Palin Ties Miss California to Obama & Clinton
ABC News’ Teddy Davis reports: Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) issued a statement Wednesday ginning up conservatives — and creating discomfort for liberals — by pointing out that Miss California Carrie Prejean, President Barack Obama, and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are all avowed opponents of same-sex marriage. Palin confirms in her statement that she spoke by phone with Prejean "soon after the attacks started." Prejean has found herself in the middle of a firestorm ever since saying publicly that she lost the Miss USA competition for telling contest judge Perez Hilton, a proponent of same-sex marriage, that she believes marriage is between a man and a woman. The Alaska governor notes that she can relate to Prejean "as a liberal target" herself. Here is the full statement: "The liberal onslaught of malicious attacks against Carrie Prejean for expressing her opinion is despicable." "Carrie and I spoke soon after the attacks started; I can relate as a liberal target myself. What I find so remarkable is that these politically-motivated attacks fail to show that what Carrie and I believe is also what President Obama and Secretary Clinton believe – marriage is between a man and a woman." "I applaud Donald Trump for standing with Carrie during this time. And I respect Carrie for standing strong and staying true to herself, and for not letting those who disagree with her deny her protection under the nation’s First Amendment Rights." "Our Constitution protects us all – not just those who agree with the far left." "Governor Sarah Palin"

LOL.. and this is news.
Palin will do anything to get back in the spotlight.
And like she really writes her own comments.
I hope Palin runs in 2012, then its guaranteed the Reps will lose again.
Palin, the gift that keeps on giving.
But wait.. I need the reciept.. I don’t like it and want to return it. I think I will exchange her for a bridge to nowhere.

This is EXACTLY NOT breaking news Mrs. Palin …
WE ALL knew this and the Donald and his queen were very adamant in their reminding us of this very fact yesterday in their faux press conference …
I WILL reiterate HOWEVER that the President of the USA has YET to campaign AGAINST Gay Marriage which is exactly what dipsticks like Palin and the queen have been doing …
Posted by: Blogger | May 14, 2009, 12:14 am 12:14 am
She didn’t post this on her twitter page why?
Blogger you make no sense whatsoever. Obama clearly stated that he thought marriage should be between a man and a woman, so therefore that in itself is a statement against gay marriage.
Let’s say I stated that every store clerk shouldn’t ask for an id when anyone purchases alcoholic beverages,
Now, Why would I go out and campaign for guidelines that would mandate a store clerk to ask for ids?

Anyone who dares offer an opinion at odds with the politcally correct thought police find themselves under attack from the far left loons, whether they are TEA Party participants, Miss CA, or Sarah Palin. The loons have even decided that returning war veterans should be singled out as potential “right wing extremists.” Essentially, what the far left has decided is that their real enemies are other Americans.

This entire episode includes lessons for all sides. First, Palin and Prejean are both failing to recognize that their views are considered hurtful and offensive by a large percentage of the population. I didn’t say a majority, so don’t read into that, but certainly enough people to make this an issue, and they don’t all live in San Fransisco. Don’t miss the lesson with a knee jerk “but I’m an average American, and everyone is like me” response.
But the point is that the comments, while protected by free speech, are hurtful. A beauty pageant contestant is supposed to say “I want world peace,” not sow discord and express what is considered by many to be a bigoted and hateful position.
At the same time, gay marriage proponents have to remember that they the pendulum has not suddenly swung the other way just because there is a Democrat in the White House. This is still a divisive issue within the United States. People need to be convinced that their position is right, not forced into accepting it or told to shut up.
Lastly, everyone has to remember that free speech is still a major building block of this nation. You simply can’t say that other people have to shut up because you don’t agree with them. We need more debate, not less, and more reasoned thinking with less vitriol.

Greg- I’m pretty sure it was the conservatives who said Dems were “unAmerican” and not the other way around. No one said the returning veterans were extremists. However it has been PROVEN that the crazy far right domestic terrorist organizations (think McVeigh) do try to recruit people with military experience. Also, many of those same organizations send their members into the military. It’s a very small percentage, but it can’t be ignored because we don’t want to hurt some overly sensitive conservative. As far as Prajeen is concerned, as a liberal who DOES believe in the right for same sex couples to be recognized by the government (however, not the church), I applaud Prajeen for standing up for her beliefs even though she knew she would lose the crown. Perez Hilton and THOSE guys went after her. Most liberals can respect a difference of opinion. We don’t respect ignorance and name calling however.

As the taxes we Americans are going to pay keeps building, It’s looking more and more like the dems will be out, again. The voters knee jerk reaction to the economic downturn, was to follow the mainstream media, and blame Bush and the repubs. The attacks Palin had to deal with before, will pale in comparision to what the mainstream media will unleash if she runs again.

