Obama’s Date Night in New York
ABC News' Vija Udenans Reports: Today Pres. Obama and the First Lady are taking their 'date night' to New York, dinner and a Broadway show. Mid-afternoon the President, tie-less in a stunning black suit escorted the first lady to Marine One on South Lawn, while Sasha, the youngest daughter watched and waved from the upper balcony.
Michelle Obama wore a sleeveless, body-fitting, knee length, black cocktail dress and black heels that almost stuck in the South lawn sod. The President took her hand as they continued to the waiting chopper.
A White House press spokesperson tells us the President had explained the visit, "I am taking my wife to New York City because I promised her during the campaign that I would take her to a Broadway show after it was all finished."
The couple did not take the large 747 to New York, but flew a much smaller C-20 (G3). The press pool flew in a separate plane, identified by the military as a G5, followed by a staff in a third plane (G3). White House staff said the smaller planes were more fuel efficient.
AF-1 landed at Kennedy Airport. Marine One flew them over the Brooklyn Bridge to Lower Manhattan.
The motorcade made its way over to West Street, banged a right on a cobblestone Clarkson, then on to Carmine. They ended up at 6th and Washington place.
The first couple dined at Bluehill Restaurant where reservations are reportedly hard to get. The restaurant features "locally grown fare" and
has it's own farm in upstate new York.
The first couple arrived at the Belasco theater on West 44th Street, where they will see "Joe Turner's Come and Gone."
Earlier in the day, both parents attended eldest daughter, Malia's soccer match. Spectators informed the press pool that Malia's team, "the tsunamis" did win.
They are expected to return to the White House tonight.

The GOP needs to get a grip. The taxpayers have paid plenty for 8 years as he went back and forth to his ranch in Texas. Really guys get a grip.

So, instead of the normal 747-200, they elected to take three planes. I wonder how much fuel was really “saved”. Plus, let’s not forget the massive C5 that carries the presidential helicopters and limo plus additional SS vehicles. This “date night” was outrageously expensive, no matter how they choose to spin (the media that is).

This Obama date night trip to New York, is a hell lot cheaper than flying a couple of detainees from Afghanistan to Guantanamo Bay in an Air Force C117. I didn’t hear anything said about that from the RNC.

How much did this trip cost the taxpayers? Another $350K? I’m sick and tired of Obama ridiculing the automakers for flying to DC in their private jets yet he keeps flying all over the country like there is no tomorrow. People are losing their homes and jobs, we’re told to tighten our belts and yet he’s out there blowing all our tax dollars. What a joke.

It really isn’t in keeping with the message of our President to buckle down and live on less if we see him take his wife on a jet-set evening in New York. Sorry, this is about as politically correct as when Michelle Obama was seen wearing $550 while visiting a food bank. This man has changed!

The salary package for the President of the United States is public and well known. You should just say you hate Obama and leave it at that – you’d look a lot less foolish.
Our president caught a show on Broadway; I’ve done the same thing before with my wife and appreciate seeing our country’s leader mix with the normal folks.

Posted by: granni | May 30, 2009, 10:07 pm 10:07 pm
It was the one-time fulfillment of a promise. It was Marine One. While it might be reasonable for most politicians, it is not reasonable to think Obama can just hop on Amtrak without the taxpayers incurring even more of an expense.
The GOP attack machine will once again find no reasonably intelligent individual siding with them on this – but what else is new lately?
The GOP can try to make this an issue, but they won’t find a willing audience with this one.

Interesting juxtaposition with recent E-mails I received from friends living in downtown Chicago who in recent days witnessed fairly well-dressed people digging through restaurant dumpsters for food in broad daylight. I kid you not. Pity they didn’t get the memo that Obama’s Era of Hope and Change is here! I wonder how long it’ll take for the mainstream media to report these stories.

That’s so GREEN of them to jet to another city just for a few hours. Did Al Gore fly there in his private jet to meet them? I guess eating “local produce” offset all the jet fuel expended.
Honestly it would be great for them to go to a Broadway show IF they were already in NYC for a GOOD reason. Ever heard of combining trips? It’s one way to reduce your MASSIVE carbon footprint that you’ve been laying down for years now.

I didn’t hear Republicans complaining about how much money it cost to outfit the Crawford Ranch for George Bush’s four month annual vacations. He needed communications/maintenance/security. That costs much more than a night out in NYC.
The RNC did put out a statement saying it was wrong for the Obamas to spend a night out while General Motors filed for bankuptcy.
Well I think it was wrong when George Bush flew out to California to get a guitar, while 1,000 people drowned in New Orleans.
But that’s just me. I’m one of those “No longer welcome” Republicans that Newt and Rush hate so much, so I’m a traitor in their books.

If he did not have the security requirements demanded by the secret service, he could have flown himself and his wife there for a few hundred dollars (a common short hop, or taken the train for about the same or a touch more).
Is being president now a prison sentence (unless you’re Republican of course, then commute from Texas in the 747 and fly around the country to raise money every election year without a peep of negative coverage from the corporate media)?

The only argument that Barack supporters have is to toss around other Presidential spending. Though, it is nice to have a date night, these married people need to set an example for the country.Either act Presidential and batten down the hatches and show spending restraint or resign, go back to Chicago and enjoy date night without spending tax payers money to do so. I am apalled when our country is so in debt to China and we have such severe problem that Prez “O” would flaunt financial “free spending” and go to New York without conducting official business. I say with this example let’s give the couple date night every night–back in Illinois.

I think it would be very proactive of The President to pay his way out of pocket for a night out with his wife and all future outings by him or senators, congressmen/women who think that socializing and dating and networking are national rites voted to them by hard working Americans. They are not. If you want to talk the talk then walk the walk. That goes for all people who seek public office not just the President. Showing yourself in public does nothing to boost confidence in taxpayers who cannot afford a ticket to a show or even a movie and single moms whose only dream is not to die before all their kids’ graduate high school. Bubble time is over. Ask Jimmy Carter for some advice. He seems to be smart enough to have trumped Clinton, Bush and the rest for humanitarian sensibility. He is busy building houses for poor people in his free time.

This trip in just a drop in the bucket for the general population’s tax dollars. What you better prepare for is the inflation you will soon see as a result of the out of control spending taking place keeping car makers, banks and insurance companies out of bankruptcy. Oh, sorry, some are in bankruptcy so we will throw another 100 billion to them next month. Remember 1979 when inflation was 21% and the poor will feel it more than anyone else. It is Bush’s fault though so it doesn’t matter.

