Pelosi Wants to Move on From Torture ‘Distraction’
ABC News’ Z. Byron Wolf reports: The combative Nancy Pelosi was gone this week, replaced with someone on-message who wants to move forward from talking about Bush-era torture techniques. The woman who last week accused the CIA of lying to her and misleading Congress — a crime — this week wants to move on. Pelosi came to her weekly press conference with reinforcements – House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, DCCC chairman Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., and Rep. Xavier Becerra, D-Calif., all of whom spoke at length on boilerplate Democratic priorities before reporters even got a question to Pelosi off. At a 30 minute press conference, the first question did not come until minute 25. When reporters tried to ask Pelosi about all that has happened since her accusation of the CIA last week – the calls by Republicans for her to resign, and the strong defense of the intelligence community by CIA Director Leon Panetta – Hoyer at first tried to step forward and answer for her. But reporters asked for Pelosi to respond. She said: "I have made the statement I’m going to make about this. I don’t have anything more to say about it… what we are doing is staying on our course and not being distracted from it and this is a distraction… moving forward in a bipartisan way for jobs, health care, energy for our country." "On the subject you asked, I’ve made by statement," Pelosi again said. "I don’t have anything more to say." The House speaker ignored other attempts to ask her questions about the CIA and her allegations last week. Granted, there has been a lot of activity in Congress this week. Ahead of a week-long recess, sweeping bills to reform the credit card industry, the defense acquisitions process, provide nearly $91 billion to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, revamp federal mortgage assistance programs and help the DOJ go after mortgage fraud were all considered by the House. But amid all that activity, Pelosi has stayed away from questioning reporters and the torture debate has consumed Washington, largely fueled by Pelosi’s contention last week that the CIA, under President Bush, did not inform her of the torture techniques they were employing when she was the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee after 9/11.

How pathetic is it that outside contractors hired by the CIA were in direct violation of TITLE 18 > PART I > CHAPTER 113C of the US Code and that laywers for the OLC wrote memos wishing the violations away after the fact, yet the only thing the DC press cares about is whather Nancy Pelosi was adequately informed of the fact?
The debate that “consumes” Washington!
Absolutely pathetic.

The ball is in the CIA,s court.
They gave their side of the story ,i.e. the information about the EIT briefings ,namely who was told what etc.
So ,everyone just believes a bunch of career liars (the CIA) with no proof?
THEY should be the ones to have to prove they told her about waterboarding.
Why should she be forced to defend herself against the CIA’s undocumented claims?
???
This is no different than if me or you accused anyone of anything without proof ,it would go nowhere in court ,because there is no proof the CIA ever did brief her about waterboarding ,just that they SAY they did.
Which is of course totally ridiculous and absurd, just like the morons (almost 100% Republicans ,or “moderates” who are pseudo-Republicans as well) who stay fixated to such menial drivel.

Wow, I really guess their credibility has soared for some reason recently. Personally , I don’t (and have never) believed a public utterance/word/statement that comes from the CIA , and I would recommend you do likewise.

The reporter who put the words in Pelosi’s mouth last week during the press conference, for some strange reason, was never identified after all of the controversy ensued. It’s just an observation of another elephant in the living room, as the figure of speech goes. Anyway, if you watched the video, Pelosi wasn’t actually “combative,” but then that’s a pejorative that’s been used or implied far more than once around here. When the reporter baited her with the question of the CIA lying to her, Pelosi’s response was , “Yes, I was mislead…” She then proceeded to use the softened, mislead. But the yes response was enough for the McCarthy emulating GOP and elements of the media to jump on their bandwagon with. It’s been a shameless sham, perpetuated by some members of the media and the GOP, to try and bring down a Democratic Speaker of the House, who also just happened to be advocating a torture commission. Joseph McCarthy would be proud. Good Day.

kat, what does mislead mean?

What does lie mean?

Seems like the same thing to me.
So there are two conclusions. The CIA lied or Pelosi is stupid.

“They are people, just like you, trying to do a job. Same as our military.”
And like people trying to do a job everywhere they sometimes screw up. And sometimes they play CYA games.
The fact remains is that Pelosi’s role in the whole business is irrelevant. That reporters are acting like a pack of hounds that have been thrown off their scent is a depressing footnote to a sordid tale that actually centers on the OLC.