Gov Palin is really scrambling to try to stay in the spotlight…even by promoting lies. Secretary Clinton and President Obama believe marriage is between a man and woman; however, they are not trying to push their beliefs on all Americans. They have not campaigned against same-sex marriage and in fact have promoted equality for all Americans, something that Palin and the “new” Republican Party have a hard time doing. Palin, Limbaugh, Cheney, McConnell, and the others are the best thing that could happen to America, because they expose to the world the true meaning of bigotry, moral vacuum, and challenged ethics.

Oh, President Obama closing car dealerships? Oh well…..this is crazy. But anyway, on the topic of Palin, the uneducated, loose dumb one from Alaska never gives up the opportunity to ride on someone else’s coattails on a topic. This woman is sad and sick. Who cares what your beliefs are on same sex marriages…..and since when has God died and left you the baton? Human Rights are a God given right, and it has nothing to do with how you prefer your ‘sex’. Just another “hate” issue for the Republicans, they always has to have something to be angry with. Except it’s misplaced anger.

Who in the world is advising our BabyDoll? This is so transparent that you can walk through it. She SPOKE with Prejean???? …and actually issues a Press Release? Once again, it just shows her poor judgement and sensibility of recognizing what is or isn’t important. (and yes, I know what her point is but she is off base here) I don’t think she realizes how this makes her look and confirms her more of a nut than people had imagined. It is not the liberal whatever that is “killing” her. Its her sheer stupidity. Maybe, if ahe kept her mouth closed she would have a better chance of advancing herself.

Why did’t Obama inherit a paradise? Pubs had control of our government for years. What did they do with it? Why does gay marriage offend people? I fail to see what that has to do with other peoples’ marriages. Personally, I think we should have civil unions for every body and let people be “married” in their own religions if they wish. Also who cares what a beauty queen thinks?
Posted by: cregis | May 14, 2009, 9:13 am 9:13 am
The majority of marriages ARE between a man and a woman…that won’t change. It’s the right to marry for gay couples that is being attacked. Straights loose NOTHING, and gays finally have the legal right to marry who they love. What’s the problem?

Some say that her remarks are regarded by a large portions of the population as hurtful…well it cuts both ways most of us on the other side of the issue view the comments and the intrsuion of the words marriage and gay together as hurtful as well. Marraige has been a religous instituion for thousands of years, long before it represented tax code and legal statuses. A civil Union provides the exact same thing to a gay couple that marraige does to a straight couple. Since recorded time Marraige has been between a man and a woman…who do you side with the Rainbow troopers or thousands of years of human history.

Seriously? This is what Palin is glomming onto now? Well, she is certainly taking on the right’s mantra of “poor, poor us” by AGAIN trying to be the victim.
So, she too is pulling out the freedom of speech issue? As a politician, she should KNOW that this right is to protect people from the GOVERNMENT….not other people who ALSO have the right to free speech.
These two ditz’ are made for each other.

I find it hard to understand why Miss Prejean is being prosecuted for having an opinion about gay marriage when Perez Hilton is being praised for trapping her to further his own personal agenda and political beliefs.
Posted by: JJHert | May 14, 2009, 9:37 am 9:37 am
Well, in my opinion the beauty queen was unfairly harrassed. Her opinion is just that–her opinion. To look for “the dirt” on her was unfair and slimy, BUT…this has all worked in her favor! This incident brought her more publicity than she could have hoped for. Prejean should be thanking Jesus!!!! …Hello? What is the name of Miss. America? Ya know…the winner??? So, you get my point.
However, for BabyDoll to try and ride this girls coat tails, and then place herself in the same league as President Obama and Hillary Clinton, AND THEN to assert that this is a liberal conspiracy against her is truly laughable. I just cannot tell you all the joyful entertainment this woman gives me each morning. I don’t recall ever being so fascinated! I am indeed a groupie!!! I email her quotes to friends and colleagues; talk about her over dinner; google her name daily; …She is indeed special in my book! LOL!!!! WHAT “gets” me is: …Never does it crosses HoneyCakes mind that she is a target due to HER lack of in intellect and
her juvenile strategic moves to keep her name in the papers.

Please get past her looks and beauty queen body and look beneath the surface. Kim. I believe in God. Let me explain. I felt the girl got shafted by the question and the idiot Perez. However, she does look rather hypocritical right now. She LIED on a dang application AND I’ve now seen topless photo’s of her. As a Christian I have been taught a sin is a sin. You can not tell me God doesn’t frown EQUALLY on lying and topless sexual photos. So the girl does now need to shut up as she blew it due to what she has done.

