Pelosi on Firing Line: Democrats Voice Support; GOP Leaders Demand Retraction
ABC News’ Rick Klein and Dean Norland report: Leading House Democrats are lining up to defend House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in her widely publicized dispute with the CIA — while Republicans turn up the pressure on her to retract her accusation that intelligence officials lied to her.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, the No. 2 House Democrat, said today that Pelosi continues to enjoy “solid” support within the caucus. He voiced full support for her side of the story — attempting to put to rest suggestions of a split inside of Democratic leadership.
“I believe the speaker. I believe the speaker when she says that she was not specifically briefed on the types of — very polite term — enhanced interrogation techniques, that were being employed,” Hoyer, D-Md., told reporters at his weekly press briefing.
“Republicans are going to stay on it as long as you guys keep printing it, as long as it keeps to be a television item,” he added. “Not about the substance, but about the distraction. As long as you want to feed on it, the Republicans will continue to feed you. That’s the way it is.”
Meanwhile, House Minority Leader John Boehner is demanding that Pelosi either produce evidence that the CIA misled Congress about interrogation techniques, or retract her accusation.
“Accusing our intelligence professionals of lying to Congress is a very serious charge. If true, the speaker should produce evidence supporting her claim and turn it over to the Justice Department for potential prosecution,” Boehner, R-Ohio, writes in an op-ed for US News & World Report.
“If she is unwilling to do so, then she should retract her statement and apologize to the men and women who dedicate their lives to protecting our nation. It is as simple as that, and as of this writing, the ball remains squarely in the speaker’s court.”
Pelosi has been under fire since accusing the CIA of “misleading the Congress” by not telling her that waterboarding had taken place at a September 2002 briefing.
CIA officials maintain that she was informed. CIA Director Leon Panetta wrote a letter to agency employees Friday saying that “CIA officers briefed truthfully on the interrogation of Abu Zubaydah.”
Separately today, House Appropriations Chairman David Obey is claiming that the CIA made a different error in its report to Congress on briefings on harsh interrogation techniques.
Obey wrote a letter to Panetta saying that a September 2006 briefing did not include a staff member from the Appropriations Committee, notwithstanding the description of the briefing in the CIA’s report.
“In light of current controversy about CIA briefing practices, I was surprised to learn that the agency erroneously listed an appropriations staffer as being in a key briefing on September 19, 2006, when in fact he was not,” Obey, D-Wis., writes. “We request that you immediately correct this record.”
The Pelosi briefing in question occurred four years earlier, in September 2002. But Obey’s letter seems designed to call into question the CIA’s overall accuracy in the report prepared for Congress.
UPDATE: Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, is out with a particularly sharp statement, accusing the speaker of “actively undermining our national security,” and demanding that she provide proof that she was misled.
The statement:
“During the last session of Congress, Speaker Pelosi led Democrats in 45 different votes to unfund, underfund, undercut or undermine our troops in Iraq. Now she is accusing the CIA of lying.”
“Since taking the gavel, Speaker Pelosi has been actively undermining our national security. In the last Congress, Pelosi marshaled her caucus to undermine the work our troops are doing in Iraq. Our troops have since achieved a definable victory in spite of her actions. Now she has accused the CIA of committing a federal crime – lying to Congress. How can the CIA or any American defense or intelligence agency ever trust Nancy Pelosi with our national secrets, let alone our national security, again?”
“Pelosi’s claims warrant immediate action. The severity of Speaker Pelosi’s accusations leave no middle ground. The Speaker must immediately release to the American people the basis of her very severe accusations and call for the arrest and prosecution of the CIA officers, or our national security requires a new Speaker of the House.”

I couldn’t help but notice the discrepancy of a preceeding report that stated the Pelosi controversy was causing dissension among Democrats. It’s a transparent divide and conquer ploy of the GOP and an equally obvious systematic attack on a Democratic House speaker, both aided and abetted by some in the media. But then there’s a fresh air element to all of this that’s helping to increase the momentum towards a full scale torture investigation. So keep the shameless spinning going. It’s creating an inevitable call for getting to the bottom of something that stinks from the head down and to the very core.

Aren’t there classified records on the content of CIA briefings kept and to whom? That might clear up a lot of the “they lied to me” controversy.

Republicans are professionals of mirage. They always take the focus off the fact of their own practiced illegal activities, and place it on who said what. They’re decievers and surplanters…all! The focus needs to be, as Obama has said, on the real problems at hand. BUT, he must set in motion, investigations regarding the Bush Administrations illegal actions…and prosecute them!, NOT ignore them.