People are allowed to enjoy themselves, even after the glut and greed by the banking sector ceo’s and their ineptitude that almost destroyed the financial system.
Get out, enjoy yourself and quit being so quick to judge everything the Democrats and this administration do in such a negative light.
You seem desperate for anything to smear these people with – take a look at the Bush presidency and the number of holidays Bush took. Show a little balance.

Maybee:”Most people don’t fly to another city just for dinner, though. That’s pretty extravagant.”
For many who make such time away a priority, having nearby doting grandparents willing to take the kids makes it quite reasonable actually to do such a weekend away every few months. Obviously, the demands of his job at the moment make a weekend getaway not really possible (although he did get in a vacation to his family’s home in Hawaii before he took office – and was equally attacked by the GOP hate machine for it).
And if you’re unfamilar with the East Coast, for a normal person flying would be about $50 more than taking a car and on par or cheaper than the train to make that short hop. But as president, the secret service decides how he will travel (although obviously he didn’t dare fly a 747 into NY after our borderline hysterical 1% freaked out last time – and 1% of a few million makes for awfully embarrassing TV).

This isn’t about George Bush vs. Barack Obama or the Republicans vs. the Democrats. It isn’t about sour grapes either. What it does show is truly poor taste. We are in the middle of a recession, there are horrendous amounts of unemployed and people living on the streets. What the President is showing is “conspicuous consumption” and he isn’t trying to hide it one bit. Jon F:” What the President is showing is “conspicuous consumption” and he isn’t trying to hide it one bit. Rulers should lead by example and this is one poor example for those Americans that are in deep trouble right now. ”
The economy is in a recession due to a contration in consumer spending. In REALITY, the economy would be best off at the moment if the people who can afford did indeed follow the president’s example and go out to dinner and a show once a month.

“Actually, with our national debt China and the very wealthy would feel it the most.”
Perhaps in nominal dollars, but as a percentage of income, the working poor and middle class will feel the negative effects of inflation much more acutely, as they did during the 70′s and early 80′s (I lived it). For many Americans, unless their financial houses are in order, the upcoming inflationary depression is going to bring them a lot of misery. They won’t take kindly to the excessive spending displayed by the Obamas while they’re struggling to put food on the table. True leaders lead by example, and Obama is no leader.

So, jhw, are you telling me most people DO fly to another city just for dinner?
You know, it actually made sense for the Big 3 bosses to fly private planes, and it made sense for Wells Fargo to bring their sales people to Vegas, and it made business sense for Northern Trust to have parties in LA. But they were all reprimanded by Obama for it because it looked bad since they were being paid in part by the taxpayers. The same source of money, I believe, for the flights tonight.
Appearances are very important to this WH. We’ll see how this trip works for them. Will it be more Diana or Marie Antoinette

JWH539′s quote “The economy is in a recession due to a contration in consumer spending. In REALITY, the economy would be best off at the moment if the people who can afford did indeed follow the president’s example and go out to dinner and a show once a month. ”
Our retraction in consumer spending is due to the fact that there are a great deal of people out there who are flat broke – or concerned about the possibility of that in the near future.
Regardless – what I am talking about is purely bad taste. Its like waving a pile of money as you drive by a homeless person. Add to that the fact that you’ve been elected President of the United States – and its your obligation to act with some kind of tact in hard economic times. This isn’t a “must have” in the Obama’s personal lives. It simply sends the wrong message and offends those who are truly destitute.
We’re talking more than a few planes here. Think of all the costs for Secret Service protection and control probably for months leading up to this night. All the costs to coordinate everything – its enormous.

Personally, I am enormously lucky in this financial climate. However, the last thing I would do around those friends of mine who have been laid off and/or lost their homes is to make any overt display of any wealth. I care too much about these people to make them feel bad about their predicament. When you care about people you make sacrifices. It really is a case of common tact and decency.

“Rather than encouraging an atmosphere of confidence to keep the 90% of people still employed to continue living rather than retreat into economic bunkers and crater the economy for a decade?”
He’s giving people false hope. The solution to our current problems is not more spending–it’s saving. Americans in general have very small financial cushions. Very few people have even a month of expenses saved up. It is lunacy to keep spending unnecessarily when your financial situation is on the edge, a recession is deepening due to reckless Fed fiscal policies, and the unemployment rate continues to move upward. I have friends in professional fields that have been laid off 2 and 3 times inside of a year!
Incidentally, unemployment is actually 15.4%. That’s the BLS U6 measurement which includes underemployment, otherwise known as “real unemployment.” Economic forecasters expect it to hit the 20% to 25% range in the coming months. Given such a climate, there’s no way in heck I’m spending unless I have to.

There is a lot of business that can be done in New York if they would like to combine work and pleasure.

“President Bush is getting the kind of break most Americans can only dream of — nearly five weeks away from the office, loaded with vacation time.
“The August getaway is Bush’s 49th trip to his cherished ranch since taking office and the 319th day that Bush has spent, entirely or partially, in Crawford — nearly 20 percent of his presidency to date.”
“President Bush spent a month at the ranch shortly before the Sept. 11, 2001.”

“Stacey you totally missed the previous poster’s point. If the well off and the wealthy hoard all their money and quit spending – things do not get better.”
That wasn’t his point at all. He was referring to the “90%” of consumers still working, most of whom aren’t wealthy.
But to your point, which is valid, the wealthy are a lot less wealthy now due to the economic meltdown. Obama has also promised them that they’ll be taxed more heavily. Some states like New Jersey have instituted millionaire’s taxes, which means the wealthy in those states necessarily spend less. Plus those that run businesses, in an effort to stay profitable, will cut costs, move their businesses to low-tax states (or out of the country), lay off employees, or outsource them. It’s not theory. It’s happening all around us.
Given this reality, I fail to understand how the wealthy who run businesses will improve the fundamentals of our economy and our national work force when they’re constantly bombarded with higher taxes and increased costs due to inflation and new regulations.