Her importance is that it highlights that the EIM were not snuck through by a devious administration like you want to believe. It shows that it had bi-partisan review, both dems and repubs, which shoots a hole in the propaganda put out by the left that Bush and Cheney were torturing people and should be tried for war crimes. If thats the case, then a couple dozen members of congress (from both sides of the isle) would also be included in that, and Pelosi is one of them.

The CIA is composed of many people doing many things , some completely unrelated to spying/lying but the agency itself IS A PROFESSIONAL LIE/SCHEME/BACK-STAB FACTORY ,IT’S WHAT THEY DO.
Say whatever you like about Pelosi, but I personally haven’t seen even one tiny speck of evidence from the CIA to support their side of the story , so using history as well as the CIA’s own implicit agenda as my guide , I would have to conclude that they are probably lying (for whatever reason that might be) .

Actually of course Pelosi’s statement today means that she is unwilling to back up her claims. She wants to just do her “job, the Congress part (thing)”. That is she wants to keep her chair before her fellow Dems consider her a liability and dump her. So it is all about her. If it were not all about her she would take whatever consequences for the sake of the country. Obama, Panetta, Reid agree.

A political party. Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, Clinton all have lied and members of their adminstration have lied. There is only one common thread, all involved are politicians. So while you like to put on blinders and look at a specific example in 1986, I am trying to open your perspective that the CIA as an organization has been the fall guy for lies by politicians for decades, accross parties. So spare me the sanctimonious bs. I dig a little further in history than just partisan highlights.

There’s an interesting article in Bloomberg today about Pelosis’s systematic and well planned attack, which appears to be the most successful one since 1997. Anyway, it’s titled “Beautiful Target’,” penned from Edie Meche, a Republican strategist, who had her tagged as a good target because of Obama’s high popularity in the polls. Basically, the Republicans are walking a real thin line on this one, the last thing they would want is an actual investigation because it would backfire badly. As it already is, CNN had an interview where Boehner was challenged on the Republican Pete Hoekstra stating the CIA had lied about the downing of plane that killed a missionary and her daughter over Peru several years back. I’m afraid those of us hoping for an investigation into Pelosi’s assertions are going to be dispointed, because the GOP strategists , with the assistance of some willing media outlets like ABC, are going to keep up the attacks on Pelosi to undermine her, while not actually pressing proactively for the badly needed investigation.

The US’s debt rating is being cut, which means we’ll have to pay higher interest rates, which means higher deficits.
This year’s deficit will be over $2 trillion and next year’s won’t be much lower.
The Fed Chairman said inflation is coming (which I told you here long ago would happen). You have no idea how badly Obama is screwing this economy.

The issue is that Pelosi then did not follow through on her convictions, both of “misleading” and the waterboarding whenever she was informed which was certainly before the letter Jane Harmon wrote.
Not important to her then, not important to her now. What is foremost to her is the game of politics and not getting dropped by fellow Dems as a liability. Politics is not only her “job, the Congress part” but its all about her. If it was about the country, she would pursue her claims no matter the consequences.

It is disputed what she leared and when. A number of credible individuals have challenged the veracity and accuracy of the CIA, from Pete Hoekstra, a Republican, to Sen. Graham who was briefed around the time Pelosi was. Even Panetta has stated to the effect that some CIA records are made after the fact and memory dependent. But by far, the biggest hypocrisy is that those who like to accuse Pelosi of lying also advocate torture. That’s a distorted value system, to say the least.

Some quarters? Both Pelosi (Democrat) and Hoekstra (Repulbican) have publicly and bluntly accused the CIA of lying and misleading Congress within the last 12 months.
“We cannot have a community that operates outside the law and covers up what it does and lies to Congress.” – Rep Hoekstra
It should be noted that Hoekstra eventually demanded and got a Congressional investigation into the case he was concerned about that found there was indeed an active coverup by the CIA of the facts.