I couldn’t give two dog biscuits about who knew what or when!! Just prosecute WHOMEVER authorized and performed the torture…and be done with it. Why are people so worried about who lied to whom? Politicians have never been the most direct or honest people.

Pelosi has changed her story at least four or five times about whether she was briefed and what she was told. Exactly which story do Hoyer and the other democrats are support? Pelosi said the CIA lied. The burden of proof is on the accusor. She needs to be held accountable and provide that proof. Otherwise she needs to retract her statement. If she does neither, she should be forced to resign.

It seems that the real issues are not what is being discussed and those who are missing the point are in the majority. Yes She knew of the waterboarding but so did everyone else including the American citizens. We all knew, but consider that we had just been struck a death blow by these terrorist and America wanted revenge & safety.I praise her for wanting America to be safe. She should just admit that and get the glory that comes from doing a tough job. Now with the sherking & denials we could only assume one of two things. One, she is a lier and has no credibility, or two she is completely inept and didnt then or now know what the hell is going on.

I’m sure you have deep and sincere convictions about torture to be so concerned over Nancy Pelosi’s staying mum. But excuse me, she was being given classified security information at the time. Since when have current CIA briefings been public domain?
Posted by: kat | May 19, 2009, 2:06 pm 2:06 pm
According to the GOP,
first ‘there was no torture’
- when that didn’t hold much convincing value…
then the torture ‘was successful’, according to the former VP…
when that didn’t ‘sell’, we might say,
now it’s Nancy Pelosi’s fault that the Bush camp had people tortured.
The poor GOP. They just don’t have the marketing skills they used to.
I’d like to thank them for their untiring attention to the torture issues. Without the GOP, the criminal activity under the watch of the last administration would not have surfaced with such force.

Ignore the Republicans. They are irrelevant and don’t deserve a response.
Until Republicans can put the business of the American people ahead of their own petty, partisan, parochial, and provincial interests, they should shut up, sit down and let real Americans clear up their criminal mess.
Republicans have done more damage to the U.S. than the Islamic Terrorists could ever have done. “Heck of a Job, Republicans.” Republicans are enemies of the U.S. and are the best allies the terrorists ever had.
Once the “Republican Problem” is solved, maybe we can solve the other “Terrorist Problem.”

The fact that democrats are ranting and raving about how a terrist – who killed 3000 people might have been mistreated – instead of ranting and raving about the 100,000 people who were killed in a dirty bomb attack on los angeles proves that it was the right thing to do. If you want to live in an ultra liberal country – moved to california – or arizona where hundreds of people are tortured every year in the drug and human trafficking by illegals. Where is the dems outrage on that?

Seems a lot of misinformation was going around back then that no one ever was held accountable for. Weapons of mass deception, yellow cake, Iraqi hijackers, mission accomplished, etc. She will be held accountable at the ballot box like republicans.
Posted by: rightbehind | May 19, 2009, 3:03 pm 3:03 pm
Why is most of the bluster coming from the republicans from people that had no connection to the briefing or knowledge of what went on? This is just another attempt by the GOP to spin away from the real subject, you know, the people that ACTUALLY came up with using torture and the administration that AUTHORIZED using torture.

‘Torture,’ according to the United Nations Convention Against Torture, is: “any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him, or a third person, information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or a third person has committed or is suspected of having committed, or intimidating or coercing him or a third person, or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind, when such pain or suffering is inflicted by or at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence of a public official or other person acting in an official capacity. It does not include pain or suffering arising only from, inherent in, or incidental to, lawful sanctions.”
The man who went through the South, burning, killing, and spreading fear, during the Civil War, William Tecumseh Sherman, said:
“I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, more vengeance, more desolation. War is hell.”
Sherman was correct, “War is Hell.”
Looking back in time, I read where on…”February 14-15, 1945: Night indiscriminate bombing against the city of Dresden, Germany. 805 RAF bombers dropped fire bombs causing a huge Fire Hurricane. Between 35,000 and 135,000 civilians are estimated to be killed. Many people think this massacre was not justified due to the war situation (The German defeat was only a matter of days). No massacre is ever justified of course.”
“March 10, 1945: Tokyo is bombed by the Americans with fire bombs. 100,000 people were killed and 375,000 left homeless. This was one of many attacks to Japanese cities during 1945.”
August 6, 1945, Atom bomb falls, from an American aircraft, on Hiroshima, 140,000 Japanese civilians die. A few days later, on August 9, another Atom bomb falls on Nagasaki, 80,000 Japanese civilians die.
None of these campaigns, raids, operations, etc fall under the United Nations definition of torture; so, I suppose they were alright; more humane, kinder, more acceptable by the winning side; non-criminal and less torturous. After -all, these acts (bombing raids) were done by persons flying above the fray. Had the Allies lined-up 35,000 civilians on the streets of Dresden and shot them dead at close range, then the human outrage would have been deafening.
Point being: War is hell…” and “It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, more vengeance, more desolation.”