Palin is who I voted for in this last election. She is intelligent, attractive, and has made all of her success on her own, without the support of the media (she’s basically the opposite of liberal women in power)…
She didn’t ride her husband’s coat tails, while he stuck his cigar in everything within a 5 ft radius (hillary clinton). She didn’t marry a mulitmillionaire businessmen who paid for her political campaigns (pelosi).
No, Palin made her own success. But that is one fact that you will mever hear the far-left media mention.

Katie Couric is a washed up woman who was trying for a come-back and fell right in with the vicious left–the smears and lies were unprecedented–even worse than the MSM and leftist attacks on Hilary Clinton during the primaries. And Palin is tougher for having gone through it. She is definitely ready for the personal attacks this time. Fasten your seatbelts, libs–you are going to have a bumpy ride.

Several points:
1) Mr. Hilton’s question was highly inappropriate to the setting. This is a beauty pagent not a political stumping post.
2) In the context of such a contest the qustion should have had no right or wrong answer in any case.
3) Mr.Trump was correct to have blown off all the media hoopla and let her keep her crown.
4) Ms. Pslin has nothing to do with this, so why she is thrusting herself upon us again? Has she not yet realized her own political irrelevance yet?

This whole overblown story is such a farce. Probably put out there by The Donald so he can get on TV and talk about himself and puff up his ego. Miss California isn’t being scrutinized because of her beliefs, which she has every right to voice, she’s under fire for lying. She lied about the photos and then blamed her choices on the photographer and the wind. Topless is topless. And it’s against the rules of the pageant. I find it so ironic that she claims to be such a good Christian, while posing semi-nude and then lying about why she did it. When you question others morals, you should be prepared to answer for your own.Hillary Clinton is for same sex marriage. That’s why many in the gay community supported her.But comparing a run for the presidency and a beauty pageant is so far fetched and laughable. That’s like comparing Donald Trump’s decision to allow her to keep her title, to every voter in the US. One dosen’t have anything to do with the other.

Fed-Up you are clearly contradicting what you said, we all mess up, if we were to all go back and pull out the things that we did at 17, 18, 19 and 20 and base that on whether or not we are walking the walk today,no one would believe that we are christian, it is two different issues. I never said that it was not a sin, but when do you start carving out sin, lie, steal, cheat, murder all the same all equal, however, our sins does not take away our right to believe, to have an opinion or to move on with our lives and try to strive to be the best. She was attacked, she was made out to be a bigot and she decided to stand up for herself. If I were to be attacked and I stand up for my self and people decide to go back to my teenage years or my twenties and pull out something that I did back then on me, that still does not take away my conviction or the fact that I have the righ to defend myself when attacked. If we were to go down that road none of us would ever get anywhere.

And, while I’m here…
I would love to see a true beauty contest, one with little or no make-up, one without breast implants, etc… I’ve always thought it funny that participants in a “beauty contest” have to apply massive amounts of make-up to be beautiful. No offense intended to Ms. California.

They are so full of themselves that they can’t understand why people are tired of the Rush’s and Chenney’s of the world. The major defeat speaks volumes. Palin lost because fo her own doing. If they ever want to get past that stigma and become a viable party again, they need to tell her to zip it and go back to Alaska, where she never should have been dragged out of in the first place. If the GOP does not distance themselves from this kind of embarassing idiot, they will not have any shot in the 2010 elections either.

Hilton, or whoever he is, started the bashing and thought he would get a pass by the media. Unfortunately, Trump “trumps” any media and chose to back what was right–after all, “this is 2009 and nude photos are everywhere.” Trump is the only person who is bigger than the media–and that includes Obama, as we are starting to see. This charge that the “left” is attacking Miss California or Governor Palin just because of their views is a big lie. These two women are being attacked because they are hypocrites. They promote their religious views and portray themselves to be these holier than thou moral role models who should decide what is right and wrong for the rest of society. Miss California claims that marriage should only be between a man and a woman based on moral and religious reasons. Then, we find out that she posed nude or semi-nude for photos. This is hypocrisy, pure and simple. She’s just being called out on it.

