Teleprompter Falls and Biden Jokes: “What am I going to tell the president when I tell him his teleprompter is broken?”
ABC News’ Karen Travers reports: As Vice President Biden delivered a commencement address to about 1,000 graduates of the Air Force Academy, a gust of wind knocked over his teleprompter. Biden took that opportunity to crack a joke at the expense of his boss, President Obama, who famously uses a teleprompter for all of his speeches. "What am I going to tell the president when I tell him his teleprompter is broken? What will he do then?" Biden joked at the ceremony in Colorado Springs, Col. Perhaps Biden thought it was a safe topic to joke about, given that Obama poked fun at himself for the habit at this year’s White House Correspondents Association dinner in Washington. "You know, I had an entire speech prepared for this wonderful occasion, but now that I’m here I think I’m going to try something a little different. Tonight I want to speak from the heart. I’m going to speak off the cuff," Obama said as a teleprompters rose on either side of his podium. Obama’s fondness for the teleprompter has even sparked a parody web site, "Barack Obama’s Teleprompter’s Blog", that proclaims "Because There Is No POTUS Without TOTUS." The site was quick to deny any responsibility for the breakdown during Biden’s speech. "First, it wasn’t me. Second, we don’t bother giving Joe a real Teleprompter. It’s just two screens that plays "Tom and Jerry" cartoons on a loop." Biden has long been known for his loquaciousness and off the cuff humor, but sometimes his jokes have fallen flat. A joke about Chief Justice John Roberts in the early days of the administration earned Biden a dismissive shake of the head from Obama. Roberts misspoke when administering the oath of office to President Obama on Inauguration Day, misplacing the word "faithfully" and causing some minor awkwardness on stage. The following day, Biden was tasked with administering the oath of office to senior White House staff members. He had just finished the oaths for several individuals who had been confirmed to Cabinet-level positions and did not seem to realize he had to do the oath a second time. "My memory is not as good as Justice Roberts," Biden explained, prompting some laughter and groans from the audience. In his first press conference as president, Obama was asked to explain a comment that Biden made in a speech. Biden was describing a conversation he and the president had, about an unknown subject, and said that if the Obama Administration does everything right, "there’s still a 30 percent chance we’re going to get it wrong." "You know, I don’t remember exactly what Joe was referring to. Not surprisingly," Obama said, prompting laughter from the assembled reporters. — Karen Travers

Too bad Biden was chosen to make Obama look good.

Maybe repeating the “fixing Bushes mistakes” and “the last 8 years” helps you ignore reality; all the power to you. I don’t really care at this point what liberals simpletons think.
Ignore all the deceptions, hypocrisy, reversals, excuses to cover unnecessary overspending, etc. “It’s all Bush’s fault.”
If you are educated and have self respect you lose drastically in an Obama administration. Point blank. People who are governed by logic not ideals know exactly what I’m talking about.

Gotta love that Joe. But I wonder if the president will appreciate the joke.
And I adore the TOTUS website– not sure who is behind it, but they have the WH down well.
And, at the risk of getting myself deleted, I will point out that “try the truth” wins the prize for the first comment to bash Bush for no apparent reason. congrats, Try.

The “forgot you lost” is the funniest thing. You don’t even realize we all lost.
As long as america can survive the disasterous fiscal policies and begin reversing american 3rd world economics in 2012 a democratic win is actually a good thing. It shows americans liberals are 100% about political posturing and are every bit as corrupt as everything they’ve accused republicans of. All these “principles” liberals seemed almost genuine about have proved to be a farce once in power. For example “bipartisanship” LOL.
The election and the post election childish attitude like a spoiled kid who had his toys taken away has shown most moderates to pay attention to liberal “values” about as much as the Charlie Brown teacher talking.
Be happy with your “win” in the short term. Hate to say it but Obama won’t do squat for your more than likely pathetic situation. He’ll run you around the greyhound track following a rabbit and you’ll end up in the same place you started.

Biden could probably go on for days about that clown Obama. The way Obama uses that teleprompter is just plain weird. I can’t watch any of his speeches without thinking about him reading from the teleprompter while his head goes back and forth. Just plain weird!