Pelosit has, and had then, enough power to put a stop to whatever interrogation techniques she believes is torture. She did not and has to insist she was not told about it to avoid any blame.
Now we’ll see if she gets away with her claim.

Nancy Pelosi is nervous about her job. That’s why she “doesn’t remember being briefed on waterboarding” and “the CIA lied” to her. If she admitted that she knew about the waterboarding and she voted to use those extreme measures to get information from those prisoners, then she would be no better than the former administration she so berates. Her political career could be in trouble. With that said, WHAT PART OF 9-11 DO YOU PEOPLE NOT REMEMBER? Is it the two planes smashing into the twin towers, the one plowing into the Pentagon, or the fireball in the countryside near Shanksville, Pennsylvania? Or maybe you don’t remember those poor souls jumping from WTC windows dozens of stories high? Or the people on the roofs of the WTCs and in the stairways as they collapsed? How about those people who died in the daycare centers, and the firefighters, and the police, remember them? Do you think those people weren’t tortured? 2,998 people DIED THAT DAY! Over 6,291 were INJURED! And what part of the USS COLE attack in 2000 do you not remember? Is it the 17 US sailors who LOST THEIR LIVES THAT DAY? How about the first WTC BOMBING in 1993, don’t you REMEMBER that? 6 people DIED and 1,042 WERE INJURED that day! And what about EUGENE ARMSTRONG, the American beheaded on video in IRAQ, DO YOU NOT REMEMBER HIM? Based on all of this, I do not care if Khalid Sheikh Mohammed or any of the other terrorist cockroaches at Gitmo are water-boarded? They are still alive…unlike the thousands of innocent people mentioned above. Personally, I have no problem sending them on to their virgins!

Just remember what you where doing on 911…remember how you felt shortly after…remember the news clips, the images…remember how you felt about the people who masterminded this attack…take the clock back to 2002…How can we protect our Country agianst further attacks?

THEY had the power ti investigate and did nothing in 2006. they promised to cut war funding to get their votes..they did nothing. by the way how long are gonna be in IRAQ? a true patriot would have spoken up but it appears to an independent voters eye she chose her politcal career over to the right thing if thats what she believed. perhaps you understand once caught in a lie you can no longer be trusted.

“Why in Hell are we arguing whether or not Pelosi is a hypocrite instead of arguing about all the laws that were broken by the Bush/Cheny administration ? IF WATERBOARDING IS NOT TORTURE AND ILLEGAL, THEN WHY IS IT RELEVANT/PERTINENT WHAT PELOSI KNEW ABOUT IT?
And why are we acting like the CIA has not lied to congress and the American people about the crimes they have committed before? The Republicans cannot come up with a single original idea about how to address the economy, global warming, health care reform, or the two current wars, but they are excellent with coming up with creative ways to distract the American people, and ESPECIALLY the Press, away from issues that really matter.
After the fiasco with the Bush administration, I thought we would be too smart to fall for this technique again but HERE WE GO AGAIN !!!!!!!