You people are the ones that are bigots and close minded, do you assume that every beauty contestant is a dits, do you know anything about this young lady that would justify your comments, you just make assumptions about others. As far as Palin is concerned like I said during the elections and I will continue to say eventhough I am a liberal. I did take the time to go and research her and her background and she is a very intelligent woman. I may not agree with some of her views, but we do live in America and that is acceptable, but she is a young woman who has made great strides and as a woman and an African American. I know that whammy that we face, in my case a double whammy, people just assume that if you are beautiful you cannot be intelligent, well news flash you can be both. Sarah Pailin’s politics may not be mine, but I will not belittle her accomplishments, nor her as a person, she has stood by her convictions and she has managed to do something that most PHD’s and MBA’s have not been able to do. If people had bypassed the media and go and do the research on their own, they would have seen that this woman is a strong self made woman who made her way to the Governors office through hard work and good policies that worked for her state and that continues to work for her state, whether it’s a state of 600,000 or a town of 5,000 people still need good representation and the people of Alaska have that from Sarah Palin and I continue to applaud her. I choose not to let my politics blind me. I judge people individually not by their political party.

I have seen more hate, disrespect, fear, closed mindedness, and name calling from the right than from any other place, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’reily and friends attack anyone who disagree’s with them constantly.
Just because someone doesn’t have the same beliefs and ideas as you doesn’t make them unpatriotic!! In fact to find a REAL patriot in any party on any side is difficult, if you think Palin, Rush, and all the other extremists on EITHER SIDE are true patriots then I feel sorry for you.. A REAL patriot puts COUNTRY BEFORE PARTY, and that is something I haven’t seen in a long time, none of these people do that, just because they say they do doesn’t make it true, they are all about power, control and money. The country is falling apart because no one cares about it and all they care about is their party, about being right, and their opinions matter and no one elses do!!!

Dear Mr. Teddy Davis:
With all respect good sir:
Stir up all the dumbness and supidity that you might in your reporting– still there is nothing that Sara Palin can possibly say that could “cause discomfort” to liberals.
She is consigned to the garbage dump of vapid political vacuity. America is bigger than she and her fellow social conservatives will ever acknowledge.
This great country will never backslide to where she would like to bring us.
Let her family enjoy its book deals and its illegitimate children.
I just want her to leave the rest of us ALONE. PLLEASSE !!!

Our economy is in trouble, there is a war, the ins., car and bank industries are in big trouble caused by greed and fraud and this is what we are worried about? that two people of the same sex want to get married?
Keep it up Sarah….you are insuring that the Republicans will never be voted in again….this is exactly where their minds are instead of on the things that are important…did nothing about healthcare or the economy while they were in office but this is of major importance! who cares if two people of the same sex get married…they are not hurting anyone…
but the banks and Wall Street, that’s ok if they hurt the entire country!

It’s not really about gay marriage, it’s the fact that she lied. You sign saying you haven’t exposed yourself in that fashion.. Then someone comes up with the photo’s and oops, it’s the gay guy fault! Hypocrites… so typical for the G.O.P. folks. The loudest mouth on these issues are the guilty ones, almost every time! Yes, Mr. Hilton asked an inappropriate question for a bimbo pagent, but it’s the fact that she lied. Oh well, new material for the next Jerry Springer show…hosted by Sarah Palin…

iamwomaninMI: You are absolutely correct!!! If the Republican Party (or rather the “new” republican party as they want to be known as), were to come out and just disavow BabyDoll, they actually might have people pay more attention to them. I will speak for myself–I like Eric Cantor and I was interested in listening to this “New America” whatever its called thingy he was/is leading. I liked him, Jeb Bush, and even Mitt Romney having their listening tours. I made a conscious note to learn more about this initiative…then, Jindal joined this movemnt and quite frankly, this raised an eyebrow. Then, BabyDoll joined this movement–it was all over for me!!! Same shtick, same people, different name….. why bother?

People keep saying nudity is a sin. I think the sin is not putting Gods greatest achievements out in the open.

I find it hard to understand why Miss Prejean is being prosecuted for having an opinion about gay marriage when Perez Hilton is being praised for trapping her to further his own personal agenda and political beliefs. Isn’t that what this is all about in the first place? Palin is an idiot trying in vain to stay in the spotlight no matter what it takes. To you liberals claiming this is not about her view against gay marriage you are completely wrong. Again from my earlier comment, if this was about pictures taken then there would be just as big of a fuss about the ones taken of Ms Rhode Island but oddly enough nobody is talking about those. Here’s another difference, the pictures taken of Ms Rhode Island were published in Maxim and nobody cared the ones of Ms Cali from my understanding were never published.
If this is about pictures then why did MSNBC talk once again to Hilton about her views on gay marriage?
Why did CBS ask her about her views of gay marriage?
simple because it’s NOT about the pictures.

If anyone loves the media it is Obama–he is forced on us more than any Pres in history–even the media are complaining about his prime-time diatribes causing them to lose money. Perhaps he should give up some of his and his family’s air time so we can hear another point of view for a “change”.