This is so funny, because there’s such truth at the heart of it. Zero’s dependence on his teleprompter was wholly evident yesterday on NBC’s coverage of Sotomayor the Racist’s appt. to the SCOTUS. For some reason, NBC’s camera angle was such that The Teleprompter’s screen was completely in front of her face? To see her, you had to look thru the plexiglass; but more importantly, it was bizarrely evident of Zero’s total dependence on The Teleprompter. Anyone watching NBC could just see him looking directly at the thing, and how he would have been clueless of what to say without it!
I wish anyone knew whether Zero had his trusty TOTUS when he told C-Span that (direct quote) “We are out of money”? Well, duh, with the neo-communists in this mob. Between Zero’s mob and NanCIA Pelousy’s Kongress they make drunken sailors look like Scrooge. So either Zero had a brief, unscripted moment of truthfulness (his first?), because I can’t believe TOTUS would allow him to be truthful, otherwise.
Seriously, with this America-hating mob occupying our government, one never knows whether to laugh or to cry. Another trip to the woodshed for Biden!
OBAMA = FAILURE

Biden is proof that if your a lib or a minority you can say anything stupid or racist and not suffer any repercussions. All presidents in recent years used the teleprompter. None has been as skilled at it as Obama. The man writes his own books, so he is obviously intellegent. I think the big deal made about it is to imply that he’s stupid, which carries racial overtones.
What other Harvard Law grads who taught constitutional law, and wrote two best-selling books, would be called a zero or stupid if he weren’t black?
Bush would have used it more, if he could actually read.

I guess you didn’t catch any debates or interviews or press conferences. Haters, keep hating. He’s your president too and things will get better for you too, whether you like it or not.
Posted by: missy | May 27, 2009, 9:34 pm 9:34 pm
Missy, yes, all recent presidents have used teleprompters on occasion, but none have relied on it as frequently as he does. He does not even give short opening remarks without the crutch of a prompter, as opposed to written notes on a podium or memorizing a few lines. Ryan mentioned his prime-time press conference; remember that he used a prompter at the back of the room to read his opening remarks.
Teasing the president for relying on the teleprompter, or riding him about it, has nothing to do with racism. That charge is ridiculous. And as a professor who knows plenty of law school professors, I am not automatically impressed with his intellect because he taught constitutional law as an adjunct. You claim he wrote two books without help, but are we sure? I do not have strong feelings on the matter, but I do know that we have few other written materials from him to compare his books to, so we don’t know if his prose was punched up by a ghost writer. And there’s nothing wrong with using a ghost writer, in my opinion. Most politicians and other people whose fame derives from something other than their writing skill use them. John McCain acknowledged his as co-author of his many books, so I guess that doesn’t really count as a “ghost writer.” Both Clintons had co-writers. Maybe Obama did, maybe he didn’t. It would not diminish his intelligence to do so.
I suggest you tone down the defensive “that’s racist” charges. One can criticize the president without being a racist. And I notice you are quick to bash Bush– so it’s not that you respect the office and all those who hold it. Bush is also an intelligent man whose verbal boo-boos often derived from not using a teleprompter (and sometimes from the prompter, to be sure). Folks like you were quick to ridicule him for that. But when Obama makes similar mistakes because he relies on the words on the prompter– such as when he was introducing Sotomayor and said the Constitution was written “20 centuries ago”– it is a terrible offense if anyone points it out. The double standard is silly.
I think Joe Biden made a funny statement, and as my son often says, “it’s funny coz it’s true.”

Love you, Joe Biden! This was a cute little jab by Joe, and he was pretty quick on the uptake. Funny. You know that POTUS and VPOTUS laugh at the rest of us and our petty obsessions; teleprompter being one of them. Please, most on this thread … faithfully spurred on by the authors to keep some traffic I guess … write the same, tired, comments we see all the time, taking the same tired potshots at Biden and Obama. We can almost finish your sad sentences. Sorry, Obama and Biden are just fine, and sounds like Joe and the president know how to laugh at themselves and at the rest of us ;-) I tend to believe Biden and Obama have bigger things on their minds, and although they laugh behind closed doors, they are busy taking care of bigger issues. I say good one Joe! I giggle because no one worth their beans really gives a flying monkey!

What tickled me about Joe’s joke is that gossipy pseudo news articles (hint hint) try their best to paint Obama and Joe as being different. Well, so what? They’ve worked together for years and are well-acquainted with each other’s personality. No one is more loyal to Obama than Biden, except for Michelle, and I like seeing the most loyal close to our president. That said, I was afraid with all the nonsense from faux news (hint hint), these two gentlemen would stop joshing each other; they obviously haven’t, and I have that much more respect for Biden and Obama for not folding. They are a great team and probably the closest President/VP in our history. Vive le difference! No need to drum up the joke about Roberts again, we know what you’re going for here. Honestly, I can think of no one who deserved the jab more than Roberts. But why bring it up again, right? Luv ya a bunch, Joe! And Mr. President!