I find it quite fascinating that Republicans – most of whom actually BELIEVED in Saddam’s “WMDs”, “yellowcake” and nuclear/biological capabilities – still insist that the CIA could tell no lies or ever obscure the truth before a member of Congress.
I’m afraid most Republicans seem to fit into the general category of True Believers: people for whom the Truth Once Revealed (by Bush, Rove, Cheney, Limbaugh, the CIA, Boehner or whomever) is immutable and beyond the very reach of human scrutiny. For so many of them, what “is” simply “is” and cannot be questioned or tested at all. To the mind of these Republicans, Pelosi is – ipso facto – a liar and therefore not capable of truthfulness. That she is a liar is additionally “proved” because she is known to have lied – “known” because Republicans know that as a hated “Liberal” every statement she makes must be a “lie”: she speaks, therefore she is a liar. It has nothing whatever to do with evidence, the testimony of witnesses or the character of her accusers: it is simply Doctrine, firmly inscribed in the Republican Catechism of Political Truth and Conservative Faith.
And because it is a matter of True Faith, anything a Republican does in defense of that Faith is – in his own eyes and in the eyes of others like him – appropriate and right. Republicans will continually repeat known lies and untruths in support to their accusations: that is “okay” because the accusation is known to be “true” and therefore any effort to support it is also “true” even if falsified. Republicans will misrepresent themselves as “independents” or even as “Liberals” in order to offer their accusations in a “context” that seems less partisan: this is rationalized as “necessary” to “getting the truth out there”.
Republicans will insist that a matter is “true” despite all evidence to the contrary, or “false” despite compelling evidence that it is so. Whether the subject be Global Warming, pollution in general, Obama’s place of birth, a doctored photo of a hated “Liberal”, the legislative origins of the Internet or of the EPA Superfund, the legitimacy of a thrice-counted election vote… or whatever else has been promulgated as a “reason” that Republicans are right and “Liberals” are dishonest, unpatriotic, or have attained power unfairly… Republicans just seem to defend their True Beliefs despite any and all evidence presented to them. Evidence that does not suit their world view and support the True Doctrine of Conservatism is simply deemed “unreliable” or even “forged”.
The plain fact is, the GOP has been demonstrating for 30 or 40 years or more that it is the party of people who simply DON’T CARE what the evidence is: they choose to believe the most convenient LIES they can find to suit their view that they have superior revelation or that they are Truer Americans than others.
They sure are tiring. And they sure are irrelevant.

The LAST thing the Republicans want is an open investigation. Half of them would end up in federal prison if that happened. What harms national security are secret programs that take advantage of the secrecy system to abuse power and break laws, which is precisely what the CIA appears to have done under orders of the Bush Administration. I say OPEN THIS INVESTIGATION NOW.

dear larry – bottom line is you are sadly misinformed. Pick up a major newspaper- revealed over the weekend, one item suggests the extent the former VP was involved with organizing the [false] Iraq war. What isn’t out yet is whether the agenda served his needs, or his needs created the agenda. another item – the previous administration was briefed of al-queda attack threat to the U.S. one month before 9/11. Another revelation reports that Rumsfeld would feed the then president images of the [Iraq] war, titled with biblical references and lines, to keep him informed in familiar language.
Dirty, dirty sad stuff coming out.

You know I am getting fed up with all this childish ranting about torture. Unless you have been in combat, with your life on the line. Just shut up. When you are in harm’s way, you have to do what is necessary for the survival of the people you are with. I don’t agree with all of the moves any of the presidents have made lately. I certainly didn’t agree with Vietnam, where I lost a lot of friends. But once you call your shot as president, we, the ‘grunts’ or troopers have to respond. There is an ‘enemy’ out there that would love nothing better than to slaughter everyone of you for God. They will bomb schools, kill innocent civilians and try their best to get weapons of mass destruction into this country. They want you dead. They don’t want to ‘talk’ about it. They could care less how honorable you are and how many valufrated words you use. So go back to sipping you ice cold tea and flip to another channel and shut up. There is nothing more sickening than sidewalk politicans that are as niave as school children.

Nancy Pelosi is a joke, an embarrassment, a major distraction, and now an obvious liar. It’s very hard to take anything or anyone seriously when she is standing (or sitting) close by. It’s even worse when she speaks. I cannot believe her lies against the CIA – the very agency that keeps this country safe! She should apoligize and then step down as speaker of the house. Others have stepped down over much less.

Nancy Pelosi has made the accusations that the CIA lied to her – now the responsibility is hers to come forward with any and all evidence to support her claims.
Otherwise, she owes the CIA and the America public an apology, and immediately following, she should step down as Speaker of the House, and resign.

Full disclosure isn’t looking so great for the democrats either. Talk about hypocrites. When was the last time anyone knew of a politician telling us the truth? They all lie and, depending on your political conviction, we believe our own party. That’s why we’re in this mess! Get rid of all of them – the speaker and everyone else who has been in office more than 10 years. TERM LIMITS!!!