DCC
“Open minded” liberals launch some of the most viscous attacks on those with whom they disagree. That is a fact, plain and simple.
The media’s treatment of Palin was disgusting and their fawning attitude towards barry O was shocking.
The nutty liberal media actually gave credence to Palin’s baby not being hers and treated it as a legitimate news story!
They did this while allowing barry’s comments of “I had no idea bill ayers did those awful things” and “I had no idea rev wright was saying those things” to go unchallenged.
The media picked a target to destroy, which was Palin, and they did. They were viscous beyond words, just as they have been towards miss california.
Liberals are all about free speech until you say something they don’t agree with.

Why do same-sex couples feel that they are somehow superior to threesomes, foursomes, and fivesomes? Is there anything magic about the number two?
The superiority of one-man, one-woman marriage is that it is the best way to produce the next generation, and guide it into adulthood.
The definition of “tolerance” is to civilly and respectfully address someone with whom you DISAGREE. I don’t see Miss Prejean and Gov. Palin receiving much tolerance, but I do see them acting in a tolerant manner.

She worked hard, accomplished a great deal in her life–more than the pres–she is a model for women everywhere, was raised by an ordinary family, was never handed anything, and has good values..what am I missing? I suspect it is because she was the biggest threat to Obama than any other politician.

I don’t watch beauty contests on TV so I missed out on the first hand telling of this tale. But I think any women who goes out in public to get a title of Miss Anything is just asking to be pulled thru a knothole backwards. You get half naked and walk out on stag in 4 inch heals and ask us to take you as a serious smart educated person, NOT. Ms Palin is proof of this theory a lot of people do not take her for anything but a bimbo and for the most part I think she likes that, until the remarks cut to close to the bone, then it’s all our fault, or the liberal media!I am a women and these types of women make me nuts. Posted by: sifto77 | May 14, 2009, 11:20 am 11:20 am
Since when does someone not have a right to express their opinion – especially when a question is put to them – simply because they did something wrong in their past?
Suppose someone once stole a loaf of bread because they were hungry, and years later were asked whether or not they believed in the principle of private ownership. Are they not allowed to voice support for private ownership, simply because of their past disrespect to it?
If someone made nude pictures – even if they made huge profits from nude pictures – that does not mean they have no right to later express opinions that certain sexual practices are wrong.
After all, some people have learned by experience that some practices are personally damaging, and not merely imaginative forms of free sexual expression.
Past actions do not necessarily make present opinions to be hypocritical.
It does seem hypocritical, however, that anyone who espouses tolerance is so intolerant of a dissenting opinion.

Johnnie – Palin is not “hated by the libs”. SHES LAUGHED AT BY THE LIBS. Sarah Palin was the best thing that could have happened to the McCain campaign FOR THE LIBS. She was forced on John McCain because she was 1) religious and 2) a woman. The GOP wrongly thought they could “appeal” to their base with religion and exploit Hillary Clinton’s loss with the Democrats at the same time. Sarah Palin was a political stunt and nothing more. She proved to be an unqualified hypocrite that was a distraction on McCain’s message. Sarah Palin is no more qualified to be President than Joe the Plumber (another political stunt). It seems that’s all the GOP has in their quiver these days. They for some reason believe that Americans are so gullible that they will fall for gimmicks, stunts, unsubstantiated innuendoes and flat out lies. Americans are smarter than the current GOP leadership think they are and until the GOP comes up with some REAL ideas to resolve the challenges that our country faces they will continue to be laughed at by the “Libs”.

notanobamafan, Yes we know it is trickle down economics that Bush left. Bush gave the rich a free ride and they did not trickle. He allowed outsourcing jobs to other countries with no draw backs to the companies doing this, so no jobs here if they can use cheap labor and pay no import fees, pay no health care fee’s or taxes. So no jobs here means people are not buying they don’t have the money, people not buying means factories reduce staff or shut down hence Layoffs. He also let the ball drop on the financial side, by not paying attention. He let the fat cats (CEO, CFO, COO’s) get fatter while the people doing the work received pay cuts and reduced hours as thier interest rates rise as well as food and gas prices. He started a war in a country that did not attack America, but failed to give our service personnel a raise so they can keep thier homes and provide for thier families here when they are away. He gave his buddy Cheney’s Haliburton no bid contracts so no other company could keep thier employees working but Haliburton is raking in billions and thier spin off KBR did such a shoddy job some of our military personal were killed by faulty inspections KBR should have been doing. Spends ton’s of money to help out after the hurricane, but the money and supplies never made it to the people who needed it. Oh yes blame someone else that has had the job since Jan 20th 2009 and this is what May 14, 2009.