If any of you have a child who did something wrong, and his only excuse to you was “Billy did it, too”, did you then say, “Oh, well, honey, then that makes it OK, run along now”? Of course you didn’t. So why, when Obama does the exact same things that we’ve screamed at Bush for, do you excuse his actions by the inevitable “Bush did it, too”? “Change” was supposed to be different from Bush, not doing the same darn things and following the same darn policies and rationalizing it all away by “Bush did it, too”. Wake up and hold Obama accountable to the standards he set forth for himself in the campaign, not the standards of the Bush administration that you constantly complained about for 8 years. The problem in this country today is that we determine right and wrong through the lens of politics, not by counting on our own moral compass, judgment and common sense.

hmm, i just read that the RNC (Sore loser party)is denouncing this date night because the tax payers are paying for the trip and security and on their website the headline “Putting on a show: Obamas wing into the city for an evening out while another iconic American company prepares for bankruptcy”. You know what, I have never bought an american car because they are crap!!. The “BIG 3″ always touted buying american, but they had mediocre cars, gas guzzling and all my friends who bought them were lemon.
I’m going to quote Lee Iacoca “in this business you either lead or get out of the way”. Well guess what the american people heeded his remarks and bought the leader of quality and reliability, the japanese. I have no qualms or sympathy for GM. They did this to themselves, Obama is doing in his ability to fix GM’s Golden Parachute CEO’s (CASe in point wiki chuck wagoner and see his Golden Parachute, your going to laugh).
And look how much it cost the uS tax payers for Mr Bush to parade in a “mission accomplish” get up. The jets to fly him there were a 747 air force 1 and an EA-6B prowler, you do the math. just that one episode costs more than obama’s trip to New york. Plus everyone will now eat at the restaurants they ate at and the play they saw. Talk about economic stimulus!!
Rebute that Mr Steele!

babs – try reading this again. The degree of change from Bush’s behavior is HUGE! I’m surprised you can’t recognize the qualitative and quantitive difference.
Wednesday, August 3, 2005
Washington Post
“President Bush is getting the kind of break most Americans can only dream of — nearly five weeks away from the office, loaded with vacation time.
“The August getaway is Bush’s 49th trip to his cherished ranch since taking office and the 319th day that Bush has spent, entirely or partially, in Crawford — nearly 20 percent of his presidency to date.”
“President Bush spent a month at the ranch shortly before the Sept. 11, 2001.”
Do you get the picture?
My how quickly people forget the past standards set – and how much things really have changed.
Pay attention.

Stacy,
You’re right. With all the new taxes coming down the road at them, the “wealthy” will not be spending a whole lot. What they will be doing is divesting themselves of any investment that has any risk, for why do you want to take a risk if you are going to pay a tax of over 50% on it if you win? In fact its a good idea to sell all investments now before Obama’s increases in the capital gains tax take effect. Its not like they are going to earn much in the next few years anyway. Then again isn’t this exactly what NOT to do in a recession?
The worst part of it is that by making the label of “wealthy” at $250K per year, you are giving a steep haircut to the upper half of the middle class. These tend to consist of small business owners who do not have a corporate structure. Their companies are “pass-through” entities that are taxed as personal income. Not only do they get nailed, but they lay off some of their employees to make ends meet. Half of California’s workforce is employed by small business. Not a good idea in a recession either.
Sorry, the Obama’s still were tacky going out tonight on taxpayer $.

One more thing – does anyone here remember a president before George Bush? While Bush was a bad president many times over, it does not make Obama a good one. When looking at these things, it might help to look at all the presidents in the last 30 or 40 years. Most of them were not clowns. They were quite intelligent people who learned the hard way that good intentions did not always make an effective President. Boy, you all make me feel old!
Posted by: Jon F | May 31, 2009, 1:35 am 1:35 am
I would think anybody with a lot of money and even half a brain is investing it like crazy right now! This is the opportune time.
And if they are clever they will be investing it in ‘future’ businesses and technologies.
This will be a very good thing as long as the entire ball of wax doesn’t continue to disintegrate as it did at the tail end of the Bush administration.
It’s hard to say if the previous culture of gross consumerism and gross waste that America became so famous for world wide is sustainable in the future. We’re going to have to come up with ways to live more sensibly and I don’t think the old models will work.
This is where I feel we might be fortunate to have a President like Obama – he is intellectually brilliant, he is a visionary, he is very much future oriented with 2 young children – and he is apparently not a fundamentalist christian who hopes the world will come to a disastrous end because ‘it is god’s will’.
Posted by: danita | May 31, 2009, 1:38 am 1:38 am
Danita, perhaps you are the one who should pay attention. The WaPo article you cite was written when Bush had been in office for four and a half years, not 5 months, so the comparison is hardly valid. But, don’t worry, I have no doubt that if President Obama keeps to his present course he will overcome Bush in no time. By the way, I wasn’t defending Bush, just pointing out the hypocrisy of those who constantly criticized him for every move he made, and now just cannot bring themselves to criticize Obama when he does the same things.
Posted by: babs | May 31, 2009, 1:42 am 1:42 am

You’re comparing one night out in New York with 20% of Bush’s presidency spent on vacation at his ranch?
You have a vivid imagination.
Posted by: danita | May 31, 2009, 1:48 am 1:48 am
danita, you are the reason I rarely engage Obama supporters in dialogue on any post. Please do not tell me that this little trip to New York is the first unnecessary trip that Obama has taken in the past 5 months. Please! Fundraisers in Las Vegas and LA alone this week cost taxpayers a bundle, and he didn’t even pretend that they were just a sideline to doing something constructive for all Americans. Your defense of this while quoting articles condemning George Bush for the same thing is hypocrisy at its finest.
Posted by: babs | May 31, 2009, 1:58 am 1:58 am
babs – the degree of change from Bush’s behavior and 20% of his presidency spent on vacation in Crawford is – and will be – HUGE!
I’m surprised you can’t recognize the qualitative and quantitative difference that is taking place already.
And don’t try to tell me Bush didn’t – in addition to pissing away all those tax payer dollars on trips to his ranch – attend NUMEROUS fund raisers for the GOP.
Do you expect there to be no fund raising trips, and no vacations under President Obama? Get real!
Again, we are already seeing a quantitative and qualitative change. It is my belief we will see more. Who is right? We will find out.