She wasn’t in charge, and the buck stops where? With Bush. She wasn’t even Speaker of the House then. She doesn’t owe anyone an apology. Bush and Cheney owe America one though and then some time in a prison for lying, starting a war for profit, and profitting from the lives of Americans killed for those lies. The torture of the people that the old administration deemed as their enemies does not surprise me. I feel they would torture anyone and everyone, including American citizens if they thought it would further their agenda of stomping out that piece of paper that many of us hold dear. The Constitution and our rights as Americans.

Oh yeah, like throwing 2 TRILLION DOLLARS down the Iraq ratthole – most of it borrowed from the Chinese – didn’t “undermine national security!!” Or like being asleep as a handfull of rich speculators were allowed to get even richer by making bets that nearly brought down the entire financial system didn’t “endanger national security!” These Republicans have earned every single steep drop in the polls. Dems keep forgetting the Clinton apologists who tried to justify his lying in court 3 times and denying the blue dress stain….oh yeah, that backfired too. Pretty obvious, she is doing a CYA to justify her position and just talked too much and cannot dig her self out now, so the dems will block the truth docs to cover her, but I do suspect it will be the last time they do it for her.

Mrs Pelosi is a dried-in-the-wool 60′s flower child who is very radically anti-war. If memory serves, she’s even vocally spoken about that.
The stereotypical anti-war zealot usually was not concerned with the nations security, and generally welcomed someone else coming in and assuming control. They had no clue about what government was or how things worked. They simply walked around with peace signs on the fingers, flowers in the hair and paisley clothing on looking as poor and “of the land” as they could, while rustling up as much cash as they could to buy pot. Usually signs were around; “Make love – Not war”. Thats all they lived for.
Boy do I see some similarities with this administration; especially on the democratic side of it. :-)

catman : Whether “most Americans” either believe or don’t believe that something is illegal does not alter IN ONE WHIT whether that thing is in fact legal or illegal. What is legal or illegal is what is written into LAW by the legislative process. That is called “Rule of Law”. The other is called “Rule of Majority Opinion” – which right now excludes Republicans, BTW.

Stephanie – what country have you been living in? You blame the Democrats for the mess we are in? Are you insane? The GOP and Bush’s policies brought this country down – not to mention the BUSH/CHENEY Admin destroying the U.S reputation abroad.
Also, you are ignorant to insist that Republicans are the only one’s that pay their taxes – it’s also unfair and bigoted for you to insinuate that anyone else who isn’t a “Republican” can’t pay their bills and are looking for a handout!
Keep in mind that the electorate and majority of Americans voted for a change in the direction that your party has brought upon our wonderful country. I’m sure you will reap the benefits when things change for the better! If not, get the hell out of the U.S. and go somewhere else if you think you have it so good! Very simple like the GOP is saying, put up or shut up. The Dems will voice support publicly to try and show unity. You know how it is. Basically a vote of confidence being shown by the Dems. Republicans are liars and (lately) big spenders. They are, however, tax cutters which produce bigger revenue for the gov.
Democrats are bigger liars and even bigger spenders and are flat-out anti-American (except for old-time blue dog Dems).
I doubt the DailyKos, Soros, Moveon.org, etc. are what the founders had in mind for leaders in our country.
Republicans are the lesser of the two evils.

WATERBOARDING WAS BEING POLITE TO THESE DEMONS THAT CAUSED THE DEATHS OF 3000 AMERICANS! ANYONE THAT SAYS WE TORTURED THESE GUYS SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES. IT IS A SMALL JUSTICE FOR THE 3000 AMERICANS THAT DIED ON 9/11. You’re so caught up in D’s versus R’s that you don’t realize you are defending these guys against a former President. So let me get this right. Pelosi is suppose to provide evidence about information she wasn’t given. STOP. The impetus is on the CIA to prove she was given the information. Remember, this happened during the same year the CIA is manufacturing lies about Iraq. This is the same CIA that stated they had FOUR meetings with Senator Bob Grahm. Grahm proved three of those meetings didn’t exist and the CIA pulled a mea culpa. NO. The CIA proved they will lie. To the GOP: you’re fools to yourselves. Bring out your Truth Commission. Unlike the GOP, the Democrats will soon give up on a politicians lies than give up on our principals. The GOP enshrines their liars.
Posted by: catmustea | May 19, 2009, 6:07 pm 6:07 pm
This is not a fight the Republicans want. We were ready to move on; the President asked us not to look back but forward. Then the GOP said Pelosi knew all along about water boarding–the same water boarding they don’t call torture and claim is effective at getting information. So if the Republicans are right, then Pelosi knew we were not torturing and getting good information, which makes her a hero. If the Republicans are wrong, then Pelosi may fall, but she will take down many Republicans, including Cheney and Bush. Are you sure you want to open this can of worms?