However, the Bamster was a slacker for the first 35 years of his life and is well qualified to be President because he can read a telepromter? Palin is not my first pick in 2012 but B. Get used to the fact Same-Sex Marriage is the new reality no matter what religious prejudices and biases some of the American religionists may have.
Bottom Line: Equal Rights for Gays trumps the religious biases and prejudices that attempt to abridge those Rights.
Religious Freedoms are in no way abridged by not allowing religionists to inflict their acquaint and folksy religious biases, prejudices, and bigotry on others.

O-kay, she isn’t pro-choice (not my opinion but I get the support), she disagrees with teaching comprehensive sex education (not my opinion but I get the support) She is motivated and ambitious (That I will agree with! I would not want to meet-up with her in a back-alley. It’s clear that BabyDoll can fight!)
BUT….
She has proven over and over and over again on numerous ocassions of how mis-ill-uninformed she is. GOD BLESS AMERICA INDEED that gives such a person the opportunity to reach the level that she has!!! What a WONDERFUL country we live in!!!
To think that one “thinks” that they have satisfactory foreign policy experience because one’s state is geographically situated near Russia is hysterical!!! Never mind having not gone there, dealt with any representatives, or negotiated any type of deal whatsoever, etc. Heck! … I can see the moon from my backyard…therefore, I’m an astronaut?
Her comments yesterday regarding her book deal had me in fits of laughter! “I can now put that journalism degree to work…” ???? Like…where was the use of that degree when composing legislation, doing interviews et alia.
…and she says this all with a straight face…
PRICELESS!!!! JUST PRICELESS!!!!

Its all to make people more reliant on government. This BOZO also want to tell private companies what they can pay. CAN YOU SAY TYRANNY!

It is quite clear that much of the pageant controversy has hinged on the difficult question asked about gay marriage. In all of the ongoing debate, how many people have actually read up on the real history of marriage tradition? In the thousands of years of its existence, the meaning of what a marriage is has changed drastically. It was defined in many cultures, first and foremost, and often solely, as a financial contractual agreement with two people of the same class to perpetuate the species at times when the idea of health care did not really exist and infant mortality was extremely high. In our modern times, populating the world is certainly not a problem, which includes invitro fertilization. Forget any notions of romance in traditional marriage since coupling was pre-ordained by parents at a child’s birth. Also forget any rights for women since the husband had absolute and total control of his wife, including ‘marital rape’ (incidentally, if we are going to get technical about traditional marriage and go back in time, no women would be allowed to voice any of her own opinions, let alone vote, which would leave Ms. California and Mrs. Palin silent). Up until 40 years ago, interracial marriage was viewed as an abomination in God’s eyes and that view has changed for most. The list goes on and on. As for marriage being ordained by God, in the Catholic Church, as one example, this was not a concept formally adopted by the church until approximately the 16th century. Prior to this, marriage was looked at primarily as a legal contract. We always have choices in a society to forge ahead, stagnate, or move backwards. The trend in American society has been to move forward, thank God! So, for those women espousing that we all go back to ‘horse and carriage’ type societies, please note exactly what your ‘traditional marriage’ stance should really entail in terms of turning back the clock on all your own rights that were fervently fought. The equal and legal right of marrying a person of the same sex should not be denied in contemporary American society since it is an issue that is really about two people making a life commitment and wanting to protect what is rightfully theirs. Should not all married heterosexual people not defend the idea of commitment? Certainly, this is a notion that often seems to go on the wayside. In my native Canada, gay marriage was accepted as a federal law five years ago and society did not disintegrate. Canadians pride themselves on being an ‘avant-garde’ society. This is a concept that used to exist in abundance in the United States, but one that also has gone on the wayside.

Good for Palin. I’m glad someone is standing up and defending Prejean. And like it or not, Palin is right. Palin, Prejean, Biden and Obama are all on the same page when it comes to same sex marriage. Of course, that could change. I predict Obama changing his position on the issue by next week.

They are really similar. Sarah’s daughter gets admiration and money for becoming pregnant (which they say is a wrong thing to do). Prejean gets admiration and money for posing nude (which they they is a wrong thing to do). That seems to be the new right wing Christian doctrine: you don’t sin, but we proudly do and use it to make more publicity and money.