Skilled at it? Jeez, now we’re praising the guy for his reliance on the teleprompter? The White House should employ you as part of their communications team. Oh, yeah, you do realize that the person who made fun of Obama’s use of teleprompters was his own VP, right?
As for your comment about it carrying racial overtones, how about if we just agree that, in retrospect, you realize how truly ridiculous you were to write that.
“What other Harvard Law grads who taught constitutional law, and wrote two best-selling books, would be called a zero or stupid if he weren’t black?

There are many individuals from both parties with impressive professional and academic backgrounds that are called stupid by the other side of the aisle, including Supreme Court justices, so stop it with your attempt to make this an issue about race, which you did twice in your post. I know it makes your defense of Obama easier if you use that pathetic argument, but how about just a little intellectual honesty?
“Bush would have used it more, if he could actually read.
Posted by: missy | May 27, 2009 9:32:33 PM”
Amazing. You praise Obama for his intellect based in part on his educational background, yet ignore Bush’s Ivy League education by actually saying that he can’t read. Hyperbole much? Even funnier is how you imply Bush is stupid, yet in your first paragraph you misspelled “intelligent.” Way to go.
BTW, you do realize that Obama’s academic achievements and perceived intellect don’t automatically apply to you personally because you support him, right? Unbelievable how some people live vicariously through the accomplishments of others.

Joe’s why I send money to Obama/Biden. No one cares that President Obama uses a teleprompter, but the fact that so many are obsessed with it helped Joe with a funny joke. Obama’s doing a great job and I support him 100%. He won’t get anyone more loyal than Joe Biden. I think we’re fortunate to have both individuals in Washington, DC.

All they have is “teleprompter” and “birth certificate” and “trips on taxpayers’ money” because that’s all they can talk about – well, i’m a taxpayer and I didn’t like where some of the money (actually, a lot of the money) went when W was in office. Imo, BO’s doing a great job and I’m relieved he’s in office with a great vp, sec of st, and the rest of a truly competent cabinet. I agree. I love that under Obama my tax money is going to the financiers and bankers on Wall Street. I’m glad that the Ivy Leaguers like Geithner took care of their own. I am thrilled that (spread the wealth) Obama, (so I lied, sue me) Pelosi and (the war is lost) Reid are giving our tax money to union bosses so that they can take the companies away from private investors. I love that my taxes are going to pay for other people’s mortgages and second mortgages. I love that my tax money disappearing into the black hole of TARP and stimulus bills isn’t resulting in any gain in American jobs.
I love that my tax money is not only disappearing out of my wallet but out of the wallets of my children and grandchildren. They wouldn’t know what to do with it and anyway. It’s also a very good thing that my tax money isn’t being spent on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan anymore. That was such a waste.
Yeah, I’m pretty pleased with where my tax money is going.

NaryE, interesting how you pick and choose. You say the president’s critics here focus on stuff like his birth certificate and cosmetics like the teleprompter and the expense of his travels. Wrong! I am one of those critics, and I have never once mentioned his birth certificate— folks who fixate on that sort of tin-foil-hat stuff are not serious critics of the president. I criticize the president’s economic decisions, some of his foreign policy decisions, some of his management and leadership style– substantive issues. MayBee and Sigmonde and Fascist Hyena similarly concentrate on substantive issues but will chime in on a fun thread like this one as well.
You may not agree with us, but to dismiss us as cranks with crackpot ideas is simply unfair and untrue. But then, your favorite president has set the example of choosing those on the fringe as his strawmen rather than confronting his serious critics, so why should you do any different?

After the election I couldn’t believe the blinders but now I see them coming off more and more. The “we won” now = “we all lost” and the Bush bashers are starting to remember that Obama ran on a Santa Claus platform but he’s more like Robin Hood with his redistribution. I think Biden could give a rats butt about his boss and is pleading insanity to wake everyone up. He’s got benefits for life…what difference is it to him if this is last gig. He makes us all laugh but he who laughs last, laughs best. No worries Joe…your secret is safe. Keep exposing that empty suit, America hating boss of yours.