Oh Boy! There were other presidents before Bush! History in America goes further back than 10 years. Bush wasn’t the only one to let things get the way they did.
And no, its not a good time to invest whatever money you have left at this juncture. While there may be emerging industries, the fate of them is unclear and what is clear is that taxes will be heavily skewed to the higher incomes (not just the wealthy). At the rate we are going we will end up like some European socialist democracy with 20% of its citizens on some form of welfare, health and welfare totally managed by the government, and taxes at 70% or so. They don’t have a lot of opportunity to move up with taxes like that. Its easier to sit back and let the government tell you what to do and when to do it.
Now there’s nothing wrong with Europe – but I thought people in America liked our standards and way of life here. Wasn’t the greatness of this country where you had a chance to start with nothing and end up at the top? Now, in Europe, that is not very often the case – certainly not Western Europe.
Posted by: Jon F | May 31, 2009, 4:37 am 4:37 am
Jon F it seems like the glory days of America you so cherish have already been killed off by the last 8 years of disastrous attempts at spurring on the economy by cutting taxes to the high income crowd and hoping that makes everything rosy.
I think we can see where that got us.
Tax cuts to the rich, half a trillion dollars of additional debt every year of the Bush administration, an economy that just collapsed and the country basically sold off to the Chinese.
And speaking of the presidents who went before, who are you speaking of . … surely not the ones who rang up the largest deficits at the time, like for instance Ronald Reagan? You must mean Bill Clinton who came close to eliminating the deficit until Bush got elected.
Time for everybody to get to work, including those rich cowards who are selfishly hoarding their money. It’s time to invest in the future, not count your money, suck your thumb and whine about the taxes required to pay for the Iraq war fiasco foisted on us by the neo-con crowd. Wish that we could simply pull back history 8 years and avoid that – but it ain’t possible.

Personally, I have no problem with the date night. If anything, wouldn’t it have been nice if the 3rd plane full of the press could have stayed home and left them to enjoy I night in peace, romance, and intimacy. One date night in his first 4+ months in office… it does not even begin to compare to Bush’s 3 weekends in Crawford by this time, 2/16/01, 3/09/01, and 4/12/01. As a nation, we might be collectively better served if we kept in mind our leaders were also human, with families and wives, who practically put all that on the back shelf for most of their tenure to be in constant service to us. Please, show a little compassion, let your heart skip a beat, and do something special for your own spouse and kids. What a better world this would be if everyone carved out a little time to let the ones they love know that they too are special and appreciated.

Finally! You really hit it on the nail.
IF ONLY President Obama and the Democrats had realized THAT instead of condemning the bailed out financial companies for holding meetings in places like Las Vegas. And worse yet, was when President Obama said, “You can’t get corporate jets. You can’t go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayer’s dime.” That sent the wrong message and many individuals and non-bailed out companies took it to heart. Many popular tourist locations, like Las Vegas, took a major economic hit after that comment. Many businesses canceled their conventions and a lot of jobs were lost.
I just wish President Obama would apologize to Las Vegas, the state of Nevada and the nation for his lack of understanding of what actually drives our economy.
We are in this economic mess because then candidate Obama campaigned on his wealth redistribution agenda and announced his plans to tax the top 5% of the American workers to pay for his programs. When then Sen. Clinton bowed out of the race the wealthy began cutting back on their spending. But they really changed their spending habits (including pulling their money out of the stockmarkets) when it became clear that Obama was going to win the election.

He certainly lives up to his motto of ‘wealth redistribution’ by having the taxpayer foot the bill for his “romantic” nightout with his “fashionable” wife.
I can see the need of the Secret Service Agent for security purpose, but two Jets for a team of staff and reporters to be sent along? for what purpose? Was it a night out for presidential duty? No honey, was nothing but the sort of publicity only some shallow celebrities would crave ( but at least those celebrities pay out of their own pocket).
The American people ought to voice their objections over such wasteful self-serving personal activities from Obama. Who knows what else Obama promised his wife before, now and the future, not even himself has a clue -but surely he will just make it up along the way, why not, someone else is paying for the promises.

I personally did not vote for President Obama, and do not often agree with his policies and practices. But on this matter, I am truly happy to see the president showing a nation how to treat his wife!! There is a reason they have what appears to be a solid marriage. It takes work. We need to have a role model showing our youth that relationships don’t just magically happen. Yes, it was expensive, and I’m sure a great many citizens were inconvenienced by this trip. But this is not the first time a president has traveled for pleasure.
While many of us cannot afford a trip like that, a simple trip for a ice cream cone, or a walk in a local park can serve the same purpose. Keeping our families together, and modeling for our children how to keep it working is important. The decline in the social fabric of our nation comes from the demise of our families, be that heterosexual or other. The youth that seems to be all too distant and lacking morality has grown up without a strong tie to family. There is no social program that can teach like a good marriage>

Danita wrote: “…the last 8 years of disastrous attempts at spurring on the economy by cutting taxes to the high income crowd and hoping that makes everything rosy.”
The Bush 2001 tax cuts limited the depth and length of the 2000-2001 recession. Unfortunately our economy took a major hit due to the attacks of 9/11. It was the combination of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts that turned the economy around. In fact we had a tremendous economic boom between September 2003 and December 2007. There were 52 consecutive months of job growth resulting in 5 million new jobs. There was record employment, and the unemployment rate averaged 5.0% during that period. There was also record federal revenues. In fact we had two quarters where revenues exceeded spending.
All of that in spite of the downturn in the housing market and skyrocketing rocketing energy prices. And then the subprime mortgage crisis hit us. Yet even with that triple whammy GDP still rose in the first two quarters of 2008.
Unfortunately 2008 was an election year. The campaign rhetoric–specifically the call for raising taxes on the top 5% of the nation’s wage earners–resulted in the wealthy changing their spending habits. When it became clear that Obama was likely going to win the election, the wealthy started a “revolt” by pulling money out of the stockmarkets and cutting back on travel. This resulted in widespread job losses which added to the massive home foreclosures.
Tax cuts work! They give the American people more money in which to spend on necessities and recreation. Instead of campaigning on raising taxes, had the Democrats made the Bush tax cuts permanent the economic collapse would have been quite a much softer downturn.

‘Waste not, want not’
The Obamas could have a healthy marriage etc without all this wasteful overage. $500 tennis shoes?? Seriously??
They could be a wonderful example of how a couple can live well without living extravagantly. Imagine the message they are giving their children – but then again, we all know what kind of message they feel is appropriate for their children. Look where they went to church and had them baptized.
And all this talk about what George Bush did? I thought Obama was all about change? So why is the theme of their administration either: “It’s all their fault” or “They did it so why can’t we”
What kind of change is this?

