitors why we are the greatest nation in the world. To often people forget what this country has done for so many in this world. United State politicians look around, the people that you dismiss so easily may be the ones some day who de-
cide that our freedom that you step on are once again worth fighting foe.

Over the years, post high school education has been used to absorb people who are unable to find suitable employment.. sort of holding bins.. until the job market begins to recover.
And, I am not saying this is a bad thing, education, for whatever reason, gives people a chance to go further in their postponed careers…

While my life is set, house is paid for finances are all in order, all you big government lovers that voted for this both young and old, as you all sit at your coffee shops, ride your public transportation, work 3/4 of the day to pay for make shift government programs (Taxes), I want you to look back on all the people that worked hard for their money, got the reap the benefits of it and had the the freedom to travel in their huge motor homes, drive hot rod cars, go out on that lake in their nice big yacht, by a mini bike for the kid, that are now ban from kids, and ask you self. What was it like to be free, and not be a subject of our socialist government?…

de Nies: “The president has long been viewed as one of the most tech-savvy men to sit in the Oval Office to date.”
Because he uses a smartphone, email, and a mailing list for supporters he is this great technical god, now. This constant drum-beat about Obama being this “tech-savvy” computer-god illustrates yet another example of liberals in the media over-hyping Obama. Who in the professional world doesn’t use the above listed technical tools these days? Very few. They take something average and inflate it to the point that one believes they are witnessing someone extraordinary. Rinse and repeat over and over again until it is common knowledge.
de Nies: “”I know how it feels to have privacy violated,” President Obama said, relaying how his campaign website was hacked during the general election.”
The Internet has been fine without the great-technical-one’s intervention. I’d rather the Internet not suffer the same fate as some of his more famous technical mishaps such as his hacked campaign website and the region-locked DVD set given to the British PM.

Although I dislike the increasing bureaucracy under Bush and Obama cybersecurity is a serious issue so this is a good thing to take on.
I am wary about the “smart grid” being proposed due to its usage in other countries, but cyber security is a good initiative and a necessary function of government in the digital age.
Just hopefully a system isn’t adopted that can fall prey to government abuse.

Jhw, I’m glad you aren’t having problems finding qualified people. I agree, there are excellent students out there. But there’s a lot of dreck as well, and it is my observation from the trenches of academia that as numbers of students in college rise, most of the additional population seems to fall in the dreck column. But I keep working hard to educate them all, the talented and the clueless alike.