Now the Republicans want to blame all the national “credit card” debt run up by their hero, George Bush, on Democrats who were never consulted and never really benefited from the vaunted Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest 1/2 of 1%: they want US and OUR children to pay THEIR bills!! Another clever idea coming from Bush’s Washington: what OTHER “little” surprises did Bush and Cheney leave for us? I shudder to think! Oh, yeah, now let’s give Halliburton of Dubai another 100 million – and be sure to waterboard enough “people not like us” so that the ENTIRE world hates our guts and wants to blow us off the map!! That will make us REALLY “secure”!!! The Republicans won’t be happy until this country is completely gutted and bankrupt and has become a province of China or of Arabia – or of both!! So long as they have their Hummers and their 401K’s and their offshore accounts, that is!

First, the former administration did not condone torture. They sought legal advice to ensure that they were advised as to what measures could be taken. Second, some of these measures have been used in training our people in case they are taken hostage. I know this because a relative of mine had some of these methods used on him, in the name of national security. It was not done under the Bush/Cheney administration either. It was under a democrat. As to Pelosi; she is a liar and has been exposed due to her own stupidity. That is not to say I think democrats are dumb, because I think there are people in both parties that are dishonest. These people are supposed to represent all of us, not a select few. Bush/Cheney did not completely cause the United States to be dissed overseas. I lived overseas long before their administration and we have been hated since WWII. I know it seems nuts, but we have been regarded as the ugly American for decades; it is nothing new. Do I think Bush/Cheney did the best they could under the circumstances; I have no idea as I was not privy to the information they were, anymore than I will be for this President. What I believe we need to do, is stop the in-fighting, and get this country back on its feet. We need to tell all our politicians to just shut the heck up, and get back to work, or we need to fire them. And your anti-democrat rant is rational. You make me laugh.
BTW, Waterboarding simulates an execution and is considered torture. Cry all you want, but it is torture.
Come to think of it, the Chinese Water Torture is torture. All they do in secure a victim down and have a drop of cold water hit the victim in the face. Mythbusters tried it and they couldn’t take it.

I am by no means a Pelosi fan, but the evil GOP making a big deal out of her lies when their lies about WMD and Torture and the release of AG’s is so egregious that the comparison is between what Pelosi is accused of and what Cheny Bush is guilty of bogles the mind. The hypocrisy of the GOP is more than one can bare. How they have the brazen audacity to be so hypocritic is truly beyond amazing. They turn my stomach!

DO NOT LOSE sight of the truth here, (even if the media producing garbage does); Pelosi did not command/demand torture, BUSH & Cheney did. If they had never ordered torture, we wouldn’t be having this conversation!!! I find it so offensive that the media runs around burning up great amounts of energy/resources piling this crap on as thick as they can get it for as long as they can keep it going. I am ashamed of being American at times. Totally ashamed.

Fellow robbed a convenience store in Texas: pointed a big gun at the cashier and demanded all the cash. When caught, he blamed the clerk: said she “knew all along that he was robbing the store” and that she “did nothing to stop him”. Being this was Texas, the guy got off… but the clerk is still serving time for “conspiracy”.
Well, at least she would be if her name was “Pelosi”.

The distractions about who lied are GOP herrings. They mean little if an investigation ultimately leads back to those who authorized torture and lies. Neither the CIA nor Speaker Pelosi are to blame for the current uproar.
There would be no uproar without those who authorised waterboarding. The voices of those who authorized the actions seem to be missing from these discussions.

The school yard bully is usually a hunter and abuser of animals. They are a special breed and are called Sadists. Sadists were used by Hitler in his feared Death Brigades. They tortured and murdered men, women, and children. Fortunately most people are not like them. But some will go along with the program of Sadists in order to further their careers. They are guilty of unbridled greed.

A member of Congress, no less than its speaker, have accused an executive branch of the US Government and its career officials of lying under oath and lying to Congress.
These are very serious charges. At a minimum, if she honest believes they lied to Congress, then there should be an investigation into it.
The Speaker of all people, should know that these words and accusations carry consequences. She owes it to the American people to find out if they really did lie to her.