So I get it, Bush could go to his ranch in Texas all the time (using Air Force One) and spend more time on vacation than any other modern President, but if Obama wants to go to a city 300 miles away for one night using his Presidential transport it’s unacceptable? And you guys realize he does pay for his play tickets, dinner, etc. out of his salary. He also has to pay for meals his family has at the White House. It’s time that we elevate the debate and criticize his policies rather than him taking some time off!

The rhetoric is calling it ‘raising taxes’ instead of ‘eliminating tax cuts’. Sure, Republicans would be perfectly happy having more of the burden of paying down the debt sit squarely on the shoulders of the middle class. Any short term effect of the wealthy sucking in their belts a little will be easily offset by eliminating these huge tax cuts.

The President, people, is entitled to a private life, time with his family, and time away from the White House and DC. According to reports from all sources, he has been working 14 hour days, not only weekdays but weekends. Without some “down time” he’ll lose both perspective and his ability to function. Are you all saying that he has to spend all of his down time closeted at the White House because there is a recession? Please. Every President has taken getaways — to Camp David, to the “Westeren White House” , to the “Kennedy Compound”, during wars and depressions and recessions — and they have all traveled aboard one of the “airforce one” planes or helicopters — as they MUST. Oddy we heard no complaints from the RNC when Bush was flown to spend 879 days — or 30% of his Presidency — at his ranch in Crawford, TX to vacation; during the “War on Terror”:not even when he remained there during and in the immediate aftermath of Katrina. In the first 5 years of his Presidency, Airforce One had fueled up 56 times to take Bush down to the Ranch. Where was the RNC then?

James Danley, you are a wise wise man.
I didn’t chime in on this thread earlier because it is the kind of thing that does not particularly interest me– an egocentric politician acting egocentrically and telling others to do one thing while he himself does another. This is not news. But it is another sign of the way Obama governs and lives.
I see that it didn’t take long at all for people to start using the thread as an opportunity to bash George Bush.
So we cannot criticize this president for any behavior that any previous president has ever also done? Really?
Oh, and Danita, taking vacations at Crawford are different from what we are discussing here in my opinion. This was not a vacation. Yes, Bush took vacations, where he had a change of scenery while still working, no doubt at a more relaxed level of industry. He took them in Crawford and at Camp David and probably elsewhere. Obama does the same. He has already spent several weekends at Camp David and a weekend back in Chicago. Bush’s long breaks were traditionally in August, when Congress and all of Washington basically vacates the DC premises. It has already been published at the Huffington Post that the Obamas will supposedly be vacationing during that month on tony Martha’s Vineyard.
I think presidents deserve vacations. I know that modern presidents are never off the clock completely and that they can carry the White HOuse around with them for all intents and purposes. So I didn’t get really exercised about Bush’s vacations and won’t get exercised about Obama’s either.
But I do shake my head when the president talks about us all tightening our belts and making sacrifices (when, as others have pointed out, the economy needs people who can afford to be out on the town and spending money) while enjoying such indulgences himself. And he talks about global warming while flying these planes at the drop of a hat (remember when he and VP Biden flew to Colorado for the stimulus signing in SEPARATE planes?) and about government waste while the tax payers pay for this non-multitasking trip. At least he toured a solar panel site when he went out west for his fundraisers last week.
And Michelle was in NYC recently, so he could have shown up that week and taken her out. Or he could have planned a night on the town while he was in NYC to speak at the UN or something. He said he promised Michelle before the election (a la the dog and the girls), but he got elected in November (the press anointed him long before, of course, but that’s when we made it official. If she waited this long, I figure she could have waited until they were headed that direction anyway.

The President has a right to down time and to time with his wife and family away from the White House, and away from Washington. Without it, a man who is — by all accounts — working seven days a week and 14 hours a day most ofthose days, will lose perspective and the ability to function. Every President has taken getawys during depressions, recessions, and wars: to Camp David, to the “Western white House”, to Kennebunkport, to the “Kennedy Compound” — and all have flown to those spots via a plane inr the airforce one fleet, as they MUST. Where were the RNC’s complaints when GW Bush had the fleet fly him to spend 879 days — or 30% of his Presidency — vacationing at his ranch in Crawford, TX? Why, he’d made 56 trips to the ranch in the first 5 years of his presidency, alone — and managed to spend the week Katrina ravaged New Orleans there , as well. And the RNC was silent.
56 times (in the first 5 years of his Presidency) to vacation at his ranch in Crawford, TX ?

James Danley .. ..
The supposed economic ‘gains’ you attribute to the Bush administration were a house of cards built on Bush overspending a half a trillion dollars a year for 8 years straight, with no income (tax) to pay for those expenditures. Artificial money pumped into the system. The result – the house of cards collapsed.
We are left with little choice but to do the best with the mess that administration left and to do whatever will prevent a complete collapse.
“The wealthy started a “revolt” by pulling money out of the stockmarkets”
I always figured this is part of what happened. The rich rode the glut in the stock market and then crashed it so that the less fortunate could lose the money they’d saved and invested and pay the price in lost jobs, lost homes and so on.
Country first my ass, greed first for that wealthy crowd. Good to see you confirm this.

According to the latest IRS statistics, in 2006 the top 5% of the nation’s wage earners–those making more than $153,542–accounted for 36.66% of the nation’s total Adjusted Gross Income. Yet they accounted for 60.14% of the total federal income tax revenue. The bottom 50% of the nation’s wage earners–those making less than $31,987–accounted for 12.51% of the nation’s total AGI. But they accounted for just 2.99% of the total tax federal income tax revenue. Yet you still want to raise taxes even more, shifting even more of the tax burden on the top 5%. It’s no wonder they are “revolting.”

Texgirl, Bush wasn’t lecturing us on how to spend or should I say, not spend our money. This one just flys around like he doesn’t have a care in the world and the press just acts like it is wonderful. His little trip out west for fundraisers cost the American people something like a quarter of a million dollars and then as soon as he gets home, they jet off to NY for an evening. I just wonder if they had to have a decoy Air Force 1 as well as the fleet for the ss and the limos.