It is somewhat amusing that the CIA claimed Sen Graham was briefed four times. He pointed out that he had very detailed personal records, and no he wasn’t, and the CIA had to admit that oops – it was only once. That’s not a he said/she said argument, that was Senator Graham saying the CIA was flatly wrong about briefing him 4 times and them agreeing they were wrong…

Now that it is getting clear even to the corporate press, that Pelosi was right and Goss is seriously parsing his doublespeak, perhaps a media mea culpa is in order.
This story is clear evidence that the corporate press cannot be trusted to tell the truth. Oh, eventually they’ll fess up and note that the republicans were playing semantics, but that’ll be long after it really matters.
How many times does this have to happen? If it happened once or twice, fine, they made a mistake and didn’t do their homework. When it happens over and over again, when it becomes a pattern of practice, it is clear that the media has an agenda.

You miss my point. There is a difference between lies and bad intelligence. In those cases where it can be proved the CIA passed along information it knew was incorrect (for political or other self-serving purposes) the CIA should be investigated and brought to justice accordingly.
But to assume that every time information that the CIA provides that later proves to be incorrect must be a “CIA lie” is shallow thinking.

We’ve all read Profiles in Courage, maybe we’ve all read a Man for All Seasons. It matters not that we agree with the policy that someone is sacrificing a career for, but that courage for convictions is shown.
I saw little of that in the posturing before the election, and it is even more “distracting” now. But yeah, let’s go back to spending another few trillion, okaying judges that spit on American values, and await all these Obama commissions to tell us how to fight the war on jihadist terrorists.

The CIA was FOUND TO HAVE LIED. They made an error (or were sloppy), and then were clearly found to have LIED to cover it up. Not an error, an active attempt to mislead Congress to deny culpability. I’m not sure how difficult a point that is to grasp – the CIA is as fallible as any part of government and is NOT above reproach.

Pelosi has already requested copies of the briefings in dispute. For that matter, Newt Gingrich or Boehner could stop roaring like paper lions and initiate an investigation themselves. I think we both agree that the Pelosi and the issues should be addressed to the point of investigation. “House Democrats on Thursday defeated a Republican push to investigate House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s assertion that the CIA misled her in 2002 about whether waterboarding had been used against terrorism suspects”
Includes language such as “Whereas Speaker Pelosi’s public statements allege a sustained pattern of deception by government intelligence officers charged by law with informing Congress about the agency’s activities”
“Whereas national and international media reports on this controversy have damaged the reputation of the House by raising questions about whether the effectiveness of congressional oversight may have been undermined through false or misleading statements by intelligence officials; and
Whereas in order to safeguard the reputation of the House it is imperative to reconcile as soon as possible the aforementioned contradictory statements by Speaker Pelosi and CIA Director Panetta”
Democrats on instructions of Obama and Pelosi voted it down.
Just so that you know.
“I look find the concrete, or the actions and words, more compelling than trying to second guess motives.”
I guess you’re right
1)The action was to block investigation.
2)The investigation was to “reconcile…contradictory statements by Speaker Pelosi and CIA Director Panetta”
3) the blocking was done by the party in control of Congress and the CIA.
No need to analyze motives, it’s prima facie.

Sorry, Flash, but it is NOT clear to everyone, including the press, that Nancy Pelosi was right. In fact, it seems clear to many if not most of us that she was lying through her teeth and tried to smear the CIA to cover her lie. This “press conference” was as farcical as her last attempt to put the matter behind her, last week’s press conference with the shuffling of papers and reading of prepared statements.
She does seem to have learned a thing or two from the Chosen One, however. First, attempt to divert people from the subject they want to talk about to the subject you want to talk about. Second, insist you want to move forward (when you get in a mess by looking backward and trying continually to trash the previous administration) and label everything that makes you look bad a “distraction.”

Keep in mind that the only thing she’s disputing is whether she learned about waterboarding in September, 2002 or five months later in May, 2003. There is no dispute at all that whichever date she learned about it, she did and said nothing whatsoever to even question it, let alone stop it. By the same token, when given a secret briefing in 2004 on a covert operation she didn’t like, she brought it to a screeching halt.
She was in favor of waterboarding, as were the other Democrats, until they sensed that there was a political opportunity in being opposed to it.
No wonder she wants to move on. If there was a criminal conspiracy (actually, there wasn’t), she was part and parcel of it.