Our government was not founded on democracy, truth, or morality. Our government was founded on interpretation of the Constitution and not the words. We have tweaked, ignored, added, and blasphemed the Constitution for the past 233 years for power and glory of the elite. Here are facts. The original governors of the USA were educated elite white men who thought they knew better than the ignorant masses. In that area nothing has changed. The difference lies in the code of conduct and morality of current elite leaders. In the past the elite leaders followed a moral code and conduct of Noblesse Oblige or obligation of the noble. They thought carefully about decisions for the constituency they represented even if it only was white males. Today the elite leaders have no moral code of conduct and their only concern is personal wealth, gain, and power. The constituency is never truly considered. Here is the dilemma. How do you bring back code of conduct, ethics, morals, and obligation of the noble? It has reached an apex. This President was elected on change and this is the change the people thought they were getting. Instead it is SSDD and nothing is changed. The Republicans and Democrats still charge each other, the media uses weapons of mass distraction, and we the people are still ignored. It is my guess that 80% of the population is purple, not red and not blue. We live an ethical and moral code of conduct and honor. The change we want is for the leaders to do the same. Fire all of them, bring them all to trial, the guilty will be punished and the not guilty will be acquitted. Personally I believe every one in Washington DC is a cheat, liar, and criminal, but let the courts prove it. Bring everyone in Washington DC to trial.

This whole thing is interesting, but not truly important. The best the repubs can hope for is to embarass Pelosi, expose her as hypocrite, and make her apologise. This is truly inconsequentual stuff, as most politicians as cut from the same cloth; these things come as a shock to no one. Politician Misleads! What a non-headline.
If the dems want to pursue “truth” commisions, they are going to expose the fact that they were in the loop also. Any sincere investigation into the facts is going to show that a great many people who are denouncing “torture” were in fact aware of what was going on at the time and said nothing. The brazenly partisian nature of the commisions will only hurt the dems in the long run, considering most people dont mind that a few terrorists were waterboarded.

Pelosi would rather lie and destroy this country than confess she lied and doing the right thing by stepping down. The Democrats lie and cheat but the liberals will support them no matter what. Terrorists deserve nothing but the worst kind of torture. Waterboarding does not compare to what they do or would do to their captives.

Cary: “NOT ONE detainee was killed or suffered any lasting injury from their day at the beach.”
Issatso? I wouldn’t be so sure:
“Harsh interrogation techniques authorized by top officials of the CIA have led to questionable confessions and the death of a detainee since the techniques were first authorized in mid-March 2002, ABC News has been told by former and current intelligence officers and supervisors.”
Of waterboarding:
“‘The person believes they are being killed, and as such, it really amounts to a mock execution, which is illegal under international law,’ said John Sifton of Human Rights Watch.”

Blame gaming isn’t going to solve anything. Torture? You have no clue. It’s too bad that some photographer didn’t get a shot of the Republic of Korea Tiger division working over a Vietcong. Count them, 52,000 plus Americans died in that conflict. It probably would have been double that without harsh information gathering. War or conflict is not a video game where you can get a cheat sheet or make up the rules. You fight. You win or lose. You live or die. We will never really know exactly what the government knew about Iraq. They aren’t going to tell you. All I know is we sent our best into harms way against butchers and the highest height of evil in the world. We are still there dealing with folks that don’t view life as worth a plug nickel. Letting the media spoon feed you like a little baby is just sad. I think some of these organizations should be tried for Treason. That bodes especially true when they reveal high security operations. How many folks do you suppose they have killed with their so-called freedom of speech or the right to know. You want a real wakeup call? Go walk through a Veteran’s hospital and view what really goes on. How many of these barely grownup folks in most cases could have been saved if everybody would just let us deal with conflict in a way that benefits our own people.

clancy49, I am having trouble understanding how “We have tweaked, ignored, added, and blasphemed the Constitution for the past 233 years for power and glory of the elite” when the Constitution was written and ratified only 222 years ago, and has been the Law of the Land for only 220 years.
Beyond that, you may have some valid points.
Posted by: Jordan | May 19, 2009, 6:48 pm 6:48 pm
Several things have to be considered:
First, in 2002 CIA people we under extreme pressure from Cheney to alter their reports on the war on terror.
Second, George Tenant was the Director of the CIA at that time. Anything the administration wanted from the CIA, the administration got – true or untrue.
Third, there were other folks at that meeting. One backs Pelosi. The others have not weighed in.
Fourth, assuming Pelosi is wrong, who committed the greater sin? Pelosi who got her facts wrong? The torturers? The people in the administration who ordered the torture?
Five, the Republicans should think their ravings over more carefully. What is to stop President Obama from ordering the AG to appoint a special indedent prosecutor to get to all of the facts and who was involved. The SP would have all the legal power he/she needed and the resources to do a complete job. He/she would then, in the event of broken laws, bring indictments in. Does the GOP really want to subject Bush/Cheney/Boehmer/Rumsfield/etc to this? Be careful what you wish for; you might just get it.