That’s right Maria, Bush wasn’t lecturing us he was just overspending the public’s budget by a half a trillion dollars a year for 8 years straight, while flying back and forth on the taxpayers’ dollar to his ranch and appearing at Republican fundraisers. That was just before the economy crashed on his watch.
Give President Obama at least one year before you condemn him in this fashion. And good luck to us attempting to recover from the damage done to the economy.

Not all of them are. While greedy Republicans may be complaining that the wealthy will be unfairly burdened our Democratic operatives in the top percentiles have reported publicly that nothing could be further from the truth. In fact it’s been a total hayride for the wealthy in this country for most of the last 8 years while the middle class has suffered. Many of the beneficiaries acknowledge it and are willing to contribute more by supporting the elimination of Bush’s tax cuts for the rich.

If we look at some of the various tax proposals.. that seem to just appear out of thin air.. these days.. such as a national sales tax, carbon tax, tobacco tax, beer tax..
.. these taxes would affect everyone.. and not equally.. lower income groups would be more severely affected because these taxes would be proportionally (income v. outlay) more detrimental to them….

James Danley,
If you’d like to have a well-rounded discussion about the tax burden in this country being overly and unjustly laden on the wealthy, when quoting statistics, please include some on the difference in total effective tax rate among the income groups. Federal tax, is only one piece of the American tax burden…there are state and local taxes that should be factored into any discussion about tax fairness and reform. Effective tax rate represents the cumulative percent of all taxes paid as a percentage of income. When you look at the whole picture, economists tend to agree that the tax burden is not as skewed to the rich as you’d like us to believe. In fact, “by one measure of the federal, state, and local tax burden, just 3.4 percentage points separate the effective tax rate paid by the top 1 percent of earners from the other 99 percent of American households.” 3.4% separating the haves from the have nots…pretty close to even, some might even argue, almost “flat”.

I have no problem with the Obama’s taking a date night, I think it’s charming. However, when my wife and I have a date night I pay for it, and I can’t even deduct it. Whereas the Obama’s use government airplanes to go on personal trips and require a whole city to incur the cost of the extra security so they can go on a date. The same government requires any corporate executive using a company plane for personal reasons to either determine the cost and reimburse the company or, report the cost as income subject to income tax and report it as perquisite in the executive compensation section of the proxy. Seems hypocritical to not follow the same principle for using his employer’s plane for personal purposes. I’m sure the corporations feel just as strongly that their executives need the extra security and ease provided by a private jet. And for all those who seem inclined to jump on any who critisizes President Obama for anything I feel the same way about President Bush using the planes for personal purposes.

Danita, the economy did not crash because of George Bush (or because of Barack Obama). His tax cuts and economic policies helped shorten the recession that he inherited (it began officially in March of 2001, two months after his inauguration and thus too soon to be laid at his doorstep, just as the current recession _began_ before Obama’s policies kicked in and could have an influence for good or ill) The economy recovered after being further damaged by 9/11 and the recession only officially lasted 8 months.
Recessions are seldom caused only by acts of government, and seldom ended only by acts of government. (To be sure, the impact of such massive spending as Obama is doing remains to be seen and may prove an exception.) There are complicated events that combined to create the conditions for this recession– the housing bubble and subprime lending and derivates excesses chief among them. To say it was caused by Bush overspending, especially given the fact that the deficit spending of those years is completely dwarfed by the deficit spending of the current administration, is laughable.

texgirl, take a deep breathe. I get it- you think Obama is the bee’s knees. That’s fine with me. But let’s reign in the hyperbole. You tell us the poor man needs a break– flying to NYC– because he has been working 14 hour days even on the weekends. Nonsense.
I am sure he has put in some long days of late. AFter all, there have been a lot of major activity going on the world lately and he must work to stay on top of it all, from the auto industry to Iran to North Korea. But let’s be fair here– he’s had plenty of down town in the last few weeks that we know of. He had time for three political fundraisers out west in a two day period, for example. That may be part of the working life of a modern-day politician, but it is not required work for the president at this juncture– that was a decision he made about how to spend his time.
On Memorial Day, he spent the morning laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns and hosting a breakfast for service people– very admirable. And he took the afternoon off to play golf for 4 1/2 hours. (And as I posted at the time, I did not begrudge him a few rounds of golf, although I thought it would have been better to schedule them for Saturday of that weekend instead.) This was on Monday, after he had spent the weekend at Camp David. He left the White HOuse at 6 p.m. on Friday– so no 14 hour day that day. He relaxed that weekend with his wife and kids– again, nothing wrong with that. I applaud his concern for quality time with his kids. But please, spare me the “He works harder than anyone so he should be able to do whatever he wants” proclamations.
He really seems to like Camp David, as many presidents have, as he and the family first spent the weekend there two weeks after inauguration and went back the first weekend in March. This is NOT a criticism of the president, but of Danita for wringing her hands that the poor man should be left alone to whisk his wife off to NYC because he hasn’t had any down time what with his backbreaking schedule.

I do not find it laughable that the Bush administration overspent our money by half a trillion dollars every year for 8 years. And I believe that this money circulating in the economy contributed to an artificial economic ‘health’.
I also think both the Bush administration and the Obama administration felt it essential to pump money into the failing banks and car companies in order to avoid not just a ‘recession’ but far worse.
There is little doubt that cutting taxes to the rich did almost nothing over the long hall of 8 years – the national debt increased hugely and the economy ultimately suffered. And little doubt President Obama inherited an extreme situation when he came into office.
I find it strange that the Republican party preaches ‘small government’ and ‘fiscal responsibility’ and has historically largely done just the opposite.
I hope what the Obama administration has been doing works. I would think there are a lot of state governors, republican and democrat alike, who are thankful and a lot of everyday citizens.

JKS, you seem to miss my point, when you responded to my remark about the Pres and VP travelling to Colorado in separate planes for the signing of the stimulus bill. No, they should not travel in the same plane. But they did not need to both travel all that distance for a bill signing ceremony in the first place– why not sign it in Washington, since we were in such a hurry to get it passed that we couldnt’ wait for folks to read it. And if the president was insistent upon signing it in Colorado, VP Biden could have stayed home in DC and minded the store. It was a waste of energy (and time) for both of them to fly to colorado for this event.