Gerald – “Please….just implement Civil Unions in all states, and let’s move on!”
Doesn’t solve anything Gerald and it’s still a violation of the US Constitution. The Supreme Court weighed in on the “Separate But Equal” argument long ago. Separate is never Equal.
So long as states are in the marriage business and legal protections extend from it any state denying same sex marriage is factually in violation of the US Constitution.
There are 3 solutions…
1. States get out of the marriage business and everyone gets a Civil Union.
2. Eliminate all legal protections associated with marriage, i.e. inheritance, parental rights, Spousal veterans benefits, Social Security benefits… etc.
3. Stop opposing same sex marriage.
Posted by: morethanpolite | May 14, 2009, 1:14 pm 1:14 pm
Why should two people making a commitment be preferable to five people making the same commitment?
Same-sex “marriage” has no moral basis, no constitutional basis, and provides no real benefit to any portion of the human race.
One may try to assert that certain societal directions, such as same-sex “marriage”, pre-birth infanticide, and confiscatory wealth distribution, are “forward” – but those directions are actually “backward” from a human rights standpoint. One may call them “progressive”, but they are “regressive”. One may call them “liberal” but they are often obtained by methods that are “churlish”.
One may have the freedom to do what he wishes within certain limits in regard to the freedoms of others; he does not have the freedom to compel others to bestow honor on his action.

MKS – “…no constitutional basis.”
Factually incorrect.
1. The Supreme Court has already set precedent that marriage and choosing who one marries is a fundamental civil right protected by the 14th amendment.
2. The 14th amendment requires a state to extend legal protects to all and they are strictly forbidden from making laws or amending their state constitutions in violation of the 14th amendment.
3. At least 1400 legal benefits extend from the one legal contract states call “marriage”.
I’ve already listed the only 3 options states have and the only one that is likely to be taken is “stop opposing same sex marriage”.
Posted by: morethanpolite | May 14, 2009, 1:50 pm 1:50 pm
MKS – “he does not have the freedom to compel others to bestow honor on his action.”
Nonsense argument. The decision to invalidate laws preventing interracial marriage did not “compel others to bestow honor” on any action. It simply recognized marriage and deciding who one can marry as a basic civil right that no state can oppose. As usual no one can find a single legal argument against same sex marriage – because there isn’t one.

Gerald – “Please explain the “legal” difference between a Marriage, and a Civil Union since you seem to have all the answers.”
As I’ve stated before there are at least 1400 legal protections written into state and federal laws which tie those protections to “marriage”. Marriage by the way being a legal term the states have chosen to apply to a legal contract.
Civil Unions are included in almost none of these legal protections. A couple would need hundreds of contracts to come close to the protections that states extend through a single contract. This places an exceptionally undue burden on a couple to attain the same protections.
All states have reciprocity as far as “marriage” contracts but do not necessarily recognize another states Civil Union contract. This means that a couple under a civil Union would likely have to get numerous contracts in some states and Civil Unions. Another exceptionally undue burden.
But what this boils down to is the equal protection guaranteed by the 14th amendment. As long as the states and federal government extend legal protections in a contract they must extend it to anyone unless they can not present a Constitutionally legal reason not to. The burden rests on the state to present a reason why same sex couples should not have those protections. So far not one reason has been presented by any state.
It actually scares me that any US citizen would not recognize a clear violation of the US Constitution. I would explain about how legally invalid the “separate but equal” aspect of your question but you shouldn’t be a US citizen if you don’t know how bankrupt the “separate but equal” argument is.
Posted by: morethanpolite | May 14, 2009, 3:45 pm 3:45 pm
A minor correction to my wording…
As long as the states and federal government extend legal protections in a contract they must extend it to anyone unless they ‘CAN’ present a Constitutionally legal reason not to.
The burden rests on the state to present a reason why same sex couples should not have those protections. So far not one reason has been presented by any state.

63Tango, you are right on the money. Not that many people, including myself, think gay marriage is a top priority issue one way or the other. The huge wave of disgust stems from the fact that this is no more than a big publicity stunt designed to make Trump and Miss California a lot of money, and most people can see that. The sad thing is, they are once again successfully switching the public topic from issues that actually have relevance and urgency to a divisive, going-nowhere issue of relatively little impact to the lives of most Americans. I do not think we should be wasting our breath on these same old narrow-impact ideological arguments when there are real, pressing problems that we all share and most agree need to be dealt with, such as our economic future, the future of our planet, and our broken health care system.

Palin and the far right seek to Talibanize the GOP and country into accepting their religious views as matters of state. Talibanization, nor elevating a supreme council of christian elders is how our constitution funcitons.
Until the GOP can purge their own party of these extremists, they have to have something to get news coverage.

“Marriage” should be removed from all government related documentation and certify civil unions for anyone committing their life legally to one another. “Marriage” can be saved for the church if desired. The “sanctity” of marriage is a joke. If not, why isn’t divorce illegal? Same, difference. We should at least value equal rights in this country, regardless of race, sex, financial status or sexual orientation. This is why this issue, along with education and healthcare, needs to be seriously addressed and overhauled.