TexasDem, the CIA has been trashing the U.S. since at least when I was in 5th grade (Bay of Pigs) and truthfully long before that. In the late ’60′s and early ’70′s the CIA was joining forces with the FBI and groups like CREEP and the “Plumbers” to disrupt the electoral process itself and to stifle dissent. After Watergate and the resultant Congressional hearings, the CIA mostly went to ground and confined its operations to overseas intelligence gathering. But first Reagan (Iran Contra) and then Bush Sr. opened the door for the CIA again – and Bush Jr. obeyed Cheney and threw it wide. Let us remember that Bush Sr. was tied to the CIA a LONG time before he headed the agency briefly under Ford (1976-7).
The CIA is known throughout the world AND at home for being a too-autonomous and too-secretive agency committed to its own agenda and to the benefit of large corporations operating in many parts of the world. Much of the Iranian, Iraqi, Syrian and other Arab antipathy toward the U.S. is directly resultant to “covert” CIA actions conducted against the people and the expressed will of the people of these lands – including deposing a popular elected Iranian Prime Minister in 1953 for the benefit of American oil companies.
But the CIS’s record on telling the truth before Congress is just about nil.
The truth is, there is a strong smell of rot coming from CIA HQ: a smell of old trash and of dead bodies. The CIA is in desperate need of a housecleaning so that it can serve as a legitimate instrument in service to the legitimate interests of the People of the United States.
What the CIA ever told Pelosi is really irrelevant – because quite frankly she would have been incompetent had she so much as BELIEVED them. Moreover, it is on record that what the CIA did tell Pelosi, they communicated in a CLASSIFIED or SECRET briefing. Whatever Pelosi heard in that briefing, she could not legally use outside of closed-door Congressional committees ruled by Republicans. Unlike Rove, Libby, Cheney and some others, Pelosi seems to have chosen to treat classified information as CLASSIFIED. She may even yet be doing so.
So in the end, it is not Pelosi who needs to join the ranks of the unemployed – but rather those in the CIA and in the Bush Justice Department who chose to “interpret” the law as stating precisely the opposite of what it in fact does say: that waterboarding is torture and that torture is ALWAYS unlawful. The Bush Administration’s interpretation on this issue could not be more damning if they had “interpreted” that strangling someone is not “murder” because there is no blood! It was (il)legal HOGWASH!

Your “statistic” probably rings true. So how do you defend Kilpatrick, Jefferson, Murtha, Blago, Burris, Jackson II, Clinton, Dodd, Franks, Edwards, Rangel, and their ilk? Let’s see that’s eleven so far since last year, and that’s only the tip of the liberal iceberg. So by your theory, seems to me the democratic ratio of “high level” corruption is much higher than the GOP. We’re talking ONE YEAR versus your 8 year claim? So prepare your liberal selves for a BIG turnover in 2012. By the sounds of the backlash coming from the left on just about all of Obama’s policies, a lot of citizens in this country that put their faith in the messiah’s BS mantra of “hope and change” are fed up with the liberal democratic party who puts their own interests above the needs of this country.

The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, likely the world’s largest media organization, devotes substantial resources to make U.S. military and other federal employees feel proud to be an American and feel good about the missions they are ordered to undertake and to minimize doubts among them and the U.S. public (in addition to manipulating foreign public opinion).
Accordingly, the CIA employs, trains, and recruits thousands of talented, accomplished, meticulous, professional, prolific, anonymous liars and undercover mouthpieces.
Many work for prominent press and media organizations (U.S. and foreign), many work in other government agencies, and many work in-house at the CIA or DoD, supplying broadcast scripts and print copy, to their out-housed undercover colleagues and operatives, for placement in otherwise legitimate media, THE C.I.A LIE, IT’S WHAT THEY DO…………..