Sorry!!1 But a great Leader leads by example. If the very people that elected you are suffering (no job, worried about how they are going to feed their families) You DON’T jet to New York using their tax dollars and have a night out on the town. You save this for better times for all of us. Your adulation of him is very unfounded. Try admiring someone who does what a great leader does, that is if we have anymore of these people left. It seems as if we are not a united nation anymore, but have been divided forever.

Talk about double standards. They took 3 smaller planes. How practical. It is alot of nerve considering the economic climate in our country. Date nights have to be put on hold until they have to be in NY on business, and then have a date night. If a Republican did this the news media would be all over this event. Obama is abusing the office on this event.

Amy T. the wealthy are likely to spend more on luxury items and likely to own more lavish homes with multiple properties than the average person. That would translate into more city (if applicable) and state sales taxes and more property taxes. The wealthy would also pay more state income taxes (if applicable). So I just don’t buy the notion that the tax burden is arguably “flat.” Now certainly the RATE of the city (if applicable) and state sales taxes and the RATE of the property taxes are probably the same as I am not aware of those taxes being progressive.
I am a strong proponent of the Fair Tax (eliminate the income tax and replace it with a fixed value added tax), with one caveat. Instead of the prebate checks being issued to all individuals, I prefer the idea of opening up duty free stores. These duty free stores would carry basic food, personal items, school supplies and etc., but would not be subject to the value added tax.

When President Obama proposes to raise taxes on the very people who generate over 60% of our tax revenue, he is flirting with danger. You push this segment too far and you will find overall decreased investment and holding back of a significant amount of spending. This will make the recession even worse. Of course, the President couldn’t wait to put this in motion – though it certainly was the wrong time to do so.
The Administration is playing us all for fools. They don’t mind alienating an economically important segment of the population in order to give tax breaks to the remaining 95%. But given our deficits, and the way they are exponentially growing by the day, we will all be in for higher taxes sooner than we could imagine. Tax rebates in the stimulus are less for economic reasons and more for political ones. It “buys” votes in the future. Part of the stimulus bill was to give $250 to every social security recipient. Do you really think that will have a profound effect on the lives of our retired citizens? Of course not, but it will keep the votes coming and we are all falling for it.
Obama’s overambitious agenda depends on two things. The first one is that there is no turn-around of Congress in the off-year elections. If the Democrats see their base shrinking, they will be less prone to vote with the Administration. The second one is to re-elect the President in 2012. If we don’t, and his policies are overturned by his successor, we will have doubled the deficit and have very little to show for it. History will not be kind to the President if this happens. And yes, he very much cares about his role in history. All presidents do – or they wouldn’t be up for the job.

Of course the wealthy are more apt to own multiple homes and purchase more luxury items, thus paying more absolute dollars in municipal and state taxes. This extra purchasing power and the tax revenue it generates is being calculated into their total effective tax burden and still they are paying proportionately (this means percent) only 3.4% more of their income in taxes than the lower 99%. No economist is denying that the rich pay less dollars in taxes. However, those real tax dollars spent, added all together, still do not equate to a significantly greater percent of their total income dollars than the average citizen.
To put it into perspective, in 2004, the bottom 99% of American workers earned an average income of $47,500 and paid a total effective tax rate of 29.4% or $13,965. The top 1% of American workers earned an average income of $978,000 and paid a total effective tax rate of 32.8% or $320,784. The total effective tax rate takes into account all taxes paid, federal, state, and local (including personal and corporate income taxes, property taxes on all their properties, all the sales taxes they pay on everything they buy, and the excise tax, estate taxes, etc.) Yes, there is a big difference in absolute dollars paid in taxes ($306,819.) but the tax rate difference is small, only 3.4% separates the two groups. This small percent difference is why some leading economists have been arguing that our current tax structure has become effectively flat.
No matter where one weighs in on the politics of taxes, debating whether the current system is just and fair, who pays too much or who pays too little, it is pretty safe to say that no matter how you see it, in light of the deficit, economy, literacy rate in this county, health care crisis in this country, etc, etc., the current system does not work.

Amy T.,
The average American believes that the wealthy are not paying their “fair share” of the tax burden. That belief is the result of the demonization of the wealthy by the liberal-leaning mainstream media, Liberal politicians and the extreme radical Left blogs. It is imperative to propagate class warfare to accomplish class envy by the masses, without which the Left could never get their socialist agenda passed.
Now let me put this into a different light. Would it be “fair” to charge a person making more than $250,000 an extra 50% for a loaf of bread? An extra 50% for a magazine? An extra 50% for a movie ticket? Would it be “fair” to have separate restaurant menues; one for those making less than $250,000 and one for those making more than $250,000; with the latter having to pay 50% more for the same entree?
That would punish those who have achieved financial success and encourage mediocrity. It would crush the entrepreneurial spirit–the American Dream–which has made America the great country that it is. Why make more than the threshold if you could actually live cheaper by maintaining a salary below the threshold? THAT would result in placing more of a tax burden on the middle class.

Interesting comments. I don’t think it’s a matter of BO vs. Bush, how many times Bush went to Camp David. They all go there–moot point. There will be disagreement depending upon your allegiance. I am resentful of BO’s spending the taxpayer’s money for his date. Many of us are now unemployed due to his actions–not Bush’s. Every president inherits–BO uses that as an excuse whenever he doesn’t want to accept responsibility. Points of view are going to be debated, mostly hotly. Our country as we march toward socialism has become very divided–GOP didn’t do that.

It’s going to be a tough sell convincing those same Americans that the wealthy weren’t as rich as it seemed, it was just the commies that control the major news networks trying to make it look that way, even though they bought record numbers of luxury items like vacation homes, yachts and private jets. They needed to be more discreet is all. Oprah felt so guilty about it she started giving away cars.

What I object to is that this particular “campaign promise” could not have coincided when the “dynamic duo” was already scheduled to be in town. Apparently, the idea of shared sacrifice is spared when it comes to our reigning king. Requiring the use of (albeit, a smaller version) Air Force One, a helicopter, transportation for his de rigueur entourage and salaries for a 600-count police detail in a cash-strapped city (has he heard that NYC is currently having its own fiscal crisis?)… reeks of his ARROGANT disregard for us mere mortals. Yet, he eloquently quips that he would have been happy to have taken the shuttle if he were allowed. Obviously — as has been demonstrated elsewhere — his myopic focus misses the collateral damage that follows his actions. Remember the auto execs use of private jets last November? IT’S ABOUT APPEARANCES!!!!!! And, btw, Mr. Obama, while I have your ear… I have good reason to be upset with your wasteful spending as NOT ONE DOLLAR of your stimulus billions have yet to help me. I’m ineligible for EVERYTHING!!! As an unemployed (prior to Sept. 2008) professional with a graduate business degree, I currently have to make do on a daily allowance of $3.00 for food so that I can TRY to keep a roof over my head in NYC. When do I get my retraining so I can get my stimulus job in 2010/11 (if I’m still alive) that you tout rebuilding bridges and/or repaving roads? Just what am I (and your other victims) supposed to do in the meantime?