I’m not a Palin basher, but I’m surprised to see that a governor doesn’t understand the 1st Amendment’s protections of speech.
The constitution only protects you from the government. People can call you whatever names they like, and attack you verbally, and make you pay for the things you say (as long as they don’t break a law to do it). All that is fine. But, if it is the government that comes after you, then your 1st Amendmenmt rights are violated.

Posted by: Todd Ward | May 14, 2009, 10:21 pm 10:21 pm
Do the people who write the headlines for these stories ever actually read the article?
The article stated that Gov. Palin agrees with Carrie Prejean, President Obama and Sec. Clinton. She said all four of them agree that marriage is between a man and a woman. The headline makes it sound like Gov. Palin is accusing the President and Sec. Clinton of being associated with Prejean (or perhaps the other way around). As far as we can tell, they never met. They are just in agreement regarding one subject.
I respectfully suggest that whoever writes the headline might want to consider reading the article once in a while.

As much as they’ve tried, though, they haven’t brought her down yet and they haven’t broke her spirit. She is still standing and she hasn’t gone into hiding, as some would like her to do. DM not if the GOP continue to spout hate, and do not come up with new Ideals that really work and apeal to the American people and not some empty folder, like they did at a news conference a little while ago.

I am glad I read this. I needed a good laugh to end an otherwise boring day. Palin is just the gift that keeps on giving…. evidently no one at the rnc has figured out how to shut her up yet. The rumor about no leadership must therefore be true. What a three ring circus!

to-weird: The GOP is not the one spouting hate. If you would really take the time to read these comment boards you would see who is spouting hate and who is not!

Reading the headline of this story leaves a totally different impression than the article itself. One would have to wonder if the person writing the headline ever actually read the article.

Funny, this was never about her views on same sex marriage. The reason she almost lost her crown is SHE LIED! Plain and simple. She said there were no nude pictures, then she said that was the only one, and every day more surface!

DM, Oh really, you mean those highly televised Campaign rallies, no one was being hateful? Palin did not stop the crowd when they shouted out kill him, and that was just at one stop, now John McCain did stop that one lady that said Obama was a terrorist because of his middle name. But we all know the good cop verses the bad cop routine.

The dethroned beauty spoke to Extra and revealed that, in light of Trump’s recent decision to let Prejean keep her crown, she was considering her legal options against the pageant. The fact that both posed for pictures that violated clauses of her contracts and only she (Rees) got the boot clearly shows that double standards are in place, the former Miss Nevada says. Moreover, since Miss USA Tara Conner herself violated the rules by doing drugs and she wasn’t dethroned either, Reed knows for a fact she stands to win a case in court, should she decide to file an action against the pageant.
“An accurate word to describe me is irate.” Rees says, adding that regardless of what the stipulations are, the lack of a top in a picture still means someone is violating the contract, as was the case with several pictures Prejean took. “Prejean broke the contact… she should’ve had her crown taken away just like mine… for her crown not to be taken away is absolutely outrageous.” the dethroned beauty adds.
Furthermore, Rees argues, if anyone should have kept their crown, that person should have been her since the photos she took were personal, on her own time. “The fact is Carrie purposely posed nude for these pictures… I did not. I was a teenager who accidentally was out having a good time with her girlfriends and was unguarded. Tara Conner broke her contract for drug use… these girls get to keep their crown and I’m the one who’s exploited. I just wonder if Mr. Trump knows what he put me through – what I’ve gone through these past two years.” Rees says.

to weird: That crowd at that one rally was very loud and vicious and was very out of place, but they were just one group of people. Mean as they were, their number doesn’t even begin to compare with the hundreds, and maybe thousands, of people that have been spouting their hatred for Sarah Palin for the last eight months, and now for Carrie Prejean, on these comment boards!
Also I don’t recall Barack Obama rebuking his supporters very much for the for the hateful things that they’ve said about Sarah Palin either! He also knew about the smear campaign that the media ran on her too and did nothing about it!

those 8% that represents gay community is not a big number, so in order that the planet EARTH will be a nice place to live in, this 8% can be exterminated for the purpose of maintaining morality and world order. Follow the rule of GENGHIS KHAN at the time he united the Mongols and almost conquered half all of Central Asia. He said to himself, law and order must be enforced even he exterminate half of the mogul population. Just imagine, how can 8% gay community become so powerful that they can enforce their own beliefs to the majority of 82% who dislike gay marriage. Who we are supposed to follow? the gay beliefs or God’s commandments? they better be exterminated or else they are a sure danger to our world order.