Skip,
I’m not trying to convince anyone that the wealthy aren’t wealthy. It was the wealthy buying luxury items like vacation homes, yachts and private jets, spending in general that expanded our economy. It’s when the wealthy stopped their traveling and spending sprees that resulted in massive layoffs.
The irony is that President Obama’s and the Democrats’ condemnation of the extravagant spending by the bailed out companies actually encouraged non-bailed out companies to cut back on their extravagant lifestyles. And this at a time that what is greatly needed is lots of extravagant spending to help bring back many of the jobs that have been lost.

You complainers are going to complain no matter what he does. Hollyhock – I don’t agree that it was BO that caused your unemployment and not W – BO hasn’t been in office long enough for many of his policies to have that effect. If he hadn’t gone to NYC you people would find something else to criticize and I expect it will be that way for the next 8 years. The good news is that he keeps on working to make this country a better place and I think he will be successful – even though I expect he will make his mistakes along the way. It can’t be as bad as the last 8 years and at least he’s trying a vastly different approach.

A black president makes one personal trip almost 5 months after becoming president and the issue of taxpayer cost becomes headlines. Is he supposed to be a prisoner in D.C.? Racial prejudice is alive and well.

He PROMISED Michelle a Broadway show after the election. So far, this is the ONLY PROMISE he has kept.
Everyone reading this should look up PROLONGED DETENTION and Obama. He thinks people should be held indefinitely because they MIGHT commit a crime in the FUTURE! It is true! Up to 10 YEARS! What happened to innocent until proven guilty?
I wonder if he pondered this during intermission at the Broadway show.

Julia, I personally have not complained about President Obama’s date night to New York City. I understand that presidents do travel all the time. But see the real difference between President Clinton’s and President Bush’s traveling is THEY NEVER SAID: “You can’t get corporate jets. You can’t go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayer’s dime.”
President Obama actually CONDEMNED the bailed out companies for extravagant spending of taxpayers money and then he makes this trip to New York City. I would have much preferred that President Obama waited until he and Michelle actually had some kind of business–even if it was a fundraiser–in New York City.
Now then, there have been several comments about President Bush’s many trips/vacations to Crawford Ranch. You have to understand that no matter where the president is he is able to conduct the same business that he does in the White House. So even though President Bush may have been on the Ranch he still conducted his daily briefings, meetings and yes even conducted discussions with some world leaders.

Eva, of course it isn’t the only promise President Obama has kept. He also promised his daughters a dog, remember?

This man is Nigerian rich. He should be ashamed. To put out word that business meetings in Las Vegas are bad and then he and his woman go out for a night on the town on taxpayer money. Nigerian.

Everyone needs to calm down and let President Obama enjoy himself with his wife once in a while.
Personally, I am glad to see some glamor in the White House again and reminds me of the days of Kennedy and the lovely Jackie O.
If you wanted to boil this down to taxpayer dollars…everyone in the country paid 1/1,000,000 of a penny to offer an uplifting aspect to White House news and to show the world that even though we are in an economic downward spiral, our President can show his wife a good time once in a while.
Ladies, am I right?

Why did he apply for the job description of being a president – all he dose is whine about the past president. Could it be that he is completely clueless about being a working president?

President Obama can not control how he has to travel. We can not fault the man for taking his wife out to dinner and a show. Date nights are very important to loving, lasting marriage. Even the President has to have down time. Let’s give him a break. He has 8 years to prove himself!

Its not that he had a date, its what the date cost the taxpayer. Can I deduct this as entertainment on my taxes. I need the deductions and after all I DID PAY FOR IT.

What is wrong with this country? News flash: he won the election…like it or not he IS president. We need to support him. IT cost me less than a penny for him to take his wife to dinner. He has been working basically 24/7 for three years, he inherited a country that is in far worse shape than what he originally campaigned to win, and he has gotten more accomplished his first months in office than any other recent president. Bush, Clinton, the other Bush, Nixon, Ford and Carter all took trips at taxpayers expense and no one says squat about them. Hmmmm….because they are white maybe???? As a white woman in my 30′s, I was under the impression that we had made great strides against racism in this country since the days of my parents and grandparents. It makes me sick to have to realize that I have been wrong about that. Racism is alive and well unfortunately – and may be part of the real reason we are becoming so backwards and falling behind the rest of the world. Get over it! He had dinner with his wife. It cost you a penny. Bush costed you a hell of a lot more than that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The timing of this story is perfectly timed with the public company proxy season, where disclosures about corporate-jet use attract wide attention.

First an air-force one photo shoot over midtown Manhattan, and now a hundred-thousand dollar night on the town courtesy of the American tax-payer. Are we watching a VH1 reality show or something?

Coming on the heels of the GM crisis, this is like Nero fiddling while Rome burns. You know what is one of the biggest causes of marital strife? Fiscal worries.
This man is personally responsible for the auto workers losing their jobs under his GM buyout plan – what does he think the workers are going to do for date night now? Beg?

@ Jeff, get your head out and think about what ‘obama’ inherited as compared to what he has done in his first 6 months. From the frying pan to hell.

Sorry, Jeff, that last comment should have been to Sarah.

I just wish the Presidents when they make a campaign visit or a personal date pay the taxpayers for fuel. What is wrong with a Video conference like a virtual town hall meeting. He, especially Pres Obama says we have to sacrifice. Lets start at the top.

I am perplexed by the tone of this article. How are married couples maintaining their relationships if they aren’t making the time to be together without the children?
Going up to NY from DC for dinner and a Broadway show is hardly a fairy-tale event but “couple time” can also be dinner at a local restaurant. Good on Barack and Michelle for recognizing that their relationship requires regular nourishment!
